Yes Mongoose Publishing are doing Star Fleet Battles with ACTA rules... Out end of November.

Post by: Mad4Minis
That might get me interested. I like some of the SFB minis, but hate the rules. A far less complex rule set might get me into it.
Lets just hope that this is one of the projects Mongoose actually follows through with.

I've been looking forward to these rules for a while now. I really enjoy the whole Star Trek universe, but I've never been encouraged by what I've heard about Starfleet Battles. One of the most appealing things about this ruleset is that it looks to be a fleet scale game, instead of a one on one ship duel game.

Starfleet Battles is great if you love extremely detailed tactical simulators. It makes great battle reports because of the deep detail. However, as a game its morbidly slow, and quite boring unless your really into the style of game. If Mongoose actually finishes the project it should take off, as Trek folks are starving for a larger scale faster playing game.
Also, with the release of the new Star Trek clix game featuring newer ships Im betting there will be some fan made stats to go with the Mongoose game.

Yeah, and the Clix game is fun in its own right! The minis for it are pretty good, although I would be tempted to break out some of my old Star Trek MicroMachines to use as gaming pieces instead .

Im going to pick it up in a week or so. I want it mostly for the minis, though Im sure Ill give the full game a run or two. Ive given it a look on boardgamegeek.com and the minis paint up quite well.

The company that does SFB already does a quicker, "easier" version. Its called Federation Commander. No where near as complex as SFB and quite a fun game in its own right. One can run a 5+ ship per side fleet battle in about 2-3 hours.
I want to at least see the rules for ACTA SF. Having played SFB since it was a pocket game from task force games. Growing through the wierdness it became. Dropping it for years and then getting back in with FC, I cant see how this will work. I dont want the complexity, but my concern is the "feel" of the universe. It has its own unique feel, how Hydrans and Lyrans interact amongt each other is totally different from how The Federation and Klingons interact. I hope they dont dumb down the uniqueness of each faction and try to shoehorn into a much simpler system to just get it out.

If you click the above link they have posted the basic rules there.

The biggest thing to remember is that ACTA is NOT SFB or Fed Commander. The rules are going to play differently - a lot differently. Shields, for example, will likely not be arc specific but will be a single generic score for the whole ship. Damage will be against the ship as a whole, not system by system.
I'm excited about the release. Seeing that the folks at ADB are helping do the play tests helps make me confident you'll still get the flavor of the Starfleet universe with all the speed that ACTA offers.

I too have placed a pre-order. Reading the blog it interested me. I would lioke to see how they take the overly complex, and most times unneccesary, rules of SFB and turn it in to a decent minis games. like what I saw on the preview pages.

Yeah they are looking good. The other thing that is cool about this is there are no lack of great ST models out there to go and get if you don't like these. So really it just boils down to the rules.

Not bad for first casts...can see a couple missing chunks and flash. Some idea of size would be nice....are they the same size as the ADB stuff? I checked out the Mongoose rules...Ill pass. Im not a fan of a ton of special rules, and when I saw that a simple weapon such as phasers has several special rules, thats all I needed to know.
Ill stick with Full Thrust for my space ship combat needs. The big question right now is which ships...Im down to either the Mongoose Star Trek ships or Firestorm Armada ships....

Yeah to each his own but as a Trek fan not being able to bring full power to phasers would have been no fun so I can see how we would part ways on this.

@Mad4Minis: The new sculpts are a bit larger, at 1:2500 instead of 1:2400 for the old stuff. This post on TTGN has a pic comparing the two sizes:

That's not a bad thing, especially for someone who really has trouble pinning large metal models.
I'm really interested in Noble Armada. Are the ships plastic or resin? And how does game play work? I've ran through a bit of the rules, but is the flow a quick pace or can the game get really bogged down?

That I cant help you with, Ive never looked at it. Ive got the basic book for Starmada and Full Thrust. I prefer Full Thrust. Starmada does have some great points and looks good overall too.

Noble Armada Figs are all metal. Most of them are a single piece too so nothing to pin.
The game is fast. You can pound out a game with just the starter boxes in around an hour or two. Less if you skimp on the fighters and just play with the capitol ships.

I meant to post this a while back but kept forgetting it. The Original ADB Starline Minitures be they 2200, 2300 or 2400 are all 1/3788 scale. that scale was picked so that a Federation Connie would be 3 inches long and ADB just kept using it.
The new line of Minis will be in 1/3125 scale making the new resin ships roughly 120% bigger than the 2400 series. so as that picture points out a Connie is now just short of 3 and 3/4 inches (9.2mm) long. Some of the ships in the new line are getting adjust to fit the scale better for example the Texas Class Light Cruiser was enlarged to a more proper size as well as the Callahan Police Cruiser was adjusted a bit.
Edit: Wow my spelling is obtroushces....

Nope. They didnt listen. What they did was release the current line of minis (with ADB) to be the next scale size up, so they're noticeably bigger than the older 2400 series minis. Of course, there is nothing stopping you from using the smaller ships for the game. I bought both t he federation and klingon boxes to check them out, but might just trade/sell em off for the smaller ships anyway.
I'm hoping to get them assembled and painted in short order.
I've only read the rules, but they do seem to be different enough from Noble Armada to make it interesting (no regenerating shields, very little boarding action) if I read them right. I hope to get a game in soon.

The very last of our squadron pre-orders are going out today/tomorrow, so if you contact me with your order details (I am presuming you ordered them from us!) A trifle unfair - we did listen.
These are hardly 'over-sized' and you can easily find bigger starship models on the market. They are comparable to, say, the old Battlefleet Gothic range in size. Even the starbases that are coming will fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, and, being resin, they won't stress the bases.

Hey Ruckdog how does ACTA:SF stand up to Firestorm Armada?
32098
Post by: Comintern
Got in my first game of ACTA: Starfleet. Will have pics of my ships to follow. My friend was using the Klingon Squadron basic and I Was using the Federation Squadron w/ the New Jersey Battlecruiser.
Disclaimers:
First game of Starfleet Anything
Have only played Battlefleet Gothic.
The rules are farily basic, extremely basic when compared against BFG. Since it was the first time either of us had looked at it or played we chose not to use any of the special orders or really any of the advanced rules beyond Crew Quality.
We did a few things wrong. Like how to determine the Ships Crew Quality. (We now know the correct method). We also forgot about Seeking and were doing Drones wrong, but we managed. We simply were rolling to hit with those as well instead of treating them as automatic hits.
All in all though the damage tracking was fun. The different ship criticals that one can get added a new aspect to the game. Then in the end phase the chance to repair those. It really did feel like a star fleet ship engagement. We played three rounds in an Annihilation scenario and it took us about 2 hours. This included the pre-game quick & dirty explanation of the rules. With only one book only one of us had read it. Being unfamiliar things started slow but as the fleets closed on each other they picked up. In the end we each lost a ship before we both mutually agreed to disengage. (had other things to do and couldnt finish the game).
Hitting on a 4 up for everything stream lines it. Once you learn the arcs that each weapon system fires in will speed up combat as well. Our ships started taking less and less time to declare shots and resolve them.
Im not sure how all this is compared to Starfleet Universe or Noble Armada but coming from Gothic it was rather enjoyable. On top of that, since its Star Trek, it makes it even more enjoyable through its familiarity.
Only complaint really so far is the delay in the models! I want my Starfleet Federation Fleet box damnit!

Okay I have to report back you dakkites about my experience with Mongoose so after 3 month waits tons of unfulfilled dead lines and no responses to emails I got thorough to Matthew at Mongoose about my rulebook that was 3 months late and he kindly stated that he would send me something extra for my trouble and my book arrived and I got nothing extra no big deal but disappointing non the less. I contacted Matthew about this(and posted in this thread) and he said he would see to it personally and I waited 3 weeks got nothing and then I contacted him again this time he said email me back if you don't have something in a week.
That next week I received a box I opened it to find a box of ships for Noble Armada a similar game Mongoose produces that is has nothing to do with Start Trek and the Rule book so I got a Free game that's pretty freaking cool I must say! Even though it's not a game I wanted to pick up it was still a ton of free stuff and I thought it was really nice for Matthew to do that.
My Squadron boxes ordered early Dec 2011 that were finally arrived on Feb 6 2012 as I looked at my new minis they are well to be honest disappointing I realize I can't hold every miniature manufacture to the standards of a GW but this was way worse than fincast with mold lines bubbles and flash. So all in all I am really disappointed in Mongoose as a company. I kinda got the feeling that when I complained on Mongooses forums I was ignored but when I posted here things started to get way better customer service wise. Maybe I am wrong about this maybe it was just the timing or a random occurrence.
The game seems to be solid and really fun to play TBH and I am happy with that but if I continue to buy minis for this game I may look elsewhere a shame really I want to support the company that makes a fun rules set but in the end you can't depend on getting your order in any normal time frame and when the minis to arrive they are lack luster. This makes me want to pursue other avenues.

ADB still has their miniatures line on production. Smaller and in meatal, but they have all the ships you could want for the game. No need to wait or buy sub-par miniatures to play the game. Or you get some of the Megahex counters and use them until Mongoose can get their act together.

Sorry I missed your post earlier! I haven't gotten a chance to play ACTA yet, but looking over the rules I would say that the game is more akin to BFG than FA in moving and shooting. Also, ACTA is not a "bucket of dice" game, which is a big difference from both BFG and FA.

Hi. I'm new here, but here's some pics of my completed ACTA: SF miniatures and an after action report on my first game.
Some individual ships:

It's a fun game.
And for anyone who likes the firing arc base stickers, I do sell them...

Dude,
Awesome paint job man.
Any more Battle Reports?
will Try and get one up myself. However, our games run a little long so keeping track of them in the long run is difficult. (usually forget we are doing it haha)

Hi, no I have only played the one game.
Thanks. I'm getting the painting miniatures touch back after not doing it for about 25 years or so.
I've got 2 Fleet Boxes on order and will post more when I get some done.

Here's my latest creation: One of the new metal D5s.
I decided to do something different with the Klingon War hulls (F5W, D5, D5W). Reasoning that the Klingons would not bother to paint what they considered to be an attrition unit subject to high casualties, they just left the hull in it's natural metal color.
Certainly the new paint scheme will alleviate the apparently common inability of newer players to distinguish a D5 from a D7 or C7.
Thus, my new D5:
I used a grey primer with:
GW (Citadel) new paint called Leadbelcher, 2 coats.
Followed by one of GW's new shades called Nuln Oil, which did well as a shading wash. Touched up all the recessed/shadowed areas.
Followed by a drybrush of GW's Necron Compound.
What do you all think?

Looks good!
Sorry, lost this thread in the "re-alignment" BS.
Debating that with the new federation ships I have. Got our metal fleet box and started assembling them.
I must say the quality of these models as opposed to the originals are vastly improved!

BS?? It was lots of work!
Let us know if you have any thoughts/suggestions, I'm hoping this section will take off now that there are less games vying for this same space as they've been split off into their own forums.
I had some ships like these just over ten years ago, in high school... plastic, but made to look like metal (painted silver and washed). Wish I'd hung onto them to use for this!

My only complaint was the loss & separation of the Naval/Space & Other types. It makes sense in regards to the various game producers just will take some time to adjust to where things are now.
Didnt really mean that it was BS.
I wish I had saved all those old plastic starfleet ships that were sold when I Was a kid. Had a ton of those but no idea where they are now.

Yeah, mine looked just like these as far as I can tell, although probably made from a different material / perhaps not as high quality..
As for forum organization, we definitely considered keeping a "naval combat" space, but it seemed to make the most sense to break up by manufacturer for now... let's see how this goes once people get used to it.

I've got 5 games under my belt now. All in all the game system has improved, especially the new way drones are handled.
My current beef is the Klingons. They are so freaking hard to beat, what with their hyper-agility and double front shield. I've talked to numerous people who are both playtesters and serious players. They say that the Klingons are beatable with the right tactics, and to hang in there. The games will not only get faster, which I am seeing already, but you'll figure out how to beat the Klingons. So don't be discouraged as I was..
In the last game we tried Gorns vs Klingons, and it was about even when we had stop the game. Gorns used a BCH, CM, 2 HD, 4 BDD, losing a CM and BDD. Klingons used a C7, 3 D5W, 3 F5, 2 E4 and lost a D5W, E4 and a crippled F5. At that point we ran out of time, but it looked like the Gorns were going to get slaughtered the next turn. Later on, just out of curiosity I continued the game solitaire to see what would have happened. The Gorns took a beating, but were able to reload their plasmas and wail on the Klingons, killing another D5W and F5, having a CM and BDD crippled.
First time I'd even gotten a draw, and I didn't appreciate how devastating that second plasma salvo would be. This despite the 7 of 9 Klingon ships being on Intensify Defensive Fire and shooting down about 75% of my plasma in the first attacks. The second plasma attacks he got 4 of 7 ships on IDF and the plasma attack was more telling this time.
As for the miniatures availability, it's improving significantly. If you order direct from Mongoose, availability is better, though shipping is kinda slow. It appears that despite them having the casting done in Ohio (old Agents of Gaming facility I hear), they are shipping minis from England. So don't expect them to arrive quickly. However, if you want single ships ordering direct from Mongoose is the only way right now; ADB has a few singles but the selection is weak.
If you're more in a hurry, FRP games has Fleet Boxes and Squadron boxes for a good price, though they don't yet sell singles or the new Federation Reinforcements box.

I've just found this store that sells it, 'Infinity Games' along with a slight reduction on RRP - http://www.iguk.co.uk/categories/star-fleet-battles-198.aspx, mistakenly placed in the 'role playing' section of the website.
There are also a few bits and pieces up on ebay now.
Just going to put an order in for the book, looks like a fun game to play and will be nice to give my old BFG board a use for something!

The shipping costs direct from mongoose if you are in the US are really High I am going to wait until they get them in stores before I buy more. I want that Reinforcements box but I wont pay 65$ for it.

One thing that helps is that if you can hold off and make an order over $150, shipping is free. Not everyone can do this of course.

I think I know what the problem is - we have a US site as well (accessible by the Stars and Stripes at the top of the page).
If you go here;
http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/us/
You should find shipping a great deal cheaper to the US!

For anyone who is interested, a very large 60+ ship game was run at Nashcon this last weekend. I wish I could have attended.
