Hi everyone! My name is Joey and I'm totally new to Warhammer Fantasy and I was immediately drawn to the wood elves due to their awesome models, lore and wide range of colour schemes. I’m trying to get a feel for the hobby and have decided to document my experiences from buying my first box of Warhammer ever (a Wood Elf Battalion) through all the stages of planning, assembling, painting, battling right up to the final goal of entering a tournament and attending Games Day!
I’m certainly no expert in any of this, having no artist skills or ventured into any sort of strategy game like this before, but I think whatever the outcome it will be an interesting experience. I would be happy for anyone’s thoughts, feedback, encouragement or (constructive ) criticism, both with my modelling & painting, along with the general idea of a “start to finish” documentary of the building of an army by a total beginner through to the final stages of battling!
Thanks for all the positive feedback so far!
I'm going to use this post as the archive for finding videos. Please choose your episode below!
Congratumalations on another great entry! And to your Wood Elves for their first win. I'm honoured by the mention, glad i could help.
Feedback on the video:
1. A triumph over Goblins is no greater than any other force really. It's down to how well their list has been structured and how good the player was. On saying that, i'm sure you played fantastically. Well done! 2. Defensive play is the best in my opinion, i use it in most of my gaming exploits although funnily enough not in Warhammer. The main reason for that is for a change of pace and so i can roleplay it a bit. The other reason is that most games are limited to 6 turns and many of them will require you to capture objectives and such. That makes standing still quite a bad idea. My suggestion would be to try and mix attacking and defense. This is quite advanced stuff though so don't worry about it just yet, concentrate on painting and learning the rules.
3. On that subject, try writing lots of hypothetical army lists. Writing lots of lists will force you to read the important rules over and over again. You may also want to get yourself a rulebook. 4. Russell Brand? Must be the accent...
Watched the second video of your "Start to finish - A Wood Elf Documentary" (not sure if the name will stick, but what the heck)
Your right, about the sheer amount of information that can be fired your way, When I first started playing/painting way back when, I found it easiest to work on only one or two specific parts of the game till I had a firm grasp on what should happen (such as movement and shooting) once I had that then moved onto adding more and more. While this worked for a young lad who had the attention span of a gnat perhaps the same train of thought could be applied if you feel your getting to much information?
You asked about game length? I think it comes down to a couple of factors:
- How many points your playing - a large 2000 point game will take longer than a 500 point game
- How experienced you are - if you have to consult rules/tables, this will slow the game down a bit
I had a game last Thursday at my local Games Workshop and we played a 1000 point game from about 7:30pm till 9:00pm when the store closed so the time you played sounds about right.
Nice to hear you offering shout outs to those who have commented, one sounded like my comments but had a different name attached to it, it shows that it must have been good advice if more than one person has mentioned it
The pictures on your Introductions thread look really good, I'll show you one of my first models to give you a comparison on where I started to where I am now (hid in spoilers because its quite shocking, and I wouldn't want to derail the thread to much) so if your painting as well as your are now, it can only get much better!
You'll notice I host the pictures here on Dakkadakka It means that other people who check from work don't get blocked by over zealous firewalls.
It was just good advice! lots of people said roughly the same thing, but I'm glad it's all consistent information!
I love the first picture It has a kind of 90's colour scheme to it- pale yellows and lots of colour haha but good lord your second photo is amazing.
How do you get to a point that your hand stops wobbling about every where messing up smooth lines?
Indeed, there are only a few things people can really bring up so sometimes you will get the same advise doled out time and time again.
The first guy was painted around 1997, the paints weren't thinned, the brushes to large and I only had access to some ink's to shade, you couple this with youthful exuberance... well the possibility's are endless. I do distinctly remember that when I finished the model I thought it was a master piece and I would like to at some point repaint him to a high level, or possible get a second one of the model so I can keep a small reminder of where I've come from.
The second pic? that's my latest work (finished on Sunday IIRC) and I found that practice really does help when you are trying small things, I also have a cheat method when it comes to scripture on the banners and scrollwork. Can I ask how you are currently painting? It's a weird question however I've seen many people who paint differently and they achieve different results because of it.
I sit with the model cupped in my left hand with the left forearm propped against my desk, the right hand palm rests against my left palm with the left forearm propped up against the desk as well, this gives me a solid frame to minimize movement and thus spoiling a strait line while still allowing me to spin the model or reposition it without worry.
I've seen some painters who will prop one elbow on top of the desk and use the other hand free so they can move around the model without issue, but I tried that once with disastrous results (of which there are no remaining models to show those results )
I paint elbows on table holding the base and face as close as possible. I find my self holding my breath when I'm doing something particularly tricky :S
I done the foundation paint on my spell singer and a light wash but I have a feeling I'll be painting for quite a while this evening.
Don't feel the need to finish the model in one go, there's no pressure. Maybe finish it tomorrow? Unrealistic or forced targets will kill your hobby 'get up and go.' Take it at whatever pace makes you comfortable and most importantly, have fun!
Once I start I'll want it finished and lovely- I hate the beginning when it looks all splotchy- it's the drying part that's frustrating I want to keep going
"Don't feel the need to finish the model in one go, there's no pressure. Maybe finish it tomorrow? Unrealistic or forced targets will kill your hobby 'get up and go.' Take it at whatever pace makes you comfortable and most importantly, have fun"
Probably the best advice posted so far.
Hey Joey, if it wasnt for the effort you put into these Videos I'd cry foul!!
Seems you have a decent amount of natural skill if these are your first models. I'm a bit of a nut about bases however, I'd try to break up some of the grass on your bases, it looks a bit too clean at the minute... prehaps a mud patch here or there?
Cry foul? Why?- Is it my awesome dryads?
In fairness I only think they look nice now is because I discovered highlighting.
Plus due to my gender -though I hate to say it- make up has some part to play in me picking it up quite quickly. Eye liner is some tricky business I'll have you know
Had a lot of advice on bases actually a mud patch some great! How do I do that? spoldge some brown paint around. Or any pictures you could show me?
I have some experience in making videos, and if you dont mind here is a couple of tips: Your sound is very low (sorry, English is not my first language, anyways I had to turn up my volume and next I will blow my ears off when I want something else). And I dont think you need 7 min + Peoples attention-span are not up for it. I'd say 4-5 min max. Perhaps start a new video for later release after that. Just my 2c.
No no, it's all appreciated. I'm new at literally all of this, videos included!
Short and sweet got it. It's just that there's so much to cover!!
Guess that means a lot of videos
TheJoeyberry wrote:Also Love the mud effect- seems fitting with it being autumn too. Plus, walking trees= some messy grass I would imagine!
True, I'm not big on dryad fluff tho, when they arent defeating goblins on the battle field do they take root in a forrest somewhere? If so, maybe nice to muddy up some of those treeguys - Maybe have one up rooting himself?
Tortured-Robot wrote:Maybe have one up rooting himself?
That's a fun idea but for her first models i'd suggest keeping things simple, conversion work looks horrible without practice and she'll end up ruining her very pretty models. Hell, my conversions still look like someone has vomited resin on them, it's not something anyone should jump into at the deep end.
Wood Elves? Aspiring new painter? Videos instead of walls of text?
Consider my subscribed!
Also those Dryads look fantastic! They blow my first army (yes not my first model but my first army!) clear out of the water. And since you can only go up from your first model I must say I will be following this thread with great interest
A unique appraoch to a P&M thats for sure. Though i gotta admit:
Spoiler:
i haven't watched the videos. i kinda have a phobia of youtube videos where people are talking at the Camera. Find it too 'forward' like someone that hugs you if you dont know them that well... Lol hard to explain.
Anywaysssss........
Any pics?
Ladies are fairly well suited to hobby in my experience, a dewd will start loads of projects but girls have a longer attention span. So will actually finish their projects. [Looks at own unifinished paintjobs, Unopened Kits and half completed sculpts.]
I really like how the leaves came out on this one. I added an extra set of branches to his back!
Here are some pictures, although in the next video I'm incorporating stills showing my progress with the spellsinger and talking over it for the most part. I'll post photo's here as I go anyway
Johnny-Crass wrote:...those Dryads look fantastic! They blow my first army (yes not my first model but my first army!) clear out of the water...
