Favourite guard regiment and why? Whether it's fluff, models, or whatever why do you like which ones? Sorry I forgot DKoK and Elysians, just put them in other.
Terrax Guard were so amazing. A Commissar in every squad with Regimental Disciplines, Carapace and Grenadiers with Storm Troopers alpha-striking certain objectives. Friggin' amazing. Between them and the Mordian Iron Guard were the most disciplined and badassed Regiments I've ever seens.
And Tallarn! Oh the Guerilla Tactics! Infiltrating my entire army on the board; setting up Missile Teams and Heavy Bolters, creating an ambush like you only see in the movies! So awsome. I wish you could still infiltrate your entire regiment :(. I miss those days.
Valhalla, always been a fan of Soviet Military History so they're a natural. Also they emulate the grimdark stereotypic ideal of what the Imperial Guard is like (unforgiving human wave attacks, brutal commissars in the rear gunning down those who retreat, enormous volleys of lasgun fire, etc.).
Steel legion on top, Vostroya 2nd, Vahlalla third.
Steel legion for the models, coats, fluff, and Commissar Yarrick; Hero of Hades hive. Vostroya for the models, cold weather scheme, and fluff, Valhalla because i love Ciaphas cain, love the great coats, and love the cold.
I like the idea of Catachans(rough cut jungle fighters) but execution is off. Kinda with the rambo scheme that feths it up. Cadians look nice but too plain, Krieg is good but i take original recipe(Steel Legion), Mordians are nice but i prefer Praetorians. The Elysians are cool so are Tallarn. But i prefer Steel legion and ice worlders above all.

Soviets though are Vahallans
Vostroyas are much more in tuned to Cossaks/Tsarist Russia which includes Napopleonics wars (which are quite similar to 40k when you think about it)
I'm one of the few people man enough to vote Catachans. Tougher than boot leather and more manly than a weight lifting contest populated solely by bears.
Personally I like Steel Legion, then Krieg, then Mordians, then Catachans. Steel Legion for models, Krieg for models, Mordians for fluff, Catachans for models and fluff
Vastroyans and Cadians for me. Loves me some russians and starship troopers.
Never understood the love for DKoK/SL. Gas masks, funny helmets, and long coats. It just doesn't stick out as awesome to me.
Now, if they would make a model that looked like the guy in the background...
I've always thought the gas mask with exposed hair look was pretty cool looking for some reason. Perhaps if they made stormtroopers look like that I'd be happy. I hate the storm trooper model (love the kasrkin).

Paladius - looks kind of like 12th century english archers
Phyruss - looks like cadians with bigger shoulder armor
Vastadt - imagine vallahallen soldier wearing rags. very poor apparently
Gryphonne IV - tech guard? anyways looks like a Dr. Octopus backpack and S&M face mask
Morbidian Skull takers - has Aztec looking armor with like dragon/horse bone helmet
Fornus Lix Fire drakes - looks alot like cadians with hellgun and star war storm trooper from star wars helmet
Kaslon Regiment - looks kind of like an eldar harlequin
Bushmen of Serica - looks like Australian, seriously!
Oartad Feral World Veteran - looks like a pirate bandanna with some sort of fur vest
"Bloodpools" - looks like Catachan's with fur boots
Honus Squad - planet Arminiun - looks like some sort of archaic fire fighter uniform. Or kind of like the Sardukar from the old Dune movie
Al-Arach cult - looks like generic 'magician' or monk in a robe look holding lazgun
Oran I- Jaguars - guy wearing a suit that looks like he stripped a tiger of its skin
Teutons - like kreig pointy helmet without face mask and long great coat.
Nordian Berserkers - looks like a space wolf lord with some sort of animal pelt around shoulders
"Lucky 13s" - kind of strange plate with studs armor and a hat that looks like what princesses in old English farie tales used to wear
Xenoia - Amazon chick fighters (all women regiment?)
