EDIT... To any new readers, don't be discouraged by my terrible models at the start, I have got so much better.... Skip to page 5 for my current stuff

Back to the regular sceduled programming.

Hi dakka,

Ive been avidly following many of the inspiring P&M threads here on dakka, drawing well..... inspiration. I have always enjoyed reading a thread that started with someones purchase of a battleforce, a codex and some green stuff and watching their army grow as well as their abilities. So much so that I have decided to create my own. I have decided to do this for a number of reasons, including getting the feedback, critisism and advice from fellow dakkalites, improving my painting skills, and simply the motivation. I was given for cristmas (by my grandma) the death company kit. I then procceded to purchase the codex and battle force from amazon. I love the internet. Anyway upon some research i found this guy www.mousemuffins.com and needed to buy his chequered pauldrons, Turns out i ran out of money, so they will have to wait. Anyway enough rambling. As the title suggests this will be a lamenters army. I just love the whole background of this chapter. Although models will have to wait till they arrive, I do have two things to ask of you, the amazing members of dakka (flattery gets you everywhere )

Number one: Advice on magnetising jump packs, I have done some research on the internet but most of it was vauge or unhelpfull

Number two: I would like advice on this list, there are only a few things that MUST stay (ie: I already own/payed for them) and they are, the ten death company, the tac squad, and the rhino. I would like a storm raven but its not that much of a big deal if it goes.

Why, hello there!

its an honour to have you here gits....

I have decided to update this log at least once a day. And so, here is todays:

Its not much, just a captain i cobbled together using some legs, a torso and a jumppack i had laying around, the rest is the dc. Theres no right shoulder pad because im going to order some online, when I have the money.... Anyway he isnt glued yet so C&C would be appreciated. Ecpecialy you LDP as you seem to be the resident expert on captains, after all you only have 10 of them

Tommorow I will try to do the 5 dc marines

EDIT: just noticed the dirty great bit of srue on the handle of his chainsword.... gonna go fix that up right now.

Ehehehehe I guess I am a bit of an expert
Well with the wargear you chose I think you chose the parts very well. Both the chainsword and the BP look very unique, and the pose is nice and dynamic. I might recommed trying to bulk up his waist perhaps with a few grenades and a gun holster though? Make him look stockier and stand out in a crowd, and when painting, paint a certain peice a different colour, like the chainsword sword bit, instead of black make it red, or vice versa or whatever.
Hope this helps dude!
Looking forward to the game

Why thank you!

hmm, didnt think of that, will do that presently

when painting, paint a certain peice a different colour, like the chainsword sword bit, instead of black make it red, or vice versa or whatever.
actually i was going to do that particular peice chequered, thats why i chose a simple one.

@matt, and gits: Thank you, I hope not to dissapoint you

Cool, another Lamenter player. Welcome to the 21st founding chapter of Lamenting

Let me know if I can help in anyway.

As for magnetizing Jump packs and back packs, I did this on my current assault squads. The trick was to get the right sized magnets. I’m thinking 3/32" x 1/16" Disc Magnets is what I used. They are about the right diameter to the back pack hole (however you will need to drill them out a bit to sit flush). They are also strong enough not to be bumped off when moving. Remove the backpack bump and drill out as well.
Make sure you align you magnets the correct way as with all the other troops as well; this allow you to use any of the back packs/ Jump packs on any guys. This keeps it simple so you don’t have to find backs that go with only certain guys.

Feel free to check out my page. thou slow to update. ...http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/394207.page

Advice, comments and critique is always appreciated.

Hello everybody,

I was looking at the stuff i needed to buy for this army, not the models but the paints, flock etc and the price was rising rapidly (did i mention that im broke ;(). This coupled with an idea I had a while back of a tactical squad taking cover in a ruin, gave me the idea to do urban basing. I looked online and drew some inspiration and i made my own.

Remember this is my first try at this so please be HARSH! that way I am more likely to improve and make better bases. Im pretty pleased with it however.