Seconded, your Dryads put the entire 2000pts of my first army to shame. In fact, i was going to put them on dakka to document the DIY fluff but i'm more ashamed than ever now. Lol!

I feel you, i tend to listen to for the main part rather than watch, the eye contact is a bit intense. I thought i was just weird but i enjoy your observational comedy skills, bravo!

<Looks at his own signature. Remembers all of the stuff that he didn't write down. Cries. >
Really interested in seeing your Spellweaver, J-Dizzle. I wonder if that'll catch on? And since everyone is still avoiding the bad 'Treevous' joke, i'll take the nerd bullet. <Respectful clap.>
Great show. (I wanted to say 'great idea with the videos, and then realized I've said that already...)
Faces? Have them all wear helmets! Sorry - that would be my only tip on faces. Its a topic I struggle with myself. Maybe that's why I choose greenskins.
Firstly, epic jumper. You should make that a theme. And a title sequence? How posh!
On topic: Well done on your latest paint job! It's looking good. Don't worry about blending just yet, it's an advanced technique you can pick up later, i can't stress enough that you should start relatively simple until your well practiced in the basics.
White primer might be a good idea if you want the whole model to be brighter. Also, it doesn't look to be the case but if your paint is too thick it won't matter what is underneath it. Keep your paints thin and do as many layers as you have the patience for. It might seem counter intuitive but multiple, very thin layers of the same colour will give you a nice solid layer at the end and you can fine tune how much the colour underneath will effect this one. Don't be surprised if the first layers are blotchy and patchy, as long as the paint isn't running into the details like a wash then it's going fine. If your favouring a black primer and you want to paint a pale area like face then lots of layers and time is your friend, stick with it and it will come together.
If i can figure out how to upload files for you to download(Never done that before. Rapidshare?) then i'll send you links for some painting tutorials. I have one on faces/eyes i believe. That should be of interest to you.
As for naming your spellweaver. Hmmm... Got it. Kira Sakura - That's my entry. Kira after the coolest female 'elf' of all time and Sakura from the cherry blossom.
Nice name suggestion!!
Yeah the face is a work in progress in two weeks she'll look like Megan fox!!
Layering is my current preference- I'll give blending a go with the horses- but I'm going to be planning what I want in my 1000 point army next video rather than just have a load of painting ones.
Didn't realise how many options I have for the army though- kind of want to go to 1500p so I can get a tree man
Hey, nice new video - the production values have improved I'm expecting special effects next time haha.
Your slinger looks good and will fit in nice with your tree guys. I have to agree you have had a bit of a mare with the face.
For a simple method for elf faces I would try-
White undercoat - base coat of elf flesh, - when dry give it a wash of a 50/50 mix of water and devlan mud, let the wash do the work for u! - when dry rework the raised areas of the face with first elf flesh then finally 50/50 mix of skull white and elf flesh.
Name? Embrace your efforts, - Joannos Riveros ......very elfy.
Don't be put off - faces are one of the harder things to get right.
A tip I found with red is if you are going bright red you can use vomit brown to highlight (this shocked me quite a bit but it really does work)
Regarding faces, I basically started my army with all helms, I was never good at faces at all. Now as this was your first face you've painted I believe you might be a bit harsh on yourself, I'm pretty sure that there has been no one who has been perfect the first time they tried something. so hopefully this may help with painting faces/skin. With elf flesh I would change out dwarf for elf and just add progressively more white to the mix
Spoiler:
First Stage, base face with Tallarn Flesh and give the face a good bath of Ogryn Flesh wash. The aim here is to have the wash pool in the sunken sections
Second Stage: this is just a strait dwarf flesh layer (plenty of water) focusing on leaving recess with the Ogryn wash showing, areas such as around the eyes, around the forehead area, bits beside the mouth and little bits on the nose.
Third Stage: this is a 50/50 mix of Dwarf Flesh and Elf Flesh, this stage is aimed at raising the lightness of areas where the sun would hit, so cheek bones, top of the head, bridge of the nose, eye brow region , lips, chin, the aim here is to have the first layer not totally covered up by the new mix.
Fourth Stage: This stage is just pure elf flesh, The aim here is to paint raised edges where the sun would hit it the most. This includes areas such as top of the head, bridge of the nose, eye brows and cheeks.
Fifth Stage: Eyes were done at this point, using a 000 brush I did the white of the eyes. Then with the same 000 brush for the pupil of the eye.
Hopefully this is a bit easier to see with the cropped pic's
Regarding your challenge, I'm absolutely terrible with names, but will give it a shot anyway. How about Clarissa Lightmourne or Amber Sunwave. Terrible names I know but it's worth a shot.

No no still got steam! Been working- thursday and friday.
Got to pay my internet bills to keep up this youtubing business Getting a new video out this evening about my 1000 point army list and what I want Ideally.
@Knightley Didn't see the "click to show" button (new to forums)
Those faces are excellent- I'l have to come back to Spellsinger after I've had more practise with that technique on my other guys
Automatically Appended Next Post:
New video- it's a bit late but I feel like crap and tried to find half an hour of me not coughing. Winning name is in here- I know you'll like it.
Thoughts on my army set up?
Totally understand you have you work to pay the bills (and to buy the models) Interesting video, I say this because for me I have no experience with Warhammer Fantasy, this has prodded me into looking for 1000 Point armies for Wood Elves, it seems the general consensus for Wood Elves is they are not currently a competitive army in the latest Warhammer fantasy game, however with magic Items from the main rule book you can at least have some fun (which is always the best part of the hobby)
Army Ideas below
Spoiler:
What I've picked up:
- Glade Gaurd seem to be your bread and butter core units I assume this is because they can do a lot of damage.
- Eagles are perfect Warmachine hunters but not good for anything else
Units to Avoid:
- Warhawk riders, Great Eagles, Eternal Guard and Wild Riders
So some lists I could find:
Spellweaver, Level 4 (Beasts or Loren) - 250
10 glade guard, musician, standard, flaming standard - 148 (Battle Standard Bearer)
10 glade guard, musician - 126
10 glade guard, musician - 126
10 dryads - 120
10 dryads - 120
Eagle - 50
Eagle - 50
Total 990
Highborn, Extra Hand Weapon, Shield, Bow of Loren, Armor of Fortune, Arcane Bodkins - 249
Spellsinger, level 2, Dispel Scroll - 150
Noble, Light armor, shield, Extra Hand Weapon - 98
10 Glade Guard, Champ - 126
10 Glade Guard, Champ - 126
5 Waywatchers, Champ - 128
5 Waywatchers - 120
Total 997
What ever happens I'm getting some tree kin I also really want to get Drycha at some point with a bigger point army.
I'd love to try a guerrilla warfare style with an all tree army for fun at some point- but over all it doesn't make sense wasting my elves and their handy abilities.
Hey Joey, another great update, hope your feeling okay. I was looking for four web pages which would have been great inspiration but i must have deleted the bookmarks at some point and i cant find the pages anywhere. Well three of them, i still had one bookmark but there is a chance you will already have seen it:
I haven't seen it -thanks for the input guys There's loads of army lists for 1000 points and though I don't think all the core in my battalion are necessary to use I'd like to use as much as possible (because I forked out the money for the thing) and I'm still unsure on whether the spell singer might be more useful at a later stage or whether I'm better of with something more durable at 1000 points.
Definitely want the tree kin, kind of want an eagle but I can't duplicate special in 1000p army and is one worth it?
... Read that paragraph back to myself and I'm impressed with what I;ve learnt so far. Well done me! And thanks to you guy's teaching me. You've been continuously helpful!
Going into Games workshop tomorrow will talk to the guys in there and I may have found my self a club to go to to annoy the crap out of every one there
Well if you wind up playing at a club and not at GW check out the Ultraforge Treewoman, she is a far better model than GWs treeman and I think you could do her justice
First off, loving your new video is in front of the Maltese flag - viva la Malta!
Well, okay... It’s really nice to see you enjoying your new hobby, if you want, totally ignore me but may I put forward the following advice -
Take things at your own pace - Your currently in the shiny new army phase, some people never get out of this and end up starting new armies every other month - this ends up in allot of money spent and very little finished armies heh. Stay positive, and stay Motivated!
Its really nice to see you have had a positive experience at the GW store, this I find isnt the same for everyone, I'd still be careful and take their advice with a pinch of salt - end of the day its still their job to make money out of you, What they say you need is rarely what you actually need!!
