Wardens of the Maelstrom Adepticon 2012 Recap  @ 2012/04/23 02:30:18

Post by: IceAngel

I have finally returned to my home after a long weekend of gaming, chatting, buying models I don't need, and taking a LOT of pictures. Adepticon was once again awesome. I'll be posting pictures of some of my favorite models and boards. I also demo'd some cool new games that are in the works. For those of you who don't know what Adepticon is, it's a gaming convention in Chicago Illinois USA. I think this was its tenth year, maybe? It is probably best known for its 40k team tournament but there are plenty of other tournaments going on as well. If you live in the northern hemisphere you should go!

Now, I am a member of the Wardens of the Maelstrom. I figured I'd start off by showing off the teams display this year.

It's a Badab War themed team. We have Mantis Warriors (Gitsplitta), Lamenters (Solar_lion), Minotaurs (briancj), and Space Sharks (Mr.Malevolent). Solar made the board this year and it was awesome. Major kudos to him!

Here are some close ups of each army on the board. Something my pictures don't pick up are the working lights that are flickering in the base. There is also a pit with a back lit genestealer up top by the space sharks. It was very cool.

Just for the record, we got 56 of 60 points in appearance and 56 of 60 points in theme. Near perfect! We were also a finalist in the theme competition. Final standing: 50th place out of 120. A 40+ place improvement over last year.

As I only had my phone camera with me (which isn't great) & it was mostly running low on batteries... I only took a few pics, and out of those, only a couple are worth posting. But here is one that I liked... got it wandering through the hall while the Gladiator was going on. Stunningly beautiful army.

Post by: Gitsplitta

I sent this out privately... but I wanted to make it public as I feel some official recognition of all the effort everyone put in is due.

--------

To this year's active members of The Wardens of the Maelstrom: (Briancj, Solar_Lion, Mr. Malevolent, Ice Angel and Steve... who doesn't have a Dakka account but at one time was known as "Moonpie".

Dear Brothers-in-Arms,

My sincere and heart-felt thanks to everyone who participated in our Adepticon run this year. We met with unprecedented success in both military and presentation categories and were among the finalists in the Imperial Theme category which is always highly contested. Our team improved by over 40 (yes, 40) places in the overall standings and we only lost 8 points out of the 120 possible in theme and appearance (combined) and a very high sportsmanship score to boot.

We got to meet a lot of other dakkanaughts, including many mods, Legoburner and Yakface and we *nearly* got to play with Major Tom in his very first 40k game! Still, we all got to try Kill Zone with RiTides thanks to Briancj. We had 4 fantastic games in the tournament against fun opponents with interesting armies.

I know that Adepticon is a very large financial burden in travel, food and lodging... not to mention the investment in time and money getting your armies together. SL spent hundreds of dollars on the fantastic display, as well as hundreds of hours of build and painting time. Briancj took care of our shirts and name tags... I must imagine getting us to agree on a design was like herding cats, but the end result was fantastic!. I know that I can be a real pest when it comes to asking for updates, reports and assurances or requesting list changes in order to try to keep the team on task. I also know that those of you with families have had to sacrifice significant amounts of time with them in order to meet your commitment to the team.

You guys all came through with shining colors! I've very proud of our team's accomplishments and thankful to have convinced such a great group of talented guys to play together, following my rather myopic vision of 40k. The fact that people who are not playing continue to contribute each year to the team's success just blows me away. This year of course, it was Ice's contribution of the original fiction that made such a difference and was clearly implicated in our strong showing in the Theme competition. Both Ice and Steve supported us on Friday and all day on Saturday during the tournament.

In spite of all the stress and the 13-hour marathon of the team tournament... everyone kept a smile on their faces and good humor throughout the event (well... by the end of the 4th game I think I could be medically classified as "unresponsive" but I wasn't unhappy, it was just that from a mental perspective... the "off" switch had been thrown). We stayed positive, and kept fighting no matter the odds. I think that showed clearly in decent battle score for the year. I hope everyone had fun. An event of that nature is an extraordinary experience and the team tournament is one of the signature 40k events in the world today. We accounted for ourselves well, especially considering none of us fielded what could be considered a competitive army. We fielded solid armies and used them to good effect. Well done boys.

For these and a hundred other things I either don't know about or remember I want to thank each of you from the bottom of my heart. It was an honor to take the field with you. Something I'd be delighted to be able to again in the future.

Sincerely,
Gitsplitta

Fantastic work again this year, guys. Just stunning, and really raising the bar well over where it already was. I played against Sons of Shatner and know how gorgeous they had to be to even be in the running against you guys. Wish I had gotten to properly drool over your stuff, and to meet you guys, but it was stunning.

