Out of random curiosity, why did you choose your army/armies.

Space Marines, because they came in the AoBR box.

Necrons, because there's something awesome about them...and they'll be updated before Tau.

Dark Mechdar's pretty funny to play against CC armies with, and there's a lot of them where I play at.

Chaos space marines cause they fit my play style of up close and personal and aggressive, my longest range weapon is 24".

I picked Space Wolves, Like 8 years ago i had a buddy that was into this hard core and he played CSM. He had some regular marines and all the marine codexes, i remember Wolves looking the coolest. We played one game and i got DECIMATED. After that i started to read the novels and just fell in love with Fenris and all the fluff, so here i am.

Heh, which army?

I play SW as a main army, because I like their aesthetic. Sure, the fluff sucks, but then again, I don't read the fluff in Codexes.

Necrons, because of the terminator feeling you get from seeing hordes of warriors marching. Also there were many IG players which discouraged me from playing IG.
Dark Angels, after the 5th edition turned the Necrons into scrap metal, I decided to play a marine army and DA fluff, Deathwing, Ravenwing, Sammael made the choice easy for me.

Blood Angels, because I love the color red and the AOBR box can be used to make Blood Angels. Also I love my fast vehicles.

Orks, because theyre ORKS!! No really, I collect them for their background.

Space Marines... because I like blue.

Eldar: They're highly advanced magic wielding elves....in SPACE! Really the only thing they're missing is a dragon in some form and they'd be completely set.

I started them after playing Dawn of War for a long while, and would always play Eldar in that (I loved howling banshees and the seer council).

Necrons, mostly because I loved their cosmic horror-themed fluff, and I enjoyed their aesthetic.

Space Marines because I was young and foolish.

Chaos, because my brother played vanilla marines.

Space marines were my first army back at the beginning of 4th edition. I decided on them because I had heard they were the best for beginners and I loved the dreadnought models. Second was orks because of their fluff and orky style. My third army I just recently started was dark eldar because I wanted something really evil and more of an expert army. That and the models look incredible.

Chaos marines because the cover of the 3.5 codex was cool. Plus, spiky bits, ya know.

Eldar.

I like Ninja Stars.

Iranna.

Deathkorps Of Krieg, with later became bloodpact. I never liked CSM/SM due to the sheer amounts of armies you see that looks almost the same. I also likes the background of the IG, and the sheer amount of conversion options you have with a standard squad. And having lots and lots of tanks dont hurtt either

Space Marines because the "big guys in big armor with big guns" thing appeals to me. Crimson Fists specifically because I got a whole bunch of RT Marines and that was the colorscheme they had on the box and rulebook back then.

Orks because they came in AoBR.

IG because Catachans are awesome, and I just went from there and got more and more tanks. I ended up getting Cadians and Steel Legion as well, due to Dawn of War and the great Steel Legion mod I used to play in Dark Crusade.

My Iron Warriors are mostly because of Storm of Iron and the totally fly caution stripes.

Tau because I like the idea of playing the underdog, the small fish in a very big Pond.

Daemons because I wanted an army that was just complete and utter Chaos (both on TT and ingame) and the way Daemons work just seemed to fit it just right( never know what you'll start on the board with.....)

Death Wing. Because our Chapter is completely loyal, we have no idea what you're talking about

Orks because I went in on AoBR with a friend and didn't want Marines. I also wanted them because I knew I'd have a ton of fun building, painting and converting them. I don't regret my choice at all.

Necrons.

To quote Sovereign...

I started with Chaos Space Marines (in 3rd edition) because they are badbottom killers. I then stated collecting Tau when the new CSM codex (4th edition) came out and pissed me off. After going on a three year hiatus without 40k I went to Blood angels because chaos hadn't been updated yet and my Tau went missing (found them later on but I alread had a BA army). Now I'm back to my Chaos withing that the codex would get updated next summer.

Orks, because of their casually bloodthirsty attitude. And now my interest in them has been rejuvenated thanks to Imperial Armor 8. (Unfurls and begins to read the scroll of protection against the Daemon Alpharius...)

Orks, cuz they are fun to play and because im getting alot of them for very cheap

Back in the early 90's we bought the box set with Marines and Orks. Brother Dave turned the Marines to Chaos, and I got the Orks. Got out of it for like 15 years, and then everybody started playing again. My brothers and friends were fielding Chaos, Daemons, Blood Angels, Imperial Guard, Tau, and Eldar. I wanted to play something different, so I excavated my Orks from Mom's attic, blew a hundred bucks on the internet, and inherited everybody's AOBR leftovers. The Ghenghis Jon WAAAGH! was born.