Apoligies for bad photo, my camera decided it didnt like my cheap batteries. This is all I got before it died on me

enjoy, Ben

magnetising is really easy brother want some hints check my other blog on my friend doing it to his vehicles but on the blog I ve done it for weapons.
peace hope it helped. :p

Yes i was thinking of doing that, maybe on a different base in the squad, i dont want to crowd up the base too much.

i made my urban basing as follows (this is best for vehicles, heavy weapon teams, flyers or dreadnoughts):
i bought red termite sand (your local pet shop that sells lizards)

dilluted some chaos black with water and added that to the
sand (not all the sand) making it black (and your hands get dirty)

i cut of small strips of sprue for a side walk. glue that to half the base in a irregular pettern.

now i painted the sprue brown. i made some of the red sand wet and stuffed that in the holes between the sprue.

the black sand i added in a very thin layer on the rest of the base.

now you have a side walk with partial road

You can make bases and terrain from a lot of common items. Thin card stock such as mini boxes or cereal boxes are just an example, Styrofoam from packaging or cork from wine bottles or cork panels can be useful. Metal and plastic bottles have intresting curves and shapes. When cut into small peices can be used to look like twisted metal scraps on the ground. Small piece of road gravel can be used ect. Your only bound by your imagination .

As always use caution when cutting, sawing and generally tearing apart stuff like plastic and metal scraps. Sharp edges abound.
and .. be sure to coat foam related items if your spray painting out of a can as opposed to an Air bush. The propellant will dissolve your foam right in front of your eyes. Also avoid heating Styrofoam and some types of plastics as it will melt, releasing a toxic gas. Important safety tips ... thanks Egon!!

easy man.
Basing is quite easy cork matting and sand really.
A little plastic tuning to straws.
cat litter.
the actually sprue can be made into metal struts
If you can get to a plumbing place that sells pipe and stuff its a massive geek fest.
if your from uk theres the pound shop where you can buy cheap chains to wrap stuff in.
last but not least.
Slate
Bark
stones
pebbles
all free from mother nature only just remember to dry the bark out before use.
peace hope I helped a little and keep up the good work.

Like where you're going with the bases. If you have acces to them filters from water taps make nice grating and are pretty cheap.

Re-wrote the list. removed the pread, and the extra armour on the furiso and replaced them with a furiso librarian. The reasoning behind this is if I can pick up another aobr dread then I can make three dreads out of the one kit, all i would need then would be theese..http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/MK-IV-DREADNOUGHT-CLOSE-COMBAT-ARM-LEFT-ARM.html.

So if anyone has a spare aobr dread kicking around. I would gladly purchase it off you.

The new painting and modeling table, the captain with some more purity seals and more bulk, the nice new powerfist weilding death company marine, and as I thought I had better include something thats not grey plastic, a model plane that got me first place in a competition a while back. It was the only time I have ever used an airbrush.

Looking good. Death company mightn't work so well for the Lamnter's fluff as they suffer neither from the black rage nor the red thirst. Also, wouldn't desert bases have been cheapest?
1.Walk to beach with spade and bucket
2.Collect sand
3.Walk home
4.Glue sand to base, paint.
Only the glue and paint cost money, see?

Actually, lamenters have had a reduced number, but they still suffer from the black rage and red thirst (I Think) Also sand bases..... meh. way too cliche

. The Lamenters are a Successor Chapter of the Blood Angels created during the Cursed 21st Founding, and seem to have eliminated the gene-seed Flaws known as the Black Rage and the Red Thirst through unknown means, but this secret cure may have been lost along with the Chapter.

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Lamenters
Guess you could find an excuse. Sand bases may be cliche, but sand can also be used to make snow, tundra, wastelwnd and ash-plains bases. All the same, it looks very good, and I wasn't critisising your basing choice, merely pointing out that sand would be cheaper.

Also, at the time of the Badab War, the Lamenters most certainly suffered from both curses. Even if someone wants to claim they are fully cured now, just play a historical army. Hah. Also, it is rumoured that Chapter Master Malakim Phoros, who was pretty close to succumbing at the time of the Badab War, was not actually dead, but instead survived and now leads a small force of Lamenters who escaped. Most probably closely allied or absorbed by the Red Corsairs, but still some fun to be had with that idea.

