The basic premise of the project is that each group gets to write about a particular civil war/rebellion going on within The Hartknell System.

The synopsis is that an Inquisitor has erected a blockage against the system. Determining that many of the citizens inhabiting the star system are falling under the sway of Chaos, he has ordered the planetary governors to decimate those he feels are too far gone into the grip of heresy.

This proves devastating, as the star system devolves into anarchy and chaos. Civil war erupts on all the planets as factions form, some of them in support of the Inquisition, others fighting for their very lives as death squads descend upon their homelands, purging millions through brimstone and fire. Even the planetary governors are divided as some take the side of rebels and lead a vicious guerrilla war against what they perceive is Imperial tyranny.

Each group gets to write a story about a civil war going on within their own planet. The 2-3 writers team up to create and fashion a story about the uprising and subsequent war. You may use pretty much anything at your disposal to create the civil war upon the planet, making it a first person perspective or perhaps a series of documents describing the events that unfold upon the planet. Maybe you take the role of a refugee or perhaps a misguided soldier fighting the war on the wrong side. It is up to the group to decide what happens and how it goes.

Through the process the group should work together, deciding who writes what and what you want to write. If you want to write 2-3 separate stories and merge them together, that is fine! All we ask is that you explain somewhere what the factions are fighting for and define each faction somewhere in the writing. It can be as blunt or as subtle as you want it. The idea being that it is a civil war you are writing about and the concept is that as a group, you write about that civil war.

As a group, editing and proofreading, offering suggestions and tips is all totally okay! The idea is to grow as a writer by tackling a challenging piece of writing.

The group can write as much as they want, but the total contribution should be at least 1,000 words per person.

To form a group, PM a contributor from the list at the start of the thread. The group can have up to three members. Once a group is formed, PM me with the group and a rough idea of what you want to work on and I'll post it under the Project header here.

If you cannot find a team member, we'll reach out to others not already in a group and work towards getting you a partner.

Me and purplefood will be working on intertwining the disparate stories together to make the various fictions read as one longer novella length work.

There is no time stamp for completion, so no worries about rushing the final result.

Any questions or comments, you are more than welcome to post or discuss here, your group threads, or via PM.

Would this be along the lines of a section of articles for fiction? If so, it already exists, though probably rarely used and likely not updated for quite a while unfortunately.

I am curious about the idea, however.

What this would be is a collaborative effort by a group of writers to produce quality fanfictions for the DakkaDakka community.

We may in time turn works of fiction into articles for easy perusing, but the focus is to advance the Fiction forum, producing both quality writers and quality fictional pieces.

Contributions will begin soon once I know who we have on board. Then we can start brainstorming for an initial project.

Perkustin wrote:Sounds Glorious! Looking forward to updates.

Hopefully, this will span a large segment of the community either in participation or simply reading.

The current goal right now is to get at least a half dozen people involved, especially at least two with decent editing/English background. Then we collaborate on what we want to produce and agree upon a flexible timespan before we present it to the community.

Anyone can participate in this, no matter the skill level!

The idea of the Collections of Trazyn (have to come up with a better name!) is to promote a collective effort in storytelling and creative writing. We would create stories and more importantly, help aid and edit the works of aspiring writers in furthering them along in their path to create literary works to the tune of fantasy, sci-fi, fiction or whatever works that the Dakka community typically reads.

The critical part to all this though is the collaborative effort. To define us from just simply being writers and editors who slap a label on ourselves, the ultimate project I'd like to embark upon are stories and anthologies created by the group that not only grow us as writers, but also give novella length stories for Dakka Dakka.

Ideas I've had are as said above, an anthology of works around a particular theme, stories where each writer contributes a chapter to the progressive development of one character, and workshop sessions that help developing writers improve upon their skills.

I think it would better to advise, as if we all shall go for one word of describing a char, he would get totally broken. So I wouldn't recommend that layout.

Then again I regard myself as fine with coming up with ideas, I'm not so fine at writing.

I think the collaboration around a particular theme would be cool to work on, kinda like the BL books "Legends of the Space Marines" or "Victories of the Space Marines" or something like that.
I must agree on Beaviz. It might be difficult for a bunch of authors to share one character, as they will all have a different interpretation of how the character would act.

Yeah, I'd probably ruin the character by making them go bat gak crazy or adding in some horrible flaw or mutation or something. I prefer to write with very messed up people.

Maybe we could all write around one big event, like the Chaos invasion of a planet. Like there would be the scheming Planetary Governor, trying to escape unscathed. Then there would be the Genestealer Cult leader, infinitely frustrated that chaos arrived before the Tyranids. Then there could be some poor PDF Soldiers, doomed from the start. Then there could be the Necrons awakening beneath the surface. Then there could be the Astartes rushing to get there in time. Then there could be the psychotic Traitor Legionnaires seeking sacrifices for their dark gods. Then there could be the Orks attracted by the carnage.

Then it would probably end in some big fight ending either ambiguously or with everyone dead.

What about a planet being invaded by Tyranids?
We could have the genestealer cult, the Inquisitor, any particular guard regiments brought in, maybe an SM company, the planetary governor trying to escape, the uncounted billions in the hives fighting for survival and finally those they managed to pull off the planet before it was consumed...

That could work also. I guess we should come up with as many options for a story as possible and then make a poll, but I'm too lazy to right now. Maybe someone else can?

