It's back! This is your chance to show the rest of Dakka what you're made of!
Basic Challenge Rules: 1.) Abide by the spirit and guidelines of the Challenge theme presented below.
2.) Take a WIP shot of your model(s) before painting. Send your WIP along with your entry.
3.) Paint your model(s)!
4.) Take another shot of the completed model(s) and send it in to dakkapaintingchallenge@dakkadakka.com with your Dakka Handle as the photo's filename. Also be sure to include your dakka handle in the email, just in case. Oh and be sure it's in before 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5:00) the night of the Deadline!!
5.) The day after the deadline, all the entries will be presented for all of Dakka to see! Along with this will be a poll for the community at large to pick their favorite from the bunch.
6.) Public voting will last for 5 Days. The winner will then be announced a few days later, chosen from amongst the top 5 entries by a hand-picked panel of Dakka Painting Challenge judges.
Notes: The model(s) you enter can not be shown on Dakka or any other website, it's specifically for release in the Voting Poll. Models found to be posted prior to the Voting Poll will be disqualified. This does not claim publishing rights. Once the voting is over, feel free to post your model all over the web !
Please only send one WIP shot with your entry. If you decide to send more than one final painted shot, I will pick the best of them and post it alone. You may create a collage for the model(s) to show detail (back, front, close ups, etc.) and send it as your entry.
Administrator and Moderator entries will be marked with a "Team Dakka" watermark. Admin and Mod participants can't win prizes, but don't let that keep you from voting for them! Defeating one another is more than enough a reward...
Images: The pic of your model(s) must be either 1000x800 pixels or 800x1000 pixels . The voting is done blind, that way favoritism has nothing to do with who wins. No text, watermarks, or icons on the entry at all. File Names will be changed after I receive them. If having resizing issues photobucket provides decent editing tools.
Dakka Painting Challenge Presents: To INFINITY & Beyond!
This Dakka Painting Challenge points the spotlight at the game of Infinity. Infinity is a 28mm metal miniatures game that simulates combat and special operations in a science fiction environment with Manga aesthetics. Infinity miniatures are characterized by the high quality and detail of their modeling, the dynamism of their postures and their futuristic aesthetic...in other words, the perfect subjects for a Painting Challenge. If you've never looked at any Infinity miniatures before, or have always wanted a reason to paint one of these miniatures, this Challenge is perfect for you. Just take a look at some of the amazing official paint jobs from the Infinity website and prepare to get inspired (click the images to see larger versions of the pics):
The Deadline: Your entry picture (including your WIP pic) must be received by 5/13/12 11:59pm Eastern Time (GMT-5:00)
Challenge Theme Rules: • Absolutely any single miniature (and no more than that) produced by Corvus Belli for the game of Infinity.
• Conversions are allowed, so long as the model is primarily made up of Corvus Belli parts (feel free to ask questions if you're unsure).
• Bases must be complete. You can get as elaborate as you want with the base, but it must at least be flocked/painted or something similar.
The Prize: The sponsor for this challenge is none other than the actual company that makes Infinity: Corvus Belli. They've graciously offered the following amount of Infinity product, which you will be able to select from their site:
• First place prize will be €100 euros.
• Second place prize will be €65 euros.
• Third place prize will be €35 euros.
All shipping charges will be covered as well, so your prize will stretch a bit further!
A massive thanks goes out to Corvus Belli for their amazing support towards the Dakka community and if you haven't checked out the Infinity website or given the game a chance before, now's the time!
I've put in orders at both Maelstrom and GiftsforGeeks to make sure I get something delivered by the deadline. So whether I'm painting a Sophotect, Devas or Myrmidon may depend on what comes in on time!
Painted my first Infinity figure last night/this morning and they have so much more detail than GW's stuff it is amazing
Now, to decide what to enter...
(by the way, does a "WIP" picture of a sealed infinity blister count? I started painting without thinking and didn't get a WIP picture of the model itself...)

