Pretty much what it says, how do you pick what army you want to play? Is it fluff, models, in game effectiveness, uniqueness, commonness? Personally I go mostly off of fluff and models, how about you guys?

I thought chaos was the coolest thing right after I got black reach. Before I started, I wanted to play dark eldar. Which was back then in the dark ages of dark eldar, where a new codex wasn't even on the horizon

Everything about CSM is awesome. I can't explain it. I just knew they fit.

Any game I play its either Necromancer/undead army or Paladin/holy warriors. Daemonhunters were purely metal and cost a feth ton, so I went Necrons. Went to Tyranids after that because I love Xenos... then Grey Knights since they fill my paladin-esque niche, now back to Necrons

Back in the mid 90s I played Space Wolves, which were probably the most despised army at the time. (Funny how history repeats itself.) When I got back into the game, I wanted to play a less popular army. Since I don't like to be the "bad guys" I went with Battle Sisters. I have no regrets.

Picked mine cause I like the daemonhunter/daemon idea. Its why I like diablo, paradise lost etc.. So I picked daemons and daemon hunters.. Eldar were fun too sinc they were fast.

I saw that Tau could use more "robot thingies" than Eldar.

I sorta regret saying that I also saw that the suits as "Gundam-esque", which also pulled me over; unfortunately proving the old and hated stereotype of Tau winning over anime lovers.

I bought AOBR gave the Marines to my son as there was no way I was going to play SM. That left Orks. But that was ok with me, used to collect orks when I was a kid so still had some old models.
I've started to collect DE because the models look good, and I didn't want another hoard army.

Nice, DE are good because of how you can run them as anything you want. CC, Shooty, Horde, Specialist, etc.

When I first started in the hobby I picked Imperial Guard as my army. I'd always entertained dreams of joining the Armed Forces, and as I was at that age of being obsessed with anything military (about 11-12), the Guard were the most logical step for me. Aliens/Xenos - never really appealled to me, nor did super-human Space Marines, but human soldiers were cool because I was going to be one when I was older!

Fast forward ten years to the release of the plastic Cadians. I'd not joined the army because of health complications, but the Imperial Guard still appealed only, as I was older, it was the background that started to grip me in it's massive fist. They're ordinary men & women dispatched to war against nasty things which would give any sane person nightmares, fighting with equipment which, whilst -very- effective against other humans has a tougher time against the xenos.
Just progressed from there. I dabbled in Grey Knights with the old Daemonhunters Codex, think that was during the Eye of Terror campaign, but I always went back to the Guard.

Now my Krieg army, which I am slowly building, is an extension of that love of the Guard. It might, however, be my last loyalist Imperial force, but at least it's the only 'standard' Imperial world/regiment that I truly love.

Then I decided that I had the marine models, I might as well have them too.
The when I saw GK in the back of WD in march, I said..

" I have Rhinos, Stormraven, a Razorback, Land Raids all which will be usable, so...

Shiny. Gimme."

That was before I even seen the codex. I still don't have it and I have an 18pt army.

I started with Eldar, then moved to Orks, then to Dark Eldar. Eldar were my favorite of the first two armies i played, so i chose Dark Eldar as my next, and so far im having a blast. The fluff is what origionally grabbed me, then the models, and then the playstyle.

Most of the armies in 40K are heavily derivative and targeted at certain demographics. It's part of what made 40K so popular. The fact that so many things (like Starcraft) have been derived from 40K and later become famous has only helped. The only shame you have is admitting to liking anime, not that liking anime was the reason you were drawn to the Tau.

Amerikon wrote:Back in the mid 90s I played Space Wolves, which were probably the most despised army at the time. (Funny how history repeats itself.)
The problem the Space Wolves have always had is that Games Workshop can never seem to balance them with the rest of the Space Marine armies. If you look at Grey Hunters versus Tactical Marines, the Grey Hunters do nearly everything the same or better, and end up being somewhat cheaper. Though, to be honest, I think this is more if a facet of the Tactical Marines being underpowered, and not the Grey Hunters being overpowered. In 2nd Edition, all Marines had a Bolter, Bolt Pistol, and Close Combat weapon as their basic loadout in tactical squads. The imbalance of the 2nd Edition Wolves came in their amusingly cheesy army choices (Wolf Guard abuse was the worst, heh).