Further, an option I have long considered, even since before the Badab books, is to have the chapter slightly splintered. Have a codex faction who have used the cure and a BA faction who cling to the old ways, and play both armies, but with different codex books.

Fluff all aside , the DC is a good option to consider when playing with a BA codex. You could use any chapter codex. I've seen SM armies proxiy alot. At tourneys you see alot of proxy SW armies.

As long as your opponent knows what your using and your models can be identified as such. it's all good.

The several Lamenter players I know have all gone with their own version of theme ( both in painting and lists) Have fun - do your own thing.

Good morning dakka!

As i mentioned before my Battleforce arrived, And I have made a single tactical marine. Wow, loads of progress I know! There is a reason however, I am going away tommorow for a week, with no internet! at all! So to keep myself sane I will be taking my battleforce, etc with me

Last night however, I was inspired. So i set to work, and using parts, some I wasn't even aware I had, I built 90% of Malakim Phoros the master of the lamenters! (Only 90% as i need a right arm.... I need a halberd from the gk kit. So im hoping that i can get one soonish.) This morning, I realised I couldnt stop there, so I cobbled together a counts as corbulo working on a Blood chalice now. Chapter master and sanguinary high preist- done-ish to go, head librarian and chaplain + motf

see you all in a week

Ben

Nice use of different elements. The are starting to look original.

Remember to clean up your mold lines and flash. they can bring down the quality of even a good paint job. It''ll be the first comment most will critque. also drilling out the gun barrels are simple ways to make improvements in basic models.

Keep going...

" Garvity is a harsh mistress" The tick!

Also . Git has a great tutorial on basing. You don't have to use the same scheme as him but the techniques should be transferable to what ever you want to do. The Base can enhance a model greatly. It provides an overall effect that completes the look.

Check it out.

Finish painting the tactical squad, finish the rhino, make the next 5 death company, make the 5 assault marines, buy devestators or finish Knightleys gms? So dakka! Its up to you to decide.

Alright guys! As promised updates!

First up, I'm sorry for not updating in aaagggeeess! But I'm back now! I was going to update last week but a chaos daemon prince named Appendicitus abducted me and took me to the planet of Hospital IV. Luckily I managed to fight him off and the only damage I sustained was a small scar on my abdomen.

Second, I would like to thank Solar_Lion once more for his care package of parts and models that he sent over. They will be used often and you will see them very soon in a couple of updates time.

Third, I would like to thank Knightley, both for his GMS marine and for the advice that he gave me. But we will get onto that later.

Fourth (and finally) I am going to promise that will update regularly. I promise that there will be a picture update at least once a week. (goodbye social life )

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that thats over!
I had a spare lascannon lying around and I thought that I might practise a few of the techniques that I learnt from Knightley (note the squiggles). This was my first attempt at edge highlighting. Here is the result; Im especially pleased with the metal parts. Infact so pleased I might paint up the other side, add some bits and turn it into a turret/objective

C&C please

Cheers Proto

Ps) sorry about the poor quality photos, they were taken under bad lighting with my phone... Better pics tommorow!

Nice update. I'm really liking the Chappy.

Small bit of C&C, the red on your DC (the white models) looks a bit flat, and thin in places, note sure if it's the photo's but. I'd give it a couple of thin coats with the base coat to bring it up a bit, then highlight with and orangey red. The new Wild Rider Red from GW is retty good I've found.

I think the Wild Rider Red is one of the new colours. (not 100% this, someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I think you could get a similar tone with a mix of Blood Red and Blazing Orange though. I'd start 1:1 and graduially add more Blazing Orange til you're happy with the tone though.

The new mini is looking really crisp. Great job.

All I can really say is better lighting, maybe try near a window or a flurecent (spelling?) light?

Does your camera have a macro setting? It's a setting used for close up photography, especially of small objects.

It should be represented on your camera as a little flower it should look a little something like this:

Thanks for the kind words n my P&M blog by the way. I'm pretty slow for updates, but should have my dev squad up by the end of the month.

My old camera, that I was using before, had macro, but my new phone (samsung galaxy S) doesn't have it. You just tap the screen where you want to focus, that seems to do the same thing. Maybe a white sheet of paper in the background should fix my photo problems.

