Hello everyone! Well time to start a new blog. As the title suggests this will be a pre heresy Death Guard army. Basically no expense spared, everything is Forge World! The idea came about when I was doing a model for the pre heresy SM Conclave run by Smurfwedge. I converted a marine and painted him up as a pre heresy Death Guard.
Here is the final result and some of the wip pics to show you how he was done;
WIP pics;
So that was the model that started it all!
Currently I have the following models for the army;
1 Land Raider Proteus
1 Mk 1c Demios Pattern Rhino
1 Relic Contemptor Dreadnought
Tyberos the Red Wake
10 MK4 Maximus Armour marines
5 MK3 Iron Armour
5 MK2 Crusade Armour
5 Mk2 Assault Marines
5 Mk5 Assault Marines
10 MK6 marines
Character conversion set
Space marine boarding Armour set
10 Phobos pattern bolters
Early Mk space marine heavy weapons
Small brass etch eagles
I have started building and painting the Land raider;
I've not got any further yet with the Land Raider.
I have trimmed up a squad of 10 marines and have made a start on the bases;
I took a squad of mk6 marines from my Emperor's Wings project;
So clearly plenty to be getting on with! Quite a lot of building to do and loads of painting, I always like white models but they are a lot of trouble to paint well! The progress on this army might be a bit slower than on others as I want to do it well considering how much just the models cost!
Any C&C so far is welcome and suggestions to go along with the theme. I'll update when I can, I can't wait to show you the Forge World jump packs! They are things of beauty!

I really like the conversion of the helmet in the 2nd one, and I also really like all the old school armor used. The pre-heresy theme is being presented really well.
The painting looks crisp, and good, however the weathering/blood spatter effect is a little OTT to me, but that's just a personal opinion, the actual technical execution seems quite good..

Thanks that model has gone for the charity auction, I don't think I will be using quite that level of weathering and blood. I had just been playing Space Marine on the Xbox and got a bit carried away! I liked that he looked as if he had been slogging through blood and bullets. Automatically Appended Next Post: Another quick suggestion, all my pics are in the Gallery just click on the photo so you can zoom in. If you like a photo of a finished model or unit, please vote for it. I spend a lot of time on Dakka and like to see what people think of my models!

Thanks Perkustin for stopping by and posting. I wasn't pleased with the nose either but once painted up it improved the look. Never fear I have left the sculpting to Forge World this time, probably won't be any need for my amateur sculpting skills!

I'm very tempted, not sure if my sculpting skills are up to it. I could give it a go... I would like the model that Scribor did, not sure if he is selling it under a different name yet as he was told to stop by GW. He seems to be getting round a lot of that trouble by calling them Sci-fi knights etc. The other thing is that there are no rules for Primarchs but I suppose I would just play him as one of the Heroes from which ever codex I use to play these models.
There is an idea! Which codex should I use? The Death Guard are supposed to be relentless, hardy and durable, any ideas?

I'll have a look at it, I didn't know you could have a whole army of veterans. I'm lucky I suppose that I got people to agree to donate Christmas money towards the latest purchases, it really softened the financial blow. Also I got something cool for Christmas not socks or a scarf! Oh hang on a min I still got two scarfs! Damn!

I take it you are saying I should just make some house rules up. Personally I prefer to play them as an official codex so I can do tournaments and just say, ok they are blood angels, he counts as Dante etc. but still make it all look really Death Guard.

Thanks Jarra! I watched your mephiston video set and had a look at Mortarion. Great Mortarion model, he is epic! Scythe might be just a tad too big for me. I really like the Terminator guards, they are cool, I'm still considering what to do for terminators for my own project. I noticed when I watched your videos that you make casts of a lot of your stuff, does that mean you can reproduce another Mortarion? I would be interested if the price was right. Great work otherwise and Cruise control is delightfully sick!

Again I think you are talking house rules but I would like to take them to tournaments so they should really be legal.
No new pictures as yet but I have under coated the torsos of the Mk4 squad and hoping to get some paint on today so there should be an update later.

Yes that amount of Forge World is a bit intimidating and I really don't want to mess them up considering the cost! We'll have to keep an eye on each others progress! Currently reading Deliverance Lost, Corax is quite cool and I'm getting a yearning for Raven Guard too now! Thanks for popping over to say hello.

Thanks Hazzer, I had realised, this model was for my other project but stolen for this one. Somewhere I have the sprue that the power axe came from with an earlier MK of pistol.
Ok, a bit more paint on the first marine!
I must say that working on this model I'm not that impressed with the quality. Surprising I know but it has lots of little bits/bobbles/imperfections that I didn't notice when preping it. The back packs were the worst, really badly miss moulded to the point where I am considering talking to Forge world about them. Yep I always work up from black now, I tried working down from white with some Tau and it was excruciating!
Well I've been working some more on the white but after uploading the pictures it doesn't seem like much has changed!
I've got to decide on what to do with the shoulder pads now, obviously Death Guard symbol on one side but what for the other? A typical tactical marking? Index Astartes wasn't written buy this time so I could put whatever I liked on there! not too much detail to see on the only bit of pre heresy artwork I have for the Death Guard.
Ant ideas?

What do you mean by studded shoulder pad? They are both normal on this mk of armour.
I have decided to paint over that weathering and keep them clean for now, possibly weather them later.

Thanks Overwatch I too need to get off my backside and do some painting, I want this to be a tournament army more fluffy than competitive and aimed at best painted rather than winning tournaments. Also just got myself a RT landraider from ebay, I'll paint it up and see how it looks before I commit to putting it in the force, they do look a little dated espescially next to the prometheus!

