February release of Fantasy Tower "Deathknell Watch" (with pic) @ 2012/01/25 10:45:59

Post by: Kroothawk

Some news by Romanus over at Warseer:
Can confim no Necrons or Nid next month, however there is the release of the Necron and Vampire Counts Battalion Box sets along with something called the Deathknell watch for fantasy, other then that some interesting Black Library releases and some 40k combo kits (Tac Squad and Drop Pod etc) for 40k, all the rest is unfortunatley LOTR.

Cheers,
Rom

Deathknell seems to be the rumoured new Fantasy Fortress:
Eldargal wrote:There has been a new fortress kit ready for some time, apparently. I've heard of its existence from a couple of sources but nothing about an imminent release. There is a lot of terrain ready to go into production that hasn't been released, apparently.

Harry wrote:I heard there was a new much more warhammery 'Mighty fortress' coming... heard that over a year ago .... then heard it was done. Then didn't hear anything else about it.

Not sure skullvane Manse wouldn't be described as a much more Warhammery fortress?
(So have wondered if that was it?)

I heard they would be making more individual pieces rather than one generic fortress.

So maybe Skullvane is the first of a number of similar pieces?

But then again you cant play a proper siege game with Skullvane Manse. (Cool though it is.)

I heard that the Blood in the Badlands was released earlier than expected and that it originally had another scenery kit planned for release with it.

I heard that it was originally planned for March next year (2012)
I heard that is when the next scenery is still being released.

I heard a name for this scenery (from a top quality source of fine rumours and an all round good chap ) ...
... it sounds like a 'fort' to me.
Or at the very least a Watchtower of some kind ..... maybe with a bell ?

Maybe that's why the Skullvane Tower has a bridge leading nowhere: Combines with this kit. Just a guess though.
MOMUS wrote:Probably havent released the fortress due to IP issues with castle grayskull. Probably.

Combo-Kits?
Curious ... I was just recently talking to some GW-staffers about that. They said they dont see those coming back in the near-future. I wouldnt mind seeing some cool ones though ...

One point someone on Warseer raised was that these peices might all fit into one huge terrain peice. Like, the Skullvane tower has a walkway to nowhere. Which might 'plug into' the Fortress, the Garden of Morr might fit inside it, etc.

Okay, had a look at the WD. The Deathknell Watch is another skull tower, this time basically the upper part of the Skullvane Tower.
Not exactly what i hoped for.

Not terribly exciting, but I like the screaming skull portal thing on the roof. I wish there was some more generic terrain like the Temple of Skulls which could be used in both games, but this tower looks alright.

Now we have the following Warhammer Fantasy terrain:

Skull Watchtower
Skull Manor House with Skull Watchtower
Skull Sorcery Tower
Ruined Skull Sorcery Tower
Skull Tower Observatory
now new Skull Watchtower

plus
Skull chapel
Skull temple
Skull temple ruins
Skull Throne and Skull Vortex
Skull Stairs and Skull Portal
Garden of Skulls
Walls and Fences of Skulls
Forest of Skulls
Realm of Skulls
Realm of Skulls Extension (with more skulls)
Warhammer Fortress (soon to be discontinued, no skulls!)

And all I wanted was a High Elven tower

Actually, the "bronze guardian" is a signalling device. The army occupying the tower is allowed to reroll the scatter dice 8only this dice, not the d6 or artillery dice), enemy scouts can't be started within 24" then. There are some other nice rules for the tower.

The skull well is on the bottom floor. Can be used separately if you don't glue the tower to the floor.

I love GW terrain. I think it's fantastic and I own heaps of it - more than heaps of it, too much of it really. I even like some of the really stupid ones.

But...

Uhh...

Jesus that's horrible. And lazy. The Skullknell Skullwatch Skulltower. Feth me this is getting stupid... does it even link up to the Skullvane Skullmanse?

GW seems to always release the same total volume of things for any one of their games in any given year. In years like this 40K year, its like any other, delayed gratification with release for any one game just more tightly clustered and larger periods of nothing new.

GW rejected my concept for a terrain piece, they said there weren't enough spikes:

Don't play WHFB, but concurring with everyone else - the skull fixation is just getting even more ridiculous as time goes on. I find it so hard to believe that every tower on the WHFB planet has enormous skulls built in. Even their semaphore system is skull-based.

I am very disappointed by the lack of skulls on this one. And I wish they would come out with a sprue to chaos our fantasy buildings with spikes and more skulls!

