Reviews looking pretty good, from the beta(and vids online) the gameplay is much snappier and faster than GoW2. Horde mode/tower defense looks awesome.
Should keep me pretty busy till Exterminatus for Space Marine comes out anyway
Will be looking for you guys online to play horde with (will probably be switching between that, Exterminatus, and Firefight (when Halo:Anniv comes out))
Can't wait to get my hands back on that hammerburst.
I just hope they are done milking this series after this game. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the series but there comes a time when enough is enough. These guys need to make something else good and not just cover-based shooters.
the waiting, the clocks ticking in my head, I've got to get it, soon, only 12 hours until I've got my precious, holding it close until I can get home and play the campian.
huh, what you saying, yeah, gonna burn through the campain soaking up all the juicy story goodness before hitting tower defence hoard 2.0. unfortunatly I didn't get to play the beta, so it'll all be new to me
Gonna do the campaign on Wednesday with the wife (going to try and get HER to play on normal, I'll be playing on hardcore).
So make sure you spoil stuff if you feel the need to post! I'm sure I'll have some horde impressions tomorrow, since I am getting it at midnight tonight.
The Vulcan Canon, in multiplayer does it ever require two players, does anyone who played the beta know? I've seen it used on a video by one guy, but he never seemed able to fire long bursts before seemingly reloading. It could just be how he was playing it. I would be heavily amused/enjoy a team portable weapon in GoW 3 multiplayer.

Vulcan Cannon wasn't in the beta (at least, for me it wasn't), but yes, it requires two players; one to hold the ammo, one to fire the gun.
My worry is how fething hard that thing will hit; the Mulcher ALREADY shreds people it looks at.
Tried to get my copy from gamestop early, no dice.

Well if it needs two guys for it to work proppa in multi, I'm fine being the carrier, just to watch the fireworks.
I love it because it reminds me of those HMG teams in WW2 games.
I really like the ad on TV atm, but I won't be getting it, can't buy every game, and this one falls under, looks interesting, but my games budget is needed elsewhere. Not picked up any of the series either, so even if I did, would need to start with GoW.

STORY SPOILERS!
Gears of War 1:
Spoiler:
Dom breaks Marcus out of jail, Delta tries to deploy the lightmass bomb, fails, drives a train into the imulsion setting off the bomb, dealing a crippling blow to the locust
Gears of War 2:
Spoiler:
Locust come back, stronger than ever, COG leaders send CoG's underground to battle against the Hive in it's natural habitat. Marcus and Co find Fenix's dad's voice in a locust computer, Locust are having a civil war against the Lambent, Hollow Floods, Locust disappear for a while. Jacinto, last human refuge, is lost.
Also, did anyone notice how Anya swears like a sailor compared to everyone else?
Dom:
"Gak, my guns jammed!"
"Too many of them!"
"Eat it!"
Marcus:
"Eat gak and die!"
"Whose next?"
"Friendly Fire!"
Anya:
"FETH YOU!"
"FETHIN HURTS!"
"Stupid peice of fething gak!"
Baird's method of defeating the Lambent Leviathan had me in stitches. I saw the giant cargo container and thought "Ok, it's full of explosives and he's gonna drop it. No. It wasn't. Oh god, watching all the ticks fall down, I laughed.
I'm not clicking that spoiler yet, since you give no context as to what it will be
Just played some horde after I got home with the game last night, feels so good. Got to wave 19 with randoms, at first I thought it being on normal would be easy... but once we got past like, wave 15... yikes.
I'm lacing up my gloves to fight Best Buy's shenanigans.
Apparently, many people who preordered the Limited Edition online received an email yesterday stating that it was "delayed in reaching our warehouse" and giving no estimate as to when it will release. There's also many, many people who have not received anything about the preorder bonus skin, so that resulted in many unhappy campers.
I expect this from GameStop. I do not expect this from Best Buy.
So, horde mode is fantastic. I really love the base building/tower defense stuff they have added to it.
Got to wave 19 last night online, boss waves are insane.
Got to wave 10 with a friend duo'ing it earlier, every 10th wave is a boss wave... and we got 2 berserkers, and a bunch of other guys. We did not survive.
daedalus-templarius wrote:So uh, how are you really supposed to killed the "bulletproof priest" in horde anyway?
I dumped about an entire turret full of ammo into him and he just decided to blow me up afterwards.
Snipe him in the mouth when shouts (1 shot kill). Explosives are their big weakness though. Stick a grenade or 2 on them, shoot them with boomshot/digger/torque bow. All worked wonders for me in campaign anyway.

