I've been wanting to scratchbuild something for a while, but I always give up long before it gets to cutting any plasticard.
After looking at the centaur and deciding the forgeworld price was far more than i was willing to pay, I decided it looks like a simple enough model to scratchbuild, so I got a template and made a start.
I decided to enclose the driver area and Im going to green stuff a top on as its easier to get the lines I was planning.
I was thinking of only making a small section of track and instamolding it, seems the easiest way to go.
Erm, ill have to measure it and check. Ive got 3 different thickness on there.
Did some more work on it tonight. The exterior detail went better than i thought. The only problem is you learn along the way, so the second side always looks better than the first.
Im waiting for the greenstuff tracks to dry to see how they come out.
with a russ as reference.
I got one of my parts orders, so did some more work on the cetaur. Despite my calculations, i somehow ended up two track links short.
Its made from a combination of 2mm, 1mm and i beleive its 1/4mm plasticard.
The third image shows a couple of parts from my next project. Waiting for the next supply drop before that can start in earnest
This is very inspiring work and it looks like that you are getting ready build a super heavy tank . Please post more of your future work I would love to see it .
So the foamboard came today, so the superstructure is under way. Still waiting for a delivery from imperial armoury for the details though
wide enough for a leman russ in the hold.
It was originally going to be long enough for 2 tanks and forsaking the gun for a front ramp. I decided that the longer tracks could be a pain, so its still big enough for a single tank and I plan on putting a bombard cannon in the front.

Good!
and prepare to see FW copy your concepts to make a new centaur patter. ones that uses standard IG tank tracks.
montrano wrote:I never liked the idea of all the tedious riveting following your thread, but you do fall into a bizarre therapeutic riveting rythym
dave said it already but you have alone found out the true meaning of rivet- zen!!! yes! it is a strong thing to happen to you all of a sudden... but once you start it gets you line, hook and sinker...
the leviathan is looking very good! did i overread as to how you rivetted the plates? looks as if you embossed them? very neat work if i say so myself^^
now i am really looking forward to see you make some scratchbuilt treads... something i might need to nick then ^^
good luck with the further work on that behemoth of a tank!
Thanks guys. Much better than the comments I at home, which mostly consist of, "where exacty do you plan on putting that" and "didnt you say you had an assignment to do".
true...tho i can´t say who it is but i have seen his work here too... and yeah i think without the right gear you could end up insane by making the treads all by yourself... which does happen^^
well... my wife sometimes complains too about me using up all available shelf place and even the bigger tables at home^^ devotion to hobby is nothing to be taken lightly
I keep toying with the idea of making articulated tracks, but I'm not sure I need any extra complication. I've got 4 assignments due before download festival and an exam 2 days after, I guess I do work better under pressure.
Speaking of guns, I was going to have a bombard in the front and the 3 twin lascannons on each side, but I'm not sure about the turret on top, I'm not sure it looks right. What do people think about it.
Awesome Vehicles! Membership calibre if I've ever seen it!
I don't know much about the rules for such a monstrosity, but more Dakka is always better. The large flat area in the back, is that a landing pad? Where would the top turret go? On top ot the bridge area? I would have to see a mock-up of the turret to form an opinion.
i think you are cpable to make up your own turret... use whatever you have at hand for this... with this embossed rivet look you get away with so much...
Well that is quite an honour, are you sure Im worthy. Ive never been part of a league before, a society, but never a league.
Ill get round to doing a mock up of the turret on top, probably something around the size of a leman russ turret. It'd have to be off centre though to allow for the access ladder on the bridge, unless of course i put 2 on the roof.
Automatically Appended Next Post: The observation area is done, I have put treadplate down, but i took the picture first
I changed the layout of the lascannons from the epic model to increase the fire arcs for the weapons.
Ive made a couple of track links to see how feasible it is. I made a mold using instantmold stuff to see how well they come out, we might have scratchbuilt tracks yet
the GS made window sills looks wrong... i´d pull the GS off and make everything with plasticcard i was you... that way you get way betterlooking straight lines...
the GW bitz you added make it look very posh! good choice!
and yep... for joining the league...just add the banner in your sig and you can boast around^^
So, the random banter has once again infested another thread.
Excellent!
montrano - I like the Balcony railing and the ladder, but I agree the front windows and the frame are lacking. I like what your doing for the Las Cannons though!
