WarPaint

- Free
- Successor to "Paint Converter"
- Full conversions for NEW CITADEL, OLD CITADEL, VALLEJO GAME COLOR, P3, VALLEJO MODEL COLOR, REAPER, COAT D'ARMS, VALLEJO MODEL AIR, and ARMY PAINTER
- Unique color preview for every color so you can gauge for yourself if the colors match well enough to meet your specification
- Automatically detects paint type-- it won't try to match a new Citadel "Drybrush" color with a "Layer" type paint
- Always tries to find the closest color, although I'm constantly updating the database with more appropriate colors.
- Alphabetical sorting OR sorting via model number
The WarPaint upgrade key app
- Essentially a donate key if you like the app
- Unlocks quantity tracking for your own personal paint stock
- Does not include any trademark sensitive data-- all paint data is included in the free version
- WarPaint automatically senses if the key is present and updates your UI accordingly!
(Edit: WarEdit has been removed from my post, I'll be giving it its own thread soon when it's further along).

WarEdit+ sounds like a very creative take on list building and I am 100% for it. I caution you to be very careful how you craft the UI for this app.
As for WarPaint, let us know when it hits the app stores! I for one will definitely buy the pro or plus version if the free version is well designed.

Yeah, I'm trying really hard to make it an intuitive and fun user experience-- while retaining features that'd set it above the rest. It's not easy, but I'm confident I'll arrive at something that people will like!

Hm? It's included the regular WarPaint app =)
What about the Kindle Fire?
Not sure. As far as I know, it uses some form of Android which means that anything is possible! Since the Blackberry OS can run the android java VM now, I may even release a version on their app store as well. Eventually.

Reaper
P3 would be very nice to have too
Reaper and P3 are in WarPaint+. Not sure what VMA is xD

Seems a pretty neat idea, especially with the new citadel range
I think people are getting confused about the types of paint covered since the image you posted doesnt include the other brands
Hmm I do not know how many people use it but I think having Army Painter on there would be a nice touch too

I remember you posting about this before, cool to see it close to release!
If I had a smart phone (hopefully will get out of the stone age at some point soon) I'd totally pay 99 cents... and the free version comparing old citadel / new citadel / vallejo is great

Thanks RiTides! Yeah I haven't really gotten a chance to sit down and work on it until recently. And I hope you are able to get a smartphone sometime soon too =D
Also, I've updated the original post with more up-to-date screen shots of WarPaint and WarPaint+.
I took WarEdit's SS down because it was pretty old and I'm no where near done with it's UI to be honest! Soon though =)

The new paint app looks pretty sweet. I really like being able to track what paints I currently have, I am getting the app when it come out. I just counted and I have at lest 4 Dark Greens. The WarEdit also sounds really impressive. I have been looking for an Army Building app that is more user friendly than all of the others currently out. I also would greatly appreciate Tablet support! Thanks for the hard work!

Hi there,
I do concur - great idea with the converter. I already use the old converter and really love the product.
Let me chime in with the request for VMA (Vallejo Model Air), for all us users of Airbrushs. I for one would definitely be willing to pay for a conclusive comparison chart for Model Air .
Please add tablet support - it yould help a lot.
Thank you for all the work and effort

Ah, vallejo model air... Never used the stuff, but heard good things. I should probably invest in a few bottles; I do actually use an airbrush from time to time. The free version isn't likely to change... It covers the "big three"-- the old and new citadel ranges + VGC-- at no cost. The paid version contains more specialized ranges, and I have every intent to keep adding new ranges, VMA included. I'm probably also going to create a separate tablet UI.

Hey guys! I've got kind of side-tracked lately (damn you, Diablo 3) but I'm about ready to release WarPaint for Android. I won't be able to put the Apple version up until I get enough money back from app sales to resubscribe to the Apple developer connection.

If you're interested in helping me do a bit of QA, send me a PM (or an e-mail, via the e-mail address shown below) with your phone's OS version (minimum requirement is Eclair), model (IE, HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung Galaxy SII, etc), and optionally a contact e-mail address.
You can send bug reports and suggestions to hexxusdev@gmail.com or just tweet them to @HexxusDev . I'm particularly looking for improper color matches and unexpected errors/behavior at this point. Once that's sorted out, we can move on to implementing more features!

