Announcing Comikaze: Annhilation! $2,000 in prizes! Pictures and Post event coverage pg 7 @ 2011/09/02 06:49:33

Post by: Reecius

Buy your tickets here. $50 which includes admission to the expo!

The Zero Comp team must have done something right with the Bay Area Open because the organizers of a very large Pop Culture Expo, Comikaze contacted us and asked us to run their 40K GT!

This event looks like it is going to be fantastic! It is very similar to Comicon in San Diego, with Movie Stars, Writers, Artists, Music, Cosplay, Anime, etc. Stan Lee is even on board with this, and they have Elvira doing TV commercials for them.

The 40K event itself will be run by the team and I, and will be very similar to the Bay Area Open in format, which means you can expect a simple, fun, well organized event. Check out any of the reviews on the Bay Area Open to hear what other gamers had to say, it was nearly all glowingly positive, which made us at TO's very happy to hear!

We are leveling up our terrain so that EVERY board will have a set of nicely painted, themed terrain that will absolutely provide plenty of cover to create fun, tactical games. We listened to you all last time and will make sure that each board is both aesthetically pleasing and well covered.

And yes, $2,000 in prizes is not a joke! The guys backing this event are serious about making this thing huge and we are only too happy to help. The prize love is going to be spread around for everyone to enjoy. We will have door prizes EVERY round of play. Big prizes for top finishers in Generalship, Renaissance Man, and Hobbyist as well as loads of other fun prizes, too! Not to mention swag bags, and all kinds of other goodies.

This is going to be a great event, and each ticket grants admission to the expo itself, so you can walk around and check out all the cool stuff to see.

Clear your calendars and get ready for a fun GT at the Los Angeles Convention Center with the Zero Comp team at Comikaze!

Tickets are $50, which includes admission to the expo. I will update this thread as soon as they are available to purchase. We anticipate that this event will sell out so please jump on them quickly. Only 64 spots! Don't miss out on this one guys, it will be a blast.

There will be a lot more to come on this one, and I will keep everyone updated as things develop.

Here are the official rules:

Comikaze: Annihilation 40K Missions and Rules

Day 1: Mission 1: Dawn of War, Annihilation.
Day 1: Mission 2: Pitched Battle, Capture and Control.
Day 1: Mission 3: Dawn of War, Seize Ground (3 Objectives).
Day 1: Mission 4: Spearhead, Capture and Control.
Day 2: Mission 5: Spearhead, Annihilation.
Day 2: Mission 6: Pitched Battle, Seize Ground (5 Objectives).

Why are we going with book standard missions? Because we feel that they bring the greatest degree of balance to the game and are how the game was designed to be played. These are missions that are simple, functional, balanced, fun and that everyone knows how to play and prepare for. These missions allow you to play the game you know with a standard army built to GW guidelines. You will therefore be able to play at your best without having to worry about figuring out new and potentially very different scenario rules.
The INAT FAQ (http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/inat_faq.jsp) will be used for this event.

Rules Judgments

Rules issues will be dealt with swiftly by either one of our roaming judges or by asking the sitting judge handling data entry. We have a clear hierarchy for our rules disputes. All issues will be dealt with in this order, and all judgments are final.

1. GW official rules.
2. GW official FAQs and Erratas.
3. INAT FAQ.
4. Consensus of those judges present at the time of the incident.

Painting

Every army must be painted to a three color minimum. The painting Rubric is available here: http://bloodofkittens.com/bayareaopen/files/2011/02/paintrubric.pdf If your army is not painted to a three color standard, you are ineligible for any prizes. Paint judging will occur during the lunch break or both days, please leave your army out until you have been paint judged.

Bracketing

We are using Swiss pairings, meaning that players play other players with the same record. Pairings will be randomly determined within those brackets. A tie is worth a half a win, or 0.5 points. Strength of Schedule will be used for tie breakers.

Comp and Sports

There will be no comp scores at this event. We feel that the game has an inbuilt comp system with the rulebooks and Codexes. We do not feel that a second, player created level of comp is necessary. So bring whatever army you want to play!

Sportsmanship will be handled as a simple thumbs-up, thumbs-down check box on the results sheet.

The temptation to ding someone on sports after a tough loss is often too much for many players to resist. We therefore are providing a very narrowly defined set of terms under which a player may mark their opponent with a thumbs down mark on sportsmanship. This system is intended to punish those who are being abusive, but to not allow chimpmunking.

Legitimate reasons to give an opponent a thumbs down on sports:

1. Your opponent was 15 or more minutes late to the round.
2. Your opponent was verbally abusive. This does not mean you argued with your opponent or that your personalities clashed, but that they were verbally abusive and insulting.
3. Your opponent intentionally cheated. Be prepared to support your case to a judge.
4. Your opponent slow played. We define slow playing as not completing 4 game turns of play. In the case of 20 or less minutes left to play, divide the time remaining between players to complete one full GAME turn. Time each other during this period to ensure that each player has an equal amount of time to complete a full game turn. If one player does not finish within their limit, the other player can force them to stop and then begin their turn. This mechanic is in place to ensure no one is slow played out of a turn of play.

What does NOT constitute a thumbs down on sports?

1. You argued over rules with your opponent.
2. Your opponent beat you.
3. You didn’t like your opponent’s army.
4. Your opponent likes Tranformers Generation 1. Clearly Beast Wars was the best!! Nerd Rage!!

A negative mark on sportsmanship will be met with administrative action as follows:

1. First thumbs down: A verbal warning from a judge, up to reversing a win to a loss.
2. Second thumbs down: Reversing a win to a loss, up to disqualification from any prize support.
3. Third thumbs down: disqualification from any prize support, up to expulsion from the event with no refund of the ticket price.
4. Fourth thumbs down: Expulsion from the event with no refund of the ticket price.

Modeling for Advantage

There is a fine line between creative freedom and modeling for advantage. We do not wish to stifle anyone’s creativity, but in the end, this is a game that relies heavily upon the physical characteristics of the models being used.

Modeling for advantage will be handled on a case by case basis. To resolve a possible abusive situation, follow these steps:

1. Ask the player to play the model as if it were a GW standard, modern version.
2. Call a judge to ask for a judgement.
3. Possibly substitute the model with an appropriate replacement.

