Im making this blog to keep me motivated on my Dark Angel Project. To kick start this thread I have got 2 tactical squads that i got off Ebay for a grand total of $3.25 AUD!! I also just got some Veterans, you should be seeing some of those.
Some feedback and followers would be nice!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok so after about an hour of painting (excluding drying time) I came up with this....
2 tactical squads $3.25, I'm going to Ebay right now! LOL.
As I have found simple green at bunnings I will be more inclined to buy Ebay stuff now because I know I can strip them. YAY!
Seeing your test mini it looks very nice. That green looks great. What are you planning on doing with the base?
SUBSCRIBED!
Yea it was a really good deal. Although the guy I got it from wasnt too happy at getting $3.25 and after it all his prices went up to a $25 Buy it now strting price. Its also going to allow me to buy some other stuff cos I spend the $120 GW wants.
Simple green at Bunnings!! Hmm better check this out. I was lucky with the Ebay models I got because they only had a thin coat of primer on them from one direction.
Let me clarify that Simple Green Can only be found at some Bunnings stores. Usually the major ones. I went to eight different Bunnings and only found two that stocked the all purpose cleaner that you need, but I bet you can request the staff to stock some. Also it is found in the cleaning products isle.
Thanks for the advice. I have 4 major bunnings around where I live (dont ask me why theres so many, probably because they dont want Mitre10 to take the spots).
Just put your Ravenwing on hoverboarda and call your chapter "the green goblins"
But seriously though, I kinda like the fact that they aren't too dark, so are easier to spot on a battlefield. Of course the base plays a big part in that.
I noticed that the models some how look like they are still WIP, because the skulls and aquilas on the weapons haven't been painted. Also if you can, you should add the DA symbol on the shoulderpads.

Or Masters, probably
it's a new hardware store that makes their shops BIGGER then ant major Bunnings I know!
Thanks for the comments. I did some more painting today and out popped another 2 tactical marines...
All completed marines.
I just found out that I'm going to my Grandparents house for 5 days, So no hobby time or updates. Atleast theres a reasonable Hobby shop I can get some stuff at
Or you could paprika them or Oregano them too but if FP wants you to Dill them then do it!
sorry, but yes, listen to the man, he's got some great models himself and it'd be a shame for yours to be painted so well and not have the barrels drilled out, I like the colour you used and when you do the chapter symbols they'll be a really nice subtle DA army, I can't wait to see how it looks with the robes painted in your style, it will be great i'm sure! in fact, i'm so sure of it, I've just subbed the thread so i don't miss anything!
WOOT WOOT!! More Dark Angels!! Great start on your army and a great deal . Stick with the original DA and not the successor chapter. As for feed back looks good now and if you have any questions on painting DA let me know Keep up the great work.
Thanks GreyDeathOne, I may be asking questions when I paint the Deathwing
Anyway, I went down to the Hobby shop... And picked up a pin drill. Thinking my dad would have a small enough peice, I didnt get any drill bits. Mistake. He didnt!
The shop also had 50% OFF EVERYTHING!!!! But Sadly My Mother Did Not Allow Me To Buy ANYTHING!!!!
I could have had the whole army bought!!!
*Calm Down* *Relax* *There will be another sale soon*
AND.... I finished another marine Barrel looks horrible
brilliant work dude! they look fantastic together! I can't believe the pin vice didn't come with any bits? that's a bit crap eh! :-) if i have a spare one before you get one then let me know and i'll send it to you? anything to keep a fellow hobbyist keen, inspired and working hard on a great looking force!
Thanks guys, I will probably be going down to Bunnings and looking at the drill pieces there. At the hobby shop there was a packet of 5 drill bits that were tiny, but it cost $25.
Next up will probably be half the veterans (well as half as you can get of 5)
I play pre-heresy Dark Angels, it is always nice to see new additions to the Unforgiven's ranks. Though the fallen were the good ones anyway haha so you truly do play the Unforgiven.
I felt like a break from painting the Tactical marines... So I painted a vet!!!