Mhm.. btw, it feels like the campaign would lose A LOT of its weight if you haven't read the books, theres a lot of characters that have never been seen before in the video games, that actually played huge roles in the books( Bernie, Sam, Trescu etc.)
I haven't read the books, I'll let you know how I feel about the campaign once I finish
I tried some TDM last night, and I appear to be just as poor in it as I was in the beta. I really don't know why I am bad at it, as I always do well in Halo and Space Marine, and this game isn't THAT much different.
Ok, maybe people rolling up on my face with the DBS doesn't help. I started using the DBS because I kept dying to it, and man, that gun... why Epic, why. I just laugh when I get kills with it, you don't even have to aim. Get close, make sure they are in front of you, they die.
I love the Hammerburst in campaign and horde, but I just can't seem to get it to work as well in versus, it just seems like it takes a ton of shots to down someone (even though I know it only takes 6), and the Lancer just seems to work better simply because its clip goes on forever.
Even though they buffed rifles in this game, it still doesn't feel like they are powerful enough to compare to the shotties, but I know that's what GoW is all about, so its fine... just maybe not my preference, lol. Maybe I should start trying to use the retro to stop all these shotty scrubs.
I enjoyed the campaign, although boy was it short! ~6 hours i'd guess. I think i could possibly finish it on Hardcore but some parts could get mighty frustrating. They broke up the pacing really well though.
One thing for the experts, how do you kill those giant lambent snail men without expending hundreds of bullets?

It took me near 10 hours (on hardcore) I find under 6 HIGHLY unlikely...

And ehm, explosives?
Bolded for emphasis; he didn't do it on Hardcore to start with, but said he might be able to with some bits.
Don't worry, Sol, you're still the king of completing games super-fast on top level difficulty
Oh, I don't actually care about that. My point is, a 4 hour difference between difficulties seems very unlikely. Though I did do act 1-4 with a (Noob) buddy...
May have been as much as 7.5 but that is timewise the max it could have been. I started playing after 5 yesterday, put in another hour and a half today.
Take into account the fact on hardcore you have to take alot more cover, (i would imagine) i run and gunned most my way through it. The bolter pistol and retro made this a valid option imo.
I enjoyed the last battle, but not the ending. (also, gametime on normal was 8 hours for me)
Spoiler:
I was pissed off when all the Locust and the Queen die. Really pissed off, I wanted them to live. Queen Myrrah was probably my favourite character (the Locust rock).
It was kinda stupid how she was screaming HUBRIS! and Adam's ARROGANCE etc, and then her being so "arrogant" meant she definately died, instead of "maybe, just maybe not die". Ah well.
If the locust hadnt insisted on wiping out humanity just enslaving them, they might have deserved to live. Saying that I still think it was a bit harsh wiping them out, they should have been allowed to go underground
Ive been playing a bit (by a bit i mean 'a bit of an unhealthy session', (days off ) )of the multiplayer; Anyone else noticed the prevalance of Butt-frakking quitters? A guy dies once in horde/beast and he quits.
Only played 3 games of hordes, and only had 1 guy quit. However, I expect to see many more.
I just had to quit a game as my controller went funny, but that's about it.
Not really sure which I prefer, Horde or Beast. I mean, it's fun making those crap dakka turrets and blazing away at someone at point blank and still managing to miss half the shots , but Kantus Priests!
Watched a video where some right arse was using it, seriously he was good at abusing the retro and the DBS, but he was also a gak to his own team. One of his had just been downed by a COG, and he killed the COG, teabagged the downed Drone and then ran off to leave him to bleed out.
When I say DBS I mean double-barreled shotgun, also its known as the SOS, sawed-off shotgun.
Finished the campaign...
Spoiler:
WHY DOM!? WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST SHOOT THE TANK?!
Also, Marcus' father turning to dust before his eyes was pretty intense. I really enjoyed the campaign as a whole, I think Reach hit me a little harder though; but maybe that is because its just really dark. Halo 3 you lose a lot of people that have been around forever, but I haven't played it in a bit; I imagine its pretty strong as well.
Overall very pleased with the game so far, except for the aforementioned DBS/SOS
The Sawed-off is overpowered? Really? No, it isn't. The range is pathetic, it's only useful when you have the barrel literally placed up against the enemy, then it's a one-hit. The Gnasher out-classes it comprehensively, better range, better accuracy, more shots to a reload, higher rate of fire. It even takes people out just as well as the SOS in the latter's effective range.

