Post by: runmymouth

This is my first blog on progress and I have been really enjoying working updating this. I welcome all sugestions and hints and have no problem sharing any information or answering any questions you may have.

I did it. I finished a 2500 point list in about a month. Fully painted and assembled to a high table top quality. I have more stuff I will go back and try to make it look better but at least I can play with this army with pride. I refuse to play with a sea of grey plastic. Sadly still waiting on a second order of bases that I should have ordered sooner. But I will keep posting updates and touch ups I do. So this blog is not done.

Total Points Painted: 2914
Total Points Assembled: 2914
Total Models on finished bases: 86/92

My final army goal and the models I have are not quite the same but I am pushing forward and painting everything I have before I buy more.
I started all of this after the new necron codex came out.

So far I have painted and assembled -
48 Necron Warriors
16 Canoptek Scarabs
Amenemhet (Immotek Model but giving him name for my fluff)
Command Barge
Doomsday Ark
Monolith
10 Lychguard
10 Deathmarks
4 Crypteks
1 Lord
2 Ghost Arks
1 Annihilation Barge
2 Overlords

Working on painting -

Primed but nothing painted on -

Assembling -

New in box -

Ordered, incoming -

Might be looking to pickup in near future
3 Annihiliation Barge
4 Arks
Trazyn the Infinite
1 Destroyer Lord
6 Heavy Destroyers
10 Pratorians
12 Warriors
4 Scarab bases (3 bases worth but split 3 to a base instead of 4)

Background:
Part of the Ogdobekh Dynasty their worlds came through the great sleep large unscathed. They own a great number of ships, vehicles, and warriors. They did not have as many immortals but they do not let that affect their plans, they have more than an adequate number of warriors. Their Phaeron is Amenemhet the Tinkerer. Amenemhet is responsible for many experiments on various animals and species in an attempt to find a biological body for their conensiousnes’s to transfer to.

The planets of the Tundra Cluster had all agriculture and mining operations. The Imperium of Man was not heavily involved other than exploitation of planets in the area. What pitiful humans that were on their worlds were quickly eliminated or taken for experiments, silently. Having detected the humans they blocked transmission off world with dampening fields. The guard contingent was quickly wiped off their planets. The planets and their abundant materials were once again the Necrons.

At this time they are experimenting with human pyskers they have captured trying to figure out how the warp works to see if they can use it to their advantage. None have proved usefull yet. They can use the web ways but they seek a way to travel to places the web ways have lost.

Colors:
Had a question on the colors I am using for my models so I thought I would share to make it easy for anyone who might find a color they like.
Base Coat Necron Bodies - 3 Parts Boltgun Metal/2 Parts Regal Blue. I mix this by pouring regal blue into a new bottle of boltgun. It's messy but it works well and you have a lot of this to use.
Base Coat Necron Weapons - 3 Parts Lich Purple/2 Parts Boltgun Metal. I mix this by pouring boltgun into a new bottle of lich purple. Again it's messy but it works well and you have a lot of this to use.
Eyes/Detail work on most weapons - Scorpion Green
Feed pipes on most weapons - Hawk Blue
Wash - Badab Black
Vehicles - Regal Blue
Gold - first layer is a 1 part burnished gold, 1 part scortched earth. 2nd coat is burnished gold. Easy way to do gold
Sholder plates - base coast with necron body mix than do a light layer of tin bitz.

Vehicles - after basecoating use an extremly heavy layer of the wash to really darken the vehicles. I have not come up with a way I like to highlite that back out so I am just leaving it dark.
Weapons should also use a heavy layer of the wash. Make sure you don't get too much on details, use a clean brush to brush away stuff on top of details so that the Scorpion Green and Hawk Blue don't get dulled out.
Body's use a moderate layer of the wash to darken the bodies a bit.

I used heavy layers of wash to really darken my army. I intend to base them on that ice world base, and will post pictures of it when it comes in next week hopefully.
Any more questions feel free to ask and I will add the information here.

All Lessons learned in progress -

Scarabs - Glue them upside down on stand first, a lot easier that way.

Warriors - Glue left arm first, and keep it kind of pointing out and to the left.