I'll join. Admittedly, I enjoy a more optimistic take on the setting, but darkness is still a requisite. I just find that you connect more with characters when they have hope and optimism. Doesn't mean that I won't put them through hell however.

If Space Marines should be involved, I think it would be prudent with the Deathwatch, as else we get 21 companies from 13 chapters.

Should the Planetary Governor be competent or incompetent?

I agree Arcsquad12 I like to read about the chars, virtues and vices. That's cool. Though I wonder how it will look, I mean a dozen different opinions on fluff here. This can end with 12 bans as easily as great stories.

Good initiative purplefood!

Once we get an idea going here and approved by the group, let's start it up and see where we go with it.

Hopefully we can also get some of the group to peer review others works and then help edit the final product to wrap it all together.

I'm not sure how far we should be, whether people want to volunteer for being editors that people can PM/bugger to help them clean up their writing and a person to post these collected stories to Articles in order to preserve them to DakkaDakka.

Opinions needed!

You can make a story about good times then. Nurgle and Orks for instance take all this grim darkness with a grain of salt. They're just here to have fun.

Shadowbrand wrote:Only 40k? I'd like to try my hand at writing a short WHFB story.

It can be also Fantasy and non-GW related fiction. Admittedly, it is on the light side here, but perhaps this is the chance to get some good solid non-40k fluff going for the community!

I think we're starting with the anthology project first; starting with the creation of stories based around a theme. Once we get a general consensus, then we'll go ahead and start laying down the groundwork for what to write.

I'll help out if i can. I like the idea of an overarching theme tieing all of the stories together. I don't mind writing up a few bits about the Orks, PDF and the humble citizens. I haven't written 40k fiction before, but I always get good grades for my writing, and my previous sci fi stuff has been well received.

Excellent!

I have been thinking of asking people if they wanted to be full time editors/critics such that it would help with the objective of improving writing skills and the quality of the fluff.

LoneLictor wrote:I'm scared and confused. Someone tell me what to do (using small words).

Pick a partner (or 2 people for a total of 3 writers), come up with some ideas on what you want to write about and how you will do it (will you all cover the same events, will you all write from the same perspective (ie from the imperial side), will you write "after the fact" or will you be writing a first person account, etc), then get on with writing.

Just as an example, Perkustin and I have come up with a planet/background, several factions which will be involved (and a rough idea of how they will get involved), and are just deciding on how we are going to write about the events (ie to do more of an overview piece, or something more personal) and how we are going to "write together" - are we going to each write separate accounts and then combine them, are we going to write about the same thing from different perspectives so they stand alone, are we going to write a paragraph/section each (tag team), etc...

Like Silver said, you can do pretty much anything.
Off the top of my head:
Chaos or gene-stealer motivated rebellion, protagonists find out and struggle to stop them.
Regular rebellion with DE interference, protagonists find out and try to free their friends whilst trying to stay alive themselves.
During the confusion of a rebellion an force of Eldar are hunting for a relic, a representative of the Mechnicus teams up with some Arbites to stop them as the Eldar manipulate the war to their own ends.
etc etc

Hm I want High-Inqusitior Selpid of Ordo Malleus involved in the high-up stuff, as he is quite important to my fluff.

Background: He was a young Inquisitor during the First War for Armageddon. He has an immense desire to not repeat the Inquisition's mistakes there, as he saw the atrocity committed there by his fellow Inquisitors. He saw Carrus and Ionza in a vision provided by the Emperor as Yarrick failed to execute von Strab in the Second War for Armageddon. He is a sympathetic Palpatine in a different version of space, and not to be trifled with as if else he would send Carrus and Ionza on you, or just electrocute you to death like he did with four Inquisitors at Armageddon right after the first war, when they wanted to just exterminate his Storm-Troopers. He concealed that they got away.

If it's any consolation, I'm dropping that SM-chapter I made, along with other rather wacky things. They don't fit in anymore, and when we have decided on the planet's name where the Freudakian 81st. and their members shall be dispatched, then Selpid will make his entry. I plan to have the chap as a background guy, but he would no doubt take interest in the fact of a whole system getting shut off. And it can create some tension for it all as he is indeed a complicated fellow.

Of course I respect that you should discuss it with WarOne purplefood, but I'm showing that I'm leaving out the more wacky elements.

Hmm...you could incorporate the Inquisitor into the stories of your own group's rebellion/civil war.

He could also appear as an intermediate between the overarching story and the stories we'll do to connect each rebellion/civil war.

The story itself is gonna be very innocuous. Ground eye view from a grunt who has no clue what's really going on apart from the vaguest excuses given by the higher ups. Right now, I need confirmation if we have a desert planet and an ice planet. Just names, no details.

TheRobotLol wrote:So how, roughly, are all of these gonna ties together?

Your completed story gets added into a much larger work that deals with the following plot:

The Inquisitor at root of the star system's problems is taking orders from a Sector Commander nominally being served by a third party within the Imperial Hierarchy. As the stories are finished, we'll place them in a sequential order, showing how each story produced affects the overall plot. The finale begins when the last story group crosses the finishing line.

When the stories are complete, what happens is is that me and purplefood will work your finished story into the greater plot, interweaving them together to form a much larger narrative. We'll discuss with you guys how the story interacts with the much larger plot.

The idea is to create one large, community driven story that as a finished product is something that we can then present to the forums for enjoyment and reading.
