We'll start off with some character creation for now, I'll update later in the day with a story and such other things.
RPers may take the place of a crew member on any existing crew or may form their own crew as a captain.
Name: [Name]
Crew: [RPers may take the place of a crew member on any existing crew or may form their own crew as a captain.]
Rank/Position: [Whatever you feel you're most qualified for]
Description/Bio: [A few sentences describing your character and their past in moderate detail]
If you start a new crew, use this format:
Crew name: [Name]
Flagship: [Name]
Ship Description: [A few sentences describing the crew's Flagship, its weapons and any special or unique traits.]
Home Port: [using an alternate earth, so the location may be real or fictional as long as it maintains a steampunk setting]
I'll have my own crew after I update, also if anyone wants to hold out on joining a crew, you can set your crew to Freelance.
p_gray99 wrote:What would be the normal size for one of the airships and how many crew would be expected?
100' would probably be ideal for this sort of thing, enough room for cargo, weapons, crew, etc. But it's not overly large to where 1 man can't operate it (although he'd be working quite hard.)
Crews consist only of player characters, at least for now, let's see if that works out. If not, crews will consist of a set number of NPCs whose numbers may dwindle down.
May be interested, though I'll wait to see the story first. The steampunk setting is a good enough start. I guess I'd make a character then join an existing crew rather than start my own.
p_gray99 wrote:I can't imagine getting 100 players. How about having each player having direct control over 1 man and then indirect control over NPCs as well?
I meant that the ships would be roughly 100 feet long.
Ah, ok, sorry. Also, I'd probably make my own character and ship, rather than joining another, but how many crew would that kind of ship expect to have? And what guns? I'm expecting compressed-air cannons kind of thing if it's steampunk.

I'll add a Ship Description, so captains can customize their ride. Hopefully things don't get out of control with that, if they do, it can always be countered by some writing ability.
p_gray99 wrote:Ok. Would a 20-man ship be too large? Or too small? Given that there aren't any at the moment, I've got nothing to base mine off.
I think that would work well, probably in the appropriate range of around 100 feet and large enough to carry necissary supplies and a small skiff, and of course cannons!
Crew: 20 airmen of lesser rank including a Lieutenant.
Rank/Position: Privateer of the Royal British air navy
Ship Description: He operates in a 20-man airship named The Blinding Light, with 6 large compressed-air cannons (3 on either side) capable of shooting holes in even the toughest-armoured airbag. However although his ship isn't particularly powerful or fast, it is nimble enough that it can quickly drop out of the arc of enemy guns, meaning that it is an elite dogfighter. The ship also contains a rapid expansion bomb, which can be dropped anywhere to tear down most fortifications with rapidly expanding gas.
Description/Bio: Voren is a powerful commander. Although born in the upper echilons of society, he then became a mere pirate, though he made his big breakthrough capturing the pirate Admiral Death, handing in the pirate in return for being made Privateer and Duke. He then went on to do his duty as a privateer, stealing only from other nations, and occasionally handing in another pirate who had been too careless at not getting caught.
Equipment: Toughened leather armour with steel vambraces, black leather boots, flintlock pistol and Navy-issue cutlass.
Description/Bio: Nathan Theobald was just 16 when the pressgangers for the Royal British Air Navy caught him. Forced into service onboard the Red Lynx, a large cruiser of the British Navy as a cabin boy his quick mind led to him gaining several advancements through the ranks, until he reached the rank of deckhand at the age of 20. It was in battle with a frigate of the Franco-Spanish Alliance that Nathan was first noticed as a possible helmsman. A lucky shot from the enemy frigate's air cannons had killed the helmsman of the Red Lynx. As the nearest member of the crew at the time Theobald grabbed the helm, stabiling the wallowing cruiser. Knowing that they would be in trouble if they stayed where they were Nathan began steering the ship. He seemed to have a natural touch for it, and pushed the cruiser through a series of daring manoeuvres , eventually leading to the Red Lynx crossing the enemies T and sinking the enemy vessel. When Duke Voren came looking for a new helmsman Theobald jumped at the chance, the smaller, nimbler craft more to his liking. The Blinding Light commanded by Voren and with Theobald at the helm has become a force to be reckoned with, pulling of manoeuvres that many crafts cannot even hope to replicate.
