Yay! I love your conversion of the garage. I personally have used one of their old white castle things for a Fantasy castle (Pics in my gallery when I get home tonight), but no-one in my local club wants to use it because they can't be bothered to figure out rules for it I have to say you've done a great job on the weathering effects, especially with the rusted corrugated metal and elevator, and I especially like the little posters on the support columns! Now I'm tempted to find one of their old McDonalds restaraunts and make a wrecked drive-thru, with tank traps in the drive-thru-lane

Here is a little side project I have been working on. I got some trees from the model train shop and put them on cheap craft store magnets. The plan is to put the metal sheet under my battle mat and arrange the forest however I want. It works pretty well. I hindsight I should have used small rare earth magnets so they wouldn't be so obvious. I had some ordered but that fell through... I still have 23 tree armatures so once I get my magnets from K&J I will finish it off.
They are pretty fun to put together you can twist and bend the armature into what ever shape you want. I painted them with some bulk brown and then spots of Bleached bone and small dabs of camo green.
ignore the glue it dried clear....
Also I picked this up at a garage sale for 25 cents, it was a boring glossy brown color so I put 3 shades of grey on it. Thinking about plugging the hole on top with magnets for some kind of turret or comm tower.
And finally I picked these babies up for 3 dollars!!! Its the really old version with crappy terminators but the genestealers are pretty decent and none of them are assembled or painted!!! Its a pretty complete set from what I can tell. I figure I will paint up the terminators as corroded copper statues for a terrain piece..

I used textured plasticard from evergreen plastic
Automatically Appended Next Post: For my next terrain conversion I picked up some hirst-arts molds. If you have never heard of them I highly recommend them. https://www.hirstarts.com/
The Blue molds are from the SCI-FI section of Hirst-Arts. The others I made with Smooth-On products.
After quickly casting them a few times I have a huge selection of parts. Note the first couple cast came out with some bubbles but after a few casts they improved. I am using cheap plaster for this project mainly because I cant find "Dental Stone" in my area. I have resin but I reserve that for miniatures and stuff..
When I picked up the FP garage I also got the airport for 2 bucks.
the cool thing about it is this large folding catwalk thing
You can see I have already glued down some detail pieces. Im going for a transport unloading station...
I decided to use some of the poorly cast pieces anyways... battle damage right?

Quick tip, if you're stuck using cheaper plaster than dental stone, you can add a little bit of watered down PVA glue to the plaster to at least make it slightly less crumbly, but it will take longer to set. Also, brushing on watered down PVA after the plaster dries will help strengthen it as well.

I honestly dread painting troops. The problem is I love building them! It just alot of repetitive details to paint. Terrain is a different story because each piece is unique. So building projects keep floating to the top of the list while my armies sit neglected Automatically Appended Next Post: Terraformer wrote:Quick tip, if you're stuck using cheaper plaster than dental stone, you can add a little bit of watered down PVA glue to the plaster to at least make it slightly less crumbly, but it will take longer to set. Thanks for the tip! I really enjoy your work BTW. I use a wall patching product called "fix-all". It is really cheap, dries pretty fast, and will hold up to some serious abuse. The only issue I have is minor chipping if dropped on concrete. Haven't had a problem with it crumbling at all. I have had some success eliminating bubbles by soaking the molds in water mixed with a couple drops of flow aid, a tip I got from the hirst-arts website.

one of two generic torsos taking shape
arms and backpack bits
A couple shots of the dakka arm tacked to a torso with a temporary head and pointy arm
A couple shots of the mech kit tacked to a different torso with a temporary head
Again the heads are only temporary. I plan to sculpt cyber type heads. The mech kit will have guitar wire type mechandrites and maybe a tool bag full of wrenches. The dakka arm will have a sculpted bicept and shoulder. After I cast the top half I will work on a couple leg sets.