I was really disappointed that I didn't get to meet you as well, though I did learn that even people who know you aren't sure how to pronounce your handle! ("handle" is kind of an old, CB word... is there a more net-savvy word now?) Was hoping to meet Mikhalia (sp?) too but I just never seemed to draw a bead on him. I was delighted to meet all the folks I did though. Funny story there but I'll save it for later in the thread.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Git especially. Adepticon this year was very different for me but I felt it really became a better event in my mind. Not only did I get to spend it with my team but I got to spend a lot of time checking out other games. Something I recommend is trying out a game called Leviathans, it should be out later this year. I also demo'd a game called Zombicide. I played it with the author of the flesh tearer novels. How cool is that?! I finally succumbed to the pressure and tried out Warmachine and Hordes.

Back to the 40k action though. Here are a couple of my favorite displays this year.

This is was the display for a french canadian team. They won something. They played a Mechanicum force. All of their vehicles were the front half of storm ravens. Lots of awesome conversions on that board.

Here is the winning, Cult of Charlie Sheen display. I don't think I need to say more.

Surprisingly I only had a couple actual army shots of the Cult. They were a fantastic demonette army.

The game we played against the Wardens was the highlight of the Team Tournament for me - a fantastically modeled and painted army and, even more important, a really good group of guys!

Thanks Alpharius, we felt exactly the same way about you guys. The true-scale marines both you and RiTides had and his MONSTER dreadnoughts were really something to see! We had a great time playing you too... can't remember smiling that much during a game, especially a tournament game... in a long, long time.

RiTides took a pic of his assault marines and mine right next to each other when we were playing Kill Zone on Sunday... really neat to see the size difference between my original plastic beakies and his true-scale marines. (it was huge) Hope he posts it eventually.

Post by: Gitsplitta

I thought the tables were really good this year, my hat's off to the folks that put them together. We fought on 2 different Realms of Battle boards with lots of fancy buildings and such on them. They're kind of a PITA to play on as everything is sloped and the dice are just "dead" on them... but they sure are pretty, which is 90% of it for me.

Since I didn't have any pictures to add, I thought I'd tell a couple of stories about the weekend. The first is mercifully short, and is the story of why I changed my profession to "Nerd Ambassador".

Team tournament, awards, etc is finally over. I'm zapped. Needing food and sleep. It's near midnight. I have my little tray that SL made for me with my army on it and make my way to the elevator. As I walk in, 3 young people (20s) walk in, undoubtedly from the wedding that was being held at the same time. The tall kid says distinctly "Nerd hobby." as they walk in. Cheeky b*stard... rude too. However, within about 15 seconds of the doors closing, both guys and the girl were over by me looking at the army, asking questions, "did I paint them myself?", etc. It was clear they weren't interested in the game, but were impressed by the figures. By the time the car stopped, they were smiling and nodding and someone even said "pretty cool".

So I did my bit for God and 40k. Even after 13 hours of power gaming.

Git and team, I make no promises of growing out a giant beard. That being said, here are a couple of my favorite pics from the painting competition. I think I have nearly everyone of the entries in my dakka adepticon 2012 folder if you want to see more but I picked a couple of my favorite to show you guys.

I started writing this post about 30 minutes ago and I had a lot of trouble picking out my favorite models. They all were amazing this year. Lots of them really grabbed my attention. I wish I had brought a better camera. I wish the light had been better in there too! Please check out the rest of my pictures to see the other entries.

Here are some other displays I thought were amazing.

Chaos

BA board?- I got this pic before the figures were set up. The painting of the structures was very nice.

Cool Ork display. The Grot Tanks were very cool.

The Amazing Cult of Charlie Sheen- Winning! I love the look on the judges face!.. I Imagine him saying " Thats not illegal in all 50 states!"

SW Army. The display rotated 360 degrees.

Nice Necron display

DE Display

These are only a fraction of the armies that I saw. You could spend hours just going to display after display.. I do not envy the judges!

Much more to come!

It's worth noting that we accidentally stole the other Badab War team's table during set-up early on Saturday. They were absolutely great about it though and thought it was hilarious that one Badab team had pulled a fast one on the other. As you can see by their smiles, they were really cool and the two teams had a great talk (almost missed our session with the judges... my "spidey sense" tingled and I excused myself to walk back to our display... 30 seconds later the judges showed up).

It was all accidental of course, the set-up director told me to grab any open table in the back and I just happened to grab the table the other team had the hotel bring in for their display. Sorry gents!

Yeah. Thought to be fair we had experience with the exact same mission and setup. Yeah . I hate when it is something you do to yourself.

Still I feel avenged when I put your Wolf lord in the ground! ( after he butchered almost 1/2 our armies)
and my Dread ate the entire BA Assault squad.

Good, challenging and fun game.

Wow, I didn't find this thread until now!

