Hi guys,
So a couple of months ago I decided to take a plunge and buy a few materials, tools and start having a go at modelling. I started way back when I was 11 but I gave it up around age 14. I am now 23 and I have a lot more patience than I ever did back then, so I thought I'd get back into it as a hobby.
I kicked started that with a diorama.
I am pretty pleased with the results, but I'll let you guys be the judge.
If you want to see more pictures or a "making of" please see my blog at: http://www.gearboxfilms.co.uk/rustyrobot
For those that have PM'ed asking, I have now put up a "Subscribe" button on my blog at the bottom. Thanks!
Thanks!

I'm pleased with your results! This is a stunning piece with lots of atmosphere.
I like the use of the more proportioned marine. The pulse rifle looks like it could be a standard weapon for sentinel pilots if all goes horribly wrong.
I'm particularly fond of this shot from your blog.
Very nice.

Very nice. I'd almost be tempted to say you've not used the space, but the fact it *is* empty really gives it a desolate, slightly chilling feel. Excellent composition.

Thank you so much. Your comments are awesome. I spent a great deal of time trying to find a pilot that would suit and, like you, fell in love with the gun and it's connotations. Your thought of "if it all goes horribly wrong" is exactly what I thought too.
Xenocidal Maniac wrote:WOW. Looks great. Very gritty.
It came out a little grittier than I originally planned in my mind's eye, but I like that fact it did. Glad you do too. Thanks!

Really chuffed you got this. I read Stutcinkas' Forgeworld "Model Masterclass Vol 1" a lot. He mentions to never have dead space in a diorama, that at every part should be something pleasing to the eye so I was a little... anxious, if you like... if I could convincingly use the dead space in the exact way you perceived it. So, thanks. Mission accomplished!

I spent a long time on the weathering, it really pulled the whole piece together. Thanks for your awesome comments. The model is from Hasslefree Miniatures, an independant company here in the UK. It's called "Ken (C)" - the "C" part being the version. It really is a great model - a great company too.

I love that , thanks. I considered for a while about the scope of the piece. I wanted to make it grand, but I don't have a lot of experience so I didn't want to punch above my weight. I made a aesthetic compromise, but this makes me happy that said compromise was successful.

I kind of reminds me of the stories you'd hear about Vietnam and the soldiers having to go into these tunnel systems to try and extricate the North Vietnamese hidden within. Apparently it was horrific duty... crawling through the pitch blackness never knowing if the next step would be in to a booby-trap or an enemy soldier's sights...

Absolutely. I'm still to watch the Uwe Boll film about that. Tunnel Rats, if I recall.

I didn't see it. I will have to hunt it down. Yeah, it kinda is a juxtaposition of the two settings. I was concerned about the mud when I was planning, but it came out well.

Thanks for the props octavus. I played the with idea of putting something in the dark, but there was something a lot more ominous about having a wide opening... almost an invitation.
The scratches were really easy to do. Simply a careful small application of Charadon Granite followed by a slightly heavier application of Boltgun Metal, all by sponge.

You've got a great eye for dioramas. Normally, I'm supremely picky when it comes to dioramas. This one seems like it's actually catches a moment from a cohesive story, rather than just looking like a couple of soldiers posing for a picture. Really, really good job. They should use this as one of the pictures to teach people what dioramas should ACTUALLY look like.

Rogue Wolves wrote:fantastic work, highly filled with character, its AWSOME!
Thanks man, as I said previously I think the whole "less is more" approach seems to work in dioramas sometimes too.
Chapter_Master_Vlad wrote:I don't know if anyone asked this already, but what did you use for the mud? I'm really curious.
You are the first to ask. I made it by first mixing a DIY filler into a smooth creamy texture. I added a brown acrylic to the mix in case any filler chipped off over time. It was spread on the base and it has self-levelling properties so it all smoothed out to one big blog. Which is okay to start. At this very wet stage a dry mix consisting of filler, sand and ballast was generously sprinkled all over, creating a surface texture. I let it all dry a bit, making the filler much easier to sculpt and "churn" into more of a mud. Any big holes exposing the filler were lightly filled by a bit more dry mix and details (barrels, wheels etc) were pushed in. After everything dried solid over night it was undercoated black. Layers of Graveyard Earth, Scorched Brown and Desert Yellow were airbrushed on for natural tones. Using "Woodland Scenics Realistic Water" and a brown acrylic I made the water mix. This water was to be used on the tank tracks as it is a very deep brown. Once dry it looks like real water. The puddles were made in the exact same way, just with a much lighter shade of brown - to simulate that rain has just settled and mixed with the surface mud. Layering is the key. If you want to find out more visit my blog, detailing the making of: http://www.gearboxfilms.co.uk/rustyrobot

Excellent to hear man. By trade I am a fiction filmmaker, so it's nice to know the atmosphere comes through here. That was of the upmost importance.

