Hey guys was thinking earlier about what got me into painting GW miniatures in the first place, looking back its amazing how cheaply i got my first models.

I cant remember how much i paid exactly but i know i got my first models from a table-top sale that we did when i was in scouts, it was a ready painted space hulk set and i managed to really mess it up painting them, with thick enamel paints i recently found the space marines and was amazed at how poorly they had been painted.

So my question is this what first got you into painting???

Edit: also if you have any pics of your first model feel free to post them, would love to see some early paintjobs

My first model i've bought was a BIG boxset of Cadian shock troops. enough to assemble 2 infantry squads.

A small plastic blister of 4 Orks.

First model was an XV8 Crisis suit given to me by a friend. My first purchase was a Squad of Fire Warriors.

My first were some of the plastic RT beaky Marines, but it's so long ago I barely remember them. I painted them silver and gold.

A snakebite boar boy, I think. One of the 2nd edition things that never made it into 3rd.

A couple blisters of Harlequin Miniatures Lizardmen.

At least I think they were Harlequin, this was way back in '90.

My first miniature was a Reaper Miniatures orc with an axe and shield that I used for my half-orc Barbarian in a 3rd edition D&D campaign.

My first was the SM captain box

I threw him away a few years ago cause I tried to strip him but the plastic got wierd.

Old metal terminators, painted Ultramarines just like the box cover. This was back in 1996. I didn't know a darn thing about the game except what I'd seen playing Space Hulk on my friend's computer.

The thing I remember most from that game was hearing "The Emperor has dictated your weaponry" and then getting stuck with all stormbolters and power fists when what you really wanted was a whole squad of lightning claws. We kept saying "Who the heck is the Emperor and why is he deciding our weapons? Screw that guy!"

An AoBR set

Too long ago to remember('81 or '82 maybe)' but it was most likely a Citadel elf, and back then they were 3 for a pound, halflings cheaper.

40k? Asmodai. Other than that, it wss a crapton of Epic minis.

First I got was the 2nd edition box set, but the first i ever painted was an orc from the Battle Masters game.

Oh yes I remember that, hopeless. When offered I would often take whole teams with the Lightning Claws. Never take the power glove, when you do get to choose the weapons always take the power sword.

The first models I bought was a box of 5th edition Chaos Warriors. I thought they were the coolest looking things I'd ever seen. Luckily they were pretty easy to paint.

The Space Crusade game. Got me hooked.

All the bad guys were on one side. You got stealers, orks, grots, chaos marines, androids (?Necrons) and an Ed-209 style dreadnought, all gribbling the marines.

First sole mini was the first lightning clawed terminator. Loved the look of it.

Woah can honestly say i did not expect this kind of reaction to such a simple question, great to see we all have such fond memories of our initial purchases.

Squad of metal cadian shock troopers, well just a blister with 3 of them. Still use them today

8 years ago I bought a Eldar Jetbike. Letting an 8 year old kid loose with paints and a mini was never a very good idea. It looked more like I had attacked it than painted it...

An old squad of Chaos space marines.

My 1st was a 2nd Ed. Dark Eldar that I got free from a painting introduction, the manager (who I knew) virtually painted it for me while I did little bits but at 9yrs old I was over the moon!

These fellas.

The first mini I ever bought was with my grandma (I was a grot) in this underground (literally under the earth - you had to go down a flight of stairs at street level to get to) role-playing game shop. 40k wasn't even in Rogue Trader stages then. It was some Ral Partha lead armored pikemen (because I didn't even play D&D then) that I thought were really cool. The shafts of their pikes weren't even lead they were a thick gage wire. When I painted them I didn't even know about primering, nor would I find out for about 10 more years. There were some Julie Guthrie dragons from Grenadier in those early days too, I think I had red, black, bue, and green....never white though...and no Tiamat.

My first 40k model was a hard plastic box of "eldar troopers". Like 10 for $15 or 15 for $20. Lead back then, shuriken catapults and melta guns, underbarrel chainsaws (CCWs).

Fond memories.

My first model was a tactical marine. I painted them with uber gunky thick paint from Folk Art and didn't know enough to water it down. It was terrible, but it worked and I got better from there.

Necron Battleforce. Well-painted, drybrushed chainmail with green shoulderpads.

