Hi Everyone,

I've been working on this project for a bit and thought it might be worth putting it out on the forums to get some feedback and advice.

Background

I've been collecting Genestealers since the late 90s since picking up the 2nd edition of Space Hulk for a fiver - mainly just for the Terminators.
Unfortunately the genestealers didn't get much love and were just given a bad paint job and shoved in the box until the release of the Citadel Journal Genestealer codex in 2001 when I added a Magus, Patriarch and some very badly converted hybrids. Not much effort was put into this incarnation of the Cult and it played just as Imperial Guard with a few genestealer units dotted in. This force would pop out every now and again for a couple of games before being packed away.
About a year ago, I decided to put a some more effort into the cult as my painting had improved and wanted to venture out into using greenstuff and plasticard.

Whilst I wouldn't say I'm a brilliant painter, I'm not the worst so I'm open to critisicm and feedback as to how to improve.

Direction

This force is predominantly to be used for painting rather than playing so I'm not going to adhere strictly to force organisation charts though the previous army lists (Rogue Trader, 2nd Edition and Citadel Journal) will be used for things like unit size and options.

The 'background' for the army is more of a rebel uprising influenced by genestealers with the cult leading over it, so whilst the cult will have a strong presence, I won't be having things like purple vehicles - this is also so it can use some of my Imperial Guard as the more militaristic aspects of the force.

Also, the 2nd edition codex (and Space Hulk rules) allowed for usage of things such as Tarantulas, Rapiers and Conversion Beamers. Whilst there are arguments that a 'rebel uprising' wouldn't be able to get their hands on rare weaponry like this, I was going to use the argument that they were discovered aboard an infested Space Hulk and brought to the planet or that once the cult managed to get a foothold on the planet they managed to gain access to the special armoury of weapons too precious or specialist to be used as dictated by the Imperial military.

Anyway, enough about the army, time for some pictures:

The Patriarch

The Magus

Hybrid Neophytes

Brood Brother Initiates

Hope you like the stuff I've done, I've got more to come if you guys are interested.

I'm currently in the process of making an Imperial Guard landspeeder as 2nd edition Genestealer cults could have them (but not 2nd edition Imperial Guard...)

For more pictures of the current models as well as information on how I did some of the conversions, please check out my blog : http://cultoftheskyfather.blogspot.com/

Cool, thanks for the feedback

Here's some more pictures as promised:

Relic / Icon Bearers

Some figures painted before working on the project proper.

Hybrid Acolytes

This guy's back was an absolute pain to paint (curse those really thin ridges).

And finally, a group shot of the Brood Brothers (with a couple of extra figures)

Hope you like them.

Thanks guys!

Field Marshal Wiley wrote:...throw in a couple imperial guard deserters...

The Brood Brothers I've posted are meant to be the 'militia' that have risen up and represent the weaker armed and armoured fighters. The Imperial Guard 'deserters' will be fielded as actual squads (with Sergeants but lacking any higher up command) to represent corrupted / turned military / PDF squads.

However, a mixed unit of guard deserters isn't too bad an idea...

Ok so here's my first W.I.P. - the Imperial Guard (Cult) Land Speeder.

As the vehicle would have belonged to the military, it is going to look more Imperial than Cult though I also wanted to make it look more Imperial Guard than Space Marine.

The basis is the current Space Marine land speeder with some tank accessories added to try and make it less Space Marine but still keeping its original shape. I'm also using the 2nd edition rules for the armoury of it (to again differentiate it from the Space Marine one).

So to begin with are the finished crew which are basically Sentinel crew with different heads and the heavy weapon arms (that came in the Basilisk kit).

The Gunner

The Driver

The Weapons

The Plasma Cannon with be mounted on the underside and is made from an old vehicle Heavy Plasma Gun that I got with some Hybrids (don't know where it came from originally though) added to the bracket from a Searchlight.

The Multilaser is a Sentinel multilaser that has been cut down a little and the ammo box from a Heavy Bolter added to the side.

and here's a final W.I.P. shot of the rest of the land speeder:

Changes include adding some extra ariels, adding baggage and a Sentinel sheild adding to the front.

Hopefully I should have it finished reasonably soon.

Ok so progress hasn't been very rapid on my land speeder (I got distracted by video games among other things).

However, I went home a few weeks ago and managed to find time to paint a couple of hybrids:

Hybrid Acolyte Leader

I'm starting to venture more into edge hilighting, hopefully the effect on the power sword came across ok.

Magus

This is the Magus that came with the Throned Patriarch which I also have. Unfortunately I don't have its throne - does anyone have any good suggestions for replacements?

And finally, here's some progress shots from the land speeder. Its chassis is constructed and the figure is undercoated, I should get onto the main paint job very soon.

Not sure how visible it is in this last picture but the underside needed a partial re-construction using some tank bits and plasticard.

Hopefully my next update won't be as far apart as this one.