I often found that too, orkork. I heavily researched previous dioramas for tips and ideas, but I was kinda shocked to find most of them were just gaming boards really - some with a printed 2D base! I'm not damning anyone's work, but it just wasn't what I knew as a diorama. Glad you dig it! Oh, photography... absolutely. Photography has to acutely display the details you've worked so hard on, right? I mean, if it is to live on online forums like this one, it has to be in focus! Or else all your hard work will be in vain. Thanks for the commenting.

Love the feel. There are two things that kind of break the illusion for me though; the grossly oversized barbed wire and the lower and right edge of the ground, where it becomes some sort of fabric. I don't know what it's supposed to be but it kind of looks like the entire scene is playing out on a giant tarp or something.
So; love the atmosphere, but stay precise in the details.

Interesting notes. The barbed wire is oversized. It's a detail that I myself would improve on could I make it again. I'm not quite sure what you are referring to when you say "fabric" but I can only assume you are pointing to the folds near the edge of the base? That's the filler that didn't get coated with the dry mix. It's my first diorama so it's only going to get better from here. Thanks for your comments.

Great atmosphere and weathering! Really cool vibe going on here. My only advice would be that the uniform color and glossiness of the ground indicates heavy rain to me, in which cae I am missing some deep puddles in the recesses. If it isn't meant to look like rain, then I think the ground could do with a bit more color variety and some matte patches as well-
Still, compared to what you have achieved, a small criticism!

It certainly is rain. Although, I wanted it to be like it had rained rather than it is raining. The pictures don't quite do it justice with how wet everything is, if you see my blog @ http://www.gearboxfilms.co.uk/rustyrobot there are a few more pictures detailing the wet ground. Thanks for your comments!

I'm still considering a few ideas. I've had a few thoughts, but like this one, I don't want to rush into anything. It's all too easy to get high off the response I've had here and just start making another. I need this next one to live up to the quality of this one. I need it to be a better diorama than "Lost".
I am ready to start building, itching even, but I need that eureka idea first.

How about you do a duel for the Dakka Painting challenge? You would definately do really good!
Maybe something like this: http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_lxppnxzMKp1qghk7bo1_1280.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ6IHWSU3BX3X7X3Q&Expires=1328561451&Signature=2c3ng2kdBq6lPWzP%2BZonZ9qLeEI%3D
or: a wild west style duel
or: http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2008/07/18/terminator-salvation-bale.jpg
or even an air duel between a thunderbolt/ lightning and a hell blade
or a chaos contemptor vs a normal one
maybe even a tank versus a demolitions squad

Interesting. I like the idea of a duel. I definitely want to keep the concept small - like in "Lost", but the scope and action slightly more... grand. Thanks for the ideas.

Thanks for your awesome comment. I spent more time on the weathering process than the painting, so to speak. Even though these particular models are very dirty, I don't think I could ever paint something and not weather it. Glad you like it!

Incredibly evocative. You can almost hear the quiet, and his boots squelching in the mud, and the sound of his breathing. I've never seen a diorama that pulls me in so much. You just want him to be back in the warm seat of his sentinel, motor chugging away, getting far away from whatever's about to happen.
It doesn't hurt that it's photographed so beautifully. The full sequence of pictures on your blog is practically a tiny movie in itself.

It's at 99% right now. Add some pooled water and it will be absolutely insane. Good diorama pieces have their own narrative, and this one seems extensive. I also like that there's no real clues toward what the danger is, no crazy tyranid claw marks or " chaos wuz here" graffiti. Maybe the IG that were deployed here were silenced by the Inquisition for something they've seen, and there's a Paladin in there waiting to force weapon this poor guy to death. Just solid work.

Absolutely. I'm over-the-moon that people have recognised that fact, I really am.
Today I, finally, decided on the idea for my next diorama. Whilst I am in love with the idea of "ominous feeling on the unknown" - and I toyed for a while to do it again - I will be trying something different in my next diorama. I have already titled it "Recovery". Keep an eye on my blog for more.
p.s. I may make "Lost" as a trilogy. The "ominous-unknown trilogy".

What else is there to be said for a diorama like this. It captures a mood and the subject instantly.
You look at this guy and you know he's alone and scared. It's great that it's clear there is a dugout under there, just as a fuel station at the minimum, I love the exchange tower on the other side of the fence, but the rain soaked mucky ground, the single character, the M41-A Pulse Rifle, all tell us this has gone from bad to worse and he's still ten steps from the door. Perfectly done.
The "dead space" is what gives this diorama character. If it was filled with hints as to what the enemy might be, or littered with corpses and signs of battle would have ruined it. This leaves you with the question of...Is this guy really alone? What's out there waiting in the dark? And will he ever get back in that Sentinel of his ever again.