I had posted this in the DCM section, but for the Wardens who can't access that area, I am very happy to have a place to say that it was Fantastic to meet all of you . The Kill Zone game on Sunday was actually a highlight of my weekend! You guys were also extremely fun to play in the team tournament, although I think I was so excited to play Dakkanauts that I talked more than played and we had to rush to get in just the 4th turn! Next year, if I can go, I will have more 40k experience and won't have to double-check / think things through so much . I.e... should we move Ken's rhino into the next table quarter to win the game....!? Of course not, that would make too much sense

I also somehow convinced myself that Git's final marine in Kill Zone should assault across a barrier... I plead rookie mistake here, too

I know I saw Ice Angel in passing, not sure about Steve? Did you two play in a different event on Saturday?

Here are the pics I have involving the Wardens' armies, unfortunately the ones of our actual game didn't turn out (I think I was shaking the camera, and they're a bit dark, so they're not here). I have to say, I knew Gits' stuff would be amazing, but the rest of your armies were awesome, too! The yellow in particular... wow, and the hardest color to paint I hear, too.

@RiTides - I was unsure if I'd be able to make it until only a few months ago so I didn't participate in any events this year. I just came, supported the Wardens, and hung out. I am sorry I missed out on the games on Sunday though. Next year we'll stay much later so we can get in a game with everybody. I did stop by and meet you and the other dakkanauts when you both played together. Steve was with me as well. He was in the Executioner gray shirt and I was in the Tiger Claw orange shirt.

Next year we should try to get enough dakka peeps to play a giant game on Sunday. With enough people we should be able to complete it in a reasonable amount of time.

I like pic #3... my assault marine looks like he's trying to shove his flamer into the helmet of the Minotaur. (this little exchange ended badly as I recall)

You know, the more I see that old libby I painted up at the last minute... the more I fall in love with it. I mean it was always my favorite libby figure... but now I actually like the paint job too.

Here is the book that we presented along with our team display. It was originally bound and locked, with the key being presented to the judges by special order of the Inquisition. I've changed mundane names to dakka screen names for ease of reading. Each major section was it's own page, they are separated by a series of dashes in this document ( ------- ). The book also contained complete army lists, which I won't include here. The original is printed on heavy parchment... this is the best translation I can do for the web.

The Badab War

by Rick Priestley
(White Dwarf 101, May 1988)

In 901.M41, as a result of Lufgt Huron's apparent mental destabilisation, the Master of the Tiger Claws and Lord of Badab attacked and destroyed an Imperial investigation fleet as it entered orbit around Badab. Huron's action can be understood with the benefit of hindsight. The Adeptus Mechanicus had long complained of the Tiger Claws' tardiness in submitting gene-seed for routine analysis, whilst the chapter had amassed a huge debt in planetary tithes stretching back over a hundred and fifty years. And when the Imperium moved against its wayward chapter, a full scale rebellion was initiated, the most serious of its kind since the end of the Fourth Quadrant Rebellion in 780.M41.

The Tyrant of Badab, as Commander Huron is known in Imperial histories, was a power-hungry and ambitious individual who should never have risen to power within a Marine Chapter. He was plainly a dangerous individual, able in many respects but lacking the absolute dedication to humanity vital in a Lord of the Imperium. It will never be known for sure, but current hypotheses suggest that the Commander was either an alien shapechanger, or otherwise subject to alien domination of a most unnatural kind. A sudden and unexpected manifestation of psychic powers may lie at the heart of the matter.

By 903 three other chapters, the Mantis Warriors, Executioners and Lamenters had joined the rebellion. Imperial shipping was attacked, and a ship belonging to the Fire Hawks Chapter was captured by the Mantis Warriors in 904. The Fire Hawks immediately retaliated, and soon five whole chapters were involved in the fighting. The Emperor recalled the Marines Errant from the Eastern Fringes, but they quickly found themselves fully occupied protecting Imperial ships in transit.

In 906 two more loyal Marine units, the Red Scorpions and the Minotaurs, had been brought in, and the threat to Imperial shipping was more or less quashed. In 907 the Red Scorpions and Fire Hawks were recalled to their normal service duties in the galactic east, and two more chapters, the Novamarines and Howling Griffons were committed to space-lane duties.

Meanwhile, the Star Phantoms began the task of besieging Badab whilst two other chapters were drafted in to investigate the worlds occupied by the Mantis Warriors and Executioners. The Lamenters were caught in an ambush by the Minotaurs in 908 and eventually surrendered after bloody ship-to-ship fighting. This came as a great blow to the Tyrant, and the rest of the war consisted almost entirely of close sieges. The uprising came to an end in 912 with the fall of Badab and final defeat of the Tiger Claws. Before the war was over, The Exorcists, Fire Angels, Salamanders, Space Sharks and Sons of Medusa all became involved for short periods of time; chapters replacing other chapters as pressures elsewhere necessitated their re-deployment.