So I've just finished my (Liberated) Imperial Guard Landspeeder (the Brood Brothers found it locked up in the Imperial Guard Armoury when they broke in).

Overall it was a pretty standard and simple conversion with most of the work being constructing the cockpit and making it look less like I'd just put Sentinel Crew inside a Marine landspeeder.

Changes to the Marine landspeeder are:

- New Crew (make from Sentinel Torsos, Tank Crew Heads and Heavy Weapon Team or Sentinel Crew arms).
- Mounted Multilaser (made from a Sentinel Multilaser and Heavy Bolter Ammo box).
- Undermounted Plasma Cannon (made from an old Heavy Plasma Gun and Searchlight - I assume the Heavy Plasma Gun was from an old Dreadnaught but I can't be certain).
- Modifying the shape to look less sleak and streamlined (adding bits from Cadian, Tank Crew and other misc sprues and taking off some parts such as the rear fin).
- Reconstructing part of the underside (caused by having to remove some of the glue the previous owner covered the model in).

Anyway, enough chatter, here's the pictures, hope you like it.

I'm toying with the idea of adding a searchlight to the back, left side of the speeder as the entire right side seems a little bare in comparison to the right.

Also, for my next cult project, I'm unsure whether to paint up some more hybrids (plastic or metal) or to work on some cult bikers (including hybrid in sidecar).

Anyways, what do you guys think?

Wow... Thats some excellent work. Good to see some old stuff looking good...

How long did it take you all together?

I would like to see the cult bikers next... Would be very interesting (espec hybrid in side car).

Keep up the good work and keep us updated with new pics.

Thanks!

The speeder didn't take too much time to do. Soaked it overnight in Dettol, about a day or so to assemble and paint the cockpit, another day fully assembling everything and waiting for the greenstuff to dry then another day to paint and highlight the rest. It was a pretty simple paint job just took time cos there was so much to paint.

The cult bikers will be made alongside my Cadian Roughriders (Cadians on Bikes). I'm using Space Marine Scout bikes for the bikes, though as I've just bought the frames (no handle bars, wheels etc) I'll be spending quite a bit of time planning them out and scratch building the other bits. I also need to get round to getting some more Catachans to convert the crew, the jackets and bare arms I think will make a good 'biker' look.

For the hybrid sidecar I'm either going to use a converted attack bike sidecar or modify an old Imperial Cuard sentinel's cockpit (the 2nd edition Cadian one). Not sure how I should make the Hybrid occupant - cut up a metal one, use a plastic one or scratch build it. The plastic one would be easier but is the wrong generation of hybrid....

Sorry for the delays in posting, I've been kept busy with some Imperials.

I've started work on my Hybrid sidecar by starting the Hybrid passenger and thought I'd post the (very) WIP shots of what I've done so far and where I plan to go with it.

Instead of butchering an existing Hybrid, I've decided to build my own using plastics, greensfuff and milliput (I've rarely used these for proper sculpting so it'll be a learning exercise).

I've only made a very basic start on the Hybrid's torso (the greenstuff is drying as we speak) but here it is:

(I've cleaned the back up a little since that picture).

As you can see I've made a start on the ribbing that exists on all of the metal hybrids buy filing down the torso and building it up with greenstuff.

The armour plates will be made using milliput with more flexible / organic bits being made from greenstuff. Arms will be a mixture of Catachan and hybrid.

I'm working on a Guard Heavy Weapon squad at the moment but hopefully I'll be able to fit time in between to work on this project.

Any feedback (including sculpting tips) would be much appreciated.

I've managed a little more work on the Hybrid, its coming along though I don't think it will be up to an amazing standard (fingers crossed it'll at least be good enough to put on the table, I'll have to paint it well).

Firstly, here's the model I'm using as a reference.

Here's some shots of the head, using greenstuff to make it look more like a Genestealer (making it more bulbus and a ridge to the nose).

And here's the torso. Its looking a little messy at the moment, hopefully I'll be able to clean it up a bit when its finished.

I'm quite impressed with it for a first attempt.

Comments and critisicm would be much appreciated (and some hints on sculpting wouldn't be bad either ).

So rather than being a bit on the side, this Hybrid has become my main project.

I think the majority of the sculpting work has been completed, though there'll be touch up and extra details to add. Most of the cleanup work will be done once undercoated black as I'll be able to tell where the work needs to be done easier.

The arms will be a mix of Catachan and the plastic single Hybrid arm - it'll only be a two armed Hybrid.

So here's the shots of the Hybrid as it is now.

The backpack needs touching up, as does the sides - though hopefully the arms will cover up the messier bits.

Always love Genestealer Cult. I've thought about reviving mine, and I picked up a Brood Lord to replace the older Patriarch model that I never liked. I figure with a little conversion to make him a bit more hunched and threatening, it will make a great Patriarch. As it is, the Brood Lord's stance is way, way too "Come at me Bro" in the "Punch Me" stance. Great work on the models. Your BBs have a lot of character.