Looks good but as soon as you charge money and the GW paint names are there it's going to get hit by the ip hammer especially as the new colours are so IP centric. What if you made it so it can compare any paint range and you let 'fans' submit lists in a similar way to quartermaster or army builder. That way we get your excellent idea (which you can charge for and not need a 'free' version) and it doesn't ship with IP sensitive information.

selecting Old Citadel "Regal Blue" results in "Abaddon Black" populating in the Citadel results.
That seems weird.
Edit:
Found a few more that look weird.
Old Citadel Mecharite Red results in Citadel XV-88
Citadel Mephiston Red results in Old Citadel Calthan Brown
Citadel Ceramite White results in Old Citadel Iyanden Darksun
So far loving the app. I'm gonna go buy the unlock now.
Any thoughts on possibly allowing a fourth product line to be compared?
Also it would be cool if it had craft paints (like Apple Barrel) as an option(not super important though).
19110
Post by: Abaddon
Regarding Ceramite White: For better or worse, this isn't a bug right now. Ceramite White is considered a "Base" type paint, which correlates directly to the Old Citadel "Foundation" line. Since GW never had a pure white Foundation paint, WarPaint will try to find the next best thing-- which, in this case, is mathematically most similar to Iyanden Darksun. I have adjusted my formula to account for the color perception biases of the average human eye, but sometimes there just isn't anything close enough for our brains to consider a "match". I want to eventually implement an option for a more lenient match predicate, so instead of matching Ceramite White to Iyanden Darksun, WarPaint will instead say "no, that's not close enough-- let's look for a more similar paint, even if it's a different type". Which, in this case, would probably be Ceramite White -> Skull White =)
For now, there may be some general quirkiness comparing a large paint range like Vallejo Model Color (over 200 colors of various types) or the New Citadel line (close to 150) to a small range like Army Painter (about 36 different colors of colors) or even the old Citadel line in some cases. Aaaand sometimes it's just a bug, like Regal Blue to Abaddon Black and a couple others you listed xD I'll be sure to include fixes in the next update, thanks for the report =)
I'm definitely planning on adding more paint ranges. Apple Barrel (as well as a couple other popular craft store-esque paint ranges), Tamiya, etc.
35177
Post by: ashtekka
Wow. Thanks for the explanation on how the comparison works. Thats actually quite cool.
Thanks for the heads up about the other paint lines. I love what you have so far especailly since you included Vallejo Model Air.

Expanding inventory features is pretty high up on my to-do list. I've had a couple of people request an "inventory sheet" feature, where you can view a list of all the paints you currently have stock of. Something like that will probably come in the next update. If it doesn't delay the update too much, I can probably also make the inventory sheet printable/e-mailable to start with.

I like WP7/8 a lot actually. The problem is Microsoft isn't very humble with their developer licensing fees-- they charge what Apple charges, for a much smaller userbase. I believe they (Microsoft/Windows Phone) currently have something like ~2% of the market share. Not economical for me at the moment :(
If you're ever looking to expand its features, I would love to be able to store my paint "recipes" along with my inventory.
So would I, haha. As soon as I'm finished making an inventory screen, I'm going to implement what I call the "Cauldron" feature. Here you'll be able to set the color, mix ratios, name, quantity, etc of your own custom concoctions.

Is there a match that you'd find more accurate for each of those respective colors within the specified ranges? WarPaint's algorithm tries to find the closest color match-- but that doesn't mean that a true "match" (within our brain's margin of error) exists between the two ranges.
I do admit, however, that the accuracy of the matches depends greatly on how close to the real thing the colors I have each paint set to are. It's easy for some colors like black and white, but harder for metallics and anything with high blue spectrum content.
I will definitely be picking this up the moment it hits iOS!
You humble me with your presence, good sir!

Hi, love the app great work!, and will upgrade. On the inventory have you considered a 'need to buy/replace' field. I currently hold an inventory on google drive with a list of paints I have and need so I can add colours when a pot gets low or I discover a paint recipe I would like to try and havent got the stock. Then when shopping I don't end up with the wrong paint. With something like this and the inventory sheet I could totaly replace my current practice.
thanks

I got one for you:
Old Citadel Warlock Purple results in Citadel Wazdakka Red.
Is that because the closest match may not be a "layer" paint?
If you grouped the "bases" and "layers" into one group and the "foundations" and regular paint into another group you might get better color matches since several foundations are now layers and vice versa

Yeah, color-wise the closest match for Warlock Purple-- a layer paint-- is probably Screamer Pink, which is a base-type paint. Matching will improve as I refine the matching algorithm, update paint colors with more accurate data, and include more advanced search predicates (including the ability to match between layer and base types). If the latter doesn't work out well enough, I think the next step is to just combine layer and base paints into one category, as you said.

