I myself tend to change profile pictures/avatars quite a lot.
Most of the time I create my own, and every once in a while
take a picture from the internet that's just epic (IMO ofcourse).
This one right now is one based on a fusion of V and Krillin (DBZ)
I made it real quick.
It's very likely I'm going to change it very very soon.
I'm curious what yours mean and why you put it there!?
My reason is purely because I made a sketch in the right size
Mine is a road sigh that states "Caution water on road during rain".
And yes, it's a road sigh. It blows my mind that someone felt the need
to state the obvious in such a manner. It makes me suprised that we haven't
all killed each other off or wondered around lost, starving to death because
aparently we are that stupid. It makes me just sigh and shake my head saddly.

Well, there's the dumbest statement of the month.
Really? Rick Santorum is campaigning and you levy such a charge at a fellow Dakkanaut? That was really over the top and inappropriate, and the follow up was also unnecessarily rude.
Have we turned into a scary looking squirrel thread? Well, it was inevitable, everything always does eventually turn into a scary looking squirrel thread.
He wasn't being remotely insulting, and his only crime was not knowing what a sister of battle was. It's hardly a crime and there is no need to be so aggressive and barbed when someone makes a simple comment.
Just when I was sticking up for you in GGs thread you go and do that!
On topic, my avatar is the cap badge and green beret of the Royal Marine Commando. I earned mine and served for ten years because I am hard as nails.
That i have a cone for a hat...
And i was one of the lucky few that got a super special avatar picture from that Ninja Bread chap before he went dark...

Anywho, mine shows Im obviously a master artist. And an Ork.
Also, if anyone ever wondered, it actually says "DAKKA DAKKA" in the bubble next to me

Actually quite a few people try to insult Sisters by calling them female space marines.
These people are worthless trash, of course, but given that I hope you understand why I was so annoyed even though in this case it was a misunderstanding.

I have often refered to the SoBs as female sm to someone who doesn't to give a vague idea of the playstyle and aesthetic. If they are interested I explain in more detail but I mean nothing insulting by this as I want them just can't afford them.
Also it seems a waste of time to insult somebody else toy soldiers based on the idea that my toys are better. You get that a lot?

How is calling them female SM's insulting? They are like uber-people.
... It's because you can't make female SM. And the only reason the SOB exist is so they have an all female army for the feminists out there, so their army can be superior to male armies.
TheRobotLol wrote:How is calling them female SM's insulting? They are like uber-people.
Mostly, because Sisters of Battle are human. It's like if you looked at Tyranids and said "they're like necrons if necrons were bugs", it's just stupid and also dumb. But also because "female space marines" is a controversial topic that causes much nerdrage.

That would be from Redwall, its not Martin the Warrior or Matimayo...... sure aint Salamandastron.. unfortunatly i cant remember which one as an ex gf ran off with all my Red Wall books so i cant check
At time of posting my avatar says "I like WWII era battleships." This pic of the Nelson class BBs main armament shows the power of these floating castles of steel.
Factoid: HMS Rodney of the Nelson class was instrumental in tuning the famous Bismarck into a flaming wreck, ably assisted by the King George V..

Mattyrm I'm a she ^^
And I'm sorry Melissia, you have to understand I am extremely new to 40k, and just got started on my LOTR army.
Some DCM people are helping me getting to know 40k world, but again I'm rreeeaally new to all of this.
My avatar shows that Trixie is great and powerful?
This would make more sense if othere gave feedback on what they read on other's avatars. More often than not, others interpret something different that what we planed for.
Well I've always used some sort of silly looking Necron because, well I like Necrons, 40k is silly, and there's a whole lot of 40k and silliness on this website.

