They are absolutely stunning! and such a beautiful style of painting you do! I am very impressed and simply love how they look, the colour choice is so totally different to anything I've seen on Necrons before and surprisingly works perfectly (for me) I can't wait to see more of these excellent models!

these guys have a real comic book feel to them. never seen them like this but have often seen necrons (armies/models/etc)
that aren't metallic/green. some fine examples (this one included)
are to be found in the gallery section of this fine website (also google, flickr etc) but overall IMO really done a great job.

I really like the looks of the foot soldiers. Very different and very striking. Your army will be noticed by anyone walking by,and most likely remembered too. However, the vehicles I think should have been done in the same manner as the weapons on them. The pilots/drivers are not even noticed. Overall, great.

I really like the effect...almost makes them look cartoony but not in a bad way.
Intentional or not the result is stunning. I love the armour (nice blending ) and the NMM like effect on the guns is outstanding.
I like the choice of all your colours except for me it's not working as much as it could on the base. The purple is just too unrealistic, although it does work with the rest of the colours to a degree.

Post by: riplikash
Very stylized and animated looking, I like it.
My one gripe is the shading. If you are going to a glowing, magma look, shouldn't you be reverse shading, e.g. the low points of the model are hotter and brighter than the high points? You did that on some of your vehicles. I would have enjoyed seeing it carried over to the rest of the army.

I wasn't so sure about these until I reached the scarabs- they are beautiful.
I'm in agreement with earlier in that the pilots do look lost on the vehicles, at first I just thought you hadn't put them on yet.

thanks guys, I must admit the barge pilots were the first experimental models I painted, then chose to stick with them because I wanted to see how far I could improve, that and I'm lazy that way!
The other point about the scheme disparity between vehicles and models, I guess you are quite correct, I did try the same scheme when I started, having a darker edge, it just didnt have quite the same feel of 'molten magma' as they do now, just google magma and have a look, there really is a transition between super dark to super bright, funnily enough, seemingly random and inconsistent at times.
I'm working on the super elite immortal squad now, starting with 'captain america' as I like to call him, so stay tuned!

I am sorry, I am not a fan of that painting style at all. Its to bright and unattractive. IMHO.
Not to take away from the paint job though. It looks like you did a good job painting them. Just not my style.
Especially the one HQ, the cape mixes with the model himself and looks like a blob of yellow and orange and red.
This one.
It just blends all together. would be better to dee the cape a different color.

Outstanding!!
The effect is visually stunning and I can imagine that with them on the table nobody is looking at the opposition! Almost hypnotising.
My one criticism (which is really more observation than criticism) is that because your vehicles and their operators are indentical colours and shades its a bit like looking for Wally That said this may be the effect you were after? But as I said its not really a criticism and in no way does the effect detract from the awesome overall effect.
Huge Fan!!!

I've tried to make living metal be magma, hence the identical pilots and barges, I guess fluff wise it would make sense, artistically I dont want to confuse the viewer, but initially trying multiple paint schemes seemed to be inconsistent at best, which is why I chose a very uniform scheme across the board.
I have updated my Necron lord's warscythe, I hated the original and chose to use my blue shceme on the blade, see what you think!
Two new Crypteks! I chose the illuminator as a cryptek, fluff wise he is one but he's a terrible HQ, so might as well right?
Two new immortals, Pincer and Captain America!
and a group shot of the new five! Up next, Varguard Obyron,
so stay tuned!

First off all let me say that you have a very original necron army there and I really admire the amount of work you have put into this. There is no easy way to blend, and blending a whole model one at a time is really painstaking and time consuming.
I have shorted out those two pics for a reason. First the cape defines the model much better now that it is a different color than the rest of the model. Second I would try to break up the yellow orange red scheme using some green exactly as the
one on the back of the model in the second pic. Green is the complementary of red so they stick great on your model. Maybe try putting some in the joints so the eye can track the models body more easily. Anyway thats my two cents and
congrats for this great army.