My first gaming mini was a Leman Russ Mark VII Battletank. My friend had one for his Imperial Guard army and I, being a treadhead, thought it was pretty cool looking and practical looking (compared to most sci-fi tanks).

Once I decided to start my armored company, I painted it entirely burnished gold - it was my command tank after all!

Fortunately I am saner now and it remains with the army, albeit demoted to Tank 121 rather than 100.

Ork Warboss for 3rd edition. Probably also bought a box of boys or the old battleforce at the same time.

The AOBR box, a khorne berzerker box, a chaos battle force, and a chaos renegade strike force, all of it was my very first purchase and my descent into the seedy underworld of plastic crack addiction.

My first models ever was the Schaffer's Last Chancers box set for a birthday present. I got the old(then current) Catachan battleforce(2x Sentinels, 1x Set Jungle Trees 20x Catachan Jungle Fighters 3x Heavy Weapon Teams) soon after.

We were moving in 1992 or 93, and we were staying in a hotel...my mom bought my Brother and I SPACE CRUSADE...which still is possibly the most awesome game ive played from GW...I saw the genestealers in the box, and I was hooked forever. Still have the original box too, and my first painted figs....now I have to go dig them out and look at them

For 40k, me too; way back in '87.

It was the Epic 40k box set from GW model though the first I assembled was an Airfix Spitfire like I'm guessing 90% of the British members of this forum!

My first ever gaming specific model was the release of the Space Marine battle company to commemorate the release of apocalypse reloaded in 2008. Along with that, i bought the termie chaplain, 2 temie squads (1 of each type), and 2 LRC kits...some of that stuff still isnt done to this day

I actually started buying up Battlefleet Gothic before I started up with 40K. My first purchases were a squad of hormagaunts and termagaunts and a box of three warriors. This was back in 4th edition, when Tyranids could use Warriors as HQ choices. I was somewhat decent in my first paintjobs, but I would slather on chaos black for the primer instead of spray-painting it.

My first minis were some crappy ral partha D&D character minis. Not that memorable.

Now the first paints I bought with those models THEY were memorable. They were citadel paints in the bottle that everyone refers to as superior, the old school locking flip cap ones. I remember spilling the Brown Ink everywhere trying to get them open and hating that my infantile digits did not possess the strength to manipulate the caps easily.

Nostalgia moment..... though it was only two years ago that I got my first box of boys and these beautiful metal kommandoz for my birthday. Oh, the horrible twenty minute paintjobs I gave them....

But my first mini ever was an ork boy four years ago in the Stockholm GW. I actually painted him quite nicely, better than my birthday ones!

My first purchase was half the Aobr box from a good friend in sweden a few days after my birthday (he was the one who told my parents to buy minis for my birthday!)

My first models would be in the Space Hulk game.

Following that I bought a Citadel paint set which came with a Space Marine and Warhammer Fantasy Warrior of Chaos.

I purchased about 3 sets worth of Orks from the 2nd Edition set. The first individual model that I remember buying was an old Rogue Trader Nob that served as my Warboss. Or it may have been the Griffon IG tank, that I used in the Ork army, since they could actually use Imperial vehicles back in the day.

Next up was a twin baracuda. Still have those guys.

My first models were those little 8 figures per box Warhammer models used to come in. I bought one box of Warriors and Beastmen of Chaos and two Khorne Champions.

Which I promptly painted with Tester paints *facepalm*

First 40k model was a blister of three "space marines" with the wierd looking bladed rifle things.


Marine firing, marine advancing, marine guard from that set.
They got melted down for my other casting endeavours back in the early 90s because they were poxy sculpts at the best of times.

The 20 Dark Eldar Warriors from the 3rd Ed Starter. Had the whole mob cut, glued, and painted in about 2 hours. Ugh, they were horrible, now I'm lucky to paint a single mini in that time.

An AoBR set. FIrst mini I painted was a Big Mek I converted from one of the Nobz in the set, to whom I gave a SAG.

I remember the day i bought them.

