I have been reading quite a lot of WIP-Blogs over the last few weeks and I have decided to finally start my own.
I like modelling more than painting. Thats because I like to tell stories with the models, and a story is easier to tell with the pose and my conversions. Sure, painting is important and helps a lot, but I am a very lazy painter. It takes days until I am happy with the look of a troop-model
Lets show some models:
This is Rogbotz, my tankbusta-nob. I think he looks cool, but gamewise hes crap.
Look at the twin shoota As you can see, the metal mask on his face has killed his facial skin, so it has turned grey
These guys are three of my Lootas. They show the career of the average loota, from collecting the suff to destroying it in rage (apparently it didnt work )
Many more Orks will follow, but right now im a bit tired (its getting late here in germany) so I'll just show you the IG-pirates I started 2 days ago
These dudes are the first of my pirates. Note the custom melta on the right and the "sawed of Lasguns", wich will count as shotgus in the game
AAAND the Commandy Commpander (), Captain *fill in name* the awsome:
And this is why I love Orks. Each and every one makes me smile, sheer insanity but it works. The hovering deffgun is my personal favourite and I'm sure your opponents will enjoy spending as much time looking at your troops as they will playing against them.
Sweet paint jobs too, the limited palette works great and the small touches of colour in the eyes and the gorey klaw draw your eye nicely.

Bravo.
Thank you very much for liking my Orks
MOAR:
A killa Kan with a walking pose:
Two Kommandoz; the rigt one isnt wearing camo because he is the "distracion boy"
I hope you can see the details, I know black undercoat doesnt look too nice. But theyre up next on the paintin' shelf!
He has a story of his own: As you might want to know, I approach modelling a new dude very openly. I planned to build a mek that day, but as i picked up the chainsword i figured it would work great as trakk-units. I looked around until i found a spare boys-body, and from then on the bitz jut flew together. Done. I think he looks cool.
And here hi back:
And some more nobs. The thing on the left guys back is a Waagh banner. The right guys pose is intended to say something like "Wutz you doin' on da ground, Gruff? You dyin' or wat? Let me help you wif dat!"
GiraffeX wrote:Really loving your orks they all have so much character.
Looking forward to seeing the looted pink horror painted up, its such an excellent idea
Thanks for the post. You know, having people tell me they want to see my models painted really inspires me to do so. I primed him just before I started rthis thread , so he's on the painting shelf after the 3 Kommandoz
MrMerlin wrote:Sure, painting is important and helps a lot, but I am a very lazy painter. It takes days until I am happy with the look of a troop-model
He looks great! I don't think I quite agree on labelling yourself a 'lazy' painter.. Unless you mean in terms of really procrastinating it, the painting itself is great. I define a lazy painter as somebody that doesn't put the effort into painting their models anything above absolutely minimum standard, in which case, you certainly do not fall into that catergory

These are great! I LOVE the one that's cracked the sooks and destroying his gear, haha

Thank you very much for the reply! With labeling mysef lazy I meant to say that I dont paint much; It literally takes me weeks to finish a project. BUT, I decided to paint more to keep this blog runnning
Dabedman wrote:All of these look awesome, man! Cant wait to see how this project turns out, modeling- AND painting-wise.
subscribed, by the way
Thank for the post! BTW, my painting shelf got a little messed up; while I was waiting for a wash on a kommando to dry, I figured I could try some new technices on my guardsman. I ended up painting the Human intead of the Ork. Ill try to post him tomorrow or the day after, and next on the shelf is the Pink horror Loota, becaue someone wanted to see him painted
That use of the chainsaws is inspired I'm going to have to try it yself at some point the painting is characterful and the conversions dynamic. I'd suggest you look at Monkeytroll's work for some great inspiration!
I dont usually follow Ork threads but these conversions are really good and characterful. The painting is top notch as well and really does the models justice, I especially like all the kill decals you are adding to your guns and rockets. The colours scheme is not to bright and rust covered as alot of Ork armies tend to be. Look forward to seeing more!
Simplest way for good black skin is Dark Flesh and a Brown Ink Wash. The scheme to my mind is too Nurglitch. I can't imagine pirates having rusty guns as they'd need functioning weapons to keep them alive. The Orangey brown and the green makes a nice contrast though.

thanks for the advice! btw, the guns arent rusty; they are merely dirty and scratched, and i tried to show that these damages just came from the current campaign. and ill try your way to paint skin!

oh wait, i was talking about the ig-guys and you were talking about the orks. oops.
Awesome!
Perhaps the kustom force field could make anyone inside get a 3+ cover or something because it's so big? After all, the bigger the better!
Subscribed, and can't wait to see more of the models, especially painted as this brings them to life.
BTW, what's the writing on the base of the building? I can't quite see all of it. Something about 'listen, gud! wanted: baff the looter for stealing the boss's sho...'

Thanks for the reply!
its "for stealin' da bosses shoota"
and I have made up alot of rules like that (like rolling eacht turn and on a one it blow up etc), but noone agrees to use them in a game
BTW, to all of you:
pleasepleaseplease go to the gallery and put some votes on my pictures, because theres nothing happening there...
i really like the ork truck, enough to loot the idea and paint it blue, but im not so kean on the giant kff. Maybe if it had bigger pylon bits and more worky wires

