Not seen another review thread yet (though I've been purposefully avoiding Off Topic in case I stumbled across a spoilerific discussion about the film), so thought I'd start one.
In four words... a fantastic superhero movie... albeit one that probably needed four prequels to get it off the ground (newcomers may find it a bit rushed). It occurred to me on the way home why I enjoyed it so much. It's basically the superhero version of Seven Samurai i.e. recruitment followed by training / getting a feel for each other followed by the big arse battle. In much the same way as Seven Samurai, each one of these sections feels important to the film which means by the time we reach the big arse battle, you feel the film has really earned it (most blockbusters fail on this latter point IMHO).
All seven () principal characters get a decent amount of screen time to flesh out their characters. I thought the film would struggle with Black Widow, but Joss Whedon (who is after all master of this kind of character) does her proud and she definitely doesn't look out of place come the final dust up.
And what a dust up it is. Where I find fault with most blockbusters is that come the big arse battle. there rarely seems to be much of a point to it within the context of the story. Now Avengers doesn't do anything particularly original here but there is at least an obvious goal or two to accomplish. Also, where other blockbusters struggle to find a role for all of their participants, each Avenger gets properly stuck in, probably because all their powers / skills are a variation on hitting things
All in all, one of the most enjoyable blockbusters I've seen in ages and in superhero movie terms, I'd put this up there with Superman, X2 and The Dark Knight.
Finally, regarding the obligatory post credits (actually mid credits in this case) teaser clip, can anyone tell me...
Spoiler:
...who the red faced alien guy is? I'm not really up on my comic book lore
Aside from the Hulk films, I'd say Captain America was the weakest of the Marvel films, Iron man 1+2 definitely topping the lot. Thor had some funny moments, and the action was decent, the plot seemed a bit dragged out though.
Lord Scythican wrote:How did you all see it early? Some sort of pre-screener?
I haven't seen it, but the reviews from IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes all suggest that is is a very good superhero film.
That is good news. I really have liked all the latest marvel movies. Iron Man 1 &2 were my favourites followed by The Hulk, Thor, and then Captain America. I have felt like they have declined a little over the last few that has came out, so I am glad the reviews are looking good for The Avengers. I only wish Edward Norton would have been in it...
Now I'm mad that I have to wait another week for the midnight release here in America.
Think I'm gonna have to try and avoid the hell out of Off-Topic for a while to avoid spoilers. Thanks, by the way, for putting all spoilers in spoiler tags.
I'm probably going to catch a bit of flak here, but I wasn't a huge fan to be honest. The Black Widow and Hawkeye seemed to play diminished roles in comparison to the Hulk and Iron Man (that is to say, non-vital roles), and the end conflict was resolved with the magical application of a Deus Ex Machina.
Pyrogeist wrote: ...and the end conflict was resolved with the magical application of a Deus Ex Machina.
Really? How so? Are we talking about...

...the "back door" built into the portal machine? If so fair play, but it didn't really bother me, because the main resolution in my eyes was a good old fashioned nuclear missile for which Deus Ex Machina doesn't apply because there's always one of those kicking about
It was very much a Joss Whedon film though, not that I'm complaining.
I would say that Whedon seems to have altered Tony Starks personality a little.
Spoiler:
I laughted so hard at the bit where after Thor and Hulk have just finished killing one of the robotic Wyrm things, theres a pause and then hulk just does a quick sideways punch and sends Thor flying.
If it is Thanos and you liked the movie but aren't familiar with the Marvel Universe, you should google "The Infinity Gauntlet", which was a really great miniseries (it was then followed by 2 horrible sequels).
I can't believe I have to fething work on opening night! Sigh, I was going to go dressed as Captain America too...I guess I'll go on the following Monday, minus the costume. Sigh...
I'm glad it's getting such high ratings though-I was really looking forward to it, but such a large cast with a lot of big heroes could face serious damage when utilizing each person-glad this isn't the case. It sounds like Joss has done it again-next Monday can't come soon enough.
Also, I liked Captain America-I was suprised-I thought I'd hate it, due to the actor, but I thought it was great when it finished. Thor was great, Cap was better, Iron Man 1 was Marvel's top movie, Spiderman 2 and X2 were high up there, and so was Norton's Hulk, and even the Tom Jane Punisher was awesome; although it didn't make a big show in the theater, everyone I know owns a copy of it. DD, Elektra, old Hulk, FF, X3, S-M3...we won't go there. And I liked the first Ghost Rider-not amazing, but not as bad as everyone claims.