Examples of what we consider modeling for advantage:

1. Using out of date and inappropriately sized models such as the rogue trader era Eldar Avatar (which currently is a large, monstrous creature model but back then, was the size of a Space Marine, which would now grant huge advantages due to being so much smaller) or Gorka Morka Trukks (which are less than half the size of modern versions). If an army is made predominantly of Rogue Trader era minis (or any era) and is clearly going for a theme, then exceptions will be made. If it appears to a judge that the player is in fact modeling for advantage, then action will be taken.
2. Increasing or decreasing the size of models to gain an advantage in gaining or granting cover. Custom Battle Wagons often fall into this category.
3. Altering a model to increase the range of a model or to benefit your LOS.

WYSIWYG

All models are expected to be WYSIWYG as much as is reasonable. Proxies are not permitted. However, counts as armies are acceptable and encouraged. What’s the difference? That can be a tough call to make in some cases. Judges will determine what is acceptable or not and all judgments are final. If you feel your army is questionable, contact a TO in advance to clear any confusion.
Proxies: Using Necron Warriors as Lootas in an Ork army, etc.

Counts As: Using Ultra Marines colored models with Blood Angels rules. Using custom Adeptus Mechanicus converted models with Daemon rules. The key is that everything is easily identifiable and appropriately equipped.

Terrain

Hills: All hills are open terrain, granting cover via LOS blocking/interference as normal.

Barriers: All barriers grant cover to infantry, bikes, jump infantry, Jet Bikes, and Calvary/Beasts even if they do not actually cover 50% of the model. Vehicles, Walkers, and Monstrous Creatures must be 50% covered as normal to receive a save.

Buildings/ruins: All Buildings or Ruins are area terrain and have as many levels as physically can hold models. Each level is 3” up or down, even if they are disproportionately higher or lower than this. Any building that a model cannot physically be placed inside, is considered a ruin with 1 (or more, depending on the building) levels. It is never considered impassible for the purposes of deepstriking, etc.

Rock Towers: Are impassible.

All other terrain functions as outlined in the book.

What to bring.
-Your army.
-A rule book, army book, and game aids such as dice, etc.
-A copy of your list for each opponent (6), judges, and yourself (8 total). You do not have to submit your list before the tournament. You are required to give each opponent a copy of your list before each game.
-3 objective markers. These can be on either 25mm or 40mm bases.
-A totally sweet mullet. This won't help your score, but it will impress the ladies!

Yeah, I bet! That would be really, really cool. I had a chance to meet Grant Morrison at my local shop but I got sick the night he was there and missed it. I don't want to have something like that happen again.

Plus, we get to play 40K! That is a sweet deal in my opinion.

Yeah, I was planning on going to Neon but this is so much closer, would require no hotel room, and I won't lose more money gambling.

On the other hand, I have always wanted to do a Tourney in Vegas.

Damn I hate it when multiple events are on the same weekend.

It honestly might all come down to who is going to what tournament.

I don't like playing against bare plastic armies. Tournaments are competitive, and I want it to be all competition, that includes painting. The painting is part of the competition, with out it you take out half the competitive aspect of the hobby. I am not sure I used competitive enough so let me say this. Painting an army is just as important competitively as generalship imo.

I will try and make it Reece, It will be easier than getting to Vegas.

@ overwatch
Hope you can make it! Would be good to have you.

@skullking
Painting is half the hobby, in our opinion. I got a 3,000pt wood elf painted to a three color standard in one night. It isn't hard to do, really. Base them black and dry brush them twice, you're done. Prime them wbite, ink them once, and dry brush them once, and you're done.

Part of the appeal of a gt is that everything is painted and looks great. I am crazy busy too, but if you take a weekend of your life, it's done and you have an army that looks nice and is ready for tournamemt play.

Hope you can make it!

I wish you guys were on the east coast!

I do have a question about your sportsmanship rubric. Your criteria for giving a thumbs down are as follows:
Reecius wrote:Legitimate reasons to give an opponent a thumbs down on sports:

We define slow playing as not completing 3 game turns of play.

This is SO narrow! Due to your rubric, someone could not get a thumbs down if they completed 3 turns. If they had to be corrected over and over on rules from their own book. If they seemingly unintentionally played things wrong to their own advantage often. If they challenged every basic ruling. Or all of the above.

I'm not saying I'd necessarily give someone a thumbs down for isolated things on my list above. But someone could do ALL of it, and still not qualify for a thumbs down on your list.

Basically, there's no room for a pretty bad game- only a game with blatant infractions:

1. Slow playing so bad you don't even finish the 3rd turn (does this really happen? )
2. Cheating
3. Swearing at their opponent? (Not sure what qualifies as verbal abuse, since you explicitly rule out arguing over rules, despite the circumstances)

I think that's making someone go too far to give a thumbs down. Basically, you have thumbs up covering the entire spectrum above the base level of "cheating" (a VERY serious accusation at a tournament, and one most people won't want to resort to). Thumbs down only covers basically prove-able cheating (with the exception of "verbal abuse").

On a more positive note, now that I've long-windedly tried to explain why I think your thumbs down criteria is too narrow... Have you read Mannahnin's article?
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/The_Pass_or_Fail_Method_of_Tournament_Sportsmanship_Scoring

I think that question is a bit better for a thumbs up / thumbs down event:

"Did my opponent's attitude and/or behavior make the game an UNpleasant experience, overall?"
Note to the player: Please be sure that your answer is based on your opponent's behavior as a person, not on their army, and certainly not on who won or lost. Thank you!

He then goes on to give the consequences of getting a thumbs down. Given his looser criteria, his marks are more gradual but still serious. However, I believe that gives the flexibility of someone to ding someone for Sportsmanship... rather than your rubric, which only punishes out and out cheating. It also results in your affirming someone's opinion (or disagreeing with it) that the person was cheating, as they have to support their finding to a judge... and that's a whole 'nother can of worms that would be a pain to deal with on the day of...

Meaning most people will probably just put thumbs up for the rubric and leave it at that. If that's what you're looking for, I think it's good... but to call it "Sportsmanship" rather than, I don't know... "Did they get a legal game in?" I think you should loosen up your criteria a bit.

I hear what you're saying, but the point of the system is to do specifically what you said, to only punish blatant offenders. Sports is incredibly subjective, like comp, and opens the door to abuse. As the supreme court stated, i'd rather let 10 guilty men go than condemn one innocent.