Out of curiosity, what's your ork skin recipe? It's looking good.
Thanks for the reply, I think I will fix some more Kommandoz once Im done with that loota...
My skin recipe did take quite a while to make up, and its always improving. Thats how im currently doing ork skin:
Undercoat with Dark angels green
First layer Snot green (you dont paint that in the recesses)
Second layer Goblin Green (paint it as lines, to get the look of muscles)
to this point, i have copied Cattatafishs reciepe, wich is here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/394533.page after that Ill put on a wash of thrakka green, and after that Ill do a third layer of goblin green over the older layer, wich will be darkened by the wash.
If it still doesnt look enough like sking then, Ill do this: thin down some gobling green (it must be really thin) and put it on the skin. It will go into the recesses, but also cover the rest. Now, since I dont want it in the receses, Ill take a medium sized brush and use that to soak up the watery green paint in there. I always have to hurry there, to be done before the color is dry.
Then im usually happy with the result.
That trukk is great. Though the passangers will be a but out in the open. But I think it looks great anyway. What do the drivers care for hangers-on anyhow
That terrain looks cool. I think it could use some more worky bits and wires, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. I think you should try using it as a +1 to whatever cover save area terrain gives you. For bigger games use the roll to see if it blows up.
these two are my most recent paintjobs, but the lootas still needs some work....
Some tankbustas i built, going to be painted soon:
And I also finished two more IG-pirates. The guy on the left is Manfred, middle guy is Bert, and the dude on the right is called Santa Saws!
Automatically Appended Next Post: More shots of Pirates:
This is Santa Saws; he lost both his arms in battle, so he got two bionic ones instead....
today my ork army is one year old! 'cause last year i got my first models for my 16th birthday (a box of Kommandoz and a box of boys!) while I was spending the winter in sweden with my family. A good friednd of mine (Admiral Omowery here on Dakka), who had already been wargaming for years then, made my mom buy the orks. Thank you very much!
I had actually painted one Ork by then, two years before in a GW. Sadly though my first 20 or 30 Orks look very, uhm, well, crappy, to be honest Those were the days when I could paint a model in half an hour and be happy with the result.....shame over me.
But even though i made quite some hints on what I need the last few days, my brother didnt seem to understand them. No Orks today...
Somehow it was very comforting for Private Fred Benton to have a tight grip around the handle of an assault cannon. It made him feel safe. Though with a bunch of Grey Knights on your heels, you never were safe. An open battle would mean certain death, and the men hiding out in the burnt remains of a forest knew that, they had seen the Space Marines fight. It was tough to see your former allies turn against you, especially if the allies in question are the Imperiums finest warriors. They had armor with wich you could swim through a lake of lava unharmed, and guns that could tear apart a building. They were the gods on the battlefield.
That was why the remains of the 42nd Sauvagian wouldnt give them a battlefield. Rather a forest full of booby traps and desperate soldiers. The Knights had suffered even more casualitys then the Sauvagians, only a handful remained. A hundred Guardsman could beat a handful of Grey Knights, Fred thought, provied they got the time to set up an ambush. And they had gotten that.
Finally the waiting was over, Dogbreaths vox told them. So Sarge Kurz had managed to get the Greys on his heels. The plan was for Kurz and his squad to attract their attention and lead them towards the barrel. The barrel had once contained gas, but now 3 demolition charges, half as dozen meltabombs and a igniter controlled by a remote control filled the insuspicius piece of metal, half obscured by branches and mud. Kurz' men were past it now, still far ahed of the foe, running south. Freds team hid a few hundred meters west of the barrel, the other team east of it, and the Inquisition was coming for them from the north. Kurz had tried to make sure that the shortest route for his hunters would lead them over the barrel, but they were too far of anyway. Judging by their current route, they would pass some 100 meters east of it, so the detonation wouldnt harm them too badly. They had to be led over it.
Fred knew what he had to do. He made sure that the ammo-chain was in its place and the tripod of his assault cannon was properly adjusted, before he switched the six barreld monster on. It began to turn faster and faster, gaining momentum. The sound it made turned from a slow hollow humming to a high-pitched whine, and that told Fred he could pull the trigger. When he did, he thought he'd turn deaf. The gun roared like hell as the ammunition chain raced into its side, and white flames exploded out of the muzzle. He could not see anything, but he held it leveled at where he thought the foe. After near a minute, the barrels were bright red and steaming, and the bullets had run out. The air was full of biting somke, but he could see them. They were alive but for the one who had'nt worn a helmet. Fred knew better than to imagine how his face looked now.
But he had succeded. They were coming for him now. Bullets were tearing apart the trees around him, but he lay on his belly and didnt move. Then came the detonation. The shock wave pressed the breath out of his lungs, and it was so loud he tought the planet itself was be torn apart. A few moments after the echoes had faded, rubble, earth and other things started rainig dowon on them. When they finally dared to rise and look at the place where the barrel had been, they knew they had won. There was nothing to be seen. A huge crater marked the place, filled with ashes and molten stones. There were no more Grey Knights who could harm them now.
As the others danced and hooted happily, firing shots in the air and hugging each other, Freds thoughts were on he battlefield of yesterday again.....
They had been all laughther and jokes when they had marched into the belly of the gigantic Space Hulk, wich had been there bring them to an unknown destination. They had been boausting about how many foes each of them would kill, and how the Imperium would praise their victorys. That was different now that they had arrived, because battle was no fun at all. Especially not against the vile servants of Chaos, who could take on ten man each with horrifying ease. Instead of laughter, the cires of the wounded and dying now filled the air, and the jokes had given place to pleas for mercy.
But the warriors of Khorne would have none of it. The word „yield“ was all but unknown to them, and nearly all men in the regiment knew that. Yet some fools still hoped to be spared for throwing down their weapons, but they learned otherwise in a manner of a few seconds. Others were smarter and hugged a grenade when the red devils piled into their trenches, taking one or two with them with a small but powerful detonation, but that required a kind of courage only few possesed. Those who tried to fight in melee, clumsy lasgun trying to parry the blows of leathal hellblades and diamond-toothed chainswords, lost their lives as quickly as those who fled the trenches and were seen by a Comissar; incidents like these were marked by the loud barks of bolt pistols.
This war against a small host of Chaos Space Marines, wich were supported by the even viler Deamons of the warp, was worse then a nightmare. The planet wich they were on had to be defended against the invaders. The enemy objective was not to win the planet, nor was it anything with reason. It was merely to cause fear and terror, death and destruction.
The man were being wasted defending hopeless positions, and the Generals in their backfield-trenches would not hesitate to send a hundred poor souls to a certain death, if that action had the chance of maybe killing a handful of the ones on the other side of the battered and damaged defence-lines; In the HQ-tent you didnt count the lives of men, but of platoons, and many soldiers knew that now. Morale had hit rock bottom weeks ago, and it seemed as if someone had brought a jackhammer, because it was getting worse all the time.
The only chance you had to kill one of the bastards was to shoot them while they ran towards you from afar, and even then it took the fire of a dozen lasguns to bring one down, shots bouncing off the thick iron hides of the deamons and the admatium suits of the Space Marine traitors all the same. One man was worth nothing in this war, and they were very well aware of that. Fancy guns, on the other hand, could actually waste a few of the suckers before they reached you, if you knew how to use them. Every man had been trained to use all different kinds of leathal contraptions, ranging from simple grenade and missile launchers to deadly meltas and extemely dangerous plasma weapons, wich often malfunctioned and turned the wielder into boiling puddles of gore that looked just like the foes who were hit by it before the weapon overheated. But as much as every man wanted to carry a „special“ gun, or be put in a weapon team to man the really big ladies, the supply was very limited. Only those few who had proven themselfes worthy were given the rare honor of wielding one, and they were the ones who saw to the enemy casualitys, few as they were.
But those chosen soldiers died all the same when the enemy reved up their chainsaws and jumped into the trenches, and that left the odd grenade launcher or Boltgun ownerless. That was how Fred got his assault cannon. The comissars did not care who was responsible for the heavy weapons, and taking them from the fallen without permission was about the only crime you didnt get shot for. Because it required at least two pairs of arms to carry it around, the Platoon commander had attached another man to the cannon, a young chap called Carl. He was a coward though, so whenever it came to actually firing the gun while enemies were around, he curled himself up and waited until the battle was over. It was a miracle that he hadnt been shot for that jet.
He was hiding and shivering again now, while Fred put on his earmuffs. A Vast horde of Deamons and Chaos Marines was closing on them, and death hailed on their evil from all sides. It was not enough though, and Fred knew that his six-barreled friend wouldnt make much of a difference. Somnehow he wasnt afraid of death right now. At least he would take some of the fethers with him, he thought. But as he fired up the cannon and began to send some deamons back to the warp, a metal Gunship flew over their heads and landed right in the middle of the approaching tide.
Out of it jumped Space Marines, but Fred couldnt quite tell from wich chapter they were. They wore bare metal aromor, and he didnt know their insignia. As a child he had learned a lot about the Space Marine chapters, so he was confused now. They began slaughtering their way through the deamons the same way as the deamons were about to do it with him and his companions, but then, a huge monster erupted from the ground. It looked suspiciously like the other ones, save the fact that it was over 30 feet tall. It seemed to Fred that Khorne himself had simply adjusted the odds.
It fell on the Marines with a booming warcry, swinging a huge sword of molten iron, and began to play with them. It cut three man in half at once, squished another one under his clawed foot and ripped of the heads of two more. At the end of the fight, only 6 of the Marines remained of the 20 that had come. A hit in the face with a gigantic thunder hammer had put an end to the giant Deamon, and the rest of the horde was dealt with with ease. One after one, the Marines closed the invisible warp-portals that had been sending waves after waves of Deamons at them, supported by the Sauvagians. The endless battle was finally over; The marines had accomplished in a few hours what a full regiment of Guardsman had failed to do in weeks. Now the regiment was down to a quarter of of strengh, the rest killed in the numerous battles.
Later that day, the leader of the Knights questioned their Commander. A handful of servitors wrote down all the words that were said, and the questioned man seemed more than uneasy. Fred was watching from the distance, and he could'nt quite understand the words that were said. He did however get one sentence, because it was delivered in a loud, commanding voice. „We are done here, brothers. Purge this regiment!“
At first he failed to understand the meaning of that, and then the Grey Knights opened fire. They harvested their one-time allies like weed, cutting them down with their murderous guns one squad at a time. In the end, only Freds platoon had managed to escape. They went into the burnt forest....
Thanks for all the great comments guys. I really appreciate them!! It keeps me working. Right now its 3 lootas and a tankbusta being team-painted. Maybe im done tomorrow!
Well, mr.merlin I must say that I am impressed. I had seen that ork big rig all over the gallery, but I had no idea that it was yours! Great job, and thanks for supporting the sinking club!
Looks like I'm a bit late to all of this, first off... Rogbotz's gun, how'd you hake it? It looks awesome. The IG pirates look impressive too, what's Captain ___ The Awesome holding?
The models look great and your painting is impressive!
An idea for the trukk, chicken wire around the sides, to keep da boyz in? Easy thing that'll look nifty.
The force field tower was a great idea, I like how you made it, Should make indiscriminate rules for it though, so it helps and harms everyone equally. Lastly, the pink horror burna is epic, great idea. My bad for the long post haha This is something I deffinetly plan on following though
I'm digging the conversions and depth of character you're putting into your models dude!
Those orks are awesome. The snub nosed lasguns are a great idea. That ork trukk makes me want to paint it red & blue as an optimus prime ork trukk.
Are those SW heads on your Pirate IG? I'm doing something similar for a Fenris/Viking IG, check out the fantasy chaos marauders, swap their arms with catachan lasgun/weapons and you've got a fairly unique force.

you're never late on a blog, thank you very much for the comment. About the trukk; i will actually build a ram and some kind of armor-plating to pin on; so i can switch between trukk and battlewagon
edit:
wait, i havent answered your question about rogbotz' gun... its made completely from the nobs sprue; I cut up the two kombi rokkit-launchers and filled the gap with a choppa piece.

WOW!
Ok, if I was half as good as that as converting, I would be the best at my store by a long way!
Can't wait to see what you do with those heads. Should be good, watching the new conversions rolling in.

why thank you, i guess i should come by your store one day
For now ive "only" done more ig pirates, pics tomorrow!
Love the Fire Dragon head!
The weapons look amazing, make sure you let them stand out when you paint them.
Also, the ork is great, as seems to be normal with your models.
Have you ever read the old Ork codex: Freebooterz? It actually had rules for using Renegade humans along with Orkish pirates. I thought that this might interest you, considering your two projects are along those lines.