Spot on.
Spoiler:
I didn't feel it was explained well, and it just seemed too convenient considering he was under mind control yet he consciously created it.
I just got back from the theater. I thought the movie was really good. I haven't seen Thor, Captain America, or the two Hulks, (or Iron Man 2 for that matter), but I thought it was great, and you don't really need to see the other ones to get it (although I'm familiar with the comics, so that wasn't a big deal).
I like Thor in the comics, and I was afraid I wouldn't like his film version, but I actually thought Thor was really done. Epic
feeling, without being too cheesy.
Hulk is probably my least favorite Marvel character, but I thought he was brilliantly done in the Avengers.
There were a lot of really strong moments, and a lot of good humor I thought. It was well done, because it was inserted in a way that didn't make it seem stupid or cheesy.
Iron Man is definitely the rock star of the group, but I thought all of the heroes were well done. Definitely one of the best super hero movies to come out lately.
Spoiler:
Someone already mentioned it, but it's a really awesome moment when the Hulk tangles with Loki.
@ Hordini - You should check out Thor, it's more low key than the Avengers, but I thought it was the strongest of the prequels and it adds depth to the Thor/Loki dynamic displayed in the current film. Plus, you know, Natalie Portman
Flashman wrote:@ Hordini - You should check out Thor, it's more low key than the Avengers, but I thought it was the strongest of the prequels and it adds depth to the Thor/Loki dynamic displayed in the current film. Plus, you know, Natalie Portman
Yeah, after seeing Avengers, I think I will definitely check out the Thor film. As I said, I always did like Thor in the comics, but I skipped the film because I was afraid it would be a bit too ridiculous. But after hearing on Dakka and elsewhere that it was actually pretty good, and really enjoying Thor's performance in the Avengers, I'm going to give it a chance.
I thought the film was epic, but what most impressed me was how everyone got to do something and everyone had their moment to shine. No one, to me at least, felt they had been pushed into the background.
And yeah, if you're a Hulk fan, this movie does him justice. He's both funny and awesome.
And I'm glad that the trailers didn't give away as much as I thought they would.
Spoiler:
All that stuff on the helicarrier I knew nothing about, and the fact that we got a Thor v Hulk fight was just brilliant!
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I don't really care about spoilers!
Not sure when I'm going to get to see this one. The next few weeks are
going to be busy. Glad to hear that it's good. (Don't read my spoiler. It's
not really a spoiler)

Being a comic book/animation geek, Ive also watched the 2011 cartoon series of the avengers, and I thought that was excellent as well.
The second episode where Graviton just keeps on pouring more and more gak onto the Hulk and is utterly stunned by him getting steadily more pissed until he leaps up and smashes him defines what is awesome about the Hulk. Not bad for a kids TV show.
Sure its a little immature at times, and the wasp is persistently annoying, but if your mega into the Avengers I suggest picking it up.
The same goes for Genndy Tartakovsky clone wars cartoons as well by the way, I enjoyed those two dvds far more than Lucas last three SW films.
The 3D wasn't as terrible as in Thor and a big part of the film is actually pretty bright, so the dark glasses don't hurt the movie as much as they do in other films. I'll still support 2D movies whenever I can though.
Automatically Appended Next Post: A question for the American viewers. I believe there'll be another extra scene after the credits, apart from the already mentioned reveal.
Would you be so kind and tell us what happens in such a scene if you happen to see it? Downey Jr. recently stated they went back to film one more scene after the premiere.