Mhm opposite for me...
Spoiler:
Reach's characters were so one dimensional and didn't even give you time/interaction to get any connection with them going. The GoW characters are much more talky, and well, theres 4 books. I felt all of it:(
I haven't read any of the books, but after finishing the campaign I was thinking of picking up the first one.
I'm not saying I didn't feel the campaign, I really liked it and thought everything was really well done.
Spoiler:
I did get a little choked up losing Dom; I think the only character I got choked up losing in Reach was Kat, just because it was so poingent that death could literally be around any corner.
Reach's characters were pretty 1-dimensional, but I still liked how they developed over the course of the game.
When the scene with Dom running away, getting in truck, driving off, driving back and killing himself, as it went on I was chanting "Yes, yes, yes!" louder and louder, until he died, whereupon I just laughed for a good 5 minutes.
I thought the scene and the one in the graveyard were well directed/written and quite moving, especially the hit of nostalgia when the piano from 'madworld' plays. The scene with doms wife in 2, apart from the delusion (still wearing her high heels eh?) aspect, was pretty laughable in comparison
Just noticed someone playing as a skinny 1970's action hero Marcus. Do you have to be like level a billion? I think it looks pretty neato.
I wasnt moved in the slightest by any part of reach bar the end, and the inevitable nostalgia.
Medium of Death wrote:Sorry, I'm just of the opinion that if a video game company wants to introduce new characters they should probably do that in the game.
I'm not bothered about reading a terrible Gears book.
The female gears look weedy in comparison to their counterparts.
It wouldn't be so bad if they're were one or two mix in that didn't look as if they could be snapped in half.
Anya who gak's herself at the thought of combat with drones in the first game is now some kind of badass?
LAME.
Almost 3 years have passed since gears one m8. And the books really aren't terrible, they are a great read. And they could make at least 2 full games with the books.
Spoiler:
I'm still pissed about Mathieson dying in the first 30 mins without ever getting to see him.
Bernie will be playable with the first DLC (november by the looks of it.)
We fought a Lambent Berserker at Wave 20 just now, and one guy quit upon seeing it. One died to the horde of Boomers (of various types) that spawned with it, and I died when I misjudged a roll against the Berserker.
In the end it was one guy against a fresh Lambent Berserker.
It was no contest... but we ended up disbanding after the next wave.
Beast mode is far too short. Having Boss rounds and more Locust AI's would help. Having a limit on the number of people that can take a class would do as well, I do't want everyone to take Serapedes. I needs to reward strategy more, and needs a versus mode.
I played horde on Overpass, took the upper-level base, had two first level multi turrets and the four laser gates. Me and two friends took on a brumak and a lambent bezerker, the lambent 'zerker was easy they passed it between them while I ripped into it with the turrets, and the brumak was even easier, the hammer killed it for $800, using the full charge.
However the other game I played we got 2 normal 'zerkers, they were relativly tough, we died because I didn't know about the hammer at that game, so I wwas running away on my own when I found it.
overall horde is fun, but beast is better, it should go to wave 50 as well.
they should think about a horde Vs. Beast too, you gain points depending on who wins.
So I guess I found what I am decent at in versus: Lancer'ing the gak out of people. Not so hot with the shotguns, although the SOS gets it done when I REALLY need it, feels so dirty to use that thing though.