All kidding aside, I hate the GW design philosophy of "More SKULLS!" Its like the SNL cowbell skit, just substitute cowbell with skulls. As mentioned earlier, how about some elven towers? Or a dwarven piece? Anything, but yet another skull laden, uninspiring empire piece. How about a lizardman temple? Please?

I can't wait for the new castle walls and keep that come mounted on a skull so big they have to make a special skull laden realms addition to fit it. That will be skulliscious!

What bugs me about the terrain is that so many of them are just towers. The graveyard was a cool set, but how many towers do we really need? In the least GW could have come up with actual themes for the different towers... like have different ones themed to a couple of different races. Or even a set designed to interconnect to build a fortress.

February release of Fantasy Tower "Deathknell Watch" (with pic) @ 2012/01/25 16:50:59

Dear GW.

If reading this, please produce Lizardmen scenery.

I would give you all my monies. For life.

As much as I appreciate fantasy scenery, the skulls are a bit OTT on everything as of late. What happened to things like the chapel? Where there were no skulls! Why can't we have some generic, non-Empire, non-skull bits? Surely every battle isn't in the Empire....hell, even the starter box isn't set there. I can't see half this scenery being remotely useful or thematic with the IoB armies...which is a shame because Game + Scenery is a logical step for a buyer.

That is one bad piece of terrain.

What really annoys me is that GW claims that they have a very limited ability to produce plastic models because they only have a few plastic injection machines and the molds are very costly to produce. Then they produce stuff like skulltower. I think in reality they just want to get you to spend money on aspects of the hobby other than miniatures. I hope that they find that people will not buy this junk.

Also I have heard BS excuses about the prices of plastic figures being high because plastic is an oil based product and is thus expensive. We can see this is blatantly false as there is an enormous amount of plastic in kits like the tower and the price is not much more than a box of 10 troops.

Did anyone get the Skullvane thingy btw, where the skulls moulded on, or did you place them?

Just wondering as some of their other terrain required such 3-d pieces to be glued on. Although that was older stuff from a while back.

As to this thing, well its a tower. I could use it for Mordheim, but I'd not rush to buy one.

DSS, there is a simple reason why GW will never produce Lizardmen scenery (as much as I would like to see it as well) - there's not enough potential for SKULLZ.

Seriously, sometimes I think, "If I could only become the world's foremost sculptor of miniature skulls, then GW would have no choice but to hire me."

Doesn't everyone adorn their towers with the skulls of slain giants? And if you have slain no giants, carve some skulls out of solid stone so you look intimidating.

Wouldn't you all rage if you found out that Matt Ward was responsible for all the skulls! It's almost too funny to be wrong.

I'll stick with Hirst Arts molds. Infinite customization, a proper realistic look, and a lifetimes worth of hobby to do.

Actually, that's the intention. Accorfding to the rules included in WD, there is a secret arcane book called "The Semaphorium" in the tower that is basically an illustrated manual for submitting signals with the skeleton.

Less skulls would have been nice. To answer an earlier post, the skulls are molded into Skullvane Manse. The only optional parts are the tower top/observatory and some maltese cross shaped wall plates.
I wonder if it ends here or if there is more to come? The new tower does fit to Skullvane making a bigger structure which goes together well.

like many here I hate 'terrain of skulls' with the exception of Garden of Morr, as skulls belong in graveyards.

However no critique on this occassion. The skull tower already exists its just one extra sprue with a base and top to change it into something else. This to me is just being efficient with what you have got.

However I do hope this is the last new skull infest project. Please GW, do something else.

Skeleton on the roof is too much. It's an awful piece of terrain as it is, but the skeleton is just too ridiculous.

What are they thinking with all these useless towers and bulk pieces? Sure, cover is great, but I can use piled up text books if that's all I need. Ruins are what I imagine to be a common sight on the battlefield, and they're much harder to make.

Agreed! GW is really better off with customers not buying something because they are waiting for a rumored product. Once that rumor turns out to be false, they wont ... well buy anything at all?! Awesome!

By the way, that tower would be awesome, if it were not for the skulls on the side. The brickwork is actually pretty nice looking ....

But why'd they package an obviously Empire tower with it? Wouldn't it have made more sense to bundle some TK-themed terrain with the giant's body? What are TK players going to do with Empire kit?

And all I wanted was a High Elven tower

Well that get's another from me.

A deeply cynical release. I'm minded of the Malibu Stacey episode of the Simpsons - "It's Malibu Stacey... but with a new hat!