Personally, I'm crossing Fingers for Ant-Man.
That's a good point. I knew there was an extra scene that they filmed, but I forgot that it involved the main cast and
Spoiler:
the scene with the other and "thanos" didn't have them in
, so it should be that theres a post -post-credits scene- scene, on its way.
also, favourite part of the film summed up in two words? "puny god"
I guess I'm going to be the party pooper here, but while it wasn't in any way bad, I think it was far from the better movies Marvel has put out lately. The first half of the movie was slow as hell, and it really picked up around the second half. I liked how the action was very present, while the focus wasn't actually put on the individual battles, but on the larger flow.
What annoyed me was the humour. It was so Josh Whedon-esque that I couldn't stop myself from thinking back to the Angel and Buffy era. But Iron Man saved that a little, his sense of humour actually being quite good and constant.
The pseudo-science babble was horrible. At least it was only during the 1st part of the movie.
All in all, I'd give it a 6.5/10. A good score as far as comic book movies go, but a bit pale in comparison to the new Hulk or both Iron Man I and II.
Ooh I thought up a conspiracy theory!! (it's my first)
Spoiler:
Regarding the fact that Agent Coulson "died" Clark Gregg was in talks regarding Iron Man 3, and was supposedly told by Whedon (according to Gregg) that Coulson would not die in Avengers.
So, I reckon that considering the only direct evidence that we have that hea actually died is from Fury, a man who showed that he was willing to use the death to manipulate people, it's possible that he didn't actually die, and is in a secret hospital somewhere, waiting for Iron Man 3 to start.
That sounds far geekier now that I've written it down.
they did make a show of the blood stain where he was.
yeah but
Spoiler:
It was on the wall, which is only logical considering he was stabbed in the back, and you didn't see any other blood, so I reckon he survived (at least I hope he did)

I never get tired of the Avengers cartoon-the characters are accurately portrayed from their comic book roots. It is a kids' show, made for adult comic book fanatics. Wasp does get a bit annoying at times, but the rest of the characters are 100% spot on. I have no fault with the show, beyond Wasp. I even like the theme song-it's my cell phone ring tone-somebody calls me, and "Avengers Assemble!" calls out, followed by the rest of "fight as one."
So far I've only seen the first two episodes of the Avengers cartoon and was very underwhelmed. On the other hand, it's ot nearly as bad as Ultimate Spider-Man.

Spoiler:
One thing I did note was when Stark was called and he claimed to be a "Life model decoy"
which is a classic bit of SHIELD/Marvel comics tech and therefore provides them with an easy get out clause.
..so.. the cameo/for warning in the credits..
.. we've already seen the gauntlet in passing in Thor... going to be one hell of a fight if they do that story !
Personally I think they'd be better off doing something involving Ultron -- not least as they could squeeze in some other characters quite easily then as well.
Do wonder if this is also a shot across the bows at DC : if they ever get round to doing a JLA movie then Darkseid is the obvious choice for the BIG BAD... who, ironically enough, would wind up looking like a Thanos rip off if Avengers II does feature him.

That is a pretty good point. Though Coulson did bleed... or did he? I'm not sure anymore.
I guess the extra scene which is probably attached to the regular American release could be something with Coulson in it.
I never really liked Ultron as a villian. Though I don't know a lot about him.