I went to a local Warhammer focused store with a friend who played. I ended up buying the CSMs, the CSM codex, And the first 2 horus heresy books. My friend got himself the entire ultramarines book series. Directly after leaving the store, we went down to Durban (a popular holiday Coastal city, for those who dont know) and stayed there with my parents. He would be chilling and playing on his DS or my xbox, while i would spend most of the time pouring over my codex and his rulebook, looking at the pictures of models, deciding on the paint scheme, reading the fluff, basically loosing myself in the world of 40k. I even got Red Dead Redemption and ALan Wake while we were there, and barely played them, because i was spending all my time on the 40k stuff i had bought, like looking at my sprues, deciding what i was gonna do, and pouring over the books i got.


TL;DR I have very fond memories of starting 40k.

Whatever IG Character effects conscripts, I proceeded to butcher the model with my 5th grade painting skills!

3rd edition starter set. I remember painting my marines dark angel colors....or Just green.

This was definitely like my second miniature! I thought those guns on his hand were awesome looking.

First thing that I bought was the old Imperial Guard battleforce. Great deal, 20 dudes, Leman Russ, and 3 heavy weapons teams for $90 if I recall correctly. I can't remember the first "individual" model I bought however, although I believe it was an Avatar of Khaine.

yeah ok not including the spitfire lol
actually have a spitfire sat on my desk waiting to be built gotta say the qaulity is appaling

The first wargame miniatures I picked up were the big black box, the old metal command squad, a paint starter set, and a tactical squad. Oddly enough between when I bought them and when I went to assemble them the tac squad vanished but left their box behind...

oh and here is one of those models from the space hulk set i was so proud of my painting at the time (think i was suffering from temporary insanity)

Grenadier and Ral Partha RPG monsters, and some heroes, back in the late 70s early 80's...

No longer have them, and remember using them so much that the detail from the metal got rubbed off ...

Those are from the 2nd edition starter box. I still got a heap of them laying around somewhere =o]

My first model was probably some kind of tank or airplane, possibly airfix . My first mini's where some Ral Partha lead AD&D models. My first citadel models where the Space Marine Librarians with force sword and book, FS and scroll and the two handed FS. I thought armour,books and swords how can I go wrong. I quickly picked up some Techmarines after this, then the RTB01 box, then the compendium so I actually knew what I was doing.... by then GW had me hooked hardcore. Then I discovered epic and all was right in the world. =o]

For me it was a second ed box of the Mordian Iron Guard Squad.

Still have the army too

My first model purchase was a box of Necron warriors. They're long gone now though.

My first model I bought was a model car, so yea. Wargaming wise, the first thing i got was the tau battleforce.

The first GW model I ever bought was the Deathwing Terminator set. I can only guess where. The second was the Blood Angels Devastator box from NCC-1701 in Orlando FL in 1994. I found out there was a game attached to these models in 1996.

First GW Miniature was either 4th Edition WHFB Prince Imrik or Eltharion on Griffon.
Don't know really, but still have both but they need paint stripping badly

Not counting Space Crusade and old Airfix models, the first GW things I bought were in March 1992. I remember getting White Dwarf 147 and it having 25% discount vouchers in it. So off I toddle to my nearest GW and I picked up Space Hulk 1st Edition for £21.99. Next week, my first real model purchases were, in order:

- An Epic Shadowsword
- An Epic Warlord (The store had a returned defective box of the ancient plastic battle titans box - they were flogging off the good bits and I snaffled a warlord with a weapon sprue for £1.50)!

And there started my long obsession with Epic! They have all been lost to the ages in one form or other however :/

I thought the Death Jester looked really awesome. I had no idea what the army did. The person who taught me to play cheated their head off. I never realized how nasty Eldar were until I went to a Games Workshop on South Street in Philadelphia to learn how to play. My parents would only take me once in a while because they could not stomach how they used to play heavy metal music and thought it would be a bad influence.

Maybe it was.. 20 years later i'm still pushing around plastic and metal minatures and I love heavy metal music

A Marine tactical Squad. I have stripped them of paint so many times that I mostly see them as black (primed ) But now on the Red Scorpions colours they seem nice

First GW minis were a box of beakies.

First overall were the classic Grenadier AD&D "Explorers" box set. Still have it.

Mine was a Ral Partha model from their Shadowrun range. It was in late 92 or early 93.
I was only painting (and I was miserable at it) and GW minis were too already too expensive

Thanks guess they must have been mixed in, i wish i still had some of the tyranids from that boxset but only the emporer knows what happened to them

For 40k, it was either a blister pack with a standard and melta marine or the 2nd edition box set.