If GW really wanted to push skulls it would not have been hard to make something cool. I think a giant ziggurat made entirely of small skulls would look really cool.

I like those too, but the throne needs someone sitting in it, the Liche King from Warhammer Quest would be ideal, if you can find one.

I actually have that Liche King. Hmm... not a bad idea. Thanks!

That is one of the Imperiums Technicus miniatures, seems currently unavailable.

Looks pretty cool(if a little generic) if you take out the big skulls, the silly thing on top, and maybe the wrap-around stairs on the outside.

Its the old Imperial Engineer, he's still available as a normal purchase, just not finecast so need to get him direct from GW.

Is the "I really LOVE skullz" market really bigger than the "I really HATE skullz" market? Because surely the middle market of "I like detailed scenery!" is not going to mind the lack of skulls. Maybe GW market research leads them to believe that items with skulls on them sell better?
Baffling.

And in an era when GW seems dedicated to the concept of multi-option kits it doesn't seem too much to ask for the skulls to be optional as well.

If they were smart the giant skulls would be optional. That would be pure win-win. Extra skulls for skull mad converters, more or less realistic castles for the rest of us.

I think someone hit the nail on the head with a comment earlier...

They know other companies make realistic scenery, and very well. So their options are:

1) Make scenery that takes their IP and design to the extreme

2) Try to compete with other the multitude of other scenery companies.

Love it or hate it, at least their stuff stands out.

I dont know, as someone has said, it looks great if you remove the skulls the signalstatue the stairs the walls the tower and the interior.

You are left with a nice engineer model

Skull Throne and Skull Vortex
Skull Stairs and Skull Portal
Garden of Skulls
Walls and Fences of Skulls
Forest of Skulls
Realm of Skulls
Realm of Skulls Extension (with more skulls)
Warhammer Fortress (soon to be discontinued, no skulls!)

And all I wanted was a High Elven tower

Darn it GW! Where is my castle of skulls!

The kit strikes me as a very unimaginitave copy of the last three skull towers that they have launched. There are all kinds of cool WFB sets they could come up with. I would love to see some lizard men stuff or maybe some dwarf or skaven terrain, not impressed...

Usually I think your way over the top but that really just about sums it up. Only could be better if they fit two or three more giant skulls on it. I mean can GW release any terrain with less than five giant skulls on it these days?

The Arcane Ruins have an extra skulls sprue. That would have been nice here.
The Fences and Walls set is skull-free.
I dont mind Empire buildings but I would like to see some more generalised houses/shops. Enough with the skulls already.

This terrain inspires me to like their older range of scenery simply out of spite for the new stuff.

Honestly without the two-inch skulls on the side of that watchtower I would buy it as generic terrain but unfortunately GW feel the need to watermark every new piece of terrain that comes out with massive bloody skulls. That is all the skulls are: watermarks.

Yep. I bought the Skullvane Manse thinking I could probably just sand down or cover up most of the skulls and have an interesting terrain piece that was a bit different. I knew it would be a fair bit of work... But as soon as I opened up the box and saw just how much surface area the skulls covered, and how they were just effin everywhere, even more than I had seen in photos. Well, it's still in the box.

Now seeing this tower made up of recycled parts has confirmed my feeling that I won't be getting anymore GW terrain unless there's a major change in their design department.

Guys, you got it all wrong. All that is on the tower is needed. Skulls on the side to say "THIS IS GAMES WORKSHOP!!!!!" and the skeleton on top is the most important part. They want fantasy to have more flying monsters and to help you in the confusion of where to route them to this is the fantasy air traffic control .

Yep next wfb army book "warhammer armies: towers with loads of skulls on" I'm guessing this new tower would be one of the core choices?

Having looked at it over and over again it isn't that bad, it's just enough with the skulls already!

Also a question to GW designers:- do all other warhammer races live out in the open with nothing more than a newspaper over their heads? Also does everyone in the empire live in some kind of skull infested tower? If so do regular houses appear creepy to the tower dwellers???

The waving skeleton at the top is more than ridiculous. Who the hell thought that would be a good idea? Marketing should be summarily executed by an Orc Big'Un.

Small update by Harry:
Harry wrote:Well lets have a look at what I said .....

Well this piece IS fairly similar you have to admit.

I am not sure what to expect.
As I said Skullvane could easily be the more 'Warhammery fortress' I heard about.
I heard about it at roughly the same time as the grave far which we have seen.

As far as I know there are no plans to replace the current "Mighty Fortress".

But I am still expecting some more scenery.
