I think it is something in between. Have you ever played Arcanum? The idea is a technical progress in the fantasy world -when Loren forests are destroyed for precious wood, magic is prohibited but orks are always orks

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Thanks for warm comments

I will continue - next encounter about Republic enemy, kinda evil empire called Albion imperial Alliance :

Light infantry :

infantryman of the Empire are more "augmented"

Special forces/Heavy infantry

these regiments are used for stealth missions

Steam Sardaukar - very heavy infantry

Heavily converted from samurai to medieval knight
Formidable spice-marine like creature in the steampunk universe:

for comparison:

Medium imperial tank:

Steam sardaukar spice marine looks great!

They use liquefied warpstone as analog of uranium

I will continue with miscellaneous works, not particularly connected to Evil or Good:

Steam Power Plant/ pen holder

I actually made it from office pencil holder, and still can use that way:

Steam Grand Mechanical Mole

Giant machine made from styrofoam for skaven:

Dwarves of the Steam Era from mighty kindom of Karak Anghaz

the final variant is on the left:

According to the rules, you should open a new thread in the painting and modeling section, or you can ask the mods to move this to the P&M blog section and keep it all one thread.

Oh, and the electric beverage warmer is really cool

Octavus, your work is seriously really amazing. I think you are selling yourself short by making this project a tie-in to the Warhammer world. There's enough strength with your concept and models alone that you could make this its own world, independent of Games Workshop - and I think you should. Make this your own world, leave GW behind. I think your work is better than just being second fiddle to another game universe!

That armored steam-marine, the dwarf... Really, really amazing stuff. I would buy those models if they were available, if you could somehow duplicate them. I know a lot of other people would as well. Have you considered casting duplicates of them? I seriously should, or find someone else that can do it for you.

Wow. I had seen some of these in your other thread(s?), but most of this is new to me. The rest of the walkers are great, but the figures are absolutely amazing.

Starting up a whole company and producing kits yourself might not be feasible, but I'd seriously consider spending a few hours poking around online, researching commercial casting services. Limited runs mean the figures wouldn't be cheap, but this stuff is collector/serious painter quality - I'm sure there's a market for these models that would be willing to pay a premium.

You might want to consider something like Kickstart - at least, I think that was the program's name... Basically, people "invest" in projects by pledging money without actually paying. If the target amount is reached, the "investors" are charged and receive their items, once they're produced. If the target amount isn't reached, no one is charged and the item never goes into production. Could be a way to circumvent the start-up money issue, as your first run of models would be paid for in advance. Someone making resilient foam terrain pieces used this system, recently. Perhaps someone with a better memory than mine can point you towards their thread.

A bit? It IS one of the Imperial Tanks. That's what makes it so awesome! There might be more than a passing resemblance of the Imperial Troopers too.

I mean, spot on, perfect, badass, I'd give all my money for it. So much clankier than the Edelweiss... but that was a cool tank too.

Absolutely amazing work. You seriously need to consider teaming with a rules designer and creating a stand alone game for your figures. I whole-heartedly support the Kickstarter route to get things off the ground. There are several gaming Kickstarters shown here on Dakka that are raising some serious money:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/429990.page

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/436803.page

If you could get a decent concept together for the background, game, etc. I'd be happy to invest at least $100 in a Kickstarter. I'm sure I'm not alone here, either. There are plenty of folks around here who could point you in the right direction on the mass production front, so you can get a realistic financial goal that would need to be met.

This setting has so much potential! I wonder why GW doesn't try playing with these sort of concepts as well.

It's interesting to see that vast parts of Loren and Bretonnia have been conquered. I wonder how the elves in this setting will be, must be rather interesting...

What about Chaos? Dieselpunk Chaos might be very interesting, can't really imagine how you would do them (hence the curiousity).

Good questions )
I always thought (fantasized )))) that wide spread of the technology would be possible in the magic world only if magic would lose its potence - somehow it happened during the last great stand between Order and Chaos when one artifact was used. Chaos (and Magic winds) were completely wiped out from the world with the price of cataclysms - you can see big new sea on the area of the Empire. People and other races survived -dwarves helped with first steam techs )
Currently big states are Great Republic (people on bipedal shagohods), Karak Anghaz (gnomes)and Albion Aliance (evil tanks) . Skaven underground empire survived ( OF COURSE!) but elves were put into reservation (Loren wood is too important for progress). On meantime magical winds have found its yet small ways into new world and Chaos gods will come with it

MY (Dishonored ) steampunk-dieselpunk  @ 2012/11/04 18:41:19

Post by: Malika2

Hmm, I like the idea of magic having lost its potence. However, I would make it a more hidden threat, rather than defeated. So whilst it might no longer be the threat of vast Chaos armies, the Gods/daemons are not destroyed...

Cults from within the empire still try to create the circumstances for Chaos to reawaken. Kind of compare these new Chaos cults to the Cthulu cults you see in a lot of fiction.

So the impression is that Chaos is wiped out, but it's not. Despite of this, Chaos has suffered greatly. Their realms in the north have been destroyed, having been turned into wastelands, inhabited by a few mutants and outlaws who managed to survive.

But Elves in reservations, sort of like the native Americans in the real world? Wouldn't they have resisted? What about the High Elves and Dark Elves?

But since we are discussing dieselpunk Warhammer: remember Man 'O War or the more contemporary Dreadfleet? What about a dieselpunk counterpart? I could imagine all these factions have airships instead of conventional naval ships to fight each other as well.

Post by: octavus

I think ithere are great thoughts .

I agree that chaos should hidden rather completely distroyed and comparison with Chulthu is very exact -it is like spinal shock trauma -if you injury your spine initially it will be no function but only initially )))

agree about forest elves - always thought about them as dying but proud and resisting race, which however will get chance of survival as magic returns. And reservations -it looks like more as uranium mines )
High elves are possibly dead as Ulthuan was sunken during cataclysms, Dark - rather pirates and terrible legends.

steam dragons as regular fleet was my initial idea, but flying pirates as adversaries are very cool )

Post by: Malika2

I would imagine Steam Dragons are more akin to aircraft or fighter jets. The airships I had in mind would be huge (more suitable for Dystopian Wars scale). Very curious to see scrap built orc airships.

Bretonnia would probably be some impoverished kingdom. I remember their background mentioning inbreeding, I could see this having happened amongst the nobility as well. You'd basically have a king unsuited to rule, but a population to weak to resist. The empire doesn't really do anything against them since they've got the Bretonnian province (only part with usable natural resources).
The remaining kingdom simply functions as a buffer against other factions.

The undead could also still be around. Vampires existing as upper class citizens within the empire, others living on estates in the country side. These families could have private armies of zombies (great excuse for Nazi Zombies or something).

MY (Dishonored ) steampunk-dieselpunk  @ 2012/11/04 19:15:50

Post by: octavus

yep Bretonnia is a feudal rotting corpse in the new era, altough it is trying to preserve nobility. Many of refugees escaped to Albion after Bretonnian-Vendigroth war created new class of ruling elite, hating Republic but using technologies as they learned the bitter lesson.

Orks are always orks and the great supply for new pirate era
And huge air ships "Dragonnests" class are in mind but yet to be built.

In summary -i agree that GW loses great idea )))

What scale did you have in mind to use to build the Dragonnest?

I'm still curious to see how you will make knights. Robotic horses?

But yeah, it's cool to see you flesh out this idea more. Maybe in the future it can then move more away from GW and become it's own thing. But it's handy to have something to hold on to in the beginning. GW used to do the same. Warhammer is nothing more than an imitation of Tolkien and D&D, 40k was Warhammer in space, combined with Dune.

So nothing wrong with being influenced!

What about something like this? Or maybe that might be more fitting for the Hobgoblins, who would be akin to biker gangs or something...

I'm digging the two ideas you posted, you might use both methods. The original Empire had different knightly orders who fought differently. Perhaps these old orders became companies/guilds, each with their own technology, thus different types of mobility and ways of fighting.

High elves are possibly dead as Ulthuan was sunken during cataclysms, Dark - rather pirates and terrible legends.

Just thinking here...but what during the final war there was some sort of giant genocide? So Chaos might have practically been victorious during this final war. However, so many died, that Chaos itself became weak (not enough worshippers). The survivors then turned even more towards technology, which means less worship, thus making the Chaos Gods even weaker...

Ok, so genocide.... We could have it that during the final war many species were exterminated or on the brink of extinction. The Elves could have been almost wiped out (which explains why they couldn't resist the growing new Republic). Species such as Halflings might have died out during the war as well, with a few of them surviving as discriminated minorities in the empire. Ogryns the same thing. Monsters such as Dragons might have finally gone truly extinct, unless those steel dragons are encased dragons...

Few species remain, many in reservations or zoos, but not so much in the wild anymore, as the surviving factions seek their dominance over nature.

Air ship is amazing - I could not allow space in my ouse for that and amount of work should be tremendous )))

Cataclysm for me was always loss for both sides and Chaos suffered the most, however it is always possibility for return into the world. And i like idea of secret Chaos cults.

Pretty much i agree about dragons and other myphical creatures

Different orders of knigts -that is possible -I think here is the possibility of separation based on type of technology -chemestry, pysics, optics, explosions, psychoweaponry

Actually i made different heads for steamgear -which can represent different preferenses:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/223168?browseid=3283516
http://www.coolminiornot.com/223172?browseid=3283516

I guess that in game terms the separation of the knightly orders could indeed be as you described. But I still think that the Knightly Orders were turned into Companies. It kind of makes sense, as the monsters were defeated and religion started to fade, the need to chivalrous knights also ended. The Orders were without a job and had to adapt. So the first became mercenaries. However, with their resources of old, they sought to become more independent, thus also producing their military wargear.

So these newly formed states (Republic, Empire, etc) started to need additional forces in their armies besides the usual conscripts. The Knightly Orders became privatized armies that were fully self sustainable.

It's very possible that such Knightly Orders also exist in Bretonnia, Tilea and Estalia. However, they would lack the networks that those companies in the Republic and Empire have. However, this doesn't mean they are weaker.

I could imagine that the undead would be a Knightly Order/company from Sylvania, dealing in certain necromantic technologies... Zombie soldiers, and more dangerously...Ghouls, who would be akin to those Super Soldiers from Wolfenstein. Basically an undead version of the Spice Marines.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm throwing every little idea I've at you because this project really got me pumped!

I'm doing more thinking on the undead. Zombies and Ghouls are probably made through Warpstone radiation. Skeletons however are a bit more difficult, and then I saw these. What if instead of normal skeletons, you'd have clockwork skeletons? Speaking of clockwork drones, you should check out this Doctor Who episode, it has clockwork robots in it.

Undead for me are just good for necrotechnologies...vampires and other are hidden as mmagic powers collapsed. Some cults are possible? Sylvania surived? but very poorly inhabited
Idea of merchnaries orders is great!

MY (Dishonored ) steampunk-dieselpunk  @ 2012/11/06 10:25:53

Post by: Malika2

I think Vampires as a species would still exist, as a magical entity no. But they could simply hide in human society, they're just weaker than they used to be.

So undead stuff is done through technology, not magic really.

Sylvania probably survived, maybe even becoming a more "normal" province, despite having suffered heavily during the last cataclysm. This means that it is poorly inhabited, and people are still scared to go there. This means that the Vampire nobility can still hide there. Having set up their own companies, creating necrotechnologies and such.

They still bide to get their former glory back, but not in the sense of turned everybody undead. I can even imagine that the Carstein look back on their past with a sense of...well I can imagine that they believe that those stories about actual undead and evil are over exaggerated propaganda from the other companies.

By the way, we could even expand towards the New World, Lustria... I can imagine that the Vampire Coast and Skeggi could have become landing posts of a new era of colonialism. This could be a place where there still is some magic (or maybe not), but even if there is or isnt, it's filled with resources (wood, gold, etc.)

I can imagine the Norse trying to become a major power by it's colony there. Of course the Republic and Empire try to gain a foothold there as well. Not knowing about the native population...

Here some Lexicanum info on the Empire's Knightly Orders. Here are the provinces.

I would imagine that the Knightly Orders and the noble families of those provinces have become companies over the years/centuries. Knightly Orders in a very self-sufficient mercenary kinda way, whilst the companies that used to be the noble houses of the provinces do it on an even more totalitarian way. With this I mean that they have become the producers of almost all goods within that region, but also have their own military arm. Some of these provinces might have faded away and others might have come in place.

But all in all, these new companies produce almost all goods used within their region of influence. Kind of imagine it like those Japanese companies that produce everything imaginable (from cars to computers to guitars to food).

The church might still exist, I would imagine that the Church of Sigmar is still around, albeit in a different form. We could have had some sort of Reformation.

I was wondering what kind of role the Witch Hunters would have in this. But what if they separated themselves from the Church of Sigmar? The Witch Hunters have evolved into some sort of secret police of the Republic, maybe kind of akin to a dieselpunk version of the KGB?

More brainstorming.

You mentioned the age of magic has ended. I could imagine that most of the races and gods have died out. The Elves are extinct. Humans have become the dominant species.

Orcs, Goblins, etc still remain. By the way, do Orcs in WFB work in the same way as in 40k, as in that they're spores?

Dwarfs are around, but what if they are also going extinct? This would mean that the Dwarfs have been seeking other means to still be a power. So what they do is basically create automaton armies, basically robots. But then very steampunk/clockpunk, mixed with a stone golem kind of feel.

To speak in 40k terms, they would most likely be akin to the Iyanden Craftworld that mostly fields Wraith Guards and Wraith Lords since it hardly has any living Eldar to put in their armies.

The Chaos Dwarfs could still be around, but with a way lessened magic feel to them, more akin to the "evil Nazi" you see in a lot of fiction, but then dwarfs. These guys would probably still field slave armies and such. They were the creators of the Black Orcs, what if they did a similar thing with other species such as humans, ogres and dwarfs?