The randomness is what i love about dakka.
Ive got a couple of mock up pictures of the roof turret to post, but £ night at the pub has made it far too dificult to post them. Although I'll try, ill see if my phone will play nice, and if the girlfriend will make me toast.
Today I was mostly putting together a malcador defender, which just fits in the leviathan.
I do intend to add a plasticard sill around the windows. I added to greenstuff partly so there wasnt a large gap between the sill an the window and partly because the acrylic for the window refused to refused to attach with any glue i own, so a greenstuff seal keeps it in
Automatically Appended Next Post: centred
and off centre
Im going with off centre at the moment
These are the fiddly detail bits....It may seem like you aren't getting anywhere, but time spent here is what will put this project over the epic-peak!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Vik is right..there are no shortcuts that you will be happy with.
Being the least organised person in the world is slowing things down too. Every time i go to use something I have to dig through the pile of stuff to find it.
I finally found something the right size for the track wheels though and I ordered the ebay tracks as although mine were ok, replicating the 60 or so track link, even with instamold, was going to take forever.
I was planning on detailing all 3 floors, the bottom is mostly empty, but the bombard goes at the front with racks of shells.
The 2nd floor was going to be just a floor of seating, so Im contemplating skipping it, but i'll see how it goes.
Great to see such a full-on scratch build with foamcore! I got back in to the hobby by scratch building a mars-pattern baneblade. For the riveting, I tapped a blunted nail through thin plasticard at regular intervals: gives you a double-whammy of armour plating and rivets. Just a thought. Grand job thus far, though, and love your interior work!
@Graven - I totally dig the punched riveting idea!! I think that method is very underutilized. I have been wanting to get one of those wheel tools that you just roll and it makes the perfect pattern.
Really...I don't like marines because my guard can't use their stuff, but marines can use a baneblade?? WTF?? They wouldn't even fit in the crew compartment!! -That is why I am all butt-hurt about marines
dsteingass wrote:Really...I don't like marines because my guard can't use their stuff, but marines can use a baneblade?? WTF?? They wouldn't even fit in the crew compartment!! -That is why I am all butt-hurt about marines
ok this is crap, i agree.. they can take our large tanks but we cant even take one of their tiny landspeeders!?!?! or any of their tanks!?!? if you ask me its BULL gak!
hell yea! dosent gw know how cool IG look in a landspeeder!! and imagion a leagion of landraders, baneblades, and leman russ' coming into the thick of battle!
Automatically Appended Next Post: and i saw that new 40kSM helicopter... if IG dosent get another flyer when this wave hits.. im going to be pissed!
Back in Rogue Trader and Second Edition, Imperial Armies used a standard pool of vehicles. Only until the army "Codexes" came our, did you start seeing the 'limits'. Heck, IG used to have speeders and jetbikes, Allies did all sorts of things, etc.
But, then again, those were the days where you'd field 20-25 marines and a couple of vehicles...and a Land Raider on the table was like a Baneblade, today.
hey if we are both under the pay roll of the same guy, why cant we use simillar gear?? i understand some stuff, like i wont ask for IG jumpacks, or droppods, but landspeeders i dont see why we cant get those
Ig jumppacks you say, now that's an idea I like.
Erm, I'm not at home, but if I remember rightly the main body is 21cm high and maybe 26cm long.
I didn't use a template or even scale the original, I copied the shape of the epic model, then sized it based on what I wanted.it to carry. The tank bay will hold a chimera or Russ as well as the the bombard cannon on the front. The crew floor, which I'm not sure if I'm going to model yet, should have rows of seats.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Unless you mean templates for the centaur. In which case I used one by I think its Eli patoroch. I used it for the body size and shape, then used the reference pictures from the forgeworld page
if it was with, than i would make it not as wide, right now it reminds me of the one from the barret 50cal , but i also like it without .. and i definatly like the avatar.... might i ask what it is?
I like the muzzle brake...but I agree it is too wide. -Mounted on the beast, it would definately have some sort of recoil system the standard Russ would not get, just so it didn't tear itself from it's own mount...
That was my thinking. Thats why theres no hatches or anything on the turret, cant imagine someone wanting to poke there head out of a hatch 50 foot up.
I havent done anything in a modelling sense for a couple of days, Ive tried to avoid even looking at dakka, it draws me in.