Space Wolves. Because we got the stabbin' and the Dakka' And we got power armor!

And were vikings in space. Mind you we -now- have a wolf obsession bordering on the furry.

Bordering however. Space Wolves are Vikings. Not furries.

Eldar: Because they weren't orks or SM (first army) during RT.
SM - because they weren't orks and weren't spiky later RT period (for a change from my eldar).
Guard - because they still weren't orks and weren't spiky, either - 2nd ed period (and the SM models for 2nd ed were pretty lame, honestly).
GK - because the models rocked.

I played Salamanders before I got out of the hobby years ago because they're simply the best chapter.

When I got back into the hobby, the idea of more power armour annoyed me, so I went with the army I have always loved but could never afford as a student, horde Tyranids.

Ork because I love their fluff and I got them practically given to me.

Eldar-Best looking tanks and some of the best looking minatures in the game. Also I love the fluff.
Grey Knights- Started them purely because I loved the grey knights omnibus and was looking for an army to start.Plus who dosn't love psykers?

BA(Angels Encarmine chapter) cause I like fast pacing armies and I like the up close and personal style of them

Dark Eldar because I like spiky S&M space elves of doom.

On a more serious note, I started the hobby when the new DE models came out, and they appealed to my sense of aesthetics like no other army did. I also love their fluff and their playstyle. I don't care if they're one of the hardest armies to play for newbies, I won't budge from them.

Ultramarines allows me access to heavy infantry and equipment in quantity as befits a greco-roman styled military, and a force that behaves remotely like a military force to boot. They also look awesome.

Bonus points since New vegas came out, it allows me to troll the opponent by greeting him with "Ave, true to Calgar."

Soon to be Emperor's Children because I love the Noise Marines

Space Wolves. I was so enthralled by the idea of a band of barely sane werewolve-like super humans endless searching through hell to kill daemons and their traitorous brothers. ie 13th company, that I could barely resist them. And the second I saw the models and how they blended technology with the archaic, i was hooked. The fact that they are a band of space going vikings is just icing.

Secondly I have daemons. Why? Well why not? Things happen, does it need a reason? It wouldnt be chaotic enough if i did! But really, I just love the chaotic feel of the deamons. Do whatever you want and there needs to be no reason behind it, Chaos loves chaos. And the table top of them is too much fun. I always follow the khorne philosophy, that blood spilled, is blood spilled for chaos, doesnt matter if its a imperial or daemon, just have fun and a big dead pile. Much like orks in that respect.

I play the guard from the Second Imperium of Men. When I first started getting interested in 40k I talked with the cute girl at the GW store at the mall. She told me about the differant armies and guard seemed the most interesting to me. I've also recently started to get interesting in Orks. I don't know if I'll ever play them, but having fun building them! Starting to get interested in building a SM army. Got lots and lots of marine stuff laying around, just don't know what codex to go with (chapter will be my own chapter). Used to have an Inquisitional army once, but then GW F*ed that up for me

IG, because in 1998 my dad rented this movie.

Its also the reason I prefer to play against nids.

Grey Knights because that literary masterpiece from ben counter was the thing which draw me to 40k.

Eldar because i found an auction which was selling some stuff dirt cheap

Armored Company (now Armored Battlegroup) because I'm a tread-head.

What first got me back into the hobby were the new tyranids, IMHO the trygon is the finest miniature in the entire range. Raveners, new gargoyles, even gaunts just impressed me with their quality the top-notch organic design. Fairly easy to paint too which I needed to ease back into.

Then I went for Eldar because I wanted a versatile army that was totally different to the nids. I did not want marines because everyone had them and I had Eldar right back in rogue trooper days. I liked the variety in the types of units and the colour schemes (not that I am any respecter of their default schemes).

Finally Grey Knights because I wanted a third army and I decided that an ultra-elite force was the way to go and I had no imperials. Liked the idea of a few rock-hard guys who could face any odds and the models are fantastic.

Love the DE models, if I had the cash I would get a DE army too (other than the vehicles which I think are pretty weak), but the troops and special figures are stonking, great stuff.

in order I got a space marine army after hearing that they were good for beginners and plus I love the imperial fists background. when I had a few games under my belt I moved up to tau because I liked the under dog feel of the army( I know how foolish of me) and got my tail roundly kicked. so while I await the new tau codex I picked up the imperial guard because I like the models and the idea of a bunch of regular guys winning the day with nothing but a lasgun and a lot of chutzpa.

I thumbed through the "How to Paint Space Marines" book and thought the Black Templars looked kick ass.

For Army 2, I wanted to play orks so that I could loot rhinos and stuff for an ork army.