Here he is, I tried a new technique on the power sword. I think it came out well!!
I also was not comfortable painting the robes in a bone colour so they got red
Please note that the vents on the backpack have been painted
As usual Feedback wanted!!
Edit -
I also want to say, I'm looking at getting some Rhinos or unbuilt razorbacks. So if anyone out there has some that are in good condition and willing to trade or give away PLEASE pm me or write in this thread.
ALSO I will be away for 5 days so no Hobby time or updates
Flying Pooo wrote:The combat company sells 0.5mm and 0.85mm in the P3 Pinning Expansion sets. You can also get brass rods for pinning in the set. For $5, not bad
Instead of brass rod, I use small paperclips for pinning. Infinitely cheaper and you get a ton!

Ooh treading close to the 'Christmas Marines' motif, The paint combination looks good. I like that sword!
Never buy a Rhino. Buy Razorbacks or Predators, they all use the same frame as a Rhino and you can just not glue on the sponsons/top hatch if you really need a Rhino. Razorbacks even cost about the same (or did when I bought all my razorbacks) as rhinos so you're not paying more and you are getting lots of shiny extra heavy weapons too.
Mortalitas wrote:Thanks for the comments, I was saying rhinos because if the are already built I dont want the Heavy weapon on top.
Your welcome! I was saying don't buy Rhinos because the other models are the same kit with just the extra heavy weapon sprue, you'll save money in the long run and by magnetizing the heavy weapon, you'll have the option of two vehicles in one model.
Thats what I find funny about the Rhino and Razorback Kit, they are the same price but one comes with an extra sprue. Why don't they just make an all enclusive Box 'Razorback/Rhino' ?
Nice work, the sword is great, I love the effect you got with it! power weapons are always a tough one to look good without appearing dodgy or especially with a brush, very well done, robes are done well too, only thing i'd suggest is to maybe add another brighter highlight on the edges of the folds, don't be afraid, I think it'll really bring it together, i'm not sure what colours you're using but perhaps blood red then a tiny blood red/orange combo, and you can wash it with baal red wash to tie the colours together. whatever you do, keep painting, you've got a cracking pace up and it's producing some really neat models!
Mortalitas wrote:Thats what I find funny about the Rhino and Razorback Kit, they are the same price but one comes with an extra sprue. Why don't they just make an all enclusive Box 'Razorback/Rhino' ?
Then GW couldn't make money off selling you multiple kits. Most gamers go straight to superglue rather than the advanced technique of magnetizing or something similar.
I think some people just don't "see" that most vehicle kits are the same and that they could save money by purchasing one and then sprue for the other.
I like to keep the main kit together and the weapon attachment separate through either magnetizing or by creating slots, this way I can alternate between vehicles or create new conversions as I need them with plasticard.
Just got home from the most boring of trips to my grandparents, the hobby shop said 'we don't stock and Gameworkshop products' and that put me in a bad mood.
They look great. The weathering on the Dreadnought is really well done, and the Death Company are fantastic! Do try placing them in a comp for sure, they will do very well!
That tactical is really well painted, but it comes off looking a tiny bit bland. I would suggest adding another contrasting colour to the scheme to make your minis pop a little more. Maybe try gold like you used it on the sergeant. Otherwise he is very clean and crisp. I can't wait to see the whole squad!
Wait, what? Unless you have two Identical models, I think you put the Chaplain pic in where the Master pic should go. Anyway they are some nicely kit bashed minis and they look good but I think the Librarian needs a physic hood. The Chaplain also could have used a skull helmet but he looks great as is.
Nicely kit bashed dude! they look great and look how they should to represent each character (although a skull helm on the chappie would be nice) the master is quite imposing!
Mortalitas wrote:Bought a box of Dark Angel vets and since I needed some HQ models I kitbashe 'em...
Chaplain -
Librarian -
Master -
Feedback wanted!!
Good start on your HQ units! I used to play DA, and that veterans pack has so many great bits in it!