For miniatures in general, it was definitely a box of 1/72 scale plastic British commando's by ESCI.

For non-40k, my memory is foggier, but I think my first gaming miniatures would be Battletech's Heavy Lance. Whichever one had a Crusader and a Thunderbolt.

The first model I got was one of these with my own pocket money Used to love the old box art



Then a few months later I got Space Marine for Christmas



Although I was only 7 at the time so had to rely on my big brother to help out with the rules.

Necron Lord

25 Cadians, 3 HWTs, 3 Psykers, an odd Ogryn and a hellhound for $60 from a friend who wanted to get rid of them... after I got into the hobby, I realized the deal I had made

First models were Battle for Maccragge models.

Started painting the Sergeant as an ultramarine, realized blue was lame, and made up my own chapter. I still have the sergeant. Just a little bit of blue showing up in the cracks and crevasses.

Space Marine Bike and the small 3 man Space Marine kit at the same time.

Old Dwarf Warriors, when they came in boxes of 8 without all these "options" you have nowadays. Think it was 1997 or thereabouts.

My first mini's were a blister of crossbowmen. There were 4-5 of them, they looked a littlebit renaisance (however it's spelt) and had plastic crossbows that you had to glue in place, thinking about it they may have been empire , but probably more likely dungeons and dragonsy.
I also bought 3 paints with them, a metallic based brown, gold and bronze, they looked like a pile of fresh dog gak and a pile of 3 day old dog gak all rolled together...sadly my painting hasn't improved

old nurgle / khrone booster CSM pack.

For me it was Ragnar Blackmane, waaay back in '93 or '94ish can't remember exactly. He still leads my Wolves, though with a new paintjob of course.

First model I ever bought were the ogre top right and the flinching weretiger, from Games Workshop Manchester when it was (I think) the 5th of five stores worldwide. Great place to discover age 12 or 13 in the grim wildlands of 'Ooop North' in the Thatcher years. Amazing to think that the Perry twins are still the backbone of the company after all those years.

It is great to see that people have been collecting these miniatures for so long whether it be people who have been collecting since 2nd edition, or people who have only recently started.
Really never expected this kinda response when i started this thread.

Epic Ork Bonebreaka' tanks, along with a handful of paints back in 1995. I still remember my first attempt at 'priming' them - a rough drybrush with skull white that ruined the brush before I'd started painting them.
A few weeks later I followed up with the 'cool robot' - more commonly known as an Imperator Titan - and painted that terribly too.

Eldar Avatar when it still came in a box, with a square base way back in 2nd Edition. This was before I knew much about the game. I just liked the look of the model. Still have it, even though I sold the rest of my Eldar off.

Battle for skull pass, ran out of black so primed the dwarfs regal blue lol.

First model bought for me was a swooping hawk way back in like '99.

Gave up the hobby in favour of video games and running around after girls for a while

First models bought by me were Tau stealthsuits. They came out after I left the hobby and I was all giddy over these cool new mecha dudes

An eversor assassin.

First one I bought was a Vulture(Mad Dog) mech for battletech.

10 CSM.

Even though I;ve been into 40k lore for 3+ years I only started with the models/table in September. So it wasn't all that long ago...

Moria Goblins, I was 10 at the time. I didn't really care about it back then. I left them in the dust and they are still my dust collectors.

Box set of Necron raiders (thats what were called) and a greater unclean one. The greater unclean one was easy to pait and he is one of my favorite models.
I have him in a display case next to my forgeworld greater unclean one.

Earliest I can remember was a 2nd ed tactical squad.

In 2006 I bought a Necron Immortal.

To this day, it sits in my army bag in a special slot of it's own. It has no arms, no base, and it was half painted with a marker pen. It's my good Luck charm. It doesn't let me down.

My brother and I received Warhammer Quest for Christmas.
Today, I'm still thanking my parents for that one.
Or should I blame them for my addiction ? =P

My first model decision came down to between a box of Night Lords CSM and Iron Warriors CSM. I saw the metal warsmith model and coming from a family of engineers fell in love with dat servo arm. Bought the box and the warsmith. I wish I knew where those guy were... probably lost in the warp somewhere building a gigantic fortress of doom.

The first GW model that was bought for me was a box set of WHFB something or other, I forget, for my 11th birthday. The first GW thing I bought was probably the Space Marine/ Titan Legions box or Blood Bowl.