With the rebellion over, The Mantis Legion, Executioners and Lamenters were granted the Emperor's forgiveness, subject to undertaking a hundred year crusade. The homeworlds of the Mantis Legion and Executioners were forfeited to the Space Sharks and Star Phantoms for their part in the war. The other legions received salvage rights to spacecraft and a proportion of the booty. The Tiger Claws were all but destroyed. Only a contingent of about two hunded fought their way through the Exorcists' blockade and escaped into deep space. They have not been heard of since. Of the fate of Imperial Commander Lufgt Huron, Master of the Tiger Claws and Tyrant of Badab, nothing is known.

Listening Position Secondus (LPS)

Throughout the Badab and Endymion Clusters the successful defense grid of the Imperium counted on quick communication between the worlds and its allies. During M39 or possibly late in M38 the pre-Imperial worlds in these areas set up several small networks of listening posts. These stations used a technology that has since been lost to the Imperium but after the formation of the Wardens the use of these stations has greatly improved the response time in the clusters.

These stations once found, have been coveted by the Imperial forces and have proven to be extremely valuable assets. The LPS network is believed to be fully operational, however all logistical and documentation has been kept by the Tiger Claws and the other Warden Chapters. No information on the capabilities or locations has ever been sent to Terra despite dozens of requests by the High Lords.

Per ancient text discovered on Cygnax, the Listening Position Secondus grid consisted of twenty one hundred stations throughout the Maelstrom and its surrounding systems. After the establishment of the Wardens these positions of high importance were sought out. Mention of the grid becoming fully operational has been documented in hundreds of reports yet no maps exist of their locations.

It is believed that only a fraction of the original grid has been located and brought to operational level; however the truth will most likely never be known. As the Badab War proceeds, the loyalist’s forces have located several of the LPS stations but all have self-destructed upon discovery.

Mantis Warriors
(story by Ice Angel)

Librarian Artemic knelt hidden, behind a grated panel. The ancient panel was covered in a fine layer of dust and hadn’t moved in a century. The still air around him smelled of aged copper with a hint of mold. He closed his eyes while taking a deep breath. When he opened his eyes his vision fell on the copper-armored marine working steadily on the other side, unaware of Artemic’s presence

For the last hour the marine had been replacing wires and reactivating panels and equipment that dotted the foyer. The marine had taken off his helmet and with diligent effort had made a truly impressive amount of progress. His technical expertise with this ancient equipment was surprising. Where other marines had passed by, this marine continued his quest to awaken the listening station that surrounded them. Clearly this marine from the Minotaur Chapter was determined to fulfill his superior’s orders as fast as possible.

A shout came from the Minotaur’s left. It was in High Gothic and filled with arrogance. Librarian Artemic didn’t flinch at the shout but continued to watch the marine.

“Thane!” the shout came once again. “Is this it?”

The Minotaur reluctantly set down his tools and looked to his left before responding. “No! We need a gamma-eight centrifugal divergent……you…. never mind. I’ll find one.” He got up and stormed off, clearly annoyed at his fellow astartes.

Brother Thane grumbled about his superiors and the lack of proper parts as he began to leave the foyer. Librarian Artemic couldn’t help but smile as he glanced to the floor next to his knee and saw the piece the Minotaur was searching for.

He checked his chronometer. Thirty two more minutes until he could evacuate his hiding place. As much as he despised the idea, he was looking forward to executing his strike on the Minotuars. The war needed to end. Two years ago Artemic was a Tranquility Veteran amongst hundreds of others, now he is leading his own task force. Unfortunately it wasn’t for his deeds in battle or his tactical skill—it was because most of the other veterans had been sent to the Emperor’s side. This war had taken a heavy toll on the Mantis Warriors. Only a handful of veterans were left, some of which sat in silence behind him in the service tunnel. They were his respected comrades, his brothers… but win or lose Artemic knew that this war would have to end soon, or there wouldn’t be any more veterans to turn into captains or any veterans to teach the future of the chapter.

Lamenters
(story by Ice Angel)

The Lamenter Chaplain Aanasius peaked over the ridge. Before him lay scattered around the rocky spires of the canyon, were signs of the hidden listening station. Two hundred yards ahead of him embedded into a cliff was the entrance to the ancient position. As the war had progressed the use of these ancient devices had become more and more vital to the success of the two sides. The chaplain examined the armor plates of the entrance before his eyes nestled onto a pair of space marines. Their copper colored armor was covered in red trim and symbols of the mythical minotaur. His lip twitched in anger. No other space marine chapter upset him more then the cursed Minotaur Chapter. They seemed to relish fighting other space marines. The Lamenters had already lost many of their numbers to those political pawns.

