QFT.

Melee combat seems way to powerful, I think balance will be an issue.

Its hard to say though when you haven't seen all the guns.

However, I think there's a thread on this already?

I was wary about this game when I saw Chaos Marines leaping about like gymnasts before exploding into pink dust after they were killed, then by a zoom-able ‘Sniper’ Lascannon and a ‘Shotgun’ Melatgun. Then I played the demo and noticed that at no point did I ‘squee’ like a good little fanboy. It was mediocre – not bad, but not especially inspiring or original. The Orks don’t sound like Orks, combat is repetitive, all the environments are the same damned colour, Mark Strong sounds asleep while reading his lines and combat is repetitive.

I know I said that last one twice, but that’s the point.

I’ll borrow it from a friend. I’m very glad they put out a demo for this so I didn’t waste time on a pre-order. Now I can pre-order Arkham City instead.

I am not likely to pick it up. Its not that it doesn't look that good or anything like that, I just have no need for another shooter nor do I have the funds to pick it up if I was interested in the title.

I'll be getting it, I usually play stuff like SC2 that requires you to be mentally on for the entire game, and the relatively simple xenos-slaughtering with bolter and chainsword is appealing for sitting back and not having to think too hard.

It looks good enough and is from a respected developer so I want to support the idea of 40k on consoles (especially in a third-person-shooter flavor). Frankly, the in-game animations on that game look better than the entirety of the Ultramarine movie.

I see you're 12 years old.

Also, "trial and error" is a little thing called "the past 30 years of video gaming." They should learn from their predecessors. If the game sucks, they don't get a pass. I don't think the game will suck, but I don't expect it to be Earth-shatteringly brilliant either.

And your ridiculous brand loyalty to GW is adorable.

I preordered it first day and am really excited. i will say that its nothing magnificent, but its a game which is satisfying as all hell to play. melee felt like fable, shooting reminded me of gears of war, the graphics were good, the voice acting wasn't bad and most importantly it reminded me of why i love 40k again.
That being said i didn't get the collectors edition, the cards and purity seal aren't cutting it for the extra cash...

I am most certainly going to get it.

But I will not buy the collector's edition, nor will I pay new game prices for it. I'm going to grouse and gripe and complain for days when I pay thirty bucks for it. Anything more than that is a crime. I am shocked that anyone has the audacity to charge that much for a video game.

I recognize that the industry has come a long long way from the tarnished days of my yoof, when a new video game ran me twenty dollars. I also recognize that there is no going back to that. I recognize that the industry is going to charge what people will pay, and as the OP demonstrates, people are willing to pay for this. A lot of money, apparently.

Finally, I recognize that there is only room in my heart (and wallet) for one video game franchise that I will pay new game prices for. And Assassin's Creed already has that spot.

I concur. They want to do trial and error, release free betas. For my $60 I expect a game as polished and well developed as any modern FPS.

From the demo, I'm pretty sure this will be the case.

Calm down, ork boy, with all that screaming the zerglings will find you. By the way, Blizzard demonstrates how you make a compelling game that lasts, you could do a lot worse than learn from their game design. If Space Marine had the polish that SC2 does, I'd have preordered collector's in a heartbeat.

Let them come after me for their $60. I'm about $3600 in debt which is all in collections, I own a beat up 98 VW and that's it. I have nothing to lose. And no one goes to prison for IP infringement.

Post by: RatBot

Considering how many people torrent stuff and don't get caught it'd probably not happen, but I just thought I'd point out that they won't come after you for $60. They'll come after you for $100,000 and they will take everything you own to get it. And if what you own isn't enough, they'll take a portion of whatever money you make until it is. I mean, does anyone remember when those college kids got busted for music piracy? The were charged a fine of 100 grand per song. Of course, the cases were settled for significantly less than that, but don't think it's just 60 bucks they'll come at you for.

Theoretically, there is criminal copyright infringement which is a $200,000 fine and up to five years in prison but I don't really know what you'd have to do to get that. I assume you'd have to not just torrent something, but sell copies of it.

Voted "not getting it".

Tried Dawn of War. All three orignal parts. Didn't grab me.

Doesn't matter how awesome THQ try to make it. It just doesn't work for me. I like my vidjagaming separate to my ttg.

Not going to get it until it drops in price a fair bit. Played the demo, was fun for the first couple waves or so of Orks. I see there's no option for "I might get it, but not at release as while it seems interesting it doesn't live up to the initial RRP to me" instead just two options for yes.

I mean that's one the things I weight up about the game:

How many times am I really going to play it? Is full price worth it for a 8-hour campaign that I'll play once? I don't play multiplayer, so there's no attraction there.

Post by: Steve.C

No. I downloaded the demo and decided I didn't like it in about five minutes. I hate to write a mini review on a forum, but here's what I thought for anyone interested.

