Suggest a feature that would improve dakka.... @ 2012/04/07 00:13:46

Post by: legoburner

I have a massive list of new features, bug fixes and upgrades to old features planned out until the heat death of the universe, but I thought I'd start a thread to welcome suggestions you all might have regarding possible new dakka features that you'd like to see. Our software is typically written from scratch, so pretty much anything you can imagine can be created with enough time.

The following things are in the pipeline (albeit often slow / a long way off for various reasons):
Gallery rebuild - making it faster, easier to browse, easier to sort, easier to view and leave comments, inline voting on gallery images elsewhere on dakka, better tagging, image exalting/faves, etc
PM inbox/outbox - make it more useable (sorting, filtering, etc)
Store finder - expand, improve and clean up a bit

The following are not going to happen for reasons outlined in various threads in the nuts and bolts forum:
No tapatalk integration
No 'official' dakka mobile app (sooner spend time on improving normal dakka browsing for all mobile devices), an API is in the works/mostly done for third parties to use for the home page blog feed, app developers PM me if interested.

I wont respond to many of the requests here, but good or feasible ones will be added to the to-do list. Rack your brains for anything you think might be cool, useful or end some minor annoyance you have with dakka!

Thanks all

Something like a screensaver that you can switch on and leave on the computer, that shows gallery images at full monitor sizes and then fades to the next one. It could be tailored to filter the slideshow for 'orks' or 'high ratings' or 'recent' etc.

Give incentive to voting in the gallery. Something maybe to do with the nickname related to post count? I can see how this might come with vote spammers, but maybe something can be implemented to prevent that,

Currently the title of a thread changes yellow if you have viewed it before.

It would be nice if the title changed a different color when it has unread posts since your last read.

The bullet on the left of the title is yellow if there's unread posts. That's already taken care of.

Show the ages of posters, and be able to set ignore functions based on age?

Put a mini gallery in a users profile page.

Promote voting in the gallery somehow.

Respond to emails people send to the site.

It's best that people don't post their ages. We don't need one more thing to be elitists about. This is coming from me, who dips into being an elitist far too often and has actually gotten hatemail from people I told to type properly. I wouldn't blanket everyone based on age, as there are some very good posters who have volunteered that they're on the younger side of the spectrum, being around 14-16. I've also seen posters half again my age type like lobotomized chimpanzees.

If possible, probably will take some work, fixing the list tags so that they are not required for each line but add the bullet to each new line within the text the tags surround.

The Youtube tags, currently they seem pretty fussy and require a very plain url or they'll refuse to work.

Maybe a favorite feature for the gallery, like the exalt feature. Gallery comments updating to show the current vote of the writer at the time of viewing the comment rather than at the time of posting.

Probably a bit of overhead to those, just throwing up stuff off the top of my head. Most of the things I'd think should be implemented are already suggested elsewhere anyway like the integration of voting and threads in the showcase forum. Though for the voting I think it would be nice as a post option, automatically selected for show case, optional for the rest of the painting sections and disabled on the rest.

I have a few serious improvements that could be made:

Encourage better posts. Allow users to vote on 3 posts every month. Whoever has the highest 3 scores is awarded a 'Poster of the Month'. So as well as stating how many posts you've made, it now also gives you how many times you've been voted 'topic of the month or something. Maybe nothing but people will want to submitt worthwhile posts to try to win some kudos.

How about a page which people cannot place comments on that lists out every wargame. E.g., in alphabetical order it lists out all wargames. This would be controlled by a moderator who could be emailed to add another game onto the list. Click on the game listed it gives you a brief description of the game. Then maybe allow a comon set of voting buttons for each game, E.g., ease of playing, value for money, supportability. This prevents long topics on each games system, but allows a breif overview of peoples thoughts. I'd happily volunteer to mod this.

Same as above, but with retailers? Again a simple voting thread followed by a breif description of the retailer. No posts are allowed on this, its just a list of retailers, Dakkaites can vote on.

Spell Check?

I'm afraid that would overload the server; it wouldn't be able to handle that kind of traffic.
Eiríkr wrote:Drag and drop // mass-upload for the gallery! I fething hate having to navigate 10+ images.

A mass upload feature would be nice. Also, images don't always upload in the order you uploaded them. Yesterday I uploaded IMG100, IMG101, IMG102, and IMG103 and I ended up with something like IMG101, IMG100, IMG103, IMG102. It makes navigating battle report galleries very difficult, or any sequence of pictures deliberately uploaded for a certain effect.

We're also seeing a larger number of people posting from phones, so there's a lot of horrid spelling and grammar coming through because of that.

For myself, I'd like to see a way for certain topics to become "locked" if a thread exists on them already.

Profile related stuff would be good.

Instead of having the one long box for extra info, allow it to be broken up easier with out the big wall of text for those of us who do use it.
Maybe giving us an extra couple of fields could in effect do that job. Games played and Other as additional fields after Biography?

Or make it so enter/return breaks up the text in the Biography bit.