Calming himself he closed his eyes and refocused. He needed control. Slowly he lowered himself back behind the ridge. Behind him was his small detachment of astartes. Looking over them he saw the strength and power at his disposal. He wished he had more but the war wasn’t going well for the Lamenters as of late. Astartes on astartes combat was always costly and even now the words of Lufgt Huron were beginning to raise more questions then answers. The Chaplain had his doubts but he followed his orders and trusted in the Emperor to guide them through this. As he dwelled on this thought he reviewed his stoic marines. His quiet force was prepared but the typical fervor was gone. They didn’t show it but he felt it. It didn’t take hundreds of years of psychic conditioning to feel the doubt in his men.

A series of hand gestures came down a nearby line of assault troopers as weapons silently came up. The nearby vindicator adjusted several hull mounted cameras. They all waited for confirmation or orders. The Chaplain watched as a yellow and black armored marine seemed to materialize out of a nearby rocky out cropping.

Seeing the Mantis Warrior step out of the rocks gave him some hope. The Lamenter force may have already been defeated had the Mantis Warriors not intervened. After the loss of the listening station the Mantis Warriors were the first to arrive, but instead of investigating as the Lamenters wanted. They hid themselves waiting for the enemy. In typical Mantis style they disappeared amongst the surrounding natural environment setting traps and waiting to pounce.

The Chaplain didn’t know how many were here but seeing the lone marine made him smile. The Mantis Warrior stalked past the vindicator and the assault marines. Several silent greetings were exchanged before the Mantis Warrior stopped before the Chaplain.

Chaplain Aanasius held out a hand in a warriors greeting. “Greeting Mantis, you must be Buzka.”

The camo armored Mantis Warrior grasped his forearm. “Correct, Chaplain Aanasius. My commander apologizes for not coming in person but he is close to our objective and in position to strike from wthin.”

“Excellent.” Chaplain Aanasius quietly spoke. He did indeed want to move and quickly but the thoughts of attacking fellow astartes bothered him once again. “When shall we make our move?”

Sergeant Buzka looked towards the ridge that separated them and their target. “The blast will occur in seven minutes. Prepare your men.” With one final salute he began to walk away. “Continue radio silence, we will attack from the south while you dive at them from the east.”

Chaplain Aanasius watched as the mantis warrior melted into the rocky out cropping and disappeared from sight. With a simple left handed gesture his marines slowly crept towards the top of the ridge. They were spread out behind separate rocks and outcroppings, climbing as much as they dare. None looked over the top for fear of being spotted.

Aanasius walked down from the ridge towards an awaiting Stormraven. At his approach its engines began to warm up. As he reached the forward hatch the Stormraven he peered into the darkness of the opening at five white armored marines. They were restrained to the walls and were unmoving. He sensed their anger, he sensed their rage. They had been restrained and unable to move sense their last engagement. Their battle lust never sated, they waited once again for the Chaplain to unleash them.

Pushing thoughts of the death company aside he turned around to peer out the still open forward hatch. He hadn’t bothered to close it. With a thought, orders were issued. The raven leapt into the air, the vindicator began to move out as the hidden assault marines crested the ridge and flew towards the outpost.

Seconds before passing over the ridge an urgent icon from Brother Frealm blinked in his HUD. Consulting the map in his HUD he realized Brother Frealm was either in error or they were in trouble. Risking a look, Chaplain Aanasius ordered the Raven higher.

The listening station was the same as it was before but now several units of gray armored marines could be seen marching across the plateau to the north of the station. Numbers and tactics filled his thoughts. He pictured the oncoming explosion. The minotaurs down below would have to wait. The new enemies above the station would be their primary target or they would hold the superior position.

At seven seconds left, Chaplain Aanasius altered his detachments orders. He took in the view once more, observing the deployment of his adversaries. His men adjusted instantly.

As the yellow Stormraven adjusted its trajectory, the gray armored Carchodons began to bring up their weapons when the explosions erupted between them. Metal, fire, and a wave of heat passed over him during his descent. With a thought the restraints on the death company released, astartes or not, his enemies would pay.

Minotaurs
(story by Ice Angel)

The auspex flew across the room and smashed into the steel wall of the control room. The hardy piece of war equipment clattered to the floor. Despite the inhuman strength of Librarian Tavros Spathi the auspex stayed in one piece. Tavros stood tall and monitored the fallen auspex with contempt.

Suddenly the Librarian began to pace back and forth in the room in front of a Minotuar assault squad that lined one wall awaiting orders. They stood perfectly still at parade rest, weapons were sheathed, their plumed helms were staring forwards.

After another glance at the damaged auspex Tavros stalked over to the window. The ancient pane of thick rubber glass was only two feet tall but ran the length of the room. Leaning on a console Tavros looked out over the rocky outcroppings before him.