Mostly done, I'll fill in the blanks with the update.
Name:Capt. Robert Crowe
Crew: Flying Isles Privateers
Rank/Position: Captain
Description/Bio: [A few sentences describing your character and their past in moderate detail]
Crew name: Flying Isles Privateers
Flagship: Black Sparrow
Ship Description: [A few sentences describing the crew's Flagship, its weapons and any special or unique traits.]
Home Port: The Flying Isles
Name: Sophie D'Usiner Crew: Freelance Rank/Position: Inventor Description/Bio: Her fondest childhood memories were helping her father in his workshop, something he had done and his father before him; going back several generations. She had inherited her father's endless curiosity; a gift in the eyes of her family. Thus at the age of 23 she began to travel the world to see just what it all had to offer, and how she could make a few improvements to it. A somewhat naive but noble quest.
Name: Captain David
Crew: Black Sun Pirates (45 Npc crewmen)
Rank/Position: Captain
Description/Bio: Captain david is a short man who negotiates at the buisness end of a blunderbluss and leads with an iron fist, He is known around the globe for being able to liberate merchant ships of every scrap of cargo (including the crew's food) and then leaving them with a disabled propulsion system. He has short black hair and a scarred white face, He also wears a suit of plate armor (including a lighter helmet)
Crew name: Black sun Pirates
Flagship: The Fallen Murderer
Ship Description: The Fallen Murderer is a decently sized warship of the oceans it has cannons on its main deck and a 2nd deck just below with cannons (20 total) (4 top 6 2nd deck for left and right) The ship is a decently large ship and has iron armor plates, because of all of this iron the ship takes much more lifting power to get in the air (4 large ballons (armored where exposed)), it has a small skiff that detaches from the bottom for raids, landing parties, and shore leave. The ship also has several long shot cannons (6 total) that are fired from blasting ports out of the front. the ship is propelled by a state of the art steam based propulsion system, (think a big set of fans) but again its weight makes for slow acceleration and even slower breaking
Home Port: Tortuga, a large haven for pirates built into the side of a mountain
I'll probably end up in whatever ship is the closest to non-pirate or independent to start with due to my character's background. More or less the more friendlier seeming crews.
My ship's sort of working for Britain. And some of the time we take out pirates. And we never steal from Britain or it's colonies. And we could do with an inventor, if she's going to be inventing weaponry.
Name: Sebastian Lukas Crew: Children of Steel Rank/Position: Admiral Description/Bio: Born out of the nobility of Britannia, Sebastian was pampered as a child. He would have remained, were it not for him uncovering a horrific plot on the part of the queen to kill him and the entire Lukas family. Now fights the laws of order in vengeance of his kiss,
Crew name: Children of Steel Flagship: Prometheus Ship Description: Worthless heap of crap. That is all. Rickety, weak and generally unstable. Crew are few in number, yet dedicated. Home Port: Elerius
Probably end up on that one then. I'm not sure if they'll be inventing any weapons, at least to start out. Probably more like useful gadgets. Though if needed could accidentally make one.
How many of them are there? And how many (probably terrible) guns do you have? I need to know this so that you can be dragged in chains in front of the monarch/prime minister!
So, are your crew even capable of basic pirating? I'm wondering if I can drag you in front of my ruler and actually get you given the "guilty" by a judge.
Alright might as well go ahead and make a character then. Just to warn the rest of you, Im not a pro at rping (not a noob either thought)
Name: Dale Turner
Crew: Freelance
Rank/Position: Communications Technician
Description/Bio: Dale grew up on a small farm far from the bustling cities of his countries. As soon as he had the chance he enlisted in the army and learned how to take apart and upkeep radios and has a basic knowledge of machinery and an extensive knowledge of firearms. During his first tour there was an incident and he was discharged. Now, eager to continue a life of danger, Dale is signing up for the first Pirate crew he comes across.