A bit of feedback: I like the stances that you have given your HQ units. Suitably dynamic and convincing.
Chaplain: Best pose award out of the three contestants. The crozius is great (though I would like to see the stone removed), as is the use of the skull backpack. He does seem to be lacking the iconic marking of his position, the skull mask. While not essential, you'll have to work a bit harder to make him look like a chaplain. I think the second angel on his backpack is a bit redundant with the crozius.
Librarian: Not a big fan atm. He is lacking some of the things that I look for in a librarian: the horned skull icons and the psykic hood. The helmet throws off the feel as well, but just because most librarians are bare headed. How are you with GS? A skull with horns on the shoulder pad and some robes on the side of his torso would go a long way, I think.
Chapter Master: I think a head swap with the Librarian would be great. That way your librarian get a hood (even if it isn't technically a psykic hood) and the wings for your master could go on the outside of a helmet instead of a hood (which looks odd to me). Is that a homebrew combi-melta? Could we get another view? The DA symbol on the top looks a little like an afterthought, it doesn't jive so well with the rest of the weapon. Again, a little GS robes would go a long way!
Keep up the great work! Hope that wasn't too much feedback! Rawson
Wow, I'm about dazzled about the amount of feedback there is in one post. But I'll do my best to answer some things.
Chaplain - I did have a skull mask to go on him (a trimmed down chaos one) but when I was building him I couldn't find it, I searched everywhere. The fact he is in black armour in a green and red tide makes him stand out alot and is easily distinguished as a Chaplain.
Librarian - As I said above hes still WIP and isn't complete yet. I'll swap his head for a hooded one. Thanks for the ideas on what to put on him!!
Master - I see your point with the wings and hood, he'll be getting a normal helmet with wings. The combi gun is just 2 bolters stuck together with one of the barrels switched with that of a melta gun. I think I'll change the symbole for a scope?
Thanks for the amount of feedback!! The painted master will be posted tommorow as well as the updated chaplain and 2 tactical marines.
It's nothing bad! I totally wouldn't have noticed it If I hadn't pointed it out to myself!
The reason I noticed it was because I was looking at his awesome helmet and I was thinking to myself "Where did he get that from".
I actually like the AOBR marines they are some great sculpts, the only downside it if you look really, really closely they are a tiny bit smaller than the average tactical marine.
I think some of the sculpts are good although how static they are is kinda strange. I love the terminators and dread from the box, you can really add your won touch to those!!
Heres some pic of the finished Company Master (or Captain of the company). Dumped the wings because they a pain in the and changed the combi-bolter for a plasma pistol because I wasn't happy with it.
And the updated Chaplain.
And the 2 main HQs for the army together.
Chaplain - Orks incoming sir.
Master - Be quite, I'm thinking
Chaplain - But sir.
Master - Be quite!
Chaplain - *sigh*
Master - I can feel something, a hunch I think. ORKS are coming!! To war!!
Librarian: I like him a lot better than the other one! Good work on the horned skull (will you also add horns to the shoulder pad?) as well as the psychic hand! I can spot a few mold lines (head, backpack, legs) so don't forget to take care of those!
Chapter Master: Good start, though a little monochrome (though I guess bichrome would be more accurate ). Maybe some metallics to pick out some detail, and a little love on the plasma pistol?
Ah, the AOBR kit bash! I've been working on some of those as well, turning them into Space Wolves, grey hunters or blood claws, its a fairly easy conversion and if you're not afraid to cut into a model then you have so many options to convert at a very affordable price point.
Rawson - I kinda cheated ( or used my brain ) and carefulley scraped the horned skull off the Furioso Dread arm plate. I see your point on the Master, I'll some more colours to him. The plasma pistol has a glowing effect on it but you can see it with the angle of the pictue.
Hmelrose - With some converting AoBR models can be really cool, my local GW made a Chaos army out of one.
Mortalitas wrote:Finished the Librarian, I'm really happy with him.
Added some more colours to the Commander.