Was that the old metal cave troll with hammer and chain from when it was first released? I was so proud of my painting on him then. Compared to what I can do now he looks pretty rubbish but for the time he was great...

Either the Two Towers starter box (I can't remember if I actually paid for that one or not... but I seem to think I didn't), a Space Marine combat squad that I split with my brother, or my Wolf Lord (which my username is culled after), a Space Wolf Terminator Sergeant. Out of those 3 options I believe it was the Wolf Lord though.

1 little Leman Russ tank.

I still have him and use him in games.

My first models bought for 40k was the Assault on Black Reich Starter Set, some of the Orks I painted from that are funnily bad.

My first miniatures bought were actually a platoon of Italian Bersaglieri for Flames of War from a hobby shop in Gettysburg, which I ended up using in my Italian army when starting FoW (luckily, I hadn't painted these! ) .

Grenader D and D minis.

I saw the old RT stuff when it first came out and thought they was some sort of model armymen set. At first, I thought that stuff was crap.

Later picked up a box of the old squats, some bikes, a thudd gun and a bunch of assorted stiff, then dove into my first boxed set of 2d edition 40K.

By then the corruption was complete.

McVey was inspiration, but I'd already been painting for 10 years or so.

The dog eared copies of the WD from the early 100's got me into scenery, and vehicles.

First model I had was the old Blood Angel tactical squad box. Metal marines with plastic arms and a sculpted BA sgt. Waaaay back '92 I think.

I wonder what my first ever model was, I'm thinking it might have been a tank of some sort, probably a 1/32 Sherman which was motorised. The first thing I ever entered in a competition was a 1/72 Matchbox Hurricane. A good kit, I've built several since.

For me it was a Space Marine battleforce towards the start of 4th, under the impression that they were robots...

My first model kit was a Monogram M-16 Halftrack, 1/32 scale, from Kresge's dept. Store for 99 cents.
It was 1968.
My first true gaming figures were the Bashki LOTR Ringwraths and Fellowship. Soon followed by a lot of old Heritage Dungeon Dwellers box sets. Still have most of them.
My first Citadel figure was the Githyanki- like vampire from the old FA series.

The first model I bought was the AOBR set, which I actually pre-ordered. I had been really into the Dawn of War games and this seemed like a good place to start. It was $60 + $9 shipped, 8/29/08.

However, I didn't get them painted for a while. I was pretty intimidated just assembling them.

The first model I actually got painted up was a single Necron Immortal, which was actually my second 40K related purchase ever. The image metadata says 1/17/09, but I suspect I actually finished him in December 08 sometime.

After seeing an advert in Kerrang! circa 1990, the original Space Hulk box, shortly after which (occasioned by crushing disappointment with the plastic miniatures), the boxed set of these chaps.

The first model I bought was an actual scale model, a German Type VII U Boat, sometime around 1990 IIRC.

The first miniatures I bought (around 1993) were Battletech mechs, as BT was my introduction to gaming.

I recall seeing GW stuff back then, but didnt really know what it was. My store of choice was War & Pieces in West Hartford CT. I was primarily a scale modeler, so I didnt pay much attention to the cartoonish GW stuff. Years later BT lead me to other tabletop games and I learned all about 40k and others.

EDIT: The first miniatures I ever had were Ral Partha D&D minis, a birthday present along with the old red box D&D RPG set.

I got Assault on Black Reach as a wedding present. Sigh.... I never should've let my wife pick her army first. To this day I still lie awake at night wondering about the Orks that got away.

Melted down? That's a bit harsh. I recently stripped and repainted mine for a Sternguard unit. After all, they are my oldest marines so probably qualify as veterans.

It was Kaya the Wildborne - Hordes was the first game I really got into. I still love dragging out my Circle army.

I bought a 2-pack of metal Empire Knights in 1987 to share with a friend. The idea was to use them for RPGs, we were playing a lot of WHFRP and GURPS at the time.

We had no idea what to do with them and ended up painting them with Humbrol enamels (leftovers from my friend's model plane past) without undercoating. The results could have been better.

I thankfully have no pictures of them.

