Wargames Con is back for its 4th year, bigger and better than ever!
We have grown so much that we’re the second largest Wargaming convention behind Adepticon. With that said we have decided to expand and move into a whole new venue with three times the space! This has opened up new opportunities for us and our attendees!
Here is schedule for this year’s Wargames Con 2012
Friday June 22
• Warhammer 40K and Fantasy Pairs Events
• 40K Mirror Match Tournament
• Flames of War 1750pt Early War (1-day)
• Warmachine/Hordes 15pt Blitzmachine tournament / 10 Rounds
Saturday and Sunday June 23-24
• Warhammer 40K 7-game GT
• Warhammer Fantasy 5-game GT
• Flames of War 1750pt Early War Nationals (2-day)
• Warmachine/Hordes 50pt Hardcore tournament / 5 Rounds - Saturday
• Warmachine/Hordes 50pt Steamroller tournament / 5 Rounds –Sunday
• Warhammer 40K Narrative Anti-Tournament
So what’s new?
*15 Extra Minutes for 40K players!
-All the Warhamemr 40000 GT games are now 2:15 rounds.
* Massive Vendor Hall
– 10,000 SQ Feet of vendor Space. That's right, with our new hotel, you can expect to see a full fledged vendor hall jam packed with all your favorite companies, and wargames suppliers.
• Warmachine and Flames of War
- Back in their three day all weekend event tracks. Flames of War will include the Early War Nationals Invitational, while Warmachine now includes after-hours "Up-All-Night" madness for the truly hardcore. So all you fans come on down and
spend the entire weekend with us!
• Our Warhammer Fantasy Grand Tournament returns with 2500 points with 2.5 hour rounds.
• Narrative Games! Bigger and Better!
o We are doing the Eye of Terror using the Forces of Disorder under command of a mighty Chaos Warmaster attempting to smash asunder the Imperium's Cadian Gate.
o Second theme is the Battle of Kallidus, and that means Greenskins everywhere forming a massive Waaagh that threatens to overrun the Space Marine and Imperial Guard defenders.
Its gonna be an Apocalyptic blast - oh and don't forget about all the flyer, superheavy, and Titan goodness!
• The 40K Mirror Match
This concept was so good, it had to return for its second year – if we all played the same list, who would win? This year we’ve created a new Chaos Space Marine list (unveiled soon) that gives players a chance to find out who is the best with it on Friday. Missions
will be very simple, and the winner will be strictly determined by winning games. This event is limited to 32 players, with everyone playing the first 4 games and the finals being for all the marbles.
Head on to the WarGamesCon page, and get registered.
********We are aiming to make the Warhammer 40000 GT the largest single Tournament EVER, so get your tickets fast. *********
The first 300 registrants are guaranteed a collectible badge.

As a german player I'd like to inquire:
How do these entry fees add up?
60$ sounds like alot.
Over here the biggest tournaments charge 25€ for 2 days
So how come over in the US tournaments cost roughly double?

Archont,
It mainly comes down to cost and the venue you are at. There is also a big difference in a culture gap around Convention/Hotel centers in Europe compared to the US. In Europe most of your hotels don't have a convention center or it’s separated out. Also from my understanding talking to some of the German players when I was in Germany last year your venues are at ad hoc locations that have the space. Such as a Hockey Ring or specific club floor areas which you are able to handle a certain limit. In the U.S. events the size of ours, Adepticon and Nova you can't do that and have to go to dedicated spaces just for the sheer volume of people that going to the event.
That being said we are half of some other events in the U.S. mainly due to how cheap Texas is.

$60 is cheap for a event in the US.
Hell i can pay $25 to play in local store.
Also remember your money (dollar or Dem) goes a lot further over here.

The prices for US events are:
Adepticon is $40+$30.00=$70
Nova Open is $35+$65=$100.00
Bay Area Open is $57
Wargames Con is $20+$60=$80
So Wargames Con is around the same price as the other major tournament in the US .