We'd rather see a few people get away with being slightly douchey than have one good guy get chipmunked out of winning.

The definition "did my opponant's behaivor make the game unfun" is too nebulous for me. We strictly, and narrowly define what constitutes a thimbs down on purpose to intentionally avoid having them. If someone is behaving that badly, they will be dealt with harshly. If someone loses a game and in the heat of the moment gives a thumbs down in a looser system which causes that person to not win, then that system has failed, imo.

We take the attitude that we are all adults and sometimes you will encounter those individuals whom just rub you the wrong way. It is unfortunate, but a fact of life. Because you may not totally enjoy a game with someone, doesn't constitute giving you the power to take away their ability to win an event they paid to attend.

I' m not sayong our philosophy on the matter is absolutely right, or the only way, but the way we choose to organize our events. We used the exact same system at the bao, and anyone who said anything about it, said they liked it.

We appreciate the input though, and are always open to suggestions. We like this system as it has served us well in every event we have run so far.

Oh, and it should read plays through turn 4, not 3, that is a typo, thanks for bringing that to my attention. But yeah, sometimes guys only get through turn 2!

I would totally come to this if I didn't always have to work every weekend ever.......like......every one.

Also, how come no big 2 day 40k events are held in San Diego? I love to play, but driving 2 hours up to LA and having to stay in a hotel and buy con admission is just beyond my budget. Oh well =/

Hope it's a good time for you folks. Perhaps I'll be able to make it to the BAO next year round!

That's a pretty awesome rule. There is some minor potential for shenanigans, as per the anti-chess-clock arguments of "my opponent will always have to act during my time," but frankly, if the game is that close, people should be sticking to the most-likely-to-matter interactions anyway.

@yakface & janthkin
Yeah, it's my creation. It was something I wanted to do at the bao but decided to pass on because I wanted to keep things as simple as possible. But, at the bao a few players (janthkin, grimgob and others) lost a game because of time when a player took too long to finish a turn. That is not fun nor fair.

There is some possibility for shady play, but I really think this will help to avoid slow plah nonesense.

@skrewpa and axman
Looking forward to having you guys! This will be a really cool tournament.

I'm a san diego boy myself, and I agree 100%. There should be an sd tournament and we're working on making that happen. It is a beautiful city with a big gaming community. There is no reason a gt shouldn't be there.

Oh yeah, for sure. I am 99% certain it will happen in the 2012 season, it is easy for us now since we have the terrain, the know-how and I know the majority of gamers down there. It is pretty much a no-brainer for us to host a tournament in SD.

Plus that means I get to come hang out with my friends and go drink some beers on the beach!

That is like a win-win-win!

We will definitely let you know when and where it happens so you guys can rally all the GE, and Riverside gamers.

Hopefully you can make Comikaze. Maybe if you request the time off this far out in advance, you can pull it off. To save money, the Zero Comp team car pools and shares hotel rooms. You can get roll away beds and stuff, so you can get 3 in a room comfortably, or you can go crazy like we sometimes do and squeeze 6 into a room! Comfortable? No. Cheap? Yes!

So you may be able to go with some of the SD guys who have already bought tickets to make it a cheap trip. Plus, this will be a pretty unique tournament since it is happening in the middle of a comicon style expo. I think it is going to be a really cool experience. We are really getting excited for it.

Well, the problem is I work for family, and between my mother, myself, and one additional employee we keep the business open. I work Friday and Sunday, both of which are days that nobody else can work the 10 hour shifts I put in. As a result, I'm VERY rarely able to take those days off for something like a con. It's the reason I didn't go to Comi-Con this year. I MIGHT have been able to get the days off if I had known about this a few months ago, but I already booked a 2 week vacation in October, so it's unlikely I'll be able to take another weekend off in November. It sucks, but them's the breaks. I'm very much hoping to make the BAO next year, but I have to wait until after January 1st to know for sure. We shall see.

I appreciate the thorough response about the sportsmanship system, Reecius!

Is it just me thinking incorrectly, or do most fantasy tournaments require both players to play an equal number of turns? I haven't heard of what seems to happen in 40k where one players gets in a turn and another doesn't... that just seems plain wrong. If both players can't get a turn in, none should be played... or a system like yours that at least allows the second player a response.

I.e. in fantasy I haven't played in a "strict dice down" event- you play until both players have had an equal number of turns. Maybe it's just the ones I've been to, though...

I lost this year at the BAO to the IG player that won. he got four turns and I only got three. I was winning before they called 15 min. he begged and I said we dont have enough time. He said he would hurry. made it through him contesting all but one objective, then shooting everything (slowly) at my last objective sitters, and the game ends with him contesting evrything at the top of the turn 4 then "dice down". I was pissed. he only had mostly empty chimeras left on his way to a tabling. this game was the only reason he won the whole thing.

I needed literally 10 seconds of my turn to turn a loss into a draw (move 1 unit), and didn't get it.

My complaints are tempered by knowing that it was turn 7, and if I hadn't taken any pictures, I may have had enough time, but I like Reece's new system, as it obviates the chances of this happening again.

Ah man, never mind I'm not going now. I have played James a few times and I don't think he slow plays purposely. If you didn't get through a turn I doubt it was intentional but I echo your sentiments, and most of the sentiments here, that the 20 minute finish a turn rule is a great step in the right direction. Nice idea Reece.

I don't think he slow played me. I think we didnt have enough time for a turn. he begged till we played. We did not in fact have enough time to play a turn. He only got his half and it was the only reason he won the match. Fact, fact, and fact with no incinuation of slow play at all. If we only have 20 min. left and we are only getting to turn 4, from now on my foot goes down and game over. this is like the second time I havnt gotten my turn at a tourny.

I must have misread the first post Grimgob, I thought you were saying he intentionally moved and shot slowly on his turn. My mistake. I have to agree with you about the foot down thing. Unless my opponent agrees to revert back to the previous turns positions should we fail to complete the next turn, I refuse to play further turns with what seems like insufficient time.

Yeah, Grimgob could have given James a thumbs down on comp because they did not finish 4 turns, and it would have been fully justified.