To be honest I didn't find many issues with the game. Character movement felt wrong for one thing; moving Captain Titus felt light and fluffy, like a blamange. And I wasn't struck with the hack and slash gameplay, though that's just a matter of personal preference. It looked very nice and the environments were cool, so it wasn't the visuals that irked me.

No, what made it a dead deal for me was the voice acting. As soon as one of the characters opened their mouth and began making noises I thought "this is sh*t". Voice acting can make or kill a game for me. In a cinematic experience like Space Marine, acting is important. Good acting can make even the most one-dimensional characters interesting. But bad voice acting can completely remove any sense of excitement or tension simply because I don't care about the characters.

A good example is Gears of War. Marcus Fenix and his buddies aren't exactly the deepest of characters. But they're all interesting and I care about what happens to them because they're written and acted well. Of course Gears isn't perfect, but there's a real sense of passion in the Gears of War series which is brought out in the story and characters, as well as the style and the visuals. And I'm not being biased here; the same goes for the Call of Duty series (Modern Warfare onward). I don't particularly like any of the Call of Duty's, but they are filled with interesting people and I really wanted to find out what happened to them in the end, even though I had no intention of playing the games again. Space Marine just came off as a bunch of boring people saying uninteresting things to each other while stuff happened. This lack of interest can destroy a gaming experience just as well as shoddy graphics or gameplay.

Of course, I'm basing these opinions on a few minutes of demo gameplay. As far as I know, Space Marine could be far better than what I saw in the demo. But a demonstration is what it is; a representation of the game as a whole, compacted into a few minutes. And based on those few minutes, I won't be buying it. Not until the price has fallen anyway, and even then only if it has a co-operative survival mode I can play without listening to anybody speak.

I'm in.

tbh i did feel the gameplay became a little repetitive, and the fact you can't JUMP was a negative ("oh look a small step... nope! have to go around!").

But i feel that most games have repetitiveness after a while. Must be me... am getting old

Story, character design, models, and backround i feel THQ nailed superbly. I especially loved the 'weight' of the character as he moved/stomped along as well as the "This. Is. SPAAARRRTAAAA!" finishing moves. Voice acting suits, and definately better animation than the Ultramarine movie.

Only thing i wished they implemented was vehicles in multiplayer. To be smokin' around the battlefield with rhinos/preds/speeders etc would have made it exceptional... Even take it a step further with ranking involving scouts...

who wouldn't want "battlefield 3 space marine"??

Gonna buy it, but only for co op and online features....It looks great and all but there is something nagging at me. Can't put my finger on it yet, but I'll figure it out soon enough!

On another note, those disheartened by the demo can rest assured, I'm sure there will be some proper epic set pieces in the main game.....

Have you seen the list of games coming out this year?

I don't have time for anything less than major GOTY contender, I'm talking games that would 100% win GOTY in any other year but this year the competition is all like that.

For example; Arkham City would take it easy in any other year, as would Skyrim, as would assassins creed: revelations, as would Deus Ex, as would Battlefield 3, etc. etc.

So yes, I'll get it eventually but it's gonna be a hell of a long time before I do.

partly true but this ignores that often developers will put graphics ahead of gameplay to sell the next flash thing (huh. that sounds familiar.) while ignoring the key to good gaming: the good game. people still play tetris for chrissake. i still play super mario kart and secret of mana.

that's not to say there isn't good, highly playable games out now, only it's not as simple as saying that people have learned how to make better games because of the history of gaming. they've simply used technology to make games look better, while the games themselves may be of mediocre quality.

to the OP, I'm still on the fence about it. i should probably try the demo, but at the moment i'll probably wait till it gets cheaper.

Arkham City, Dead Island and BF3 need my attention more then this one does.

The Space Marine game was meh. I liked the Ultramarines movie better then I did playing this one.

If they could have just kept that sort of momentum going, made three more movies for the price of this game, it might have been worth it.

I find it ironic when people say they aren't going to get the game because it's repetitive. We roll dice and move models all the time, all the same ways. We play games were we use the same skills over and over again. We also play all these clone shooters these days.

At least Space Marine doesn't have chest high walls and regenerating health.

So you, as someone who hasn't played either game told your friend who has that his opinion is wrong? Is this a new trend or something? People used to actually play games before commenting on them.

You're going to be so disappointed the first time you take damage in the game.

Preordered on Steam.

Great fun, absolutely love it. It's certainly nowhere near Game of the Year material (that will be Dark Souls), but it's damn good fun.

I played the demo and it was ok - but not that great. The combat is extremely simple and designed to look flashy over having and real control.

I'd call it strictly a weekend rental.

I will.

Looks fun, multiplayer looks somewhat solid.