The extensive list of things i need to do before a week of drinking in a field doesnt stop growing.
The tracks shoud arrive tomorrow hopefully and ive ordered some vallejo air paints. I only hear good things about them and the main reason i dont use the airbrush is i cant seem to get a consistent finish with watered down GW paint

Hmmm I think that the GW Baneblade has a suitable Muzzlebrake bit. Brian is that the kit? I think you used one on a Bassie to pizazz it up.
I found what i was thinking of, its the muzzle brake on a howitzer. Still too wide, but thats easily remedied.
I also actually looked at the long list of assignments due before download festival and its only a fraction of what i thought. More time for building then
Not done much on the leviathan recently, caught up on some assignments and sorted the next batch of homebrew. Then the post arrived with the vallejo air paint, so i thought i'd try the airbrush again and maybe have a go at salt weathering.
I overdid it on the salt a bit, but the airbrush was lovely to use with the right paint. It sprayed evenly with consistent colour and i think i'll invest in some more colours.
Finally got to catch up and see the great work on the Centaur and the Leviathan, two ends of the vehicle spectrum! You definitely earned your place in the =L=. Good show!
Still not much to report, been busy finishing the last bits of uni work before I go away, were leaving on Sunday now and going to Nottingham for a few days before the festival. Anyone here from that way got any suggestions of where to drink, preferably of the belgian persuasion.
On a modelling note however, the track links have arrived, so expect some progress
^ your missing one thing, it goes by many names, female being one, biddy being another... but some... some call the mythical creature the wench of pleasure
Girlfriends can be a useful bunch. Mines painting a bloodspatter patern on her nails right now.
Lounging in the sun has taken priority the last few days, but I fixed the muzzle brake
and built a couple of turrets. I decided the big one was too big, so built the smaller one, which I prefer
I had a nice email the other day from the guy I bought the tracks from, he offered some free part in exchange for using pictures of my project for promotion. After a couple of emails, he offered to cast me some copies of my scratchbuilt turret if he can retain the copyright and sell it.
Now, I really must get on with an assignment, something to do with the link between smoking and hearing loss, due in 13 hours time. I acquired a tyranid harridan this morning too, which has been calling me to build it all day.
smoking causes loss of hearing...? really? hmmm good deal i don´t smoke at all then...
and the turrets look very godd indeed... so getting them casted is a good deed...if it is the same guy i have in mind his tracks are very good looking indeed... and with your work then i bet it helps him boost his sales!! good luck mate!
a different angled pic of the muzzle would have been nice tho...not much to be seen there atm...
i´d add a bit to the vents on each side of those holes tho... still makeing only three holes each side but not so wide... but the look is very good indeed!
I work better under pressure, well, I only work under pressure.
totally second that! ask my wife... my teachers, my bosses^^
The muzzlebreak look better. I secons what vik said about the vents.
Also imo, the turret itself on the roof looks abit to small :/ atleast if it's ment to have such a big barrel.
heh funny thought just appeared in my mind.. it would look really cool with a big big turret with 2 barrels like the one you've just made. like a battleship turret!
Could you provide a link to the tank treads you are using? I am building a couple super heavy tanks and the treads is the only part I haven't squared away yet. I was going to build a master and then make my own mold and cast it in resin. But ordering some would probably be easier right now, I am staring at PDF plans for titans, tanks, drop pods, and buildings all sitting on my desk saying "build me build me!" anything I can do to cut a few corners would be great.
Yeah, its an ebay seller, he might have aa webstore admittedly, but ebay is alwaays my first port of call.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251057068476?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Hes got a few different tracks in various sizes
Ive done a few bits and pieces, I stacked it all together with another tank for scale.
The last few days has mostly been finishing coursework and putting together this pile.
Typically, it started raining today and its meant to go on the entire time Im in a tent, good old england.
It is. Several pints of black Dragon cider so far, its tasty, but not Belgian beer.
I'm being moaned at for checking dakka in a pub.