A few people have said that actually. Whilst I dig the reference - I love Fallout 3 - I can't help but think... "oh really?". Purely because Fallout has such a dry landscape... Nevertheless, I can see other areas that people draw such correlations. Thanks man, I appreciate it!

I'd like to add that the pictures are really, really well done. They add quite a bit to the over-all effect, hats off to your photo skills.
The placing is really a cut above also, very evocative posing and use of space. For me, it's the roll-cage being left in the "up" position. It's like when a character leaves a car door open in a suspense movie, he's so fixated on what caused him to get out that he forgot a simple thing like shutting the door.
Lastly, the modeling is above the fold. Good color choices, I love how everything is in the same palette, without getting to dreary or bland. the scratch-built elements really fit not only with the piece itself, but also within the 40k realm.
This was a joy to look at, what a real and unexpected nice piece.

Wow... your review is fantastic - I'm touched. Thank you for your kind words. I'm thrilled you appreciate the "roll-cage" detail. I tried to take it a step further by having the door open too, but my cutting skills just aren't up to the task yet. Fortunately my greenstuff skills are adequate enough to hide the damage caused by said effort.

The way I like to interpret it, is that the abandoned bunker he's found himself at is all to familiar. Maybe it used to be an outpost along his patrol route, which has suddenly been evicted, for some unknown reason. And of the course, the pilot has no idea, so when he rocks up to the bunker, expecting to be greeted, and get to have a quick Iho stick and a cheeky slash, he instead finds it eerily quiet.
My interpretation anyway. I really like the piece, it's very atmospheric, and it seems to have so much more impact than a crowded firefight scene.

My interpretation anyway. I really like the piece, it's very atmospheric, and it seems to have so much more impact than a crowded firefight scene.
Great interpretation. One that rings very true. Thanks for your comments ghosty. Most appreciated.

Ahhh! Keep an eye on the blog, I'll be putting more details up there soon. Here's a tease though: it's a Death Korp diorama.

Simple, yet complicated. I like the the "possibility" fo what might happen to the figure. Nicely done.

Awesome, I love that. I guess you could say my next one is less complicated but not so simple.

The base was built purposefully for this. From a large sheet of MDF I cut out a 30cm diameter circle. I then routed the edge to give it a profile. It's definitely bigger than any GW base.

I love it. You really nailed it with setting the mood with the colors. All the open space really reinforces the 'lost' part of the diorama. the weathering is awesome too. Any oil filtering used at all?

Possibly. This one is going be a lot more dry than "Lost". Well, it's not going to feel like it's raining anyway.

I came here from an offsite link and logged in to say how much that diorama owns. The weathering on that sentinel is absolutely top notch, superb work. That mud pooled around the fence looks real.
How'd you paint the wood, by the way?

Wicked. Appreciate that. Say, where did you see this posted off site?
The wood was painted in layers. Sprayed black first. Then several thin layers of brown and black ink (mixed with Klear). Finished with a pure mix of Klear for that wet look.

Very nice and engaging diorama. The title Lost seems to indicate the Pilot has make a wrong turn somewhere. Its really an inspiration. Makes me wanna work on my own.
Here's my version about what happen...
The Sentinel churn aimlessly forward for the past 1 hour, leaving deep footprints onto the muddy terrain. Prolonged wars and acid rain had long transformed the once scenic countryside into a barren and unforgiven landscape.
The pilot cursed at the faulty auspex for the tenth time, his anxiety increases by the red blicking light on top of the fuel gauge. Scanning the horizon, his fears eased when he spotted the silhouette of an imperial bunker.
The Sentinel, which has been now running on fumes for the past ten minutes, stopped a short distance before the bunker. Relief to have found help, he lifted the metal cage of the Sentinel and jumped onto the soft muddy ground.
As he walks towards the entrance, the pilot sense something is not quite right. The bunker appeared unoccupied and he observed hurried footprints exiting the place.
He shouldered his lasgun and cautiously approach the entrance, desperate for help but unsure what lies ahead in the darkness.

Thanks guys! Great to see there is still interest in this! Had so much fun making it.
I got about half way done with the new diorama before other stuff in my life took over. I am knee deep in a new film I am making, so getting the time to do "Recovery" is... challenging. Nevertheless, there is enough of the project done to warrant finishing it. Just a matter of when.

I usually like to see a clearer focal point, but you've made amazing use of empty space to emphasize loneliness and desolation. Since nothing competes visually with the soldier, he still stands out beautifully.
Fantastic work.
