Fireforge Games: 28mm Plastic Teutonic Knights! Feb 14/15th release @ 2011/09/09 22:25:26

Post by: kenshin620

Well if you remember a quite little topic a few months ago, I mentioned a new company that was apparently going to make 28mm plastic crusaders

Well they STILL dont have an official site but they now have a facebook page and the company is called Fireforge Games. I am very excited just by the preview pics alone! I hope the final product is good! These will also make excellent count as bretonnians (if scale doesnt bother you too much I assume)

Very interesting. How many will come in a box, and for how much? Why do you think that the scale will be off for GW games?

It's honestly very hard to tell the detail from the pics. Price and quantity per box will make/break these for me.

Looks promising, but doesn't strike me as a set of historicals.

The big outlandish helmet decorations seem more fantasy-styled.

The inclusion of musician, banner, champion seems to indicate that they're going for the warhammer market.

True about prices, no idea on them nor numbers in the box

Perhaps but apparently the only thing people think of about Teutonic Knights is their silly get ups

For example, Gripping Beasts 28mm Teutonic Knights

Italeri/Zvezda 1/72 Teutonic Knights

Even total war! (blah blah blah I know they're not that historically accurate blah! )

The big outlandish great helms were quite common amongst those who could afford them. You can find descriptions of them as well as examples and pictures of them in the Codex Manesse particularly of the famous Tannhäuser.

I have no idea why you think banners and musicians are fantasy only either.

Very true, forgot to mention that. Really almost all historical sets these days have Banners and Musicians when historically appropriate (especially for european armies since the roman times)

Might finally give me an excuse to get something that counts as rough riders for my Imperial Guard. "Some random feral worlds knight order" works for me, such as the ones from the Dark Angel homeworld pre-heresy.

The models look pretty good to me, from what we can see. 28mm scale with horsies, no doubt somewhat dear though.

Yes but in time, these are honestly lovely. I emailed them just now asking about release and retailer sales and such as I would love too own these and carry them at my webstore!!! Honestly these are far better then the Gripping Beast versions and I forsee me doing a full army of them (especially as I am in the WAB adepticon campaign as the Kingdom of Jerusalem). Whoever made the statement on helments it would behove you I think too look something up before posting statements on historicals if you have no idea about them. That way you don't make yourself look bad honestly.

@OP: Thank you show much for posting these!

looking promising indeed!
Hope that the potential is realised

Liking the look of the 15th century(?) armour with sallet helms. Love that style along with the 11/12th century mail, my favourite types of armour.

I can see a conversion for a Burne-Jones style Arthurian questing knights!

I always wanted to play a medieval historical game with awesome rules and tight miniatures. I dont know what the rules are and they need to seriously revamp some of thier minis. Not all, some are really good. But there is a sparkle there, of what its too early to say.

You want them too revamp there minis even though this is there first release. I am going to say this as I assume you namely play 40k by that statement. In real life wars soldiers don't carry five hundred pounds of gear with pouches covering there bodies. These are spot on historically with amazing perportions which is not easy by any means. Also for historicals seldom do companies come out with their own rules because most gamers use home grown or one of the umpteen billion out there. So if you are waiting on a rules set too release you will probably keep waiting honestly.

Hi,

I want to introduce myself:

I'm Fabio and i'm the owner of Fireforge Games. Thanks to Arod who pointed me to this post (he is a real life friend of mine) i can answer some of the questions raised in this post.

Just heard on facebook it a rough number of 12, but then take that with a facebook sized grain of salt

There are going to be 12 knights for every box with a lot of assembling options. The price is not fixed yet but it is going to be the standard one for the equivalent plastic cavarly like Perry, Warlord etc.
That arm with the sword has been puzzling me too KGatch. Not sure if it is the angle of the photo but it does look odd.

The right arm with the sword is very well proportioned in real life, it is the pic angle that makes it not so. Moreover, consider that the body of that knight is wheeling to its back, much like charging for a sword strike, but the pic is taken from the front and it is flattened.
During next week i'll post more detailed pics of the pre-production 3up resin copies we have right now from different angles.

I like the horses quite a bit. I hope they will fit in well with my old style Bretonnians. The models seem pretty dynamic for mounted figs.

They'll fit very very well with your old style bretonnians......they were some of the miniatures we took as reference when taking the decision about scale size in pre sculpting meeting

I always wanted to play a medieval historical game with awesome rules and tight miniatures

Give time.....we are aiming not only at producing miniatures but at creating a "game system". It's our dream since we are very passioned wargamers here and we are trying to make it true.
If you pay attention to our Facebook Wall, you'll probably be able to notice that a certain ex GW game designer posted on it and we had some fun with him.......

Judging by their art, they will in time. Although it doesnt look like they're gonna do any non Western European stuff any time soon

Not all the artworks there are going to be box covers for future covers. Most of the art there was taken/commissioned for future use too like for a book...
Anyway, we want to "complete" a range/faction before advancing to the next project. Therefore, you'll not see non Western European before we have finished our crusaders line.
After our first release "Teutonic Knights" (it should be around Christmas), we'll have at least 4 more plastic releases during the first two quarters of 2012.

It's very exciting for us here at Fireforge being able to talk about it in pubblic now, although, at the same time we cannot say everything going on here.
It's REALLY a dream becoming true for us and trust me that we want to play with our Teutonic Knights on the battlefield as soon as possible!!!

Best Regards,
Fabio

I'm looking forward to seeing the final product - I don't think I'm the only one who as a kid had an affinity for teutonic/arthurian knights (I still fondly remember the epic colouring book I had & numerous castle trips), and it's great to see them in 28mm plastic. The artwork is fantastic and it's great to see another company entering the fold - I wish all at Fireforge the best of luck over the next few months. Bring on the Knights on foot!