Being able to tag swap shop threads in a similar way to the articles and gallery, so you can tag what you are selling, and tag what you are after - might then make it easier to search.

PM inbox/outbox - make it more useable (sorting, filtering, etc)

In addition to sorting and filtering, make it so that, when you open a PM, there's also a way to access the history from there (like in a scrolling window below the message), especially when SENDING PM's. That will make it a lot easier to keep track of discussions and trade negotiations.

Also... Do we REALLY need re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re:re: at the beginning of a message? Can't we be fine with just ONE "Re:?"

Two things: the first is a list of the no-no words. I've seen several words that I was surprised were not pulled by the profanity filter, and been equally surprised at some that are edited by the filter. If there was some kind of reference list, that would be awesome. I think that some words that some folks consider 'strong emphasis' fall into the category of 'vulgar' to others, and it results in me sometimes sitting at my computer being very confused at what I can and cannot say.

The second thing is some kind of official proclamation in regard to bannings. I can understand forbidding the discussion of other users' account statuses, and I can understand the administration refusing to comment on banned users. It is when both occur together that I become confused. It gives me a creepy Orwellian feel, and I am always left wondering if my friends are just taking a break from Dakka, or if they've been black-bagged by the secret police in the middle of the night. And if I discuss it, then I risk being black-bagged myself. I'm not asking for a big to-do, just a short, simple, "User X has been banned." Then we (the community) would know what happened, and even if we didn't know the reasons, we could certainly piece it together in most cases.

We need a comment section on Dakkanaut Users. But you can delete comments if you wish you comment on that user's comment and it appears on that user's main page.
I mean it may be the biggest pain to do. But it would be cool to see what other people think of this user so we don't have massive problems with it later on.

My first suggestion is to allow the use of previous forum titles. The title progressions are one of the fun things about Dakka, but they aren't always universally liked. Being able to go back a step or two to your favorite earned rank might be a fun little expansion on the system.

The second suggestion I have is more serious. Please relabel the Warmachine/Hordes "you make da call" section. No user here makes the calls unless Jason Soles or David Carl decide to start posting on Dakka. It misrepresents how rules disputes should be handled in those games and portrays them in ways that might give new players the wrong idea about proper etiquette when they can't easily resolve or understand issues with the rules.

The language filter altered to correct any usage of Failcost, Finecrap, and it's variants to "Finecast". Sorry guys, it's done.

In the recent Dakka Painting Contest, there were some kind of esoteric image resolution requirements that appeared to be driven less by the organizer requirements and more to do with some unspecified issue with the gallery engine? Something that required them to be 1000x800 or so. If that restriction could be removed or altered it might prove useful for subsequent contests. On the other hand, Inquisitor Lewis has stated he might allow several images going forward, so it's probably a low priority at best.

This is almost certainly more work then anyone is willing to do for free, but I'd love to see a +rep type of system that autocollapses crap posts. I understand this was suggested previously and nixed because it would be too open to gaming, and I'd certainly understand if that remains the case.

I'd also like to see a limited time thing were people could donate to the site, like a mini-kickstarter, where the funds be use explicitly and clearly for the developers and such to buy themselves a few cases of beer or a battleforce or something like that, rather than for site expenses. Is that really a bad idea? I think you guys do a terrific, incredible job on the site.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, and when you get an email notifying you that you've gotten a PM, perhaps the text of the PM in the email. That would be cool.

Lego, I noticed you said no to an app, but woud it be possible/feasable to allow gallery uploads from a mobile without having to have an app?

I take almost all my blog pics and battle report pics on my iPhone and it would be much more convienient to be able to upload them to the dakka gallery straight from there, rather than having to mess around and get the cable out to move the photos onto my laptop.

If I try to upload from my phone now, the "browse" button where you'd normally select the photo is just greyed out.

That would be fantastic! Or after their user name.

Now that I think of it, something to mitigate the flamefest that is the YMDC section would be sweet. It seems like I frequently see people ask (reasonable) questions, only to be accosted for having the temerity to ask them. And when someone dares to advance an argument in the contrary, it seems like it only gets worse, with everyone taking "Well, I think that what they mean is X" to mean "You're an incompetent boob and should be sterilized for the good of the species." I know there's a cautionary line in the forum header, but still, if there was some kind of distilled, FAQ for the YMDC, that would be spectacular.

MAP IDEAS:

#1) Could we have a map like the store finder for Dakka gamers?

#2) Is the store finder only usuable with maps of real world places? Or can it be changed to host campaigns of otherworld maps?

If that's not possible could Dakka support a fundraiser to pay for some service that would provide campaign maps through Dakka? I'm a Luddite, but some point-and-click method of coming up with campaign maps would be fun.

Seriously, if you can't be bothered to upload the pic, it is probably not worth it. Or at least not all 100 images you just want to post this second.

Oh, and I support some improvement and introduced modalities to the search function. Currently it is easier to use google.

