So in celebration of summer and the new found time some people may find themselves with, I have decided to host a painting competition based entirely around Malifaux!

So here is the deal (and the rules)

Starting June 16th 2012 all participants will have exactly one month to prime, paint and base their model and then submit a picture before Midnight EST July 16th to be judged by myself and three lucky guest judges by score card for different qualities of the over all piece.

What needs to happen for you to be eligible-
*You need to announce your interest in being apart of the competition on the board
*You need to have the model unpainted (but may be primed) before starting the competition and must submit a picture of the model with a time stamp, either here on the board or by PM (if ya want to keep your model a secret)
* The model must be at least 67% Wyrd products (But your welcome to mix and match the different sets)
*The model should be painted entirely by you and since we have no better way we will be going with the honor system.
*You must submit a final photo of the finished model (with time stamp) onto the board before July 16th 2012

That is basically it when it comes to the rules!

Now I am not made of money but the winner of the competition will receive a personalized certificate of their accomplishment (not to mention we will make a big deal about it here on dakka) a character standard single infantry figure done by Ifalna, $5.00 from myself and will be announced by our very own JoeyBerry on her Malifaux Monday special following competition completion! (there may be more to come!)

Looks like a great competition with a star studded judge line up.

Only thing is a month to pick up and paint a mini seems a bit short notice.

We were thinking that since people did have a decent amount of time with summer that 1 month should be decent enough, That way people would be finished before school started back up in August.

I've had this Dead Justice Lady J sitting on my Table for some time now. I think I shall throw my hat into the ring with her.
ah hell... I'll have to get a pic of the rest of the Dead Justice crew since I've now convinced myself that I just can't do Lady J by herself.

Thanks for the "welcoming" and I certainly hope this isn't taboo but I'm posting 2 update pictures showing my work in progress. Though I do have a concern what will happen to this "contest" if no one really takes any interest other than the 2 or 3 people posting here?


Here is Lady Justice with base color's built up and skin more or less done though I believe I might add another tone to the skin to build up that Undead pallor.



And here is a weak group shot, since there is nothing to report about the Judge or Death Marshals since all I've managed to achieve on them so far is the skin/bone base color's.



and critique is welcomed though there is not much to go on.

I have no doubt about us having some people throwing their hats into the ring, I feel even if we have 6 people or 60 either way I think there will be some awesome models and some pretty sweet prices regardless..

Sounds good, I'd love to give this a go. I've got my third Seamus model on order (obsessed? Me?), so as I've painted all my other Malifaux models I'll do him Will post a pic of him in his bare metal glory as soon as he arrives.

Is that Lord Chompy Bits in the Background or a Tyranid?

I'm going to say it's LORD CHOMPY BITS!

I'm voting Daemon Prince. LCB doesn't have ridges on his tail.

It's also on a 40k style base instead of the usual curved lip. I also remember LCB's legs being a bit bulkier and the cloak being a touch shorter as well as him having something at the end of his tail. Also it looks plastic.

I know my painting skills won't allow me to win this competition. But I like seeing these kinds of things on Dakka, and would love to support the Malifaux community here as well. I ordered a secret special model for this and it should arrive tomorrow. I'll update with a picture when it arrives.

Primed. Fig is all Wyrd, base uses gw bits to make bayou jetty (3 skaven shields, a csm termie spike rack and old, old skeleton torso - oh, and Ophelia's tab to make the jutting bit of wood) - that acceptable within 67% rule?

So my model arrived today. I'm going to be painting Lilith, Avatar of Nature's Malevolence, one of my favorite figures that Wyrd produces.

I took a picture of it to post here (you'll have to excuse my crappy phone-camera):



I absolutely love the model, and know that there is no way I can really do it justice with my meager paint skills, but I really wanted to get in on this. Good luck to everyone involved, I'll check back in after I get some work done on Lilith.

Great job on the Dead Justice Rameses! I think you all are going to put me to shame, but it's all in good fun.