Most of the plants are from a model train store.
the moss is clump foliage of different colors, like http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/woo/woofc683.htm
The Vines are wire panted green, sprinkled with parsley and then sprayed with matte.
I also used some flock on the fallen portion... like so http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/woo/woofl634.htm

Awesome! I like the battle damage of the "miscast klaw" Makes it look used.
The leg possitioning is a bit awkward, but then again, it looks like he's stalking his next victim! Are the legs positionable? Or are they a single piece? I think a standing pose would look good too.
Is that your sculpted head?
Can't wait to see #2!
36711
Post by: Depraved
The legs are positionable, I wanted something different because all of the GW grots look like they are squating down. I may have over done it a bit. It doesnt look so dramatic from a table top view as it does from eye level. For a prototype Im happy with it. The 1st legs are a bit thin for casting though so I have a few WIP ideas for round two. my next mold will have two different leg types, a torso, and a couple squigs. That is not my sculpted head by the way.... really need to get that done!

I keep all my painting stuff in a small cabinet and when I set up to paint I usually have to make several trips. I made this simple little tray that will fit in the small cabinet and still hold all my stuff.
I am truly focused on getting my painting done. I got lucky and had a good day of sun and primed most of my tyranids.
Besides that I have just been working on painting my sons Space Marine squad. He helped build, picked the scheme, and helped basecoat the red. Now Im picking out the details before highlighting and washing.

Most recently I have been nearing the end of this space marine squad. I plan to give them a red wash and then some extra highlights.
Got the base coat done on my basilisk crew. Not happy with the range finder.

Working on getting some entertainment for the troops...

I have had these guys done for a while now but I haven't gotten around to posting them. I am using pig-iron miniatures for a Rebel IG. Man, that's always hard to keep promises like that, 'cause there's always more stuff you want to build, new stuff you want to try...
I'd recommend, by the way, instead of a red wash, pick up some Liquitex Payne's Gray acrylic paint (like $2-3 at an art supply shop), thin it and do a wash with that. Works with just about any color, and looks WAY better than 99% of colored washes, in my opinion. Do a search on Payne's Gray wash and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I think the basilisk crew looks f'ing awesome.

Have you had any problems w/ those Hurst casts? I have used them before. They look great but the plaster is brittle and doesn't take much to break off at the base where it is glued.
I've tried liquid and gel superglue. The glue doesn't come undone, it's the plaster that actually breaks at the base. There is always a bit of plaster left glued to the base of whatever I had it glued to. I can re-glue it w/o a problem but it always chips paint and will eventually break again- just above the new glue. . If you check some of my terrain pieces you'll see boxes and barrels and other things cast from Hurst. They look great (Hurst is awesome) but I've had some really bad luck with them.

I love the Hirst arts molds. The durability of the cast really depends on the quality of the plaster. The best I have heard of is dental stone... not easy to find in my area. I use a product called FIX-IT-ALL. I buy it at home depot for pretty cheap. It is also very helpful patching holes around the house.
I have had issues gluing it down if I haven't given the plaster enough time to dry. Some people use a food dehydrator or the oven... I like to set it by the fireplace until it gets a yellowish tint to it. I have had to same experience you describe with the plaster breaking and the glue holding, but never with a fully hardened piece.
My Mageknight terrain is around 6 years old and has maybe a handful of chips. Its has been handled pretty roughly too.

I usually cast a bunch at once and then don't use them for a long time (I lose interest in things when I have to wait for them) but I cast with hydrocal (slightly tougher than plaster). I've seen dental stone in action (I've bought some things from sellers on eBay) and while it is tougher it is still prone to breakage. Lost another barrel and crate this weekend in a game.
I need to step up to resin.

Some really nice scratchbuilding and kit bashing in this thread, as well as some excellent painting!
I love the fallen tower - it is rare to see good combinations of urban and overgrown terrain. Very nice.

Thanks that is my favorite piece and I am really happy with how it turned out.

I am clearing some space in my hobby schedule to work on a project I have been excited about for quite a while. For those who haven't seen btldoomhammer's sculpting threads I encourage you to look him up. I bought a set of his possessed terminators and I am in the process of assembling them.
Check out his thread for more http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/534015.page
Please forgive the poor pictures it was hard to capture the details on the white resin. Once I get some paint on them I am hoping you will see how beautiful the detail is on these.
I did a head swap on these guys. I have been itching to use these bits on something.

AJ those are off duty MP's. I thought you would recognize that. lol
If that's the case, then you need to make them sluttier-looking...
I just saw this. As a former MP I have to say I cannot disagree much. The miniskirt wasn't so bad, but man it was a bitch to shave my legs all the time.

Things are a bit jumbled up at the moment, but here is a castle that I built when I was 12. It is completely modular so you can build it several different ways.