True indeed, or they are quasi free spaces provided by non-profit organisations (Vereine) or by the gouvernment for this exact purpose: So that people have a meetingplace.
Makes sense, though, you're not done with the 60$, right? You also need the entrybadge for 20, so you get up to 80$. Pretty high.
Still, best of luck to you guys
If you will participate in next years ESC I would very much like to challenge you for round 1.

I am kind of surprised at the list.
The reason why is even though it is a mirror match I like what JWolf did last year and have lists and options where you could customize it to your own taste. For example a Librarian where you could pick your own powers, and Sicarious (sp) who gave you a USR to a troop unit.
Outside of the HQ choice (and to me it seems like a no-brainer to go with the DP with Lash) I would have expected to see some oblits in there to give each general some options in-game, but I guess in combination with Lash it might be too powerful.
Also it has one style of play which is to get close on your opponent and shoot plasma/melta.
Since all of the ranged firepower is concentrated in the Predator and one Lascannon. It would appear that whom ever goes first is at a huge advantage.

Allan I made the last year list also. Still keeping things interesting and having options for people to pick from. Space Marines had that option and we wanted to pick something different then Space Marines. I would think Lash would not be affective in this type of list actually because you don't have plates or items that you need to hit hard.

The problem with Chaos is that they have no defense against psychic powers, so that means that they will be at the mercy of Lash.
When you have 2 equally matched armies, getting the charge is huge (not only for the +1 attack, but then you have khonre berserkers with furious charge) so you are at an advantage if you can drag a unit closer into assault range while your opponent is still far enough away that you will not get counter charged. Also being able to move units into range or out of cover with your short range shooting and not be in a position to be shot back is nice as well. .
Also being able to lash units away (especially when they have such short ranged weapons) is going to be a giant factor in who wins, as well as the ability to drag units off of objectives.

What Allan said. Other than the other army's HQ and the GD, most of the things in there cannot stand up to a charge from the DP itself, the Greater Daemon, or even just units, and ranged firepower is quite limited in terms of being able to take advantage of the target presented by a non-hide-able DP.
Also, other than the typical chosen outflank / hope they arrive before GD move, it doesn't really have much Chaos flavor ... feels pretty vanilla, but without Allan's mentioned flexibility of actual 'Nilla rines.
That said, I'm a fan of the mirror match format in general, and of using a list other than marines. So good on the process as a whole ... just joining in a little nitpicking.

I agree with Allan about the lash. I think the game will turn into a war of the lashes as players push/pull each other into and out of charge range and off objectives. I don't think that’s necessarily a bad thing because the person that knows how to mitigate lash best will have an advantage (and isn’t that good generalship?). But lash will be pivotal, and anyone not taking the lash prince as their HQ is silly. I really doubt anyone would take any other HQ, especially with so many un-mounted units, lots of targets to move around every turn. Automatically Appended Next Post: I vote for throwing spawn in the list. It's the only chance they have to ever see the tabletop :0P

I would like to say that I like the Mirror Match format.
That being said, what made the MM fun is how you could play the same armies, and yet customize it to fit your own play style. Last year (as I said) you could choose your own psychic powers for your librarian, Sicarious could give you a USR, and you also had the option to combat squad.
As a CSM player I was excited when CSM were going to be the MM army. The problem is that the CSM codex is not only older, but the Chaos codex (along with Dark Angels) was released in the period where GW wanted to remove all options. After looking over the codex, It just does not lend itself to the MM format.
It seems like the 5th edition codexs have a bit more customization that would better suit the MM format than the chaos codex IMO.

I agree with the posters who say the list is blah. Lash does appear superior because there is so little ranged shooting to take it out. The DP's will run rampant.
To keep the chaos theme and include Blackmoors customization, why not make 4 cultish lists.
Chaos Lord, daemon weapon, (you choose icon, whatever you choose here must be the only icon you can choose anywhere else)
5 terminators, 2 combo-melta, 2 combo-plasma, heavy flamer, icon your lord took
Dreadnought, 2x CCW, heavy flamer, extra armor
10 marines, lascannon, plasmagun, icon your lord took
9 cult marines of the icon your mark took, rhino, champ, fist or pw+meltabomb, 2 special weapons of your choice
10 marines, 2 special weapons of your choice, pw+mb, rhino, icon your lord took
10 lesser daemons
8 raptors, icon your lord took, 2 special weapons of your choice, champ with lightning claws
Defiler
Predator, side heavy bolters
I have no idea what these points are. Each list will not be the same points, but I think they will be the same power level. Tzeentch doesn't get the special weapons in the cult squad, but they are more expensive anyway and get a sorcerer who can choose a power.
This seems more like chaos to me and has customization.

Post by: Darkwynn
We went along the path of Sacred numbers and that the Chaos book isn't what it use to be. its suppose to be a Warband army that has come together under one lord.
That being said yes, the Chaos book doesn't have the customization that the latest 5th edition books have. That is why we wanted people to select the Lord or HQ choice that was around the same points. As for people selecting Lash I think its a red herring if you really think about it. the DP can be brought down pretty easy and it will come down to generalship. People will have to block units with Rhinos, leverage cover and engage when needed. The Lord could help with that and no one has psyker Defense but there are still ways to block that power. That is what Mirror match is all about using the tools at your disposal to win.
Personally If I was playing I would go with either Kharn or a Nurgle lord and would never go first in any of the match ups. That is me though
Remember all the boards are going to be the same and I would suggest you play the army out a couple of times and see how it works. There are a lot of counters built into the list that a lot of people won't see till they play it.

Post by: MVBrandt
Nick, Allan and I are both the types of players who will routinely use every trick in the book when playing, and leverage the most out of our lists. It's not so much a matter of evaluating whether you can tackle certain things with the list, but how and why you'd do it. Frankly, I much prefer an opponent working with very little ranged fire to try and tackle a DP and engaging in all sorts of self-harming move shenanigans to make lash moves illegal or pointless, etc., etc., than have him simply keep in mind a nasty-kinda combat lord I have.
It's 6 and half dozen, but the argument that there's depth and a lot you can do with it is a bit of a pointless one to the commenters; we're fairly familiar with that sort of stuff.

I personally feel fine about the hq choices and the list in general. On the topic of the DPs thoug I would rather the choice be a DP with wings MoT or MoK. You see them fielded less and it gets rid of lash which people seem to be against.

Post by: Bat Manuel
Never mind the lash prince. I don't see why there are any options at all. If I chose a different HQ than my opponent... it isn't a mirror match. It seems that there is still some element of 'who can build the best list' as there are four different lists to choose from when that shouldn't be a factor at all. Why not just set the list in stone (whatever it may be) and call it a day?

The Cap Ctiy Carnage site is also expired. Anyone have the current web site for it, or the details for the 40K GT?

I know the packet says that there will be primary and secondary mission objectives, is that all the info we'll be getting?
Knowing deployments/objectives, random/fixed turn lengths, etc. is a big deal for those of us who still have to paint whatever army we decide to bring!

We will be posting Missions early this year. Hoping to have them up for feedback to everyone on Jan 30th. Our group is meeting the next three weeks to build them out.

Yeah, well depending on what happens on Sunday I might have time. I signed up for the team and championship. If they don't change BT by then hoping to get in the final rounds with BT and make something happen. Hopefully the shirt I designed gets posted soon introducing Commissar Wolf. I just wish I could be playing it heh.

Well Hulk there is a lot of good compentation coming down for Wargames con so might be tough. You have Ben Mohile, Wyatt Traina, Marc Parker, Paul Murphy, Greg Sparks, Da boyz crew, some from Blade and bolter, a very strong group from Germany and of course Shaun Lowery who won last year.

@Goatboy – we’re running out of room on my bag, we’ll have to squeeze in a new one or two somehow.

The atmosphere of this event is amazing. The seven round format is the best anywhere in the country. It takes a tiny bit of pressure off of every single game and gives you a 'smooth' feeling the whole weekend.
This event is truly worth the expense and time. You get 7 to 10 games of 40k against the best in the country and even if you have a rough game in the mix you are not out of the running for best over all.
It is awesome to see how the field shakes out on day two with at least 40% of the filed still in the hunt for one of the top spots.

One of the main reasons WargamesCon is on my list this year is the quality of the field that generally shows up to attend. Much like Adepticon and the Nova it's top notch competition which is what's truly fun. Honestly I'll be lucky to pull a win at any of them but for me it's the chance to get out and play a bunch of games generally against awesome and fun people. Normally with a list I designed and painted within the last month or two @Jay It's the rudest state in the US!!!!!!!! I'm kidding. We lost my little brother to Texas....He's never gonna move away! Hey Guys, Ben Mohlie here. I'm definitely planning to go to Wargamescon again this year, it is honestly my favorite 40k event. The hotel is awesome, comfortable, with great general spaces to hang out and tell war stories after a hard day of wargaming. The competition is of the highest possible quality, with most of the major names in US 40k in attendance. I love the seven game format too, since it allows for their battle point system to pick a clear winner and yet still enables someone to lose a game and still be in contention. Last year the mirror match tournament was a lot of fun, so check that out too. Or if tournaments aren't your style, the narrative events looked like a blast. I could hear the cheering from across the hall last year. So whatever your style is I'm sure you'd have a good time at this event. And if all else fails you can come down to heckle Goatboy and Darkwynn!!

The longer time limit this year will help a lot too. I don't think I ever ran out of time last year myself, but being able to have a little more cushion is sure to improve everyone's experience.

Seriously though we're coming down in full force, circuit training and cross training has just begun and were taking lots of liquid vitamins (beer) to prepare... Can't wait for another awesome

Duke,
I don't know if drinking that Coors banquet beer will work. I mean from Honeybadgers response it is a marginally accepted party beer!
That won't fly in Texas

I have pictures of Rodney Dangerfield coming back in that speedo swimmer movie. I don't think I will be able to get rid of it ever now.

Mirror Match has a dozen or so tickets left; pairs has a lot of space still. Mirror Match is a pretty good rogues gallery event, and pairs lets you play with your Forgeworld toys. Choose your own adventure.

You are safe to wait a week. We aren't Adepticon, and a lot higher percentage of our players have longer travel distance, so we sell slower.

35 actually.
I took a mixed GKT list last year. Draigo, 5 Paladins, 20 Terminators, 3 Dreadnoughts. I ended up 28th in the RTT, which wasn't bad, given that it was my 2nd tournament. I think I could place much higher now, especially if I were to run actual Draigowing.

The tables were not open at all. They were pretty damn good.
They even go through the trouble of blocking out some windows on the lower floors of buildings to add to the LOS blocking.
At this tournament you get to play 40k the way it was meant to be played.

We have tons of terrain and was one of the biggest comments we got last year was how great the terrain was to cover the size of our touranment.
Here is some examples from others doing reviews of Wargames con. They will have some shots for you to get an idea of the tables.

Sorry all for running behind on these with the recent changes in the FAQ and reworking the mirror list it took us a little longer to play test and work on missions.
Here are some example missions that will be run at Wargames con.
Mission Alpha
Deployment: Pitched Battle
Primary Objective
• Seize Ground - 5 objectives. Players will roll off to place objectives before rolling to see who decided to go first/ deployment. Objectives follow standard Seize ground rules and must be 12 inches or more away from the Table edge and another objective.
Secondary Objective
• Marked for Death -Eliminate a Troop Choices not including a dedicated transport. Opponent gets to pick decided before game starts.
Tertiary Objective
• All in Area Control: Table quarters to the right of the opponent are areas of control and must be maintained. Which ever play has the most victory points in that table quarter of any unit controls the table quarter. If the victory point difference total is 150 points or less its considered a draw.
Mission Beta
Deployment: Dawn of War
Primary Objective
• Kill Points – whoever has the most Kill points at the end of the game wins. If both players have the same amount of Kill points the players tie.
Secondary Objective
• Central Command – Control the middle, any unit within 12” of the center will count as controlling the middle. Whoever has more units in the middle will control the middle. Count units controlling the middle the same way as you would kill points. Ex. A 10 man tactical squad with a Chaplin would count as two units controlling the center
Tertiary Objective
• Over the line: If you have a unit within 6” of the opponent’s long table edge. Any unit counts as long as you have a unit within 6” inches. This is winnable by both.
Mission Gamma
Deployment: Pitched Battle
Primary Objective
• Capture & Control – Whoever scores the most objectives wins this mission. Place objectives the same way from the book. You deploy your objective when you deploy your army.
Secondary Objective
• Victory points – If the player scores 150 or more victory points they will win this objective. If the difference between both players is 150-0, players will tie.
Tertiary Objective
• Behind the lines: Have units in the enemy deployment zone. Both players can achieve this mission.
Mission Delta
Deployment: Spearhead
Primary Objective
• Seize ground 3 Objectives – There is one objective placed in the middle of the board. The other two objectives follow the same rules as Seized ground objectives and are placed by the player. They have to be 12 inches away from the table edge and 12 inches away from another objective including the middle objective.
Secondary Objective
• Kill points – Kill points out of the Main rule book. Whoever has more kill points at the end of the game achieves this objective.
Tertiary Objective
• Table Quarters: Players have to control table quarters, players control table quarters by having the most amount of victory points in that table quarter. There is no difference in Victory points. If a player has one more victory point over the player they control that table quarter.

Actual mission in unannounced order
That being said we are taking feedback to make the missions better. So they could change but something tells me it will only be slightly.

Generally speaking I don't like missions that use VPs in 5th ed. 5th ed (and beyond) codices aren't balanced VP wise so using VPs as a mission objective, even secondary or tertiary, can cause problems. I also find that I need to carefully count my opponents VPs in order to insure a true result and in some cases vice versa. I would say substitute KPs for VPs wherever possible and if it isn't possible perhaps rethink the objective. Just my .02, will these also be the missions for the Mirror Match?
49995
Post by: -666-
I'd prefer that similar objectives be the same throughout the missions rather the slight variance - in a tight game it could easily lead to some confusion. Also the wording for the tertiary in the Alpha mission is confusing.

I'm not a big fan of fixed five objectives, but I see that you've got fixed three later, so that balances out. Nice. I also appreciate that they're player-placed. Good show!
Marked for death needs to be more specific about when the units are designated. I strongly advise that it be after deployment. Player going first has to name his target first.
I don't think I quite understand the tertiary. Each of you is trying to gain control of the quadrant to his opponent's right? Is that correct? And you need more than 150pts in excess of your opponent's total in the quadrant to hold it? So if I have a 105pt unit in the quadrant to my right, you need to have 256vp worth of units in there to take it?

C&C: In the book you place objectives before either player deploys, and the guy with choice of DZ has to place his first. I strongly advise you keep it that way, rather than having them placed when you deploy your army.
VPs: I think you mean "Compare victory points scored; if one player has 151 or more in excess of his opponent's total, he wins. If the difference is 150 or less, it is a draw". Is that right?
BtL: Unit singular or units plural? Do they have to be completely in, or can it just be the majority of the unit? If the latter, and the unit is evenly divided, do you randomize?

List were due the 30th, but it is no big deal, all you have to due is bring 9 copies (in army builder) to the tournament. They should check your list for any validity checks when you register (If you already sent your list in, they will have 9 copies waiting for you during registration). I believe last year they had the badges laid out in the gaming hall for people to pick up after they have registered.

Games up here are events that involve a lot of joking, shooting the breeze, pausing for treats or eats, etc. They usually last 3 1/2 to 4 hours for 2k points. I think we can do it in 2 1/4, but it'll feel like sliding down a vasaline cliff wearing teflon boots.

I'm glad there's a narrative tournament for many reasons: 1) I get to field my Armored Company!! YAY!!! 2) I can stay away from you all crazies in the GT! Not that there's anything wrong with it, but some of us can't take the pressure of a major GT. Especially if we can't field our unreasonably huge invesment in IG tanks...

I used Necrons at AlamoGT last year (and should note I was the ONLY one there with that army and lost out on free beer to a Tau player). A few months back, David Light was telling me Jay Roy still gets teased one in a while for losing to me.
In retrospect, I should have thrown that game. I played Dash in the 2nd round and crazyredpraetorian in the 3rd and got tabled in 2 turns in each game.
I took Grey Knights to Wargamescon last year and I'll be using Grey Knights again this year.
I haven't finished "rebuilding" my Necrons as my prior army was invalidated by the new codex. I actually ended up selling it all.

Oh and Allan had 2 Warbosses from what I remember. Whatver the case, 150 Boyz are a nightmare for every Meta army. Even the Hyper Aggressive DCA I've been playing at 2k would have a hard.time and that's not including the Nob Bikers.

As far as I saw it only had 6 Wraiths.
He had (from my guess):
Anrykar in CCB
Overlord in CCB
Royal Courts
3 Immortal Squads in Scythes
Warriors in Ark
2 squads of Scarabs?
6 Wraiths
2 units of 3 Spiders

Sounds about right. The real problem with the current tournament scene, and thank god 6th is here in 6 days, is that the meta is so marine centric that a player can take something like 150 , which is good period, and prepare to dominate based upon everyone else prepping to fight marines.

We took this picture of the results Friday night:
http://i.imgur.com/BaW9t.jpg
However, team Next Level Painting's score was counted incorrectly in the second round (and they jumped from 32 battlepoints to 51).
Come to think of it, I wish I had played an easy 3rd round opponent (with 20ish points instead of 34). Would have meant we wouldn't have faced some Hades Drill whatever-the-hell bull ! I will say we still beat them 15-0 despite having no idea what their units did (and never being shown actual rules).
I think there were 27 tables, so 54 teams in total, although I could be mistaken.
OH and 2 things:
1) Dust Warfare looks really, really awesome. For the price point, it's looking really difficult to avoid giving the starter set a go.
2) Privateer Press hooked me as they were giving out a free started set for Warmachine / Hordes for anyone who did their free demo. As someone who hasn't played Warmachine or Hordes, I'm really stoked about getting into the system. From what I saw, it looks like something I'll have a blast playing.

Had we gone first, that game would have ended differently.
Considering I had like 10hours of sleep the three days before we did decently.
The top two tables opponents we would have smashed after I saw there list.

When I asked, "What do this do?" I was expecting you to fully explain it to me in good faith. Saying "It's like a Mawloc" was very misleading, whether intentional or not. To be fair, we would have spread out more if we knew what they did, but the game would have gone the same.
Had we gone first, that game would have ended differently.

In my opinion, you both deployed too aggressively. Your entire armies were on open ground in clear line of sight, despite knowing we had first turn.

I wouldn't make such a bold claim. There were far better players than either of our teams on the tables surrounding us.

What a weekend, I had a blast as always at WargamesCon. I got to play a ton of really challenging games against great opponents, I couldn't have thought of a better way to send out 5th edition. Congratulations to Alan for edging me out for best overall, He played flawlessly all weekend and still had 5 more points than me when the smoke cleared even though I managed to win our game 25-5. No one else could get a single point on him!? Really!? Comon guys theres only 180 orks on the table!!
The event was really well run as always, thank you to the tournament organizers and the judging staff.