My first ever time playing was as Squats that belonged to a friend of a friend. When I finally got my own army, I chose Space Marines because they came in the 2nd Edition box which had just come out, and at the time, I didn't really understand the sheer awesomeness that is Ork. I filled out my Space Marines before deciding I liked Imperial Guard and Tyranids too which also became a Genestealer Cult army. Then I had Fantasy Orcs which I spent hours and hours customizing (oh the countless blisters of snotlings...) so I stayed away from 40K Orcs even though they had by then become one of my favorite armies. When I came back to 40K, my buddy already had a giant, beautiful Tyranid army, so for the interest of differing forces I decided to rebuild and enhance my Imperial Guard. Then I saw all the brilliant things people were doing with converting bigger Space Marines, so that became my new quest, the poor Imperial Guard being swiftly forgotten as anything more than comparisons for scale to make sure my Marines were tall enough (as seen in my avatar).

I go with whatever has the models I like.

40k was easy. Tyranids are easily the best model range in the game. It helps that I dig their fluff as well.

Fantasy was harder. I look for a model range I like in its entirety, had HQ units that look great, and has some bigger centerpeice models I nearly went for Beastmen when I read about the Cygor and Gorgon, but they didn't have models, so I went with Vampire Counts. It was only missing a big centerpeice model that I liked. Then they released the Terrorgeist, and, well, I had my centerpeice model.

I never pick an army based on effectiveness. I can make a list that works for me from any codex, but I can't force myself to enjoy painting things I don't like the models of.

Well I chose Black Templars because they looked very appealing to a 12 year old kid that liked medieval and there religion sorta stuff back then, so I went with them. I grew up and got over them and I looked threw all the codexes and picked the models I liked so I picked Imperial guard, the catachan range, and then I picked up some cheap Cadians and have stuckw tih Cadians ever since and Because I only got 20 catachans I just forgot about them.

For God sakes don't play Guard and redunantly play leaf blower list....

I picked first army of WHF Chaos frankly because they looked great and I could use the models for D&D afterward. No one got into 40k or WHF for the game mechanics. They got into it because the mock battles on the Battleforce boxes and white dwarf pictures looked cool.

I'm uh going to be repeating myself in my introduction post.

I chose Orks because of the freedom I get with the army. From converting to fluff. I like that I can take this Sherman tank, and convert into a battle wagon. I like that I have my warband have it's own goal and fighting for some greater cause written by someone else because the codex fluff says so.

I don't treat my Orks as comedic relief, sure they're orks and they say funny things but what they do is far from comedic relief. BUT frankly, the very first day I started Warhammer 40k and looked up fluff and armies to be, Orks appealed to me the most because they were less serious than the rest of the races.

I picked Imperial Guard because I liked the idea of playing numbers. It seemed to me that I should do better with my dice spread out than all in one basket. I think it was watching my first game, where a Sanguinary Guard got wiped that put that image in my head.

I was gnashing about whether to play Orks or IG, but when I saw an IG sniper in a ghillie suit, I immediately bought Guard. I'm happy to find out that they are well-rounded and can take any tactic and run with it!

When I started there were only two armies not being played, Necrons and Eldar. Necrons seemed kinda cool and Eldar did too initially until I looked closer. At that point Necrons seemed like an unstoppable silver wave of nihilistic destruction and Eldar seemed like... arrogant "happy" clowns. Stayed with Necrons for a while then fiddled around with Chaos Space Marines for a bit, then I returned back to my Necrons.

i just played a game with my guard against the necrons, the guy brought 3 monoliths and like 80 warriors. I took down the monoliths by turn 3, but so many warriors...i couldnt hold them back...so many glancing shots...oh well, it finished close at 9-8 in kill points but a good game. Overall, the unstoppable silver wave can still be used, darn T4 against S3 lasguns!

