I have been doing some steampunk stuff for a few months, now, and would finally like to show some of it to you guys, to see what you think.
This is my steampunk workshop, which is further along now than in the pic (it's pretty much finished, now). what do you think?
This is a picture of my unfinished goggles, which mostly just need the strap. Can anyone help me figure out how to attach an elastic strap to the black gw paint pot lids? I was thinking of using gorilla glue to attach the elastic to plasticard, then using plastic cement to attach the plasticard to the paint lids (gorilla glue doesn't work on the smooth plastic of the paint lids, but i was thinking that it could work on plasticard, if I sanded it).
This is a warjack (i forget what the name is; it is the cygnar light one with the twin cannon and the hammer) that i converted into an iron warriors obliterator.
This is a deff dread that my plague marines/iron warriors gave to the orks (in the guise of a painboss known as "Bad "Dok Bill," who always puts his patients to sleep before he starts working). He now has legs, and 4 dccw (the gun has been removed since the picture was taken).
Comments and cc are greatly appreciated... or else
Rivets, eh? I do have some copper wire, a hammer, and a bit of experience with metalwork. What I'm wondering is whether the plastic for the goggles would break. I could always try with a spare lid, but I'll have to be careful when using the hammer...
I googled the antique chair thing, and I may do a smaller version of that, as in thinner than the handle of a gw fine detail brush. Would that work?
Thanks, vik! I'll have to wait to take pics until at least 9 tonight (-5 gmt) as I don't have the model with me right now. I have other things to take pics of, so that will be on the list. I am farther along, now, too.
a steampunk bee and flower (the bee will be attatched to the flower as though he/she is drinking out of it, and the parts will be assembled as shown). Note the machine gun stinger, and bullet abdomen,
Steampunk boiler made out of clay: I made it in art class, just for fun. I painted it using acrylics.
steampunk rat spirit (or rat servo skull ) I found the skull a few years ago picking apart an owl pellet for science class. I also have a necklace with a similar skull. I may add leds to this one, eventually...
Two pictures of steampunk terminators. I will also make some with cigarette lighter parts for heads/helmets.
Spoiler:
Magnets! I tricked you with magnets!
Et voila, the steampunk walker, commanded by none other than the magnificent Sir William Williams (aka Fabulous billy (no relation) aka bad dok bill aka lord steve) I still need to finish adding rivets. Then, it's off to the paint splatterer (as soon as I get more paint ) he has a rivet gun and riveting hammer for double the rivet power! He counts as either a daemon prince or greater daemon from the chaos list, for though he is not alinged with the actual chaos gods, he decided that he might as well ally with the red rings of death (plague marines) as they share a common goal (and a common love for technology )
somehow your update escaped me...i know for sure i have subsrcibed to yon thread...
well anyways^^
that steampunky flower and bee "diorama" is a very nice touch... also one has to admire the use of actual brass and other metals...i like the look of both...that will be a nice artpiece.
soryy...not much is to be seen due to the pics of the ratskullhead...too much out of focus for me to comment atm on that one...
the boiler specially looks good due to the nice glowy effect of the furnace inside...!!!
the marines...well...i am not too sure about the big tooth (?) on one shoulder...the drill looks good...did that too recently on some steamknight marines i never yet finished...tho i dunno if i see here a paintjob at all? looks very crazy for me...?
as for the walker...i really like the concept...the rivets i am sorry to say all look wonky and mismatched... i would suggest redoing them if i were you... the hammer is freaking huge^^ was that a torch? tho i think it is cool looking i still feel it is a bit too big for that walker tho...
what i really would like to read here is what you used as bitz and pieces for the walker...btw...the pilot looks like a very good choice!
Thanks for the support, vik! Not sure if i would want to remove the rivets: I am pretty much done, now (after i took the picture), and i don't have much else to use (though if i find some small beads or something, I will replace the current rivets with those.) Maybe I won't paint it until i can find some decent rivets Anyway, as for the parts I used; I'm not sure if I know all of the parts that I used. I'll try: you were mostly right about the torch (booklight, to be exact), connected to bit from' an ork wrekkin ball, which in turn is connected to a flint gear (?) from a cigarette lighter (I don't smoke, I just pick up the metal trash of those who do), which is connected to a cylindrical bit of unknown origin (and a piston made from non-gw sprue), which is then, finally, connected to a cut up ork power klaw. The body is made out of a paint pot, with styrene posing for wood (i'll probably paint it metal, because the grain has been covered in superglue). The "face" is a clock face, with chaos spikes for hands, and a gear on top, with two lights for eyes (one is from a missile launcher, the other is from some military model kit.) I riveted the black part of the paint pot in the style that i would like to you se for the whole thing (cutting 3mm beads in half, then gluing them on), but I can't find enough beads (probably lost in the warpstorm in my room ) the hatch is from a rhino, and the guy on top is from the vintage miniatures bin at my flgs (75 cents!!!). he originally had a gun, but i cut it off, and used a toothpick for the pointing finger (I cut it shorter since the pic, so that he didn't look like he had a footlong cuban cigar ) i have no clue what the smokestack is, but i think it might have been from some sort of pen. the gears on the back are just that, from old watches. The other arm is from a mechwarrior mech, as are the legs. the rivet gun, however, is made from some vcr (?) part, probably from a button, and the tip is a piece of aluminum tube. the loincloth looking thing is from the chaos vehicle sprue, and the girder that he is stepping on is a piece of sprue.
Wow, I didn't think that I remembered all of that! The paintjob on the terminator is so naff because i didn't have all of the paints that i needed for the scheme. I just wanted to test it. I'll touch it up when i get all of the paints. The "tooth" is actually supposed to be from some space elephant, or something, and is a remnant from when I first built my nurgle terminators, and didn't have enough shoulder pads. I don't want to remove it, as i still don't have any extra termy shoulder pads If you liked the bee, you should see the steampunk soldiers that i made out of metal parts recently! they were so fun to make, and have a bit of a playmobil kind of style to them (mostly the leg area and the head). I will have to take pictures of them one of these days
of course i would like to see the steampunksoldiers! who wouldn´t!!!
as for the elephant tooth... don´t remove it...did i say so? havens forbid... if choasy looking terminators aren´t allowed to wear bigger than themselves accesoires on their gear then we are in deep trouble!
if you want some help with rivets...well...we are the riveteers after all^^.... cheap and slightly bigger ones you get from those round bitz form sprues... you know those bigger points...?
or you could go the holepunchset route, or the rod slice them off rivets route...or for really quick and easy made rivets...just use PVA glue and create very small dops that will cure to form rivets for you...
after mentioning the pointy finger i saw it too... at first i must have taken it for a gun...^^
Here are the steampunk soldiers! along with the second terminator.
Steampunk soldier: he may be small, his gun may be smaller, but he will be only one of many, so beware!
Steampunk juggernaut: he is about twice the size of the steampunk soldier, and five times more heavily armed probably only one one of him, though.
I am in the process of making a commander with a vehicle/command platform (which will be part steam train, part tank, and part battle chariot), so stay tuned for that.
And steampunk terminator number 2. Do you think that the head is too cartoony? I am not sure that i like the look, and I think that input is needed to make a decision.
By the way, the first two are not for warhammer, they are just random things that I made for fun, and they will not be painted, so they are finished (i still need a way to stabilize them though, I am thinking washers. what size washer would I need for the big one (considering that he is completely metal). Or should i somehow make some out of wood? I'm guessing that that would be too unstable though.
'Till next time!
that first steamsoldier looks really cute! nice idea and a cool choice of matrials... does he stand stable? the spring actually suggests unwanted movement?...
the lighter shoulderpads for the heavy solder look very convincing! the only nitpick i have to give here is the barreltip... it is lopsided and should be straigtened...
for supporting...hmmm... i beta bigger base from thin wood...then heavyly laddened with thicker washers would be a good idea... several washers tho as i think these could do with a sort of scenic base...just a washer would look too less...
by the way... what do you use for sticking things together? the bare metal looks a bit corroded...? just your schtick or what?
i think the terminator head looks good...tho cartoony as you stated... what i would change is get rit of that topping...the green and white stuff on top... yes he is kinda bigheaded but i guess that´s the charm of the mini really! by the way...the head will look substantially different once primed...and primed it should be as i don´t think using regular paint on that slippery metal would work...!
cheers, vik
and boy you have a nice bunch of creative juices inside you!
Neither of them stand stable yet, but wood sounds like it could work, I think.
I will have to see what I can do about that barrel, I"m pretty sure that I could just remove it and reglue it (it may destabilize the piece, plus I am out of the epoxy that i used).
The reason that the metal is corroded is because I found it that way Yep, almost all of the material I found on the ground, barring stuff like the perforated metal, the wire, and the tube.
The green and white stuff on the terminator's head is to cover the top of the lighter, otherwise one could see through the top of his head, and beyond that, the ground Thanks for the compliments. by the way.
Well, what I really need to keep going is more epoxy, as they didn't have the cheap kind at hobbytown; I got a t-34/85 kit instead for epic. I have tons upon tons of materials, though, including some that i am saving for use as the aforementioned steam tank.
No, i did not post this just to say that, if that's what you're thinking
Steam tank. I was going to do treads, but I realized that it would have driven me insane so I just added what was originally going to be the suspension, and may think of adding tracks once my sanity is no longer an issue (any time, now...)
This is my dragonfly. I am giving it to a local antique/collectible shop to sell. I need to make the "flying stem" sturdier, as it kind of broke (I'm thinking of drilling a hole into the bottom of the dragonfly, and gluing the stem to that, but i'm not sure if that would work, as all I have is a dremel, and i don't want to damage the dragonfly further)
Steampunk spider. I almost hope that this one doesn't sell! It is one of my best works in this medium so far. I'll always have pictures, though, and those are enough for me.
Coming (somewhat) soon: mortar, gunslinger, based soldiers, and possibly more soldiers. Until then, this is Glomscient, signing off (though not logging off, i hardly ever do that)
Thanks! The mesh is from a valentines day chocolate box (though I would imagine pencil holders and the like would be more likely sources, look in staples, or something: it could be found there (tell me if it is )
As for the goggles, you need hard points, not glue if you are going to add an elastic band to it. Otherwise you'll go to put it on your head and it will break.
Thanks, vik! I have a bicycle chain that I tried to cut, but I couldn't even cut it with a razor saw. Anyone know how to cut the stuff?
Edit: oh, and the dragonfly is made out of some electrical bit, and the tail... not quite sure.
those soldiers look so cute! remind me of some sorry looking robots...like
from the movie the black hole...
woth pieces like the mortar you truly have created something new for the genre! their pose is really cute yet with a spin to the sad looking! i really like that!
the two lil twins made from those winged screws are a good example of your ideas... a most unique way to exress your cool creative skills!
Automatically Appended Next Post: i would maybe use a steal saw... you get that in some hardware shop... your diamond saw would probably get ruined soon by the attempt...
Thanks! I haven't seen that movie, but I see the resemblance.
By a steel saw, do you mean a saw that is made of steel, or a saw specifically for cutting steel? My dad may have something like that, otherwise I could go down to the hardware shop next week to pick one up (though I would need to find the chain first...)
well i would test your dads tools first ... in a good sorted workstation you are bound to find something like that rather easily! and it is special hardened steel that the saw is made from... designed to gnaw its way through the topmost dense stuff like...er...steel^^
buying a new one i would deem a bit on the expensive side tho...
and well the movie is as classic as scifi you can go^^
I found the chain. Not a whole lot of good that''ll do me, being unable to cut it and all stupid bike part makers Anyway, time for more pictures!
Steampunk fighter plane: ready for takeoff. Does anyone know what I used for the wings (back and front)? Because I don't.
Timetable . I was bored
Steampunk Juggernaut mk II. He has a hand cannon, and a hat.
Steampunk Soldier mk III. He has a flamethrower. Also, like the juggernaut, he also has a hat.
Steampunk tank mk II. The tracks were what I was planning on using for the first one (don't worry, though, plenty more where that came from [found it on the side of a road ]).
And now for something only marginally different (which is something completely different from what you're probably used to hearing, hopefully )
Spoiler:
Steampunk dragon father. He is mostly made of sculpey, as is the egg. I painted him afterwards, of course.
"What do you mean "of course," you never paint anything on this blog!"
shut up.
the tank... now this is a cool looking shape... can you show the track material in the unbended form? would be nice!
and of course do your fighters need to wear hats... you gotta protect yon head!!!^^
the timetable prooves one thing... boredom is nothing we have to be afraid of... those with an ounce of creativity in us will take this as oportunity time^^ get bored more often as this is very cool looking...
and the fighter plane has you back on track with cuteness... lovley piece right there... and no... i can´t tell what the wings are made of... best guess is metal but nothing further...
Thanks, guys They may be latches; I found one near our parking space when we went to the amusement park (Kennywood, It was fun!). That one still hasn't been used yet, though I may use it for the tail of my steampunk bomber. Actually, I think I'll work on that now. Pics (hopefully, but not likely) tomorrow (including the track material)
I think of it as a bit more of a lightning gun (maybe the can is canned lightning?)
Thanks! It is actually in blitza-bommer mode right now, but thanks to the wonders of magnets, I can switch it to be a dakkajet (decided against the burna-bommer, though, partly as It only came with one gunner)
Spam can? I used a stripped soda can for the gun, and a tea tin with a part of an oil lamp on top for the building. I am actually a vegetarian, so I would not have a spam can handy I would always say "eew, spam" whenever I passed it in the grocery store.
and the ray gun or whatever looks very good! i can just imagne you shooting it cocked to the side in a mean gangsta pose... that would be the fitting way to wiled that one!
as for the other inis... sadly you mostyl only provide one shot for those nice minis so that we can´t really say how they look... one shot is most of the times not really that helpful...as we can only see them in 2D and for a good view you need that odd extra angle...tho from what i can say... the SOB looks very good paint wise and the GS work on that melta bolter conversion makes me ask again for more shots... and the bomma... very cool looking... is that verdigris on that bomb?
Thanks! I don't have the minis with me right now, but I have one picture of the melta conversion that I haven't posted yet.
btw, that isn't verdigris: it is what I thought was the same blue I used for the panels, but I was wrong
Lobo? Like the variation on little red riding hood?
Good news, everyone! I am making a second pistol, and this one will have little copper "rivets" (copper wire cut down to little nubs: that is a major p.i.t.a. by the way). It will be held like a terminator assault cannon, but it will be pistol sized, and will be more like an ork shoota (sort of).
Thanks! Yeah, the rivets are difficult (especially because I cut them with a knife)
That's why I will take a break from it to work on a suit of armor/power fist/face mask. I am thinking metal plates attached to belts and the like, similar to an ork.
Thanks!
It would probably be one of those 4"x4" size ones, otherwise, I will have nowhere to put it!
The armor is mostly done.
Checklist:
heart cover (belt with metal disc bolted on).
check
Gas mask (got it at an anime convention).
check
Goggles (same as gas mask).
check'
hockey mask (got it at thrift store, just a grid shape, I added copper wire to it to wrap it around my head. It may be a football mask, actually...).
check
power fist (some kind of bulky sports glove with fingers. I may add more to it, and will probably need to repaint it.).
check?
pants (any old pair that works with the rest of it)
check
shirt (long-sleeved under armor-type stuff).
check
Trench coat (for added badassery)
check
loin"cloth" (actually a metal plate with copper wire threaded/wrapped around it, then tied around my waist)
check
And the only thing I had to glue was the chestplate.
the list sounds very good... but a hockey mask, gasmask and soe goggles... are you aiming for different looks and outfits or do you want that added to one setup?
Actually, now that I think about it, it is probably an American football mask, as they are known as gridiron, and that is pretty much what this is. I put it on so that the gasmask fits, and I think that the goggles should too. Yeah, one whole thing. Maybe not really until winter, though...
Oh, I'm pretty much finished with the assembly: can't get pics until my dad gets home, though, as it would be almost impossible for me to take pictures of myself with the outfit on also, the hand that doesn't have the power fist will have the first pistol. You'll see what I mean.
It would probably take longer to get a tripod than it would for my dad to be back (especially because I don't drive). It would be useful for later things, though.
if you work on the glove some more... lenghthen it a bit more you got yourself a good working Powerfuist already! some cables too!
the goggles look good and the mask too... maybe you paint them in a nice brass look?
what i am not feeling too good about is the trenchcoat... that is a bit out of style with the rest... if possible a cool looking frock would be a better thing... and a tophat too^^
and it looks as if your gun could do with some fleshing out... it looks a bit weedy in your hand in parts...
but in essence you have the right ingredients for cool costume!
Thanks! The gun looks weedy with the angle, I think. I did kind of go for a bit of a bare bones look, though. I don't think that my tophat would fit and the trenchcoat has been swapped out for a nice black steampunk coat.
Also: I mentioned epic earlier (once). So here is some stuff
Thanks! I also sculpted the commissar myself.
Congrats on the ebay victory! One good way you could make more would be to use shower heads. That's what I did I'm working on an epic scale savage gunship, which i s going to be a little over 30 cm. That should occupy me for a good while (unless my adhd takes me off in a different direction )
At this exact moment, however, I am working on a warhound titan (also for epic) made out of all sorts of bitz. Unfortunately, I can't find my camera cable, so I can't post pics yet.
Thanks! The shower head is for epic. I am now working on epic basilisks made out of chainsword bits, space marine backpacks, sprue, and plastic tube, while the warhound dries.
I've worked with kids before, so I know what that's like Anyway, I've found irrefutable proof that I have adhd: I stopped work on my epic stuff last night, to continue work on this:
(actually, it started as me working on a diorama, now I am back into fantasy
well... i´d be very careful to use that badly coined term mate... too many peeps use it with too little knowledge about it... even docs...
and switching to fantasy as a sign for that... no way^^... cool looking giant... that is the chaos head iirc... i always would have gone for the other option, but that´s just personal taste...
and the bunch of lil goblins... cheerful lot!... and if i am right quite old ones too...
Well, the one who diagnosed me may have been one of those, but judging by all of my unfinished models, I doubt it . Unless you mean irrefutable, but I was exaggerating there Anyway, the diorama is
Spoiler:
two nigh goblins watching tv (which is being held by a gnoblar), eating mushrooms, drinking fungus beer, and pointing angrily at the tv wih a remote, while a human runs away from the scene (the one from the giant, who, by the way, uses the ork head.
The night gobbos are the current ones, except for one of the squig hoppers: because, apparently, my flgs likes giving customers very welcome surprises, like a classic squig hopper mixed in, instead of a duplicate Oh, and three squig hoppers are converted from squigs, gobbos, and bitz. And did you really take a good look at the squig hopper close up? Warning: not for the faint of stomach
Thanks! Yes, that is what he is doing, though not voluntarily. Shaman after the battle: "I told ya not ta eat dat mushroom! Tried it meself once, got me da runz I did..." The diorama is going pretty well, I painted some today, though not much. I want to make it look dark, with the only light coming from the tv. I'm thinking that painting the whole thing, washing i with a really dark blue-black, and then doing the osl. I am wondering if that would work?
if you can pull off the OSL at all... then that would look cool... i have no doubt... for me OSL is still a closed book... in a libary i can´t enter atm^^
a scratchbuild or a kit? i am not that firm with BFG... but it seems you have yor hand into so many things!! good looking by the way... is the base done? looks a bit like starfield...
I have ADHD too...The meds I have been on for the past several years could be considered "hobby enhancing drugs" at times, it really helps me focus, although I still start waay too many projects as well, that's just the sign of a creative person
Those meds obviously work wonders, judging by your latest project, especially! I could never stick with one project for so long.
I am currently working on a female steampunk battle mage, and the only reason I will be able to finish this one is the fact that she can be buit in one day!
well... i wouldn´t judge too qucik with such diagnosis... but i went there already...
as for your new update... mate... a "=][_=" badge?... do we see a new acolyte here aspiring to the ranks of the league?...
is that copper? or merely painted to look like copper?
and the new tanks/bvehicles show much creativity... but i speak my mind freely here when i say...mate... with your high class ideas taking physical form...you definatly need to get your painting to match your building... i see what you want to create but the painting side of the hobby drags your models done a bit... which is a bloody shame as you chuck out brillaint stuff indeed... those roofparts look very cool... and the whole battletank altogether... same goes for the orky DE merger... but the paintjob... you get my drift...?
Thanks! That's real copper by the way, held together by rivets I know what you mean about the paint: I've always considered myself more of a builder than a painter. I am slowly improving, though. I am currently painting my scratchbuilt imperial bfg stuff (In the standard scheme, as I couldn't be bothered to think of my own scheme ).
well... mister... working with real copper to get a riveted badge of the "=][_=" ...that is earning you the right to wield the banner... you do know how to get it in your sig? if you are still questionng what i am saying.... you= league member...
i call that extraordinary riveting... and that´s in need for acknowledgment! you earned it!
klick on the banner on my sig...this openes up the gallery link... copy the link as you would do a pic for the thread into your sig in your profile, add ... tada... ^^
Thanks, Vik! I am currently working on a celebratory riveting project: an ork dakka shop! I am addng the rivets as we speak, and it even has a padlock!
Thanks, guys! The shop is mostly built from a piece from an old printer. It is sort of rectangular, but one long side is slanted down. 'The rivets are from the pirates constructable strategy game cards, punched out with a leather punch.
holy gak!.... that last pic was a bit on the creepy side glom!... looks like a murder tool^^ your dirty hands and all^^...
i really like the padlock... nice detail there... and the window front... that curogated look on them... cool... but since you started with so many close together rivets you are bound to do lots and lost more...enter rivet heaven^^
Thanks! Yeah, the last pic is a bit on the creepy side . Just think of it as one of those old Russian propaganda posters: the ones with the riveting hammers .
I think that the "window" of which you speak is either the big special board, or the odm (orkymatik dakka masheen) "menu board", like the ones on vending machines. As to the rivet comment: I'm not even done with the front yet!
and i meant all those small ones on the left side... the whole reminds me strongly of a desert diner...you could do it witha big flat roof on top... and so on^^
I know those, I just didn't know about that name for them. I thought you meant something made out of adobe, or something I see what you mean, though. But the back is slanted on mine: the profile looks like an escalator.
Still up, I love all-nighters. In other news; dark eldar, maybe now, maybe saturday, when I can get some more models and paints (maybe (see a pattern here?)).
Oh, I'm sure she won't mind; most of the models I am working on aren't exactly recent acquisitions .
Here are some pictures of my old de which have fallen into disrepair/looting by orks this is one of the few finished ones that remain. still need to glue an arm and the base back on and another finished one. Where did that blade go, again?
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/listProducts.jsp?catId=cat440170a There, the talos, wracks, grotesque, haemonculus, and urien rakarth are what I was talking about, though there are others, like the lhmean (sp?).
I was about to try to post links to both the German and U.S. sites, but it turns out that it goes to whichever one you last used on your computer. How very convenient (usually )
Automatically Appended Next Post: Zog me, I iz out a soopa gloo!
Hey Glom, welcome to the League! Crazy stuff you have going on here, really respect the creativity! Also dig seeing someone else using paper rivets. Quick and easy!
Thanks! I got superglue, so I should be finished building either today or tomorrow. Also, I am working on "da dropz", so expect even more ork smelliness! By the way, skalk, I used plastic rivets- punched out of a really annoying constructable strategy game (google "pirates of the spanish main"). Also, some are from mechwarrior (not battletech) pilot/gear cards. Paper rivets sound interesting, though; how are those done?
and i woulnd´t use paper... use cardboard rivets instead... then you can do with PVA what you earlier did with superglue... savings on the materials...not to be sneezed at
I have just started a "secret" project" here are some hints
It involves a big bucket, a tube, a commissar hat, and lots of rivets.
And i am also making a 7" cardboard circle
my GF??..LOL she would giggle that's all We'll be watching How It's Made on the Science Channel and she'll giggle and say "He said knob" or "he said penetration"
Yes, vik, it is a stompa! you win the prize of knowing that you won! And it will be a blood axe one, too- complete with a giant kommissar hat! I will probably make the hat out of paper mache, with a base structure made of a cut up circle, as well as the strange bit that gave me the idea!
dsteingass wrote:my GF??..LOL she would giggle that's all We'll be watching How It's Made on the Science Channel and she'll giggle and say "He said knob" or "he said penetration"
I don't even know what the part is Also, I'm going to use the gauze method from dave's thread on the stompa, because it is a blood axe. There will be hazard stripes, for the "lol" factor. It will have rhinos for feet, and a chainsword with "evereefink on it!"
Though I believe I have run out of glue, again...
ah my youngling... you were but a wee seed in your fathers...*?&$%&/ back then i guess^^
never heard of saturday night live?...ALL the best american comedians showed up there before they got famous for real!
lol... serial super glue fail LOL...
rhino for feet? wow... a bit steep isn´t it? does this model have to be able to be played at a GW shop? just asking... otherwise i would suggest you get a nice track propelled toy... chopp it apart and you probably save millllions^^
I've heard of saturday night live, I just haven't heard of that skit before.
Rhinos for feet: because old rhinos, and I'm too lazy to go out and buy something Besides, they were dismantled with other plans recently, I just decided that they would be better for this.
It's a toy from Rite Aid (a pharmacy, though it's almost like a suburban convenience store). It was about $5-$10, American. Not much modification: cereal box card for the window covers and armor, a chimera turret for the "multilaser", a scout heavy bolter, both guns are magnetized, just in case. I also added a flag and a bedroll. Still needs to be finished, of course.
No shots, yet, but I have just acquired a sentinel, some spray primer, some paints, and a new brush.
Also, I can't take credit for the wheelbike idea, it wasn't originally mine: http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-viewimage.jsp?i=340834 You guys should really check out his work: it's really cool!
So, now I have two sentinels- one with an autocannon and smoke launchers, and another with a heavy flamer, smoke launchers, and a future camo net. That will be my fast attack
Thanks! The turbines are actually from superglue caps; there is a huge variety: something you'd discover, if you used as much superglue as I do (good luck: I use more of that than water in the summertime!)
lol... i am still a bit tnese when working with it... even when i am wearing gloves for protection... my first attempts kind of made me a bit too afraid of the stuff later on...
Thanks! I use superglue pretty much exclusively: I can't do what I do with just plastic glue, and I spend enough on glue as it is!
Just primed the sentinel, some catachan veterans, and a chimera. The baneblade is not primed yet, as I want it to have my exclusive attention.
Automatically Appended Next Post: How about some old catachan pics?
They "forgot" to hang this one, he's just too funny
Harker. I may give him a different name though. Any ideas?
This guy was promoted to company commander! Look in the gallery to see his name.
My counts-as marbo! He is kicking the demo charge.