Personally I think the Space Hulk Broodlord is one of the best looking Genestealer models (along with some others in Space Hulk). I did look into getting one of the regular Tyranid Broodlords but was outbid on eBay and also, why would I need 4 'Patriarch' models (as I already own the old running one, the old throned one and the space hulk one).

Well, I finally got round to painting and finishing my Hybrid (would've got them done a little quicker but I had to put my paints away and pick up Christmas tree).

Torso Shots:

With Weapons:

The bolt pistol is from an old 2nd edition Ork and the sword is from the Catachan sprue with some wire and greenstuff work on it.

I decided to go for two different arms to make him look a little less 'perfect' and more of a freak.

Still not sure how I'll make the sidecar, the old Sentinel has the right look to it but it might be a little too big.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with my first major foray into sculpting.

Post by: Roy Langa

Ok so time for an update.

I'm still working on the Cult but have been a little distracted since Christmas (Skyrim and Phoenix Wright are who I blame).

I've only recently found time to work on the Cult and my projects aren't in full swing yet but I thought I'd post what I'm up to in case people are interested / could help out.

My first project was to make a bike and sidecar for the Hybrid I sculpted. I bought a Space Marine scout bike frame and trimmed down the mud guards (or whatever the things that sit above the wheels are called) and removed some of the Space Marine motifs to make it look less bulky and a little more 'civilian' (or at least less Space Marine like). Unfortunately, the project hit a bit of a wall when I realised I couldn't make wheels for the bike. Does anyone know a good supplier of wheels that will work with the Space Marine Scout bike that I can get in bulk (or at least better than £1 a wheel + postage)?

I then decided to make a start on this guy:

Anyone who's tried to buy the throned Patriarch on eBay has seen how much they can go for. I was fortunate enough to find this one at a decent price but he was without a throne.

I'd been planning on making a throne for the Patriarch since I got it but wasn't sure how to go about making one. I wasn't too hot on the one that the Patriarch was supposed to come with and was having difficulty finding a suitable replacement. After a while though, I found this image on Google which inspired me with a design for the throne:

The curved design and organic feel to it made me think of making a 'pod' like throne based upon the old, curved Genestealer backs.

At the moment I've only managed the frame to the throne:

The next stop will be building it up out of milliput and sanding it down to a smooth, egg like shape.

Thats if nothing else distracts me...

(Sorry for the massive photos, not sure what's causing that).

Roy Langa's Painting Blog (Formerly Cult of The Sky Father - A Genestealer Blog) @ 2012/04/14 15:02:51

Post by: Roy Langa

So I've done some more work on the throne, mainly just getting its basic shape constructed. Here's some shots I took from my phone to give an idea of how it is looking so far:

I'm using the super fine Miliput to construct it and despite mixing it quite well (at least as well as I would with greenstuff) and leaving it to harden for over a day, sometimes it doesn't harden properly - enough to be able to be squashed and indented with fingers. Has anyone else used this and could explain where I'm going wrong with it as it means I cannot smooth it down and get the finish I'd quite like?

Also, I haven't really been working on my throne much as I decided to start building this over the Easter weekend:

There's going to be 3 levels of ruined floors, I've just not assembled them whilst I'm painting it.

I think I might start putting a few more pieces of scenery on here if people are interested.

(Again sorry for the images, these were taken from my phone and I forgot to scale them).

Some nice stuff here. The hybrid sculpt was very impressive for a first attempt - kudos for that.

Liking the egg-throne so far.

Think with the milliput it's just a question of mixing it - isn't the superfine comprised of 2 white components, making it really hard to tell when it's fully mixed?

No idea on who has the cheapest wheels, but if you fancy scratch-building some:

Thanks for the link to the wheels, I've actually ordered these wheels from Ramshackle games http://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25_27&products_id=48 but I'm not sure if they're the correct size - if not I'll give that tutorial a go (and use the Ramshackle ones for scenery).

Yeah both parts of the superfine are white and I thought I had mixed them well but obviously not well enough.

And in case anyone is interested, I'm in the final stages of painting my ruin so pictures for that might surface soon.

I received a nice batch of Cult related gifts through the mail today.

The ship which the Patriarch landed in:

This chap (after a repaint and some conversion work) will make a nice hybrid:

And here are the wheels I ordered for my bikes:

They're roughly the same size as the Marine bike wheels but only one sided so I'm going to have to apply some greenstuff work to it to make them look right on my bikes.

I also received some 'safety floor' plasticard that looks a bit like this:

Took me ages to find some of this stuff as its quite hard to find out what its actually called (I found it here: http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/slaters-single-tread-plate-in-grey-scale-1-50.html).

I also finished off my ruin:

It was pretty easy to make and used stuff I had about my house (the only things I needed to buy were filler and some fresh paint.

Hope you like it.

So with my delivery of wheels in the mail, I decided to put the throne on the back burner and make a start on my bike and sidecar for my Hybrid (the one I sculpted).