It was the late 1970's, I bought a pre-slotta Dwarf.
The sculpt was blocky and awful by todays standards but I loved it and painted it carefully with sticky old oil based humbrol modelling paints and painted a rudimentary fist on it's shield.
I still have it somewhere but I don't use it chiefly because the lead is soft and bendy and i dont want the raised axe to snap off after all these years.

The High Elf / Gondor Warriors set for LOTR. Just like soitra in his OP, I used horrendously thick enamel paints. It gets better though: not having any metallic enamel paints (unsurprisingly), I used a silver gel pen to gradually coat the armour and weapons. The result: red, blobs with inappropriately located and patchy smears of silver. They were truly, utterly dreadful, and I was truly, unabashedly proud of my work.

My first model was a Lizardmen Oldblood, about seven years ago.

My first attempt at painting was a 2nd Ed Termagant, that I promptly ruined with my unskilled 9 year old enthuisiasm. Loved it so much I went home and nagged my parents until they took me to GW and I bought a box of 2nd edition plastic Eldar Guardians ( I think you got 6 for £5). Despite never actually putting together a proper Eldar army in nearly 15 years of play, I will always have a soft spot for them because of this. I remember desperately wanting the Biel Tan Eldar to beat the Ultramarines in the battle report featured in the 3rd edition rulebook.

Very first mini purchased and painted: Gorfang Rotgut.

I still have him, actually. Painted him with Testors acrylics. All super high gloss, of course. Man, those were the days.

15 years ago, my first mini's were two metal space marines with bolters. I put so much Dark Angels green on them, it was so thick. I had their eagles painted bad moon yellow, bolters chaos black and chain mail silver, and their eyes blood red. The base was painted Goblin Green. I still have these two models and they sit on my desk to remind me how far I have come since I was 14ish.

When I was 7 or 8 I walked into a hobby shop and saw the -impressive- Wargaming section of the hobby shop I play at to this day. I was far more interested in Lord of the Rings however. Closely followed by 40k. As I had played the Original Dawn of War. I did a terrible job at painting the Goblins and Trolls. A friend of my father's painted the fellowship, we still have them somewhere. And I remember it being impossible to win as the Goblins. Yet I send them en-masse soviet meat grinder style.

When I began serious gaming. I got two boxes of Chaos Marines and a box of terminators. Was a pretty good start into the wonderful world of wargaming.

My first purchase was the Tau battleforce (current edition). Sadly the majority of its contents are sitting forgotten and neglected until I can sell it...

I purchased an Eldar battleforce from my best friend in middle school - this was back in year 1999 or so when the Eldar battleforce was ghetto and gave you a Viper, 3 Eldar Jetbikes, 20 Guardians and a Falcon (still a good deal, but still). Bought it from him for like $75 bucks and painted it quite detailed, but suffered from the lumpy craft paint syndrome and they looked TERRIBLE, but I was taken by the game by then already.

The first models I'd painted were the Guardians, they had an olive green, black, white, yellow, and red - so many colors! each surface was painted a different color.

I hated Eldar Jetbikes so much back then that I scrapped all 3 for Engine upgrades on my Falcon (oh, being 14). That and misunderstanding the Falcon's upgrades and playing it with a Bright Lance, a Scatter Laser, AND a pulse laser.


In retrospect, it really was amazing when I got better at painting how well you can just paint over your bad paintjobs, to an extend, to make them better.!

My first individual model purchased was the current edition lictor, but pewter not finecast. That was bought along with a tyranid battleforce. I can identify every single model that I put together from that set. Any model I've assembled I can date and anything I didn't assemble myself I can tell you the time of year (usually by month) and which year it was bought it. My first assembled model was a hormagaunt. On his base it says "tyranid 1".

Nothing got me into painting. It's just something that kinda happened. I've always liked the idea of art, but have been mediocre at it. Tyranids however were not covered in difficult icons and detail work so one day while my computer was occupied processing video I decided to paint to kill time. Previously I would write content for my D&D campaign setting. I couldn't tell you the order I painted my models or when they were painted. It's just something that kinda happened.

My first ever Games workshop purchase was a box of Fantasy orc boyz. back when the box gave you 2 units of 12 boyz each, one of archers and one of foot sloggers. mind you, at this point in time the ONLY customization available for these guys, without cutting something, was turning the shield on its peg, and the paintjob you gave them.