I am amazed that you felt the need to call people "worthless trash" and even more so that the Modquisition has let it remain. Uncalled for.
Seriously though, my avatar came from Gone with the Blastwave, a webcomic that "Isn't active, but he updates it when he feels the urge to". Honestly, I have never laughed so hard as I did in those 45 comic strips. Not only are they all wearing Trench Coats but I figured that I could try to get some publicity for the dude.
My Avatar is a Pysker being Soul-Binded to the Emperor. But I would like to have a Tech Priest or an Enginseer as my pic but I have not found any good pics on the internet. So I am just goin to stick to it for the time being
Hm, he DID wield the Sword of Martin and the fur roughly matches, but Matthias was more known for wearing green than... that monstrosity.
And Mathias was also known for being a mouse, not a squirrel Damn, those were awesome books. Martin the Warrior is still one of my favorite characters in any work of fiction, next to Paul Atreides and Ibram Gaunt.
And I think this is Arven, (from which book I can't remember)
EDIT: No it's not Arven, it's Tam. There, issue solved.
That... I play Dark Angels and like Deathwing? Maybe that I like playing the big tough guy when really I feel really small and end up something like the sensitive green giant? Ok, freudian button off. Seriously though, I just looked for a Deathwing pic I thought looked neat.

FabricatorGeneralMike, I have to be honest, I thought yours was just a bin! Sorry!
I don't know why I still have mine, probably more than a decade or so now across different forums, I think I keep it just so people who do the same thing can see what poster I am straight away.
I have to be honest, I was probably being a little bit scurrilous when I first used it as there was a fair bit of 'SQUATS SUCK *rage*' going on back then.
Although I do feel a little bit like a fraud still using it, I sold my squats many years ago! (Although, I am collecting Mantic Forge Fathers )
Regarding avatars, I remember someone making a post years ago about the correlation between cuteness-level of an avatar and how aggressive the poster was. But, I think it was more down to a couple of posters (now banned/departed from either this forum or others) who behaved like bulls in a china shop yet had a cute avatar which contrasted wildly with their posting habits.

Agreed, they might have though, no one really knows. But that was an incredible over reaction to a simple question, even if he was being a bit jerkish about it, I mean, who cares if he was insulting sisters of battle? People insult Orks all the time, I dont go for their fething throats over it
My avatar shows I like bad jokes, and I'm not particularly funny.
It's made me chuckle more than once.
As to mine, I have a healthy obseession with Druchii?
Also it was drawn/coloured by Aurelia (Dakka name of my better half) so It will be my avatar for a long time to come, unless we have a better idea to represent the username.

Concur.
The moderators (or at least this one) have let it remain because it's not insulting anyone specific, and under the doctrine of letting people have enoough rope to hang themselves. That comment, in a nutshell, lets folks know a lot about how seriously Melissia takes the 40k fluff, and Sisters stuff specifically. She would undoubtedly get along better with people and have fewer run-ins with us if she wouldn't get so darn angry and take arguments and jokes about Sisters personally.
Leaving it there has given the opportunity for you two to respond to it critically but not insultingly, and you two are fairly easygoing folks with whom (to the best of my knowledge) Melissia has not had run-ins about Sisters background, so hopefully you help her to see how her comments are seen by others and why it may be of benefit for her to tone down her rhetoric. In my perception she has actually improved over the years and calmed a bit, but we all have our foibles we can use help working on.