Since I wanted to make it more civilian and less like Imperial Guard on Space Marine bikes, I trimmed off parts of the bike and removed the Space Marine symbols. Since I was also too cheap to buy the Scout Bike wheels (they're £1 + postage for a wheel on eBay) I used the resin wheels which were unfortunately too big and wide.

The sidecar will be made from a 2nd edition Imperial Guard Sentinel (currently soaking in Dettol) and the Wheel from an attack bike.

The driver is at the moment just made from some Catachan pieces. I'll need to do some greenstuff work on him too to make him look a bit more like a biker.

Its looking very rough at the moment, Once the greenstuff has hardened, I'll give it all a coat of black paint so I can see where the majority of the work is needed.

Unfortunately though the wheels that I bought I don't think are fit for use for the rest of the bikers (I think I can just about deal with it for this as its a one off piece) so I'm going to have to search eBay for a deal on wheels...

Thanks for the link! I've sent off an email to them enquiring whether they know if their wheels fit Scout bikes and are double sided. If they are I think I'll be ordering them for the rest of the squad.

I've also ordered a load of the sentinel searchlights to go on my bikes for their head lamps and need to plan out some work regarding the handlebars so major work on the sidecar is going to come to a pause for now.

Since the last update though I've improved the rider a little to make him fit the bike better (still need to do the major sculpting work on him though). I've also make the bike's speedometer out of the side of the Cadian comm-link and a cocktail stick and attached the old sentinel cockpit as the sidecar, though I'm a little concerned that it might sit a little too wide (also, all that metal might mean its thin fixture breaks pretty easily).

Close up of the handlebars so far:

Mock up of the rest of the bike (its sitting on a wheel whilst the greenstuff cures):

They are, and they do It's the 19mm wheels you want for bikes

Comparison shot:

Is it just GS for the join between sidecar and bike or have you pinned it?

I've ordered myself 10 of those wheels to use on the rest of the bikes.

The sidecar is just held with greenstuff and super glue and seems to be strong enough. I think if its not I'll base it too as I'm not sure if I have the tools to pin it

I got my first delivery of Searchlights yesterday and managed to find some time both last night and this morning to get a little work done. Unfortunately I didn't find time to take any good photos so phone camera will have to suffice:

Sorry for the size, I didn't have time to scale them.

I've finished the handlebars (bar any cleanup work), added a headlight and tidied up the wheel on the sidecar. Something not shown on the picture was that I've started work on turning one of my spare wheels into stowage (which I will add along with some other stuff to make the bike look less efficient).

I think the bike part of the bike and sidecar is pretty much complete with the sidecar just needing the aforementioned stowage and tidying up the underside a little. I also need to do some work regarding the interior of the sidecar to make the passenger fit better. Ideas include sculpting robes or a blanket for the hybrid or adding in a padded interior.

I also need to finish the rider and adjust the hybrid to fit in the sidecar better (as his arms don't fit with the sides).

Thanks! Despite how long I've had some of the figures, it was only after seeing other people's work in the past couple of years that spured me on to work on the Cult - I loved the backstory for the Cult in 2nd edition but first played with the 3rd edition Journal Rules (which are now sadly underpowered and overpriced). It would be nice if GW saw some of the amazing work the other guys on here and other forums have done and bring back their rules.

Anyway, enough waffle and onto the main feature.

I've finished the main construction work on the bike and sidecar (bar touching up features etc) and am pretty close to start painting work on it.

I've had to separate the sidecar from the body of the bike so things might look a little crooked in these pictures.

As you can see in this image, the Hybrid's arms have been reattached, this was done as I cut down the sides of the sidecar.

I decided to use one of the resin wheels here (well one and a half plus some greenstuff work) to line it up with the rest of the wheels.

Originally I wanted to have this spare wheel attached with some straps but I couldn't make them look good so instead I opted to use a metal bracket created out of some stiff wire.

And here's the trimmed down cockpit with some greenstuff padding.

Next stop is painting it all black (apart from the Hybrid) to find any imperfections with the greenstuff. The rider will also need to be done at a later date.

Thanks! I'm currently about a third of the way through painting it now, doing it Shadow Grey to match the Landspeeder and Imperial Guard that they will be fighting with.

I've also done a little more on the rider, mainly filing his beefy arms down so I can put some sleeves on him and adding his hands.

In other news, my wheels arrived in the mail for the rest of the cult bikers / Imperial Guard Rough Riders that I am working on. However, that is another post for another time...

Thought its time for an update since I've just finished painting my sidecar (not the bike, just the sidecar). The rider is almost complete too, just needing his sleeves and some detail work finishing.

I've also started painting a Space Marine Captain (Red) to break up the amount of Shadow Grey I've been painting recently so the bike might take a little longer to appear.

And here's the shots:

Hope you like it so far...

Looking proper good there. I think its going to work out just fine. Trying to get some hybrids together myself but the bloody things are pricey! I might have to make some greenstuff ones like you.