“Why do they ignore our calls?” he asked to no one in particular. “What is the purpose of sending a detachment of Carchodons to our position?” he pondered.

“Dranicus, repair your auspex and continue to hail them.” Tavros ordered without looking back.

The Librarian heard the slap as the marine saluted and then quickly retrieved the broken device. Without a word he quickly took it apart and began the repairs.

Tavros sneered at the thought of dealing with the Carchodons face to face. His superiors deemed them allies but after hearing about their actions and tactics, Tavros despised them. Then again, he despised any one that wasn’t a Minotuar. Suddenly a thought filled his mind. His sneer began to contort into a grin.

Maybe the Carchodons weren’t as loyal as his commanders thought. The approach of the gray armored marines might turn into an amusing situation. Not a signal of any kind felt suspicious.

Spinning around the Librarian reviewed his assault squad. Squad Apateonas stood perfectly still, prime examples of astartes training and obedience. A side glance brought his attention to Dranicus.

“On second thought Dranicus, complete your repairs but do not hail the Carchodons. Clearly they don’t want to chat.” With several taps on his forearm communications controls he spoke again. “Be on alert for approaching Carchodons, intentions unknown. Do not hesitate if they prove……. hostile.”

Tavros felt a surge of warp energy as the thought of engaging the ferocious Carchodons tickled his lust for battle. “Squad Apateonas, with me.” He spat through his grin.

Carcharodons
(story by Ice Angel)

The engines of the Thunderhawk briefly roared before reaching its needed elevation. Only the whisper of the wind could be heard it sped off into the distance. The massive dreadnought watched it depart away from their flank before turning towards the units of marines ahead of him. “May the Emperor watch over you” his deep voice boomed as he resumed his march. None of the marines nearby paid him any heed. Once the march resumed no one spoke, only the steps of marines and the dreadnoughts heavy strides broke the silence.

On top of a rocky plateau the detachment of Carchodons moved towards the listening post. Brother Nikon, also known as Ancient Nikon or the Ancient Hunter, strode forward on powerful legs. He thought of all the planets his legs had stepped on, all of the ships he had traveled in. He then pondered how many legs he’d gone through in his long history as a marine and dreadnought of the Carchodon force.

As his massive and long strides took him towards yet another objective he looked around at his brethren. He knew they respected him and looked up to him, but over the past century he’d felt increasingly distant from his free-standing brethren.

Purple skies, orange plant life, cliffs of obsidian, geysers of liquid mercury, and countless alien structures flooded his thoughts. The sounds of alien life and unexplainable machinery flickered through his mind as if a memory filled concert was about to start. The bizarre smells of countless battlefields passed through his consciousness before a jab of sorrow interrupted his revelry. Ancient Nikon slowed for a brief moment as he realized he hadn’t smelled a battlefield in centuries. Nor had he smelled the tang of weapon oil, the once familiar stench of hydrolic fluid, not even his own genetically altered sweat. If he could have smiled he would have, but he silently laughed to himself as he realized he hadn’t sweat in several centuries either.

He reviewed his marines once again. His detachment commander, Librarian Cruviel “The Shadow Maw” was in front of him. Nikon stared at the back of Cruviel’s head. The Librarian turned around and met his gaze before turning back towards his march. Cruviel was agitated and Nikon knew it… but Nikon knew better than raise the subject unprompted. The edge of the plateau began to come into sight over the uneven rocky area. The mission’s parameters, objectives, and maps began to replace his ancient memories. Weapon systems rechecked themselves as he prepared for the upcoming engagement.

The likely Minotaur positions appeared in his heads-up display as did the known locations of the Lamenters. The count-down signal that they had intercepted appeared at the bottom of the HUD. Cruviel himself had broken the cipher and determined its meaning. As they approached the position he noticed the Minotaurs hadn’t withdrawn as they’d expected.

Nikon looked down at Cruviel once again.

Regardless of Nikon’s age and capabilities he wasn’t in a position to question orders or motives, but it seemed that the Carchodons didn’t plan on warning the Minotaurs of the hidden Lamenters and their impeding attack.

The units of Carchodons began to spread out. Still nothing had been spoken, their orders having been issued hours ago. Everyone knew their roles. The Red Brethren moved to Nikon’s left. The Devourers of Tranquility moved right. The Obliterators along with the Shadow Maw and himself continued forwards.

-------

Order of Battle

Librarian: Cruviel "The Shadow Maw"
Apothecaries: Corpse Takers Brothers Typho, Demius and Archelo

Fantastic! Great display of the Wardens' armies, and I love the personalized stories by Ice Angel. I have to say, though, that the book was even more impressive in person....

