Depraved's Workbench [2023 revival] @ 2011/09/12 19:05:45

Post by: Depraved

I have three main armies in various stages of modeling and painting. I am mainly in it for the love of modeling and so I don't get very caught up in fluff or rules considerations. I have been inspired by many blogs on Dakka and so now I guess its my turn to share.

My latest completed project started as a "Fisher Price" toy garage. It was also the first time I experimented with rust/corrosion effects

I bought a large collection of Tyranid that included a whole bunch of the old warrior model which I think are completely ridiculous. But when combined with some modern warrior bitz I think they turned out pretty cool.

My sister used to have that garage! You did a great job with it; I didn't recognize it until you pointed that out. Everything else is good as well. The Gretchin are painted nicely.

Yay! I love your conversion of the garage. I personally have used one of their old white castle things for a Fantasy castle (Pics in my gallery when I get home tonight), but no-one in my local club wants to use it because they can't be bothered to figure out rules for it

I have to say you've done a great job on the weathering effects, especially with the rusted corrugated metal and elevator, and I especially like the little posters on the support columns!

Now I'm tempted to find one of their old McDonalds restaraunts and make a wrecked drive-thru, with tank traps in the drive-thru-lane

Here is a little side project I have been working on. I got some trees from the model train shop and put them on cheap craft store magnets. The plan is to put the metal sheet under my battle mat and arrange the forest however I want. It works pretty well. I hindsight I should have used small rare earth magnets so they wouldn't be so obvious. I had some ordered but that fell through... I still have 23 tree armatures so once I get my magnets from K&J I will finish it off.
They are pretty fun to put together you can twist and bend the armature into what ever shape you want. I painted them with some bulk brown and then spots of Bleached bone and small dabs of camo green.

ignore the glue it dried clear....

Also I picked this up at a garage sale for 25 cents, it was a boring glossy brown color so I put 3 shades of grey on it. Thinking about plugging the hole on top with magnets for some kind of turret or comm tower.

And finally I picked these babies up for 3 dollars!!! Its the really old version with crappy terminators but the genestealers are pretty decent and none of them are assembled or painted!!! Its a pretty complete set from what I can tell. I figure I will paint up the terminators as corroded copper statues for a terrain piece..

I used textured plasticard from evergreen plastic

For my next terrain conversion I picked up some hirst-arts molds. If you have never heard of them I highly recommend them. https://www.hirstarts.com/

The Blue molds are from the SCI-FI section of Hirst-Arts. The others I made with Smooth-On products.

After quickly casting them a few times I have a huge selection of parts. Note the first couple cast came out with some bubbles but after a few casts they improved. I am using cheap plaster for this project mainly because I cant find "Dental Stone" in my area. I have resin but I reserve that for miniatures and stuff..

When I picked up the FP garage I also got the airport for 2 bucks.

the cool thing about it is this large folding catwalk thing

You can see I have already glued down some detail pieces. Im going for a transport unloading station...

I decided to use some of the poorly cast pieces anyways... battle damage right?

The fact that you cataloged and listed your projects makes you a better man than I am. Once I had the idea to get all of my unpainted minis out and line them up for painting...that was too much for me to ask myself, too scary.

Quick tip, if you're stuck using cheaper plaster than dental stone, you can add a little bit of watered down PVA glue to the plaster to at least make it slightly less crumbly, but it will take longer to set. Also, brushing on watered down PVA after the plaster dries will help strengthen it as well.

Depraved's Workbench [2023 revival] @ 2011/10/03 18:32:18

Post by: Depraved

I honestly dread painting troops. The problem is I love building them! It just alot of repetitive details to paint. Terrain is a different story because each piece is unique. So building projects keep floating to the top of the list while my armies sit neglected

Thanks for the tip! I really enjoy your work BTW. I use a wall patching product called "fix-all". It is really cheap, dries pretty fast, and will hold up to some serious abuse. The only issue I have is minor chipping if dropped on concrete. Haven't had a problem with it crumbling at all. I have had some success eliminating bubbles by soaking the molds in water mixed with a couple drops of flow aid, a tip I got from the hirst-arts website.

I finished detailing a servo arm last night, almost done with a super dakka arm. in the next couple days I hope to mold 2 torsos, 4 arms, and one back pack. once I cast these I will do more work on the legs. Here is the cyber goblins I have been working on, still a long ways to go as far as details.

one of two generic torsos taking shape

arms and backpack bits

A couple shots of the dakka arm tacked to a torso with a temporary head and pointy arm

A couple shots of the mech kit tacked to a different torso with a temporary head

Again the heads are only temporary. I plan to sculpt cyber type heads. The mech kit will have guitar wire type mechandrites and maybe a tool bag full of wrenches. The dakka arm will have a sculpted bicept and shoulder. After I cast the top half I will work on a couple leg sets.