Immotek - Paint Cloak before assembling rest. (Not a big deal though if you don't)

Ghost Ark/Doomsday Ark should not have the pilot section assembled before painting. Sadly I will never get the inner parts to look as good. Keeping middle section unassembled was fantastic for painting and you can see the whole thing so really necessary.

Monolith - Paint EVERYTHING before assembling. I do mean everything. There aren't that many pieces. Inside and out since you can kind of see inside. Impossible to do this once it is assembled.

Monolith - You may have to trim the green stuff to get it to go in the holes when you are finished painting.

Deathmarks and Lichguards weren't that bad to assemble. I need to pay more attention next time I do lychguards because 2 hand are not quite right but didnt feel like taking the time to fix it. So as a future warning to anyone assembling their own necrons watch which way the hand are supposed to be. Also one of the weapons has an upside down hand (one of my 2) and I didn't like putting it on in a wierd position so the hand just isn't quite right.

I have updated my list to reflect what my current goal is going towards creating. This is 2500 points worth of stuff with what I have already bought and about $150 more of purchases to finish out the army to 2500 points. (then I can just add a a box here or there and be happy)-

Hq - Finished
Necron Overlord Warsythe 100 - Finished
Command Barge 80 - Finished
2 Cryptek destruction, 1 solar pulse 90 - Finished
Immotek 225 - Finished
2 Cryptek destruction with solar pulse 90 - Finished
Lord Res Orb, Warsythe, mindshakle 90 - Finished

Troop - Finished
8 Warriors Cryptek 104 - Finished
Ghost Ark 115 - Finished
8 Warriors Cryptek 104 - Finished
Ghost Ark 115 - Finished
20 Warriors Immotek and Cryptek 260 - Finished

Fast Attack - Finished
10 Canoptek Scarabs 150 - Finished

Elites - Finished
8 Deathmarks (Cryptek) 152 - Finished
8 Lychguard (Lord) 360 - Finished

Heavy - Finished
Doomsday Ark 175 - Finished
Monolith 200 - Finished
Annihilation Barge 90 - Finished

Total 2500

For basing I have decided to go with these -> http://dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/base_sets/sci-fi/ice%20world%20series.htm

Your paint scheme is good, I would add some highlights onto those gauss flayers.

its been recommended before some lich purple highliting on the wires, I am just scared because I don't want to make it too bright... if it was a different color that might work.. But I don't know.

Going to try to go for better lighting on the next set of pictures but you can't really see that the bodies are actually a blueish metal too. They aren't just standard boltgun.

This, it could be that the lighting isn't doing it justice.

Ok I will see what I can do, I tried to really darken the purple because I will take some pictures of my big cannon when I get home that hasn't been washed in baddab black and it's wayyyy to bright.

You already know that I like the color scheme so the biggest suggestion I can make is to put some edge highlights on the vehicles. It will help to punch them up a notch. Here's a site that I absolutely love - Massive Voodoo. While their English isn't always the best, these guys are true masters of the art. Take a look at their basic techniques page under what they call "edge-accentuation". It's really easy to do and fast once you get the hang of it.

Thanks for the link been looking into it.

I uploaded finished Monolith pictures. Well finished in terms of it may see some finishing details looked at later but it is definitively tabletop ready. Get to start on a new box tommorow

Also the monolith will take a lot longer to do detail finish up painting than you might think.

As a side note, with all these extra weapons I really could create some nice planet fall weaponry (not quite right but will look cool).

Onto the photos.

Tonight I got most of the basic detail work done. Need to do gold crowns, tin bitz shoulders and touchup around green spots that got out of lines. About 65% of the way through painting these guys.

Yea for a day off of work, got some stuff done this morning. Hoping to get my first box of deathmarks done this afternoon. Unless the wife has a lot of things for me to do...

I think these guys have had the most details I have done so far (Even more than Immotek and overlord). I really like the way they turned out.

Now for the finished guys.

So I finished another box of deathmarks this morning. After bottling the beer that has been brewing I am gonna go to the store and pickup another box of stuff. Next up is most likely warriors because my army is looking kind of small and what better way to build it up faster than more warriors.

Whoa that's quite a nice collection you've got on those shelves there! Nice to see more necrons, the doomsday ark looks cool.

