All I can say is...
I think I love this game more than the original DoW series. Relic really hit dead-on with the balance of OTT delicious violence, just the right amount of Grimdark, a bit of humour, and not too much "ULTRAMARINESHERPDERP"

The portrayal of the space marine in this game is phenomenally well done. Voice acting is top notch. You really feel like the presence of a space marine is a blessing from on high. There's one scene close to the beginning where the captain is entering a garrison of the struggling imperial guardsmen (badass that they survived a massive ork incursion, btw), and the voices of the guardsmen are subtle and have a "thank the heavens, a space marine" like they have never seen a space marine before, and it's as if an angel has come to deliver them. Incredibly well done. Relic captured the spirit of the 40K universe absolutely perfectly. I can't wait to pick up my sticks again after finishing this post!

I was playing multi player today and my team was trying to capture an objective, I had unlocked the heavy bolter ( devastator marine) and I knew that I had to lay down covering fire on the objective and keep the chaos marines engaged ( you switch between chaos and marine side) . The heavy bolter was hammering away , the noise was deafening and I could hear enemy marines using chainsaws to battle their way towards me . As they closed in on me I saw my fellow assault marines jet packing over head and coming in with close assault weapons swinging and hacking the enemy to bits.
At that moment It really hit me that this wonderful universe I have been a part of for so long , read so many books and played so many games , this universe had come to life and I was right smack in the middle of it.
I can not think of higher praise to give to relic ( the developers) than that.

The campaign is pretty fun so far. But, I can't play online at all. I log in, and go to find a game and then it just hangs. It will say it found 20 games like it's trying to join one and it just sits there forever. I left it on for 15 minutes at one point and nothing. I restarted my PS3 and got the same thing. Anyone else have trouble connecting?

The game turned out a lot like I expected. Chronic content shortage is a problem and the campaign is way too short.
But I'm pleased. Its shocking how much character this game has. As far as I know, Relic has never made a shooter before, but Space Marine's controls, and just the feel of playing are superb. They obviously put a lot of time into getting this aspect of the game right and it shows and the developers deserve all due credit. I have no complaints at all on this which is pretty rare for someone as absurdly picky as me. I haven't played a game that felt so smooth and right in that intangible way that can't really be put into words in a long time. This game really does an amazing job at making you feel like a Space Marine.
But still, I really wish there was more to do in the game. There's only two game modes and only five MP maps. SP is fun but after one time through I can't say I feel like doing it again. The campaign was too rushed. I never had any time to enjoy anything I was doing before being thrown into the next thing. It doesn't help that for a 'walking tank that doesn't need cover 'even on the easiest difficulty if you don't use cover you're going to die pretty fast. Same in multiplayer and I can't seem to escape this irking question of why I can't hide behind that rock and do some pop and shoot XD.
EDIT: This is a game that really tragically fell short of greatness. I suspect budget is to blame

You assume I haven't? There's only five maps and only two game modes which will get boring very fast. Especially with how OP the plasma rifle is (otherwise I think the balance is very good though Assault Marines tend to dominate certain maps). Compare it to MW3 which will likely have at least 10 maps and four to five game modes if not more. BF3 will have more content too. This game is great. Its a shame players have so little to do. The matchmaker is horrible by the way. No idea why they decided to use that same horrid system they used in DoW, but to make it worse by trying to match more people.
I love the game don't get me wrong. But there really just isn't that much in here. Even with a free horde style DLC (which I will enjoy a great much) this game is so short of content it won't be able to maintain a community for long. I doubt the community will be strong enough to keep it going until that DLC releases.Space Marine is like Transformers: War for Cybertron. An excellent game in nearly every respect that just doesn't have enough in it to keep people playing. EDIT: I thought challenges and unlocking armor would help this, but in about 5 hours of MP I've already unlocked most of the armor.

I'd also point out that on PC, mics are a huge issue. I know I can mute them manually, but why is it so hard to just include a push to talk or a mute all option? I don't want to hear a guys wife apologize for burning the roast (which I have) or listen to some kid cough and wheeze. This same problem happened in DoW and it was annoying there too because their push to talk option didn't even work.
EDIT: It's also annoying only knowing where your team is when they are on your screen. The MP is in desperate need of a minimap.

