Probably lost his legs.

To those who care, there are ways to help out vets. If you have some spare cash you can make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, or more recently Wounded Wear which provides clothing to wounded veterans to help them embrace the fact that they are wounded and deserve respect for it. If you have a lot of money and live near a soldier or anybody in the military find out if they need any gear, sometimes they don't get the right equipment from the military.

And no, that last part is not a joke.

Kid's a total fake.
No marksmanship badges or ribbons, belt undressed with that long flappy (uncut) tail showing, NCO stripe on his trousers non NCO rank on his sleeves, those very unshined sketchers, untailored paints, and white gloves.

Its not the first time a US soldier was impersonated.

For those who don't remember the story or don't know the story, Al Qaeda said that they had taken some US Marines hostage and used this photo to show one of them. The "Marine" in question is actually a GI Joe toy.

I spotted this instantly. You can tell by his trousers alone!

They tailor your blues to fit, that bloke looks like snoop doggy dogg!

This literally never happens in England because nobody is impressed or pleasant towards armed forces members.

And the IRA might be on the backburner, but if you walk through Bradford or Blackburn or Luton like this your liable to get stabbed.

I had a Royal Marines sweater on in London and a mob of Muslims started hurling abuse at me. If I hadn't laughed in the biggest ones face, threw some colourful abuse at them and dared him to do something about it it may well have gone awry.

No, and I'm guessing no again. I got it from a veterans group I belong to as a chain email the whole thing looked like this:

Another poser!

GySgt Ableman was keen enough to spot this douche-bag walking through the
Reno Airport in full dress blues with gloves and cover on. He stopped him
near the baggage claim and running into three Drill Instructors wasn't
something this guy had anticipated. If any of you know Gy Ableman, this kid
was lucky to leave with all his teeth intact.

From the get go, it was obvious this kid was not a Marine. He claimed to be
a PFC (wearing LCpl chevrons) and could not explain what a PFC chevron
looked like and then couldn't explain the NCO stripe on his trousers. He had
a collar emblem in the middle of his barracks cover and his belt was
sticking out. No ribbons or badges, his trousers were way too long, not to
mention he had on Sketcher boots instead of dress shoes and a civilian belt.
We found this out after we demanded that he take off the blouse and cover.

Turns out he bought the uniform from a surplus store and his dad is a
retired Navy Chief. Reno is a super-pro military area and this guy was
soaking in the atta-boys. Lot of posers out there, watch out!

Know any recruiters in the San Diego and Reno areas, send them a warning to
watch out for this turd.

I've looked around the interwebz and apparently its pretty old.

Thanks for the story, Auston. Yeah, kid's a douche.

I only asked cause he looks similar to how a lot of the new kids did the first time they had to wear their uniforms in our high school Marine Corps JROTC since they hadn't gotten to know their units yet so no one had taken the time to show them how to do it properly yet.

Wasn't as much a problem for us band members since we had gotten to know each other over the summer at regular band camp(a pre-req for being in the JROTC band was being in the regular band, too).

Having spent a lot of time in airports of all sizes, that was a big mistake. The larger the airport the more service members. You get to national and international level airports and there is almost a 100% chance there is a soldier in there somewhere.

The issue is that the fool was pretending to be something he is not, and attempting to trick other people into giving him public admiration and validation. The complaint is not that he is wearing the clothing, but engaged in an act of deception.

The further criticism is that it is a relatively incompetent one, easily-spotted by any genuine Marine and most anyone else conversant with Marine uniform.

There is a big difference between someone buying some fatigues and playing paintball and someone who goes around in an airport impersonating a Marine Corp member. Pretendng to be an Armed service member, when you're not, is just disgusting.

Woah woah woah. Can't believe my eyes. Have you gone through Parris Island or Camp Pendleton? Have you gone through sixteen weeks of hell to wear that uniform? If the answer is no, you should never even consider buying such an item, unless you're willing to suffer the consequences.

It's not about the clothes, it's about the achievement they represent. The blood, sweat and tears that a marine goes through to earn the right to wear that uniform.

I do draw a line at dress and service uniforms though. I don't think it's the worst thing in the world to wear combat uniforms, as long as you remove all the patches. They're cheap, functional clothing, and they don't necessarily represent the same thing that a dress uniform does. At least that's true of woodland and DCU. Marpat is another matter.

My Hero @ 2012/01/28 00:48:51

Post by: SOFDC

Wah wah wah, theyre wearing my clothes.

That ain't the problem. The problem is in the particulars. For example one can certainly get a pass wearing current issue camo (Stripped. No emblems, patches, rank, etc.) to a hunting party, airsoft, paintball, whatever. A bit of ribbing, but you might want to bring a thick skin around service members at any point...and then give as good as you get.

