ah i see you have tried that PVA and superglue aproach to the base as well... i think one day i have to try that out too...
sometimes you have to wait a bit with a blog to get the right attention... it is after all a matter of the right time...
looks like a patriotic nid scheme^^

I love your Nids, they look great, and the bases are just amazing, very cool indeed. How do you do that?
Its a complete about the primer on your long fangs, i saw your other post. I got some Army Painter Primer for Christmas, although luckily they have not melted the models. Although it is a little thicker than GW spray. So it’s something to get used to.
When you primed them was it straight over the plastic or was it over some already laid down paint, because in your pictures there were some other colours other than just the white primer?

The bases are very easy. For the gaunts, it is just elmers glue,or PVA glue, applied to a base. let it dry for 5 min, then applie drops of super glue/crazy glue to the pva glue, and vuala! A really cool chemical reaction! As for the warrior, same thing, but went over pieces of wine bottel cork.
Only one was primered with a Dragon red Army Painter Primer first, the rest were bare plastic. and the blue is the color of the plastic. Only one was a normal SW.

Actualy, these are OOP models. They are from a starter kit somewhere. They are not metal but a blue plastic. and the detail on the legs stink!

Your free hand looks great. If you keep it up through out the army I think you could develop some real skills. Don’t worry about the quick and frenzied dry brush technique, if you want to get an army on the table asap then that is the way to go. Just make sure to follow it up with some ink washes to blend it in better. I should also say, it wasn’t just the free hand that caught my eye. I love some of the poses that you have pulled off with your space wolves. Keep up the pace and inspiration, and you have a hell of a thread.

Ok, so I went with a more difficult free hand on the sholder pad and would like to know how it turned out. This is also the first model for SW that was not OOP that I painted. Tryed some highlighting on a lot of areas. I would like to know if the fur/skin on the bolter and shoulder pad is good or not. I hope you like!

What color are you using to highlight the blue? It doesn't seem right. That or the highlight is too thick.
I like the freehand on the knee and the red shoulderpad. The paw is nice, on both minis, but the "Russ" is a tad skewed.
LOVE the fur on the right pad though. Very nice.
40377

Thanks. The russ I think im going to make thicker. but for the highlight, im not using blue its bleached bone.

Post by: HAZZER
Really like the guy! the wolf pet on the SB is exerlant! The freehand is imporving! (Keep it up your really good at it)! But the Hilight is far too thick. I would sujest useing a 50-50 mix of SW grey to enchanted bule? There are many articles on the web which can show you how to paint SW I would sujest giving it a try! Keep it up your learning very quickly!

Space Wolf Grey is perfect for highlighting Shadow Grey. I use that combination on a lot of things that aren't even Space Wolves.
As far as "not that good at freehand"... doing it is how you get better, and I respect the fact you're not afraid to try it and drive forward. You'll get better for sure. I'm stuck in my old ways of painting and I don't venture out of my comfort zone very often. You're developing skills that I don't have. Keep it up and one day you'll realize that you are getting a lot better. Those are the days that really make all this worthwhile.

Wait, does the forgeworld model have a 20" wingspan, or is that your projected size for this model?
A quick search of the gallery reveals that Nard (the pink tyranid guy) has a harridan. You should ask him what the dimensions are, maybe even a comparison photo next to a trygon.

Ok, So I went snowboarding yesterday, am\nd was to tierd to post the pics. So with out futher delay, Just a few things to say. Yes I know chaos is spelled wrong, but i ran out of room. Also, the freehand is WIP. So I went and bought some grey nights! The partly painted ones were assembled when I bought them, but the rest were built. I ripped all the armes and stuff off, and redid the poses myself. And last but not least, A picture of my termagants and rippers that are fully painted!!!! Yeah!!!

I am quickly learning that you must be OCD to not miss them all. So throw the medicine away and get back to the mold lines......
He looks fantastic, even considering the brain surgery scar across the scalp.....

Post by: Imperial Renegade
Well I might not be able to get home after ward. But the reason I asked was because DethRex is going up today, and he invited me to come. That way we got three people. I dont think he has a playible army yet, but I was just asking.

