...that is not a small number. That is a big number!
I really can't encapsulate just how beautiful this is. Amazing airbrush work on the tanks - making those big blank slabs of metal not look flat is a huge challenge - though I would have almost liked to see more general weathering to give those gradients some context (I really understand preferring the more pristine look, though). Your OSL work is just absurdly well done, though it strikes me as a bit... bright. I'm not sure I dislike it; it may or may not be growing on me, but it certainly creates a stunning effect!
You should be ridiculously proud of the work you've done here. Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

Very good work once again, absolutely love it! The split scheme must have been a lot of work! How did you acheive the straight split? On my angels sanguine I've been using a micron pen to draw the centre line, obviously that wouldn't work for you so I'm very curious how you did it!

Nothing but stunning work! Though I can't help but imagining the cost this would have.
I see forgeworld minis, scibor minis, SoB, extra psycannons, extra autocannons from foreworld (if I'm not mistaken), guns and weapons from non-GK GW minis and on top of that the assuredly astronomical cost of getting a painting commission of that caliber.
But the most wonderous thing is: how in the seven hells do you manage to paint these (and I believe you also assemble them, if I remember correctly?) in just a MONTH!?!
Are you a wizard? Do you have tiny little slave leprechauns working for you?
Exalted, for sure.

That's way too many grey knights to have in one place. Personally, the client's choice of colours is a little unfavourable, even if they are painted nicely.

I work on everything in huge chunks, so no real idea. But it was June 29th when I finished the last army so about a month from start to finish. I dont like to work on an army until the one before is finished.

Im half asleep. I assume by margins what it costs me to paint? I am not sure what you mean precisely. If you mean how much it costs to paint by "margins" then the expenses are not high other than time. Theres about 4 bottles of wash and maybe 6 bottles of paint total if you poured all I used into full bottles.

Brandon,
You amaze me again. First with the 15K of BA you painted for me (with another 5,000+ to go for same). And now this beauty. I can't wait to get them in my hot little hands! I am so glad that we had the discussion before about the split colours, and that is the way we decided to go. I will also have to agree that your best work is when you are allowed to have the most freedom. Advice to those out there that are thinking of contracting with Brandon for a commission: A) do it, B) let him have as much artistic freedom as possible - you will not be disappointed.
I can't thank you enough for the attention to detail you have put into this army, and I look forward to many more commissions in the future.
Dunwich wrote:Holy moly! I have never seen so many well painted models in a single place.

What models are the Death Cult Assassins made from?
The DCA are mostly sourced from Cool Mini or Not. There are a few from GW though. I probably have five rejected models for every one that you see here as I am pretty choosy about what will work for me.
Dabedman wrote:Nothing but stunning work! Though I can't help but imagining the cost this would have.

...
You are not mistaken, all of the autocannons are from FW, and there are a set for each dread, which are also FW models. The turrets for the razor backs are from FW for the heavy bolters and from ]Puppetswar for the assault cannons ( http://www.puppetswar.com/category.php?id_category=30). There are certainly models from Scibor, FW, GW, Hitechminiatures, Raging Heroes, and many more. Cost for models and accessories/bases = not a clue as I didn't bother adding it up.
The SR is highly modified with parts from Chapterhouse Studios as is one of the LR.

Not a clue as to the cost for the painting as of yet, but it will be worth it whatever the price happens to be. Same for the modeling that Brandon did for me as I doubt even half of the models were built when I shipped them. All of the dreads and razorbacks were built. About half of the power armour and terminator armour. Maybe half of the DCA and warrior acolytes. I also sent one built LR. Not only can this man paint like a daemon - he can build like a master engineer.

The guardsmen are actually FW models from the Cadian Hostile Environment line: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Cadian_Shock_Troops/CADIAN-HOSTILE-ENVIRONMENT-TROOPS-MELTA-SQUAD.html

Cost for models = unknown, but a lot. I could likely ask my wife as she tracks things like that, but I don't bother.
Cost for painting/building = unknown at this time, but I can tell you from the 15,000p BA army that it is worth every penny - this man is a master!

Horst wrote:If I suddenly win the lottery, I know who I'm getting to speed paint me a 10k all-infantry guard army.
Do it - you will not be disappointed. I will be sending him my preheresy Star Phantoms (yes I know they were founded after, but I wanted them to use the mark ii, ii, and iv armour), which will be using the SW codex at about 6K points. He already has my CSM army at about 5K. I will also be sending him about 10K in DKOK. As you can tell I trust him with a lot of models, and don't even bat an eye at him having several thousand dollars of my models at any given time. He currently also has two FW warhounds and a FW reaver that he will painting for my BA army as well. Send him an army and see his quality for yourself.
If you are wondering about the purple colour it is rather simple. I like the colour a lot. It is very rich looking and I thought it was fitting for an army that was founded directly by the Emperor. I also had this ongoing joke with my club mates about the GK being homosexual - so I thought the purple would be even more fitting for this inside joke.

I've masked pretty extensively for my projects on vehicles, you just need low- tac masking tape, tamiya makes excellent stuff for this. It comes in multiple widths, just make sure you let the previous color dry/cure fully before masking over it, or you can still mess it up. Link purely for an example.

I mean profit margins. You don't have to disclose client information, but I'm just curious. The cost of all those minis (much less the paint, etc.) must be enormous, and if it took you a month to do it, you'd have to be making a pretty tidy sum in order to pay the rent / eat / placate the woman.