That was a bum deal and convinced me to add this rules mechanic when I was on the fence about it. I am glad you guys like it as it is an idea I have had for a while, but didn't implement. I think it will solve a lot of problems, but it could also have some hurt feelings on the first go around as people get used to it. The player doing the timing will be required to give minute updates, so the controlling player completes their turn.

@RiTides
in 40K both players should play the same amount of turns. We are implementing the timing rule to ensure this happens.

@Aldarrion
Sounds like you have a full plate. Well, hopefully you can make the BAO 2012 as it is going to be bigger and better than the BAO 2011.

@OverwatchCNC
I do not have the exact ticket sales figures at this moment as the web guy is updating the site, but there are still some left as of the last update.

I've got a question about the "Modeling for Advantage"; the example states using OOP RT era minis is modeling for advantage.
I have a RT era CSM army that I've got quite a bit of time/money into getting all era correct minis for. So does that mean even if my whole army is from that era, I automatically get all thumbs down?

Post by: Reecius

Not at all, please bring that army as it sounds bitchin!

The example I used (and I will clarify this in the original post) is an Avatar that is literally the size of a space marine.

So, he can hide behind other infantry, tanks, etc.

The point being that back then, it was a totally different model/rules set/concept than it is now and as such, grants a huge advantage over the appropriate model.

Thanks for asking that as if you were thinking it, I am sure others were, too.

So yeah, bring the rogue trader era army, I would like to see that. Those crazy old chaos models had so much character.

Post by: yakface

Reece,

I think the real big issue is when someone is mixing old and new models in the same army. Obviously the old Avatar is probably an issue no matter what, but old Ork Trukks, for example wouldn't be a problem at all provided that the rest of the army was also comprised of old Ork models as well.

So I'd suggest a revision to the rule something like so:

1. Armies that utilize specific out of date and inappropriately sized models such as the Rogue Trader era (1st edition) Eldar Avatar or Gorka Morka Ork Trukks (both of which have the advantage of being much easier to hide behind terrain/other units than their larger-sized current incarnations) in order to gain an in-game advantage. Obviously if an army is comprised entirely of Rogue Trader era models then there generally won't be a problem, but if a player is only using a few specific models that clearly give them an advantage, then this will typically not be allowed.

Post by: Reecius

I agree that that is a very reasonable rule, however, it doesn't mitigate the actual advantage gained.

Using all Rogue trader era Eldar for example, doesn't change the fact that the Rogue Trader Avatar is still only 2" tall.

Same with Gorka Morka trukks, they are tiny and having lots of them as opposed to 1 doesn't alter this advantage, except in Trukks giving cover to one another. Interacting with terrain still grants a very large advantage.

It is a sticky problem though, I agree. We don't want to stifle any creativity, but if someone comes with an army that really does grant an unfair advantage, I feel it is our responsibility as TO's to intervene.

Honestly, I am hoping it isn't an issue. We have not had any problems with it at any of our events to date. It is just something that people always ask about and want to have addressed.

That's exactly why I left the wording in the rule above vague enough to allow you to still rule either way no matter what...I just think that's a better guideline to give people to understand why things are or aren't allowed.

It's because we're sexy and show up to cons dressed like zardoz (if you don't get the refference, reecius posted a pic on the first page).

Awesome! Glad to have you.

@Imperial Renegade
Yeah, it does seem like a lot of the tournaments go on out here. Hey, we want to start traveling with our event to different cities. Maybe we will make it to the East Coast. I would love to do events in your area as I have never been there before.

As long as enough people were interested that we could at least break even, I would be down for it.

i got my ticket a few days ago just have a few questions,
Do we need to supply our own objective markers?
And with the modeling for advantage, should attack bike be based on a 60mm or is it ok that they are based on attack bike bases such as http://dragonforge.com/for%20sale%20images/dforge%20items%20for%20sale/base_blanks/attack%20base%20blank.jpg

thanks and cant wait to go

There are still some spots left. We don't have an exact count because the ticket processing is handled by the promotions company. They said they're moving very fast though, and that we may need to expand into more square footage to accommodate everyone.

We would love to the have the Sprue Posse guys! Tell them to come out of hiding and grab a ticket!

Hey guys, we just found out where we are staying.

We will be staying at the Ritz Milner in Los Angeles, which is a nice hotel and the rooms are only $83 a night.

It is getting close to selling out, so grab a room quick if you want to stay there. Otherwise, there are a ton of hotels in every price range around the area.

Hey Reece, I have a question about the painting chart and the part where it says: "a large amount of models with difficult
conversions" under the 4 points part of conversions. What would be considered difficult?

@blasto
Difficult conversions would be those involving high level modeling skills such as dremelling, green stuff sculpting, comeplex swaps, filling away of symbols, etc.

@dave
Glad to have you! Those black templars of yours are going to be bringing the pain, i'm sure.

@djphranq
Sweet! Looking forward to having you.

@overwatchcnc
Glad you're coming! You will need three objective markers, although they can be 25mm or 40mm. They can help your score but won't hurt it. If they're not done, don't sweat it, we won't consider them for your paint score. If they are done, set them out with your army and we'll include it in your total score.

Just to clarify, they sent me an email immediately upon ordering the tickets (on the 16th) letting me know they would be sending them to me later and then last Wednesday they sent me another email with a PDF attached of the ticket (sent from webmaster@extimahosting.com).

The correct answer should be that you show up with 7 copies of your list.
1 for the judges
1 for yourself
5 to hand to each of your opponents

Correct, we should present our opponent with a copy of the list. Could this be enforced? At Ard Boyz, prelims and semis, as well as the BAO I had opponents who not only didn't offer a list but when prompted didn't have one to give me. It always makes me a little suspicious when someone at a major event doesn't outright present the list let alone have one to give me, perhaps I am being paranoid but it gets under my skin for some reason.

The point limit had been decided on because of time issues. Having 4 games in 1 day can take a toll on people. We also plan to drop this years Bay Area Open to 1750pts as well for the same reasons. As far as capture and control being used, its a great way to spread out the overall field of play. As mentioned before, book missions offer the greatest degree of balance to the game.

Question about the objective markers... do they need to be on a base? Can we just use beads or something? Or is it a visibility thing and we want to make sure we see them?

@djphranq
We are really laid back on objective markers. The size isn't important. We prefer them to be on 25mm or 40mm bases as this makes things nice and easy, but if you have large beads or stones, that is fine so long as your opponent understands what you are using them for from the word go.