So I finally got around to finishing my Wolf Guard. He is an AOBR Sergeant, but who cares he worked well for my conversion. It is also the first face that I have painted, but I think it is a little washed out. I also decreased the brightness on the shoulder pads, and all the yellow. Hope you like!

That is my favorite Carnifex I have ever seen.
40377
Post by: Imperial Renegade
Thanks Honaw. I couldnt have done the pose without your suggestions.
40377
Post by: Imperial Renegade
Ok, so i did some more conversion work, and will be making a Harpy out of this. I have the reposition the head, build up the neck with greenstuff, and have to resmooth the tail. And finally add wings.
I really want to know if the tail looks good.
1
35565
Post by: Sentinel
Just needs some smoothing to put it in line with the plastic. Oh, and I would suggest poking holes and such to continue the pattern from the plastic tail.
What wings are you thinking of using?
40377
Post by: Imperial Renegade
Im not exactly sure. I was thinking about LOTR Barlroge wings, but im not sure if they would be big enough. My plan is buy those, or buy a plastic toy with good looking wings, and then.........CANIBALISE!!!!!! MUAHHHHAAAAA! Ehem.....So thats my current plan. Good idea with the Tail though, I did not think of that.

Nice work on the Carni! I like the "smoke" stacks on the back....nice blend as it looks organic and not like armor! The Vindi is really nice! Like it a lot. The freehand is better then what I could ever do! I was at the flgs getting some red paints for my Blood Angels and took a look at the Space Wolves grey and it looks pretty much like that.....maybe a bit brighter.

Thanks everyone, Do any of you suggest a good color to highlight the blue with? I wanted two different layers of highlighting, but cant seem to decide on a color. I also washed the carnifex in my signiture Burnt red, painted his sack that he holds, that goes to his Biomorph, Finished his face, and Drybrushed on the Bleached Bone. I will take Pictures, hopefully later today.

You might try shading if you dont like extreme highlights. Just a shade higher then the color you have..... dont want it to look cartoony.

I am a true fan of the realistic bug look that some very good painters put on their nids.....
Yours are in that group. I love the teeth and the red/black shading on the chest and limbs. Very cool color combo for that...
I dig all that SW iconography on the track....
Is it all resin stuff? I know some of the pieces are, already, but some of them look like bits from plastic models that are just white....
40377
Post by: Imperial Renegade
The side doors and the rear door are FW SW doors, and yeas they are resin. The rest are just plastic taken from battelforces and such. Thanks for the comments, That made my day about the relistic bug look. Im glad my work is somewhat recognized. Thanks.

Ok, So I recently was commisioned to do some tau. I have done one model already for this person, and it was to redo his Crisis Battel suit. As for the models I am painting now, They were primered with car primer from The Home Depot, and were compleatly caked with 6 layers of different color scemes. Need less to say, He has commisioned me to "redo" The models. I had a friend stripe them for me, (I had no striping agent on hand) And he did a great job. I went and reprimered and painted them. Enough talk, and on to the pictures. C&C are welcome as well as constructive critisism. Enjoy! Pictures make it look a bit grainy, but that is not the case.

Thanks Cap! Ive been looking for a tutorial on how to do lava bases. I looked on dakka, and found one, and thats where I got this idea. I asked the customer if he wanted a better base and he said that was exactly what he had in mind. I would redo it, but he likes it, so I dont want to redo it and have him say "I liked it the old way"....that would be bad. Good links though, ill have to remember those for future bases...Thanks!

I think that it looks great, when you get better, It would be really cool to se you do some blending on things like the cape!

Yeah I agree. I dont really have a large selection of green,, so I did not want to attempt mixing colors.
32169
Post by: Rogue Wolves
^ i did this sort of highlighting on my storage crates, it gives a nice comic book/borderlands feel to it.. which i do like and as long as the client likes that style all is well
40377
Post by: Imperial Renegade
@^^ Your exactly right. He did not say anything about the cloak, so im asuming its fine.