OK guys, right now im busy writing more fluff, so i figure ill be able to post it in two days or so. Im also busy painting two more lootas, and a nob after that. Ill try to give the nob as much attention as possible, so that'll take a while.
Your comments really keep me woking, mates! Thanks!
Sorry for the delay, the story will take a little more time; i guess ill be done on the 2nd though. the two lootas are nearly done, but i modeled one with an arrow in the knee; you know Skyrim, right? "I uzd ta be an adventurer like you, but den i tooks an arrow in da knee"
Here is the Loota I finished, though his gun int done yet....
With Skyrim and the internet around, I had an idea! Why not have a "guardman" ork with a knee wound? I looked for a model wich would fit the theme, and yound it next to my painting palette i present you:
the fluff is kinda done, will post it in a few hours.....
Hi Mr Merlin.
I find your orks are funny. The last one is a tough guy, he keeps watching in his binoculars while he has some sharp thing stucked into his knee. ^^
I really like the loota with the eldar weapons too.

One question though : don't you paint the bases ?
hey there, thanks for the comment.
well, id like to paint the bases, but i've left my white glue in sweden the last time i was there visiting a friend. That was in Sepember......
so i cant glue sand on them.... :( Ill have to wait til we're in sweden again. Good thing is, might be we're going this month
Man, your conversions definitely RULE!!!! the loota jumping onto his broken equipment kicks ass! also the last ork, sporting the field glasses is pretty creative!
@zariart, riffgott an hmelrose: Thanks for the kind comments!
fluff got somewhat delayed, because i read over it again after completing it and i didnt like it at all. I rewrote most of it now, the rest will follow soon.....
this is part one:

They went into the burnt forest....
this is still full of grammar mistakes, ill fix them soon!
The Rough Raiders; Chapter Number Two
The 3rd was the last platoon that remained of the 712th Sauvagian Infantry Regiment, and it was nearly down to half strenght. The men were starved and exhausted, full of fleas and lice and other small multiple-legged pests, and half of them were wounded or had caught something. Three had died a day ago from Gutrot, and the stench of old sweat clung to every one of them.
But for the first time in weeks, nobody tried to kill them. That would soon change though, would the Imperium ever discover what they had done. And even if the Inquisition didn't find out, they propably would be purged anyway, since that was what the Astartes had been trying to do when the Guardsman had ignited the dozen meltabombs and demo charges suffed into that rusty gas-barrel.
Nobody knew why they needed to be purged though, but Fred was sure it was beause they had seen something they werent supposed to see. If it were the Demons or the mysterious power armoured men, nobody could tell.
The comissars had all died but for one, Mauritus von Reichfeld. He had'nt been with the others when the Comander had been questioned, so they hadnt been able to kill him. He had been in a scary mood since then, because his oh-so-beloved Imperium had abandonned him. Having served it all his life with unquestioning loyality, it must have been a hard blow for him when they had tried to terminate him. He spent his days walking in circles or leaning against a rock, filling the air around him with silence, or sometimes muttering something to himself. It ended when he suddenly drew his heavy Bolt pistol, executed the three soldiers nearest to him while shouting „Traitors“ at them in a high, shril voice, before he blew himself away with the last round in his gun.
When only a terrible mess remained of their last loyal man, something changed in the rugged survivors. With the respected and feared Lord of Reichfeld about, they still had felt some measure of guilt about killing the Marines, but they had had no choice but to defend themselves. Now they only felt relieved that the thread was terminated, and they all agreed on one thing: They would not return to the Imperium.
That descision soon led to a new problem wich needed to be solved. Where to go? Staying on the world they were on right now was not an option; It was burnt and dead, and soon the Inquisition would order it to be exterminated.
But where should they go? And how should they get there? Sure, the transport hulk was still where it had been all the time, 20 miles to the south. But the crew would not as much as fart if the order didn't come from „above“, as the Imperial Headquarters were usualy referred to.
„We have to take it by force“, Platoon Commander Mance decided after a few hours of consideration. „'cause they'll sure as hell not let our sweat-stinking arses in there if we ask politely!“
Agreement was audible all over the camp. „But how do we get in? As far as I know, they've nailed everything close. Might be we've seen the last of them when we left for here, and they've been ordered to abandon us“ Gruff shouted. „Naw, more like the Astartes were planning to visit them too, just we messed their plans up a little“ someone else said, his words accompanied by his comrades' laughter. „So I think they're still there, waiting for orders that won't come“
„But imagine the arses in HQ know what happened to the Grey Knights“, Mance said. „If they learn that this planet has been cleaned up by us, there's no reason for them to wait with the big bomb any more. Then there'll be no more ship, nor anyone to get abord. And if we don't act now, theyll sure as hell find out that more happened to the Astartes that a broken comunication device. They'll come sniffing around, find us and put an end to our small rebellion. And if we manage to defeat them, we're due for the bomb. So we'd best storm that fething ship NOW!“
Storming the hulk would prove to be quite hard a thing to do, because blowing a big hole in its side and walking in would'nt serve. If they damaged it, they'd have to repair it too in order to use it, and they had neither the time nor the knowledge to do that.
The job had to be done secretly. Someone would have to sneak in and open the gates, and they had to leave some of the crew alive, or there would be nobody to pilot the ship.
„Who's gonna take that damn ship then? Someones got to do it!“ Gruff shouted again. That made Fred wonder. There were no „leaders“ left among the survivors, save Mance, and HE wouldn't go sneaking into some ramshackle air-conditioning system. There was Sarge Kurz, to be sure, but Mance disliked the man. He often srewed up, like last time when he had to lead the Knights over that barrel. If it hadn't been for Fred, the whole story would have ended with a pile of dead guardsman. While he looked around for another man fit for the job, he saw that Mance was looking at him.....
The night was as dark as it would get, and Fred Bentons team was as close to the ship as they would get. Backs pressed against the gigantic hull, they slowly moved towards the closest of the many „feet“ of the hulk. These monstous pillars were placed all around the structure, stabilizing it. Everytime the ship landed, they would grow out of the hull, one foot at a time, accompanied by a deep, rumbling sound.
Freds team reached it in a few minutes. It was about a hundred feet to the hole form where the foot had come out, and where things come out, others can go in.
The surface of the structure was not flat, it was full of cables and giant rivets, wich would made it very easy to climb.
Fred had been given command over these ten man because Mance had the imression of him being somewhat smarter and more courageous that some others. After looking at „weird“ Jake and some other questionable characters among them for a little while, Fred agreed with him in that matter. He had even killed an Astartes by himself, thought that had been mere luck. And besides, anyone can pull the trigger of an assault cannon. Still, he had killed a Space Marine, and men who can kill Marines can also take a Hulk at night, Fred hoped.
So there he was, taking a hulk at night. Or climbing up its stabilizing feet at night, to be sure.
The taking itself hadn't yet begun.
Up they went, eleven man in black clothes, with blackened faces and loaded guns on their waists and backs. Fred had picked a shotgun and a silenced pistol, and so had the others. In addition, Hurf had been given a flamer and Bud had a whole backpack filled with al kinds of explosives.
By the time they went past the hull and into the engine room that worked the stabilizer, Fred ccould see the first light of the new day. The days were short on this planet, one lasted only a few hours. Light was the last thing they could have wanted outside, but that didnt matter now that the firts part of the job had been done. They were in the ship.
Sure enought, there was a kind of door to the maintainance tunnel, only it was sealed from the inside.
There went a krak grenade, its flat, magnetic side clinging tight to the door, timer set for 20 seconds. The men huried into cover, lying flat on their bellies, hands crossed over their heads. The explosion left a peeping noise in Freds ears, and had propably alarmed every single man in the ship. Well, that couldnt be helped. Soon, someone would come snifing around, expecting some kind of broken generator. They were in for a surprise, Fred would make sure.
He hoped the ship was as badly guarded as Mance had told him it would be. The Platoon leader was sure of having heard some high-nosed nob with a commanders badge ordering evrey available man into the trenches, even the ones stationed on the ship. Only a handful were to remain, just enought to maintain the most important machinery and press a few buttons to open the gate.
Fred figured there to be about five to give the orders and pilot the hulk, and another 15 to do the work. That was the generous guess, because judging by the size of the thing, „a handful“ could also be fifty men.
But even if it were fifty, Freds team had the surprise effect and the guns. Most of thes ships guns were fixed onto the hull, to drop the odd bomb, missile or spray of large calibres onto some advancing foe, but inside were ony old men, mandatorily armed with laspistols. After all, the young lads had all been herded into the trenches to delay the advancing horde with their deaths.
The ripped open door led them into a tight tunnel, and soon there was a crossing. To the left was a ascending stair, to right there wasnt, so left they went. Fred ordered Bud to set up a frag mine, in case someone came from the right, looking for the source of the explosion. With the mine waiting on the crossing, nobody would be able to spot their custom entrance hole and ring the alarm afterward.
The team moved up the stairs as quiet as they could. Fred could hear someone approaching, so he grabbed his silenced gun and ordered the rest of the team to stop moving. When the man came around the corner, tool box in hand, Fred took him out with two well placed shots.
On they went, moving towards the main gate. If they managed to open that, the other 30 men who were hiding about one mile from the ship, could come in as well.
They only had to remove the resistance first and capture the captains, and they had to hurry up with that; soon, someone would miss the man he just shot, and then the alarm would go off.
Fred led his men further up, intedning to capure the valuable individuals fist, before either wasting or capturing the others.....
this i how far i've come, will probably write the end tomorrow....
Nice stuff Mr Merlin! they all look fantastic! I'd like to see some paint slapped on that Ork dread of yours? any chance soon? :-) he looks hard as hell and hard to escape!
If i knew what Skyrim was then i'd be able to comment on your 'Guardman' but as far as a model goes i like him! good painting so far too! all your stuff is really inventive and always give people something to pore over, i look forward to seeing what else you do soon!