I'm trying to.convince my non wargaming friends to take me to warhammer world while were here

It's sweet, but not overpoweringly so, with a little sharpness. And its cask conditioned in oak barrels. So has a mild oaky taste. I'll just check the sixth pint to see if its the same
montrano wrote:It's sweet, but not overpoweringly so, with a little sharpness. And its cask conditioned in oak barrels. So has a mild oaky taste. I'll just check the sixth pint to see if its the same
one might never know... after all the taste might differ after the sixth...^^
and this sounds interesting... tho i am for real more a guinness or something on that line drinker... i like the creamy taste of that one... but cider has grown on me...
Well I have 45 litres of cider, 2 litres of Russian vodka, litre of rum and half a bottle of refreshers, black jack, fruit salad and jelly baby vodka to test too.
I've always been a cider drinker, until we went to belgium and discovered Belgian beer. Unfortunately Victor, I've never liked German beer, all I've tried tastes like burnt toast. German sausage however is a different story

Well stop typing get drinking after all it wont drink itself
you don´t have to excuse for the german beer... i wont drink that too^^... and is it any wonder that most beer in germany is pilsner? (that is named after czech city^^)
and Kölsch and bayuvarian beer specially tastes like horse leakings anyway^^
and that sounds like you have more like a bathtube full of booze to drink through
I am still alive in case anyone wondered. The extreme rain, mud, wind and then sun whilst camping didnt phase me.
In the week I've been back however, we've been to the vets with 2 different pets, had an escaped hamster, who has since been recaptured, had an exam, then my mum broke her wrist.
Theyre all so inconsiderate, all I want to do is build stuff.
Normal service to be resumed soon.
I also found some of my old college friends have got into 40k recently, so I might end up playing a game for the first time in about 10 years
Just found this thread thanks to dstein posting the LoER links. Sorry it took me so long to get here, and I'm sorry I missed out on the previous awesomeness. Your skill is impressive to say the least, and your attention to detail is simply staggering. How many rivets have you cut / glued so far? Amazing work!
Dude really... staggering work. I read that you've got some stuff going on, hoping all is working out.

In order.
Welcome Back.
Vet trips equal suck. (I still miss our departed pets anyway though)
Mums injury, Suck.
restoration of service, Sweet.
Old friends starting 40k... 6th is the perfect time to do so.
Apologies for my apparent lack of existence. End of uni year and summer schools. The only good thing about spending 2 weeks over summer in the lab is its at nottingham uni, which means a nice trip to gwhq. They randomly had a rhino outside this year
I have done a few bits to the leviathan, which is finally shaping up.
Ive spent the last week or so rebuilding the shed, im finally allowed to convert half of it into a secret lab/workshop
After another extended period of disapperance, I have now moved half way across the country, but finished exams and the like for the year.
The leviathan had to stay behind at the parents due to lack of space on the move, so is on hold until I go get it.
While I was meant to be revising, I got all creative and felt the urge to build something, so i started the generic thunderhawk
I need to get some new glue to get any more work done on that, and with an untouched dark vengeance box sitting on the side, I thought id have a look in there.
Until now I had no chaos, so i thought i'd take the opportunity to try some new chaosy techniques. I nurgled up the helbrute (to the best of my limited experience anyway) and am working on building a whole set of interchangeable weapons.
yep, the base is foamboard and skinned with plasticard now.
Thanks, chaos is new to me. I think ive managed to build every weapons option apart from 2 power fists.
you'll like my next project then. I've just sold off my guard army, i've got far too many armies and the thought of painting the tons of infantry is really offputting. I do like tanks however, so im planning on building an armoured battlegroup with the cash
i wasnt expecting such a negative response. Surely its an upgrade, countless infantry for 12 or so leman russ. Its mostly the 80 or so undercoated guardsmen that i cant find the motivation to paint makes me want to trade them for tanks.
As a further insult, i was considering selling the ork army too, but ive got the grot tanks ive never got round to using yet, and i think they might be fun
Should i be expecting the inquisition at the door for heresy
Yup, 12 tanks will provide you with lots of building opportunities, and I can completely understand why you find the prospect of painting 80 guys all the in the same uniform so daunting. I keep forgetting what it was like to only paint for a few hours a week.....
I have most of an entire Guard army in the closet. I'm having issues painting right now, but I've always wanted to get back to them. They are the most daunting army I have though.
Invest in some Army Painter spray primer is your base army colour. It'll cut painting time in half. I managed to paint 1500pts of Imperial Guard in a month spending just two hours a day on them: my lunchbreak and an hour after work. Still for fairly good results:
