I got Orcs Must Die, Brink, and Fallout 3. Also picking up the full Company of Heroes set, because my disks are scratched up (I blame my cats and nephews... Steam is so wonderful to avoid things like this), but that 's not exactly a NEW game for me.
I had been been looking at E.Y.E. but ended up opting for Risen.
My list so far is:
Blood Bowl, Orcs Must Die, Company of Heroes (lost my copy of the original game), the Commandos Collection, DEFCON, Evil Genius, Fate of the World, From Dust, Frozen Synapse (this one is awesome), Magicka, Monday Night Combat, the Mount & Blade series, PAYDAY, the Stalker series, HAWX, Wing of Prey, Universe Sandbox, and, just because I've always wondered what these games entail, Train Simulator 2012 (hooray impulse purchases).
It's not bad I enjoyed it very much. But it just takes place in japan and theres barely any unit diversity, but it still is mega fun. But I personally liked Medieval and Empire a lot better. The AI is good but there are still some bugs with texturing. Like for instance I'm running two 570's with SLI, 16 gb ram, and a quad I7 3.44 processor and the graphic suck on high everything. It's very strange.
As far as battle gameplay it runs a lot smoother than Empire but the AI can still be stupid sometimes. It is a lot smarter than Empire though.
More than I should have bought, I think...and still 6 days to go in the sales.
Bookworm Adventures (Deluxe and Volume 2), Bunch of Heroes, Chantelise, Fate of the World, From Dust, Hard Reset, Nuclear Dawn, Psychonauts, S.T.A.L.K.E.R (Shadow of Chernobyl, Call of Pripyat, and Clear Sky), Singularity, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, and Tropico 4.
I've been playing Tropico 4 the most of all of them. I think I've racked up 20 hours in about 3 days (starting whenever it went on sale).

Dawn of war 2????
That's a funny way of saying Dawn of war: Dark Crusade

Because, everyone was accused of heresy, no one was innocent.
saw this and had a poke about wile letting youtube run along in the background. Didn't see anything I liked... at all. And then youtube kicked on a painfully familiar tune. I remember failing at the game when I was pretty darn wee (couldnt understand what i was doing and I could only stumble through the first two missions). Syndicate. So now I'm doing some research to see what the heck happened to that
Research conducted. The FPS scares the living bajeezus out of me.

EYE looks like it is copying off of Warhammer 40,000 to some extent.
The only real problem I see is that the population cap is too low-- or more accurately, there isn't an option for a higher population cap in skirmish/multiplayer mode.
A double pop cap game mode would go a long way to making many people more satisfied with the game.
I've been thinking of grabbing Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity for the game + the currently released expansions; anyone played it before? Worth buying?
I personally like Sins. You start with a planet and then expand while building up a fleet and defenses. Each planet can support a small amount of orbital platforms which can be research stations, factories, or defense platforms.
With the expansions they added more trade and diplomacy as well as space stations. Each capital ship and space station can be upgraded, capital ships level up to gain powers and space stations can have factories, armor, weapons, or other things added to them. I have fun with it and have had games lasting 9+ hours with computers as the other players. Its a good thing you can save and then walk away a bit before picking up the match at another time.
One thing that never made sense to me was that DoW2 didn't have a straight up free for all. As in, I want to get 7 or so of my buddies and just have a massive battle without having to worry about capturing anything. Our group has always enjoyed the eradicate your enemy approach as opposed to a rather boring hold the objective.
This may have changed, but in the time since it's come out I've glanced every now in then in hopes that it finally added what should be a standard game mode, but I've yet to see it. Even a mod of it.

I know bashing DoOW2 is more important than paying attention, but it has had annihilation mode since its launch
As in, since the launch of DoW2 vanilla. Which was close to three years ago.
Speaking of Dawn of War, they're all on sale on Steam today. Also, if you play against a human player for 30 minutes on some snow levels in Retribution you get one of those achievements that can give you coupons or coal. Each coal gives you a chance to win a drawing on Jan.2.
Some of the coupons are alright, I got a 25% off of all Bethesda games and 33% off of all Valve games. You can also trade coupons to other people so share the love, if someone really wants a new THQ game and you have a coupon you aren't going to use trade it for something you may want.
Stronghold 3 is also on sale as well as mother fething Majesty.