It doesn't have regenerating health. At all. I've played the demo, and the only times you gain health are by finishing off enemies or going into fury mode. You have an armor like shield around you that regenerates outside of getting hit. 3+ armor save.

It's the Halo regenerating health system. Immediate health regenerates (shield) with a pool of health that, when reaching zero, kills you. No matter how they try to justify it or word it to make it not sound like regenerating health, it's one of the regenerating health systems that's floating around.

Not that I'm saying its bad, but saying it's not a regenerating health system is wrong.

3,600 in the hole isn't much. I have medical bills and I don't even want to go over that crap. Collections calling every day. It's pretty cute how hard they try. Anyways yeah, Torrent if all else fails.

In all fairness, Space Marines actually do regenerate all but the most grievous of wounds rather quickly, so a regenerating health system makes sense.

Nah, he's right.

I played Gears of War once for about 5 minutes back in 2006, and I was unable to figure out the controls. Even that was better than Space Marine.

Not that quickly. And they don't really regenerate damage like you're saying. If they did they wouldn't need bionics.

Fixed for accuracy. Halo had health packs and regenerating shields. Many games beforehand had regenerating shields as well.

giggling
laughing madly
screaming 'HURR'

I intend to play Space Marine with much glee.

You just saved me from typing a wholle lot of stuff.

Basicly I agree with everything you said, I think I'll give it a pass.

You could call it magic pixie fairy dust for all that matters, it doesn't change the fact that it is a regenerating health system... But I find your defence of it rather endearing.

I fail to see the point you're trying to make.

Are you opposed to any system with regenerating life-stats due to not being hardcore enough?

Or are you just trying to 'prove' that SM has regenerating life-stats?

If the latter, what exactly do you see as the problem with regenning life stats? The SM game has a shield-like combat awareness that decays as you get hit by attacks before tapping into a 'heroism/life/endurance/stamina' bar that can only be recovered by performing epic slo-mo finishing moves. Why is this some sort of game-breakingly bad mechanism?

Try the epic finishing moves on low heath surrounded by a horde, I died but yeah

It's a good game that I can enjoy playing.

and the way the shields/Armour thing works is similar to the shields on halo, which were some of OXM's top rated games with a 10/10 and a 9/10 and great reviews.

not to spark any arguments, just saying

Probably once it goes half price a few months after the release. Tbh I wasn't that impressed with the demo version it felt un polished, it felt like it was trying to be Gears of War and there was no cover system. The button mashing element and trying to pull of the special moves a complete chore.

Yeah it kinda blows my mind that some (not all, but what seems to be a decent number) of posters in this thread are criticizing the Space Marine demo for features, repetitive gameplay amongst them, that Halo is basically built around.

Yup I'm getting from GS for the BT skin. Honestly it looks like the best 40K console game to date. Combat isn't that easy on the hard setting, several times in fact I found myself having to fall back so that my shields could regin from the hoard. Probably not going to spring for the collector's edition though.

I'm buying it yeah, pre ordered and got it for £28, I'm happy with that.

Unlike some people, I really enjoyed the demo. The guns sounded like I would expect, i liked the crump of the bolter, I liked the Stalker Pat Bolter and the Power Axe, and I really want to see the heavy bolter in action!

And considering its got to be ultra violent and scrappy because its first and foremost an action video game, I don't really mind the fact that it may be considered unfluffy. I think they did a fething fantastic job all in.

I basically think that nerds over analyse everything and are far too fething fussy. It looks hugely enjoyable.

This game is not a first person shooter. It's a third person button masher with little shooting and lots of chainsword swinging.

If the game were anything like Halo, there would probably be many fewer complaints. As it stands, the game suffers from button mashing syndrome and has wanky movement. The controls don't feel fluid, and the only way to dodge an enemy's blow is to do a somersault in a random direction.

Pre-ordered it from Steam a week ago, and have been enjoying both the demo and the free copy of Darksiders that came with it. I'm really excited for the game to come out in full. Hopefully it will have better movement and less repetition, but even if it doesn't, I still loved the game enough to pay full price.

I play video games for the story and background, not to sit around and analyze it while thinking i couldve done a better job. Oblivion was kinda glitchy and choppy at times and the controls werent the greatest but its one of the best games ive ever played. Im getting the game because its based around the background of my favorite hobby. End of story (insert icon of ork giving the middle finger here)

I've got one small question though. Yesterday I saw an download on PSN to "enable the rise above lvl 5 in Multiplayer" it also said something like, this would enable more features and downloads.

So ... if I understand this correctly, thye are telling me that I have to shell out another 7.99€ to be able to play more than basic Multiplayer ?

Please correct me if I'm wrong or if I misread / misunderstood this.

Thank you,
Ashrag