It’s a good idea to join a club like you have suggested - you'll find the war gaming a lot more relaxed outside the shop environment!
Finally, I guess.... it’s your Hobby and make of it what you will and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
So- bought my treekin today ready to file and build. So much filing to do and rogue bits of plastic everywhere. I'm scared that I'll ruin detail by trying to remove all the plastic. So much detail on them aswell!
Will be doing a video tonight of my tree kin building and paint work as much as I get done today though I won't rush them.
Not sure how autumny I can make these guys though :S
You might consider buying a Citadel Woods box. They are good for parts and they come with a tonne of leaves in canopy sections. I'm using the leaves for basing as they are optional. Lets you build up a floor of autumn leaves very quickly.
When you're removing flash(Where possible it might be best to do this before assembly.): 1. Cut off the large bits first with your snips or , carefully, with a hobby knife. 2. Try scraping the area backwards with your knife. Don't push forwards or you'll cut instead of scrape. 80-99% of the flash should now be gone. 3. Use fine grade files or sandpaper if you have to. Avoid lots of quick back and forward strokes. Use few long strokes using the entire length of the blade. Inspect the area after each stroke to make sure your not removing detail. 4. That should be the area prepped, if you have cut into the surface by mistake a tiny dab of plastic cement should tidy it up without any fuss. You probably won't have this problem though
Have fun with the Treekin. If your having trouble deciding on how to paint them get a tonne of pictures of cool autumnal trees from the internet and print them off if you can, if not stick them on a paint or word document. That'll give you a nice 'mood board' to work from. Also, think about what sort of things you would see on the trees. Mould/fungi for instance are commonplace and come in many forms. Most importantly when you add details like that, be subtle.
Not the face!!
Got rid of most of it- video will be a day late I had too much prep work to do and I've amended my army list now too so that will all be up tomorrow
Everything is looking good so far and for your first time getting into the hobby you are doing an excellent job, its good to see your doing your homework on the army list and not just painting random minis.
First time I've seen a video blog its very different and you pull it off nicely, looking forward to the next update.
Oh and painting flesh up from a black undercoat is a pain but can look really good, it can give a lot of depth to the colour. White is easier though , It really depends on how dark you want the rest of the mini on what colour undercoat you use.
Practice on a few normal guys first before you go back to the spellsinger.
I'm afraid so.
<Alternatively, insert, 'That's what she said' joke, here.>
TheJoeyberry wrote:Got rid of most of it- video will be a day late I had too much prep work to do and I've amended my army list now too so that will all be up tomorrow
Take your time! Don't force yourself or you will sicken yourself of it, and that just wouldn't be fair on your loyal supporters. Something i was told yesterday:
“The smart industrious man always over-reaches at the start of a project, but only the fool refuses to scale things back once things are under way.”
—Marc-Andre Renaud | 2012
Okay, so your not a man but you can substitute woman or person if you'd like.
Looking good and loving the top (yes half the time I comment about the videos it is talking about your awesome wardrobe)
And the treekin are nice too
On a more serious note did you ever get the list help you seek as I can get you some notes from the woodelf players in my local tournament scene next week if you want. He constantly scores in the top 3, so he is no slouch
Great video, I actually laughed out loud at some of those faces you made when looking through the bits you got. I like the condensed speed of the video combined with the music overlay, getting quite professional now eh? I also really like the idea of the hero of the week, I should have saved my face tutorial for that instead
To answer your question regarding the most difficult model to assemble? Mine has to be the old Metal Chaos Lord of Change. If anyone out there has put this guy together I'm sure they would agree with me, I made one for my younger brother about 4 months ago and neglected to take any pictures but if he ever comes around again I will.
I have a question for you now. How did you find working with the fine cast resin?
Another great installment. Though we really need to get you something more surgical for cutting, and possibly upgrade your super glue. I couldn't see the glue in the video but if it's hardware store bargain bin it's probably not going to do the job, doubly so with plastic glue. Retractable Stanley knives are great for laying carpet and opening boxes but aren't much use otherwise. For simplicity i'd suggest getting the Games Workshop hobby knife. It's one of the few tools they sell that is arguably as high a quality as you'd get anywhere else and the price isn't insane. You also get a tonne of replacement blades so you won't be rushing out to get more at the first sign of trouble. Careful though, these things are damn near medical so you can slice yourself up pretty easily.
I can't comment without applauding you on the awesome choice of music. Mitchell and Webb are two of the funniest guys on tv, David Mitchel being top 3 and Robert being top 10. "On a lonely planet, spinning it's way to damnation, amid the fear and despair of a broken human race, who is left to fight for all that is good and pure and gets you smashed for under a fiver? Yes, it's the surprising adventures of me, Sir Digby Chicken Caesar!" My favourite. A rat's anus?!
As for models that are a pain to build, some Infinity models like the Tags are supposed to be a really difficult but i haven't tried them yet. Wait until you get into converting miniatures, then building them will become pure joy.
You are always too kind I know I really must invest in some better equipment; I was going to but I bought treekin instead I had to stop filming the whole building of it because it went on for so long but I did fit in the filing and cutting.
I love David Mitchell! He's so witty and sharp I could listen to him angrily rant all day. I love Robert's Sir Digby Chicken Caesar it just seemed like the appropriate music to use!
@ Knightley... Sod doing that model! I googled choas lord of change and I instantly felt bad for you- one post said something about drilling the staff? Looks like a fassle.
@Johnny Crass- it's my favourite top of all time- but it's falling apart now- will never find a replica in camden market :( and I thank you for your excellent taste
Wow- sod that. Looks painfully annoying to me- excellent beard though!
Thinking about the colour scheme I want for them- I will convert them with left over dryad bits and bobs and make them look a bit grander.
Love the fact your already thinking about converting - very advanced for a new player/modeller. Go for it! everything can be improved with knives and glue!
Don't worry yourself with pinning - I pin every joint but I mostly work in metal, you shouldn't have a problem with plastic or resin.

Not at all, your doing something really cool that none of us have seen before, you've also got a unique veiwpoint which makes it even more special. You deserve all the praise you get! Haha, models are more fun than tools any day so i can't argue with your choice of buy! Consider tools for your next purchases though. I think everyone here will agree that the correct tools make the hobby completely different. It's easier, you get better results and i'd go as far to say it's more enjoyable! Mitchell is a kindred spirit of mine, i love that he cares enough to verbally destroy people, most of us just try and ignore them.
Tortured-Robot wrote:Love the fact your already thinking about converting - very advanced for a new player/modeller. Go for it! everything can be improved with knives and glue!
That's made me think actually, i believe i said earlier not to get involved with conversions yet until you get the basics under control, i think i should retract the statement though. Conversions got me into this hobby and have been the bread and butter of it, for me, since the second box of models i got my hands on. I know now, looking back, that my first attempts, as a ten year old child, were horrific but i was ten and i had to start somewhere. With that in mind, Joey, if an idea for a conversion takes hold then you should jump in at the deep end and see what you can do. If things go a bit wrong then we are here to help guide you back on route.
As for knives; it may be useful to pop into a local arts & crafts store [one that students would perhaps use]. I picked up a pair of hobby knives for 85p each. Blade is no different to any other knife, simply that it came with a plastic handle.
Hobby/Art supply shops should always be your first stop. Though i quite like the comfort value of the GW knife and it comes with 10/15blades if i remember correctly. In the past i've used all manner of blades. I have grown a strong dislike for retractables recently but everything else has been good. Stanley knives are normally a bit clumsy, even the small ones but they do some jobs well. If your going to be cutting very precisely or large areas then get a jewelers or razer saw too.
I'm off work tomorrow so I'll have a look at some extra tools- my first model I just filed off the moulding lines but I ended up getting weird groves by not doing it right so I knife makes more sense... but I'm also tragically clumsy fingers crossed :S (If I still have fingers to cross)
When using a knife to remove mould lines you want a scraping action rather than trying to cut. Scrape away from you and you should be fine.
That in mind I don't know a wargamer who hasn't cut themselves - so that's something for you to look forward to - just wait until you start playing about with dremel drills, then the true injury fun begins!
And asrai for wood elf info. Forums are the most helpful thing I've come across when starting up.