Good to know, I have a few friends attending Neoncon for WarmaHordes, glad to hear they will have a good time. Any word yet on how early/late to arrive to avoid the lines? The terrain looks great btw Reece. I was talking to Grimgob at the Ard boyz semis and I can't wait to see what you two have in store for the theme table!

Important Information!

I just got a phone call from the company organizing the entire expo and had a rather interesting conversation.

Gamers will not be able to get in early. What this means if you have to go in with general admittance.

What that means, is that we have no idea how long it will take for everyone to get in. This company has never had a gaming event at one of their expos before, and so we are experiencing some last minute logistical hiccups here.

So, we are moving back the "official" start time of day 1 to 11am just to make sure everyone has time to get in. That in turn means we will only have time for 3 rounds on day 1, most likely. What we will do is set an official start time of 11, but if we can start earlier, we will, and if possible, we will play 4 rounds Saturday.

Sunday will largely depend on how Saturday goes, but we will set the "official" start at 11am again. We will try to start earlier, but we have seriously no control over this, our hands are tied. For the most part this means that we will end roughly at the same time on Saturday, but quite a bit later on Sunday than originally planned.

The moral of the story: Arrive Early!

The doors to the expo open at 9am, be there early to be the first ones in line. DO NOT BE LATE! I can't emphasize this enough, be first in line so we can start as early as possible. Be in line at 8:30am.

If anyone's travel plans going home on Sunday are really screwed up, such as having to change a flight, come find me at the event and I will make sure you get taken care of.

We're really sorry for the last minute change here everyone, but we just found out and there is nothing we can do about it. It is a first year, hugely ambitious project so some bumps in the road are to be expected, we only ask that everyone comes with a good attitude ready to throw some dice in the middle of a huge event and have fun with it.

Feel free to hit me with any questions, and I will answer them to the best of my ability.

Thanks, guys.

Well, live and learn - now you have some additional valuable experience for future events, right?

And just because things are not fun enough, don't forget that Daylight Wasting Time goes into effect Sunday morning at 2AM. Falling back 1 hour.
So 2AM becomes 1AM. At least you get an extra hour of sleep and the drive home will be in twighlight rather than pitch dark.

Yeah, that is the worst part of it. We will be leaving last and it is going to be a looong day for us! If it is at all possible to get 4 games in Saturday, we will.

I wish it could be helped, but this event will have 10,000+ attendees, and the company running it did it the way they always do. This wasn't made clear to us when we were drawing up the contract as they didn't think to mention it and we didn't think to ask.

Lesson learned. It's better we know now than the day of.

To help facilitate getting in quickly, make sure you know where you are going when you get there:

That's a map of the expo, know where you are going =)

Is there a reason not to drop a round, and do 2 on sunday, ending at a more reasonable hour (5 games)?

Genuinely curious from a TO perspective.

We are using a straight Win/Loss/draw record to determine the overall winners, using Swiss perfect. With the amount of players signed up, 6 rounds are needed to give us a all around top player.

My prediction...

the line and registration for the con will delay the start of the game by 2 hours, so each game and lunch will have half an hour cut out to compensate. Day 2 will start on time but the game and lunch time will still be cut to keep consistent and every one can go get a nice dinner somewhere fancy before driving home.

The Convention Center site reccomends the "south lot" which is probably an underground lot below the building itself. Their are also pay for parking lots across the street.
Any parking in that area will require a daily fee.
On a side thought for Reece: These Conventions don't run 24 hours a day. The Comikaze FAQ indicates they close down at 7PM on Saturday, 6PM on Sunday. Meaning we will be in the middle of Round 6 when they close down the convention.
Saturday 7PM ending time also looks a little shaky considering the late start. It may require a bit of strict control on the timing, like if your opponent takes time between rounds to get a pic with Elvira (this is her last Convention ever, BTW) and is more than 5 or 10 minutes late getting back to the table he auto-forfiets the match. Lunch may be problem too.

In short, get their early, try to get your games done early, don't fuss around or disapear between matches, and bring a sack lunch just in case.

If you live in the LA area or are staying outside of downtown you may want to consider the metro. I live in Pasadena and am on the fence about just taking the Metro down. The light rail in LA while sparce does do the trick from certain areas.

This could influence your army choice though, I know if I take the metro I will be playing my Loganwing because it fits in one case and in my backpack!

Definitely a unique event! We're surrounded by Cosplayers and pop culture fans of all sorts.

Stan Lee came in to a hero's welcome and we've seen Porn Stars, Movie Stars, Writers and weirdos of all sizes and types!

Ernest Borgnine came up and asked us what we were selling.... ahaha, didn't really get it but still good to meet him.

Yakface drew against Warboss Russ first round.

Janthkin beat Skrewpa, Dave Fay won his battle against Purifier Grey Knights, ChristianA beat Libby's wolves. Blackmoor lost a tough game to Fuegan17, Stave Stiff lost to Blasto's Orks. Nick the Wise lost his game to DoA/Mech blood angels.

We ended up with 26 players, less than we assumed we'd get, but we lost a number last minute because things were so hectic.

The event is a bit crazy and less organized on the administrative end than we'd like to see, but it was a first year project and huge in scope. The tournament itself is running smoothly though and Reecius pulled some strings to get it started as early as possible.

The field is smaller than anticipated, but 90% solid players with a lot of stand outs. It's going to be a tough road to the top! Everyone is having a good time and we anticipate seeing who the winner will be.

Just wanted to thank you guys for running such a great event. The Wednesday, Nov 2nd, my dad had a heart attack. He died the Friday night before Comikaze. I had been sullen for most of the week and the tournament really helped to liven me up and help me stay positive. I was very happy with my second best general prize, and very happy that all of my opponents were exceptionally fun and challenging to play against, not a single bad apple. Thanks again guys! Thanks to the Zero Comp guys for running an outstanding event. Its good to hear the Comikaze folks want you to run their future events. The venue looks like it had the extra space to accomodate another dozen tables easy.
Great call on using vouchers so the winners could pick out the plastic-crack they actually want/need (I got my last set of Assault Termies needed to field a full Deathwing for my next Army...and yes they will be PURPLE!!!!!)
Nice job on getting the Unicorn girls as trophy queens. Classic.
Looking forward to the next Bay Area Open and any other events you guys get a chance to host.

hey, guys, just wanted to opine for a bit. sounds like you had a really great event! I'm trying to get my brother on board to head out to Bay Area Open or maybe even Comikaze [perhaps both?] next year.

also, I'm really enjoying the podcasts as well! definitely looking forward to more of that. if I could be so bold as to offer just a couple pieces of constructive criticism, however:

-- maybe work on the audio or something? perhaps it's the way I downloaded the mp3, but the quailty is kinda suspect & a couple times it sounds like someone's humping the mic or something? not really that bad, but well...
-- also, try not to out the underage drinkers, hehe... unless, of course, it was his 21st birthday, in which case, welcome to the fold...

thanks again!

BTW, Reece (and anyone else associated with Frontline Gaming), you guys should really add the URL to your site into your profile so that people can always easily find your site...for example Reece the URL button for your profile takes you to your personal blog, which probably now isn't as useful to have as a link to frontline. Or at least add the link into your sigs!

But anyways, as always, thanks again for running the event guys. I know it takes a lot of time and effort to do so, and I am super-grateful that you did (and do). While the venue may have not been ideal IMHO, I think you did pretty much the very best you could given the circumstance and I did have an incredibly enjoyable experience overall.

In fact, although I know it doesn't have that much to do with from an organizational perspective, I do still have to say that the overall collection of games I played against 5 great people in this tournament was probably the best 5 game stretch ever in a tournament for me.

Here's my mini-tournament report:

My first game against Warboss_Russ was filled with crazy emotional swings...I know that heavy-Battlewagon Ork armies are really a tough match-up for my Kan wall, but when I got a lucky Loota shot through to wreck Ghaz's Battlewagon Russ gambled not using his Waaagh to auto-pass the pin test and of course proceeded to fail it! This led to Ghaz & his Nob squad being all bunched up in front of the wreck, and I was able to hit that unit with all 9 of my Grotzookas in my following turn, with 2 of the 3 Kan units scoring 27 and 28 wounds each! When the smoke cleared, only Ghaz was left and even he had suffered a couple of wounds. But Russ still had a couple of Battlewagons left filled with Slugga boyz and after a few Deff-Rolla rams in his next turn it still looked like he might roll through the rest of my army. But I was able to counter-charge the Battlewagons with my remaining Kans/Dread and was able to roll those magic '6's to hit them in combat and take them both out...so all I had left to do was finish off one of his two Slugga boyz mobs and I'd be up by 1 Kill Point. Of course, my Kans in combat hit like 5 times and I rolled something like three '1's to wound and when combat resolution was totaled up, his boyz mob still had 11 guys in it and was fearless...one more casualty and he would have been taking a morale check at like -8 or something crazy. And then of course the roll to see if the game goes into turn 6 or not and Russ rolls the magical '1' to seal a well earned draw with each of us earning '8' kill points against the other.

It was an absolutely crazy roller-coaster ride of a game, and certainly some of the most fun I've had in a long time and I figured surely none of my other games would be nearly as much fun.

Game 2 was against a Chaos player (whose name escapes me because I have an absolutely terrible memory). It was capture & control and I think that he may have been a bit intimidated at the sight of all those Kans & Dreads, so it seemed to me like he was aiming to play for the draw, keeping everything in his army back on his objective except for an outflanking unit of Chosen in a Rhino and a Deep Striking 3-man Termie unit (which frankly was unlikely ever to be enough to even contest my objective unless I rolled really, really badly as I had both my Loota mobs, a mob of 20 Shoota boyz, a Grot mob, 1 Dread and 3 Kans held back to hold my objective).

I was able to deal with his two Deep Strike/outflanking units, so it really came down to whether or not I could swamp his objective in time, which as he failed to slow down my Battlewagon, it began to look pretty grim for him. But through the whole thing, this guy kept the most positive and fun-loving attitude going. Even after the game was over he still wanted to resolve a close combat that would have had literally not impact on the game...he just wanted to see if his guys could pull of a combat win (they didn't, sadly). I totally relate to that! Even when I'm getting my butt handed to me, if time in the round is permitting, I love to play the game out to the bitter end just to see if one of my units can pull of some heroic action, so the fact that this guy had that same positive attitude was amazingly refreshing and I think it would have been a pleasure to *lose* the game to him if the tables had been turned.

So with two absolutely phenomenal games under my belt, surely round 3 would have to be a letdown and I'd get stuck with a boring game against a bummer opponent, right? Well, I just happened to get paired against paintedpotato's sisters army. I had never gotten to play against a sisters army using the new WD codex (and barely ever fought against the old Witch Hunters) but I had always felt that the new army list looked a lot more deadly then some people gave it credit for...and sure enough his army was literally packed to the brim with melta weaponry and that crazy-unkillable Saint Celestine, who is just such an amazing disruption force just by herself.

As the game wound on, paintedpotato's nearly legendary ability to roll his saving throws was only matched by his complete inability to destroy my Kans & Dreads with literally dozens of melta shots. My lack of experience with sisters meant that I wasn't really sure at any point exactly what I should be doing and having the thread of Celestine popping back up in the middle of my deployment zone on any of his turns was amazingly nerve-wracking. The highlight of the game had to be when I fired a Loota mob at one of his twin-Melta Immolators and ended up doing two penetrating hit. He calmly picked up two dice and, as he did numerous times throughout the game he assured me that '[he had] faith' and then proceeded to roll for his 6+ invulnerable save. One dice plunked on the table as a '6' and the other careened off the table onto the floor. He picked it back up and rolled again...surely there was no way he could roll another '6', right? But I don't think I need to tell you what happened!

However, at the end of the day his amazing saves just couldn't stop my Kans and Dreads if his Meltas couldn't destroy them (which they didn't) and Celestine failed to get up right when he needed her the most and I ended up squeaking out the win.

While this game may not have had the crazy swings of emotion that my first game did, there were just so many crazy things that happened during this game that it felt like I was watching an epic blockbuster summer movie. When it was all over I felt like I would love to play that game again just to see how it might turn out differently! And if there isn't a better indication of a great game then that, I don't know what it would be.

