So I figured we have a thread about terrible ebay auctions already, why not one on awesome deals that people have gotten.

A few days ago I won http://www.ebay.com/itm/120872637603?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 for a whopping $30 shipped. The cauldron alone is listed elsewhere for $50 so once I resell the dark riders I'll have arguably one of the cheapest Cauldrons around!

So what great deals have you gotten of Ebay or even a trade site like the Swap Shop or bartertown?

I got a ton of stuff from a boot sale once (Don't know what you call boot sales in the US). Was a girl there selling her boyfriends stuff after a break up. Got about 200 quids worth for a couple of pounds. Puts ebay to shame.

I think we call them garage or yard sales(a sale at your home on the driveway or lawn).

I only wish I could make such a find like that. It might help if I actually went to yard sales ever lol.

Two limited edition marines for ~$15 each, both not fully labeled, both usually go for ~$65 each, used. One of mine was even still NIB.

I managed to get the Ltd Emperor's Champion (the one with the double-handed grip rather than holding his blade above his head) for about £12 on eBay once.

I just got him on bartertown for $5 last month. I've actually been seeing his price drop rapidly lately.

I obviously fail at searching eBay for great deals... everything I find is bid up enormously - sometimes over retail.

Paying $3-3.50 per genestealer is insane. Paying $100 for a painted Carnifex is equally insane - I don't care how good the paint job is.

Try to find auctions that end in the middle of a working week. Not so many people around to bid.

My best find was two sealed boxes of Necron Warriors and a sealed Ghost Ark box. Paid for £41 + £7 postage. A massive saving of £24 And yes, that was a mid week auction.

I picked up an all lead dwarf army, probably 1000-1500poimts in 3rd edition (only edition I really had any grasp of) for £55 + p&p; so about £65.

It included all of the White dwarfs to that point, Felix and Gotrec, the Dwarf lords of legend box minis, the original slotta Bugmans Rangers, Prince Ulthers Dragon company and a few other units of mostly Imperial and Maruder dwarfs, plus a few cannons and an organ gun...oh and gyrocopter....and about a dozen slayers.

Even if I sold it all for a £1 a dwarf I would still see a massive return (I will never sell this horde though )

I think it was one of those listed as dwarfs/dwarves type situations. Not allot of competition just me and some other berks who couldnt get the spelling right!

I once found the elusive and hard to find Imperial Command Post, one of GW's old card-and-bulkhead terrain pieces that was out during 2nd Ed. Was right there at the end of the auction... and got distracted and missed the end.

Although in later years I did manage to get Gideon Lorr, and the Necron Army box years after it came out, including the Ltd. Ed. Necron Lord.

It's the nature of the hobby (and indeed hobbyists) really, where people often impulse buy and then realise they haven't really got the time or inclination to finish a project or even open the box in the first place.

I often find myself selling stuff on in this regard and I find that it holds its value quite well... which is why I'm always amazed that I can pick some stuff up really cheap.

If you always miss auctions then I suggest this service:
http://www.justsnipe.com/

May as well use an auction sniper. Everyone else does. Some sellers complain about sniping software. I do far more selling than I do buying, and I don't mind it one bit.

The one thing people may be hesitant about is, you have to enter your ebay user ID and ebay password. I have never had an issue and have been using the software for the last 8-9 months or so. I had even had a pay subscription at one point but didnt use it enough to justify the 5 dollars a month.

I don't use ebay enough to want to pay a subscription to something like that. Even if I did I probably wouldn't want the risk of my account getting hacked.

I just won an old Skaven Doomwheel for $9.50 shipped. It's painted/assembled and one of the wheels is broken off, but nothing some simple green and glue won't take care of. I'll have to see what condition it's in when it gets here, but it looked pretty decent.

Another time, I got a zombie dragon missing two limbs for $9 shipped. I'm not sure if I should count that as a win or not. They neglected to mention that it was a zombie dragon, and said it was only missing one limb. That was the only time I've left a non-positive review.

Still a decent deal, just not the deal I thought I was getting. One of these days I'll do something cool with him.

I don't bother with sniping programs. I see an item I want and I determine how much I'll pay for it, shipped. I then place a bid for the total mount, sans shipping costs.
If I win, then I win. If I don't, then oh, well.

By sniping you can keep your prices lower. If you enter your max bid you may get 5 more bids on top trying to determine your top price. If you never enter that bid to begin with, then there's not a top bid to go against. The snipe program will still do all of that. It just waits until the end of the auction.