These are looking great! Combined with some Perry miniatures foot infantry (for archers, halbadiers and the like) and some armoured foot knights (representing Great Swords) and I think that could be a very cheap and effective historical-version style Empire army!

Hmm crusader/early knights though fit in with brets more. Although Perry is already making late medieval knights anyways

same as everyone else, cost and quantity will be the most important for me... though I have no plans of making these guys into brets but just having them if they are of good quality (still a sucker for AOE II stuff and crusades related models). Regarding the helmets, I believe it was the "Ritterbrüder " that wore the big fancy ones when they were able to afford such embellishments to their armor.

Yes, I agree in theme, but rules-wise Brets have no heavy infantry option (to let you use men-at-arms models). Also, you can use crossbows/aquibusiers as handgunners in an Empire army directly.

If by "good" you mean "refusing to advance his style past what was acceptable before some of the posters on Dakka was born", then I guess I can understand it.

His Starship Troopers stuff outside of the bugs was atrocious.

A bit late but found this post from the 19th on their face book

About their size what we are trying to achieve is an halfway scale between classic historical Perry size and "heroic" GW. In this way, we are trying to make them reasonably compatible with both. We cannot say, for sure, that we were able to do that until the moulds are complete but from our calculations on the 3up master sculptures, it should be the case. They are not going to havethe "exagerated/heroic" features of GW ones since they must be compatible with historical too but they should fit very well.
Think about the old GW Bretonnian knights, they were some of the miniatures we took as reference in pre-sculpting meetings.

You do realize 28mm means nothing without the right words?

Though they have said the size so far seems to be a compromise between Perry and GW sizes

Latecomer to the discussion, but the figs thus far look great, and having Naismith on as sculpter is definitely a step in the right direction.

Not anymore. Sole to eye, most of the currently releases of GW figs are in the 30-32mm range. May not seem like a huge difference, but placed next to standard less-heroic 28mm figs, GW figs are massive.

That said, if they are using some older GW bretonians as scale refference, it's likely that this will be a unit that would scale fine on the board with current GW as long as you don't try to mix GW figs into the same unit. Will likely scale well with Perry too, though in both cases, how well they will look stylistically will have to wait until we see the final figs.

I've got my eye on this company- I like the sculpts, and really like the style- they're full of movement and energy. That fact that they plan on completing each range sounds great to my ears, as well, as I'm envisioning an entire army with the same scale and style, rather than something cobbled together from different sources. I also like the idea of them being priced like Perry's plastics. I'll definitely be buying a few boxes of these knights, and I hope the entire Teutonic range is as awesome- I also hope they all comes out soon!

And I for one am glad that they do. I don't like GWs current Bret Knights. My Bret army is comprised of all 5th edition knights, grail knights, questing knights, and the metal MAAs. So this company producing models that scale somewhat with that style and size is perfect for me.

I also have lots of Perry crusaders for my historicals army, and again, this will fit right in size wise. Of course, these are a bit later than my first crusade force, but the plastis will be very customizeable.

GWs cav, particularly the Brets, are oversized and clunky looking in general.

This will be at the top of my to buy list! They look awesome. I have always wanted to create a Bretonnian army based on the crusades. Now that it is a lot more achievable I may start WHFB army. Or I will buy this as a one off purchase. Either way I want some of these!

FireForge has world wide shipping for £1. Makes up for the lack of any US distributor.

While I have this kit on pre-order, I'm more excited by the infantry kits to follow. I need tons of troops to build out Hail Caesar armies.

Maybe some Poles and Lithuanians too even?

Hmm, FF says they're shipping on the 14th

The logistic nightmare of organizing several shippings for product frames, printed boxes, miniature bases etc. is settled and solved. Considering printing, moulding, shipping times of loose frames as well as packaging times for shippings to retailers and customers worldwide, we’ll be able to start sending our first boxes from 14th February. DEUS VULT!

Also, dem sprues!

Still waiting for mine. I pre-ordered back in December & they charged my account on 2-7-12. I think they have a distribution agreement with Alliance in the US - not sure if they will ship direct or if I need to wait for an extra stop over.

Your order shipped with all USA orders on 15th February and it takes 8-10 working days for USA. We charged most accounts one week before shipping but it was not intentional. The shipment from the factory of our very first frames should have arrived at our warehouse during the first week of February but they arrived late (14th February) for the VERY BAD snowy weather that hit Europe last weeks. We packaged and tried to ship the first boxes as fast as we could. Distributors in UK (our frames are manufactored there) were the very first ones to have them, even before us! for this exceptional weather situation.

A little patience for these very first shipments, we didn't have nothing in stock.....this run of production is the starting stock!
You'll be very satisfied when you'll receive your box.

Cheers,
Von Fabian

@Von Fabian: I'm a patient guy. Warlord charged me in January for the Phalangites pre-order which were delivered 30 days later in February. I actually take the account charge as a positive sign - that the product has moved from WIP to 'for sale'.

My Knights arrived yesterday. The kit is well sculpted and well cast with very few mold lines. The body and weapons of the knight are slim/trim and a good match for most other historical plastic kits. What makes this kit stand out is the volume occupied by the assembled model - with capes and arms and barding flying off the figure - the completed model appears to be much bigger than it actually is.

Pro/con
The rider/horse join is the best I've ever seen in a cavalry kit. There is an obvious line where the two halfs of the horse come together - those with modeling OCD will want to use a touch of putty. I wish the horse head was not a flat join to the body - once again, some modelers will want to clean up that joint. While working with the hand weapons included on the frame (sword/axe/mace/flail) I was immediately struck by the desire for a dismounted knights kit using these weapons.