Yeah, the metal ones are about £8-£9 a pop and that's not including delivery. If you're eBaying, try to look for a seller with multiple sales so you can combine postage. The plastic ones are a little cheaper but a bit more basic (and sharklike).

One alternative I did try was cutting up the old genestealers and mixing them with some Catachan parts, these would look a little more like the plastic ones.

In other news, I've finished the greenstuff work on my rider and just need to wait for it to cure (the blue / yellow mix was more on the yellow side so it might take a while).

I've just finished the driver for the sidecar and thought I'd post it up for show as there weren't any WIP shots of it. This one is basically just a Catachan with a good amount of greenstuff work on it - best of all, the legs needed no work doing to them as they fit the bike perfectly.

Here's the rider:

and here's the rider on the WIP bike:

It was also my first time using the new Citadel paints as I had to get rid of my 15 year old Bronzed Flesh :(.

I've also realised I've got a ton of Imperial Guard and other Genestealer bits to paint so the more complex stuff like the Patriarch's throne and the other bikers might take a while to materialise.

The biker came out very nicely!

I'm really enjoying seeing an active Cult being built. I used to play one in 2nd Ed and by far it was my most competitive list. I do not know the reason behind GW not updating Cult rules in later editions, but I'm sure it's lame.

Is it that GW gets rid of all its cool and unusual armies - or is it that by getting rid of these armies GW has made them cool and unusual? Either way they are cool.

Do you think they would let you play with 2nd edition rules and lists in a GW shop? Or is that too much to ask.

I'm clinging onto the hope that since they're starting to revisit some Rogue Trader era stuff (like the Jokaero) they might release a Cult WD or Forgeworld list.

I don't play in the shops but can use the 3rd edition 'semi-official' rules from the Citadel Journal (by Tim Huckleberry), though they are underpowered and over priced.

The only other option is proxying a force from other lists, the Patriarch and Genestealers from the Tyranid codex, the humans from the Imperial Guard codex etc. Its mainly just the hybrids (and bikers) that don't have equivalent models that I know of.

Well its took me long enough but I've finally finished my bike and sidecar for my hybrid and here's the results, all 30 or so points:

Not sure if you can see but I've attempted some lighting effects on the bike's headlight and some scorching on the exhaust.

Hopefully its worth the effort I put into it.

In other news I've also managed to get a proper throne for my Patriarch so I may get round to working on that sometime soon.

It is the bomb. BOOM. A fine piece of conversion/scratch building.

I'm nit picking now but surely the headlight should be white/yellow? Not that there is any reason why it shouldn't be blue but yellow is more traditional for headlights.

Whilst I get back into the swing of painting (and to take a break from doing Guardsmen) I'll show what I'm currently working on.

Please excuse the pictures, I had to use my phone.

Firstly is a great model I've liked since it was released. Just gonna paint it up and hope I do a good job.

Next up is a really old Necromunda model. The old arms it came in were really thin and didn't look right.

I've built his arms up from some Cadian arms that I've trimmed down a little. The autogun is just the lasgun filed down with a bolter feed attached. I'm still doing some greenstuff on the arms to make them fit in better.

Thats about it really, nothing exciting but shows what I've got coming up.

The Cadian arms worked quite well once shaved down and had the greenstuff applied.

I've finished the Arch Confessor's body and just need to finish his mace. I haven't really done anything on the Scavvy.

I'm pretty impressed with the results (though not as good as the GW one but I don't have the steadiness or the patience to do all the writings and spirals).

I also started on this little substation but ran out of glue to apply the gravel etc.

The bike and sidecar turned out great, nice job there.

Always liked that archdeacon(?) model, and love the old scavvies. You took of the skinny human arms? I've always thought they were some of the best arms GW ever did, I was devastated when the bits service discontinued them. Back when they still had a bits service. Fethers.

The arm it came with was really thin, smaller than the Cadian and the old Ork arms - the hand flamer it was holding was tiny so I felt it was far too small. If I fish it out I might post a picture of it.

In other news, I finished the substation I was working on, very basic paint job (I just wanted it as a quick and easy piece of terrain). Unfortunately the grey I used was the one I bought by mistake and is too light . Hopefully it won't stick out on the table.

Very fun stuff. I am loving your Genestealer cult. One recommendation on the terrain. Use MDF board instead for the base. It does not warp as much and the edges are cleaner. All you head to cut it is an electric jigsaw to cut it.

I use A cheap Black and Decker and it does the job in a flash. Takes me 10-30 seconds to cut a good base.

I wish I had space to use power tools! One of the perils of living in a flat.

Going forward though, I might start looking into using foamcore as it shouldn't warp as much and is cutable with a knife. Its also lighter than wood so easier for me to transport (I play most of my games at my work's office).

Finished the Confessor's mace, hardly the most taxing of pieces. Gonna base him once I've decided how I'll base my Cult (I'm thinking urban but topped with snow so it fits alongside my urban Guard and Snow Marines).