Cthonol Regiment - looks like steel legion uniform greatcoat but shorter (only up to thigh) and no face mask with heavy backpack (like engineer from C&C)
Justus "Emperor's shield" - like moridians with taller peaked hats. (all commisar looking @_@)
Van Saars Necromunda gang - future skinsuit with fancy shoulder/knee, and toe pads
Tachoman - yep, it's really old Roman armor alive and well =0
Mortant VII - "headhunters" - clean cut guy with a wierd face mask on a stick attached to his back
Kovnia - Elite Gharkas - kind of looks like WWI british uniform with cloth hat (not the steel helmet)
Amerigo Secundus "Wolverine Regiment" - looks like scruffy 80's rockers that reminds me of Mick Jagger from rolling stones
Ogul 37-c "Bashkur Regiment" - Kind of like the classic Viet Kong uniform with same style safari helmet
Cognomen: Feral Dogs - kind of like a drunk logger with some sort of watch cap
Interfectors from Folas Tertus - looks like an enginseer of today with a big exhaust on his back and no face mask but hood is still on
Tangar "Woad Warrior" - naked guy (seriously is naked) covered with paint to simulate camo
"The Gate Keepers" Ghulag planet - spiky left shoulder guard, roman gladiator right shoulder armor with kind of a Elysian helmet but with imperial eagle on top
Remus "gladiators" - imagine the old roman gladiator helmet and one side armor (typical of the "murmillo" look - go google it!)
Ocanan Phalanx Troops - bulky suit with air tanks on back with kind of a "space man of the future look" from the 1970's
Dneipr tanks - apparently female regiment of tankers? wearing something like current chinese republic army uniform
Ezelti Lancers - armored knight from the 12th century complete with clear plexiglass shield
Gantor Rider - looks like a mutant lizardman wearing rags and face covered up riding a "Cold one" raptor from fantasy maybe, hard to describe
Krum "Ironsides" - calvery looks like a samurai on horse with goggles
Ratskins - guy wearing a rat suit (like he skinned a big rat and is wearing it)
Remus Cognomen: The Crushers - once again with the gladiators influence with plate armor on the arms and flaring shoulder guard
Paladius Freelancers - cadian helmet with chain mail skirt and shoulder armor
Praetorian Hussars - looks like sherlock homes hat with mordian uniform
Attilans rough riders - see current IG codex (go Mongols!)
Code 967/2345213 - looks like someone wearing a running suit from the 80's and a ski mask with some sort of boiler on his back
There's probably more like the guys wearing mirror chain mail in the Gaunt Novels but I can't remember their names atm.
TheAngrySquig wrote:Why are so many regiments based on 80's hair bands?
I think actual roman armor guys outnumber the 80's hair bands. I only count 2 maybe 3 IG based off the rockers
Frankly the new IG codex is more focused on heroes but I always felt they should have kept the 2 page insert on all the other regiments that were thought up. Seems like armies are getting lost faster as the imperium plunges into the 42'nd M either that or Cadia is just conquering everything in sight.
loves my Mordians, they fight in their dress uniforms, like a baws.
My current guard regiment is a blender at the moment, Cadians are the most numerous, but they are a plurality not a majority. They started out with a penal legion theme (the cloth under the hard parts of the armor was painted orange like a prison jumpsuit), but I kept picking up the odd cool model here and there, then I bought some Catachan, and by then it was just a clusterfrak. I have Schaffer as my senior officer (since he isn't in the codex), so i guess it still works in that respect. My guard started out inducted into my WH army, and the fluff became that they were the guardsmen picked up by the Inquisitor for his own private army. I may switch my senior officer model for the inquisitor (who would count as a senior officer), just to keep my previous fluff.
I like the generic look of the Cadian models. They lend themselves well to being any IG army, not just Cadian. That being said, neither of my IG armies is actually Cadian (I just use the models). My favorite is my own creation, but my second favorite is my Tallarn army.
I didn't think much of the way they looked for a long time... Lawrence of Arabia in spaaaaaaace and all that... but over the summer I saw a guy running a Tallarn army that he had painted up with a Turkish flavor. He gave the models dark skin so they didn't look like Lawrence of Arabia, he used the Turkish flag as an army badge, etc... The effect was striking. Even though his painting skills were far, far inferior to those of the studio 'Eavy Metal team, his Tallarns looked better than the ones we keep seeing in the IG codexes. He inspired me to track down the old metal models and start up my own Tallarn army (I went with Saudi-inspired imagery as opposed to Turkish).
Hrm... I'm sure some of the regiments can definatly represent space Americans but I'm having a hard time finding the space French army look-a-like even in that dumb list I generated. What would be the ideal French military look be anyway? All I keep thinking is the French guys from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Duh, they have an invisible reflector field created by their sheer aura of manlyness
Cadian Shock Troops. They're literally squatting on Chaos' doorstep. To hold the frontier of reality and keep Hell's Gate closed is one hell of a job. Doesn't get tougher than that.