So I entered day 2 with a 2-0-1 record and I knew that I had an outside chance for overall tournament victory and a decent chance at winning some sort of prize at the end of the day if I did well in my last two games. Unfortunately, as I walked to my table I recognized a very familiar face. It is an incredibly good Space Wolf player (Lee) who I have faced probably more times recently in tournaments than I have with any other player (which is still only probably about 4 times, I think).

He quickly reminded me that he had never won against me, which I knew was a bad sign from watching football that anytime the announcer says something about how the kicker has some sort of streak going it always means that the streak is going to immediately end.

Although we had both subtly tweaked our lists since we last fought (me adding a Battlewagon and him dropping his twin-linked Autocannon Dreads for some Grey Hunter squads and a Fenrisian Wolf Pack to run with his twin Wolf Lords) I still felt like I had a good idea of exactly how I needed to play against him. I won the roll to go first and after I deployed pretty standard for Spearhead, he deployed completely castled in the corner...it was pretty clear that he was going to try to stay out of range of my Lootas the whole game and plink off enough of my units as I came towards him to guarantee a Kill Point victory for him.

Of course, that also would have given me the option to pull back my army and play the waiting game with him (forcing him to come to me or just sit there with a draw) but sadly I never got the option to even consider that tactic as he promptly seized the Initiative and with some amazing rolls he got two penetrating hits...one against my Dread and another against a Kan, both of which of course came up as either 'wrecked' or 'explodes'!

So I was already down a Kill Point going into my turn 1, which meant one thing...I would have to advance into him without the support of my Lootas (which is never good). But even with that bad start, I was able to maneuver into position with all my forces ready to strike in one nasty blow, which is the worst thing you can let a Kan Wall army do (its always best to try to force it to hit combat in waves and deal with each chunk separately). So he sallied forth with all his units in a desperate attempt to stop my Battlewagon before it could roll through his army doing deff-rolla hits on everything. However, all his melta-armed guys who hopped out of his vehicles failed to damage my Battlewagon (love the KFF!). Unfortunately, his Long Fangs had an absolutely amazing round of shooting and his damage rolls were totally on-point and one entire Kan mob that was poised to counter charge him was wiped out...but I still had my Battlewagon, perhaps. However, it was time for him to charge. He rolled for his Wolf Lord first, planning to nuke my wagon pretty easily...and failed to roll that elusive '6' to hit, huzzah for me! He then proceeded to roll for his Grey Hunters with Krak Grenades...rolling one '6' to hit, rolling another '6' to penetrate and then rolling a '3' (+1 for open-topped) to immobilize my precious Battlewagon. Of course, he then realized that he had done it wrong...the Krak Grenades technically went before the Powerfist attacks and therefore the Powerfist should automatically hit. Well, reluctantly I knew that the only fair course of action was to allow his Powerfist hits to auto-hit despite the fact that he had already rolled 'to hit' for them, and that naturally resulted in my Battlewagon exploding in a horrible fireball.

With one Kan mob and my Battlewagon wiped out in a single turn things were looking grim for me. But I had 1 1/2 Kan squadrons and a Dread left, along with nearly 60 shoota boyz all in position to try to wreak havoc on his units that were out of their transports now, so I knew I had a chance to at least make a game out of it. I shot and charged where I could and did some damage, taking his Powerfist Wolf Lord out and doing some serious damage to some of his Grey Hunters with the Grotzookas I had left. One of the combats lasted into his turn and he charged his remaining Wolf Lord and all of his Grey Hunters into it...meaning his entire army except for his transports and 2 Long Fang squads were now locked in combat in the middle of the table against 1 mob of Shoota Boyz and the remaining Powerklaw Nob from a 2nd mob. He naturally did tremendous damage to me and all I had left was a single nob after the dust cleared. I had lost the combat by seventy-bazillion and wanted nothing more than for my Nob to fall back so that my remaining 4 Kans and 20 Shoota boyz could absolutely light up what he had left and then charge them into dust. I picked up the dice and naturally rolled DOUBLE ONES.

Yes, it was that kind of game for me! Lee could only shake his head and apologize for my bad luck. So I lost out on firing those 4 Grotzooka shots (8 blasts) and 20 Shootas (34 shoota shots & 6 big shoota shots) and had to just charge into the combat. I can't even remember whether I won that round by a little or he did, but regardless, I didn't wipe out any more of his units and he promptly rolled to end the game on turn '5'. In the end, I only managed to get that single Kill Point (one of his Wolf Lords). I had whittled his Fenrisian Wolfs down to 1 model (which he had promptly hid behind a Rhino) and I had whittled down another Grey Hunter squad to 1 model (which he was able to run and embark into one of his Rhinos with) and with the game ending on turn '5' I lost any chance to kill his other Wolf Lord (who would have been instant-killed by my Kans most likely as that one didn't have the Eternal Warrior saga) and his other two Grey Hunter squads.

So it ended up being a 5 to 1 Kill Point loss for me. A sound beating, yet still a very enjoyable game despite any frustrations with wacky luck. You can tell that Lee is a very smart tactical player and the times I have managed to beat him or get a draw I've felt extremely lucky to do so. So I knew that it wouldn't be easy to beat him and a little swing of luck one way or another had a really strong chance of being the deciding factor because its highly unlikely for him to make a critical mistake or allow me to surprise him with a tactic that he's not expecting.

But as always, I have a great time playing against Lee and is another great example of someone who I respect and feel 'good' (as much as you can) about losing to. But with that loss I knew that I was totally out of the running for any kind of overall prize and likely out of the range of any prize at all. Luckily, my only real goal is ever to have a bunch of fun playing games (and try to win where I can, of course) and on that goal, I was now 4 for 4!

Recently I had been musing about how interesting it would be to field an Ork army with the max of 15 Deff Koptas, as it had occurred to me that having them in bigger squadrons would actually allow them to overcome some of their deficiencies (like not being able to successfully assault anything besides a tiny enemy units). Well, lo and behold for my final game up walks Mario (who has a Dakka handle, but I sadly don't remember what it is if he told me...and an even bigger apology if I've somehow misremembered your first name, I do literally have a HORRIBLE memory for those types of things) who is playing a horde Ork army that has 15 Koptas in it! I was really excited.