Eh, the setting doesn't quite do it for me. The feel of the forgeworld its set on isn't right IMO. It just doesn't look or feel like what I imagined a FW would be. It feels more urban than industrial, and is lacking in that certain grimdark quality.
Also, the Orks sound too human...

They don't fix the problem. The push to talk in steam doesn't work (far as I know it never has in any game I've ever played). Even if it did, me using push-to-talk doesn't solve the problem of having to hear everyone else. There's not mute all option either. The only way to do it is to set your receive to 0 which will up your TS if you use it and I do.

I do to, but it's still annoying. As far as console ports go, SM may be the best I've played since KOtoR ported to the PC way back when, but there are still some annoyances that could have been fixed in a matter of minutes.

You've obviously never played gears online. This game and gears play a lot alike as far as multiplayer goes. I prefer this mostly because it doesn't devolve into a lancer/torque bow/sniper/shotty fest but still.

Uh... yes, I have, extensively.
How can a cover based shooter play a lot like a jump in your face with chainaxe shooter?
Oh, so you mean in both multiplayer modes you play in 3rd person and shoot at each other, gotcha.

Because no one in gears except for snipers actually use the cover (a common problem in cover shooters actually).
To Clarify, when I say plays like, I mean that the player behavior, what you do in a game to do well, balance and combat is a lot like Gears. If you are very good at Gears all you need is to accustom yourself with the addition of a deeper melee system and you'll probably see a lot of success.

Getting games via a matchmaking service =/= tons of players. A properly programmed/designed matchmaker will make not function any differently regardless of how many players are online, be it 20 or 20 million. If you can give me an accurate count of average numbers of unique players in the past month, then we're getting somewhere.

derp http://www.bungie.net/stats/reach/online.aspx
508,649 players online in last 24h
928,214 games played last 24h
<shakes fist at air> no one plays anymore!!!!
21720
Post by: LordofHats
Usually in a matchmaker you can tell how many people are playing by whether or not you keep playing the same people over and over. For example, in War for Cybertron about two weeks after release, I played with the same 60 or 70 people in every game.
In Escalation, I held the #1 slot on the leader board. A year ago. When I looked the game back up to screw around three months ago, I was still in the top 5 players. #5 to be specific without playing for nearly a year.

While thats by no means a small number, Reach sold 3.3 million copies in the US alone as of September last year. Add in global sales, and all the sales since then, and you're probably looking at total figures of 5+ million copies (I estimate). That means ~10% of players who purchased the game (globally) still play. 10% means most players have moved on. It doesn't mean that no one plays, just not a lot of people play. And thats assuming total sales WEREN'T in excess of approx. 5 million.

Are you really arguing that "not a lot of people play" when nearly a half million people played it in the past 24 hours? That most people have moved on is different from a community or game dying or no longer being played. 500,000 is very strong and on a weekday at that. I doubt Space Marine will even come close to that number. A year after launch, I'd be shocked to see the number of players over 1,000. Having a half-million user base after a year is superb for a video game.
EDIT: I'd also propose not everyone plays on a daily basis. Examine users over the course of a month (none of us have the resources to actually do this though). I'd be willing to bet that Reach has retained about a 1/3 of the buyers playing a little bit regularly.

5 million.

Well I've been taking it slow. Just arrived at the Chaos invasion. I suspect that the reason that it's so short has to do with time and budget - I mean, they totally scrapped the original version of Space Marine, save more or less for character models, and even those were probably reworked.
Not to mention, Relic has that "Secret Project" that they're working on, which I hope like hell is a Company of Heroes: Vietnam. Or even a modern setting, though I'd like to see then take on Vietnam or Korea.
But more to the point, hopefully they'll expand on Space Marine with a boatload of DLC down the road.

That's only one of the many rumours. Relic hasn't confirmed -anything- on it yet. The only announcement they've made recently is an announcement to announce that the announcement that they were supposed to announce at PAX was going to be delayed due to gearing Space Marine up for launch.
Yea. Mega facepalm by Relic.
They have said that it is -not- a new Homeworld game. Otherwise, they've clumsily skirted around any sort of direct answer.

Space marine is a completely different game too. People, or at least the ones i know, dont just play one game for 3 or 4 months, so the idea of playing both mw3 and sm is not completely rediculous.

