Ive never been that into music, I only put it on when Im in the car, or exercising. When Im painting or ironing or some gak, I usually put debates or lectures and factual TV shows on in the background..
But, when people recommend stuff on dakka, I listen to them, just to see if anything great skipped me.
Needless to say, I had never heard anything by Janis Joplin, but after Amy Winehouse died and people started singing her praises, I thought I would listen to some of her live performances on youtube.
Now, I was impressed by her singing, but my word, I have never seen an uglier singer. Well, maybe that sloth faced woman out of "Everyone but the girl" or whatever they were called, I just remember seeing them on TOTP as a lad and thinking "Bloody hell, she looks like she went apple bobbing in a deep fat fryer"

I like a face with character, big noses dont bother me, though big abnormally shaped ones would. She has nice enough eyes and looks very feminine, unlike Katy Perry who has a man chin. As I said, she looked OK before she made it, now she looks like an absolute freak, bloke in drag sums her up perfectly. I don't know what happened but her teeth and nose got all messed up when she got famous, plus she has "ugly" eyes. I just don't see how anyone could find her attractive as she is now.

While I can respect your opinions, I believe that an attractive person with talent will gain more attention than an unattractive individual with the same skills...it's just a simple fact that most humans are drawn to astheticaly pleasing people.

I mean that if it came down to a choice between two guys of roughly equal looks and personality, the guy with musical talent would have the edge, however slight. I'm not talking about a choice between two musical performers operating within two discrete musical idioms. How often does that arise, anyway? Can't be that often.

Yeah Its a well known fact, I read a big article in men's health about it. And when they asked 10,000 women what a mans ideal job is, "artist" beat engineer, doctor, stock broker, you name it. Women think that creative men are impressive, because women are shallow.
I mean, actors, artists and singers are knee deep in clunge. You dont see men going after women just cos they can sing or paint. We have good honest animal attraction. If a woman is dog ugly, then I don't want to shag her. Thus I hypothesise that men are less shallow than women, because we only care about looks primarily. It sounds funny, but I view that as less shallow in a strange way.
On that note, (im good at drawing) whenever I was interested in a bird, I always tried to find an excuse to write them a letter or a card, and fill it with cartoons and drawings and gak, and I swear my record must be about 99%. This might be something to do with the fact that im essence of man, but im pretty sure its also because women are ridiculous and for some reason love it when i draw gak for them.

I agree that artistic men are more attractive, I was just noting that the more shallow and flashy the artistic merit, the more it seemed to have an impact in my experience (which sort of goes with what Matty was saying as well ). And judging on looks isn't shallow. Judging purely based on "the inside" just leads to people cheating on one another.

I see what Matty's getting at...I've known a few artistically talented woman who'd I'd never think about pursuing any sort of "relationship" with due to looks..yet have also known a plethora of attractive women who've hooked up with friends of mine ( who have faces like pit bulls) simply due to the fact they were in bands ...hell , I admit to exploiting that same sort of situation myself when I was actively playing...
It does seem however that many females tend to " overlook" physical appearance if the guy has some sort of "talent"...at least one that gets him noticed on some level.

I'm good at art too, that's what always what I liked about taking art as an elective because it always be full of hot chicks. Either way, I don't really have trouble conversing with the opposite gender (or really most
people for that matter) but getting beyond that stage I do.