It's helped with the video side of things aswell and what direction I should follow while learning the basics of painting constructing, tools I need and so on.
How do I physically keep it up? No idea- I have work today but I'll be checking my phone for updates
Yes finished my horses now- just the riders and treekin to do and I'm finished ... well I may get me some eagles too, I'll see how my battling pans out since I found out last night my wood elf book is 6th edition and rubbish and I can have duplicates of rare units now. Woohoo!
I was not aware of this- are they the same models? I only wondered into GW one day and bought a battalion and started this whole vlogging business.
Thanks for the info though I shall bare it in mind
Maelstrom and Wayland are independant stockists of hobby products. Both offer a discount price on all stock, usually 10-15% from RRP. Occasionaly, Maelstrom [cannot speak for Wayland] offer extra off.
I've seen some much nicer Eagle models than GW sell but you wont be allowed to use them in store. I think they are from Reaper... Hmm, no it's not this one... Yes, this is them! This model from cmon is nice too.
As i say Games Workshop, very reasonably, don't let you use other peoples miniatures in their store but if you join a club or get your friends to play then these are great models for eagles.
Any chance of some pictures of your progress?
Yes pictures will be up rather soon- I've been working hard I've been using games workshop to battle with and for advice quite a lot. They are lovely models on the German website. I love the 3rd one down!
Thanks for these
Ah, I'm English for the most part. I was born in Germany and lived there till about 5 my mum is also German. Unfortunately I only look like my very English, northern father. I'm naturally blonde though, I used to look very krauty :S
I still speak some German and understand it well- my nan doesn't speak any English at all so I speak to her every week so- I should point out that I talk like yoda these day's all back to front and like a toddler still. Ha the Joeyberry life story for you!
Should probably include some Warhammer in this post some where. I've just painted the foundation layer on my treekin and letting them dry. Will try and add a photo of them of a minute.
Yes of coarse. I'll Be just doing photos to begin with though. Videos wont be for a while. But your free to post stuff of mine. Theres a blog in the signiture thats got some my Wip's and finished things. My user name is cortez on there.
The rest the people are the lads I game with.
Peace
Super tired but video is done- Any thoughts on tree names? Also a little unsure if different tree species works on these guys since there is only 3 of them. Might get more it'll look more normal with a larger unit.
I missed a pun!! I only noticed when editing- I had 10 I think I left out "branching out" as one.
I couldn't resisit the facial foliage it looked hilarious Thanks knightley
Yay Thanks Johnny!
I think frame by frame because I'll be doing it in Games Workshop because I'm still unsure on most of the rules. They're not so keen on me filming in store because of younger kids that may pop in so I'll just rake photos an take over it.
Johnny-Crass wrote:With your battle reports will you be doing elm live or frame by frame?
<Claps respectfully.>
Great video J! You did a great job with the treekin, they look lovely. I like how you incorporated the vine to cover the mold line, for future reference though: GW have just changed the material they cast some models in(Finecast) and they are having some expected teething problems with the casting. One of the likely mistakes they will make is not getting the two sides of the model lined up properly, if you have that problem again, just take the model back and show them, they will replace it no problem. Also, if you open it in the shop it means you don't have to go home and come back to replace it. Never mind that now though, your treekin look fantastic, i particularly like the colours of your sprites, they show up well against the trees but blend in with the rest of the model simultaneously. Thats no easy task! Congrats!
Very nice progress to date. But unfortunately you are carrying on a belief of mine - all woman either go for some sort of elf (my ex immediately went for Dark Elves...) or some sort of horrifying gribbly (friend's ex went for Daemons and another friend of mine squees for Tyranids are adorable...she scares me so).
With regards to purchasing from GW and the like? It's down to personal choice. Most say not to - buy online and so on and so forth - this is all well and fine but it doesn't hurt to support your local GW, particularly if you know the staff and thus know some of the financial standing!
DarkStarSabre wrote:With regards to purchasing from GW and the like? It's down to personal choice. Seconded, i always buy from GW when i can for that reason alone. Actually, more to support the company than a particular store.
You guys are supportive as ever. @LostSoulCasey'sLaw I did that with the spellsinger (Amber) she had an air bubble in the staff and it was horrible. Not one finecast model I've bought so far hasn't had bubbles or bad joins in it somewhere. Most aren't noticeable though so I'm not worried but the vine I didn't notice until after I was filing so I felt a bit bad to have sent it back. I will check in store in future though.
@DarkStarSabre I know I know- but bear in mind I had no idea what Warhammer was I chose them because they seemed roguish and cool... and pretty. Crap.
It was a toss up between wood elves or tomb kings in fairness- but the battalion box was ten quid cheaper lololol
@Totured-Robot... Nicely done Sir, nicely done.
Sorry for the late reply- I did a cover shift at work. Ruined my painting day!!

Don't feel to bad, it's a big company so they will have made profit deficiency allowances for this period of errors. And the model you return would probably just get binned whether you'd filed it or not. I've bought one finecast model so far and it was 99% perfect, hopefully i stay lucky. Once you get good with green stuff you'll be able to fix most of what you get without much trouble or time.
More shifts at work for you means more models for us to ooh and aah over in the long run.
Bad luck on the finecast. I am on number 8 and they have all been perfect (aside from minute bubbles that you can hardly notice). Also it is a shame you're across the pond as I have a few eagles I would throw your way (I thin my collection by helping new hobbyists).
I was going to go out on a limb and make a few more tree puns but I thought it was best to just leaf it there. After all it is best to bough out when you have the chance!
Johnny- that's really nice of you- not to worry I will get to work and scratch up some monies and get the eagles. Tomorrow is my first actual battle not against a Games workshop staff member but I will be doing it there to get some help from the staff. A kind soul I met there last week challenged me to a battle against his tomb kings. Will do a battle report- sort of.
If I ever come to the states by some miracle I challenge you Johnny!
@Talarn- Thank you, and sorry to your wallet. Truly- this hobby is expensive (as I'm learning) but I'm already fairly emotionally invested in my guys. The damage is done.
I already feel bad when I think of future armies I will chose because it feels a bit like cheating. :S Perhaps I'll go to 40k- then at least it's a different game and my wood elves won't judge me!
TheJoeyberry wrote:I already feel bad when I think of future armies I will chose because it feels a bit like cheating. :S Perhaps I'll go to 40k- then at least it's a different game and my wood elves won't judge me!
I don't think anyone could blame you.
The signature below is proof that I appear to have some sort of ADD.
Is it bad I'm planning Flesh Tearers and a Vampire Count army inspired by the old Zombie Pirate list?
Great stuff The videos themselves looks better too. Following with interrest.
Mutton-chops is my favorite so far!
And here I'm going to walk out on a limb by saying: This hobby is not that expensive... Remember that you use a lot of time building, painting and enjoying your minis. You even get to play with them an infinite number of times! Imagine if other hobbies was like that. You buy a pair of bowling shoes and then you can bowl whenever you like for free? Or how about going to a movie; it lasts 2 hours for how much? I can think of many hobbies that are more expensive than this.
Granted; I can think of many that are less expensive too ...
It'll be less expensive than the 5 or so years of games subscriptions and consoles I've bought over the years I'm sure. It's a valid point. It's just more money in one burst which I guess hits harder than the cost spread over the enjoyed time.
I've had mostly good feed back about the puns- so I'll stick with it

Ha! Nice Right battle tomorrow I need some beauty sleep- or angry hype me up for battle sleep or something like that! It's against the tomb kings- How do I defeat?!
Good night!
I can only offer the standard tactics. - kill him until he is dead, be humble in defeat .... and rub his face in it in victory. In my experience victory dancing is a must.
I lost!
Took about 3 hours though! I put up a fairly good fight. I didn't get get to use my hail of doom arrow because I basically got rear ended by apophas... the swine.
Yes lots!
I spent four and a half hours in total at the Workshop- the manager was helping as was a few guys who popped in they stayed for 2 hours guiding me through it so I have a lot of information to write. Was loads of fun and the victor bought me lunch!
So- this is my first battle report and I’m unsure of any specific lay outs it’s meant to be in. I’m just writing what comes naturally to me.
**Don't worry video fans - there will be a video of this up Saturday Night. (GMT) I've been super busy at work and people are hounding me for details of the Glorious First Battle, so I'm posting this quick summary***
I walked into Games Workshop case in hand and nervous at the realisation that I wouldn’t be playing a staff member who would basically tell me what to do and how many dice to roll, but a real person with more experience than me and the desire to win as much as I did. My opponent was very nice to me and helped me set up and though we were both beginners I was clearly still new to even the earliest preparations required. I shakily took out my dryads and noticed Treevous -My Poor Treevous- hadn’t survived with limbs intact through the journey and I made a feeble attempt to make him whole again. He ended up Threevous. My treekin looked menacing and agitated and I made a point to place them as far forward as possible. “Take that TK chariots- I plan to mess you up” I said... to myself. I also asked for a wood and I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw one was already on the table. I exchanged a quick grateful glance with the manager thanking him for the comfort blanket that was my forest.
With all my units set up in the best way I could manage. We rolled. I won. My turn first. (I forgot/didn’t write down what I rolled just what happened)
--==THE DEPLOYED ARMYS==--
First turn- Wood Elves Movement- Dryads moved to the forest. Treekin to the front as my offensive. Glade guard to the left scouts the my other woods in the centre.
Magic- Level 1 Spellsinger casts tree singing; successfully move trees 2 inches forward!
Shooting phase- Took out four skeleton archers with my glade guard that were directly opposite. No wounds from my skirmish guard in the woods to the chariots- toughness was too high.... worth a shot...See what I did there?
Tomb King Turn 1 Movement- His Chariots charged my cavalry. I roll to flee and run 8 inches back to avoid that nasty impact damage... Score!
Magic- His liche tried to cast Ptra’s Incantation of Ricthous Smiting, which not only would give his archers 2x attacks, but regenerate dead solders! He had 7 power dice and I got 6 dispel dice. Since he only had a 1 level 1 wizard, I threw everything I had: double six - DISPELL!!
Shooting- One of my glade guard died- this made me sad/angry and momentary visions of melting my opponents miniatures flashed before my eyes before I regained self control. I did not melt his figures.
A failed charge from his chariots meant they could not shoot.
--== THE BOARD AT END OF TURN ONE ==--
Wood Elves- Turn 2 Movement- Charged treekin into chariots. It was glorious. I failed to rally my glade riders and they fled 12 inches and I lost all respect for them.
I moved glade guard 5inches to get into short range for my strength attack bonus. Boo yah.
Magic- moved the trees 3 inches forward providing more cover. My branchwraith’s (THREEVOUS!) attempt was dispelled. Rage images occurred- I in turn dispelled them.
Shooting- Killed 3 more skeletons with my glade guard.
Combat- Treekin vs Charots. I got to roll 10 attack dice. as Mossen Chops is an Treekin elder. With this I destroyed one chariot.
Retaliation- 9 attacks failed. Horses Failed- Chariots suck.
TREEKIN STOMP! Oh ! Stomp is amazing! I obliterated another chariot which caused the remaining dusty git to crumble due to losing the combat! A thank you!
--== MOMENTS BEFORE THE CHARIOTS WERE DESTROYED BY MY STOMPIN' GOOD TREEKIN ==--
Tomb kings turn 2 Apophas- the sneaky sod rose up behind me to rear end my glade guard.
The massive heavy duty skeleton tomb guard moved to my treekin.
Magic- He resurrected 2 skeletons.
Shooting- I lost two glade guard
Combat- Viney face Treekin died. In retaliation I killed 2 of his unit and I suffered no further wounds due to ward save.
So this is where it starts to fall apart....
--== SNEAKY APOPHAS APPEARED FROM BENEATH THE SANDS! ==--
Wood Elves Turn 3 I manage to rally my glade guard.
No movement required.
Magic (THIS IS WHERE I SHOULD HAVE USED HAIL OF DOOM ARROW! WHY DID I NOT?! WHY!>!?!) No... I use tree singing.
Shooting. Kill five Skeleton archers.
Combat. Only 1 killed Tomb Guard with my remaining two Treekin- My elder died and my other one ran. Treekin Gone.
--== HAHA HE HAS MORE DICE THAN ARCHERS NOW! ==--
Tomb king turn 3 Shooting- Killed one of my skirmish glade guard in the woods.
Apophas’ breath attack killed 5 and ruined me. This made me flee and he cased me down and killed me! The scoundrel! My deep hatred of Apophas begins here. At least I took 3 of his 4 wounds off him!
--== SECONDS LATER THE WHOLE UNIT WAS ENGULFED IN SWARMING SCARABS AND DIED ==--
Wood Elves Turn 4 Movement- My dryads drag their asses from the woods and meet the tomb guard for combat.
Magic- Treesinging Dispelled.
Combat- 4 wounds curtsey of my dryads they take a heavy beating and flee 6 inches. Treevous/threevous in fairness wasn’t on top form that day. I forgive them.
As it stands. I have left;
50% Of my dryads left.
All 5 Glade riders
And 4 skirmish Glade guard.... It’s not looking good.
Tomb king remaining- Massive regenerating tomb guard of 23 including 2 characters. THIS IS WHERE I NEEDED HAIL OF DOOM ARROW YOU FOOL. Apophas
6 skeleton archers.
Tomb kings Turn 4 He flew (oh god he can FLY!) Apophas into a gap between my two units.
I dispelled his regeneration attempt.
Shooting- 1 scout gone from arrow fire. They took a leadership test and aced it. Good boys.
--== APOPHAS SETS THE TRAP ==--
Wood elves Turn 5 I moved my glade riders in a circle around the tomb guard with the idea of shooting them and running away if they shot me. Sadly this moved them pretty close to the ticking time bomb that was his secret weapon. The biggest mistake of the match here is killing Apophas... because he exploded into a cloud of scarabs killing 3 of my glade riders, which ran away in fear and 1 scout, leaving just two who continue to stick it out by passing the leadership test.
--== AND THIS WAS THE SCENE AFTER THE DAMAGE WAS DONE ==--
About here it’s been 4 and a half hours and I have no spellsinger- no treekin- 5 dryads running for their lives and 2 badass scouts left standing proud for me.
So I call the game- I need food. There’s no coming back from this. He beat me. So I shake his hand, give my remaining guys a slight nod of pride and telepathic “it’s ok you tried” speech and pack them away.
So here it is. My many mistakes and achievements and waiting it out too long and missing opportunities but I bloody enjoyed it and the victor bought me lunch. Well played sir... well played.
Nice report, shame about the outcome - atleast you got a meal out of it. Don't play fantasy myself but generally I'd suggest trying to use your force as a whole rather than a few individual units. Try to use units to support each other, target one of his units hit it with everything then move on to the next target.
Anyway I don't play fantasy so feel free to tell me where to go.
Better luck next time..... or continue to lose and pick up the free meals, either works for me.
No stomp! Oh no... at least I got away with it at the time and know how awesome it is in general.
Thanks for all the pointers guys.
@Johnny I had Amber the spellsinger and a standard bearer in the unit Apophas violated me in. Does that count? Either way that didn't end well for me :S
Free meal cheered me up- wonder how many I can get as the loser?
Great report, well written and it gave me a laugh in places. This was particularly hysterical:
TheJoeyberry wrote:I failed to rally my glade riders and they fled 12 inches and I lost all respect for them.
It's nice to see i'm not the only one personifying and reprimanding my little soldiers. I fell out with 20 genestealers once, that was an awkward train ride home. Well it would have been but i forgot to pick up my bag at the platform and it was stolen. The moral of the story: Life's short, don't hold grudges. RIP my chitinous little gribblies.
But i digress; i don't have any useful pointers to give you since i don't play Fantasy but it looks like you did very well to my untrained eye. Shame about the lose but learn from it for next time and destroy your next opponent! It sounds like your treekin are brutal, maybe try keeping the dryads close to them so you can keep the ball rolling when the big guys eventually die. The archers sound like the core of your force, it might be worth bulking them up. The horsemen didn't have much luck, is it possible for you to have them come in from another table edge, skirmishers or ambushers or something? That would really throw your opponent off and make him decide between dividing his attacks to combat the imminent threat of the horsemen or to ignore them and probably take some heavy damage on his flank. He would probably choose to split his attacks which gives the core of your army some extra time and less wounds to save.
That's just my two cents, i don't play fantasy so i'm not sure what is and what isn't possible.