Sisters of Battle - because they are girls. I wish I had a more substantial answer, like admiring their unique faith point system (3e), the focus on mid-close range shooty, or anything else that I now find awesome about them. But realistically, I can't make that claim. When I was introduced to the hobby, I thought orks were hilarious, I thought I might go with nids because space bugs are cool, and I almost went Tau back when I thought they were all robots. But when I learned of the awesome space nuns, I couldn't be swayed. Sure their army list sucked in general, they didn't fight using tactics I generally would have preferred, their models were all metal and nearly twice as expensive. But DANG IT I wanted an army of hard as nails women.

Black Templars - They've been my favorite chapter ever since i started reading up on WH40K lore/fluff

orks- I play tested most armies and orks were the funnest / had the most room for being creative with modeling. haven't let me down since

space marines because I wanted to use the 3 sets of space marines I got with my 3 AoBR boxes

Elysians, because I loved the need for maneuverability and target priority when playing Tau, but gave up on the (IMHO) stale and limited Tau codex. Plus, my men are still expendable, so I have more fun even when getting creamed in a game.

Of course, I'm sure my love of Starship Troopers and my empathy for the poor sodding Marines in the Halo series lent some inspiration as well...

Plus, I routinely get to deepstrike 10ish demo charges when I play games. I'm going to work on greenstuffing a Shaquille O'Neil figure spiking a demo charge...

Necrons- I just started playing and I was looking for something that nobody else was playing for a just a different aspect. Plus I liked the look of them and I really got into the fluff once I bought the codex.
BA- I guess I was looking for something to tide me over until the Necrons enact their we'll be back rule from Games-Workshop...plus after reading some of the books I really got hooked on the fluff and then I bought the codex and really liked the paint schemes.

Black Templars because i love the way they look and perform on the board.

Also like the way they are different from all other SM armies

Eldar because I love the play style. Every unit has to support eachother, using speed to target an opponent's weak spots and relocating before they can effectively retaliate. Its extremely rewarding when it works.

I'm starting Chaos Space Marines because of the models. The Finecast Nurgle Deamon Prince is absolutely awesome model. The modeling potential is also worth it, its somehow very rewarding to take those goody two shoes space marines and rot them a bit .

Necrons first then CSM

Crons because they just gave off a vibe to me that they were the ones for me and eventually found that I consistently had good battles with a destroyer wing load out.

Chaos because I was bored and also tired of hearing everyone say that Daemon Prince w/ Lash x2 lists are the only competitive ones and wanted to prove em wrong. So far, I've had a blast with a TermiLord with Blissgiver and combimelta as well as JumpLord with twin Lightning claws, Mark of Khorne and melta bombs. Especially the Jump Lord

Space Marines. Don't really know why, though

IG because who doesn't love mass infantry and loads of tanks!?!?!?

Also love their background and how they are normal people fighting unimaginable horrors.

Word Bearers Chaos Space Marines. Their aesthetic appeals to me, and their book series really pulled me in. Their overall fluff in spectacular. Why would you want to play vanilla marines over Chaos Marines? Talk about boring.

Raven Guard:

I had the SM models from the AoBR box, and I really like the tactics of the RG. Fast moving and hard hitting in a very tactical way, unlike the BA way of just charging head first against the closest enemy. I like the use of scouts, and the general feeling of being sneaky before letting all hell brake loose.

I also like the paint job a lot, it is hard to do black armor without a lot of decoration, but I feel like I am making it work.

Fluff wise I also like that the Raven Guard are fairly independent, with each company being allowed to function independently. They also seem to have more of a "we are here to save people, not just kill the enemy" feel.

I started playing just over a year ago and started with necrons cuz it was the faction I was most familiar with via Dow and Terminator zombies was cool and I liked the fluff.

Then I started marines just because. That didn't last long.

I then went to tyranids. I love their story and the models that I did all came out amazingly well. I also hate doing vehicles, but I hate their current rules!!!

Im now working on grey knights as a competitive army and I've been thinking about picking up Orks as a second army cuz they're amusing and a fairly cheap faction to play.

1st - Orks because of vehicle converting possibilities
2nd - Tau because of the hammerhead and firewarrior models
3rd - Chaos (Emperors Children) MEQ that wasn't loyalists - Metal damonette models and defiler.
4th - Necrons - My wifes army, not really mine.
5th - Space Wolves - The only loyalist army I ever concidered doing. AOBR gave me lots of models and the new wolf pack box is just awesome.

Tau when i was young and didn't know anything. I went to a hobby show and it was the year they were released so it was being promoted pretty strongly. Years later i bought them.