Try and get nice and big shots uploaded, checking out details on smaller ones is very awkward.

i used a fine detail brush for it it's much more accurate than a micropen

Hiya Helium, does your camera have a macro setting? It usually looks like a small flower symbol.

Yeah you have until tomorrow at Midnight to try and get a better Picture because the current one is just not showing off the detail I can sort of make out!

@Ifalna and Cutthroatcure: My main problem is lack of a proper camera. I took some shots with my phone and some with an iPod and these were the best I came up with. I understand the shots keep my entry from being judged because of the fuzziness but I wanted to post them anyway just to show my support and enthusiasm for the contest. Perhaps the next time we have one of these contests I'll borrow a good camera from a friend and get some proper pictures taken.

I'm looking forward to seeing who wins the contest though. There are some really killer entries and I'm sure the judges will have a hard time choosing a winner.

I'd still keep trying, see if you can get a decent picture up. Already put the effort in after all.

Yeah, I would keep trying, from what I can see the paint job looks great, awesome work on the base as well. Try backing the camera up away from the mini, most 'phone' type cameras don't focus well that close up. Also, they tend to blur if you don't keep them perfectly still....try resting the camera on a box, or a small stack of books when taking the photo, see if that helps.

Aye, you have clearly gone to effort for this and it will be a total shame to not be able to get a decent shot :(

Any digi-cam you can get a loan of from a friend will make a huge improvement, even a bargain basement €10 one.

If you can't, try taking a distance shot. Place the mini and move your phone backwards till it is in focus, don't go for the close up shot thinking it will be better, phone cams rarely have macro.

I doubt I'll be able to finish Seamus on time, at least not to the standard I'd like Will try and hammer through some painting tonight while the Walking Dead's on (appropriate...)

Use a 1-10 system 1 being crap and 10 being quite the opposite.

Then leave a pro and con for each category so people know what was liked and what could be improved

I guess just put a poll or something up. It'd be more like an honourable mention than anything. The judges for this already seem to be putting more effort to it than most of the other contests that seem to run around here where it seems to come down to just random people voting on it; with a complete lack of feedback as well.

Here is the moment you all have been waiting for, the end results of the The Come One, Come All Malifaux Painting Competition!!!!!

I first want to say thank you to all the people who submitted models and did their best to give us models to gawk at and judge for the masses! Congrats to you all regardless of who end up finishing first in this competition.

Second I want to thank all of my awesome judges for their spectacular help and going out of their way to really take the time to break down each model and put a score according to each category. I could not have done this without them!

Each category (Paintjob, Base, Overall ) had 30 possible points and the entry with the most points over all three will be our winner, our judges were also nice enough to submit some pros & cons to help anyone interested in an outside opinion.

1: Ophelia - Bymygravenimage

Paintjob - 22.5
(Pro) nice, vibrant colors. Good use of gradual blending up to the highlights drawing the eye to the breasts (kind of the point of the model). The muted colors of the clothing provide a nice counter-point to the screaming colors of the ork critter, once again... drawing the eye to the breasts and lips. Nice trick. / Lovely details on base, face and gun./ nice neutral colour scheme with just a hint of red to contrast against the green
(Con) The mini itself has had a lot more attention paid to it than the base, the difference in quality between skin and spear is quite noticeable.
Base -19.5
(Pro) custom made, lot of effort put into it
(con) the stuff on the base, while interesting... doesn't really carry the theme of the figure, it's just seems like random bits. / The model base is a little unclear of what it is, try to be more clear with what your trying to portray, maybe add some Wetness.
Overall - 21.5
(Pro) the mini is very small but the painter managed to keep it all rather well defined
(Con) parts look more rushed than others

2: Dead lady justice - Rameses

Paintjob -21
(pro) - looks nice and clean
(con) - photo is tiny and I can't actually see how it was painted. Could just be all drybrushed bar the skin and I can't tell :( Shame.
Base - 19
(Pro) Looks fine, but I'm not sure what rubble & rocks are doing on a hard-wood floor.
(Con) exact same as above, tiny picture is letting the painter down
Overall Model -22
(Pro) Lovely skinwork, nice looking base, really nice details
(Con) Photo needs more white balance,