Yeah don't worry I know. Anrakyr either walked around with tomb spyders or cruised in a nightscythe. On the weekend he claimed a manticore, a storm raven, and a raider with his tachyon arrow.
Oh and no I was not using anything like "wraithwing", I'm not a big fan of one dimensional armies. Instead I was rocking...NIGHTSCYTHES! Which honestly won me all my hardest games. Favorite night scythe moment was against Alan. For the mission we each had to kill the other guys HQ. I screwed up and left my lord in charge range of the nob bikers, and they drove over and killed him. He falls over breifly, makes his reanimation roll, moves 6, hops in a nightscythe, and boom I'm garunteed to draw that objective because even if the scythe goes down he will just walk on and hide in a corner! (i was going second)
You can check out blood of kittens for my exact list.

I watched half of your last game. It is good that you have such a good command of the rules, because your opponent didn't. I hope that it was because he was playing a new army for the American ETC team, but he had a very poor grasp of the rules (I am bad with rules myself, but that was awful).

Post by: Clauss
I have to reiterate the same as Blackmoor here, your rules knowledge was very solid. But sadly Joe's was very very poor and was making it painful to watch. Along with the over measuring several times early with ravens..razors..DC..Just a rough game to watch, I am personally extremely surprised he made it to table 1 for round 7. ( Not meant to be bashing Joe or his army)
Just simply from viewing that game, I cannot imagine how he ended there. Otherwise, well played game Ben, I also find your necron list quite effective and out of the ordinary, well done.
One query though, how did your game with Alan go? I am sure the NS's ability to pump out wounds truly helped alot along with an ample supply of scarabs were the most important things in your list. Any change your barge was able to snipe out the nobz? and did the lightning fields ever come into effect?

You can actually watch all the table 1 games on the heroic 28's ustream page. My game with Alan was round 6:
Game Six objectives were:
Pick an opponent HQ and kill it while keeping yours alive
5 Objectives
Capture and Control: bottom left and top right objective (from camera view) counted as the capture and control objective.
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-heroic-28s-40k-live
It was an extremely close, awesome game. And yes, lightning fields were AWESOME!! Won me a key combat, and were so scary alan never wanted to charge that unit with his nobs. The tesla destructors were, as always, amazing weapons, and night scythes were just excellent units. In fact, the reserve rule allowed me to tie the kill the HQ mission.

Wargamescon was a blast, really fun. Had a great time, saw friends and played nothing but fun, very challenging games. The mighty, mighty footdar finished up 5th strong, going 4-0-1. I dropped in the finals when I drew the same ig player two games in a row. I just didn't want to play ig 4 times in the same event. My opponent was a great guy, I just didn't want to do it! Haha, jwolf was nice enough to step in and play ringer for me and I was able to watch the last games. Awesome to see all the "bad" armies doing so well! Well done to Alan and Ben, and just goes to show: players win tournaments, not lists.

Sorry Petra but it’s the top 16 tables. They are paired pure swiss and by that element they would be forced to play each other mainly due to how they scored. The difference was quite far between others and if we did that would start changing and skewing systems if you take Swiss to its pure element. We will try to switch them around if the point difference isn't far but sometimes you can't
Now for the lower bracket which is run like a traditional GT we switched people all the time in the lower bracket. The top though is excluded because at its essence it’s a competitive event.

I wasn't mad about it at all, I wasn't in the hunt to win as my army doesn't smash people. I was undefeated, but all my victories were small. Alan and his Orks got max points in almost every battle! I appreciated that on the second day they split the lower end of the field off for a 2nd day RT style event. Getting a clean slate and starting over was nice, by doing that though the top bracket simply must accept that some wonky things like this may occur. No one had a problem with it so I don't see why you're making a big deal out of it. Ultimately other competitive events, to the best of my knowledge, don't give the lower end of the field a chance to start over with a clean slate day 2 and the chance for more prizes. So you're trying to compare apples to oranges which is hardly fair.