Its nice to see more girls giving the hobby a go, but I've never been offered lunch after a game .... I know what this is about - boobs, is there nothing they can't do?
Still it seems like a nice rule, 'let the lady win or buy her lunch!'
Definitely worth hiring a wig. I wonder if i can get enough cash together for silicon implants, free lunch every day would pay them off in no time. As long as they aren't French!
Read the entire blog this morning while work seemed to have come to a complete standstill and thought I am not a huge fan of fantasy, it is great to see a lass playing and you enjoying yourself. I find that you ladies tend to be far neater painters than us blokes, my girlfriend proved that after her first minature was a hundred times neater than my first!!
Shame about the loss but practice makes perfect Keep up the great work!
What lovely messages to come back from work to As for the wig- there's no need. It's all about the fluttering eyes that work the "free lunch" magic.
I still have lots of painting to do but I've kept myself fairly busy and motivated with these videos and battles. I think my next one will be dwarves.
Next week I'll be a bit quieter as it's my birthday and I'm popping to London for a few days. Don't forget about me!
It's on the 16th. I leave on Monday back thursday. Might check out the London GW and harass the staff there Video should be done by tomorrow late I would imagine :S
Loving the Documentry name.
how much you 'bloomed' in the last few weeks already.
Your going to around a long time. I need to learn how to get free dinners.
Peace x

Snrk.
My own day of birth ain't until the 27th of this month. Enjoy London. Oxford Street GW ain't bad but it is tiny. Only one smaller that I know of is Meadowhall in Sheffield, which is basically a closet.
And with regards to buying you lunch....
HAH. I'd require a game first. Mind you, Lizardmen. I'd be buying lunch by default. As way of apology for a new player encountering a Slann so soon.
Then, should we meet- I will indeed battle you- and try not cry when I lose epically.
I'm going to bring my wood elf army with me. I think they should see London. I'll try and get painting done while I'm away.
Me too, I'm quite far West but I have family there.
I know I'm hooked and defensive of my little guys. They do try there hardest and have great potential. Unfortunately I'm not knowledgeable enough to guide them into victory. But I shall be!! Oh I shall be!

Here is the new link- it'll be working in about 20 minutes.
It's the extended version of my written report. I couldn't keep it short unfortunately too much information to relay- hope you don't mind
There's been no replies - has my 18 minute video put you off I'm off tomorrow to London for a few days but I think I'm going to pick up some more treekin for my birthday and demand a rematch
More treekin? Are you mad? Don't you remember the time it took for your first three? Sucker for punishment!
Really interesting video battle report - its always nice to see your wonderus face in action but, I think I prefer your written report with pics. I don't think it comes over as well in video.
Than you tortured robot. Yeah I think a 20 minute video is over kill and I didn't expect too many people to stick it out. I had the most amount of subscribers since adding it oddly but I do feel like I'm being really monotonous at times.
I will enjoy London thanks for the feed back
Another great installment, J. As Tortured said, i think a battle reports come across much better in writing. Maybe next time you should link your written report in your latest update? Anyway, keep it up and enjoy your birthday in London.
THERE IS!
It's currently my 23rd year of being alive and I got a Treeman and some woods as a gift.
However this means I have to re think my army list and go for 1500points and fit the big guy in. I'm back home now so I'll be back in video action on Saturday
Oh the treeman is finecast I did buy one treeman in metal just to see how different it is. I've been building it today and have stuck myself to the model a few times already.
Also- I read a post that said threads just die after a month or so, do I need to start a new one or can I continue here?
Threads can last forever if it's continually posted in. After a month of inactivity posting in the thread becomes Threadomancy and should be avoided unless you have a good reason, like updating a blog after a long holiday.
I don't have the ability to stay on a project for very long. As you can see from my sig i have two blogs going right now and a project in the works for later in the year, oh and i have a few other things that i haven't put on dakka. I'm determined to stay focused this year though.
It's been interesting hearing about your experiences and impressions of the hobby, both as a new player and (I think this is the elephant in the room) as a female! Girl gamers are ridiculously rare, and it's nice to see things from another perspective.
From what I've seen you're a very talented painter, and it looks like you're picking up the game quickly too.
(Happy B'day, by the way - though it looks like I'm a bit late in saying)
Thank you Skarwael- I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I'm trying not to shove the gender aspect in anyones face too much but I would imagine that my approach may be different to men even on the simpler fact that I'm making (mostly) my own deductions on what it's all about.
I've enjoyed painting the most- the building irritates me and I've glued myself to the table mroe times than I bear to count but I take extra care and time with it until I'm bloody proud of them Thanks you for the birthday wishes too. I'm uploading my new video now just about some feedback and my presents I'll be doing in the next video!
And furthermore; well done spotting the elephant. Its a nice elephant - you can see it in other blogs too: all you need is a 'different' approach: it doesn't matter what it is.Yes?
Oh and another thing: did you just call Joey a elephant? ...
Sorry, its late saturday evening - don't expect me to make sense...
TaWaaagh wrote:

Nah, it's just a saying. From wikipedia ""Elephant in the room" is an English metaphorical idiom for an obvious truth that is being ignored or goes unaddressed. "
I know, i feel so useless. I'll go away, regroup and come back with something interesting to tell you. If necessary it might not be on topic. To tide me over until then:

This is a nice blog and I especially like the way you have recorded your ventures as well. Probably a lot of what I will say has already been said, but here we go anyway.
Since I've been in the hobby for quite some time, I guess it is hard for me to appreciate how hard it would be for a beginner, not just non the gaming side, but the painting and modelling side as well. I believe your blog seems to address most of the concerns for a beginner and it is great to see how you are progressing. I especially admire your resolve to finish painting your units, which for fantasy can be somewhat overwhelming since a fantasy army generally has a high model count. Since you seem to be progressing well, as for army lists I find checking forums an ideal way to fine tune what is effective vs what is somewhat redundant. Its great that you have included this on your vlog, as its very intimidating to start a new project without some experienced guidance. I recently got back into Clan War, and took me awhile to get my head around the basics, so definitely having some outside help is a good thing.
I really like how your painting is progressing, and I can't stress enough that trying new techniques and practice is how you will get better. This is not to suggest that your painting is lack luster or bad, I find it is done to better tabletop standard, this is just a suggestion to beginners. I generally find with each new project to try something new. So for example, with my 40K Imperial Fists, I wanted to tackle painting lots of yellow, which can be difficult, as well as battle damage, weathering powders and some advanced techniques such as OLS effects. There are many tutorials on the net that covers pretty much everything, so really you can just have a go in your own time!
As for battles, I think your going the right way about it. Small point games at a good venue is the way to go. I believe its also good to set yourself up with some good opponents that will teach, challenge and not completely annihilate the fun out of the game. Everyone loses games, and some of the best games I've ever played have been loses, but getting tabled doesn't do the beginner any favors. Finding good opponents shouldn't be too hard though, be it at gaming stores or clubs.
Keep up the great effort and enthusiasm, and after reading/viewing your exploits, might paint some fantasy tonight....
I think as a motivator having a painted complete army makes me personally want to put my guys into action. After all they take a lot of time and effort and once that's finished I don't want them sitting around- I to do them proud It's not always easy to find the time with work and videos but I think the videos make me focused too.
What will you be painting?
Depending on my kids, might finally get round to assembling and painting a Cauldron of Blood for my Dark Elves.
I must agree that having a painted force on the battlefield looks much better than grey and metal. Been on both sides of that fence, and definitely prefer fielding painted stuff nowdays, on the rare occasions I get out!
Goodness this treeman has taken some time to do- all day yesterday and today not even on the detail yet.
I had a question for you guys though- I have 4 treekin now I picked up a metal one to see the difference and I was wondering if I could have a row of 4 or 2 rows of 3?
I tried to buy two more today but GW don't sell metal anymore and the other shop had none in stock so I have 4 ... I made the new one ridiculous with loads of branches He's my Elder now.
I also have a doubles match next thursday in the day I'm rather afraid :S
You definitely shouldn't grow chest hair. Moving on...
Morgan Treeman looks like a boss, good job there. I'm more interested in your new treekin elder though! Love a tidy conversion and you did great, hard to believe it's your first try. You should definitely do some more conversions, the more the better in fact! If you need any tips i'd be happy to try and help, i'm still learning myself though, keep plugging away with the green stuff. Consider getting yourself some colour shapers, it's amazing how much they help.