Mel, what are you talking about. I've played the game since launch, and just to make sure I just checked it again. There is NO option for free for all annihilation in that game, and there never has been. You have team annihilation, and you have free for all that requires you to capture points, but there has never been nor currently is a mode that lets you and 7 people just go at each other without some wonky objective or limitation.
If I am wrong I would very much like for you to prove this to me, because the reason that game isn't popular in my circle is because multiplayer currently sucks for people who just want a massive battle with everyone.

I so want Stronghold 3 :/ but I dunno if I should shell out thirty bucks for it..
I was looking at Stronghold 3. Looks neat but 47/100 score? Ouch
(Yes, I know video game ratings are subjective)
Anyways, besides big games I try to avoid buying any more steam games
After watching my brother rack in dozens of indie games for cheap from those humble bundles, I'm afraid I'm just wasting money on games I may not like (for example I bought Revenge of the titans on sale for $5. Not a bad game, then it got on the Humble Bundle and my bro got it for less than $4 along with the rest of the bundle)
Melissia wrote:The Stronghold series has always been good, but it doesn't suit some peoples' styles so it gets bashed.
Every time I think of stronghold I think of the video some guy showed when he reviewed it. Talked about how he had some bowmen in watch towers to protect against wolves and the like. Well a pack of said wolves show up, and proceed to run animation straight up the ladder to the top of the watch tower and slaughter the archers. I imagine it was a bug that was fixed. Still, I would be rather frustrated to see it happen.
I've loved the stronghold series (although never could get LAN on the second one to work, ever), so I'm sure I'll give this one a try soon enough.
Anyone nab any free games through achievements yet? After doing 25 of them (90% of which were games I already owned, I don't buy games just to do the achievement ) I've picked up a free copy of X3: Gold and Global Ops: Commando Libya among a bunch of other coupons.
There is a DLC already out called "realm of the diggle gods", it adds 5 more levels to the dungeon and is seemingly themed around some kind of diggle-cthulu.
The DLC also adds the vegan, pirate, hunter, were-diggle and emomancy skills.
Avatar 720 wrote:Well, I got Sins... it crashes whenever I try and play a game.
That's a shame, have you tried all of the basic fixes like running as admin or closing out all other windows while its running? I know that TF2 will crash if I'm running Steam at the same time thanks to the HL2 engine running the game.
My friend got a copy of Mount and Blade so he's pretty happy with himself. I got a 50% off of Operation Flashpoint: Red River and a 50% off of GTA4 Complete, but traded the 50% off of GTA4 for Red Faction and got a piece of coal for the trading achievement. I would also like to note that some of the achievements are from F2P games so its worth downloading them just to do the achievement before getting rid of the game.
Melissia wrote:I've sadly never played Tribes. What's Section 8 like?
You should definitely give Tribes: Ascend a shot (Its basically a modern clone of Tribes 2, my favorite game of all time.)
As for Section 8:
Really good, in my opinion, but I like the whole vertical shooter concept. My main complaint is that its fairly slow, compared to Tribes (which compares with the UT series in terms of speed), and the weapons seem a bit weak.
What's everyone's personal opinion on Empire: Total War?
I got Civ V and I've been enjoying the hell out of it, I really like Steam and I wish the folks at Minecraft would work something out with them, maybe streamline the purchasing process.
Empire is good, though the sea combat is wonky. I would get Napoleon myself, as they're essentially the same game, but Napoleon has a number of improvements over Empire.
Also, if you (all) haven't played the Oddworld games, then you would be remiss in missing the Oddbox. All the Oddworld games for $3.74.
Also, also: my first Valve gift was the Codemasters Racing Pack, which has turned out to be pretty cool.
Melissia wrote:I kinda wish they'd focus more on building a stronghold to defend than th economic side...
Is stronghold anything like the old Castle games?
In Stronghold 1, the primary focus is on building a castle and defending it. You harvest wood, stone, iron, and food through various means, and build workshops to make weapons and armor. Then you build castle walls, towers, traps, set oil down, prepare siege engines and anti-siege engines, etc, and make a defensive position which an enemy army will rush towards to attack.
It's almost like a precursor to tower defense games actually come to think of it.
In the second stronghold game, they greatly expand on the economic side, adding things like having a section of the castle clean up crap piles to prevent disease, a system by which your lord throws parties for "honor" which can be used to advance in rank to gain more stuff or used to purchase certain units for your army, having criminals, enforcers, and punishment (including execution if you desire), and so on.
Then there's the spinoff games, like Crusader (set in the Crusades of course, otherwise like the first Stronghold), Legends (a weird game which has things like magical items, dragons, king arthur, vlad dracul, siegfried of xanten), and Stronghold Kingdoms (an MMORTS that I haven't played). Then finally there's stronghold 3, which again, I haven't played.
Is anyone else experiencing hellishly slow DL speeds over Steam? I bought the Empire and Napoleon: Total War bundle yesterday, and the one I allow to DL to improve speed does so at peak (1.5mb/s) for about five minutes, then falls to 800kb-1mb/s, and then further to 600kb/s, and then to 30-50kb/s and stays there until I pause it and resume it, at which point it takes five mins to restart and then rinse repeats the process.
I thought that too, but Sins downloaded at my usual rate of 1.5mb/s and that was during the sale too. I've also tested it at different times during the day and I get the exact same result mid-morning, afternoon, evening and night.
I was up until 4am this morning after buying the games at 4:10pm yesterday trying to figure out what the hell was throttling my speed, I doubt it's the sales rush that's doing it if it can only stay constant at 30-50kb/s for 12 hours from mid-afternoon to the early hours of the next morning, and from 2pm onwards after that (because i'm still trying to figure it out).
All my games download, on average, around 400 kb/s (versus my usual 250-300 kb/s). It's nice seeing Steam predict a full day of downloading to get a game finished, and it winds up taking like 6 hours.