Agent Coulson.
Just something to remember about that. (pretty big spoilers below)
Spoiler:
The cards had blood on them, but Coulson also died 'off screen' with Fury saying simply over the intercom 'they've called it'. Later when Maria questions him about the cards, as Coulson didn't have them when he 'died', Fury said 'they just needed a little push'.
I'll bet Coulson turns up in the next Iron Man to a shocked Stark.
I really do wish that Fox would let go of the Fantastic Four rights. If Marvel could get a Fantastic Four film off the ground and do it right (which I assume they would... certainly moreso than Fox did with their efforts), then we could have Dr. Doom as a badguy in the Avengers film. That would be awesome.
Amaya wrote:Captain America was a mess with an extremely boring lead.
Thor was at least decent. Iron Man 1 and 2 were better, but that's just because Robert Downing Jr is awesomeness incarnate.
Amaya and I are in complete agreement.
Agree completely - Cap A was not to my taste..........
Iron Man 1 + 2 were indeed awesome and the Avengers film continued in that vein - I notice the only "girlfriend" that got in was Pepper - the those two have really great on sceen chemistry
They kept Mr Downey off screen enough to give the others a chance and therre werre so many laugh out loud moments and dialogue. Great action. Banner was better and even Hawkeye worked out ok.
It does make me wonder what RD Jnr would have done with Bruce Wayne role
Hmmm..I thought the Cap film was pretty good. Of course me and Cap go waayyyy back. I've pretty much enjoyed all of the super hero films they have been putting out.
Captain America, as a hero, suffers because of Cap'n personality; It never changes. He goes from a Wimpy Patriot to over the top bad ass patriot. He suffers from nothing other than being patriotic. Tony is egotistical and a complete Drunk, Banner is paranoid, Thor was a spoiled rotten brat, but Captain doesn't have any real flaws. It makes him one dimensional, and boring.
I personally thought they did a good job with the movie, though. Still would rank Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man 2, and Captain America in that order, though.
cap has always been the straight man. he never really had a character flaw ever, except is over the top patriotisim and "lawful good/stupid" attitude. his role in various team efforts has always been that of leader and inspiration in the face of overwhelming odds and peril. (check out the maximum carnage series...) i think he is suited towards a role of "straight man" to other characters comedic or other efforts. he is a force multiplier, not a main attraction.
as for his movie, i thought it did very well, all things considered. even with mr smith.. i mean red skull showing up.
what i want to see is a spiderman / avengers movie. if the spiderman reboot turns out to be any good, maybe we will see him team up with one or more of the avengers against a hopefully properly done venom or carnage.
and no, spiderman 3 does not count. that movie has been erased from comic lore and sent to the woodshed for a beating worse then a red headed step child
Do not mention that movie. Venom has so much potential, and that movie WASTED it.
The problem with the Spiderman movies is that it had as many villains as there were movies; 1 had Gobo, 2 had Doc Oct and Hobgoblin, and 3 had Hobgoblin, Venom, and Sand Man. There really wasn't enough room to do each character justice....
Given the choice it just would have been Sandman (and Hobgoblin, ‘cause that needed to be dealt with). Venom would not have been in it. It only gets worse when you get into the “actors hate having masks on”, so we get Spidey losing his mask every 3 seconds, and Topher Grace morphing out of Venom... which was just stupid.
I’d be nice of Marvel had control of X-Men, Spiderman and Fantastic 4, because the cross-over movies would be amazing. I’d love a New Avengers film with Cap, Tony, Spidey and Wolverine rocking around.

I'm surprised you're such a comic geek, H.
Then again, it would explain why you tend to be so bitter about things you love.
And yes, I'd love to see Downey Jr. meet Hugh Jackman too. Not so sure about the new Spider-Man though.
The new spiderman looks great, IMO. I hope we see a 'new' spiderman cameo with the avengers. Could you imagine that boring little gakker Toby Maguire in the Avengers?

Anung Un Rama wrote:I'm surprised you're such a comic geek, H.

The irony of course being that I've never read a Marvel comic in my life.