Well 3 years ago I won a tau pack ( squad of kroot, Ethereal, 30 fire warriours, 4 battle suits, and 15 gun drones) all in a card game, I sold it on but Last year I recently got properly into the game and bought 100 gretchin, An Aobr warboss and 10 deffkoptas and 50 boyz, sadly the boyz and gretchin were old style and no one let me play them as old style gretchin cant have an old style runtherd...

The first GW models I ever bought came in the Warhammer Quest game. I have fond memories of painting those guys. I was so proud of them at the time, but thinking back now I have to laugh at how bad they were.

First model was a Black Templar Emperor's Champion. I loved him, and still do (and to this day, years later, I still haven't painted him. One of my favourite models, and I'm gonna wait till my painting skills are superb before I touch him!) This was despite my first real army purchase being Tyranids a few weeks later.

(Don't worry, the Champion serves Chaos now! )

Hmm are we talking here about general plastic kits or wargaming minis? For plastic kits, probably something like a 1/72 scale Tiger, although that could be one of many of my dad's plastic kits that I destroyed with my enthusiasm.

The first model I ever bought was a pair of eldar warp spider exarchs in metal. Those things to this day make me happy to see.

My first model was Grimgor Ironhide. Remember going into Games Workshop with my father and picking him out. Was the most badass looking thing I had ever seen. Massive dude with a massive axe holding a severed head? My 10 year old eyes gleamed, damnit!

My first 40k figures were a blister box (anyone remember that afwul method of packaging?) of Imperial guard metals. It was a full squad of metal miniatures with plastic arms and included a sgt, trooper with grenade launcher, and one with a heavy bolter. This was December of 1989, and I THINK I paid something like 24$ for it. It might have been lower, but at this late date I can't be sure.

My first ever wargame miniatures of any sort were a set of seven or eight goblins that I think were produced by Heritige. I'd have to dig around on SoL to confirm that. This was around 1980, so I have long forgotten what I paid for them.

What was a blister box?

I still have some of the old styrofoam trays that went in the smaller boxes around. Do they still use these at all? Not bad, but the styrofoam seemed to be very likely to start crumbling. I'd guess these were mainly for metal squad boxes (Steel Legion IG, Sisters of Battle, etc.).

The first models I bought were 3 worgens for the lotr game. The second lord of the rings movie had just come out and I wanted to try out the mini game. Sadly they never got built but I discovered wh40k because of it. When my friend asked me what I wanted to play I simply responded "those zombie robot pirate guys"

What was a blister box?

Blister boxes were a style of packaging that GW was using for some of their products back when I first started playing Warhammer games in the late '80s, early '90s. They consisted of a clear hard plastic "box" about six inches by four inches. They had foam padding and were sealed in such a way that they were pretty much impossible to get into without breaking the back open with a screwdriver. They were generally reserved for squad size units of metal figures and/or big models like monsters, vehicles, etc. I hated them with a passion and do not miss them at all. I don't recall seeing them after around '92-'93 or so.
I'll have to look around the 'net to see if I can scare up a photo of one.

The first models I got were a Dark Eldar Archon and a box of 16 Warriors... I made a half-assed attempt to paint the Archon and one or two of the warriors, but I had absolutely no clue what I was doing so they're hilariously bad.

As for the question in the post, "What made (me) fall in love with painting?" The answer is... well, I'm really not. I was always daunted by it, and even now it's not something I eagerly anticipate. I drag my feet. But, when painting my Space Marines, I learned that it's not all that difficult to paint models to a passable level, and it's certainly enjoyable when I'm in the mood to do it.

I cant remember what year it was, but I think it was 90-91. The only GW store in the US was at Fair City Mall in Fairfax Virginia, about an hour and half away at the time. A friend had gotten me into 40k and I had been using his space marines, while he used his Eldar or Ork armies. I was tired of borrowing his marines so I drove up to the store one week and bought my own army.

I bought the following all at once:

2 boxes of plastic Beaky Marines (30 marines to a box for $30)-- $60
2 Rhino Boxes (3 Rhinos to a box for $14)-- $28
1 Predator Box (2 Predators to a box)-- $30
1 Land Raider box (2 Land Raiders to a box)-- $35

My first miniature was an assault on black reach Captain. Before I even picked up the brush I spent hours watching online painting tutorials, personally I think he turned out pretty well.

