One of my most recently completed Angels Infernus and the first memeber of the Devastator Squad to be painted up I present my Devastator Sergeant for comments and critisism, its also the fire set of Decals I've used on my marines so the shine is pretty glaring, but will be dulled with varnish hopefully.

Thanks, I was pretty happy with how the banner turned out, unfortunately the lettering on it is the smallest transfer lettering I have to hand, so the rest of the squads shoulder pads would have to be done freehand (scary)

Very, very nice model, but I hope for your sake that you aren't using him in a non-fun game...

Post by: Melcavuk
I realised midway through painting him that I had no room in my 500 point list (semi competitive) for Devastators much less a more expensive Sarge in a Devastator unit. Right now he's demoted to a flavour piece rather than a competitive choice.

The top-knot kind of kills it for me. I would advise a little thinning of the paints, for example on his fore-head the paint could be a little smoother.
Nice mini though!

Thanks guys, I know he's not perfect but he really works well in my schemes colours and came out far better than I had hoped. Despite the fact he may never see a game on the battlefield, unless I get giddy with power and decide a tooled up Dev sarge isnt a waste of point, but for now he makes a nice showy piece.
I'll do my best to improve my skin texturing on the next barehead.

Cheers, sadly I should not be left alone with a bits box and no planned list late at night, else I end up with a model that I feel looks awesomely cool but the reality of having a ranged squads sergeant waving a power weapon is less than optimal. Even switching him out to a tactical Sarge wouldn't make the build all that useful. Still he's cool.

I have also painted up an 8 man tactical squad, whilst not currently game legal due to being missing 2 more bolter marines I am quite happy with those that have been done and based. Two of the marines were more of a chore to paint than others but as a squad they work.
I understand that some people are very picky with wanting to have gun barrels drilled out, however I have ruined a few guns in the past by doing so and am content to lose the realism of undrilled barrels on these guys if it means keeping my models intact.

Re barrels, we all been there, you will go back because it will bug you, just drill a tiny bit, take drill off, then drill in a bit more, that way you will know exactly where the hole will be. You can get consistently where you want it that way.

Thanks, I couldn't help thinking of Grey Knights when the scheme progressed, Silver and red seems to be pretty much their signature colour scheme, though hopefully with a more beaten metal look instead of pristine knights there is enough of a difference to be OK. And given that apparent rarity of the grey knights in the 40K universe I figure that another chapter is bound to have similar colours.

Maybe it seems a little off because it is uncharacteristic for the missile launcher to be affixed to a marines backpack. It is definitely different and the heigth of the model standing next to other marines is probably throwing you off. Looks like these missiles would be more ordinance/barrage type....which wouldnt be a thing. As before, nice looking model

The Launcher represents a proto-type automated launcher currently undergoing rigerous testing on the field, its not really designed to be reloaded in a hurry. The field limitation on single missile fire is only during prototyping, the final model would have the restriction lifted and the Wall Breaker class launcher would be designed to level a wall/building/task force with no survivors, thus negating the need to reload

The on-the-back-missile-pack thing was really a kitbash that I carried on a little way further when I ran out of actual missile launchersand lacked the funds to purchase a spare kit off of ebay. I'll admit it isnt exactly pretty nor does it resemble the actual kit but it did say missile launcher to me and seemed to line up OK with WYSIWYG if questionable in the whole LOS of the weapon. The Dev's likely wont see a game however until they receive a serious boost.
They were mainly used as a test for my colour scheme across full armour as opposed to the half cover utilisted in the tacticals.
Fortunately I have my new kits on order for a techmarine and some snipers that will make their way here in due course and will actually feature in a usable list! (yay for army planning). I hope to have a patrol force ready for just after 6th hits.

What bugs me most about it is the horizontal skull on the front. Just doesn't look right.
The way the launcher sticks out above the wearer is a bit disconcerting too. Maybe if you lowered it slightly, maybe incorporate the backpack into the launcher?
If the barrels bug you but you don't want to drill them, just apply a dab of black to the front of the muzzle. That goes a long way
Let me finish by saying the overall quality of the paintwork and modelling is excellent!

I agree the back missile launcher is probably not as good as it could have been, but as with everything its something to learn from, and since he isn't an overly hideous model he wont be banished to the bitz box just yet, merely positioned somewhere near the back of the display cabinet until he redeems himself.
As for more recent projects, I have now completed my Master of the Forge models for my patrol force, he took a while and at times I regretted committing to painting the servo harness due to all of its nooks and crannies but the end result is something I am proud of. It has been pointed out that he blends too well with the rest of the army to be a stand out HQ, but I enjoy the colour scheme on him. I opted just to go metal/gold on the harness, making it look allot more beat up than the rest of him armour as it is something perhaps harder to pull together and maintain in the field.

Heh, initially it was sat there with the intention of "strapping" it to his back as a trophy, when I put it together both the scout and the skull seemed to be eyeing down the same way so the skull took up residence there. Cheers, I'm really enjoying the project and thus far my completion rate is nearing 100% (only one assembled model who isnt painted, and he's likely not going to be used anyway).
Something a little different to add to the party now, anyone who saw my P&M Belial would have known this was coming soon. I've finished painting him up as Angels Infernus now and am really happy with how he turned out, terminators are in the post now so I had a good couple of days to just focus on my Belial.
The shield isnt my best work, and has already been painted and repainted (I tried red originally and it failed massively). The green lines are necron decals designed to look like exposed circuitry and the storm shield, though they do tend to look a little toobusy when photographed. He is completed now, however should I ever procure a decal suitable for his banner that will be added.

Oh wow.. I love that Belial - especially what you've done with the stormshield. Often when you put red & green on the same model it ends up looking like Christmas, but here the colours are sufficiently desaturated and detached from each other that you managed to avoid that. It's a great model.

The Halo is remarkably flimsy, if push comes to shove and he doesnt work with it I can prise it off with ease (though I'd rather not). Local guys are alright with anything mildly off so it shouldnt call me issues there, however for tourney play I may have to prise it off.

It really shouldnt cause ANY issues locally. If it does, maybe those players should go back to their parents basements and rethink their perspective on the game and why they play it! I had no idea tournaments were that anal about an iron halo.....ridiculous.

Post by: Melcavuk
I had been informed of the similarities to the Guardians scheme in the past, it was purely coincidental but having come from various armies predviously red and metals were my most experienced colours and so combining them into a scheme was my best bet at a reasonable looking army. Not that I am opposed to resembling another chapter (especially a dark angels one). I have had people remark of similarities between both the guardians and grey knight schemes.
By trying to introduce more variations into gold and bone aswell as the red and silver I'm trying to vary the scheme a little.

I was under the impression that power swords were now replaced with the option for power weapons (axe included) and modelled as such? (I am however inexperienced with the new powerr weapon rules) The axe is from the terminator upgrade pack from forgeworld. £14 for the kit but I needed the hammer/shield for my bellial and the combi weapons will be surfacing on other models.

Post by: leohart
You are correct. The new rule allows you to model a "Power Weapon" option in the codex as either
Power Sword
Power Axe
Power Maul
Power Lance
In this case, your terminator captain will have a Power Axe (Str +1, AP2).
The problem is the Dark Angel codex is so old, the Army List entry actually tells you that the Sergent has a "Power Sword". I wouldn't sweat it though. Dark Angel should come out by next April. Until then, you just tell you opponent that it is a Sword.

Yes, normally you can use any form of power weapon, but only if it states "power weapon" in the entry. For DW terminator sergeants, it states power sword specifically.