Karon wrote:You seriously believe that everyone who dropped $60 on this game,
It's almost as if you believe people will play a game just because they payed for it. Most people in the developed world, have the money to waste on a video game to hold them over till others come out. Space Marines fate ( imo) is going to be the same as that of Transformers: War for Cybertron. People play games to have fun. If the DLC and new maps were coming out in two weeks, I'd be singing a different tune. But their not. A month is a long wait for people who will eventually find other things to do.
40K fanatic or no, will stop playing it once GOW3, BF3, MW3, all vastly different games, comes out?
People don't have infinite time to play every game. And you're wrong on one part. No matter how much people deny it, Space Marine is much like Gears of War. It comes on September 20th. If SM survives that shift with enough people, maybe it'll make it. I just don't think the odds are in SM's favor. EDIT: Vastly different is also exaggerated. Shooters are shooters and those games will almost certainly have more content out of the box for $60 than Space Marine brought to the table. Dolling out your content without offering much in the first place is not the best way to keep people interested. I almost think SM would have been better off coming out after the holidays, with more maps and the co- op already available.
I like the game too, but it doesn't change what I think is the most likely scenario. 5 maps and 2 game modes is the biggest lack of content I've seen in a full price game in awhile. It's almost like you can't like a game a lot and still criticize it around these parts...

WoW has been dying the past year as I understand it, but come on? All the time WoW has been out, whose been there to compete with it? Tabula Rasa? Warhammer Online? The biggest MMO release in years was Rift. MMO's are not good analogies for shooters, especially since no matter how repetitive WoW is, there's hundreds of hours of content in it.
Also, I really don't think its much like gears, I like gears, but I probably won't be running out to buy it; that's reserved for the Halo anniversary edition, lol.

My point was that were wasn't any real competition. Tabula Rasa crashed pretty fast, and Warhammer Online died down about a year after release and neither came close to WoW's success. Guild Wars got did well but GW's is an anomaly in MMORPG's and still never succeeded like wow did. Comparing SM to WoW is a poor comparison. The games are in completely different situations.
16879
Post by: daedalus-templarius
I wasn't directly comparing them, I was just saying some people play the same thing forever, regardless what else is coming out.
I've been playing Reach since it came out, and not really any other shooter (other than the GoW3 beta), till SM released. I hope SM just does well enough to warrant a sequel, because there is so much more they could do with this engine and gameplay.
Sigh, I wish Warhammer Online had of been a decent game, so much good art and lore, such bad gameplay.

But wait! Theres more! Pre-order now, and get this beautiful useless WH40K themed accessory for your Team Fortress 2 charactor, free! With that out of the way, here is what I have to say (repost from a.... well, you can't go there so not a repost as youre concerned) I give this game a 3/10 -it gets boring and repetitive rather quickly [see below] -there are only two game modes [could have had objectives, FFA.... I eagerly await exterminatus co- op mode...] -no point to being chaos or loyalist, loadout is identical, so theres no curveballs [come on, give me some reason to care if im on one team or another beyond the fact that CSM armor looks cooler] -could have added orcs as an Mplayer team [Shootaboy? check, Lootaboy? check, Stormboy? check.... so... why are they missing? because armor doesnt regenerate? it shouldnt either way....] -The game is riding on space marines' and WH40k's awesome factor and nothing else [what is this game really delivering to us? jumppacks? we've had them in halo. Excessive gore when you take a rotating set of teeth to someones face? thats gears of war....... This game introduces nothing new to us] -very few maps with terrible map rotation, played the same map 3 times in 5 games.... [can be solved via servers, which doesn't matter, cause we won't get them, and should have given us more than 5 maps. Additional game modes would have made the 5 less monotonous, but as it stands, its just annoying because there is so much more in the world of 40k to explore than 5 districts of a forgeworld] -customisation doesn't fly very well. You essentially have three pidgeonhole roles. [Should have had a veteran/chosen class as well, that allows for some crossover between roles], and then messing with armor and armor color is irrelevant; I barely ever take stock of my enemies' kit-outs, and the clashing colors are sometimes more annoying as I find myself ignoring enemies and shooting at teammates -give us one set of iconic weapons but not the basics? I want mah missile launcher [Can we please have a destructible environment? I want to frag stuff up if I can't get at my oponent] and flamer [hello sticky flaming goodness] I may reconsidder, but my rating is unlikely to go up past 5/10 come late october, but may fall as low as 1/10.... Now don't everyone get hissey pissey with me about being a THQ, Relic, or GW or whatever else hater. I've evaluated the game, and they have offered us nothing... in fact they've fallen well short on what most everyone else has been satisfying and delivering on.