Or for people with p&m blogs? It wasn't the lack of comments that killed my blog, it was that every post was a 20 minute upload session.

most other forums i have been on (bartertown, automotive-related forums, local forums) all have the ability to see when someone you have messaged has read or at least opened the message you sent them, i received an offer from a member on my for sale thread, i said his offer was acceptable and to send payment to my email address. whether he is ignoring me or just hasnt read my message (in 3 days) is beyond me, so my question to the mods is why dont we have the "read/unread" text box in the sent messages page? The ability to create sub threads.

Ie, here we are talking about Space Marines in generel, Someone comes along and asks about Silver Skulls. Instead of taking it the original thread, be able to create a linked sub thread on silver skulls that relates back to the original thread.

You know how family trees appear with peoples names and link lines to their descendants? Same thing but for thread topics

Not a tech feature, but how about an inter-subforum painting challenge similar to the ones on the B&C? Users vow to paint a certain number of models within a certain time frame and the subforum with the highest percentage completion wins. Anyone failing the vow must provide an article or somesuch as penance for failing.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but a feature that would allow us to filter threads to show only posts that contain images. Much like we can filter them just to show the thread creator's post, it would allow for quick surfing of "show us your models" type threads. =)

This may be crazy/previously suggested:

Paint chip emoticons that correspond with the colors from various paint ranges. This way people who use citadel paint and the like could directly add a color reference to their posts.

I think that this would be a useful feature that no other Tabletop forum has. Crowd source the paint-chips and it's basically already done!

I, for one, like reading Dakka Discussions, 40k General, (occasionally) YMDC, and the Video Games and Off-Topic forums. In the "my subscribed threads" section, why not section it by

- threads created by me
- p & m threads
- news and rumour threads

etc

That'd be awesome - to know at a glance at the relevant section that one of my threads had been commented on, or an update to a rumour I'm looking out for; it means I don't have to sift through every thread name that's in no particular order in the "my subscribed" bit.

How about the ability to post multiple threads under one larger thread?

Ie

Main thread title - My Dark Eldar fiction
Sub thread 1 - first story
Sub thread 2 - second story

etc

I'm putting this forward as it would make tracking certain threads (in this case, the stories I'm writing on my Archon, Ardath Dei) easier - they'd all be in one location instead of scattered throughout the forum based on their age / number of posts

The top left of every post is a little page that links to the specific post. Sort of clunky but is possible to do so. Like this.
Guess you could screw around with the formatting of it to make the colour better than it is, but that would have to assume that every uses the same scheme and for the work safe ones white text just doesn't work.

The alternative that looks more sensible is this. Probably much more friendly to links within the quote as well.
Barksdale wrote:When someone quotes something from within a thread, it would be nice to have a button that takes you back to the original post being quoted.

Which is just wrapping the url tags around the quote's first tag. While the first was simply wrapping the quote entirely with the url tags.

By no means user friendly I suppose. But, just trying to sort of make it look easyish to implement.

i can guess why it hasnt been updated is because its extremely time consuming to do so as so many people post in it
if you wanna see if a certain user has positive remarks, just type their name in the search page in the swap shop, since the rep list is almost always recently posted in, thats usually the first link that will show up, followed by any time their username has been mentioned in the swap shop...which in my experience is rather rarely for almost every user

Either date, it wasn't the list that was updated. It was probably regarding the transaction reports? Easily verified. A friend of mine is newer to the swap shop, and finally has a couple trades under his belt. I posted one for him on January 30th, 2012. Another user posted one for him on 03/13/12. Yet his name does not exist in the first post to show that he has any positive trades. None of my trades since the beginning of this year have been added either.

I had no idea how to do the search thing to check for positive trades. Pretty handy actually, thanks for that Jordanis. Now I'm no expert, but I like to think I'm halfway decent when it comes to forum usage. If I had no idea to do that, I'm pretty sure quite a few people have no idea how to do that, especially the newer users that this kind of information would matter the most to (Someone new to trading online, kinda skeptical, wants to make sure they don't get scammed).

Yes, it's a lot of work. I've run forums before, something like that can be tedious. But on the other hand, the list is a VERY valuable tool that's been overlooked for months now. If it's too much for just one mod to keep up with, ask help from other mods. Maybe have someone or someones help out, with very limited access, just to keep that list updated on a weekly basis? Lets face it, I doubt we'll ever have the trader rating functionality that Bartertown has, so we have this list. It would be nice to see it maintained.

And one for the rest.

Noooooooooooo, don't do that. I wouldn't have discovered half of the new games and minis if I didn't actually stumble across them whilst browsing looking through GW rumours in the main thread. Separating 'other' rumours to another board would mean that a lot of people would miss out on discovering alternatives. I heavily agree. I'm a big time news poster so posting things like Sedition Wars where it can get a lot of exposure is almost a bit of a hobby of mine. Besides the Mods imo are VERY good at cleaning up all the redundant and misplaced topics so there isnt all that much "too many only GW/PP stuff".

I think a dedicated forum for those who want to complain about, praise, or say whatever about GW would be great. It could be called: "The GW thread: a place to beat ones head against the wall".