I'm getting quite excited about my daughter arriving, I'm getting close to finishing the nursery and the mural I'm doing on one of the walls. It is a fairy forest which I'm hoping is enchanting rather than creepy. I'll probably post a pic once it is finished.
Thanks Young Logan.

The coolest Dad would paint a vague, ominous shadow of a Lictor stalking the fairy forest.
I guess you're just not cool enough...

Mmm I think the wife might have something to say about that! On a positive note I have finally finished the first Death Guard marine, pics tomorrow! I entered him in the open competition at Golden Demon on the off chance he might make the cut but it was too much of a long shot and he didn't make it. Still a really cool start to the squad! I did get some of the new Cataphractii Terminators with special weapons!

Is the Angron model to scale and playable?

He is big but not huge, he comes on a large base with three other marines on it being knocked out the way and you can detach him on a terminator sized base from the big one. I'll try and upload a pic.

WHAT. Jealous!
May I poke you a little about the Emperor's Children? Do they run with any special rules specific to the Legion? Any motion towards Fabius Bile's experiments upon the higher ranking officers of the Legion? Eidolon, as an example, received his noise-marinesque//sonic attack before Istvaan III.

So here is the finished model though I have already noticed something that also needs doing now I am looking at the photos!
Erikr,
As a treat here is the stat line for Fulgrim WS 8 BS 6 S 6 T 6 W 6 I 8 A 5 Ld 10 Sv 2+/3+ 380 pts
There are additional rules for him, such as war gear etc and there are rules for legions as a whole which are quite cool & of course you get to use all the new funky pre-heresy tanks etc.
Mortarion the Reaper WS 7 BS 5 S 6 T 7 W 7 I 5 A 5 Ld 10 Sv 2+/4+ 425 pts
Angron WS 9 BS 5 S 7 T 6 W 5 I 7 A 6 Ld 10 Sv 3+/4+ 400 pts
Horus The Warmaster WS 8 BS 5 S 7 T 6 W 6 I 6 A 5 Ld 10 Sv 2+/3+ 500 pts
These are the four Primarchs covered in this book plus a few more units for each army and a shed load of back ground.

Damn! I can't wait for the book to be released, will be blowing some uni money on that. Same goes for Fulgrim...
Your Death Guard looks excellent, as per usual! Hopefully one day we may be able to play a game or two with some Heresy-era Marines.

The Primarchs are £50 each! They had 1000 Angron models at games day and they sold out around 11:30!

Actually there were 20 but two were killed by the emperor & their legions rolled into the ultramarines I think. That would be £1000 if they made all 20, ouch!

Your marines look great
I bought some of the Maximus armour marines myself but when I'd finished building them I noticed that they were all holding their guns in a weird position.
Is there certain arms that are meant to go together to get them positioned like yours?

Hi Thamor,
Thanks for dropping in. I didn't pick any special arms just the first ones I cut off, I can't remember if i did on this model but some times a little bit of green stuff is helpful where the arms join the torso to get a better position. I'll let you know what happens with the next 9 from this squad.

Small update, maybe more later today.
So I got 5 assault marines from ebay, not posed how I would like them exactly but still cheaper than buying from Forge World direct!
I have also built the Cataphractii I got at Games Day;
I can't decide with the captain whether to have his helmet on or not, I'm leaning towards having the helmet on, what do you guys think?
Helmet off?
Or on?
I'm about to undercoat hem and then start the painting of these two units plus the contemptor and the rest of the tac squad. Still annoyed I need to visit Forge World again because in the new Legion army list you need a unit of ten with boarding shields! Grrr!

I would say helmet on. While the face is nice, tactically I don't understand why there are so many marines running around without protection on their heads. That's how lasguns kill you. Don't waste his geneseed on dying from a puny guardsman.

I'm always a fan of helmeted marines so that is how I'm leaning so far. Anyone really like the head instead?

i like the head sculpt but i think it maybe slightly too small for the body ? i would go with the helmet and paint it a contrasting colour

the bare head looks better, as it actually shows the sense of scale between the suit and its wearer. which makes a bloody nice change!

Personally, I like the bare head, even though it makes no sense . I like the cinematic look of it. And this thread is exactly what I have been looking for. I wanted to start a pre-heresy death guard and iron warriors force, and this is what I imagine the death guard would look like. Well done. Oh also, any cool stuff for death guard in the IA book?
And I need to know how you did this white. What I usually do is mechanicum grey (whatever that color is), then administratum grey, then skull white. It looks like you are doing something similar?

Lots of interesting points of view here, I have also been discussing it with some friends on Facebook. One of my friends who has won multiple Golden Demons has advised the head as it provides more character to the model and makes more of a story rather than the anonymity of the helmet. I think I'm going to go with the head, it will also allow me to go to town on painting his face. Thanks for all the input. hopefully a painting update tomorrow. (I keep doing a double space hoping that a full stop will appear, too much ipad!) Under coated most of the assault marines and the Cataphractii as well as the unit of the Tartaros Pattern Terminators. Unfortunately the can of black ran out so a slight set back. Still should get round it tomorrow!

Hey reaper man new idea, model the helmet broken showing the face? You know half the face, half the helmet, add some gizmos and such. sounds like it would go well.

Yep he is leaning over a bit too much, I was trying for him stepping up over that rock but it might need him being repositioned.

That sounds awesome but like a lot of work!!!
Ok so some more progress today got the base coat of grey on a lot of the models;
First the Cataphractii;
Next the Tartaros Termies;
Assault squad;
Tac Squad 1;
Tac Squad 2
I'll be starting on the white soon, also I forgot to undercoat the first contemptor, Damn! I'll get him done soon too.

I think I'm going to chicken out of that one for this army but it is an idea that I might do for next year's Golden Demon entry.