I poured the second half of a mold containing 2 torsos, the legs and 2 cyber arms. I poured it last night and I won't get to open it up until I get off work today. I'm hoping it will cast well. I made a ton of wireframe sketches for full body sculpts and I spent last night trying a few different methods of making armatures. Most of them didn't work out.

Most of the plants are from a model train store.

the moss is clump foliage of different colors, like http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/woo/woofc683.htm

The Vines are wire panted green, sprinkled with parsley and then sprayed with matte.

I also used some flock on the fallen portion... like so http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/woo/woofl634.htm

Not a very productive weekend as I ended up playing Space Marine for Xbox instead of working on my projects. I did manage ti slap together a prototype cyber grot. The power claw did not cast well but I left it as is.. I will probably redo the legs as well. I rushed the paint job, which I regret, but here it is...

I probably should have cleaned it up a little more after taking the pieces from the mold but I was impatient. perhaps I will spend more time on the next one....

Awesome! I like the battle damage of the "miscast klaw" Makes it look used.

The leg possitioning is a bit awkward, but then again, it looks like he's stalking his next victim! Are the legs positionable? Or are they a single piece? I think a standing pose would look good too.

Is that your sculpted head?

Can't wait to see #2!

Depraved's Workbench [2023 revival] @ 2011/10/18 16:27:55

Post by: Depraved

The legs are positionable, I wanted something different because all of the GW grots look like they are squating down. I may have over done it a bit. It doesnt look so dramatic from a table top view as it does from eye level. For a prototype Im happy with it. The 1st legs are a bit thin for casting though so I have a few WIP ideas for round two. my next mold will have two different leg types, a torso, and a couple squigs. That is not my sculpted head by the way.... really need to get that done!

That cyber leg looks kick-ass! Does it make him too tall? Or is it that tiny? Your work astounds me! Love it!

It's a pretty tiny leg! I used measurements from the grot assistant in the background. It may be +/- 1mm but my aim is to give them character still while retaining their runt stature.

Awesome! scale is so hard to tell sometimes. I'm constantly holding the pieces I'm working on up to a mini of similar scale just to see if it'll work. And that's when the piece in question is in my hand! I'm totally lost looking at pictures!

No, I haven't had the time to pick up a razor knife or GS in a week or so! I think I am going through withdrawls.
I did sketch up a few things, like an idea for a Grot strapped with explosives chasing a squig with the detonator.

It's been far too long since I posted here and I have a lot of catching up to do. First time posting with an iPad.. Here goes

This is a vehicle I built from ramshackle games for a post apoc GURPs game I had running for awhile. The gun is attached via magnet.

Another one from ramshackle. This one is mainly used for scenery.

The next three shots are a fisher price airport that I started a few years back, I still would like to add some finishing touches.

And another toy turned scenery

@dsteingass yes rivets are needed.

So for my birthday I got a new camera which I am totally thrilled about. I can finally post some worthy images.

Lets start with a project I mentioned a while back. My Magnetic Forest. I used railroad trees, and magnets to create a kind of modular forest. All the pieces can be rearranged at will.

A close up of some the zombies seen above,

When I was in the army we built wooden kill houses to practice room clearing. This next project was inspired by that.
I built these using my jigsaw. Here they are laid out like a city street.

Here they are as multistory buildings

Or a single large building... with furniture

A close up of the kitchen

and just because I had the jigsaw out I started a 28mm dollhouse

These pre made little jewelry boxes made great pill boxes.

Thanks you looking. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

@darkPrince010 thanks! they were very cheap, fast and easy.

I have made an oath that I will not build, convert, sculpt, mold or cast anything until I make a significant dent in my paint list. I have several character figs that I want to spend some time with and then I have an entire Tyranid army that I am going to spray, base, and dip.

Here are a few shots from my WIP paint tray.

My son is putting together a space marine army. Here is his first squad that we built and base coated together.
An aspiring champion conversion for my Chaos army.

Some children for DnD games..

Alice in Wonderland...

I keep all my painting stuff in a small cabinet and when I set up to paint I usually have to make several trips. I made this simple little tray that will fit in the small cabinet and still hold all my stuff.

I am truly focused on getting my painting done. I got lucky and had a good day of sun and primed most of my tyranids.

Besides that I have just been working on painting my sons Space Marine squad. He helped build, picked the scheme, and helped basecoat the red. Now Im picking out the details before highlighting and washing.