I would suggest thinning your paint. Water works ok, but if you can find it, Tamiya X20-A is an amazing paint thinner that will allow you to brush paint on in super-thin layers without brush strokes. This will make the details on the model crisper and not to mention save you paint.

I'll take a look into it, should I add the thinner to my plate or my paint pots? I do already add some water to my paints on my plate. And thanks for the compliment on my armies

Add it to your plates/palettes. I use droppers to suck it out of the bottle and drop it onto blobs of paint I dab out of the jar in about a 1:1 ratio. It's some good stuff!

Ok so I timed a full painting from after primed to fully painted/detail work completed. It took about 2 hours of work. Not bad at all. Sadly going to be out of town for thanksgiving so no new models painted until Next weekend most likely when I get a chance to go back by the store. At least I hit 2k points in about 16 days. You too can fully paint/assemble your armies too! I'll be able to answer questions as I am going to my mother-in-laws and no men are going to be around...

Yes It is sadly true that my necron warrior looks better painted than my dreadnought. Give me a break dark angels were my first army and thats a metal model. I hate painting/assembling metal never comes out as nice.

So I have been busy lately so haven't quit gotten as much done yesterday and this morning but I did find time to assemble my lord and cryptek's. They are all fine cast so it wasn't very much fun. Some of the staffs were bent and i tried running them under hot water to unbend them. I also lost a tail on one of my crypteks in the sink. So sadly one will always be missing his tail...

I assembled the lord first and broke his staff. It wouldn't glue back together easily and it was still beant so i decided to convert one of the staffs from my box of lychguard. Looks pretty shard so no complaints here, just had to cut off a hand.

Crypteks weren't that bad once i washed them but that is when i lost a tail in the sink.

You're making me green with envy

My blog is being neglected...damn assignments, no time to paint :(

Anyways, (hold on a second, im not trying to be an a**, but I hope you're open to CC)

I feel that the green highlights are way to rushed, as if you're under a strict dead line. Use a fine detail brush, start with a thinned down layer of snot green, then, mix some snot green with scorpion green in a 1:2 ratio, and go over it. Mix some scorpion green with some white, and swipe on a thin line, just to give it a smooth highlight.

For OSL, I have an easy and effective way, depending on where the weapon/orb/etc is facing, drybrush some snot green, but before it dries, brush on some scorpion green, then a bit of white so it blends in nicely, this aim is not to exaggerate.

As for the monolith, i'de give it another thin coat of the blue/purple, also, try lightening up the same colour with white, and highlight some areas, its looking a little flat, same goes for the ark.

In all seriousness, you're on the right track, im liking your material, and with a little bit of work, you can make it even better

Good luck!

I like the metalic paint recipe. I am debating using house of color airbrush paint. Its pretty thin but I am not sure what the chemical coponants of it are.

Thanks for the CC and yes I really do appreciate some of those. As to the Ark/Monolith I am still trying to figure out what I want to do now that it is based for table top ready. I am not sure what I can do because i tried drybrushing on some more blue and just didn't like what it went back to. I am deffinitly debating on what I want to do with that.

As for my greens they are a bit rushed yes as I was not sure how I wanted to do them. Going to work on OSL on orbs and ship stuff when I get everything finished. My goal is to finish everything for xmas so that my wife can "give me a painted army for xmas". I definitively am not opposed to going back and tweaking some stuff. I just don't know what I want to do to anything beyond the osl on orbs (and I am going to try what you said on those) and something but I am not sure what to the vehicles.

What types of area would i want to highlite with regal blue/white mix?

Also as for the detail work I am using a thin detail brush but am still pretty new at painting. (A large portion of my armies (Fantasy) all were done by painted figs) So I am still learning basic techniques on painting in general. I deffinitly appreciated any help and feedback though and thanks for your input!

I haven't heard of house of color but let me know how it turns out. I might eventually look into an airbrush but I am still working hard on my brush techniques before trying more advanced and difficult techniques(faster but easier to screw up).

Ok got around to getting the stuff for basing done at lunch for 10 of my bases. I need to thank TheKellector for his assistance with the magic wash.

Hope to get this finished up tonight or at least a long way through painting and getting the bases ready. Then comes the hard part of trying to unglue all my models and rebase them all.