The big difference may be that I usually only bid on large lots. The less bids that lot gets, the better chance you have of saving a lot of money. The last thing you want, is to put in your top bid with 5 days to go. You can end up starting a bidding war that way. People will start bidding it up to see what your max bid is. People like leading the auction. I guess it's just human tendencies.

I use a snipe program because it's convenient, and it saves me money. But to each his own. As someone who sells a lot on ebay, I like bidders who enter their top bid days away from auction end.

It was $200. Fortunately there was another auction that had about the same amount of thousand sons, 14x terminators, 1x daemon prince, and 4x rhinos that was ending an hour after the one I bid on. So no one was paying attention or interested in the auction that I bid on.

I've not really got an awesome Ebay story of my own. But when I first got into the hobby one of my friends got really excited because he had found 10 leman russes for £20 (this isn't awesome, but appeared to be to my friend). It is not just you that buys them, and you are correct, you can get some screaming deals on the Dredd minis, seems like no one is interested. I grabbed a dozen JD models, including the bike for about 8 GBP, after shipping cost me something in the range of 15 CAD.

That's the same reason my buddies use it. Me, though? I'm not so worried about it. I don't really bid on anything so large that the difference between my best price and opening price are so different that it makes much difference. Anything large, and I'm only looking @ BiN's, anyway.

I picked up most of my original Sisters of Battle because of a great ebay deal...

Case + vehicles + tons of pewter mines + shipping... about 1500-2000pts of Sisters (during the Witch Hunter era) for $150 total...

I've seen a similar deal actually sell for around 500 recently...

Hmm, I got a bunch of BNIB trolls for 40% (the metal, normal trolls).

Picked up a brand new Dwarf Lord (with pistol) for ~58% off.

I snagged Grombrindal, the White Dwarf (the 2009 WD subscription model) for ~$13. (this one was used though, I had to strip primer off him). He was listed as OOP Dwarf lord/hero.

** Those are the most recent ones at least.

Some of the older ones include:
Getting the SM half of AoBR for ~$17
Getting the WD Sub model Night Goblin boss for like ~$6
Getting Skarsnik & Gobbla (the current one) for like $20.
Snagging Gideon Lorr (the LE Inquisitor) for ~$23.

Basically, buying stuff on Ebay - I go for 25% off as the baseline for new stuff (since that's about what you can get it elsewhere) and work from there. I have a little sticky pad that keeps the % off MSRP I won stuff at my desk - it ranges from 27% - 58%. I have a 15% on there, but that was for the Dwarf Hewer - which you can only get from GW anymore. So I still considered that a win. It's just a matter of checking often, in multiple ways (since people mis-list stuff all the time) and being patient. A lot of these things took months of checking for me to get a bargain on.

I'm actually getting a little sad, as I only have a handful of minis on my "list" to still track down.

Got a few of them. Most recent one was a boat-load of Orks:

. 5 Nobz on the sprue
. 11 Boyz on the sprue
. 30 Boyz, some partly-assembled, some primed, some fully-painted
. 6 Heavy Weapons Boyz with Rocket Launchers, Flamethrowers, and other weapons.
. 10 Nobz, some partly-assembled, some primed, some fully-painted, one converted into Dok
. 2 Warbosses, their right arms not glued on so that weapons options can be alternated
. 3 Deffkoptas, two constructed and primed, one still on the sprue
. More than enough bases of different sizes to use on the sprue models once off the sprue
. Assorted Gretchen and Squigs
. Several bitz bags included heads for Boyz and Nobz, Nobz kit weapons, Boyz weapons, arms, and other bitz.

Mostly from AoBR, to be fair, but there was a fair amount just from kits. I wound up paying $70 for it, retail (assuming normal kit prices, not AoBR) at somewhere around $250.

Another one that I recently picked out was several sets of Wolf Terminators (10 in total) that I bought for $80, shipping included. All told, I think I paid about $70 for the Terminators plus shipping from the UK.

Not that exciting, saving like 20 bucks on Terminators, but I don't use ebay that much.

I have 2 cool stories (bro) about this.