Tried it, got to china, finally stopped out of boredom.
Also thought the intro where that girl dies was badly planned. It took me awhile to just accept getting slapped kills you. Yeah he had augmented strength, but her body reacted as if it was a normal back hand.
Melissia wrote:LA Noir on sale for a baker's dozen. Anyone played that yet?
I've heard a lot of mixed things about it...
For a baker's dozen its not a bad price, I would pay $30 for it after having played it. For a Rockstar game a lot of people probably expected guns and bewbs everywhere, however there is a stunning lack of running around and just blasting people away. For once you're actually confined by the law and in most cases you can't even shoot someone walking down the street, let alone pull out your pistol. That being said there are some fun gun fights, but it definitely focuses more on looking around for clues and trying to catch bad guys. The facial expressions are great in this game when it comes to the interviews and if you can get past some of the dead nude females during the homicide missions its a fun game. If you're interested in it, then its worth $13 or so bucks.
Melissia wrote:LA Noir on sale for a baker's dozen. Anyone played that yet?

I found it pretty fun. It gets a little samey after a while, but it's really neat that every case has branching paths and different ways to reach the end, depending on how you approach a suspect or witness, how well you do during interviews/interrogations, and how many clues you find during each investigation.
The driving is kind of bad, though. Not in the driving itself, but the fact that cars have really poor AI - sometimes they'll just get stuck switching lanes, and stop in the middle of the street. It really gets to be a pain after a while, though you can (for the most part) tell your partner to drive and quick-travel to where you need to go anyway.
Yeah, although the campaign doesn't really get harder with more people playing, it def gets more dangerous for the players themselves because of stray spells.