Status update for Apple users: The iOS version is about done, all that's left is for me to renew my dev status with Apple. Apple's dev services are more expensive and less forgiving than Google's, so I'm going to more testing before I renew and submit for review. The review process takes Apple about 1 to 2 weeks beyond that.
Thank you to everyone who has donated on the Android version. If you don't want/need what the donate key offers, please consider just leaving a good review for me on the free app =) Now that the iOS version is done, I can start pushing out feature updates for Android (the iOS version already includes the shopping list and cauldron features).
Tablet support will be coming for both soon as well.
Finally, regarding WarEdit-- I'm not sure if I'll be able to release it. GW has been seriously bullying anyone even HOSTING user-made data files. I'm not really too sure how to circumvent this problem. We'll see.

WarEdit has proven to be quite a bit more work than I had originally anticipated, mostly due to the immense amount of graphic resources that I have to generate. That, combined with GW's new aggressive stance on sites hosting user created data files, have set me back a bit on releasing the app or even really elaborating more on it.

On here is fine, either in this thread or via private message. Alternatively, you can e-mail me at hexxusdev@gmail.com or tweet me @HexxusDev
Thanks for the report!

Just post an update (and edit the thread title) the moment it goes live on the apple app store and I will be all over this!
Thanks for all the hard work.
Yep, I'll edit the title and bump when Apple clears it for release! Thanks for allowing me post my apps on here!

Many things have been considered, especially considering GW's recent aggressive stance regarding user-made data file hosting (which is a big problem). It'd be easier just to show you what I've got planned, but that's information for another thread-- one that I will be making soon. I will post it here on the News forum so keep an eye out. All assuming I decide to keep going forward with the idea, of course.

Should maybe talk to the Battlescribe guys, maybe you can leverage something using their solution to that same GW problem?

Any news on an iOS version? A friend was showing the app off at our wargames club last week and I'd love to get it for my iPhone!

Yeah! What's up with Apple? It has been well over the two weeks you said was the longest you have seen before.
Hopefully soon...

Wish I had more to tell you guys, I really don't know. I don't think it's possible to contact their app reviewal teams. As far as I know, I've done all I can on my end.. I guess I'll try calling them tomorrow to see what I can find out, if anything.

Still nothing? I wonder if it is a copyright thing?

I'm kind of in the middle of a pissing match with Apple regarding something unrelated to Warpaint. Has to do with my developer account. Trying to get it sorted.

Still in a stalemate with Apple. One that I can only participate in during what little free time I have after work-- not exactly a good time. Not sure when this will be resolved, but when/if it is, I'll make a post here straight away.

Any updates Abaddon? I don't mean to pester, I am just starting up again and I wanted to know ...

No worries, you're not pestering at all!
Jelly Bean is giving people problems, but I don't have a computer for development right now (just made an inter-state move, still trying to get on my feet here).
I *have* decided to re-subscribe to Apple's developer program, however, so the iOS project might still see the light of day. I'm trying to get ahold of an iMac for development purposes, but they're sold out still. Argh.

A buddy of mine once told me a quick way to get into IOS development was to grab a Mac Mini. Only a couple hundred bucks, and just hook it up to a monitor and you're good to go. Might be something to look at instead of dropping a grand or two on a full size setup.

Nice. If you are tracking paint inventory, it might be a cool feature to be able to mark the ones you need to buy soon ... so that the next time you are at the store, you have your shopping list already done along with a list of equivalent colors.

That's a viable option, and it may be the road I end up taking. That said, I wanted to consolidate all of my needs into one system and just dual boot it. It's easier to do this on an Apple machine, since the hardware the OS X supports is extremely limited. If it were more reliable, I probably would have just gone the Hackintosh route-- something I've tried before and found too unstable to use for development purposes.

Yep, GS3's use jelly bean. 4.1 and beyond made a lot of... Interesting changes to the way Android works. I can't tell yet how much of my code I'm going to have to change, and there's a chance folks may lose some of their paint data. I'll do my best to implement a reliable backup method before I make any major changes to the app.

Yep, this one gets asked a lot. It was actually already in my iOS version before it was put on hiatus. I want the Android folks to have it too, but I need a computer first... I'm just using my work computer right now. Heh.

Meh, I don't mind about losing any paint data, personally. I do track my paints, but re-entering that info would be a minimal hassle. The main thing I use the app for is the paint compatibility, and far prefer that to be fully functional before anything else.