I'm going to go out on a limb and say its the best piece I've painted, and it didn't even take me that long to do!

Whilst I was working on a couple of other things, I found an old project I'd started roughly 10 years ago. Back in the days of 3rd edition, the Citadel Journal Cult rules included a few special characters along with a list of parts that were used to create them (this was back in the days of GW's brilliant bits service). So I ordered an Empire Light Wizard (I think), cut off his staff, sword and beard. I cobbled together a fancy looking bolt pistol but unfortunately never found a suitable top for his staff so he just sat in my bits box. I tried to make a staff for him but could never get anything to look right - until I had a wave of inspiration.

I cut off a genestealer head and claw and fiddled about with it to make an ornate decoration of the claw holding the head, attached it to a cocktail stick and stuck it on.

Now it looks a little rough at the moment but perhaps once a lick of paint is applied, I might get myself another magus or relic bearer?

Watch this space.

Nice terrain, though I will echo Rabid Ferret's advice and offer a couple solutions that you may find helpful.

This is what all terrain pices should be based on:

You can get MDF board at most DIY stores (I looked this one up as a point of reference- http://www.wickes.co.uk/mdf-board-3x606x1220mm/invt/164517/). You'll likel be able to have them cust it into smaller chunks for you so you're not carrying a 4X4' sheet of board home w/ you.

Once you have it home, try any of these ideas. I've done them all, and they all worked for me.

Draw out your design w/ a permanent marker as it is easier than pencil to see.

Try using a sabre saw:

or a coping saw:

and also get a rasp file:

Use the saw to cut out your design and use the rasp file on the edges to smooth / taper it out. That's it.

I know using cardboard is easier and free, but trust me you'll be so much happier w/ a solid base and you'll likely go back and re-base your previous projects. I used to work in cardboard exclusively for years. I'm way happier now.

If you are absolutely set on still using cardboard, at very least use some putty / etc to fill in /smooth out the edges of your base. Cut cardboard looks like cut cardboard, no getting around that unless you cover it up.

The Confessor looks excellent! I'm still loving the fact you are using more 'classic' colors for your Cult.

Post by: Roy Langa

I've invested in a large sheet of foam core to try that out as a friend of mine used it before and its quite simple to work with.

I probably will move on to wood at some point however I'm hesitant to use anything like a saw as I don't have a yard or garage to work in (I do all work on my kitchen table in a rented apartment).

As for colours - they have to be the classic colours! They're a Genestealer Cult, not a Tyranid Cult!

Well I finished my infantry squad which meant I could get round to finishing my Scavvy. I also decided to base this one:

I think that he fits the criteria of downtrodden citizen quite well (he has bags for shoes and rope for a belt!)

Unfortunatelly it might be a while before I post other Cult updates. I've still got plenty of guard to do and currently have no Cult projects on the go. Who knows though, all it may take is a watch of the Aliens movie or something and I might get back into it.

Also, when I went down to Games Day the other week, I asked Matt Ward if Genestealer Cults would be making an appearance any time soon and he said I'd be in for a long wait .

Ok so I've been painting a little too much rank and file guardsmen for my liking and the end doesn't look to be in sight soon. As this is supposed to be a Genestealer blog and I don't have many of the four armed monstrosities on here, its time to rectify that.

First off, here's the guys I'm repainting, a classic example of my painting from 10 years ago.

Progress in doing these will probably be slow as I still need to get through those guardsmen but I'm aiming on getting a batch of about five or so done.

Also, it looks like GW have taken down the painting guide that I was using. Scouring the net, I found this link that some guy posted:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/70588171/Space-Hulk-Stage-By-Stage

I took my own screengrabs to use as reference and here they are if anyone was also looking for this guide:

Also, in unrelated news, XCom is a good game.

So as usual I got distracted by stuff and never got round to doing what I had planned.

I managed to strip all my genestealers of their terrible 13 year old paintjob but that's about as far as I got with them. Most my paints got packed away over Christmas and I only cracked them out about a month or so ago and its mainly been Imperial Guard since then.

I have however managed a couple of Cult and scenery pieces and will post pictures once my camera is charged up.

I also however discovered (via the Genestealer Cult Yahoo! group) that there's a campaign on the horizon that will involve a Genestealer Cult. The campaign pack can be found here:

http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m3050151a_Praedis_Zeta_rules_pack_V.1.pdf

Also, to add to my distractions, I've decided to start playing the Judge Dredd miniature game so I might start posting a few pictures relating to that too.

So things regarding the Cult have pretty much ground to a halt. I haven't painted a genestealer figure in probably around 6 months and a Games Workshop one in a similar amount of time. Factors affecting it include my 40k gaming groups shrinking, my Imperial Guard force reaching a state where I don't need that much more to it (I buy what I like the look of first and value for points second) and GW's increasingly bizarre marketing strategies.