Heavy Red [4:1] followed by a wash of Red shade [6:1]
Heavy Blue [3:1] then washed with Blue Shade [5:1]
Cleaned with Bloody Red [4:1]
2x Sombre Grey + 2x Magic Blue + 1x Black [5:2]
Large layer of Hot Orange [4:1]
Large layer of Magic Blue [3:1]
Skipped a pic here, sorry! :armata_PDT_04:
Medium layer of Orange Fire [4:1] then small layer of Gold Yelow [3:1]
Medium layer of 1x Magic Blue + 1x Electric Blue [2:1] then Electric Blue [2:1] then highlighted with 1x Electric Blue + 1x Wolf Grey [2:1]
Highlight of Sun Yellow [6:1]
Very marginal highlight of Wold Grey [4:1]
As you can see, a fair few steps
Bases are done with a run of:
Heavy Blue [4:1]
Hexed Lichen [3:1] (just dumped everywhere)
3x Hexed Lichen + 1x Squid Pink [3:1] Thick highlights
Cracks filled with GW Lustrian Undergrowth, then:
Livery Green [2:3]

I love the idea of the Necron with the split head still able to carry on fighting but it doesn't fit in with the exceptionally clean and crisp look of your army.
And that giant hammer looks a bit daft, looks like it's just dumped on their for no reason.
I'm still amazed by your colour blending techniques though!

Post by: insaniak
That's some bright Necrons.
The orange is quite stunning, and up close looks fantastic, but as a full army I think it lacks a little needed contrast. It all just devolves into a mass of orange. I think they need a little more shading into the creases and joints, so that it's easier to see detail from further away.
Really love the orange with the blue detailing, though.

First off can I just say
A first I wasn't too sure. The single miniatures that you had posted just kind of blended into each other and the just seemed to 'blob' together. If you get me?.....
But I perservered and boy am I glad I did, ya see, the single minis are nice, not outstanding but nice. But when you see the army as a whole it all makes sense.... Like a tidal flow of magma with guns.... It's pretty awesome stuff, and when I read that you take 7-8 hours per basic warrior? That damn near blew my mind dude... Great army and awesome looking vehicles. Great job!

amazing how such a simple technique (drybrushing) can bring such amaaaaazing creations. They seriously look like theyre molten hot. So awesome!
EDIT: Actually even more amazing that its Necrons, since theyre usually the army people grab because they scream "Paint me the least!" out of all the races.
Clearly i didnt even think of that when i picked mine (orks) lol but i enjoy painting them anyway.

This is a great, unconventional approach to the 'crons. I really like the pop of color on them, but I am inclined to agree with Gray1378, in that, I'm not crazy about the bases. That being said, they look great. I'd love to see them on a battlefield.

The orange is very, very nice. I'll chime in with insaniak and agree that, as I look at it more, I feel like the army lacks some contrast to make the army shots look less like a mass of orange.
29816
Post by: khengoolman
I appreciate all your comments guys, they push me to try and do better every time!
In response to your comment, that's why on my more recent models I've been using more and more blue, I find it compliments the overall scheme without taking too much away.
49848
Post by: Conrad Turner
And I love the fact you have squeezed a little comedy out of your army. Not only is the colour scheme fantastic - now you've added the blue into things like capes - but you have added little flashes of inspiration to add spice to the army.
Love the guy who's snapped his weapon in half and the one who's broken his tip off even more than the siamese twin.
Not so sure that Thor works, and I think that the Captain America shield is just out of place. I would have thought that with the obvious talent you have, it wouldn't have taken much to 'Necrontyr' the idea and had a Necron symbol there for a Necron version of the Avengers.
29816
Post by: khengoolman
Captain America is the biggest eye catcher when people look at the troops. At a glance, on the table top, it's hard to pick up the 'little' things I've done, but he's easily the most spotted guy, no matter where he goes

I know little about paint techniques but were you going for the sort of cell shaded look Nard has with his Nids?
Looks good either way.
29816
Post by: khengoolman
It's a comic style look, high contrast tends to pop really well on the tabletop.
Mostly the red to orange transition is meant to show molten lava.
I've been improving on the technique as I've learned to apply it more quickly and effectively. Now I essentially paint the model a colour, then the next, but instead of trying to brush the next colour to create a smooth transition, I just mix the two and draw a thin line between them. I've used this technique on the stalker, Anrakyr, Imotekh and the flyers, and they easily have the best transition (especially in large flat areas..

except for the weapons it really dose look like they walked out of the magma!

Yeah fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your view), the armoury weapons are not living metal and thus were not altered to magma form. This is why ceramic weapons are grey and phase altering weapons are blue.

Still you haven't touched the superheroes that much, which balances it I like that!
Great army, really, nice blending, for the bases, go for something normal, leave the comic idea a bit maybe. They are Magma crons, give them scorched and dead bases, It' will live them up, the purple, honestly, it kinda gaks on your army :p it's so cool, and the purple bases kill it a bit, no matter what your goal is!