Alright, you e got me curious now. What's this book series you've been talking about?
Some people have criticised the books on the basis that characters of each animal species always act in the same manner, thus typecasting them according to race. Which may be reading too much into them.
Mannahnin wrote:Some people have criticised the books on the basis that characters of each animal species always act in the same manner, thus typecasting them according to race. Which may be reading too much into them.
All the stereotypes are based in that particular animals stereotypes or behaviours. Most carnivores are bad because the eat the tiny heroes, rats are evil as we see rats as evil etc etc.
However when people get to the point where a story about little furry animals who go around building forts and saving the day becomes racism they've crossed over into a very special level of crazy. YMMV.
One thing that's never made much sense to me. Are the animals the same size as in real life? Or ...?
Cos if the mice get bigger then so would the badgers by comparison right so they would be giants.
However when people get to the point where a story about little furry animals who go around building forts and saving the day becomes racism they've crossed over into a very special level of crazy.
I don't think it's crazy to read symbolism or similes of reality into a fantasy story. It can be wrong, but I don't see how it would be crazy.
nomsheep wrote:You could say anything which has one or multiple clear cut races as bad and good is borderline racist.
They animals are based on the actual animals behaviors and grouped so that the bad guys and good guys are easier for children to recognise. Simples.
I understand reading symbolism into things but there has got to be a point where it gets out of hand and becomes an obession.
Okay, but I think you're degrading fantasy lit and children's lit by acting as if such cannot be present in that fare. Certainly people have read political meaning into The Hunger Games. I don't think it's crazy or obsessive to do so. It can be incorrect, or a misreading of the author's intent. Many people have read allegories about WWI or WWII into Lord of the Rings. Tolkien said they were wrong, and he intended no such thing, but I don't think they were crazy to even think it.
Tolkien also argued that what one got out of the story was more important tahn what the author intended, so though he objected, he didn't denigrate those people.
nomsheep wrote:They animals are based on the actual animals behaviors
Idealized behaviors perhaps. Predators are treated as ignoble villains but predators can easily have nobility to them.
Iirc there is one where the original bad guy is a noble warrior trying to instill his values in his hearty children. He is relatively liked by his people .and servants etc

This is a fair point, the symbolism can be present in these mediums but I still believe that anyone who reads to deeply into a book with no agenda (like these ones) has got either got too much time on their hands or a screw loose. Like I say though this is my opinion and YMMV.
Ok, I did not expect to start a discussion on racism by asking about a book staring small furry creatures... Is it wrong that this makes me More intrigued by the book's concept?
Not at all...try it. It's a good read, good old-fashioned storytelling. The worse thing that can happen is if you don't like it hordes of Skaven will pour out of the pages and devour you. That's all.
Basically just an old picture of my army's colour scheme, since they're Space Wolves, but painted differently than standard. It's kind of stuck on me since.
I usually use this one on other forums though:
I use that one because I love Planet of the Apes and the image makes me laugh.
Well, I love Star Wars, and the Clone Wars would have to be my favorite time period. As cool as the Jedi are, I always loved the Clone Troopers, especially the Commanders and early troopers due to their Mandalorian heritage and training...of all the commanders I know anything about, I always like Cody the best...That's about it
ahahahaha.. brilliant.
I'd guess mine says I collect Tyranids, or possible have some deep desire to be an all dominating, all controlling mastermind/galactic power.
Or both.

it tells the following concepts of me.
- Kylie Minogue fan
- a live audience of her Aphrodite les Follies concert tour.
- A cat person =^.^=
That I can't be bothered to change my avatar after having the same one for almost 2 years.
I probably should change it, because someones turned up thats using the original image that I used for mine. (I flipped mine horizontally so that the farseer was looking at the posts)
Pff, real men throw their paintballs, and wear no protection..........................................................maybe thats why I have so many kids
That I know if the avatar is looking in the general direction of the post, the eye will follow it and my posts are more likely to be read than if Clint were pointing in the correct direction, which would be away from the post.
Also that I like Clint Eastwood and the Dirty Harry films in partcular.
A professional psychiatrist would probably be able to link it to an unhappy childhood or somesuch crap as well.

Indeed it is.
The conversation went something like this:
Me: "hey, wanna go to Comic Con this summer, and dress up as G.I. Jo-"
S/O: "-Joe characters?! Oh my God, yes! We are dressing up as Cobra!"
Anyway, from our experience, you will probably have no luck at all if you try to get your girlfriend to dress up as this:
Spoiler:
However, you may be able to convince her to dress up as this:
Spoiler:
And once you convince her of that, then she'll eventually want to upgrade to the "classic" outfit. I know this because:
1. That "classic" outfit will make a novice feel very uncomfortable.
2. Costuming is addictive. Once you put together a good costume and have your picture taken a hundred times by people who are actually impressed, you'll want more of it, and you'll want to out-do yourself.
3. Putting together a good costume and having praise lauded on you will greatly increase a novice's confidence to try something more daring. Such as the "classic" outfit.
Anyway, even before all that, a good first step is to get her into the mix, at least. Did you attend the Vancouver Fan Expo?