I don't pay for any models out of the painting cost. Customers either send me the models they have purchased or they send me the funds to buy them on their behalf.
The only expense is the few bottles of paint (probably less than $20 worth here) and the occasional replacement brush that I can think of off hand. The only real expense is the time, but that is not to be overlooked.

The one with the storm bolter on the left arm is a GK left arm from about the elbow down, then a GK SB and hand. The one with the SB on the right side is either a GK arm or terminator arm (can't remember at this time) from just below the shoulder down. The SB is from the commander set. Both of the required some GS at the connection point, but that was only to even out the connection.

Hahaha. And I would like to know what that that Welsh minx Catherine Zeta-Jones is like in the sack, but that just ain't gonna happen. But so it goes ;-)
As I said already - I don't know what the total cost is - I don't even have a clue. I know what the painting cost me, but that is between Brandon and I. As a note, I didn't even ask for a quote for this army.
Brandon had already painted this army for me ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/431491.page), and I knew without a doubt that I wanted him to paint my GKs as well. I knew he would take care of the army, and charge me a fair price for his time, and that is exactly what he did. Besides, as the quote goes: If you have to ask the price...
If one has to ask what "Market Price" means on the menu when ordering that Kobe beef dish, then one had best look at another section of the menu. All of Brandon's prices are on his website btw, and here is a link for your convenience ( http://www.gmmstudios.com/pricing.php). But I can guarantee you that if you contract with Brandon for a commission, you will get more attention and love for your models than you will end up paying for.
Now, enough said on the price of things please, and let's get back to the appreciation of a beautiful job. I think I will name this "The Army" formally know as Prince!
The SR shall now be known as "When Doves Cry" - any other suggestions?

Thanks for the kind words Lee as always. A funny coincidence, a few minutes ago Pandora in it's infinite wisdom decided to play When Doves Cry...
I will admit I didn't skip.
Yes one could figure out the total if they really wanted to, but to be honest I usually go out of my way to go beyond in the painting stage, and then discount here and there in the final price. On armies like this I tend to cut deals of an order of 10-15% when the final math is done. Usually it's because I am grateful to work on such a big army, they really shine in the gallery. Also Lee and other customers put a lot of trust in me and I am always grateful for that. I hear horror stories on at least a weekly basis from new or interested customers about other painters and it's an honor that people put their trust in me.

But yes, enough about that.
What really struck me at first glance is how brilliant every little model is. There are just no concessions made just because it's rank and file. Every model shows amazing work.

The paintjobs are so clean and considering how many models there are here, it just amazing that the focus stayed consistent throughout the project. I really like all of the special characters, all of them have a unique look to them.
I can even begin to imagine how much this army cost your client....or how exactly you ship all of this to him/her. It blows my mind that somebody out there has this type of disposable income....or they took out a 2nd-3rd mortgage on their home....or maybe drained their 401k savings . The display case is actually not the best at the moment. It seriously needs an overhaul. There are 20k of orks on it, about 2k of SOB, 4k of smurfs, plus a bunch of necrons. Once it is cleaned up and better organized, then I will. They are on individual shelves, but it just looks like a bunch of models standing at attention. I am thinking of changing the cabinet to something much bigger that I can place some dioramas in with areas to place the extra models, then it will look much more impressive.

I do have the space, and am thinking of using motorized shelving suspended from the ceiling in my garage so I can display armies battling each other, and raise it out of the way for gaming sessions. The garage has in-floor heating, and is where my son and I build/paint/game. Time will tell.

I really like seeing the Malifaux models being used here. If someone from GW saw those pics, their panties must be all bunched up their crack.
Great work.

Most of the DCA are from coolminiornot and there are a big chunk from the Dark Age Games line. I went through a lot of models before I decided on these ones.

I being the client, was charged a reasonable amount of money for this extremely high quality work. Brandon has always been more than fair, and even threw in some free painting given the size of the army.

Great work.
That's right - there are some Malifaux as well as the Dark Age, but I raped every line of miniatures with females in them that I could find. I have a poop tonne of left overs that didn't make the grade though. I am very choosy.

Ye gods, that's the whole fething chapter. Doc, are you a billionaire? seriously though, it took me almost a year to paint 500 points not even half as well as these knights. Bravo sir, bravo!

The painting's very nice and smooth, as usual. I'm a big fan of the purple (it's my favorite color), but I think the blue power weapons clash a bit. I would have done them in a red or green. The blue just doesn't look right to me.

Based on the style and inclusion of many others, i'd be inclined to say that it is a Scibor miniature.

I can't actually comprehend how cool all of these are. Sadly, I'm not a fan of the purple silver split, but the painting is impeccable regardless.
Also, I noticed a nice Scibor mini or two in there. I have them too. Very well done!

Holy GAK!
That's one large army, to think it's been a commission paint job makes my mind explode. The models alone must have cost a bomb, plus the painting and I hate to think.
Fantastic work. I may not be a fan of the purple and the half tone tanks but the execution of this is outstanding.
I also love all the works that's gone into the base. Makes all the difference.

I too cannot understand the sheer speed this was painted at.
Brandon, I don't suppose you could give any tips or links to ways to speed things along? My own painting has reached a reasonable standard of detail but it still takes me hours and hours just to paint a single guy to completion.

The source lighting on the guy holding the duel power swords in a X pattern in front of his face is absolutely stunning! Really just the entire thing is amazing!