Name: Gregor Borya
Crew: The Barbary Corsairs
Rank/Position: Captain
Description/Bio: "Beyond a doubt, the greatest scoundrel to ever sail the skies of Europa" - Emperor Hizer Barbarossa
The better known of the Borya brothers, he fought for Emperor Barbarossa in the "Clockwork War", shortly after the war, he became a corsair, raiding the merchant lanes of Europa, from
his sky port in the Swiss Alps.
Crew name: The Barbary Corsairs
Flagship: Crimson King
Ship Description: 29 gun Diablo class frigate. 12 18 pounder cannons on both port and starboard side, 4 12 pounder cannons on the rear and a customised revolving 24 pound cannon, capabale of firing a sustained salvo, located on its prow.
my crew are somewhere between Pirates of the Caribbean and those described in Abney Park's song Airship Pirate. They're more than competent, however usually intoxicatd. Our main prey be the vulnerable cargo ships of the East India Company, though as privateers, we also hunt our competitors.
I'm generally against posting orders as they restrict things, although only if people will be responsible and not post masses of stuff all in one go. Anyway, some semblance of an order generally forms by itself which suits people better.
I've just assumed the ship was large enough to accommodate my character her own room, due to privacy. Not to mention her father's company has probably invested a bit into the navy.
I probably am because I'm a privateer in service to them. It's your decision though: I'm not sure 2 major ships should be in combat this early in the story, although it might be fun.
yes an encounter, I blast you you dodge me and LOL while I lumber around to try and line up a harpoon (you then get away or summink after attaching some kind of tracking device to my ship
It's fine for someone new to join an RP, however no-one's posted on this one for ages, and I reckon it's dead. If you want a 40k-based RPG, come down to The Box. It's a forum run by me and a few others from dakka for RPGs, and we'd be more than happy to teach you how to roleplay well.
No. The bandwagon effect killed it. Too many people were joining the jaws of death and then went to the box, and this kind of got ignored by too many people. That's what killed it.
Well read the main thread and immediatly gained interest. So if its not too late i`ll submit a CS.
Name: Alleyiana S. Kipling
Rank: Captain/ Prototype Airship Designer
Ship name: Die schwarze Perle (The Black Jewel)
Crew: 75
Ship Description: A large ship of the line, Die schwarze Perle is a sight to see. Flying by revolutionary airship technology, that reduces the ships need for balloons to zero, it uses a prototype spinning propeller pointed down. This is one of the first developed and requires alot to run along with very slow speeds. But its trade off is the use of no balloons, except a emergency one, and a bigger capacity for cargo and weapons. It is equip with 24 cannons, 8 on top deck, 12 on main deck, and 4 on bottom deck. It travels at speeds of 20knots (assuming that this is a relatively slow speed), and can carry enough food and ammunition to stay in the air for a month. But it doesnt serve as a attack ship, but as a trader. Its large size allows it to carry many large orders across the countries, and its large supplies allows it to get them their without stop.
Character Desc: A rather odd person, Alleyiana (Pronounced how its spelled), was born into a royal german family. She was raised like a woman, but took to the airship mechanics at an older age. By the time she graduated from tech school, she was already signed up to serve in the German Airforce. She was granted a higher role due to her families ties and her love of airships, in the role of a prototype developer of airship technology. She worked for several years on that until she, and several colleges, developed a airship that required no balloon. She then designed a ship and had the navy produce it. It came out to be the Die schwarze Perle. After its production the German Airforce put her in charge of it. She has since broken off the German Airforce and now runs to the highest bidder.
If anything seems op, just tell me and I will edit and make better.

It seems like the thread died, but if there's enough interest in it I suppose it could be revived...
If anyone else is interested, I'll PM everyone who was origionally going to be part of it, see if we can bring it back to life.

I`m fully up for reviving it. If the GM`s on board, i`m sure i can get a few friends in here to get it rolling again. If the GM isnt on board, which I highly doubt, then we`ll either end it or choose a new GM. That sound fair?
zman111 wrote:however fun this may be to revive I wouldnt at the moment, there is far to much going on in this forum for our RPers to support it openly