True^^ I will take that up with him tommorow......

Post by: susejo239
I think they look good.
One thing, though. The green on the cape is too extreme of a change and would be more suited to extreme highlighting. May I suggest toning down the green with like a 50:50 base and highlight of what you're using?
40377
Post by: Imperial Renegade
@^^ You may certainly suggest. I asked the customer about that today, so I will see what he says. He told me that he liked the "Comic Book" type of fade. I have asked him if he likes the cloaks or if he wants me to change them. But yeah, I do agree, it is a bit extreme.

Is that the photo making it look like the paint needs thinned? I would also do some blending on that sword.
40377

Yes, the photos arent coming out that great....I think its the light im useing...also, the sword isnt done yet. Thanks though! Good to know that someones looking out for me!
40377
Post by: Imperial Renegade
Ok, so I did a lot of work on rex the past few days, and he is alomost there....Dont freack out...I had to tak apart the model, So I could paint all of the details...Unfortunatly, there are a LOT of hard to reach places...but I think I can get them. I tryed the blending on the cloack this time, and Im pleased with it. I also darkened the red by the customers request.
Let me know what you think!......The paint has been thined, its either the light...or the camera that makes it look thick.

Camera tip: If you upload your pics to the dakka gallery, it records the camera information so we can see what the ISO, shutter speed, flash, etc.

Ok, So I went and changed the ISO, and it did help, but its still looks really gritty/thick. In person, it does not look bad at all. It looks smooth expeially when you apply paint. I asked around, and people said it is The primer that is making it happen. They said the Camera is picking out the little imperfections in the coat of primer, and somewhat amplifing them. So.....HONAW....how do you spray you guys, and not have any grainyness? I tryed spraying in the basement, and bringing the models upstairs to dry, but It made no difference. Maybe you should just show me...or maybe im to close with the spray> im not applying to much, because I can see the detail is not clogged up. Any help?

Looking back at those pics, the paint and/or primer does look extremely thick.
Do you coat your models completely with primer? One thing to try is just give the model a dusting, just enough to help paint stick. If you're spraying in the basement, you could try going outside.

I really like the shield. It looks liek your primer got a bit texturey- was it hot the day you sprayed it?

Sentinal: I sprayed it all. Not to much, and at a distance. It was just enough to cover the resin. some spots are still resin/primer. dstiengass: Yes and No. Inside temp was 73, (were I sprayed it) out side was 85. Im really sure its the primer. But like I said. in person, the model is fine. If you get really close, then it gets some texture, but its still smooth. Automatically Appended Next Post: I will say though....looking at the hand on the shield, that has 3 coats of red...plus wash. the cape has 6 base coats of catacan green. plus the extra layers of green. The hand id grainer then the cloak...maby multiple coats is key to make the camers see smooth..

You don't want to try to blend those greens on the cloak? They are quite stark

I blended the green on the cloak of rex, but not on the sevitors. The customer liked the highlight...I asked if he wanted the rest like Rexs, but he said he like the sevitors the way they are. Yes it is grainy. Its the light+camera+not perfectly smoot primer.

You layered. Blending is, well, actually blending the colors together so there are no lines between shade and highlight.

The cape looks good. What does your sister know about painting. The white could do with some highlights though.

Post by: susejo239
You can't highlight white.

Post by: HONAW
Uhh yes you can..... He takes his white and paints it onto the folds of the fabric.

Post by: susejo239
What are you going to highlight white with? Whiter white?

Post by: HONAW
I notice his cape is darker then white. The original color is white and it needs some highlights to make it stand out more.

A light beige should do the job.

Yeah you've got fuzzy rattlecan primer there man. You get that from spraying in too much heat, the drops of paint are drying before they hit the model, causing you the fuzzy primer.

OK!!! Mike on Nate....The customer wants it the way its done. He said dont change it.
@Desteingass
Actually, the primer in this guy is perfectly smooth. For some reason, the bolt gun metal is standing out making it look like that. I am dead serious, its way smoother then Hector Rex. Im going to try a different image loader, because my pics are always crappy.