This is the ccs before the promotion of the current commander, and the painting of the armored staff car.
the harker you could name tiny... always makes sense to name such hulks that way and red? lol... leader of the blue team... hahaha^^ i bet he looks more´n just stern when you don´t call him SIR^^
I like tiny And I named him Red because of a character from a certain show from the 70's that looks like him. He is no longer in charge of blue platoon: it no longer exists. Now he commands the whole army, as the old c.o. looked too weedy. Think of him as the Foreman. Also, I'm working on the sentinel, and it looks pretty good so far imho. I did the green, brown stripes, black stripes, and metals. Now for the details
glomscient wrote:Thanks, I like the name "Razor Bike," it sounds very catachan! @shaso: the turret is part of the toy I used, if you mean the baneblade.
Yes, your Baneblade is the one I was curious about
Thanks! You can tell where I got the idea for the camo netting, right? He also says many clever sayings, almost exclusively involving the words "my", "foot" "up", "your", and "ass".
I went to the thrift store and got:
-some "snow-tex", to try and make mud
-dowel rods, for oil barrels
-some weird plastic thingies, for buildings
-and a container full of oil paints, some brushes, some medium, and some acrylic black
all for under $10!
I am testing the mud now.
and the sentinel looks not too shabby... the camo i really like... tho i have to be blunt honest with you... the detailwork such as the door handle and the tiny LED´s on the side... look a bit smudgy... what size of brush do you use? and for that matter... do you hold your breath while painting? do you rest your hand on the desk or do you paint with free hands? if the later... try to rest your hands... thus you eliminate some of the micro movements in your hands...(aka trembling...)
I'm not really going fully into oils, I just use them for weathering sometimes.
The smudges are mostly from painting while the wash wasn't completely dry . I really need to be more patient!
as for the plastic things, I'll probably take pictures when I build the first building. Right now, It's time for me to work on my epic orks!
My dad can be even worse than I am, always rushing me.
By the way, I just finished "Tiny"'s squad, pictures maybe tomorrow: I need to do the bases, and I'm pretty much out of pva!
Thanks! The red-haired, bearded man is wearing a kilt (albeit a long one), which, like his head, are from the flagellant kit, which comes with all sorts of great bitz: especially for penal legions (which I will work on as soon as I get superglue).
And the lasguns count as shotguns: they also have ammo drums made from those round bitz that are on sprues.
i thought it was from the flagelant kit but wasn´t sure enough...
ah... autoshotguns... nice one... if you are interested... have a look at my steampunk vets... i used curtain hook rolls for amo drum mags ...they have a slim lipped look to them that adds a nice texture to the mag...
looks like a Bridgestone BT-106, a commin tire choice for the BMW touring bikes. judging by its size, I'd say that was a Miasto BMW R1150RT or a R1200T.
It was a toy motorcycle, that's pretty much all I know. I think you're probably right though. I'm now in the process of making a steampunk automobile- this should be fun.
I am currently working on chaos space marines, and I have a feeling that, when the codex comes out, my army list will be "one of everything, and a diet coke."
Automatically Appended Next Post: Quick question: if I have iron warriors, plague marines, and steampunk chaos dwarves (count as 1k sons), should I make the iron warriors and steampunk guys slightly gross, to tie in with the plague marines? I was sort of thinking plague marines and iron warriors dirty, and steampunk division clean. Do you guys think that makes sense?
Unfinished- due to my need for chaos.
Soot. That could work...
Also, I am working on my first predator! It is a conversion, but hey, does your predator model have enhanced armor where it should be? How about a tiger turret? Skull for a targeter? Yeah, didn't think so Pics tomorrow, maybe...
and depending on the backround... i have seen and read stuff about dwarves that depict them as pretty ugly and dirty fellas... who would make even papa nurgle proud^^
Wip pics are for people who take more than a day to finish a model. And wear shirts when doing it... You know what they say: what drinks copious amounts of alcohol, must expel copious amounts of vomit! The predator in game has heavier front armor, the model does not. I fixed this with my version (which doesn't require the actual predator kit, btw).
In other news, I finished my steampunk vehicle, which is now a truck. It i definitely one of my larger works, may even turn it into a diorama!
That's a nice supply drop Glom! Oils take FOREVER to dry, you can move those around for hours over a gloss coat. Get some floor wax with Future..you can brush it on, and the big bottle will last you forever!
I really dig the sentinel..especially the top! You should do an artillery scene, with the camo net overhead!
Thanks! I think that my laziness overrides my cheapness when it comes to future, though: I already have gloss varnish. Artillery scene, you say? I am kind of hankering for some hobbytown heavy...
Unfortunately, the truck will have to wait until after the weekend. I am going to my mom's house today, and won't have room for the truck. I will be taking pictures of the Iron Warriors, though. if only to hold you over.
I just realized that both my camera and the truck are right next to me, so the pictures (which I just took) should be here today. also: you shouldn't wear a shirt while supergluing, at least if you're like me: superglue + cotton = burns, and, possibly fire. trust me, I learned this the hard way
It can seep through the clothes to cause burns, too. It also happens with wool. And if you spill too much, it can start a fire (haven't had this happen to me, probably because of the shirt thing )
Also, sorry I didn't post pictures yesterday, I hadn't unpacked my computer yet. Here they are, though.
Where is this convention? I don't travel very often, and when I do, it's mostly family vacations. Though if it's in Baltimore, I might be able to persuade my family to visit my sister, and take a little "detour".
Also, when is it?