I also managed to find a Landraider that I used for my Grey Knights, it will now be in service to the Dark Angels (Should I paint it Green or Bone?)
Aaand... I got a rhino in bad condition from a friend and I'm adding and repairing heavy armour, It may or may not go to my Blood Angels.
Feedback??
Librarian turned out really well! My last bit of CC: paint some horns on the skull on his shoulderplate and a little bit of text on the scroll. (A micron pen really helps with small text!)
I like the bit of metallics on the Chaptermaster: What will you put for text on the banner?
As for the Land raider: Green or Bone depends on Deathwing or not. You putting terminators or marines in there?
It is probably going to be used for the vets and termies. I was thinking bone with green accents in the recessed armour plates. For the text, I'm going to do that when the army's painted.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Spent some time to add up how many points I have and its around the 1250 mark, thats including the vets, master, chalpain, tac squads, rhino and land raider.
I like your overall scheme: the faded, dusty look. I think you need some bright color somewhere. Eye lenses maybe?
Marines are looking good! What's your count up to now?
I'm not convinced on the pose of the missle launcher marine. He looks like he got shanked in the back and is now falling over. A little more stable looking would suit his armament
I didn't know you had Orks! That's a really clever use of bits on that Big Mek.
It gives me some ideas for a Big Mek that I might have in my army, as I don't like the original KFF Big Mek.
I think a fancy conversion like this is much better!
The only things I would change would be the Big Choppa and the KFF.
I'd say the Big Choppa needs to be fashioned into more of a (monkey) wrench type shape.
Also the KFF is fine now but I think it would benifit from having some more shape and size which is usually the norm with Orky tech.
I think you could achieve this by adding some Tesla Coil type things sticking out everywhere.
Click this link!
Spoiler:
Like this awesome Mek I found while searching for KFF conversions. NOT MINE BUT I WISH IT WAS.
Actually come to think of it, those are the force shield generators from the Battle For Macragge set.
Maybe if you could Get Your Hands On those or something similar...
I think it's a good start. Maybe a few more bits: access panels, wires, etc. Are the green and purple wires going to be connected to his arms? The screws can definately work (especially after seeing that referece pic from Flying Pooo), but they still look like screws atm. Maybe some orbs to put on the top? You can probably just screw them on
The loyalist in me says, "Get back to work on the Dark Angels"
I find myself imagining what your version of Azrael would look like. He's really a brutal HQ choice and a total monster in combat. If you ever find the itch to make him, we'd all love to see it. Great stuff!
I've missed quite a bit! I'm liking the Rhino and those Vets are ace.
Don't worry this thread won't die you have some great stuff here people will find it.
I'd say keep posting here, but if you''re worried about lack of responses, you can open a showcase thread to show off your finished models.
I think you should keep posting. Seeing a lot of good things in this blog, while seeing some things you can improve on. Maybe you can try some OSL on that power mace of the latest vet?
Looks good, I'd say you have that scheme down pretty good now. How about trying out a more ambitious scheme for the mace. Some lightning or mirrored effect.
Mortalitas wrote:SHOULD I CONTINUE POSTING IN THIS THREAD? I'M NOT GETTING MANY COMMENTS AND I FEEL ITS KINDA DIED
I totally feel ya, I hate it when that happens. A few tips to generate come comments: your vets look great, so don't get me wrong, but posting each individual model isn't really neccessary as they are so similar. And since they're similar, posting the next vet in the squad probably won't generate a lot of additional comments. Squad pics work just fine. If there is something specific that you'd like input on, ask a question. Answering a question (ie do you think this shade of red works? is the pose natural?) is easier to do than generating a general opinion.
the colors on that dread are really nice! makes it look very realistic!
i personally think the plasma coil could do with some more color/glow
i love the base, you added some brick texture on it, but it looks really good! what is the recipe for that color?
Dude that dread is great! I love how dark and grimdark he looks! great paint style on him too, he also appears to be weathering a storm of fire while just casually perusing a battle! nicely done!