Also try to make sure your brush doesnt have regal blue residue in brush. Had to paint a few of them twice to get white. As you see the sample ones I show have a blueish tint when I painted them white.

Well I am working on getting my bases finished this evening.

Conclusion of the basing process:

Step 1: De-flash the bases.

Step 2: Wash the bases with soap and water.

Step 3: Dry bases.

Step 4: Prime bases in white.

Step 5: Paint bases white.

Step 6: Wash bases in ice blue wash.

Step 7: Get model off old base.

Step 8: Paint feet again after getting excess material off feat.

Step 9: Glue model to new base.

Last but not least for the night I finished the rest of the bases. Was a lot of work but I really really like how they turned out. I give 10/10 for these bases. Very little flash to clean. Very nice details and definitively look way better than GW bases. Hopefully the next few days will see me transfering all of my models from the old blackies to these nice new bases. Gonna save 6 for models not assembled yet so some warriors will be SOL as I only have 70 25mm bases.

Just edited this post as to not self bump without any work or reason. I see it is hard to see the wash with my blue flash. Going to have to see what I can do take a better picture of that.

Was kind of leery of spending $1 a 25mm base, but after getting them and finishing them they are really worth it. Think I am going to have to look at buying aftermarket bases for all my armies in the future. Only problem I have is that the guy in the vehicle barely fits in and bumps his head.

Well got everything rebased that I could. I really like how the scarabs turned out. Some of the bases of the scarabs didnt quit make it so i decided to put one directly on the base. Well see for yourself. I turned off the flash on these pictures and they turned out a lot better.

Well now that those models are based (table top finished but probably not done). Waiting on some more bases to come in because I had to make another order.

I started work on my ghost arks. I am going to do both middle sections, paint, then assemble them. I will then assemble and paint the prow and back part after doing the middles. Figured I could assembly line all 20 warriors and the 20 weapons. Not my favorite part but hey it will look good with my army.

Only piece of advice for these are assemble from the bottom up on the warriors. Glue the chest pieces together and put the head on but then assemble the other 3 bottom parts before putting together. Make sure you have the bottom piece 5 one way and 5 the other so that they can attatch to the ark correctly after painting.

It has been a long two days. The ghost arks take a long time to both assemble and base coat. But now that I have the warriors all painted up I just need to detail the guns and do a little clean up on the warriors and I can assemble the middle hull sections. The front and pilot section just need green detailing and the pilot needs a gold helm and green detailing. Another day's worth of work and both ghost arks will be done!!!!

An awesome side note on this model. This thing is well detailed. I love the scarabs crawling up the damaged warriors.

So my almu mater won the 3rd round of playoffs today 49 - 13!!! Eat um up Katz... Anyways back to the painting. I did detail work on all the weapons and touch up on the warriors. Time was flying by as it took 2 hours for assembly and painting. I need to paint a few blue that were just primed black but don't have detail colors to paint on (end of weapon train and the bottom where the flight base connects to arches.

Only detail work left on the back part, front part (really small amount of green), and the pilot. I would say im 90% done with both of them now and a little bit of painting and glueing tommorow should finish up these 2.

I like what you have going here. I was skeptic of your color choices in the first few picks, but after seeing the rest of the pics you've posted I am sold.

I also really like that shelf you got. I think I am going to spend tomorrow building something similar.

keep up the good work.

The shelf was $30 (or 50 but i cant remember)at ikea. I think it's the billy. May be cheaper to buy then build. It's more expensive in other colors but white is really cheap as I remember.

Thanks for the compliments too. My wife wasn't sure at first either but it's come together nicely.

You do have a point, part of it is I really just want to get these all to a table top standard. Holidays are taking up more time and I haven't been feeling well. With that said there is some stuff I want to go back and touch up. If you see something that looks sloppy please tell me what it is so I can go fix it. I think I got everything to have at least neat lines and to be of at least the same standard as the previous stuff.

Thank you I do like how the lines turned out with the green effects. As for the wife, she chooses to allow me to do this so that I can't say anything about her hobby yarn costing $10+ a spool. Or that new top she wants costing $25+...

I do see what he was talking about on the lines on the pilots some blue where there should be some body color and a little sloppy on the bottom. I will touch those up tonight.