But if outside of a setting that kinda requires something of the sort (Hi Reenactors!) slapping unit patches on that you were never a part of, ranks you did not earn, medals you did not earn, and insignia you did not serve under is generally a very, VERY bad idea. Wearing these in an effort to get appreciation and respect...well...that's even worse.

You think because someone is wearing your silly little dress blues they deserve to be punched in the face? Try it Jarhead.

Again, no. Not for the wearing. WHERE he is wearing, and for what PURPOSE he is wearing it is what earns him a punch to the face...or being dragged bodily to the nearest USMC recruiter.

This is no different than someone parading around with an olympic gold medal. No one gives a crap that someone has decided to prance about with a pretty ugly and tacky looking necklace. That they didn't earn it, and are making a pretty blatant attempt at taking credit for having done so...That deserves a punch in the face.

Typically, my dress uniforms have always been purchased and altered at the local base "military clothing and sales" shop... It does take me a few hours to polish, align and pin on all the rank, medals and awards that I have *EARNED*, and to see some punk kid doing this to a dress uniform (not of my service, but the point is still the same)

For those of us who have been issued a dress uniform of any type, there is a certain pride that we take whenever we have it on (I hate preparing them, and putting them on, but damn do I look good once everything is on and set). So, for me the issue, is as has been brought up by others. It's not that he is wearing the uniform, its that he's wearing it in an airport. It's because he is pretending to be something much greater than he ever will be, trying to get praise and adulation for something he has never done, and something that I am presuming he will never be. And according to one of the previous posts, this kid's dad was in the Navy for many many years.. which means this kid's dad is a PoS as well, for not teaching him that you just don't do this sort of thing in a PUBLIC PLACE!!

My Hero @ 2012/01/28 09:41:15

Post by: mattyrm

To be fair though, I think even if you are a serviceman wearing your rig in the airport makes you look like a chad fether. It was always a big no-no in the RM. We used to always shower and change before we went anywhere in public as an unwritten rule, and scornfully laugh at the army or navy guys we used to see at gas stations and such in their military rig.

I just dont see why people need to feel "wanted" by strangers anyway, and I have always felt uncomfortable when people threw praise at me just for being a soldier, it was simply a career choice fulled by a base desire to kill people, not an act of selflessness.

My point is, sure this kid is ridiculously pathetic for taking the time to do this and try and take some credit from his betters, but its also pretty sad that some soldiers are such dickless wonders that they feel an urge to walk through public places in their dress rig in the hope that somebody will slap them on the back.

I just think that wearing your rig in public makes you look like you think your a bit of a Charlie big-spuds in general. Be you a fake soldier or otherwise!

The only time I have worn my uni in public, was when I was leaving basic training and going home for "Christmas Exodus" during MOS training. And that was only because we were "forced" to (as in, there were people of rank patrolling the airport, looking for you to be messed up and in the wrong uniform, and they considered you to be on duty, so no drinking, even though we were on leave waiting for our flights home)

At least in the Army here, it is actually written into the regulations that you are not authorized to do ANYTHING outside of work in uniform, yet I don't know how many times I have seen people do this. Basically, if it is after "standard duty hours" the only thing a soldier is authorized to do in uniform, is drive home, get gas at the gas station, or make an "emergency purchase" such as diapers or milk (not full on grocery shop). For instance, when I was at Fort Carson, I would almost always see a new private at the mall at 7 pm, buying clothes, so I'd quietly go up to him and say, "hey dude, you really shouldn't be here in uniform, and if a SGM sees you here, itll be painful for you tomorrow", most often they would respond with "thanks, I just got here and don't have any other clothes here so I was picking some up" But, on one occasion my wife and I saw a Captain in the comic book shop at the mall, and it was an hour to closing... which isn't authorized under any circumstance (because really, what purchase could be constituted as an emergency at a comic shop?)

Yeah, that's always the weird part for me, is seeing cats in their uniforms wandering around just doing whatever. I always tell my friends who didn't join up that that is the fastest way to pick a Nasty Girl or a Reservist from a real soldier (no offense, but I have to bust some chops) because we couldn't wait to put some jeans on and go do something to make us forget we had to do push ups as part of our job. Maybe since I was oconus from AIT on it never came up for me. Maybe it's different for all youse bastards that got stationed in huachuca and had nothing else to do.