Started CSM in 3rd edition cause of awesome fluff, plus they pwn... but since 4th us imma goin to start DE cause once again they're awesome, and the models are pretty sweet

Orks because they take a pile of scrap, and turn it into something useful. Can't help looking at that old mech (with kff) leaning on his wrench thinking " another pile of sh*t they expect me to fix) .

IG, because im into military history and the military and all. I love modeling and painting and theres so much choices with the Guard, i like the whole, hordes of fanatical guardsmen charging to die for the Emperor!, thing to. Im an Imperium fanatic as well

Thinking of doing Grey Knights, because the models look so cool. I am not a power gamer, so I will probably do something not as good but still aesthetically cool like Draigo and a bunch of Paladins

ORKS! they are a blast to paint, the codex has great fluff and when you play you never know how it will all turn out. They are the comic relief od warhammer 40k

I originally started out with Black Templars, since I picked up the 3rd Ed Starter set and was like "Oh, these guys are pretty cool." Then when I later purchased the Armageddon Codex for the BT rules, I discovered the Salamanders.

Soon after that my Templars turned very green I love the Salamanders dogma, tactics, fluff and all that good stuff.

Ultrasmurfs. My friend got me into the game through a mix of making Space Marines seem like awesome immortal badasses and DOW cinematic. I took the plunge and bought the 40k paint set with something like 5 paints and 5 battle for Macragge Space Marines. The painting guide that came with it told me how to attempt to paint the Ultramarines. So that's what they are. I like them too much to change them now.

I started with Tau back when they were just released because they had Mech suits and a very clean asthetic, and I wanted to be different (non-SM).

I come back to the hobby this summer and have since shelved my Tau after going 0-8. And you can't buy broadsides anymore.

So now I have a SM army after finally finding a chapter I like. But I have only won one game so far even with them lol.

Same here! I liked orks because of they got the coolest looking vehicles. And when a guy who works at my FLGS told me that there weapons only work because the think they do,
I was sold. I got the ork codex that same day

I chose the Ninth Legion, BA, mainly because my group of friends all got into the hobby at the same time and while I was being indecisive between IG and Tau, both were claimed. I then started reading up on the background of all the races and chapters and really liked the idea of a noble but flawed chapter. If I had to do it over again they would be Lamenters but even now that paint scheme is out of my league.

I started with Eldar because Dire Avengers looked awesome.

I sold my Eldar and got some Imperial Guard because I wasn't doing too well with Eldar, and thought a different army would help.

I sold my Imperial Guard and got Space Marines because one guy at my FLGS gave me a spare Space Marine for some reason, and I thought they looked nifty and also thought they'd help me win a little more.

At that point, one of my friends I played with asked why I switched armies just as I was getting good with my current one. So I stopped selling my armies at this point.

I started Tau because they were good guys and had cool tech and were good at shooting.

I started Orks because they're a funny army, and I love humor.

I restarted my Imperial Guard because I was apparently getting good with them - I think that was the reason, it's quite difficult to remember.

I started Sisters of Battle because they're all female, had cool minis, and the price gap between them and other armies had closed at the time, with the 50 CDN box of 10 Sisters compared to the 40 CDN box of 10 Marines or 20 Guardsmen or what have you.

I re-started my Eldar because the models are nice and aesthetically pleasing, and I was drawn back to my roots in WH40k.

I started Tyranids because of Starcraft 2's release and the hawtness of Infested Kerrigan - I even made a Kerrigan mini to use as a Hive Tyrant - and also because my brother gave me his Tyranids, and a friend also gave me his Tyranids.

I started Chaos Space Marines because my brother gave me his Chaos Space Marines.

I started Chaos Daemons on a whim.

These are all in rough chronological order, though I'm not sure whether Tau or the re-boot of IG should come first. And the Chaos Marines and Tyranids were simultaneous.

I chose Marines because they seemed pretty balanced and good for beginners. I really like Chaos Marines, Dark Eldar, Necrons and Tau though.

I chose Tau because they don't drive their tanks in close so they can hit things with their swords.

Orks because they came with AoBR and then Tyranids for their huge range of paint schemes and generally awesome (if slightly lacking) models.

Eldar upon the WD 127 release of the army list and models.
Had a fair few other armies, but always wandered back to eldar cos of the models.
Want a green tide/kan wall combo type army next as I miss the humour of playing orks :(

Black Templars since i really liked their background story, that and my friend already bought AoBR and the Black Templars upgrade kit for me as an advance birthday gift a few months back

Seriously, though. I love special rules and having something semi-unique. Few players had Necrons around here. I also was in love with the idea of getting new codex soon.