The color I am using for my sons Space Marines is a mix of Red and Orange. I am trying to decide whether to highlight with Orange or a mix of orange and yellow. Any suggestions?

I have so far been able to hold true to my oath. No building until all painting is done. It is not easy for me... So many great ideas that I want to start. I just got some procreate in the mail and I am eager to get back to sculpting. I want to cast up some custom grots and squigs. First I need to paint 200+ tyranids, 30+ orcs, 2 chimeras, a basilisk, a repressor, a rhino, and tons of other misc...

Most recently I have been nearing the end of this space marine squad. I plan to give them a red wash and then some extra highlights.

Got the base coat done on my basilisk crew. Not happy with the range finder.

My commissar is just about ready for a wash

Working on getting some entertainment for the troops...

A couple psychers in the early painting stages..

Thanks for looking.

I have had these guys done for a while now but I haven't gotten around to posting them. I am using pig-iron miniatures for a Rebel IG. The idea is that they are NOT crazed chaos cultists but rather just good soldiers following the orders of a corrupt few. That way they can have a clean professional look and still be evil.

Urban scheme

Forest scheme

Sniper team

I still need to paint the vehicles but I am waiting until I get an Airbrush for that. I am really love the wicked tank treads on these guys. I see that I may need to scrape off the skull and wings in a few places..

Man, that's always hard to keep promises like that, 'cause there's always more stuff you want to build, new stuff you want to try...
I'd recommend, by the way, instead of a red wash, pick up some Liquitex Payne's Gray acrylic paint (like $2-3 at an art supply shop), thin it and do a wash with that. Works with just about any color, and looks WAY better than 99% of colored washes, in my opinion. Do a search on Payne's Gray wash and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I think the basilisk crew looks f'ing awesome.
Entertainment? I never got entertainment like that... must've been an FA thing...

Yes! Just barely sliding under the Threadcromancy timeframe.

Found a couple of your images when I was surfing the Gallery and had to find if you had a thread or not. Glad to see that you do. Your terrain is excellent! I especially like the weathering effects you've accomplished, and I'm really impressed how you've taken a Fischer Price toy garage and turned it into a functional and completely believable piece of wargame terrain.

The Zombies caught my attention as I've been putting a LOT of them together lately. And I also like the Cultists a lot. Your projects are all over the place and they are all very cool.

Subbed. I know you do not update frequently, but from what I've seen so far it's worth the wait.

@Skalk - Thanks man. Those zombies where a lot of fun to paint.

Post by: Depraved

I have decided to update and consolidate my terrain. I tossed some older pieces out into the garage to be reprocessed into something new. I have seen lots of "ruined city" builds… well mine is more of plain old city. Instead of collapsed walls and ruin I intend to have intact buildings full of purpose. I prefer small skirmish games so this suits me well.

My first update was to rip out a couple levels from the parking garage. I never really liked the way the multiple levels played. Too hard to move your models under.

The next project is updating my kill house concept. I cast a bunch of detail parts to give each room more flavor. I still need to paint them up to match the parking lot…

Your terrain is so very cool. It will be a huge twist on how games are played.

Have you had any problems w/ those Hurst casts? I have used them before. They look great but the plaster is brittle and doesn't take much to break off at the base where it is glued.
I've tried liquid and gel superglue. The glue doesn't come undone, it's the plaster that actually breaks at the base. There is always a bit of plaster left glued to the base of whatever I had it glued to. I can re-glue it w/o a problem but it always chips paint and will eventually break again- just above the new glue. . If you check some of my terrain pieces you'll see boxes and barrels and other things cast from Hurst. They look great (Hurst is awesome) but I've had some really bad luck with them.

Depraved's Workbench [2023 revival] @ 2013/11/25 17:49:34

Post by: Depraved

I love the Hirst arts molds. The durability of the cast really depends on the quality of the plaster. The best I have heard of is dental stone... not easy to find in my area. I use a product called FIX-IT-ALL. I buy it at home depot for pretty cheap. It is also very helpful patching holes around the house.

I have had issues gluing it down if I haven't given the plaster enough time to dry. Some people use a food dehydrator or the oven... I like to set it by the fireplace until it gets a yellowish tint to it. I have had to same experience you describe with the plaster breaking and the glue holding, but never with a fully hardened piece.

My Mageknight terrain is around 6 years old and has maybe a handful of chips. Its has been handled pretty roughly too.

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe

I usually cast a bunch at once and then don't use them for a long time (I lose interest in things when I have to wait for them) but I cast with hydrocal (slightly tougher than plaster). I've seen dental stone in action (I've bought some things from sellers on eBay) and while it is tougher it is still prone to breakage. Lost another barrel and crate this weekend in a game.

I need to step up to resin.