I haven't stopped painting though so I thought I'd continue this blog on in another direction and cover all of my painting (or at least all that I can be bothered to talk about and take pictures of). I must point out though that this doesn't mark the end of the cult. I probably just need to play a game or two of Space Hulk before I want to drop everything to paint genestealers - so watch this space.

Meanwhile, I've really gotten into the Pulp Genre and bought some figures from the brilliant Pulp Figures website. These figures just ooze character and I've been looking into getting into some skirmish games (currently looking into Pulp Alley and .45 Adventure) so these seemed like a good choice.

I've stuck to the gangster ones for now and here's some of the pieces that I've painted and taken photos of using my phone camera (as my other camera never seems to be charged when I need it).

If you're interested in Pulp stuff, I'm attempting to blog about it, Here.

I've still got a few more Pulp Figures on my painting level that I've just undercoated but I'm currently working on an American, 1930s office building and, after being influenced by my friend Tom's project of repainting his Heroclix Here, I'm currently repainting the Elektra Heroclix (I wanted to start with a character I wouldn't care about if I messed up).

Finally, I've started shifting to the Vallejo Model Colour paint range of which the website Encycolorpedia is very useful as if you pass it in a colour (in hex rgb format) it lists many matching paint ranges, including the Vallejo paints.

Hopefully with my blog now being a bit wider in scope I may do some more posting.

Until then...

And here's Elektra:

The Heroclix figures aren't actually that bad sculpts. I think the simple paint job they come with makes them look not as good.

Unfortunately too, they seem to be just over 28mm in scale.

Last night I also finished the 2nd floor of my office block so in a few days I might have the finished article to show.

I've done a few more pieces. As usual, please excuse the camera quality as I haven't got round to finding a solution to my camera problem.

I'll start things off though with Spider-man's greatest nemesis (excluding Doctor Doom obviously) - The Shocker.

Another, simple Heroclix repaint.

On the pulp side of things, I've finished a building and a couple more characters:

The building is one of the Sarissa Precision City Block pieces which is a really nice kit.

I also watched the Rocketeer on TV.

Well I found some time to work on painting some 40k. Its not Genestealer Cult but its a start:

Old style Storm Troopers to be used as Veterans in my Imperial Guard force. I've got 20 of these to paint up, 10 as Red Berets (Paratroopers) and 10 as Green Berets (Commandos). I'll try to equip them as best I can for their role too (i.e. the green berets have closer ranged weapons due to them most likely to infiltrate).

I've got a bastion on the go too (though I've been working on that on and off for a few years now) as well as some more Pulp stuff which I'll post if I get any more time.

As per usual, I got distracted and went off on a tangent to paint other things.

The number of painted Storm Troopers now totals a mighty: 2.

The past few months has seen me paint up a few bits an pieces, an Imperial Guard Mortar squad, a few gangsters and started work on a Valkyrie (I always seem to find painting vehicles a chore).

However, I then went and watched the new X-Men film and caught the superhero bug and decided to do some related painting. So here is...

Spider-Woman

I can't make any promises about what I'll paint next or even when I'll post a picture of it, but watch this space!

Time for more (non-Cult related) painting.

I've gone into more detail about things on my blog (http://cultoftheskyfather.blogspot.co.uk/) but I'll cover some of the basics here.

Warning: this is a lot of images. If I get too many complaints, I can put them in a spoiler tag.

I mainly use Vallejo paints, as I transition away from the Citadel paints. Though I still use some of the Citadel stuff along with some Army Painted washes (and black).

The shift is mainly for monetary reasons and that Vallejo seem to have a lot more shades (and I absolutely HATE having to mix paint). This did cause some confusion though as Vallejo have two different shades of red, both called red...

I know lots of people hate painting yellow, but I didn't have that many issues with it (I use the Citadel base yellow which is quite well at covering). My biggest issue was my lack of steady hand and managing to get black flicks over the finished yellow.

There's more Heroclix on my painting table (including a Sentinel) but with the recent release of Space Hulk, it might inspire me to go back to my set from 2009 and finally get around to painting it...

Heading back to 40k and something closer the Cult - a bald guy. Though this bald chap is more likely to be found on the opposing side of the battlefield as he's an Imperial Enforcer. The Forge World Event Figure from 2012 to be precise.

I bought this guy back when I attended Games Day. I really like the Adeptus Arbites so picked him up purely to paint. Unfortunately he sat in his packet in a box until a few months ago when I decided to paint him and his trusty hound.

(I need to get a better set up for taking photographs).

Very little shading was done on the Enforcer as the carapace, under shirt, and trousers were painted purely via highlights, whilst the hound involved a series of brown washes.

This was probably the first time I've highlighted black and not found the ordeal to be a pain.

I also have started work on the Space Marine Sergeant / Captain that was the event exclusive figure at that year's Games Day, but I've only painted his armour, so he's a long way from completion.

Hooray! Good to see you painting

You should make one out of paper, I made my light box outa a bit of wire, tape and a4 paper. Then I just push a daylight bulb against it and click. Its very small and folds flat.