Just take the WIP pic right now.
As always, the whole point of the WIP pic is to make it a little harder for people to just swipe someone else's finished pic off the net somewhere and claim it as their own.

Kind of already finished painting (the model almost seemed to paint itself it was so nice to do)
Doesn't really matter - got a whole 300pt army of them through the post yesterday, so I will just paint up another one
This screen doesn't photograph at all well, so to check before my improvisation royally screws things up, would a photo in front of a sheet of paper including my username, the date and something I couldn't've had knowledge of prior to that date (read: "stock market opening prices") pass muster?
I took a photo of the model in front of my screen, but It's not exactly easy to read..... I already started painting it, though, so if it's not good enough nothing to be done as of now. I'll enter it, but I think I'm going to get disqualified....
Maaaan, now I wish I have Infinity models. They don't have those here. I can't order online since it'll take at least two months for them to get here. Bummer.
Hoping I can buy it locally from someone else's collection. I'd be happy to join a Dakka Painting Challenge again, and Infinity has really nice models I would love to paint up.
BlueDagger wrote:Ouch just looked into shipping rates to Manila to maybe give you a hand, but that is some painful shipping rates to get it there in time lol.
I know riiight. Appreciate the thought, though. I have been interested in playing Infinity for quite some time but there, it's not readily available.
Just got a great model! such a badass, only thing is his rifle is kinda out of place. it's ok though it will look nice laid up on the secret weapons base I got for it. first try in a contest and just registered with dakka. Lets do This!!
The beginning seems to hint that we're allowed to paint up multiple miniatures as a single collective entry.
Then the later part of the post seems to imply that you can only paint up a single model.
Which is it?
The beginning part of the rules aren't hinting that you are allowed to submit multiple models. Those are the general Dakka Painting Challenge rules so they are written to cover any kind of challenge (both those with multiple minis and those with only a single mini).
In this case, the challenge is to paint up a single Infinity model of your choice. You can always feel free to paint up a bunch of models to see which one comes out the best, but you can only submit a single model for your entry.
As for base size, you can feel free to go to town with whatever you want when it comes to the base, but keep in mind, again you are only submitting a single model. So you can't put a bunch of other models onto the base (except as casualties).
I will update the rules to make them even more clear.
Ah thanks for the rules clarification. I'm going to have to reconsider what I'm painting now.
I guess I could, as you said, just paint up the things I was planning on doing and post the 'best' one.
1) Is there a limit on what non-Infinity parts to use on the base? For example: using GW terrain bits, secret weapon resin bases, etc.
2) How about scratch-built parts on the conversions? For example: greenstuffed hair, plasticard weapons, etc.
3) How about printed illustrations for the bases? Movie posters, advertisements, to give just a few. All images will are not taken from anywhere else without permission of the makers of said images. Would that be alright?
heartserenade wrote:2) How about scratch-built parts on the conversions? For example: greenstuffed hair, plasticard weapons, etc.
If they're allowing the moderate use of parts from other manufacturers (it only has to be "primarily" CB parts), I can't see why they'd take offence to a degree of scratch work.
But if they do - shoot, that's me out of the running.
Me and my flatmate are both planning to enter this competition.
My flatmate was wondering: he has an unfinished model standing around, with a scratchbuilt base, and he posted a picture of that model, still unpainted, a few years back to show off the base itself.
Would he be allowed to paint up that model now and enter the competition with it?
Sorry for my absence everyone. I was caught up in Adepticon madness over the last week or so. I have responded to all emails. I will also start answering questions in this post.
Absolutionis wrote:So we can paint more than one model? Seems interesting.
One mini only.
Slarg232 wrote:So we can wait to put the last pic up ON 5/13? Or do we need that in the next couple of days?
Please send me the WIP and the final picture together. One email makes it much easier for me on the back end of the comp.
I will join too. Sadly some parts of my model were poorly casted, it took qute some time to fix...
But the rest is awesomely detailed and clean. looking forward to painting it.
Oh, I forgot to take a photo of the model's base. Can I just send a photo of the unpainted base (with an indication of the date on the background) and just montage it with the first photo of the unpainted model?