I disagree.
Its the first real multiplatform video game warhammer has to offer, and you should take what you have right now instead of complaining about the things it doesnt.
Not only that, but Space Marine does introduce alot of new concepts, melee being the first obviously. Very few games incorporate melee like space marine does. Next being obviously the jump packs (which indeed are very different than halos), and so on and so forth.

Thats not a reason to consider it a good game... if anything thats more reason to be critical of it, if it wants to be successful and spawn sequels, it needs to sell well, it can't do that riding on the tail of the existing fanbase alone.

Yeah, very few games incorporate melee like space marine does, except Dynasty Warriors, Devil May Cry, God of War, Dante's Inferno, Bayonetta, etc. etc. etc. The jump pack is cool, but thats hardly enough to build a game on.

Thats not what im talking about. Just because a game has melee doesnt mean its like space marine...
My point was that very few game incorporate a system with both melee and ranged weapons as the primary weapons.
I would love to hear what other games do that in multiplayer.
After that, as i think i said before, what other game actually encourages camping (heavy bolter)?
As a final note, i didnt say it was a good game because its the first one, i said people need to be less critical and stop rating it down because it doesnt have content like multiplayer orks.

Game is great. Played through campaign on easy. Having a tough time with the horde on hard. Mostly, it's due to those dam shoota's. Multiplayer is extremely entertaining. But for an online shooter, it lacks the twitch reaction that I needed. The controls felt clumsy, and melee is annoyingly inaccurate. It seems like your character can only hit in four directions. It is fun to see the environment and architecture of an Imperial world though. When that warlord moved, it gave me goosebumps. Really hoping they put in more DLC. For both single and multiplayer. Campaign definitely felt too short. And the more tougher opponents are a repetitive fight. I had to kite those two chaos champions around the last area five times before they died. I'm looking forward to the co- op. and hopefully they improve some things in the multiplayer. Is it only me that finds it frustrating to be killed by frag grenades in 3 inch thick armor? And as an Astartes no less.

Not even close to the same degree, shooting in those games is a lame afterthought.
You can melee in every direction, but your melee direction is controlled by your movement, so if you are playing with kb/mouse, you are limited to 8 directions since WASD isn't exactly the most flexible for movement.
They're Astartes frag grenades, of course they hurt other Astartes.

daedalus-templarius wrote: Also, lol 3/10, what the hell is a good game in your opinion? well mate, I reserve 10/10 for the fantastic games, which I haven't seen yet. Warcraft 3 was a 8/10, good multiplayer, and a powerful editor that allowed for a hoard of minigames, but a better system needs to be in place to control unsportsmanly behavior and unruly conduct. Battlefield BC 2 is 7/10, good game play, plenty of game types, and I like the way the classes have to work together. Some of the maps are too big, and some of the sorely missing features are finally coming in BF3. The game has developed well over time, and customising your classes makes a substantial difference for how you interact with your team. DOW 2 was an 8/10, but has slipped to a 6/10 because of the misguided need to add more races suffering from serious imbalance issues, but the last stand addition makes for great fun. It would be even better if the custom game side of it was better developed, incorporating a playable version of say, Space Hulk, or some other such thing. Portal / Portal 2 8/10 Scads of fun! the incorporation of a multiplayer element was also good fun, trouble is, there simply are not enough puzzles for multiplayer(got stale real quick), and they could very easilly have offered a map editor for people to create their own challenges Space Marine being a crappy hack-and-slash simulator is kinda boring. You could have done the exact same thing with a zombie game, and I refuse to accept that adding a hack-slash element magically makes up for all the other shortcomings. Compare space marine against anything else, and it just doesn't offer enough for me to stay loyal to this for very long. I'll keep playing it, I'll keep popping back to it, but it's going to have a hard time competing against other games. Anyone remember Ultramarine? A lot of excitement over that one, and most everyone now unanimously agrees it was a terrible movie.....