Awesome to see you back to painting. What scale is that FW mini? It looks massive.

Wow, looks like its easier than I thought to make a decent lightning set up, hopefully my pictures from now on won't be of potato quality.

The mini is just standard Forge World scale (28mm?). Most Forge World stuff just seems to be better / more realistically proportioned (based off my knowledge of the GW Cadians).

Okay, its a double bill (almost) for me in that my next update isn't 4+ months apart.

Whilst I was waiting for bits an pieces on the Enforcer to dry (and in-between painting my Blood Angels Captain) I worked on a truck for the Pulp gaming I get up to.

Here's some pictures with better lighting than usual (still need to invest in a better camera though).

Whilst I was taking the last picture, the bumper and lights fell off so I had to glue them back on, however the owners are most likely to be bootleggers who don't care too much if the bumper is straight (at least that's my excuse).

I'm not that used to painting vehicles so hope it didn't come across as looking too flat. Initially I wanted to have it as black, but couldn't get it to look right, so the base is Vallejo German Grey finished with satin varnish (with gloss used for the headlights and bottles). Also, I had to battle with the superglue frosting up when I was attaching everything, does anyone know of ways to stop this from happening? Fortunately I've noticed that a coat of varnish can hide it a bit.

I've got the rest of the bootleggers in a box somewhere needing a coat of varnish so once I dig them out and finish them, I might post another shot.

Ok, so I'm back to making some scenery, hopefully a little more structured than before.

All my previous scenery you might have seen has been donated to a friend (who hosts most of the games we play) leaving me into a situation where I can't hold any games myself. I would obviously like to change this, so have decided to set myself a rather ambitious goal of building a cityfight / cities of death board.

The plan is to design everything aligned to a grid system, so I can easily add in new roads, buildings and centrepieces, but also incidental decorations, such as sandbags, tank traps etc.

I'm still in the planning phase for it at the moment (thinking of aligning everything to either a 6" grid or all buildings to a 9" grid to give an allowance of 6" for roads meaning that every 2' should consist of two buildings and a road - basically I need to put my maths hat on).

So before I make a start on the 'meat' of the project, I've been working on a couple of pieces. The first is a simple test of a technique that I read online somewhere - creating dragon's teeth tank traps out of ice cube trays.

My initial experiment has been using filler (the sort of stuff you use to fill small holes and cracks in walls and can be easily found in pound shops).

The method is cheap, but it seems to take forever for the filler to dry, so I've not been able to see any final results. I attempted removing some, one after a day, another after two days, but the filler still hadn't set, leaving me with pieces that I couldn't use for what I intended, though they could easily represent damaged teeth or rubble for elsewhere.

I'll leave the rest a few more days before removing them.

Another piece I'm working on is a centrepiece to try and make the board a little bit more than a few ruins and roads. These pieces are designed to be much bigger than the usual grid size (like 18"-24") and used to represent features such as town squares etc.

This piece is a fountain, inspired by this image I found (I believe from Stalingrad).

I'm not trying to replicate it outright, but its being used for some inspiration, and here's some WIP shots:

The first step was to cut two rings out of corrugated cardboard (as I had plenty of it lying about) and attaching strips of thin card to the sides to create the basic structure. The gap was unintentional (due to my bad measuring skills, but I plan of knocking holes in it etc, so its not all bad.

The next step was to get some thicker card (I used mountboard) and create a lip (if that's the correct word) to the wall, to give it a bit more of an interesting shape. I used two strips on the inside and outside. Once the glue had set, it had the bonus of giving the fountain a little more structure.

The last step I've done so far is to apply filler to the top, to create a bit more strength but also, when sanded, should provide me with a bit more of a level surface to top off.

I've cut out some more mountboard to place the fountain on, to raise it up a little from the base it will sit on, and its going to be topped with two sheets of foamcore stuck together and bevelled off.

Its still a way from completion, but I think its coming along alright.

So the tank traps didn't work. The filler didn't set properly, cracked and seemed really brittle. The next step is to attempt it using air drying clay or plaster.

The fountain is coming along nicely:

The top was made from two sheets of foamcore stuck together, cut to shape, bevelled and sanded (which makes a LOT of mess).

I then used a ballpoint pen to create the grooves between the topping slabs and some minor details such as bullet holes. I also filled in some of the gaps with filler.

The fountain was then stuck to the first part of its base (to raise it up a little from the base it will eventually sit on), more damage was applied with a knife and more filler was applied, also to the top to emphasise the damage and give them a bit more of a texture.

The hole was filled with a little more filler to represent damaged masonry / cement and topped with some rubble, created from the parts I'd cut off whilst making the damage.

The next step is to create the centrepiece, probably from a cut down Pringles tube, though I'm unsure what to use for the statues...

Additionally, I started work on a plasma generator to provide power to the surrounding buildings.

The main structure is made from an old cheesecake carton that I extended with some thick card. The plasma coils have been made from stripped back corrugated cardboard.