Whoops, painted my model in one session without doing a WiP... Will either photo the completed model as a WiP as I need to do a lot of touch ups anyways or paint a different one completely ^_^
Everyone, please stop sending WIPs by themselves. The only thing you should be sending to the email address is.
1. Any inquiries you may have. (Although I prefer you send inquiries to my pm box here)
2. One single email containing a picture of your WIP, and a picture of your final entry.
We have a lot of interest in this contest. Sending separate WIPs and final entries is not necessary, and actually makes more work. Please make sure to follow these rules.

Oh sorry I have not understood that it should be WIP AND final photo in one email...
i keep painting... the end of contest is approaching...

I'm entering myself in this contest too. I already have my WIP picture. Once I finish it I have to send it to that mail specifying my nick here in the forum, right?

Working hard on it!
Sorry, I see you're not a native english speaker, but had to mention that the part in bold made me lol And to be a little helpful while I'm at it - Yes, a mail with the finished mini, the WIP and your forum nick is needed.
I've had my model sitting on my desk staring at me for quite a while now, maybe I should start painting it..... well, there are still five days left.....
Wow. I have 14 entries up to this point. Good to see so many interested members.
If you have already sent me a picture, please check your email. Some of you left out what the specific model is. I am not very familiar with Infinity, and want to make sure all entries are properly identified.
Even if I'm not participating this time, i'm still exited about the entries. Soon the waiting to see them it's over. I wish all participants good luck!

Thought that my entry had been disqualified (possibly for being pants) when I saw I had an email
i' ve sent mine but haven't shoot the photo with the dakkadakka background (in the first post there wasn't this thing :\ )... By the way i have 20-25 wip progress (during the painting process, adding something every time) that i can send.
I hope there will be no problem, really did hard work on it :\
i hope i will receive lots of advice in order to improve painting style.
This is a really good thing because the game needs to be more known
Everything I have received so far is good. No worries from anyone. I am currently caught up, so if you sent anything up to this point it is already qualified and processed.
Hehe, fortunately I'm done, but Aura has decided to join the game, but she only started yesterday. Just wanted that confirmation.. She'll be finished sometime tomorrow, but wanted to know where the line exactly was.
As much as it is good that plenty of people taking part and Infinity is spreading, I feel my dreams of being in with a chance of winning something are slipping further from my grasp with every entry
With 20 entries (and the skill of some of the contestants), I'm wondering whether it's actually worth trying to get in my own. I had some real life problems last week that took away painting time, so now I'd have to paint at less than my best to be done on time (hence detrimentally affecting my chances of winning and the model's overall quality).
Might have to withdraw simply due to it being plain daft to muck up the model for the sake of a very slim chance of winning.