Ill paint the dred sooner or later, but first ill do a nob and a kan, and some ig pirates. And the trukk
Skyrim is a computer game by "The elder Scrolls", and the Guardmen always tell you that they also were adventurers like you once, until they took an arrow in the knee...... all of them.....

gramma nazi-ing over, I love the backstory! can't wait for more!
id like to run spell check over it, only ill have to get it in engl first. I only have something like that in german.....
mingus89 wrote:Love both armies! cant wait to see the painted trukk.
ok, ok, ok- you are the fith guy to ask me to paint it, maybe i hould actually do it soon .
Good Fluff! I got the impression that the men work together without actually liking eachother, a good feel for a pirate like crew.
My fluff is like yours in the sense that they are forced to fight by an uncaring imperium, I like the concept
New stuff all looks good and your fluff is well written and different. Cant wait to see those new ork heads being used they will look great. I see your raiding your bro's bits box well for eldar parts. They come with a crazy amount of spares. I've been looking at the rumours and the Eldar may finally be getting an update in 2012! So the old blog might have to be dusted off and restarted. Now get that dread painted! Good work.

Thanks for the kind reply Icarium. My brother has finally bought some Wyches and is now building banshees the way you did!
my bro finally decided to build his wych models (wich will be used as either banshees or harlies, he isnt sure yet)
I saw my chance in this and started begging him for a spare, and after only half a day of theatening to beat him up, he gave me leave to build one He wasnt happy with my first attempt, and had me cut the bitch up and build her again, but now shes done (the one on the right is mine)
when hes done building them, he will most likiely paint them (really?), but he isnt sure how. Either as harlequins, or as banshee. Or in his craftworls theme:
thats one of his guardians:
maybe you can give him some advice? how should he paint them?
I'll upload my nob soon, and turn to either the trukk or the dred then. Or build a biker boss....
I'd go for the banshees. I like their colour scheme whereas the harlequins look a bit OTT, even when painted by 'Eavy Metal.
The guardian colour scheme looks fine, but it's good to have variety in an army.
I would also sy that you should paint them as banshees. They don't look enough like Harlequins for me.
Using the Wytches will allow you to get a very dynamic unit.
BTW, the color scheme for the guardians is nice, I love the soft blue with the orange that brings a stronger tone.
Your orks are Awesome! I hate the standard loota models and yours have given me a whole load of ideas Also your kommandos look so good you have set my mind on kitbashing the rest of my squad haha

TaWaaaaagh wrote:How did you paint those backpacks on page 1? They look great.
this one?:
i picked scorched brown, orkhide shade, knarlock green and bleached bone, and painted random stipes over the otherwise finished model (done in knarock green all over)
The bone was used to lighten up the other colors by mixing it into them. Thats on the clothes. The backpack just got some brighter green stripes (i think it was knarlock green and bone)
here is the nob i have been painting over the lat few days. I am a very slow painter, it took me way to long!
I tried out a new skin tone by adding brown to the greens. I like how it turned out!
For the base i used expenive wood glue, but i guess its just the same stuff as the white glue thats rotting in sweden..... damn me!
The new ork looks good I really like the loin cloth. Your bro should definately paint them as banshee's. I like his colour scheme does he have his own blog? If he wants to add loin clothes like mine then he should use this guys method for making the cloth http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/239505.page its much better looking than mine and I wasnt that happy with how mine turned out. Makes me wish I had bought my eldar with me to Nam.
Great work, MrMerlin. I am darned impressed with your creativity and talent. You seem to have the right attitude, in which storyline and character trumps simple tabletop dominance. Your fluff is great and the models are fun and impressive. I tend to be a simple lurker, but your work made me log in and comment. Really well done.
Thanks a lot, I'll tell my brother. Sadly he does'nt have a blog. he does'nt even have an account! I don't know why he refuses, but I'll talk him into it!
@The Faded
Thanks a lot for your comment! You saying that you only post very seldom really makes it an honor! Thanks!
I'm sorry to tell you that i wont be able to do anything from thursday till sunday, cause I'm away with my Orchestra, playing the saxophone .
But i did start work on a killa kan today, and I'll finish it next week. Then you'll get the dred and the trukk!
OK, i'm in denmark now. I did start work on a kan at home, but i didnt bring it. Did bring 4 orks though, and i guess ill try to paint them as good as i can, and then share them. Will do the big stuff at home in 2 or 3 weeks.....