I dunno about the new Spiderman either - guess we'll just have to wait and see - but as far as Wolverine goes, it could be like that scene in First Class:
"Hello there. I'm Captain Steve Rogers and this is Tony Stark."
"Go feth yourself."
"O...k..."
Saw it for the first time, packed house at a midnight show. There are no superlatives to describe how I was blown away by this movie. I am going to see it again tomorrow. And the next day.
I loved this movie, but it suffered from major flaws.
Spoiler:
Like, BLack Widow and hawkeye, they are thrown in and are seen as important in the film, But we are never given anything about them. So when Hawkeye cont controlled you felt less invested.
But the super heroes where nice together. But so many jokes that i kept facepalming.
For those who wonder what the post credits ending is in the US release:
Spoiler:
You may recall the moment after Tony comes back from space and is awakened by the Hulk yelling in which he says they should all go to some new shawarma restaraunt becuase he had never had shawarma. Cap says they still have something left to do and they go get Loki. In the US release the Thanos scene is before the credits and the post credits scene is all the characters, immediately post battle and still battered and beaten, sitting in the shawarma restaurant just quietly eating. It is a funny scene but hard to describe and get the humour across.
I just got back from seeing the Avengers. Best comic movie to date. I even set it up higher than The Dark Knight, which would have stayed on top if it wasn't for the girl who played Rachel. I couldn't stand her in that movie.
We walked out after 30 minutes because we were bored. not trying to be a buzz kill, but I just couldn't care about any of the characters or what was happening. Will try to rewatch while inebriated on my computer at home and it should go better.

Yeah, if you don't watch any of the other movies, don't expect any character backgrounds info or emotion, it all comes together, Avengers is NOT a stand alone movie. And yes, Hulk is absolutely fantastic and mark ruffalo is the best banner ever. for all time.
Cannerus cant have seen any of the other movies, because Im famously hard to please at the cinema, but even I really enjoyed the Avengers, it was one of the best Superhero movies I have ever seen, and than includes the last two Nolan Batman films.
It wasn't so much Hulk vs. Loki as it was Hulk playing with Loki like an angry spoiled kid trying to destroy a hated rag doll. That was the main reason why at the end he was finally ready for that drink.

Not as smart, but genuinely entertaining.
My friend in Mumbai mailed me a DVD of the movie dubbed in Hindi with English subtitles, it is most hilarious.
I liked it. Frankly, it was kinda dumb and corny, but dumb and corny fun that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's not even in the same league as TDK, IMO.
Spoiler:
Overall, I thought it did a good job giving everyone decent screen time and something to do despite the disparate power levels. Still, Hawkeye's skills got progressively more ridiculous. The Hulk/Thor fight was a personal highlight. In fact, I think they finally got the Hulk and Banner right. Not crazy about the new Cap uniform. I woulda kept it a little more down-and-dirty like the WWII version. The scene in the restaurant after the credits was gold.
Oh..."Clench up, Legolas." Maybe the best line of the movie, and I think half our audience missed it.
Was fairly shocked by Coulson's death, but maybe that opens up an opportunity for a certain blonde SHIELD agent?

Miss Marvel? Wouldn't they need to introduce the Kree to do that?
We never saw Coulson die. We here Fury tell everyone over the radio that the medics pronounced him dead but we never actually see that. We also know that Fury was trying to give them a push and got the vintage cards out of the locker and not from Coulson's pocket as well. My guess he isn't actually dead, as comics tend to do.
Finally saw it this weekend with the boys and babydoll. It was a good.... smart film. Being a Cap fan from waayyyy back I was a bit disapoint in his rendering and the uniform was a bit garish. I know they explained the reason for it in the begining with the "old fashioned" bit, but I don't know, it just didn't translate well from the comic to the screen IMO.
That's just a minor...very minor..gripe from a Cap fan.
Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk were awesome. Cap was good and Hawkeye was mediocre.

It doesn't help that Thor bored me and I literally bailed and went to surf the web in the middle of Captain America (the wife just fell asleep). I liked Hulk and especially Iron Man and Iron Man II, but the other ones were meh to me.