My painting skillz are not exactly top notch, so there will only be 19 other entries to compete against - and you have to remember the saying: "Enter it, and they will come"... or something
Better to have tried and not won than never tried at all.
The thing to understand is how often I've rushed models to meet deadlines, got mediocre results and ended up having to totally redo them afterwards. I've mostly learnt from that now, and it's improved my work dramatically.
The poor chance I'd have at winning any of the prizes if I rushed to meet the deadline hardly seems worth it, particularly as I'd have to redo it again afterwards and have other things that could use the time.
Just paint it up and if you get it done in time, enter! Either way, you will have to paint it up eventually, so you may as well start now and maybe have a chance of winning some Infinity stuff if you get it done in time
I've already started - but I can safely say that with less than a day and a half to get the rest done, my normal technique will not present a finished result in time, and my rushed technique will produce a mediocre result that I'd have to redo. As the mediocre result won't be enough to win any prizes (and if it were, then I'd have to decline in disgust at how badly some of the other entrants had shamed themselves), what's the point in rushing, ruining it and having to start over?
I've spent too much time converting so i'm not going to be able to finish but i can get all my colours down without adding any freehand or anything special. My painting isn't good anyway but maybe thats the best way to go about things if you haven't got enough time?
Just do enough to have a 'finished' model even if you aren't actually finished.
@MarcoSkoll: Well, no one can force you to enter - and less entries means less competition for the rest of us. Your reasons all seem perfectly valid, especially if you don't plan on entering a competition in the future.
@Everyone considering whether to eneter or not at this stage:
I think entering will not only allow you to compare your effort, no matter how unhappy you are with it, with the other entries - (which I guess you can do without entering) - but also see others opinion about how it places as well.
If nothing else - this gives you a placement goal to beat next time! I'm not expecting to place better this time around (I'd have to win!), but I'll be happy with placing higher than heartserenade (Nothing like a bit of friendly competition...). Regardless, I hope to have a goal to beat for next time (more likely given the number of entries...)
It may help with motivation to do better next time too...
I think you can't under-estimate the value in photographing and presenting your model either. I don't think my painting has improved since the last time - but hopefully my photography and presentation has!
Anyway - to those that have entered and eventually do - I wish you all good luck and I am looking forward to seeing all of your entries!
My main motivation (aside from winning the contest ) is beating my brother, who thinks he's a better painter than me. Ha! The delusive fool
Na, I actually think our entries are both equally good (or bad). We've agreed to (in case one of us wins anything) share the money and start two forces. Would be kinda stupid not to share it, as there would be no opponent to play against.....
Here's a tip straight from the Eavy Metal team. When you're rushed for time, only paint the parts that face the camera. You can go back and do the other bits later
...you think I'm joking... but there really are some models that do only ever see a full paint job on the front! I can't remember what unit it was they demonstrated that on; Arakasi might remember

I considered this sneaky trick during the duel-competition a few moths back, but I hope the pics of that entry prove I pained all sides after all
SilverMk2, you make me laugh with each one of your posts
Well, mine is almost finished after a frenzied evening of painting! How good will it be after just a few hours work? Well I think the old adage of 'you reap what you sow' applies here
Once again: Is there no chance at all of a 'wooden spoon' award? Even if it's just a copy of 'how to paint miniatures' or one of the plastic space marines from the 2nd edition boxset?
Just got back from my sister's wedding. Sent my entry before the rehearsal and all is good.

I'll definitely need luck this time around. I've been stalking the galleries of those who entered (oh, you sneaky sneaky heartserenade!) and a lot of them are really, really good. Not counting you, who's also crazy good.
Right now I'm looping Queen's "Princes of the Universe" to psych myself up an assure me that my entry is fine. Thank God we have Queen and 80s feel-good music.

I hope no-one stoops to this trick, but I found it amusing that GW does it for their promo material

I wouldn't be providing any competition, not for the prizes anyway. I've entered painting competitions before - I've even won one of them - but what it's taught me is that while my best efforts can be competition worthy, my rushed efforts are not.

There is a type of model figure called a flat, which amazingly (or perhaps not) is flat.

Actually they have some relief not being 2 dimensional.
I painted a lot of them when I was a kid. "40mm-half round": big in swedish 80s! You could mould them yourself, cheap and funny. I still have the moulds in a box somewhere. Mine were swedish 1700-historical soldiers.
People, please identify the miniatures that you used in this competition. There's a ton of entries that are missing one of the three requirements. Please check your email boxes and respond to any questions I may ask in the email.
DancingRonin wrote:Haven't received any confirmation was my entry received ?
Yup. Sorry if I missed sending a confirmation. Everyone except for one entrant is good as far as their pictures are concerned. The one entrant who needs to correct a file has both a pm and an email awaiting his reply.
"Last moment?" I haven't sent mine in yet (waiting for one bit to dry so I can add another colour, can't use a hairdryer since the rest of the house is asleep). I have to be up for work in about 4 hours too.
I wasn't going to participate his round but I buckled and got my models on Friday. I just sent in my entry. Good luck to everyone and looking forward to seeing everyone's work.