My first were the Blood Angels and Orks in the 2nd Edition boxed set. I painted the marines with red enamels but then I couldn't figure out why they were marines but had no camoflage. So, I added black spots to "camo" them up.

Then I read the "Codex Imperialis" and the grimdark influence took over....

First models I ever bought were 2 Tau Battleforces. I have since sold them off, but kept the first conversion I ever did out of those models.

My First models I bought were only about a year ago. For some reason I looked up some things on 40k and it looked cool. By some miracle I started talking to a friend of mine and he actually had a ton of 40k stuff and said he would sell anything I wanted for half the price of retail (he stopped playing/painting). They were Chaos but first painted would be my Thousand Sons.

Well, it was the battle box with DE and BT, 3rd edition.

Mines of Moria lotr sbg set, I ended up melting Gimli in an effort to strip paint from him, Aragorn, boromer, Gandalf, and the cave troll broke, the hobbits I have somewhere, and the goblins were to survive and go on to become the start of my old goblin army.

The old Necron Battleforce (the super awesome 5 Destroyer one ) and a Necron Lord . And every Battleforce I've bought since as caused me to feel like a kid at X-mas , so many dudes to build and paint . Good times .

My first model was an Inner Sphere light mech from the sadly defunct Classic Battletech by FASA, who partnered with Nintendo is responsible for at least half my childhood. Goddess that was atrocious, I was like... 10 so I had no idea what I was doing (thank the goddess I didn't have to assemble the thing...) and I think I ended up trying to paint it with] house paints XD.

Honestly my experiences with Classic almost got me out of gaming because the adults at the Not-So-Friendly LGS (seriously the guy who owned it was a serious jerk) were really not nice people. I get that I was a kid and probably annoying as hell, but going TFG on a 10 year old cause you want to prove you're tough is /seriously/ pathetic. Thankfully I found my awesome FLGS (where my brother and I have gone for years now) and 40k shortly after that. My first purchased unit was a Cadian Shock Troops squad.

An F-15 which my dad brought me, it never got finished though :(

yup, imperial guard valkyrie when i was 13. painted it with some cheap white acrylic paint and it was a good kit to build, very nice moulding, detailed interior etc......
just a huge shame i couldnt paint for really. £40 down the drain

Simple green(to strip the acrylic) my friend, but honestly I would say keep it, a reminder of how far you have progressed.

From GW, I had a friend buy me a set of Uruk-kai. They looked awesome and I painted like 5, which all ended up rather horribly. For 40k though, I bought the Tyranid codex/box'o'gants (the old one with 8 of each. The new one is surprisingly cheaper...) My first model painted was the Ripper base that came with it, and even while I have improved, I refuse to repaint it. It was sprayed white, and then I painted purple on the carapace, and added some black dots for eyes. Awful...

The first model I ever owned/painted was a night goblin from Skull Pass, which i got given and taught to paint at a GW store. The first thing I bought was a box of Orc Boyz. The first blister a pack of squigs and herders, iirc.

I don't know what the space marine version was like, but i will say , for the time, hands down the best kit GW ever produced. So many options, so much choice and posability and then GW as they always do pushed the bar of quality further and came up with this many years later

My first Miniature was one of the slotta base Imperial Dwarf armed with an axe from the late 80s. He had chainmail over a flat top helmet and a robe over that and I thought it was the absolute bollox.

I have never gotten so much from spending 50p (all of my pocket money in 1987!).

My first model was the very first long fangs box. The ones that held heavy weapons one-hand! Omg the box even contained paper banners
This is my 40k first models, but for WHFB I think it was king kazhador of karak azulejo or something like that... Hahahha kinda statue like model :O

LotR Warriors of Middle Earth and Commissar Yarrick. $14.99 and $8.99 in late 2001. I miss those prices. Now the same box of LotR minis is $22 with the number if models cut from 24 to 12 and Finecost/Failcast Yarrick will set you back $19.25.

Ah yes. I have 8 of these in storage! Shame I can't find a use for them now! It's sad they never made it into 3rd edition.

5 of the old metal terminators that I bought used from an old 40k mail list (this is 14 years ago before these fancy forums and such)... still in their original paintjob (and green base)

I bought them right at the end of 2nd edition and they've been in and out of my lists since then. I love the metal termies.

Ral Partha dragon. Painted it blue. Got it in like 1986. Still have it.