That sounds really cool! I am currently working on some 1/72 scale steampunk models (I'm modifying them to be steampunk). I am planning to leave for hobbytown in about 10 minutes.
@vik: What's there to be sorry about?
Iron warriors predator coming soon: I am currently prepping the model for oil washes: the gloss varnish now needs to dry. The question I posted on Dave's blog was for a 1/72 scale spad biplane: which I don't feel ready to show, yet (but if you can persuade me...).
Rivets within, Rivets without!
The only bigger ones I have found can be described thusly: "Big like predator, priced like thunderbolt!" Yeah, $100 for a big thing of glue! I wonder what day of the week I would run out of it if I bought it now ! What I really need is a precision tip, and more focus/patience.
I buy 2OZ bottles from my FLHS, they come from very thin to very thick, you should get some accellerator too, put it in a syringe so you can carefully apply it 1 drop at a time.
a DEATH SEG WAY (WHERE IS YOUR CHAOS GODS NOW??!!) love it!
sn't that a Tiger Tank turret on that predator? i got a Demolisher that would make a good bro to that Predator. a Rhino salvaged with a SHerman tank turret and has a lascannon and heavy flamers!
The Steam Tank looks sweet too. WHat kind of M3 Lee model kit you use? I have a M3 Lee Malcador Annialator (loads of las cannons, plus a demolisher cannon) the Old Ork Crusha!
Thanks! You are right about the predator turret, and the m3 is a 1/72 scale kit from hasegawa. I have been doing some 1/72 steampunk stuff, including the plane, and a whole mess of infantry (not much conversion work done on them, though. The steampunk will be mostly in the paintjobs).
hey...there is a spot on your hand not covered in paint lol...
and the segway made me lol...hopefully i will never have to ride one of these^^
the steamtank is indeed a cool idea...lots of nice details added there... specially ornamental wheel on the stack... that idea is so nicked^^
and are those lil thingummies on the plane tesla coils? i think i need to investigate in that look...and 100$ for a bigger bottle of superglue??? WTF... i think you should visit your famous walmart or something instead of foing shopping in a backalley
The tesla coils are from epic ork shokk attack guns. not even sure they make those anymore. Should be easy to scratchbuild, though: ring/disc, 3 spherical objects and a small cylinder for each, and an optional connecting barrel. And the superglue was from ebay, it's industrial stuff, not normal superglue (I think). And no, I didn't buy it. Never will...
@Dave: Thanks! I have a lot of 1/72 scale infantry unassembled now, but I'll keep that in mind for when I run out and have some spare bitz... What would you want, in that case? I do have quite the intriguing bitz box., though much of it is not warhammer. I would love to see what you could do with stuff from circuitboards
Thanks, cheese! I am currently making a steampunk jellyfish, and the hardest part is attaching it to the stand! I found a way, I just need to be incredibly patient in waiting for the glue to dry...
I've used them for explosives, before.
Also, the jellyfish is done, I will take pictures when I pick most of the glue off of my hands . I just hope it holds...
It can also be used for rivets. I can take my perforated metal, put it on the pad, then push a piece of sprue onto the metal, I can make uniform rivets! I will need a sharper blade, first.
I remember that. But with the melting sprue method, the rivets are easier to remove and use elsewhere. It wasn't my idea, by the way. It comes from some tutorial site. I just found a way to do it without the neighborhood ne'er-do-wells asking me for a "squib" (Apparently, it means cigarette...)
You figured out what I used for the unit of five, How about the greater daemon, herald (a really tricky one), and the lone plaguebearer?
Also, I finished a steampunk motorcycle. I am getting tired, so that will probably have to wait until tomorrow. Unless the pizza rejuvenates me (the smell may be all it takes ).
for the greater demon... that´s got to be an ogre for the most part...
the rest you got to show alone again so to better see them and see what is what...
and wow... yes i agree that nid looks very good... gotta agree with the statement of yours... give it a slight wash and yer all golden with that one...
that swinging pose for Matt kingsley looks very badass!!!
and i like the steampunk sorceress...!!! very cute...
Thanks! You're right about the greater daemon, But I'm not sure you'll ever get the herald, and the lone daemon (now in a unit of his own) should be discernible from the pictures.
Here is a cryptic hint: Phoebe's crow. You already got the crow part...
could you just point out which minis we are talking about now? i like that guessing bitz game but atm i am at a loss about which mini we are talking about...
Also, I'm making epidemius: his palanquin will be carried by four plaguebearers, and he will sit in a chair made from craft sticks, with his legs made from modified 1/35 scale legs from a tank. I was planning to do fly/screamers and maggot/flamers, but I can't resist the awesome of epidemius! Plus, I want a good reason to take nurglings.
ok...still didn´t use the spoilers... my guess is... the lone plague bearer was made from a beastman...
and the herald is definatly not a GW model with that cleaver...
after hitting the submit button i will open the spoilertags...
Automatically Appended Next Post: HA!!!!! i knew i could do it^^...ok... didn´t think it could have been from heroquest the heralds base mini... but i was spot on with the beastman^^
But what kind of gun? the butchered static grass container should be a good hint Also, I just bought some new plaguebearers from my flgs, because they didn't have the daemon codex, and I Had to get something! have to admit, though, they are a great kit!
I don't even know!
Anyway, what I have for my daemon army so far:
great unclean one
epidemius with 6 plaguebearers for his unit
herald of nurgle with 6 plaguebearers for his unit
3 nurgling bases
7 plaguebearers
a daemon prince
maybe another daemon prince
maybe some beasts of nurgle
Each unit of plaguebearers has an icon, and the dp has wings. I also have a plaguebearer left on the sprue spare, which may sometimes take the place of an icon/the herald.