It's interesting that you didn't see much of a difference between Metal and Finecast. Generally speaking, Finecast has a lot better detail. It might sound weird but the weight is a big deal to a lot of us. Maybe it's a nostalgic thing but there is something about the weight of a lead miniature that just feels right.
Anywho, keep rollin'!
Dear Joey.... How can you paint as good as me now and you have been in the hobby for like no time at all! You put me to shame. The new tree folk look fantastic and yeah.
There's lots of lumps and bumps you can't see as well at the back where I was practising but I watched some tutorials abut how to use it and was shown in the shop. I got on ok with it! It felt a bit like using bluetac and putting glue on it.
I admit I prefer them heavier- they feel too fragile as plastic. I found no difference in painting though it all went on the same.
Thanks Johnny! I spent ages on it. I wouldn't say my painting is as lovely on the elves though still a bit messy.
I've tried to put little flecks on the owl but it looks really odd!
...a couple of pieces of advice that i picked up recently.
1) Colour/Clay Shapers - These things don't just make sculpting easier, they instantly boost your options without you actually gaining any ability. I got mine on Amazon.
2) This is something i figured out which, to me, is equally as important a breakthrough as colour shapers. Mixing your green stuff properly. If you are using strips of gs like i am this isn't as straight forward as cutting and squishing. Here is my technique:
a) Cut a tiny strip of your yellow and blue components. - It's easy to add to what you've got or make more but there are limited options for excess.
b) This is the important bit, remove a small area where the yellow and green components touch. The yellow area(the resin) is hardened by the blue(hardener). This will start to happen in the packet and a hard, unmixable area will form between the two coloured components. If you carefully pull on each colour it will be obvious which bit has hardened and needs removed.
c) Make sure the two parts are mixed perfectly. If you haven't mixed it perfectly you will see streaks of yellow or pockets/lumps of yellow or blue in the green. This is common if you aren't doing part b. I could be wrong but i thing i spotted the odd streak in your sculpts. Why is this bad? A hard lump in your epoxy can ruin a sculpt, also, if you have consistent greenstuff it is much easier to achieve smooth finishes.
It barely scratches the surface but it's a start. Hopefully you can get something from it. If you have any specific questions just ask. I might have written something useful on one of my blogs but i doubt it.
Treeman looks good, especially fond of the sprites. I think it looks better doing them a different colour to each other. Also like how you have a transition in the bark from mossy brown to dark brown. Adds a little life to the fellow.
Treekin looks good, and impressed that you have chosen to tackle green stuff so early in your foray. It certainly helps with conversions and kit bashes, as well as casual fix ups. I might mention that GW now have liquid green stuff, which can help with a whole range of things, form fixing air bubbles in Finecast to filling gaps. Certainly worth a try.
As for unit size, I second the 3X2 formation. You get maximum attacks against a small frontage, which will minimize the return attacks against your unit. Hope your team battle goes well. At the very lesat it will get you more used to the rules and can be a lot of fun. Just hope your ally is not some tricksy Skaven.
Love the Treeman Joey...and for the record the old metals were much more a PITA for building. The Finecast Hydra is bad enough...now imagine a metal one.
And you've learned the joy of washes!
And to answer the rules question.
Yes, you can have a rank of 3 with one in the rear until you get more!
And in regard to the metal hydras, I have two, and I didn't find them that hard to assemble, but then again, I work a lot with metal. Just like the weight.
Lovin' the video blog. I saw you got a Wood set for your B'day (hope you had a good one). You can do some really nice stuff with it, say, you want a stand out character etc... My scouts are mostly in tree's made from the citadel wood. I got the idea from someone else (think it was Corai over at warseer) but why change what isnt broken? ^^ It looked awesome, so i used it... I guess what im trying to say is, when you see a model or modeling accessory, try and look not only at what it is supposed to be used for, but how you can use it to make something else. Here's a couple of pics to show you what i mean -
You wanted to see conversions and kit bashing so here's my own favourite brew of crapfromallovertheplacecomeironwarriorswarsmith, it's made from 11 different kits and was a joy to make and paint, don't use him like just looks like a dude
True. But I, like Joey, hate assembly, so i get it done as quickly as possible. Sometimes i miss some mold lines. The one here is pretty easily fixable, just havent gotten to it...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Mold line fixed, just for you Johnny
Oh wow the scout looks amazing- how did you get the material section like that? Blending or washes- I can't get mine looking anything but block colour on the front. I much better on the capes with lots of room but on small spaces I get messy
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also love that conversion- he looks lethal! Is he holding a machine gun with one hand?
"The material section".....hmmm. The tunic was washes, cloak was blended.
The tunic/boots etc were really simple. Basecoat Dhenab Stone, then for any green bits wash with thaka green. Wait to dry. Wash green and brown parts with Devlan. , You drag the brush over the edge of the place you want shading to be. It forces the wash out of the brush and concentrates it there. Its kinda hard to explain how to apply it. Would be easier to show you what i mean. After that is dry, its just drybrushing bubonic brown (concentrated on green parts) and bleached bone (concentrated on brown parts). Can make a video of this if it will help...
I chose this scheme basically because its so fast, and i wanted them done =)
A video would be super helpful if you have the time. I've been trying that today and I've just made it look messy :S
I've also completed my tree's but it's taken forever to do the base.

A quick video about my thoughts on my first month and questions I've been asked. I ramble a ridiculous amount here. The t shirt is for you Johnny.
Well done, Joey. Ten videos in the bag and going strong! I found this yesterday or the day before or something... http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC940CEB6790444CF&feature=plcp Nice little playlist you might enjoy. It doesn't apply to me and i had it playing while i was doing something else but it might have something useful in it for you, i don't know. The guy is a great blogger anyway and i sent him a message to check out your videos when he gets the chance.
Edit: Since you are 10 videos in, what are the hopes on convincing you to pick up some 40k? If i remember correctly, Space Puppies were on your mind? Well they just got a nice supply dump of new miniatures, as did the Tyranids. Space Marines of some kind are the best first army for 40k though. So, what are the chances of seeing you paint some serious armour soon? I can certainly help with a 500 point list, you can get the whole lot, 500pts of very competitive vanilla marines, for £109.00 on the nose. Not too shabby!
It's the next thing on my list after these wood elves. They won't be my main army but I will certainly be painting a few up and checking out the difference. I like the tyrnaids - they remind me a lot of zerg though all I can hear when I see them is "NEED MORE OVERLORDS" so the space wolves where more up my street.
That being said I wanted to buy one tyranid model and try that wood varnish thing- they looked amazing!! I think it could work well for dryads.
Great rambling video Joey and no worries about what folk ask.
23 ain't old. I'm nearing 28 and know folks into their 50s who do this sort of thing. I started younger than you as well.
With regards to painting? Don't worry yourself too much. What you are doing is good. You are going to improve and you're going to improve well. I've even included a mini montage of Saurus, starting with the first thing I ever painted and going to my most recent things.
With regards to the rules? We got you covered. Trust me. I've been told I'm tournament level, just too broke to go to them. A hard life, but we can fix it.
Spoiler:
First thing I ever painted. The results are less than impressive.
About a year later. Many more colours, the eyes are still derp and the gold is a bit haphazard. Ack.
Stick with Fantasy Joey we got the better game! I forgot if I posted but once again great video and great wardrobe. Also for more fantasy goodness check out my own painting blog!
Argh spent all day painting my remaining guys layer by layer every time I look at them they still have so much needing doing- I'm going to start dreaming on red capes and gold paint like I did with the dryads.
I've been stalking you for some time now and I find you pretty cool with these "vlogs" but I would like to whine about some things.
Sound editing. In the videos sound is somewhat inconsistent (the warhammerjoyey theme song is lauder than your talking voice). If you could do anything about that would be awesome.
Pic posting. I'm not sure who's hdd you are filling with your pics but I know it isn't yakface's. So if you could would you submit pics to Dakka's gallery as it's free and there is no bandwidth limitation (like with some image hosting sites). This way you could get even more feedback as people could vote and comment your pics.
I think the only way to fix the sound is by having a microphone. Currently I'm just using the one on the laptop and if I have it too loud it only picks up the horrific sound of the fan. You're right though- I'm trying to fix it.