At first he failed to understand the meaning of that, and then the Grey Knights opened fire. They harvested their one-time allies like weed, cutting them down with their murderous guns one squad at a time. In the end, only Freds platoon had managed to escape. They went into the burnt forest....
this is part two:
Spoiler:
Fred led his men further up, intedning to capure the valuable individuals fist, before either wasting or capturing the others. Maybe they'd even be willing to join the traitor platoon, who knows?
The team moved higher still, getting closer and closer to the controll room where the capatain should be. It was the mans duty to always be ready and close to the command bridge, so he slept and ate there, never leaving his post exept when ordered to.
That would make him easy to capture.
On their way up, two other men passed the team. They were both old, well past sixty and not armed, so fred ordered his men to take them alive.
„What? Hey!“ was all the two could say before they were knocked to the ground, tied together with some nylon rope. They got some cloth to eat, that would keep them quiet. Marv stored them in a tool locker nearby.
Fred told his men to remember which locker it was, so the two could be found again later. Time to move on.
When they finally got to the upper level, their luck suddenly ran out. Someone must have found the door or the dead guy, and sounded the alarm. Every crewman would rush to the main hall now, take one of the lasguns from the storage container, and then they'd comb the ship in groups of at least ten men each. Though if the renegades were lucky, the ship only held enough crew for 3 teams.
Around the next corner, they finally found the entrance to the command segment. The door was massive, and would not be broken easily. They could slap a meltaomb on it, to be sure, but that would cause some serious damage not only to the door, but also to much of the surrounding, including Freds team and the captain. Meltabombs were murderous devices, capable of degrading the most gigantic battle tanks to molten slag and steaming piles of rubble.
No, a demolition charge should suffice. Bud took his time to attatch it properly, then set the timer. They quickly left the tunnel and took cover in an adjacent one, cowering on the floor behind a corner.
The detonation was brutal. The shock wave hit the men violently, driving the breath from their lungs and leaving a painful stinging in their ears. It took several moments for the dust and rubble to settle, and the guardsman waitet another half minute before they struggled back to their feet.
The door was gone, as were the nearby walls and much of the floor. Fred could see the room below them, and the ones revealed by the missing wall. The section they wanted to acess was also open to them now, though some climbing was nescasary. One man nearly fell down into the room below, but he managed to grab a water pipe wich poked from the torn wall.
Safely in the captains quarters, Fred repeated the command he had given before; „If any of you gaks lose a shot at the captain or the other men in here, I'll blow your brains out myslef. They wil be taken alive! Do you understand?“
„Yep“, „will do that, Fred“ and other similar expressions were audible. Fred was annoyed. Back when they had been soldiers of the Imperium, the understanding of an order would have been expressed with a unison „Yes, Sir!“. Did the man think that with abandoning the Imperium, they had also abandonned discipline?
„What was that? Do you understand!“
This time he raised his voice considerably, intending to inflict fear and respect. It was better to be feared than liked as a leader, that much he had learned from the Comissars.
Suddenly, the soldiers remembered the phrases that had been drilled into them for months back in their training days, and they replied with the term Fred wantde to hear.
„Yes, Sir!“ they said, obedient.
The words had scarcely passed their lips when the captain appeared in the back of the room. A middle aged man with a snobby look, he had two crewman at his back, one of them a muscular brute.
„what the hell are you suckers doing here?“ the bear demanded, and the captain drew his sabre. „Who dares enter my ship without my leave? I'll gut you scumbags!“
Dripping of arrogance, pride and self-importance, he waved his sword at the intruders and charged, his companions at his heels.
At once, Freds men flew at them, waving their weapons like clubs, meeting the assault half-way. The brute knocked one with a single crunshing blow at the face, and the other crewman drew a laspistol. He dropped another attacker before Fred bashed the butt of his shotgun in his stomach, and his head after that. The captain was the most dangerous, with his sabre. He buried in Buds ribcage, and slashed at Jakes face after pulling it out again. Judging by the look of him, that was Jakes last fight. Back to back with the big thug, they swung their fists and steel at the encircling men, and another one had to die before the renegades managed to overwhelm the two.
Badly beaten by rifle-butts and iron shod boots, the captain and his tough guy were eating floor. They had lost some teeth and blood, and gained some broken bones and bruises, but they were alive. That was all that counted. Freds team had lost Bud, Jake and Hurf. Karlson had tasted the thughs giant, hairy fist, but he might still be alive, even though his face was a ruin.
Down to six, not counting Fred, the team now would have to hlod their ground against the rest of the crew. But they were on the highest point of the ship, and had hostages. With luck, they might even be able to turn the crew.
Intending to do just that, Fred grabbed the captains shirt at the neck and dragged him to the console. He left a trail of blood behind him, but that came only from his nose, and there was no need to be concerned about the mans life.
„Y'know, all those speakers you have in your shiny ship? I want to talk to your crew. Turn them on, and show me where the microphone is. Now!“
The Captain did not want to cooperate, though. Even threats did not really help, but a nice beating soon had some effect.
Bleeding all over the board, he pressed the nescasarry buttons and produced a microphone from a half hidden box.
Before he handed it over, he had some words with the crew himself.
„This is Captain Jerome Albus Maximilius.“ what a weird name, Fred thought. These nobs sure were strange. „our ship has been stormed and taken“ he blurted into the microphone. „Their leader wants to talk to you. Do not listen.....“ Wait a sec, no messing with my speech! He shoved the weak ruin of a man away and grabbed the micro.
„Crewman, listen to me. The name is Fred Benton, and I have taken your ship, as your noble Captain has already told you. Come to the command bridge without your weapons, and we will let you live. Disobey, and you will die. I will now open the gate and let the rest of our platoon enter. You cannot beat us. I repeat, come to the comand bridge at one!“
When he was done, he ordered his team to take Hurfs flamer, since he had no further use for it, being dead. The men took a defensive position at the entrance, to be ready should the crew decide to try funny bussines.
When the situation was secure, he grabed the captain again and pulled him up. He put on his meanest face and tried to sound as dangerous as possible. „Open the gates, you smear of gak! I'll tear your balls of if you dont!“
That seemed to be very convincing, because the man didn't waste any time to press the nescasarry buttons.
After a few seconds of silence, the ship began to vibrate and a deep moaning indicated that the heavy gates were being lowered.
Things were going better that expected, Fred thought.
The only problems that needed to be solved now were herding the crew together and getting the captain to cooperate. The last one might prove to be difficult, but Fred would not have to solve that my himself; Mance was on his way, ready to relieve Fred from command. He had not had it for a day, yet he was already growing tired of it; all this responsibility was causing him a headache. There were so many things that could go wrong, and any of those could mean his end.
Since there was nothing to do but waiting, Fred figured he could have another word with that arrogant Captain, who was busy lying on the floor bleeding and pitying himself.
A kick below the ribs got him halfway to his feet. Someone had tied them together though, so he stumbled and fell. Fred felt almost sorry for the man.
„Dont bother getting to your feet, Jerry. I just wanted to make sure you were listening“
Jerome Albus Maximilius was a very proud man, and he sure didn't like being referred to as Jerry. But he could use some degrading. Arrogant as he was, he would not make a cooperative companion.
„Do you know why we are here?“ Fred asked.
Maximilius looked at him as he might look at a pile of waste and gak. „Why are you asking me, deserter? You deserve a firing squad, remove yourself from my ship!“
feth, that guy is stupid, Fred thought. Even when he was smearing the floor with his own blood, he still had the impression of being able to command „lesser“ beings like Fred and his men.
„And do you know what they'll do to you? You let us in, there was no fighting. By imperial law, you are our complice. You are dead meat as well, should they get us.“
„gak! He's right!“, the mans facial expression seemed to shout as realization came to him. „Liar!“ he said. „They won't execute me!“
„They hanged a noble-blooded Commander for having ten melta-guns stolen from his storage container. What do you think they'll do to a man who lets a fething TROOP CARRIER go amiss? Huh?“
Judging by the look of his face, te Captain did not want to think about it.
„What do you want from me anyway? You have the ship, now go play defend-the-fortress and get killed. I dont care really. They'll be marching up on us within the next few days, you are worse than dead already!“
„Defend-the-fortress? Oh no, we are not staying on this planet. Besides, the rest of the army is dead, killed by our former allies, who we killed in return. We are the only survivors on this wasteland, and YOU will bring us away from here!“
The look on the Captains face as he understood the meaning of Freds words was hilarious, and Fred would have laughed out loud had the situation been a different one.
And I'll post the tankbusta I'm working on as soon as hes done, in a few days.....
again, there is a change in my plans. I just found out about the dakka painting challenge so I guess thats what I'll be working on when im back oin ger..... so I can only get back to my other projects after that..... sorry.
And in addition, there might be some comission job i might get, lest hope i do!
PINK HORROR OF AWESOME!!! so, I take it he squeezes it until it pukes fire. so, for your next transport, why not just loot.... a daemon prince, perhaps? lash of submission beats big shootas any day.
n0t_u wrote:Thought I commented on this before when I was looking over it earlier today, guess I forgot.
Some nice stuff you have here and I like the "kan opener" thing that that last one has.
thanks mate!

"squeezes it until it pukes" made me LOL! maybe i will loot some more stuff from chaos...... but not in the near future.....got other things i wat to do first
I've seen a bunch of your Ork conversions in the gallery...surprised to learn they all belong to one person! Big props for putting so much personality into every one of your models, and great work on your painting as well. I'd love to get a game against such a characterful force, but I imagine I'd slow things down by stopping to stare (and laugh) at each and every model.

Though this time, its not my work....its Dabedmans!
He build this awesome model (called Sir Marbo) because I won a christmas give away on his blog!
I present you:
Oh, and he wrote an awesome letter wich he sent along:
sadly, there wont be much updating from me..... I am currently painting up my entry for the dakka painting challenge (if you haven't heard about it, head the the dakka front page!), and I am not allowed to show that until public voting is done..... sorry.....
Of course I did! why? Because MrMerlin has been a great supporter of my own project blog since Day 1! ( And he won the give-away I did for christmas!)
And now YOU can partake in the awesomeness that is my blog by clicking the link in my signature!
Why wait? Head over there NOW before anything happens to me-AAARGH!-
Do you see how fast everything can become to late? And not to worry, the stab wound I got just now was only a shallow one; I will be fine. For now.
So what are you waiting for, visit now! Weekly updates with either fluff or pictures or both!
How's that for a shameless advert?
But seriously , I am so glad that it arrived safely. And I must ask of you, since you are a much better photographer than me, please give him ( at least the Luggage) the photographic attention he ( it) deserves. 's all I ask.
Really like your Orks, they look really nice, great detailing. The last Ork you posted is great, strange conversion but it works, and I like the rusted look.
That Marbo Dabedman made looks pretty cool!!
Again I commit the outrage of updating by blog without any juicy orks (or at least some guard) in it. - I'm very sorry
But dont desert my blog just yet! I have decided to make a battle report on tomorrows battle aginst my brothers' Eldar! Hopefully it will work nicely.....
oh and while you're here anyway, have a look at his Eldar. The liknk is in the sentence above
- 10 Guardians with missile launcher and Warlock with conceal 130
- 10 Guardians with scatter laser 95
- DA with dual catapults on the exarch and BS
HEAVY SUPPORT
- Night Spinner
- 3 Warwalkers, 3 Shuriken Cannon and 3 SLs
- Wraithlord with shuriken cannon
~1000
MY ORKS HQ