Have no fear on the weapons and engine effects though. Those are deffinitly going in for some major upgrades after I get my army up to a nice table top standard. If the wife lets me tonight I shall get the last 5 lychguard detailed and the other overlord detailed. Then minus the bases for these guys (on order) everything will be done!

So I got an early xmas present from TheKellector this year and thought I would share my work on this with ya'll. Need to get some paint so I haven't bothered to prime it. Hopefully Monday I will start to have some work done on it. Anyone have any advice on this before I start painting it? Going to have dead ultra marines with a dead dark angel rhino. After Xmas I am going to be sharing my fun with a realm of battle board.

They are as good of a tarpit as th/ss termies. Not the most powerfull CC unit no, but they will keep you tied up in melee forever if not outright kill you.

Alright I got off my arse tonight and started base coating this piece of terrian. I need to go to the store to get a few more colors. I am thinking I will drybrush some dhenub stone onto the stone areas, and some really light grey on the tree's. The dark angel rhino will get a drybrush of boltgun metal. I will paint the treads a boltgun metal. Then I will need to find a rust color to drybrush over the metal. The space marine bits are going to be in ultramarine blue as no self respecting dark angel fails an armor save in terrain

I used about 13 paint colors so I can't say that it was a tiny amount of project but it only took about 5 hours to paint all this.

Ahh because I have multipe armies and I wanted to keep it generic as I am basing necrons Ice to give the bases more pop.

I may even put this up as a forest for Fantasy (Which all my armies are grass based). While I like Ice based most of my armies don't use ice.

Had a chance to get some more night goblins done today. I forget how many more colors are needed in a fantasy model compared to a 40k model. Most of the detail work had to be done with a fine detail brush as well because everything is soo small. Develan mud to the rescue at the end to dirty stuff up and cover up very minor blemishes. I also am getting 2 large pieces of terrain painted for me by someone local. I might like to paint them but they are so large I really want them to look nice. So I attatched a picture for scale because when I say they are huge I mean it.

Lol Na I host at my house. My local store in clear lake has some nice 40k terrain. Gerard's gaming, but they are down in clear lake so is a bit of distance from you. This time of year can be tough to find games though since people are busy with holiday stuff. Haven't gotten a game in, in more than a month because I haven't been available during stretches of normal gaming times.

I do have quit a bit of stuff but that's because I am not paying for any other hobbies at the moment.

So I got about half of it ready for flocking at this point. Skulls are not going to be painted until I finish flocking. It takes a lot of wash and adeptes battle grey to get these stones. The heavy drybrush white doesn't take as much. I really like how my stone is turning out and when I get done flocking it I think this table will look really nice. I plan on doing some finishing touches after it's flocked but I am trying to finish it before a friend gets here for a game. I may add another layer of wash before priming of develan mud but I am undecided.

Well I got cracking hard today on that battleboard some more and finally flocked it!!! Well Now I need to let the glue dry, spary more glue on it and flock a bit of green grass. Let that dry. Then seal it with a coat or two of sealer but for the most part it is done I started to run out of flock about halfway through so I mixed in some woodland scenic flock and that is why 3 of the boards are a bit lighter. After I add the green grass on top, no one should be able to tell the difference.

Nice, nice! Can I reccommend doing another layer of flocking on the board when its all connected so the grass looks more relistic and uniform? the fact that it stops in some squares and starts in another in some places looks a little unrealistic. Apart from that, your works are looking fantastic! Look forward to seeing the shard finished up!

The table is 3' tall. I wanted something easy to reach over during games instead of being a really tall table.

For the table top: I used 3 pieces of MDC particle board. It was supposed to be 48"x24" but it was 49.5" by 24" so my table is a little wider than needed. I measured everything than cut out the base boards from 4x8 pieces of wood. So I ended up with a nice rectangular frame. Then I cut 2 more support beams to go where the seems of the mdc where going to go.
Made a crude drawing below in ascii. If anything isn't quit clear I wouldn't mind taking more pictures or telling you more information.

For the Legs.
I cut 4 pieces of 4"x8 for the legs on the long side. I cut 4 pieces of 2"8 on the shorter sides to make the legs in a L shape. I glued and nailed the L shape together for the legs. After the legs dried glued together and nailed togther I screwed them into the inside of the table with 4 screws, 2 on each side.