Some great pics so far... Part of the problem with the scale of Adepticon was that there was just too much to take in all at once. I did multiple laps of the hall during the Championships and Team Tournie and still missed some cool stuff.

I have uploaded my pics from the event to my Dakka Gallery.

I had a blast, even though I didn't go so spectacularly in the events I played in... 1-3 in the Championships and 2-2 in the Combat Patrol. All fantastic games, though. Being paired against the previous year's winner in the first round of the Championship didn't help

My other games:
Long Fangs ahoy! (Yep, 2 out of my 4 Championship games were Space Wolves vs Space Wolves...)

Bikes, sah, fahsands of them!

Puny Guardsmen, drunk opponent, easy win, right?

You could say that, yes...

Results are up on the Adepticon site. 117 out of 254 for the Championship. I'm pretty happy with that. Even happier with the 42 for Paint.... James Wappel scored 45.

Also came 25th out of 54 for Combat Patrol. Given the calibre of the competition, and my to-date usual tournament showings that are generally closer to the bottom of the list, I'm quite content with both of those results.

First game against Nids. Git and I teamed up. Note this is not a battle report per say. Just some shots and commentary on what was going on…

Set up and opening move

They Covered the back edge!

Ending of the Nid movement

Mass movement Left – We managed to get off some shots, but not enough to thin the Gargoyles. Sternguard and Assault squads go to work

Genestealers on the flank left…

Move up the center

Genestealers on the right flank

Our Position

Death company drops out to push forward on the left flank

After much Close combat the sternguard flamers melt Genestealers in droves Killing 11. Leaving only 3 . DC dread finishes them.

Ready to sell ourselves to hold or contest the objective on the right.

Push around the center we go ( note we removed the SR to move things easier

Right flanks Nids push forward

Incoming fire takes 2 Marines and destroys Vindi.

DC and SR make a push to the objective

Not quite enough to make it past the wall and into the nids - Game over! Another turn we would have taken their objective , but the would have swarmed ours as well. Fun game.
would of like to see my DC dread go 1-1 on the big guy!

When I talk to these guys later they told me they went up against a IG army and got shot to peices.

2nd game against IG and SM .. this time Mr. M. and I
Starting set up

Scouts take shots but are ineffective. Sharks DP seals in the armor. Libby and melta disables the Chimera in the opening.

Flanking bikes jump on the board. SR , Sharks dread and RB start disabling the IG tanks. All the while getting pounded by the Manticore and Thudd gun

Death company deploys to deal with intruders in the quarter of the table

DC take out their rage on the scouts

While the dread feasts of some scout bikers

Bad day to be a scout biker

IG Russes go to work on the sharks Razorback. Sharks pile out o deal with more scouts. More pounding by the by the Manticore and Thudd gun

Finishing up the scouts.. massive fire eliminates all but the Sharks Libby… you can see him on the right side of the DP

Move up to support what we thought was the counter attack with the IG troops.

Push with the DC and assault squads on the left flank. Libby thaken to the Emperors grace ( whats left of him)

Another pounding takes out the other RB. SR and Sharks Dread pound on the tanks

DC moves up.. SR zooms to help put on right flank

Dread takes the brunt of the guard ground attack.

Lamenter assault squad backs up to secure the quarter.

Vindicator tries to take out the remaining enemy RB troops

But scatters almost taking out he Sharks dread

Game ends as the DC and Chaplain take revenge on the veterans that killed the dread.. Game over..

I tried to play scouts the Space Marine way during that game, defensive and reactive.

The last game I played very aggresive, and I think that made the difference. IG sitting in the back waiting to attack, and Scouts heading forward to attack and distract.

Even on the loosing side, this was probably the best game of the day for me. Very enjoyable match up, great players, and very nice looking models.

Quick question.. To make your teams do you just have 4 diffrent 1000 point armys or do you have 2 2000 point armys? Do you share FOC slots?

Wardens of the Maelstrom Adepticon 2012 Recap  @ 2012/05/07 19:00:51

Post by: Kurros

Adepticon has special FOC rules for the team event.

The lists break down like this:

List 1: 1 HQ, 0-1 Elite, 1-3 Troops, 0-1 Fast, 0-1 Heavy
List 2: 1 HQ, 0-2 Elite, 1-3 Troops, 0-1 Fast, 0-1 Heavy
List 3: 1 HQ, 0-1 Elite, 1-3 Troops, 0-2 Fast, 0-1 Heavy
List 4: 1 HQ, 0-1 Elite, 1-3 Troops, 0-1 Fast, 0-2 Heavy

You are then randomly paired into two, two man teams. You will play a game with every teammate at least once.

Wardens of the Maelstrom Adepticon 2012 Recap  @ 2012/05/07 19:02:34

Post by: Briancj

The rules are all on the Adepticon page, which you should read as they include all of this year's missions so you can see how...imaginative...they are.