- 9 lootas 135
- 9 Komanndoz wth Snikrot, a bs and a burna 195
TROOPS
- 20 shoota boys with pk/bp nob and two bs
- Deff dred with 2 scorchas
HEAVY SUPPOORT
- Battlewagon (my trukk) with rolla, red paint, ap, one bs
THE BATTLE
Thats the battlefield:
Mission - Capture an controll
Deployment - Spearpoint
Eldar go first
Setup:
My brother set up his army like this. The Kan is the Avatar, ans the walker are in reserve:
My Orks came up with this: Mek and burnas in the wagon, Deff dred withing 6" of the wagon (for the 4+ kff save) and the looas went on the hill in the back. Komanndoz are in reserve.
TURN ONE
Eldar turn one:
No movement exept for the WL, he advances 6"
Nightspinner and Guardian EML manage to kill 5 Boyz
"NOOOOO!"
Ork turn one:
Dred and Wagon race forward, the boys are trapped in the night spinners web. They only manage to roll a 2 for dt, and 2 of them die (incl one with a big shoota )
The lootas of course stay where they are.
Ork shooting didnt hurt the Eldar a lot; the lootas managed to shoot a wound off the Avatar, and the bs left in the boys mob mows down a Guardian
TURN TWO
Eldar:
Well, nothing really happened here..... he moved his WL towards my orks and shot everything he had at them...... failintg to kill a single one!
Orks:
Not having taken any damage in the Eldar phase, they now advance further unmolested
End of Ork movement:
The wagon rams the WL and the Burnas get out of it (yes, bending the rules a little.....), while the dred runs 5" forward
The WL suffers 5 hits from the rolla, all of wich wound, BUT HE SAVES THEM ALL! ARGH!
The lootas shoot the main gun off the night spinner (YES!) and the burnas fry all of Calvins nicely painted guardians. (YES!). Only the warlock survives.....
end of ork turn:
TURN THREE
Eldar:
the warwalkers appear behind the lootas. (yes, proxys are cool -_- that killa kan there will be finihed as soon as I'm done with my entry for the painting challenge....)
The lone warlock moves towards the deff dred.
shooting:
the guardians with the scatter laser manage to kill 4 burnas, and the lootas suffer three casualities to the walkers. then my brother remembers the two flamers on his WL and fething BURNS ALL MY BURNAS! NOOO!
end of eldar shooting:
the warlock and the avatar then assault my deff dred. the witchblage strikes with deadly S9, BLOWING THE DRED UP! ("noooooo!" again!). But in return, the explosion kills the warlock (hehe....)
Ork turn three:
Snikrot stays in the bushes, and the battlewagon deffrolls a guardian and two DA (hehe):
that orange thingy is his objective
the lootas manage to shoot one of the walkers:
the boys assault the avatar and the Wraithlord, and 4 get killed before the nob shoves his power klak up the WLs arse. Yes, 4 attacs take off three wounds :
the nob on his prey:
Turn 4:
Eldar:
the night spinner rams the battle wagons rear and the big shoota falls off:
the warwalkers manage to soot only one loota with all their heavy weapons, and the avatar avenges the dead WL and wipes out the poor boys mob :(
now i cant run back and claim my own objective /the looa-hill)
the farseer fails to damage the wagon with his wb....
Orks:
Snikrot arrives :
the wagon kills 4 DA with the deffrolla:
the lootas manage to kill a second walkers, and the kommandoz wipe thefloor with the other guardian quad and the farseer, only losing one ork in the process
TURN FIVE
Eldar:
the night spinner tankshocks the komanndoz and they roll a double 6 - NOOOOO! they flee:
there goes my chance to contest the objective.....
the last walker shoots another looota, and charges the rest....
The avatar charges the battlewagon. It blows up
Orks:
the mek, who didnt get pinned by his exploding ride, waits for the fleeing kommandoz to shoot at the DA before he charges. Bad luck makes te komanndoz miss EVERYTHING, so no DA die, and the mek only manages to get himself killed, after only killing one foe in return....
This is real wargaming, playing on the floor with models that ar'nt what they really are making units, ahhh .
I am so sick of seeing these battle reports where the photos are photoshoped and there's all this cinematic crap floating around. This was very refreshing and really quite good, really liked the truck in action. hope this is the first of more to come
I guess I'll do more of these, on the rare occasion that my brother or the guy with the demons fancy a battle......
or if I get to sweden this year, I'll be able to battle rep a conflict with some nicely painted BTs, from the guy who got me into wargaming.....
Great battle rep Enjoyed it. I like the 'old-school' playing-on-the-floor as well hehe. Reminds me of what it used to be.
I use Snikrot as well now. Tag on a warboss and you got some surprise-power. Also I prefer 2x burnas, but I guess that depends on what you are up against.
Nice rep mate!
Want more of this and an occasion to play as well..
cheers, will do more!
Nice rep!
You really are a nice contrast to my group, where we have the policy "if it ain't painted, it ain't fightin'."
Thanks Haraldus.
I guess it'd be hard for me to field a painted army. I try to make every model look as good as possible (wich i didnt do with the first 30 boys, argh), so it takes ages to get something painted

Thanks TaWaaagh
In bigger games I also tag on a warboss, but at a thousand pts I thought the 10 boys were enough.
I'm planning to build a biker boss, and use him along with snikrot. That'd rock!
@Nerdfest: Thanks mate! Yes, I try to have more than just pics of minis on my blog.... fluff and battle reps are also nice
Dakka personality you say? cool
@Zariart: Thanks! Maybe I should paint the trukk (battlewagon). But I guess I'll first make a set of gubbins that I can pin on it to turn it into a propa BW
haha, I agree! They should go out and eat something together
Anyway, I'm in France now (Belle Ille to be specific, and yes, its nice to have nature photographers as parents ) and I did bring my paints and a few minis. I'll finish the painting-challenge diorama in the next few days and then get the kan done, and I also brought some Kommandoz.....
What a great blog, I really like your style Merlin with both the modelling and painting. I will defiantly keep an eye on this to you know....steal ideas
Looks like I may have to use some of these ork models for more than bits now, which means less time for chaos! Love that you put so much attention into the models though, makes them that much more special than those straight from the box.
Lets start with my entry for the dakka painting challenge:
I wont win anything, but It was a lot of fun to make it!
And some WIP pics of my Killa Kan. It was my first attempt at spone weathering, and I'm not too happy with how it turned out, but its good enough i guess.....
And here is a collection of inspirational pics I have assembled. I'll try to build all of these myself soon:
Spoiler:
Plasticard trukk/buggy by Wazzoo2000
A Biker boss by Matphat:
A polysterine tzeench army (I won't do mine as cubes though):
(by Gwaahr)
J-Paints Ad-Mech is also inspiring, I'll do some of my guard in that style:
And my trukk will be painted kinda like that:
This stuff is in no particular order, but I'll evetually do my personal version of all of these
Nice entry to the painting challenge. The freebooter brings needed color to the diorama and the leaping ork is really dynamically posed.
The killa kan looks as good base, but for the weathering to work better you could highlight the chips a bit to make them appear more three dimensional. You could also try to vary the color of the chippings a bit, especially in the larger areas. It really good job for first attempt. My first try (a khador warjack) is really hideous.
I like your entry and gave it a vote too The winner may deserve it; but you did well regardless. You got something like 4 trukk-loads of orky votes, I'd be happy with that.
I agree with Metsuri - your sponge weathering just need a touch of depth and it will be full score. Some mithril silver here, some boltgun there, and orkiness is all around.
Guess what? You got my vote as well even if I didn't know...
For the chipping try to leave a little less color on the sponge, You gonna get a more uneven chipping as well, nice beginning tho!
Haha, I knew that one was yours! It looks really great! For the chipping, I would suggest a dark color like scorched brown first, and then boltgun over it. Dark chips work especially well with light surfaces like yellow.
Loving the killa kan man, lovely stuff, and just reading back you shouldn't be so harsh on yourself, the weathering looks good! Was very shocked to find a pic i recognised up yonder in your inspiration collection. =p I also forgot to tell you how i did the camo on my guardsman ages ago, and seeing as I'm here, and at the risk of hijacking your thread:
It was a basecoat of adeptus batllegrey followed by the ubiquitous badab black wash.
Then i painted lines on in just plain codex grey, try and make either straight lines, or fork shapes and have as many overlap as possible.
Then repeat with black over the top.
really is simple, just takes forever.
Anyway keep up the orky goodness, looking great as always =]
@bangbangboom: Thanks! There actually ARE greenstuffed guts, you just cant see them very well on these photos....so I'll take some more now.
@J-Paint: Thank you as well! Yes, your AdMech blog dwells on the list of "my exalted threads" amongst very few others. Be proud! Also, thanks a lot for the camo tips. I might do a mob of Kommandoz that way.....
@TaWaaagh: thanks for the comment! there actually is gore....
@bangbangboom: yes, yes, here is your photo! @sentinel: thank you very much!
here it is. I scupted this over a year ago in sweden when I just got into wargaming. Please excuse the poor GS quality, I would have redone it but I didnt bring my GS to france -_-
@Selvaggio: 9 you say? Thanks man!
@Vyler: Thanky, welcome to the blog, nice to have you around. I really like your angry marines!
@TaWaaagh: You're right, I'll leave it alone.
Generally, I consider the model done, unless some knows something I should add?
I have been busy so some of your updates got away from me. I love your mechanic work; The killa kan is Brillow!
I voted for your entry but I will admit that I recognized it as yours. It was involved and imaginative(and fluffy) rather than your common "Space marine about to kill something!"
I've been busy building additional bitz onto my trukk and deff dred, and I started painting the trukk.
The inspiration for the Dred changes comes from my dad.... I showed my finished Killa Kan to him and got a "Wheres that things head?" for a reply. Later i thought hey, where is that things head actually? *looks at Dred* I could build a head for that!
Took me and hour to come up with and complete, I hope you like it!
Oh and that Turbo Cigarette paper thingy in the back..... I don't smoke, I use the paper to clean my saxophone......
and primed:
Then, the trukk. A few weeks ago, someone pointed out that the boyz riding it would just fall off. Right, lets build something to keep them in! Just some simple plasticard work, the rivets were a lot of fun to make!
I painted it yellow and rusted, just like that old and rotten Caterpillar I posted on page six:
WIP:
And I have a question: How should I paint the tires?