Yeah, I used to have over 100 warriors which was fun to throw against my opponents. In hindsight I shouldn't have sold my Necron army to go dabble in CSM... Sigh, so stupid especially since I came back to Necrons

During one of our P&P evenings when we play the german equivalent of D&D, one of my friends had his ork codex lying around and I was flipping thorugh it. If found the story about the warboss going back in time to kill himself, so he could have his favorite gun twice, then I found the description of the shock attack gun, followed by the trukk and it's kareen! rule. Even though I had no idea what any of the rules actually did, I was close to tears of laughing by the time I reached Badruk. I so had to see the model of that pirate-ork and while searching sumbled across the awesome battlewagon model. That pretty much had me sold on orks already.

I was still unsure of the hobby, because I was never good at painting and didn't know whether I had any fun doing it, so I got a box of AOBR together with a friend and painted them up with that painting starter set. The first game we played was on a horribly wrong sized table with Lego-Terrain and we got slaughtered by a perfectly tailored Mech-Eldar opponent.

Then somehow a gaming table apeared in my living room with enough orks to cover the entire playing area.

My first army, Tau, I bought because they looked like proper science fiction.

I bought SMs because they came in the AoBR set and I had lots of classic Beaky models from the late 80s to early 90s. The vehicles are all conversions historical kits.

I bought Tyranids because the new codex came out and I have the idea of challenging myself to make an entire army of snake creatures in time to go to a tournament. This worked out quite well and it is my most complete army.

My final army, IG, I started because I got back into making historical model kits and decided to make the entire army from non-GW, historical models.

My first army was Necrons, after playing Dawn of war Soulstorm I liked having an implacable wall of death marching across the board.

After playing them on the tabletop and discovering that they were not at all like the computer game army, I got offered loads of orks from the AoBR box. I took them and have had loads of fun with them! I like their unpredictability, I love painting and modelling crazy vehicle conversions, and I like having a massive horde of guys!

At the moment though, I'm working on a Forge World army: Red Scorpions. It was a toss up between them and the Imperial Fists (For no other reason than I like yellow marines). I chose them because I think they look great, and fluffwise, in the far flung future of an extremely right wing universe, they are the most right wing of all the chapters. (Which is not my own political view I feel I should add!)

I'm only a little way into painting my Red Scorpions, just finishing my 2nd Tac squad!

I am using all FW conversion bits: Shoulder pads and Rhino doors. I have a set of the FW Red Scorpions vehicle symbols to create a bit of variety on my Rhinos/Razorbacks. When I get to the Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders, I plan to go completely FW. I'm loving the New (Old school) Land raider models. And it was the look of the FW veteran squads that first got me looking into the chapter.

And the Sevrin Loth model is perhaps the nicest looking Space marine model I have ever seen. His rules in IA9 kick ass too.

A bit of advice - start small. Big Forgeworld kits are extremely complicated, requiring a lot of pinning and green stuffing to fill joints or repair minor miscasts. Don't start on a Thunderhawk or Reaver titan - you'll hate yourself for trying.

I was about 11 or 12 when I started 40k about 94. I wanted to play imperial guard because the tanks were AMAZING and no one really played them being 50 bucks per 10. I couldn't decide on ice warriors of vallhala, or cadians, or chatachan, or talleran. So I told my parents to surprise me. Poof Mordians, thought wtf seriously? But 17 years later I still have them... And they sure as heck turn heads at games. Then I got into dwarfs cause I didn't need to buy the magic box add on so there was 50$ saved... and I still play them too.... I now am also collecting tyranids which I picked because there the opposite of guard. And dark elfs since there the opposite of dwarfs

I'm not 100% what my first army was. I have a touch of ADD when it comes to GW, well in the past more so. All I remember was picking up random things from GW from 1988, Space Hulk, Blood Bowl, Space Marine (Epic) the fantasy box with ten of each of six bad races, with this horrible white plastic.

At some point in 89 I got Rogue Trader, the Classic Space Orks box with the oval shoulder Plasma Cannons, a RTB01 and various metal figs followed.

Within the year of 1989, I starting to put my first army together, the problem is I had three armies before 2nd edition came out, and I'm not sure which was done first. I've tried to state one or another in the past in similar Dakka threads, but if I sit here and really think about it I'm honestly not sure.