Thanks guys!

Oh and BTW, if you have time you should check out Evildrcheese's blog, some very nice painting in there.

Like a blank piece of paper, slightly curving so the sharp edges don't throw it off.

I think the photo is an actual improvement. I agree you should find a suitable color background to use. Something that isn't replecting light. I like dark blue or black. Also indirect or filtered lighting helps. direct lighting caruse the yellow to " white out" the figure.

Start asking around to some of the more professional photo guys- the ones whose photography you like and ask them what they do. Dakka is great for that.

Thanks SL, and anyone else who gave advice, it really paid off, as you'll see in a sec.

archonalrox wrote:whens the Stormraven update going to be

Hahahah I wasn't going to tell them just yet Alex!

Anyway, I got a Stormraven.. But no paint on that 'till I get a whole lot done on some other models done and dusted!

---------------------------------------------------------------
Onto today's update!

Some of you will recognize the captain, I know SL will (it's one of the models from his supply drop a while back.... It's a really nice model and although I will probably never play with it. I wanted to pull out all the stops on this one. My original plan was not to show you till it was done, but I was so pleased with how it was turning out that I thought I would chuck some pics up and get some feedback so I could improve it even more.

Notes on the sword... I wanted to do something different, 'cause before that I was just copying someone else's power sword design, and it wasn't mine so to speak. I also wanted to push myself on this model, so I went with star clusters and planets and whatnot. What are your guys thoughts on this? Did it work? I value your guys opinion so please take the time to post it.

Cheers, Proto.

Don't know whether it's just my computer screen, but I can't really see the planets, sorry

But he looks great regardless!

That sword is great. Nice little idea, pitty it's hard to make out the details, but it looks like a nice bit of painting.

Good start . some tips.

Make sure your primer is completely covering the figure this will help you identify the tough spots and plan your " attack" on what to paint when. Sometimes a dark wash ( like over white primer) will highlight all the recess’s and help with definition.

Make sure you paint all your base colors completely. I see some sections of bare metal. Under the cloak and inside the cracks. Just like primer these are things you don’t want to go back and touch up later. If you are handling the figure while painting, hold only the base when possible otherwise tack the figure down on an old glue pot or dowel so you can work without touching the figure.

Lastly save the details for last. These things for me are what make the model unique. If I paint the details before the base or finishing up the general features I risk painting over or ruining the detail work.

Over all finish each step with diligence. Anytime you can avoid going back over to fix something or clean up an area is a time saver a well as help you to not become frustrated with a figure or project.

You are improving, take your time , work on steadying you hand and not rushing to get done. Your getting better with every model.

Out of interest what colour wash would you recomend? Or does it depend on what colour the model is going to be? For instance if you were painting a BA marine, would you use a red wash?

MY Opinion... I prefer a dark wash. The intent is to highlight the figure so you can identify all the nooks and cranies.

It's another thing to wash the figure after the base coat. All depends on what your base color is. Then there is detail washing - where you apply the wash carefully to the joints and seems allowing it to pool in more specific places. Your not liberally washing the figure down.

After that there i've seen different techniques of washing to " dirty " or weather a figure.

For My lamenters I use a white primer, wash with sepia. airbrush my base and highlighe color, detail wash with sepia. Do detail work as much as I can with my hands and eyes...then dry brush .

Yellow is open to alot of choices, I've seen red, brown and even purple washes.

For BA most people do red wash. However styles may very. See Eggroll's blog or Meph's for unique yet different styles. Both are excellent and give me something to aspire too some day!

Hey guys. An update for you! I know, intense! However it's not a happy update. As I'm sure you've noticed I haven't done to much on my lamenters latley. That's partly through a lack of motivation I guess. So, for now I've decided to put these guys on the backburner for now, and return to them (with renewed gusto) when the time is right.

Anyway, I have decided to make a miscelaneous project log found below.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/485059.page#4913893

Please stop buy and leave a comment.

Oh, and a sneak peek of what you'll find there, more pics in the other blog.

Thanks for your (hopefully continued) support.

Cheers, Proto.