Of course, if there's one thing that really puts a kabosh on 15 Koptas, its 9 Kans and 2 Dreads protected by Kustom Force Fields. His Koptas were his main source of anti-vehicle attack power and my KFFs meant that his Rokkits would probably have a hard time shooting them to death and their CC abilities would absolutely tear his Koptas to pieces if he tried to charge me.

So he did his best and used his Koptas to harrass and slow me down while his hordes of boyz swarmed over most of the objectives, but once I whittled his Koptas down to nearly nothing (despite having a HELL of a time getting my Lootas to hit anything) he really had no answer for my wall of walking armor and I was able to pull all his boyz into combats against my walkers while I captured enough objectives to win the day.

So unfortunately while I got to see my dream of so many Koptas in action, the particular match-up of my army vs. his army was probably the worst setting possible to see how it should work, but he's local so we'll probably try to set up another game sometime with me fielding something different.

Amazingly, as with every single one of my opponents, he was incredibly friendly and gracious even when he realized that my army was going to be a really tough nut for his army to crack. And that meant I went 5 for 5 in getting fantastic people and having fantastically fun games.

While I ended up finishing out of any of the prizes, I did end up 3-1-1 overall and would not have changed a single thing about any of my games, because they were all so much damn fun. Although I didn't 'naturally' finish every single one of my games (the Sister of Battle and Ork games, both of which require a lot of rolling and moving ended up having to be called at turn 5 without rolling) the 1,50 point limit along with a fairly generous 2 hrs and 15 minutes meant that for the most part I was able to enjoy the games without having to completely rush and combined with 5 fantastic opponents meant that this tournament totally reaffirmed exactly why I enjoy 40K as much as I do.

So I'd like to thank each and every one of my opponents for just being great players, great sports and generally fun people to play against.

Ouch, sting!

Thanks for the game. It was a good way to end the day.

It is not that hard to roll 6's. You just have to visualize the 6 and watch it happen. Like right now I am visualizing a post edit.

Hmmmm, my post has been duly edited!

I totally saw your post and was like...aha, that is his Dakka handle! And then I somehow got it mixed up with someone else's!

Oh well.

And I need to figure out how I can fit in something in my army that just removes models from the table...I wish I could fit Old Zogwort in, then I could turn Celestine into a squig. That would be fun!

Saint Squigestine.
Martyred Lady of the Mushroom Beer.

Got to agree, No bad opponents, 5 great games. Although I ended up fighting Orks on both games 4 and 5, each Army was different and a real challange, beating John's 'Godzila movie theatre Orks by 1 KP and loosing to Russ's Battlewagon rush by 1 objective
I'm gonna remember that tactic of the grots stretched out holding 2 objectives, going to ground when getting shot up, removing casualties from the center (breaking coherency) so you still have a Grot on each objective but since they went to ground and are now considered pinned, they can't move to regroup and still count as holding both objectives at game end.
First time I had ever seen that and had i known about that i would have gotten my Tac Squad out of the Land Raider and charged...forcing the lone grot to come off the far objective and killing the entire unit for a draw at worse and a potential win.

Yeah, but Russ was making saves like crazy that game. He saved 13 strait 5+ invuls on a squad of 7 Nobz while also making 6 of 7 KFF saves on his wagons (Sometimes you just have to walk up with a Thunder Hammer and crack it the old fasioned way).
Re the Grot trick...think of doing that with a Deathwing Army. 2+ for the save, fearless, and self-pinned on the last turn for th win. It was bad enough my other loss was to the TH/SS Deathwing (Belial with TH/SS, 5 units of DW Terminators all with TH/SS and 1 CML, 2 small bike units; Sgt, 2x meltagun, 1 attack bike w/MM) where he had 2 models left on the board, one Terminator holding an objective and another contesting the other (Capture and Control/Spearhead deployment).

BTW, If the owner of the Deathwing Army can PM me. I've worked out a way to deal with Hordes and MSU using this Army and would like to run it by you.

I had a great time playing at Comikaze with my deathwing army. I won twice, lost twice and tied once, not bad considering im still getting used to my DW army. I fought Mike's Logan wing, Kelly's vulcan list, Kevin's Nids, Julian's GK, and John's Orks. All 5 of my games were both fun and challenging, but my favorite was against kelly as it game down to my last 2 cyclone terminators holding out for the win. The event was run smoothly and everyone there was relaxed and ez to get along with. I cant wait to finish my army and hit the CA tourney scene in 2012.

Thanks for the tips, Yak, advice followed!
Glad you had a good 5 games, that is what it's all about. Brian was your round 2 opponent, and a friend of mine. He is a super cool guy, and always fun to play against.

Look out for John on G4! He was interviewed at length, so I bet it makes it onto TV!

Good suggestion though, Usi. We will have them at every big event going forward.

Id like to throw my own personal thanks in as well, although it was a rough tournament for me
with my dice refusing to roll above a 3 the entire weekend. I had walked away with two important things
that weekend new friends and of course new knowledge and insights on how to understand and play my army.
I was quite surprised when I received my "worst general" certificate and the pic with the two unicorn girls. We laughed about it
all the way home.So I tip my hat to the awesome Zero Comp team for running a fun and enjoyable tournament,I loved every minute
of it despite my feet and my dice killing me.I hope to attend again next year and congratulations on the real winners of the tournament
you know who you are.P.S Reece when are the pictures going up from the tournament?

I'd have to say this was a much enjoyable tournament. In between rounds, there were many things to do around you in case you finished early which really brought a fun environment to the tournament. Obviously, the terrain was outstanding. Reece and the crew spent day after day of long labor and monotonous painting to get it ready for the table, I know because I witnessed it first hand. I really enjoy and appreciate all they do to run theses tournaments for all of us and they need to know it does not go unappreciated.

On the flip side, thanks to all the attendees for making the tournament an enjoyable one. You can have top notch tables, great looking armies and perfect dice rolls; However if the people who comes with these things are argumentative, confrontational and for lack of better words, jerks, than all those things don't matter. So I think everyone that attended the event also deserves a round of applause because without us these events would not happen! I hope to see each and every one of you at all other events around, including the Bay Area Open.

Thanks, guys! We are glad you guys enjoyed yourselves! That makes all the hard work worth it.

Check the thread beneath one, titled Comikaze results for the results!

Sorry it took so long, but we had some issues with transferring the files. It still looks funky, but it is at least readable.