Me im more a horde/beast sort of person, dont play much online. And has anybody found out what the secret achivement is?
Yeh its a bitch to repair, my friend unlocked it and the 4 other people in the game just gave him money till we unlocked it though, but we learned to save it for the boss waves, seriously, reavers arent fun.
Armoured Kantus are a joke.
One grenade tag is an instagib, or for variety--do a Hammer of Dawn/Frag Grenade/whatever explosive to down them and then shoot them in their mouth when they scream.
Kanluwen wrote:Armoured Kantus are a joke.

Or just take a sniper rifle and shoot them straight in the mouth

I just unlocked level 5 turret which is the Troika, a few waves before facing my first Brumak. Solo'd him as the rest of the team killed the boomers. It was pitifully easy with this beast of a turret.
Got to thirty one yesterday on 'overpass', then the host left. It was mainly because we had reavers, Junkers and Corpsers as the boss waves, much easier than those wretched bezerkers.
Just finished the game on Hardcore in 12ish hours or so with my mate over 2 days haha.
I must say it didnt disappoint
Few points to make in a spoiler tag for obvious reasons:
Spoiler:
I was pretty sure Carmine died, I thought I saw him get beaten to death by his own arm D:
Dom's death was awesome yet sad.
Markus' dad dying was somewhat expected since I had a gut instinct that he injected himself with the parasitic imulsion.
The lambent zerker was the most annoying boss in that game!
The final boss was pretty mediocre imo, its a case of shoot in face use HOD, shoot in face use HOD and repeat.
Still fun though, now I dont need to wait for a 4th or buy the 3rd now since im not too bothered about playing online in ranked matches.

Spoiler:
That was Jinx, a named "Nameless" Redshirt, Carmine was shot down by the BATTLE BUTTERFLY!
I found that Dom's Death was powerful because they played Mad World during it, which was the same song they played for Gears of War 1's Commercial.
Yeah, I figured as much too.
Agreed, Lambent Zerker needs to be shot in the chest, repeatedly, and violently.
Don't mock the BATTLE BUTTERFLY!
Absolutely loved the gears series, and Gow3 didn't disappoint.
Spoiler:
When Dom died, and he was yelling out to Maria really scared/angrily, and then at the end when Marcus's dad died,
it kinda made me feel ill. Like I loved the campaign, but we've invested so much time playing as Marcus and he just
loses everything in the end(minus Anya). As I said, good trilogy, but kinda heartbreaking ending.

Spoiler:
The only thing I hated about Doms death was the fact that the "Brothers to the end" achievment appeared before he actually died, meaning you could guess what was gonna happen. If it was given after then it may have been a bit more shocking, still the music made it pretty sad tbh.
Least Gears 3 isnt a complete sausage fest this time(My memory may be bad since its been the weekend of its release since I played gears 2)

10 Internets to Slarg, for remembering the quote.
Man, that whole sequence went from heart-breakingly touching, to just pure awesome. I don't know if I'd rank it above the other part, but it was definitely memorable.
You play as Tai, Kimh, Barrick, and newcomer Alicia, for three hours of Gameplay in a prequal to Gears of War 1. Comes with six characters, a new weapon set, and 250 Gamerscore.