Here's the quick rundown:

1 Team, 4 Players.

Each player has a single 1000 point army. Each player takes one of four different Force Org charts. No FOC can be duplicated.

The base chart is 1 HQ, 1-3 Troops, 1 Elite, 1 Fast, 1 Heavy. The other three allow the addition of a Fast, Elite, or Heavy slot.

IA is allowed, with restrictions.

Synergy happens when a team, or team-members, take the same codex. For example, a Space Marine Team with a MOTF *ALL* benefit from the MOTF's rules about Dreadnoughts in different FOC slots. Etc.

Each game, you are randomly teamed up with ONE of your Teammates. Then the two pairs face off against another team. In the fourth round, the Team Captain chooses the pairings. You are guaranteed four games. It is an all-day slogfest. All. Day.

You may benefit from your teammate-of-the-round special abilities. For example, the FNP bubble from a temmate's Sanguinary Priest affects your forces as well. And so on.

Again, check the Adepitcon site for full rules.

--B

PS: With 6th Ed dropping in July, much of this is moot.

Well yeah.
More improvement in the close combat department though, Lascannons were still just bright lights flashing in the distance.
I still couldn't believe the dice I brought were rolling so horribly.
They would roll really good, then BAM roll straight 1's for 2-3 turns.
Unbelievable.

This may seem random... but does anyone who attended Adepticon this year want to sell me their Adepticon robot model? I've decided to use mine as a Penitent Engine for my growing Sisters of Battle army and I need two more. I'll have a P&M blog started very soon for them.

Have you contacted the Adepticon folks directly? They may be available through them.

They seem pretty big for servitors.

Yes... *giant* servitors... They're very cool figures, but a tough proxy for most armies. Maybe something Necron?

Having gone thru all the variations and releases of 40K. I look at it as part of a early or past creation. Brings me back to the robots and tin boys of old. I agree it would look odd in an up to date SM army.

Also those Imperial Mechanius techpriests are always looking to up one another so maybe this would be a wild idea of ego.

Necrons could work. However the design looks very primitive for the advanced technology of the Necrons IMO.

I could definitely see them being used for an Adepticus Mechanicus army. Maybe one of the many Fan-Dexes out there.
They work perfect for Penitent Engines and are way cheaper....

OK, last post spamming this thread with Adepticonstruct pictures. Don't want to drag this awesome tread off-topic.

This guy is actually a good bit taller than a regular dreadnought, more contemptor size probably. The main problem I have had with using the Puppet's War arms on a regular SM dreaw was the roundness of it. Everything Space Marine is just so square that it seemed out of place. But the Adepticonstruct has so many curves that they look perfect with it IMO.

Are the barrel ends of those two sets of auto cannons different?? Did they come that way?

They are, which was kind of weird. Not sure if there was a mold change or a casting difference. Wasn't really enough to bug me, although I may drill them out to make them match up better.

Ya know..... we should make a thread for all of us to show off our Adepticonstructs since we are all doing such different things with them.

Finally got time to post more of our battles at adepticon.

Game 3. This time I was paired up with Briancj.. Playing against a Ork hoard. I didn’t get as many pictures as the first two games. Starting to get worn down.

Opening set up

Bold plan initiated. Brian’s Minotaurs drops on the left flank right in the middle of the ork buggies and boys.

Meanwhile the battlewagon rams the center building cauing the objective to become dangerous terrain,. SR destroys BW Boys pile out. Baal pred ( not seen on the right off screen ) starts unloading.

SR get blown up by a lucky Kopter rocket ( who knew?) DC goes into action, Brians minotaurs hold position, ready to make a run for the objective

Overall look at the battle – sorry for the blurry pic.

A single minoutaur still holds the buggies at bay! The buggies don’t advance toward the center. Partially as they piled out and would have to pile in again. The also are facing directly a Vindicator who has move forward to threaten the lane between the building and terrain and Whirlwind who keeps there heads down. They are staying out of range.

View from the other side of the table.

Death company goes to work, Dread gets taken out before it could slice and dice, but the Chaplain leads his men into the fray.

Win for us. Great players. Were friendly and really made this game one of the most enjoyable of the day. Guys I would play anytime.
Was surprised that they took the bait that tied up the left flank and didn’t push forward. Gutsy move by Briancj. They however keep us guessing what was coming next.

Learning for the game. Don’t underestimate them puny Kopters..

Are any of the Wardens in range of the Nova Open?

Looks like I'll be playing in the GT with a Dreadnought Drop Pod list, just got approval for my conversions

My world in the timeframe of the Nova Open is going to be dominated by getting Artemis: The Spaceship Bridge Simulator to and from GenCon, alas.