My guess would be the Thousand Sons, I had a Space Marine (Epic) Traitor force of them, liked the red/orange paintjob I was doing on them at the time. (This was back when the Thousand Sons where red and had a black M on the pad, as per the side of the Space marine box. I believe another chapter took that scheme on the big Space Marine chapters poster BL released ages back, but originally it was the 1KSons scheme.)
I also had Siam Hann Eldar, with most of them being the cool metal Eldar Pirates figs, the guy with the huge melta pistol, the one holding a Missile Launcher on his shoulder and so on.

Finally I had a Death Skull army, which was larger than the other two, converted an old Action Force (GI Joe) Snowmobile into a Battewagon, and had a Borg'th Mnthrog 'Howitzer' model acting as the Warlord, with a Dark Elf Marauder Witch Elf conversion as his second in command. Odd looking back, but it was a fun army.

So there was no real rhyme or reason behind the choice, at the time I was a young man who discovered GW and was mightily impressed with the world, story and figures, and just picked up bits of everything.

I chose Tau because I love the battlesuits and the clean lines they have. Yes, they have a few aesthetic flaws (tiny ankles and bunny ears, anybody?), but to me, contrasting lightly colored armor plates with darker non-armored/soft parts just makes for a sweet-looking model. Not to mention that Tau have some awesome long-range firepower, despite their being outdated, and CAN win with the proper application of said firepower.

Next armies I'm looking at: Gray Knights, followed by a heavily mechanized IG army.

I started with the 3e box set in 98. It came with Marines and Dark Eldar, so I went with marines as most new folk do. They were definitely a lot more forgiving. I changed chapters so many times the base coats were getting goopy and detail on the models were lost.

I started Orks as a fun army, and they were. I also started the Necrons because I loved their fluff and appearance. I quit the hobby right after 4E was released.

I just recently got pulled back in when I was looking for a way to releave some stress. I loved the new Necron codex, so I dug out my old models. My orks were hit or miss because a lot of my old units didn't work any more and my marine models are just in crappy condition. The 'crons were in the best shape, so I decided they would be my first project. I love them as the hyperlogical space robots who slew their gods with science.

I was going to go to one of my old armies after the necrons, but I've been sucked in by the DE now: awesome fluff, awesome models. The DE being a fast, highly skilled, finesse army with close combat power will make a nice contrast to the slow, durable wall of necrons who can get steam rolled by cc nutters.

Is that a bad thing? I picked up the megaforce, which seems to be pushing me that way. I haven't actually built or played with the army yet. I realize wychcult is not as popular as kabal warrior venom spam, so I'll probably end up starting wyches and then adding kabal and coven elements to balance it out eventually. Is pure wych cult at all viable for a passable army? (I hesitate to use the word "competitive" because I doubt I'll ever play in a real tournament)

It is quite viable. Wyches are great CC troops and the Succubus is freakin top-notch. Don't bend to the Kabalite venom spam, it's horribly boring. I personally run a Kabalite list, but if I apoc the DE instead of starting =I= then I will blend with a wych cult

Like most people here, I started my first army (eldar) because of the models and to a only slightly lesser extent, the fluff. It turns out that making an army based solely on what models you think look cool is a good way to lose a LOT of games, especially when you're just starting out.

My second army (guard) was only slightly more sophisticated. I picked up a guard army for one reason - the basilisk. Basically, I wanted something that could wipe the floor with MSM tau suits, and the basilisk seemed basically THE way to do it.

I stayed with guard (unlike eldar) because I think the guard codex is probably the best one out there. It fits my troops-heavy play style, while also having a HUGE range of options. It's versatile, well balanced, and doesn't need cheese to win. I could play several different types of army and still be playing out of the guard codex. Other codecies are also good, but I'll never abandon the guard so long as they are such a well put together army (well, that and I have like 250 guardsmen...)

My choice of a third army (KHORNE!) was incredibly nuanced. Firstly, I wanted something that played to my love of close combat, which limited my choices quite a bit. Secondly, I wanted something that I could use my newly minted scratchbuilding skills with to really make each model a work of art. Not a horde army, I simply wouldn't have the patience to spend another 4 years on an army before playing it. Thirdly, I wanted to prove a power armor foot horde viable.

That still left a lot of options though, including codex marines, space wolves, blood angels, jetbike eldar, etc. What got me to chose chaos was in part my love of strong troops and HQ choices as per my preferred style, and CSM still has the best troops choices in my opinion. Also, I was starting to feel the call of running a "bad guy" army after spending years with a "good guy" one (eldar don't count, as they're just an "emo" army).