While the latter half of that quote is not entirely true, it's a fair statement in general to say once an event's format is set, you need to follow it to ensure fairness and everything else. The competitors weren't upset over it (Reece had a headache / etc., and didn't want to play guard again ... nothing about his opponent), and the format / points called for it. One of those situations here where the nonparticipants care more than those who understood the format and were fine w/ it being followed.

Oh, I completely cop to me being more concerned about it than the actual participants. It is simply a matter of me not wanting to play the same person twice.

Sounds like a legitimate question to me. At any GT I go to, I have the expectation that I will not play the same opponent twice. I don't think he was blasting you for doing it, but that it intrigued him.
It also is a possibility for next year, will there be any changes to prevent this from happening?

Post by: blood angel
Doubt it, nor is there a reason for it to change.
In a 7 round tournament it only happens in the later rounds when the overall winner is being determined.
Basically if you are there just trying to have a good time and are not on the top tables it will never happen to you if it is a real 'concern.'

Maybe some more clarification would help people understand.
Day 1 there is 4 rounds that everyone in the event plays. There should never be someone who plays the same person in this round or from there same area as we sort by zipcode along with other variables.
Day 2 we split the tournament into two events. The first we take depending on the number of people in the event a % that move on and keep their same scores. They are then reseeded based on their battlepoints off day 1..
The other group below the cutoff get a whole new start and their battle scores reset to zero( They keep sportsmanship and painting).
The top bracket is sorted and plays against people who made the top. This could be someone who they played from yesterday because of seeding for day 2.
If Day 2 they have close scores and they want to switch we will try to switch them with scores that are close unless Scores are diverged enough by 30+points.
The bottom bracket is a classic old school Rogue GT and we can switch and move people around all the time which we did quite frequently as that is more of a relax tournament and for fun.
so short if your going to be there competitive and you expect to be in the top 16 it could happen but we can move things around if needed ( That is why you see resposnes from Blood angel and Next level painting who were both in the top 16). If your there for fun that is something you don't need to worry about playing someone you have already played.

99%+ of events make a point of not pairing the same people twice. It was a legitimate question, and deserved the real answer it got later. The format makes sense, but it's unusual enough that explaining it shouldn't be a big deal. Thanks for doing the right thing.

Derkwann... Cute,

To be fair, I'm used to being called all sorts of things due to my unusual real name, so it isn't so bad. lol
Any ideas from the organizers as to why there was such a big upset in codexes at the top levels? Missions or top level players just said 'F GKs!'?

I wasn't there or anything but from reading batreps, there were several "kill HQ" or "kill marked unit" objectives. This could have given necrons an advantage as their HQ's can keep coming back. Ben mentioned jumping anrakyr into a night scythe to save him since the special rule puts him back into reserves.

My dad and I are clearly greater than the sum of our parts.
We were 3rd overall in doubles. I placed 17th in the RT and he placed 100th. I'll tease him about this until next year.

The reasons why are:
All of the Grey Knight hate has turned off some of the Grey Knight players.
Necrons have quietly become the best codex.
Everyone has figured out how to beat Grey Knights by now.

Cool, I figured that was some of it, but it is nice to see some confirmation. Necrons are pretty nasty.

mostly it was due to people not wanting to play Grey knights and it was the end of 5th edition. Lots of 5th edition apathy and people who came wanted to have fun. Saw tons of Dark Eldar players and even nids who used to play Grey knights.

Well, whatever the reason, it is nice to see.

Any chance of posting the team tournament results, or are they already out somewhere I haven't found yet? We didn't stick around that night for the printed wall posting since the year before they were on-line that night.
Thanks!