Recently, someone on Dakka (probably WarOne) posted a link to a store closeout. My nephew has been dying to get into 40k with IG, but I was put off by the price. I obviously am aware that 40K is expensive, but he has no interest in troops at all and wants to do tanks only, and there is no way to do that for IG without a minimum of 11 dudes on foot that I am aware of. So, the way I saw it, I'd need at least 2x boxes of Cadians (Vets) and a Commisar (HQ) just to be able to put them on a table, which is like what, $85ish? Not an unreasonable price per se but kind of spendy for dudes he doesn't particular want and I certainly don't want to paint, I have my own models to not get painted up. Anyway, the closeout had these boxes of Cadians that been discontinued - 20 cadians per box, buy-it-now for $35, free shipping. I wound up with 3 of those boxes, plus a metal lord commisar for $7.50 and a Command HQ Squad for $15 - all in, $95 bucks for 40 guardsmen, a command squad, and a commisar. Not bad eh?

A more lulzy one was a couple of years ago. I really wanted a land raider, and some dude was selling 3 of them. More to the point, the prices were cheap as hell - the bids were only like $30 each and there were only a few hours left, and it was the middle of the night. I wound up putting in a max bid of $30 on a LRC and 2 LR's, figuring I'd have to win one of the three, right?

Sure enough, that morning... I had won all 3. I totally did not have a spare 90 bucks to spend on plastic army dudes so I had to have my wife slip me $60 till payday with 4 shades of regret and shame (remember, I only intended to spend $30!). Luckily, it's now 2012, and Captain Hindsight is giving me a high-five for scoring 3 boxed land raiders for $90 shipped now that they are like $70 each.

In a surprise to no one, by the way, not one of those land raiders is yet painted or even primed.

Nice find!

Last night, similar story to yours. Someone is selling off bunch of space marine combo sets , chapter box , line breaker box x2
it was like $91 but I dont need 6 vindicators so I passed xD

I only have one story of any worth on the day I decided to start playing 40k (12/10/10), I managed to find two deals that I have still yet to beat.
For $61 I got 60 Ork boyz, and 6 Lootas all built and painted up to a nice tabletop standard.
And moments later I picked up a Mad Dok, Snikrot, Weirdboy, Big Mek, Warboss, and some assorted other metal HQs and elites for $17.
I have yet to do that well again.

3 complete sets of genestealers including broodlords from the new space marine boardgame on the sprue for a grand total of £10 on ebay. Probably my best bargain.

100 O&G boys + warbosses / chariots etc on the sprue for £74, not bad either.

I have a similar story to Ouze. Where I went to bed, and had bid on a bunch of auction thinking I would maybe win one.

I was looking for some spiky bits from chaos tank spurs. To add a bit of dread to my game board and scenery. While searching for bits on ebay. I find a guy listing a ton of new on the spur chaos vehicles that will end in the early morning hours. Everything had spiky bit spurs ( I wanted like 2 or 3), and the bids were really low. So I bid on everything thinking come morning if I was lucky I would win one or two. I really didn't think I would win any, but the hope was there. I put like 15 dollar bids on the Rhinos and 30 dollar bids on the Land Raiders and Vindicators. Then went to bed.

Come morning I went to take a look to see if I had won anything. To my horror and excitement I had won 9 of them. Horror because I had to pay much more then I had intended, and Excitement because I had won so many new models at decent prices. In all I payed $153.31 including shipping for the lot. I got 2 Land Raiders (one was $24 and the other was $23). One Vindicator (for $19). 6 Rhinos (2 for $13, 3 for $12 and 1 for $10).

Once I got the models in hand. I noticed all the Rhinos had no spiky bits spurs. The action showed them all having them. So I asked the seller if he had forgotten to ship them. He gave me a 14 dollar credit for the mistake. My final coast was now 139.31. I was happy to get some money back as I didn't plan on winning so many, and really only wanted to spent maybe half that at the time. I got the 3 sets of spiky bit spurs I wanted, and all the transports I would ever need. Since then I have won a whirlwind tank spurs auction. So I turned one of the rhinos into a Whirlwind. The Whirlwind spur rhino combo still comes in at less the 40% retail. I still haven't put them all together yet, and probably wont anytime soon.

Someone was selling a ridiculous amount of Tau pickup only. I was the only bidder at $500 AU.
From that I got 7 Devilfish, 3 Hammerhead, 8 Piranha, 2x Shadowsun, 18 XV25, 12 XV15, 6 Pathfinders, 2x Shadowsun, 1x Command,er 15 XV8, 6 XV88, 2 Sniper Teams, 30 Kroot, 90 Firewarriors and gun drones to last two lifetimes. And a skaven. The vast majority still on sprue.
I think it totalled to something over $3000 AU at todays prices without using battleforces.