What got me to khorne was spending a lot of time with math, and finding that the numbers are just more favorable to an army full of berzerkers and MoK units than an army of nurgle stuff (especially in my prized close combat). Plus, I never liked nurgle's fluff.

What sealed the deal was that this was going to be a chance for me to do penance. I feel like I was a competitive jerk when playing my guard army, so I was going to start an army of competitive jerks to remind myself to be civil.

Plus, the turnaround time for a brand new khorne army would be a lot shorter than my guard army, and, due to my scratchbuilding stuff, it would be a heckuva lot cheaper too.

I think the odds of me having another army are very small. Perhaps I might at some point in the far future run tau (have a choppy army, a balanced army, and a shooty army), or strip down my old eldar models and bulk them up if they ever get a codex that I like.

Tyranids. There are a number of factors that draw me to them, but I'll simply list the top reasons.
I've always been interested in science fiction, especially the “what's out there?” aspect of it. Tyranids are pretty much the most alien race in 40K.
Another reason I like them is the fact that from 5 to 11 I lived near the gulf coast of Florida. I spent much of my time on the beaches there, resulting in my fascination with crustaceans... which Tyranids remind me of. Lastly, as much as I enjoy the "Alien" movie franchise, Ilike the design of the Tyranids better now, than I did when they more closely followed H.R. Giegers design.

Chose Imperial Guard mainly because of the very 'human' feel of the army. They're not armored-super soldiers or aliens, they're regular Joes doing the dirty work of smashing faces.

Not to mention they've got the best armor selection in the game.

Tyranids. I remember reading the 3rd edition Nid codex. There was a bit of fluff that was describing how silent a Tyranid assault was. I thought that would be a terrifying aspect if I were a guardsman fighting off a Tyranid assault. Just a silent, unrelenting horde, that couldnt be bargained or reasoned with. They dont care about who you are, or what you are, and they will end your life in the same way we as humans would squash an ant.

Thats a complicated issue for me. When I first started it was just Chaos, I loved it. It looked good, and it was something away from vanilla marines.

But then I got out for a few years, and inevitably slipped back into 40k, and now I'm running 5 armies. I think its based upon taste, and design. I like armies that have unique modelling involved, and I appreciate it wayyyy more than the gaming aspect. Dont get me wrong, Gaming is fun, but modelling is my passion.

I have to admit, Chaos is still my favorite. Its just so appealing to what I enjoy. Tau is a close second though haha

Each of my armies fits an aspect of my personality, or where I was at the time.

My CSM are renegades fighting for something to believe in
SM are crusaders lost in the Eye of Terror
Nids were released from the center of a planet during the Badab War
My Necrons are going to be from the old age of Warhammer, and run on steam
and my Tau are covert city fighters.

After reading a lot of black library books and playing a heap of Dawn of War, I knew I would have to collect some kind of Imperial army. If only to mention that "The Emperor Protects" whenever I make a saving throw roll. It's more than just that though, the over-zealous attitude of Imperial armies is one of the most appealing things to me in 40k.

I eventually settled on GKs because they are new and the plastic kits are simply amazing. Both the power armour and terminator armour kits are my favourite current kits, an absolute joy to both model and paint.

A mix of things.

First and foremost, the look of the army. Sisters of Battle, aside from being an entirely female army - I even have some proxies I use as Crusaders and Jacobus in place of the normal minis - also have aesthetics that I like, along with the whole theme of being holy warriors that I often enjoy.

The next thing I looked for was the playstyle. The Sisters of Battle, well, the way I play them seemed to work just fine at first. The White Dwarf Codex doesn't seem to work as well for me, unfortunately, but I probably just need more playtime with it.

The fluff came next. The Inquisition was too evil for me, so I didn't include any Inquisition units in my army - until I saw the Sister Hospitaler model. The holy warrior theme applies to the fluff as well, which was a strong point for me. At the time, I was unaware of how fanatical Sisters of Battle are, by which I mean their willingness to commit horrible acts to get at the heretics they're after. However, with a little bit of custom fluff magic, that was remedied as far as my own Sisters of Battle were concerned.