Deff Dread 'ead looks good! I have a long standing idea/plan to make A Deff Dread wiv a 'ead - but it isn't a Dark Angelz one, so, unless a suitable painting comp comes along... (still suitably different from your excellent incarnation )
Trukk is also looking awesome - I think you need to share your technique
As for wheelz - I'd go the first over the second, but may I offer an alternative?
ooh! i would second Arakasi's wheels, they are really nice, nice compromise between random plating without totally disguising the fact that the tyres are rubber.
@J -paint: Thanks mate, glad you like it. It was my first time using plasticard.....
@Arakasi: Yeah, painted wheelz! Thanks, man! I'll do mine in yellow though..... You wanted to know how I painted it up to now:
1) Spend three days building up layers of yellow (I mixed golden yellow and lyanden darksun)
2) Wash it with devlan mud. Do vertical lines, so it looks like dirt flowing down the sides
3) Rip apart a sponge (try to get a really random and rough edge) and use it to subtly paint a 3-1 mix of scorched brown and boltgun metal. But dont stir the colors too well, cause its nice to have a little more brown here and a little more metal there
4) Do the same with a metal/black mix, but use it les and only on the edges.
I'll work on it some more though, its far from done!
But Red Wunz go fasta! (My initial idea was to use the wheelz to represent Red Paint Job - I'm supposed to be doing two sets in Green for the few times I don't take it...)
Yellow would look cool too though (Badmoonz huh?)
I guessed you painted it something similar to that, but it's always good to know - thanks!
After finally finding your blog. I think its safe to say, I am ashamed at what i have posted. YOUR MODELS ARE FREAKING AWESOME!!! With at least three capital A's. I love seeing good ork conversions with out them looking like a mess thrown together. Can't wait to see what you have planned for a looted wagon. Can any one say looted keeper of secrets? That would be a sexy model. Great job you have here man. Thanks for the mini tut. On the weathering you do. I'll Have to remember it for my rhinos. Great Job. Can't wait to see more from you.
Goresaw wrote:Nice trukk! I like the little shoota stuck down there.

Thanks. The trukk needed something where the lights on a normal trukk would be. And I had a few shootas lying around

Thanks mate! I have painted one wheel Arakasis way, but I'm not too fond of how it turned out..... it has a touch of bee with those black and yellow stripes I guess I'll paint one tire this way and one the other and compare the results......

Thanks. The blood stains on the front do add to the mean look, hehe.....
So, while I was waiting for inspiration on how to finish my trukk, I decided to make a tutorial.
Need feedback! How can I improve it? Or is it OK like this?
I made this tut cause the only tutorials on metal I found told you to drybrush your models. That looks well and fine, but I do it differently soI thought I'd share my way of painting the metal bitz on my orks....
First, the rusty look. I used it on these two for example:
Spoiler:
First stage for that'd be a solid layer of a dark metal (I used GWs boltgun metal)
Then apply a black wash, badab black in my case:
Now you apply a homebrew "rust" wash. I mixed vermin brown with little bit of scorched brown (4-1) and thinned it down to a wash. If you dont have vomit brown, a 5-1 mix of bestial brown and blood red also works (wich you then mix with scorched brown)
After that you use a sponge (or in my case a piece of foam) and rip a chunk of it off. You need a rough edge. Use that to apply some vermin brown, with some scorched brown mixed into it.
Followed by a wash of vermin brown:
Then, sponge on some more vermin brown, this time without any other colors mixed into it.
Here you go, sadly the cameras batteries died before I could take photos of the highlights I had done, but it looked like the tankbusta nob above.....
And here is the other method. It looks like old, worn metal.
Start with a solid layer of a bright metal (yes, bright. The idea is to make it darker and darker using washes, and you stop when you have what you want)
I used mithril silver:
Then, apply some thinned down badab black:
and some devlan mud:
and some sepia:
more devlan (yeah, I moved the lamp coloser o it actually looks brighter.....):
Then, I highlighted it with a mix of boltgun and mithril (wich should look look the chainmail I dont own )
the finished result:
If you're wondering why the paint on the mithril basecoat pic looks a little thick; its because I had already done all of that once, but forgot to put a SD card into the camera I had to repaint both arms -_-
The tutorial looks nice, perhaps a bit larger pics would help. The first tutorials last couple of pics are so dark that it is hard to make out the difference.
The first effect or tuturial could perhaps have more impact with additional step of adding a bit of clean metal to the edges. That would improve the contrast and make it more appealing to the eye.
Metsuri wrote:The tutorial looks nice, perhaps a bit larger pics would help. The first tutorials last couple of pics are so dark that it is hard to make out the difference.

Thanks for the advice! I'll try to take lighter pic next time.
I did actually highlight the metal, but a I said, the camera died before I could take a photo..... have a look at the first model on my blog to see how it looks with highlights......
That is going to be one funky looking ork. One arm all darker than the other. Good old silver arms. The tut was great. Nice and quick to the point. The only problem i had was, with the light shinning yellowish. Its hard to pick out the detail. It could be that the washes where really light and i couldn't tell. Try making everything darker than you normally would. That way when you take the picture of them. It shows up better. But other than that. And sparkle arms, Great job man.

I'm sorry for not posting any pics again But I will tomorrow. I've decided to paint the wheelz brown after painting one yellow, cause, as I mentioned before, it looked like rear end of a bee with all those black and yellow stripes......
Don't yet know what to do after the trukk, either the deff dred or I'll start building the biker boss......
Go for the biker boss, can't wait to see what You pull out on that.
Maybe is because I'm painting the bikerz now and I'm on a two wheels rampage eheheh
UPDATE!
I didn't get much done thanks to uncontrollable hand shake (RAGE!)
Not much, but at least the wheelz! I decided to go for the dirty tires, it fits my trukk better.....
These are still WIP, I'll be adding something once I figure out what....
Why the heck haven't I commented on this log before? You have great stuff here, your Orks are really nicely painted, mate.
The looters are very fun, everyone seems to love playing around with looter conversions! I really need to dig up some Orks from my bits box for the Waargh Dakka after reading this...
Very nice Killa Kans, by the way, and the head conversion on the dred is funky cool. Dads are quite good for inspiration aren't they? Mine used to walk past my room and shout 'More colour!' all the time...
If you're still having issues with sponge weathering I have found that adding a little water to the paint on the sponge helps with application. You need to dab the excess water off first, but I have found it much easier.
Subscribed, keep up the good work and let's have that battle report!! Except without the naked feet, please
I was a little bored with my Orks, so I decided to get a box of these fantastic Mantic zombies. They're the first mob of my new counts-as-tyranids zombie army. The swarmlord will be a crazy scientist riding a dredknight equipped with gigantic, deadly looking syringes full of bright green liquid, and the bigger nid things will be build from ork nobs, ogres, beastmen, zombies riding sentinels and the like.....
But so far I've only got this box of 30 zombies, and I'll do some more Ork stuff before I get around to more zombies. Lacking funds.....
From now on, expect the odd zombie update among the many ork ones!
The first five: [Edit: exchanged the first pic]

I already thin all my paints a lot, including the ones I use for sponge weathering.... But I guess it's gotten much better on the trukk compared to the kan.....
Oh, thats a really cool idea I like it. You could really play around with the idea couldn't you? I'd love to see how you tackled other Tyranid unit types.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, I can indeed play around with the idea! Maybe I should get the nid dex and write a propa nid-swarm list.... But I definetly want a horde of 60+ zombies (gants) surging towards the enemy in a huge, rotten tide.
Next updates will (likely) be the biker boss, more zombies, the trukk, and maybe some more traitor guard
The zombies look great. Good green skin tone and blood is shown in needed amounts.
Few ideas to improve would be to add some darker blood by adding a bit of black to the red. That would make the blood look older. The cloth areas also lack contrast to the skin, a bit of more different color or darker borders would add a lot to the overall look.
The zombies look really nice and especially so in the larger pics in the Gallery, thanks for sharing.
That is a great idea! I would absolutely love to fight against your zombie nids, hehe.
If you wanted to keep it "in universe" you could always make your leader a DE Hemmy or Nurgle of some sort (FW has some cool stuff that could be appropriated). Or just have Fabius Bile riding a Zombie Hive tyrant, Like A Boss.
Honestly, MrMerlin, these models are truly epic. I really love your Ork conversions (Don't tell anyone about Fluffy!) They're always incredibly dynamic and inspired... You, MrMerlin, are actually the Mortal embodiment of Gork and Mork!
Zombies, What else can you do to prove that you are the king? All you have to do now is order a crown and sit back. Those zombies are freaking great. Good job man keep it up and can't wait to see more from you.
P.S. Don't forget to order your heavy weight championship belt while you are at it, Just gearing up for your next post. can't wait to see it.
My cam suffered from "batterius morticus", so I had to recharge it before I could take new pics..... otherwise I'd have posted this yesterday....
So, here is the finished trukk:

Thanks a lot for the advice! My plan was to paint the zombies in groups of five, and every group slightly different from the others. I hope the mob as a whole looks better/more random then....
And I'll use the old-blood technice for some of them.... but I'll probably use a brown instead of black, looks more organic....