@matty There are some times when you have to appear in uniform in public. We used to drive a van from the barracks on Hunter Army Airfield to Fort Stewart almost every day. One time we stopped to help and old couple change a tire, shoulda seen the look on her face when 15 paratroopers appeared out of the van. Another time two guys driving personal vehicles happened on a near fatal car accident and probably saved some womans life. Its become normal to find dudes in field uniforms at airports because of the sheer number of deployed troops on leave. Guys who have been wearing the same socks and drawer for three days in Kuwait and a 20 some hour flight over. To see some slow in a dress uniform just pings the "something not right" radar. But yes normally you change out of uniform as quickly as possible and if you don't or wear your old uniform trousers cut into shorts with your uniform brown t shirt with your humorously overweight wife, I have now identified you as Ted. A typical enlisted dude.
@Ensis That seems to be my experience too, although most guys use more descretion. Played a game against a guy at the game store on the weekend, good sport great game, we had a good time. Come Monday I'm escorting a group of officers from Fort Stewart around our compound to see a launch and landing and to my suprise a young MP captain is among them, same dude. I don't think either one of use mentioned the Army once in a 2 hour game, you know the way it's supposed to be.

Sorry, I had difficulty reading that, Ill just go and smash my face into a wall for a minute and come back in semi-literate mode.

......

Ok where were we..

British people have always been far more reserved when it comes to their treatment of the armed forces, I pointed this out because It is absolutely true, as I have been based in both the US and the UK and found the Americans to be far more open and vocal with their support to their miltary personel (believed to be fuelled by the shameful way that Vietnam veterans were treated bac in the 70s.) and regardless I dont see why you would take my comment so badly. The actual full on disrespect I was talking about was from IRA sypathisers and devout Muslims who view our last two wars as acts of agression, not the average member of the British public.

Also, I respect your families service, but what has that got to do with you? You didnt do anything. I on the other hand went to Iraq twice, and Afghanistan twice, and Northern Ireland, and Sierra Leone. (and I even went to Scotland) agree or disagree, I have earned the right to express my opinion. No need to get your knickers in a twist.

Oh and while im on, tell your dad the paratroopers are all wimps, in first gulf war he will have been so far back in the rear he has to send his laundry forwards, and if his son keeps setting his lip up he is going to get chinned by a green beret who is ten times harder, ten times faster and ten times better looking.

I apologise greatly for this. i did not realise that you were English mattyrm as my computer was showing a US flag on your nationalitie.
I have a great respect for the armed forces of Her Majesty and i cannot stand it when someone appears to be trying to get at them and when i saw that you were saying that no one has any respect for them in England a sort of cold fury took over me. I hope we can forget this incident as i do not wish to become the enemy of one of our Soldiers

Hey don't worry about it, ive been called much worse, and I still havent started an "enemies" list.

As I said, your entitled to your opinion and I respect your passion, Ive clearly got no issues with anyone who is pro-military, I just dont like to appear ridiculously pro-military myself to the point where I appear to think that coalition troops can do any wrong, because I think if you act like that your as bad as those filthy hippies with their own unflinching devotion to their pinko doctrine.

Typically, my dress uniforms have always been purchased and altered at the local base "military clothing and sales" shop...

There's plenty of people that order their stuff online to get a discount. I don't have sales figures, but I know several of them personally and I don't imagine that they are the only people that do so.

Its, AFAIK, a PR thing. If someone is doing something stupid, the military would rather that person not be in uniform, it is also there so that people are "forced" to go home and change before going and doing something else... I never understood why someone would want to go to a mall, or grocery store, or restaurant, or anywhere else in uniform unless they absolutely had to.

I know its not just me, but when I get home, my uniform is the first thing that comes off... i cant wait to get home to get into normal clothes again, and I definitely make sure that nothing really goes on until I am comfortable.

Seriously as well.. 99.9% of getting laid is what you look like and what you say. If you struggle to get a shag out of uniform, your going to struggle in one.

It's true though, there are some chicks with baggage near camps. I was at 40 commando in Taunton once and my company was just back from a short deployment so I was pretty hairy and beardy and not very military looking (other than my mighty guns obviously) I was stood across from the bar when I caught this student birds eye, who smiled broadly at me and then batted her lashes with those sorta "feth me eyes" that chicks have when they fancy you, I remember it well because we both smiled at each other and she was wearing a gak backback with Elmo from Sesame street on the back. When I glanced over a minute later she caught my eye again and then sorta, "waved" the arm on the Elmo thing at me.

So 100% confident thanks to the feth me eyes I sauntered over and said "Hello there, do you want to go somewhere a bit quieter and have a drink with me?" and as soon as she heard my broad northern accent she instantly went from feth me eyes to feth you eyes and said "Are you a Marine?" and I said "I am yes, ive just returned from a deployment" and she went "YOU fething LOSER!"

And stomped away with a sob.

I was left thinking "was that the bird I wrote a letter to when we were in Norway and Yozzer asked me to tell her he died in an avalanche?"