Ok yes I'll post some to the gallery
I love the conversion he's really sawing into that guys face haha.
@DarkStarSabre I love the model progression of the old and the new and how you've improved with practise. I'm hoping to have such picture's in years to come
Goodness gracious! I've had the busiest day ever and two battles each over three hours and I'm knackered!
First time going to a club and it was amazing! Will do my written report tomorrow evening after work

It's shorter and sweeter (I hope) than the last one.
It's a video about my learning rather than the actual battle events since it was far too indepth to cover the whole thing. Hope you like
I agree with smaller games for beginners. Also two softer armies playing two cheesey armies is not fun. Hydra and a A-Bomb? The guys should apologize IMO.
Yeh smaller games are always a good place to start and although getting destroyed isn't much fun it's probably a quick way to learn. I mean, nice evenly matched games will stop you getting fed up and keep you motivated but there is nothing like soul crushing defeat to inspire a courageous comeback!
I'm all about the revenge victory! The nastier the defeat the sweeter my next victory will be I don't want people to take it easy on me. I may be new but I'm not that sensitive and I can take it /flex !!
Fortunately I won rather nicely in my battle later than day so it's not all bad!
What spells did you have on your Weaver? Dryads with +4toughness (Flesh to Stone with Throne of Vines up) might have lasted longer vs the hydra. Also flaming attacks are a good thing to have in your army. Giving one of your Glade Guard units flaming banner can stop Regeneration.
LostSoulCasey'sLaw wrote:Choosing my favourite conversion would be harder than choosing a favourite child. Fact.
First let me start my first post on this P&M telling Casey that this will be going into my Sig as a favorite Quote!
Second, let me throw my Dismay at Johnny for not only not inviting me to the fan club, but also for not telling me that this very fun blog even existed...Shame on you Johnny...Shame
Now Joey here is what I have to say
I really like the flavor and dedication you have come into this hobby with, it really it quite nice to see someone enjoy it as much.
I must say for being a first timer you have picked up a lot of the basics very quickly and to complete 1500 points in such a short time is also awesome.
I have been working on my 1500 point WOC army and it's still not finished.
Now I can say that I have spent the last hour and something minutes watching all of your video's and reading through your blog. (Was not a huge deal as I am stuck at a drug study and found it fun to pass the time)
Consider me subbed and can not wait to see some more from your wood elves!
Joey - your vlog/blog is awesome, I wish it had been around when I first started modelling + painting!
Funniest comment so far (apart from the tree puns!): "Eyeliner is hard to do, and I do it on a train!"
Keep up the great work!
PS - just watched the latest vid - General Trevous - hahaha!
Wait, you met a man on the internet, who plays with little toy soldiers by the way, and you arranged to meet him and let him drive you somewhere? Well that's certainly not a recipe for rape. Silly, Joey!
Do be more careful in future, if you selfishly get killed by a psycho what am i going to watch on youtube?!
Otherwise, great video! Starting to feel very professional and engaging, there is a marked improvement which is making the whole experience more enjoyable.
Sounds like when you were playing, that guy was using some Jedi Mind Tricks on you and your movement.
Also Casey is very correct in the recipe for rape! If they tell you there is a cool gaming club in the basement of some place that you have to be blindfolded to get to.....Don't do it! lolz
Otherwise you dance your little heart out because now your on your way to the winners circle!!!!!!
I promise that I wasn't reckless about meeting a stranger I checked this guy was not a serial rapist/ killer before I hopped in the car. Thank you for caring... but the force was with me I'm glad you liked it! It's getting there x
No No, I've been cracking on with looking into the magic lores. Truth be told I feel like I need to be painting something at all times to be productive.
Also arranged a match at GW against dwarves this time. Against the same staff member though I am hungry for revenge so I've been looking up the best way to take them on :S
I know there are a few bolt throwers and cannons but I want to try not to get completely annihilated.
Can you outflank your Glade Riders to scare the bejesus out of his artillery? I think that would work really well. Apart from that... make sure you're getting a cover save as often as possible?
Here we go- wood elves vs Dwarves it was a nail biter. The video is also pretty long and done in one take so I imagine you'll be confused more than once in this video. It's all a bit of fun though
Are we going to get to hear about your battle against warriors of chaos in more depth in the near future? Keep up the great work Miss Joey, I always enjoy your quirky videos.
Sorry for video spam I meant to post them on Saturday but had a busy recording day. Also not sure if I missed a vampire spell out of the list here- anyone know?
Butts! I know I recorded that one too must have missed it in the editing- I'll add that in the description!
Glad you like beast though- most of them have gone off without a hitch. Kristen Stewart is bad luck for everyone.
Yes I will definitely do that- also some outtakes of my various costumes I have a chaos warrior battle this evening :S Preparing you for a sad video haha
It may have been a quiet week on the video front but I was pretty busy.
The battle had a better outcome than I expected and it was a good learning experience since we were both beginners.
Love your You Tube channel very awesome and I have Subbed ..... I think.
Am loving the Wood Elves very good work crisp paint job very very awesome just reading over the thread now thought Id jump in and reply just in case I forgot.
Oh you guys beat me if you've seen it- to anyone else following here is battle report 2 from tournament day: Empire.
I really hope it doesn't come across as me not liking the guy- it was more a soul crushing game than it was me annoyed at the player. Youtube comment's have been less than favourable about his list choice but it was fair enough as it was allowed. I didn't really get a feel for the army here more a dated understanding of how lethal steam tanks were but now they have been nerfed a little it seemed like an invalid experience. What do you guys think?
You didn't seem to be negative towards him at all and if he wants to use a powerful list then i don't see why he should take flak for that, it's in the rules so game on i say. Ebay comments sections attract lots of anger and hate so it's best to ignore them if they get messy.
Hi guys- done a few more videos- some tournament ones and the lore of metal and smoky bacon I'll update the archive on the first page. I'm hoping to get drycha soon and create an army around her. Mostly just itching to paint

The face this is stuck on is not your best but made me laugh
I will always come back I just didn't want to post a thousand videos when that was pretty much I'll I've done. Now I have the Drycha model to get on with I'll be back on track with the updates.
Although I have a hen party to attend tomorrow- should be awful.
And I know I know- I take some shocking thumbnails. If you can believe it, that one was the best photos :S
Drycha no.1! I have one more paint up and I want it to look a lot different to this one. I'm kind of annoyed at myself that I managed to paint over the body so many times I ruined some of the detail but she looks alright.
I had an interview earlier this week with Chris Tomlin from TheBlackSun- I'm about halfway through if anyone wants a listen. Just some personal talk and banter
Joey seems to be pretty unresponsive right now, probably due to organising her new kit and what not. I can answer those questions for now to make things easier on her.
Eiríkr wrote:Joey, I noted on one of your videos about 40k Friday. What army hath you chosen?
A Mr Andreas Ott will be making that decision when the fund raiser ends so we will have to wait and see. He paid $200 dollars for the privilege!
Cutthroatcure wrote:Hey girl, how much is the Campaign up to currently?
$1,630 already and still 38 days to go!
Btw Cutt, check out the Mosh Pit, i'm keeping a thread pretty well updated on the campaign for the DCMs.
Hey I'm on a chill out day! And can finially update some stuff on here so be ready for a big post with some videos I also didn't realise there had been any more posts on this thread since my last one so I've not forgotten anyone.
Ok so the new show set up is going to be,
Malifaux Monday- all introduction stuff and teaching how to play and basically running through everything step by step.
Warhammer Wednesday- The normal show about my progression and battle reports and event coverage and Lore videos.
40K Friday. Lots of people have asked that I cover 40k and It'll be much the same set up of Malifaux Monday in that I'll be apporaching it for beginners and where to start.
On the weekends I want to do a good quality comedy news show with input from the viewers and actual information to make it funny and informative
Monday the 21st (tomorrow) will be my first Malifaux Monday so today I am setting up for it.
I've increased the quality of the shows with a HD camera and recently done my first painting tutorial of a wardancer (comedy included ofcourse)
Had lots of requests for the daemon lore of slaanesh so here was my take on it.
The campaign is going well- up to $1640 which means I can do the video coverage of the ETC which I'm unbelievably excited about!!
The video if anyone is interested is here.
So I've been a bit absent guys it's been absolutely mental these past few weeks.