Dark brown works also well in getting the old blood, so you'll well with it. I use black to that came naturally to my mind.

Biker,Pirate,Boss,Baddass... Yes its all those things. Great job man. I can't wait to see what you do with him. Are you getting those wheels from other GW models or off toy cars?
Simply brilliant MrM that Ork trukk is fantastic, I'm getting a strong Optimus Prime vibe from it! and the weathering is as stated previously superb! just enough and looks great! I'm also pretty keen to see how you tackle a zombie horde army? things gonna get interestin' boyz!
That wreckin ball arm is ace and helps to add a feeling of speed. Personally I don't think I would have the rear wheel that far back, you already have one engine on the back of the deffkopa anyway. Two engines on a bike might be a little excessive even for orks.
@p_gray99: Thanks mate! I'm not sure how I'll do the engine yet (or if I'll do it at all....)
The head is from Maxmini
@PappaPiggy: Thanks a lot. Those wheelz are from LEGO
@logg_frogg: Thanks, more zombies soon!
@nerdfest: Thanks a lot mate!
@Bangbangboom: Thanks. Yeah, the wheel is pretty far back... hm... but the deffkopta engine seems a little too weedy for that big tire. Maybe cut it off and relace it with a slightly bigger engine?
Loving the concept so far (And how could I not! ).
In terms of overall styling, I have the following suggestion.
Where you have sketched in the Trukk motor, I think it might make the bike frame overly long, and a bit fragile looking. Maybe take out the original kotpa engine, place the Trukk engine in it's place, and perhaps nudge the Trukk engine up a bit, so the blower intake is just a bit above the shoulders of the boss.
Just my two teefs worth. I'm sure it will come out great either way.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, loving the PK variant you have.
That damn wrecking ball has so many applications!
Thanks a lot for the suggestion mat! After thinking about that before I am now going to do just what you said! Exept that I'll use a custom plasticard engine since I don't have a spare trukk engine flying around....
Kustom engine!
Great idea.
Now, you just have to decide what induction method you wanna use, and maybe some exhaust pipes?
I personally dropped the exhaust because I was so enamored with how minimalist my silhouette was.
I'd have a hard time deciding on cowl or piped induction.
The cowl is pretty sweet.
Also, thanks for the plug!

Everything is looking good, How are you going to do the chain going to the back tire? I can't wait to see how this model comes out. And yes the bigger the engine the better. You don't need a weed whacker motor on a bike. You need a mack engine. Its an ork... It needs to go faster, and be red, with red flames, That way it goes twice as fast.
I used the chain from the Trukk wrecking ball for my drive chain.
I was guessing Merlin might do something similar.
Not many good chain bits in Ork kits, sadly.

Sadly, the chain is already put to good use on my bike.... the boss is after all wielding a wrecking ball! I guess I'll just model a protective box around the (missing) chain....
For the drive train, instead of chain drive, you could do axle, or belt drive. Both would work, but since you are using a V8, axle would probably be better.

again, . I DID know that song, just not the lyrics....
I agree, axle would look more fitting.... but how am I going to put it on the bike? Won't be easy! I might be able to figure out some good looking chain/ belt drive, even though it wouldn't fit as well....
Hey MrMerlin - perhaps not an axle, rather a shaft drive. My yamaha V-star is a shaft drive. Lots of other bikes are too. Google some picks and I'm sure you could manage it.

Thanks a lot man! Thats just what I'm going to do!
Since your engine's already 'in-line', then adding a small box with a shaft on one side should look great. Here's a view of a shaft coming from an 'in-line' BMW engine, scroll down a bit to the cutaway view of the BMW R-Series engine:
Now the real question is, how are you going to base this thing? Are you going for a high way warrior feel? Or are they going to track through the mud? Looks great man. Can't wait to see more from you.

PapaPiggy wrote:Now the real question is, how are you going to base this thing? Are you going for a high way warrior feel? Or are they going to track through the mud? Looks great man. Can't wait to see more from you.
Why the hell did you ask?? Now I also have to think about THAT! lol
CoyoteCub wrote:Thought I would pop over and visit your blog after you left me some advice on my blog, thanks for that btw.
I was hesitant to say this, but now that I see how the engine is shaping up, and how the gearing is starting to look, I can't help it.
This project is SCREAMING to become a trike.
With a shortened rear axle and big beefy differential, huge mudder tires, etc...
I've yet to see a GREAT triker boss, but this beast seems to be a perfect candidate for it.
And yes this DOES include Vincent Hudon's amazingly painted trike boss from last years Golden Demon. I love his paint job, but the model really wasn't that impressive mechanically.

Dude, you're absolutely right. I've been thinking about turning it into a trike before, and yeah, I guess I should....
*rubs hand* this will be fun!

The great model builder on MY THREAD !? Dude, I love your modelling work, I'm glad you're interested in what I do
And for all of you who are interested, I've started painting my first comission models! I'll be posting all comission stuff in another thread, but here's the first Ork anyway:
I started working on the biker boss a few days ago, and thats my progress:
just see this mate, nice one, keep it up, cant wait to see it finished, i will say thiis tho, your front wheel needs some work, on the trim, or make the trim smaller
Warboss Gideon wrote:How'd you get the blood effect on the chainsword? Is it just a nice brushstroke?
Yeah, I just used my detail brush to apply some rather thin paint.... if all the strokes are paralell, it looks really nice!
Rogue Wolves wrote:nice work ^interested in this too, the blood is well done Merlin
Thanks Roughe! ^see above for answer.....

hey wazzoo, welcome to my thread! Great to have you around!
Yeah, that was a really early WIP shot, that wheel has been redone a few times since that photo.... it looks OK now...
Cheers, mate!
And thumbs up for Matphat's idea - a trike will be even better for sure!
I also have to say, that I like your painting style - reminds me of Irondog's a bit... You should check his stuff, if you haven't seen it yet:
Irondog Studios He also have an awesome guide about paiting an Orc's skin, which I've used painting Storag's Gunslinger Grot. I suppose, I will paint his Orcs too in not-so-near future
....I'm visiting my uncle for the weekend, so no pics possible....

Yes, I'll make it a trike. Can't wait to get home (but I'll have to paint the commission orks and the painting contest model as well....)
And yes, I have seen Irondogs stugg, its pure awesomesauce! Especially that stompa... wow!

Spoiler:
Dude, that looks great! Loving the gunner on the back!
But: where is the huge engine?
Merlin, one of the pitfalls I see a lot of bikes hit is putting the axle too far below the engine giving it a high clearance. I don't think this really works visually with bikes and if I were you I'd make sure the driveshaft and gearbox were set so that the wheels sit with just enough clearance to keep the oil pan from dragging.
It will be much faster looking and have a better profile.
Something like this, but maybe drop the clearance even more.
Thank you very much for these images, thats how I'll build it! But so far I've only tacked some fitting alarm clock gears on it and build an imaginary differential..... Things are very busy around here, and I have to paint a bunch of orks on commission and my dakka-painting-challenge entry before I can get back to the trike..... sorry
Oh and feel free to check out my commission blog (see sig)!
UPDATE!
Look who's managed to squeeze a few minutes of trike-building in between the other stuff he has to do (preparing for a six-week trip to england, departure tomorrow....)
I glued and tacked the differential together, and drew a few bars on my pc:
it looks a little off, but its no prob since I've not glued all of it yet.....
That's it for the next month and a half, which I'll spend in cornwall (and maybe a week in the netherlands). Expect the next updates when I'm back!
UPDATE!
Yes, I actually managed to work on it some more! Departure to england has been moved to tomorrow morning....
Well, I didn't do much.... just glued everything together and added these pipes:
I'm not completely happy about it as some things look a little uneven and messy, but that can be fixed with a little GS (the differential isn't in the center of the axle for example....)
I reckon if you have big chunky exhausts running in through the frame between the wheels and sticking up at an angle, 2 rows of 3 should make it looking really mean.
Trying to find a pic to demonstrate and ill edit and add if i find it (i can see it in my head, but cant find a pic of it)
EDIT: Found it.............
Something like this but more of them and sticking up between the wheels
I like the way that the differetial looks quite like the real deal. I'd say the idea of several massive exhaust pipes is quite fitting.
Though i can imagine you could put a few bars there that could become the frame for two(or more) big shootas that would point over the sides of the engine, so the driver would fire over his head, the muzzles somewhere over his shoulders.
Oh look, a new flag! I'll be in the UK for about six weeks, so there won't be any updates.....
Right now we (my family and me) are in Sussex, but we'll spend most of our time in scottland and northumberland.
But even though I wasn't able to paint or build anything, here is a small update:
My dakka painting challenge entry, which I can now reveal!

I really appreciate that you put this together!
The guns (I'll be building a big minigun) might go there, yes. We'll see