But, after I won a bit Necrons got a lot more popular and I don't like the rumors for them so far so....

I just bought $900 in Grey Knights because they're more competitive, have special rules on every page in the book almost, and are super elite (and really easy to paint).

Guard guard guard guard guard! and for a reason, it starts with death and is the most epic weapon in 40k

CSM becuase they're evil, mean, dirty and just downright rude. I also like feeling that vengeful spirit eminating from the rest of the SM chapters.

Blood Raven Space Marines, Dawn of War got me into the lore and fluff. They also don't need as many units so that means less time painting and a cheaper army (not points but actual money).

Although my favourite race is definately the Orks.

Space Marines because of the land speeder in the box set and Dark Angels specifically because terminator troops were awesome.

Night Lords, cause when i started they had stealth. There is nothing more disturbing then chaos marines with a 3+ cover save.

Been playing SM since Rogue Trader. I just like their aesthetic.

I started CSM because I won my FLGS' league and you can't win with the same army more than once so yeah...started a new army.

Most recently I started an IG army because I wanted to do an IDF-themed army and it just made sense. Plus I like the way they play.



Next is Necrons (if CC Necrons are doable) and then Orks.

IG, because I like tanks on top of tanks with more tanks on the side. Now I just don't hope they nerf tanks too much in the next edition of 40K xD

I nabbed Space Marines because I like the flexibility they bring and since I can't play a "we have reserves" army it was the only choice left that really appealed to me.
I probably will be starting a nids army in my spare time though.

I started building a Grey Knight army, a little over a month ago. I'm new to 40K, and TT gaming for that matter. I liked the small army factor, cheap and less to paint. Then I happened to be looking on Craigslist and found a jackpot of a deal, so now I have 2000+ points of Space Wolves. They are assembled and not painted, so I will paint them and learn to play as a wolf, and slowly build up my GK army. I want to get a Dark Eldar army as well.

Necrons, because I liked the aesthetic.

Egyptian - Check
Robots - Check
Undead - Check
Nightmare fuel - Check

Of course, they are now possibly the worst army in 40k ATM, so I went Orky. I liked the crazy-ass feel to them, and they seemed to be a pretty powerful army.

Imperial Guard, because I love history, World War I/II uniforms and the idea of unfathomable amounts of men being thrown at one point in the entire universe to make sure everyone in it dies a horrible, horrible death.

Also, the possibility of trench warfare.

Imperial Guard, because of how grimdark they are in my mind. With every battle I like to think of how insignificant it all would be in the 40K universe. The small force under my command, not even 100 men, compared to the entire Imperial Guard. Each painful sacrifice, each heroic triumph, it all means nothing in the vast expanse of the galaxy.

My first army was the Space Marines All because in 93 (or 92) I got to play Space Crusade on Amiga 500 and the board game And later on Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels. And after first Dawn of War was released, I got my first Space Marine box.

No, I actually play them because they were supposed to be the best army against GK and Black Templars as of 4th ed, which my good friend who introduced me to 40k played.

All games I play I generally either play polar opposites - Necromancers/undead or holy champions. Since daemonhunters were SO BLOODY EXPENSIVE to start over a year and a half ago, I went with Necrons as my first army. I learned pretty quick they aren't that spectacular of an army, however a very easy army to learn the rules with (since there isn't much 'modding' for the models as far as WYSIWYG goes).

I then picked up Tyranids to be more competitive and I love Zerg(starcraft) and the Alien movies. No real complaints other than a sub par codex, but even losing I enjoy playing them because I feel like a Dungeons and Dragons game master pitting enemies against my opponent... I know thats not the right mindset to have as you should play to win, but I mostly play to have fun...

I then wanted to get competitive and was going to pick up a space marine chapter since my local community has some space marine only tournaments, also anybody that can put on terminator armor can be pretty beastly, so it was going to be black templars , however two of my friends were already playing that so I was then going to go Vanilla/Ultramarine... then Grey Knights were announced... and that was the other niche I was looking for. A lot of people say they are cheese and all that, but I truly do enjoy them and their playstyle. The lore, while cheesy is still interesting to me. I actually do like that they will kill other space marine chapters to preserve their secrecy (for the greater "good" of course ).

Vanilla Space Marines...

They made it cheaper to jump in as a friend and I shared the cost of the AoBR box...

But I really love the idea of being the guys that show up when no one else can hack it, arriving in streaming mechanical meteors from the sky. Being able to create a Chapter and history really appealed to me as well.

CSM, specifically Iron Warriors. I love the background of the why and how for CSMs, then I was looking for a ranged army with big guns and voila, Iron Warriors.