Effectiveness in gameplay is probably very low on my list. Though I enjoy winning, I only play against one opponent, who isn't a WAAC-type person, or even a normal powergamer, so I can make fun lists without fear of getting massacred.

The community's perception of the army also factors in for me. Even though I haven't played at a store in years, I don't want to be thought of as a person who chooses the most powerful army in order to win games with ease. If Sisters of Battle became overpowered, I'd probably enjoy them less and get discouraged from playing them, just knowing what people would be saying about the people who play them - like we've seen with Grey Knights players.

Baneblades are nukes that go off in the first turn killing their comrades

Mine is a self-built theme, fluff and all.

If I was gonna pick an existent theme, I'd do Word Bearers or Iron Warriors. Iron Warriors just because they have badass cyber parts. But Word Bearers are awesome, imo.

If you're trying to pick an army, shop around for a big force, and experiment with other armies. Find people that play other armies and fight them, you'll learn TONS more than by reading anything. I traded one WHFB army for two 40k armies, and haven't looked back. And I love almost every army, just not any type of Eldar. Not my cup o tea,.

Vindicare is certainly the most effective, in terms of looks though I think the Eversor assassin is the epitome of badss. The one assassin I actually own is a Callidus assassin from back when they used to go with Space Marines.
edit: all assassins are pretty badass.

I'm the same, I love any army minus the nid's. They're just too alien for me

Started with Tau after coming from DoW: Dark Crusade because of they were the king of shooting in their heyday.

Now I'm keeping myself busy with and Elysian AirCav until the Tau get updated. Gotta love fast, hard hitting shooting, whether imperial or xenos.

I would recommend taking a look at Dark Eldar, fast hard-hitting shooting is kind of our thing

True, but I'd like a little bit more durability in terms of infantry and vehicles.

Haha, if theirs one thing we don't have, it's toughness or durability

Codex Armageddon was the first 40k book I ever owned before even getting any models, I absolutely had to play Black Templars after reading through it.

I was going towards Blood Angels and Space Wolves, but then I read more World Eater fluff and it had me. Gladiator Brezekers running into battle and killing everything and there rage driving them on, thats win win win for me

When I started playing earlier this year I was attracted to four armies - Grey Knights, Space Wolves, Imperial Guard, Orks. Grey Knights because I thought the models looked cool, but when I discovered they liked using a lot of psychic attacks I quickly closed the book. Imperial Guard looked cool as well, but another guy in the group played them and I wanted to be unique. Same reason for Orks; there were a few Ork armies in my gaming group. I went with Space Wolves for the fluff, conversion opportunities and because nobody in the group had a Wolves army.

Thats my main problem with Orkz as well, too many players. This is NOT to be taken as I would never do them, but I'm slightly hesitant to.

I choose my army first on looks then on fluff. Although Dawn of War: Dark Crusade got me into Warhammer to begin with.

Well I chose Imperial Guard (well the codex and a x20 kit) and only really read the codex for fluff fun. Then 3 years later (I get serious) and Purchase some Ork Boyz because 1) Orkz are hilarious 2) they have amazing conversion opprotunities 3) they are green and green is best 4) their fluf is killer to read 5) They are a great change of pace from my roguish sneaky style that I use in all other games...like DnD or Elder Scrolls or GURPS or Aftermath! or Thieves World or anything like that...

I chose necrons due to their look and their ability to teleport around the battlefield.

Picked Daemonhunters based on the picture on the front of the old codex of an Inquisitor on a pile of skulls with a thunder hammer

Similar story. I was introduced into this game by some friends in a local comic shop, which also did gaming, in the 90s. The shop is still in buisiness, and still does both fairly well. I was in the shop for second edition, but I never played it. At the time I was around 13 and thought it was way over my head. But I would watch the locals roll dice and pick up their space men when I came to get my books. Third hit and some of the locals griped about it, some cheered. I'd just laugh about it, buy my comics, and walk out.

One day perusing through the books and models, the cover art on the 3rd edition box set caught my eye. It's the one with all the Templars on the mound as if making a final stand. I fell in love with that art right there on the spot, been playing Templars ever since.

Everything else since then has been on strength of codex/rule of cool, but that was my one impulse buy of 40k.