I think that it should be enough: I don't have the codex, but most nurgle lists I've seen look similar. It also seems that, with epidemius, nurglings can become quite nasty!
That's 2 hq (epi and the herald each count as 1/2 of an hq choice), 4 troops (though only 3 are scoring units: the nurglings are swarms) 1 elites (if I use beasts of nurgle( and 1-2 heavy support (depending on whether or not I want to make a second from what I have. I probably will, for anti vehicle purposes). I am not sure how many points, but I'm thinking maybe in the ballpark of 1500 points. I will have to get the codex to be sure.
I have some great stuff to show you guys! There is the grenade launcher prop that I am still working on, and then there are my new best painted models: four of my plaguebearers! These are all exactly as they came in the kit, just as papa nurgle intended. I seem to be better at painting models that I build straight from the kit, for some reason...
Automatically Appended Next Post: gotta agree... thse minis sure looks very well done!!!
tho the one wileding that big sword high... he has a ´orrible moldline under his arm?
and grenade launcher... now that is something i didn´t think of... but with your aid i see what is what...
Thanks! I like that head too.
In other news, my Catachans with cybermarine allies, at the current status of what I could field (regardless of paint), is 2545! Next on the list is refurbishing my Land Raider. Here is a little rhyme about it:
Thought it was a battlewagon, Thought it was a train, The machine spirit, in the end, won, It's a land raider again. I love rhymes! I hate not having super glue, though...
Here is a picture of the land raider's former glory:
Here is what It used to look like. Hopefully It will look even better, as it has recently fallen into disrepair, the orks and chaos marines certainly did a number on it
Thanks! That is a lego hat. There are 5 assault termies, and a termy chaplain. The one that doesn't look like a termy is a sgt. He has big, beefy cardboard shoulder pads and shin guards.
I have had that land raider for a long time: it needs to be fixed, now. the engine is gone, as are the guns (the guns should be no problem, the engine- ) It also needs the front doors to be redone. The picture I have of it is old, It hardly looks anything like that, now
I don't see the rules problem with the ac, unless it has to do with it being non-gw. If it's the fact that the models are bringing their cover with them, one would simply ignore that for los purposes.
Or, if it is the fact that they are on a 60mm base, then you might need to check your codex
Edit
: At evildoctorcheese: It is merely an illusion, there are other things holding up the board, too; tupperware containers, etc.
Lol, I meant that the one with the green helmet was not lego, 'incase you thought that for some reason...
Pith helmets on an ogryn sounds awesome! don't forget to give them fancy pants: gives them a 1+ fancy save, when combined with the pith helmet
Did you custom make your Leman Russ Executioner turret? or is that the new kit? I have one of the old-skool Executioners with the metal autocannons I need to paint someday.
There once was a squad of Catachans on the planet Tiddycattus, accompanied by a Tiddycatian guide Ogryn, They were treading carefully, so as not to attract predators, when, suddenly, "foo... splat," a Catachan noticed that a bird had just pooped on his head, and wiped it off. He immediately died. This happened five times, before the sergeant said, "I suppose you don' know what happened to them six o' me men, do ya, guide Ogryn?"
And the Ogryn, being an annoyingly cryptic speaker, at least for an Ogryn said, "When da Foo s, wear it."
Also, I am making an admech army, so you will hopefully see pics soon.
P.S., I have a ton of stuff that needs to be photographed and posted, including a dreadnought that I got at a comic book store for $10! That might happen tonight, or it might happen tomorrow. Or I might forget, in which case, feel free to remind me in any way you can.
Thanks, though I think that the height of the hat makes him look kind of Amish (the sideburns may contribute to that).
Also, I just got a landing craft for my 1:72 scale steampunk stuff! I will turn it into an airship.
isn´t it 1:72 scale? wouldn´t there be plenty of stuff all around to get models and tanks to be made from? you are not really then forced to pay FoW prices?
@Dave: I hear that there are other manufacturers, like plastic soldier company, that are cheaper.
@Vik: it is actually 1/100 scale, though I do have a lot of 1/72 scale stuff.
Anyway, here is what I have for flames of war:
-2 platoons of early-mid war panzergrenadiers, one platoon assembled, one base painted
-4 sdkfz 250 half tracks, two assembled
- a platoon of 2 8.8 cm (yes centimeters ) flak (anti aircraft: if firing shells the size of your head to blow up fast moving targets isn't orky, i don't know what is! ) guns, assembled completely except for the limbers.
-objective marker, painted (just cobbled it together from foam, mdf, artillery crew, spare ammo, etc)
-and a platoon of 5 panzer IV F2 tanks, all assembled, one painted.
I plan to paint more as soon as the weather gets better, because i use grey spray primer (yes, even for the tanks). I hope to be back to priming tuesday, I hear it will be 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Thanks for the compliments!
I'm back! here is a messload of flames of war to show you guys part of what I've been up to.
If you have any questions about the pictures, feel free to ask!
Thanks, guys!
@dave: These are all still works in progress, so that will have to wait until after the metals, faces, vehicle crew, and other details are done. Right now, however, I just discovered that some really old, metallic purple enamel spray paint still works, so I'm having a bit of fun with that on a 1/72 Japanese light tank. Probably going to add hot rod flames, too. should be fun! anyone have pointers on enamel paints, btw? I haven't really used them before.