I have to say I am happy I just went to Ebay as a random trip and bought some old Dark Reapers for my Eldar Corsair-themed army- 4 Aspect warriors and an Exarch for 20 dollars with shipping. They are the really old ones (2nd edition, I think?) without the awkward squares that stick out from each side of the helmets, just the skull shape. The Exarch is the old version with the Shuriken catapult held to his hip and pointing.

Nothing special, but still 15 dollars less than the Finecast boxed set, and with some of that good old 2nd edition style.

They are these sculpts(but unpainted). Can anyone tell me if they are what I think they are? I'm pretty sure they are 2nd edition, and I think there has been two resculpts since then?:

Post by: J.Black

I think they're 3rd/4th edition

They are the sculpt between what is available now and the ones with the pointy helmets with square bits (which are 2nd edition btw)!

Honestly? My #1 ebay find is this ebay store.

http://stores.ebay.com/westcoastcomicsandcollectibles

It is a godsend for someone who lives in Japan. Even with shipping included, the prices are still something like 35-40% off Japan retail.

I highly suggest people from Australia or NZ, or anywhere with outrageous double US/UK retail prices, check that store out as well. It works as an incredible substitute for Wayland until they get their act together.

For those that are "worried" about it being ebay, from my understanding, it is just a regular online store that uses ebay as a storefront for advertising etc.

Latest haul, as of today:

22 Rogue Trader plastic Imperial Guardsmen and 5 Rogue Trader metal commissars for 31 bucks, SHIPPED

Also just won 7 Rogue Trader metal Imperial Guardsmen for like 12 dollars shipped.

If I had bought this stuff from GW online, would've been 3 boxes of guardsmen for $87 (not including tax) and 5 metal commissars for $66.25. In short, I saved about $120. Not bad, not bad at all.

1 brooldlord
3 Tyranid warriors
21 Gaunts
20 hormagaunts
2 ripper swarms
1 biovore, with spore mines
21 genestealers

For £40.

By comparison, the GW Battalion contains;
3 Warriors
16 Horagaunts
16 Termagaunts
8 Genestealers

And weighs in with an impressive £70 price tag. A quick bit of maths suggests the rest of the items comes to around £50 or so, so roughly 1/3 retail.

It also comes with a Codex, but despite what the listing says, I'm pretty sure it's not the new one.

I'm actually a terrible eBayer, but I got this from a guy at my flgs for like 100 dollars...

There is a partially assembled defiler missing from this picture, and 16 Khorne Berserkers painted in Iron Warriors colors that he found hidden in the store (he knew they were a part of the lot, but they weren't with the lot).

It also came with the 3rd edition Codex (where the force org was legal lol, it's not legal with everything on the table, but it is several thousand points under the current codex.

Well here are some shots of the army, shots of all of the squads can be found here

A Techmarine, probably used as an Aspiring Champion with a Servo Arm:

A couple of Servitors:

A sorcerer with force ax

A Chaos Warsmith model with a Power Weapon

An old Terminator with a Combi-Melta and a Nob's arm w/ Powerklaw (counts as power fist):

Another Chaos Warsmith model on a 40mm base with an eldar sword (probably going to use it as a daemon weapon)

And I'd love to know more about this model, all I can assume is those are lightning claws on his hands:

First of all, that's insane. You could easily sell this stuff off for at least triple the price, good job!

As for that model, he's one of the 2nd edition Chaos Space Marine models. The Chaos Space Marine powerfists looked a lot different (and way cooler, if you ask me) in 2nd edition.

I also have this exact model here:

£70 including postage for two tactical squads, two assault squads, two rhinos, a sternguard squad, a tactical terminator squad, chaplain cassius, a scout sniper squad, a dreadnaught, a drop pod, a commander and a command squad was pretty good.

Most of it still on the sprue, although the commander, terminators, dreadnaught and some tactical marines had literally been dunked in mithril silver - but the thicker the paint job, the easier it is to remove...

Would have been £290 new. Of course, I have a lot of the stuff already, but I saw it as a good source of conversion material, and I can probably sell half of it on and make my money back...

Trick with ebay is to make calculated guesses based on the listings that don't describe their contents very well and have unclear photos. The photo for this one only showed about half of what the box actually contained, so I risked it and got a good deal!

Not particularly, as far as I know. The RT Chaos Marines are the ones that a lot of people like (plus they're rare) and it's not uncommon for them to go for at least $10 a model. The 2nd edition ones I would place at about $5 a model.