3: Tealor - Method

Paintjob - 23.5
pro - smooth blending, really nice whites with good grey shades/Nice colour tones, skin looks very nice/ Tremendous job on the face and eyes.
con - only real con is the hair, which lacks definition
Base - 19
pro - clean and nicely shaded
con - lacking any real detail. Tiny bit of grass would have made a huge difference / Plain (which is fine) but I don't think the color choice compliments the figure very much.
Overall model - 24
(Pro) feel the base should not penalise it too much, it's a lovely paintjob. / Stunning figure
(Con) kind of a boring setting. Wish I could zoom in on this one.

4: Baby Kade - IKPainter

Paintjob - 25.5
pro - smooth and clean / Nice use of color & good shading / Amazing detailing and beautiful shading!
con - lacking any real constrasing/shading
Base - 26
pro - lot of effort put into the colour choice and contrasting / Lot of extra work went into this I think. The tiles, the extra fiddly bits... impressive.
con- bit messy, paint along the sides
Overall - 25.75
(Pro)Great effort,
(Con) negatively affected by the difference in contrast between the model and bases paint job, lot more shading on the base. / somehow the sum of the parts is less than the parts taken individually. Anti-synergy

5: Lilith - Hellum42

Paintjob - 18
(Con) very unclear picture with heavy shadow difficult to see any real detail which is a shame.
Base - 24.5
(Pro)Huge amount of effort put in, clear even with a fuzzy shot.
Overall- 20
(Pro) Gorgeous base
(Con)Real shame about the shot

6: Nurse - Zesto

Paintjob - 24.5
pro - excellent skin, multiple colour tones used. Really nice. Slight transparancy through white is an excellent touch / I really like certain aspects of this paint job (actually I like the whole thing)... but somehow it's a bit crude looking.
con - slightly messy, but that is mostly due to the painters style, and not really a con
Base- 22.5
(Pro)base is actually rather simple bar the blood splashed on top / blood spatters and pooling are a nice touch. Gives you a clear idea of this woman's intent.
Overall - 24
(Pro) Stunning face detail, dress has some dark shading but some beautiful color blending.
(Con) Might want to refine Technique

7: Party Crasher - Wildchevy

Paintjob - 23
(Pro) Very clean and neat, / Nice bold colours, great hair and face, amazing skull detail
(Con) but appears to not really have any shading or highlighting. Either that or it is so subtle that the shot is not picking it up due to size.
Base - 20
(Pro) Neat and has some nice additions to it
(Con) Red brick that reflected the red in her hair would have been a better choice I think.
Overall - 22
65.0/90.0

8: Nurse - Fango

Paintjob - 25.75
(Pro)Extremely clean and really nice blending / Very good work on the white coat the hair is very striking as are the face and skin tones. / very nice work
(Con) only let down is the white which has shading a tiny bit too subtle.
Base - 23.5
Very neat, and gorgeous colour choice to help contrast the rest of the mini. / color is a nice choice though for the fig
Overall - 24.7
73.95/90.0


9: Seamus - Forgotmytea

Paintjob -20.5
(Pro) Clean, Good freehanding. / Decent work but not much in the way of advanced techniques
(Con) but no shading or highlighting visable / perhaps some my shading and high lights
Base - 20.5
(Pro) Plain but does not distract.
Overall - 20.5
61.5/90.0

Little reaction to the judges (no critic, you guys did a very good job and I take the pro and cons serious to make my painting better)
Picture does not compliment the hair on Tealor, it is detailt just not on the picture
The base could be better I agree, but this miniature is part of an Outcasts group with bases matching our playgrounds so I kept it in the same style....

I'm really happy with this kind of contests because it keeps me motivated to painting !!!!!!
