I tried, I really tried to see a game of 40K at a store. It was Black Knight Games in Hamilton, Ontario. You gamers there on Aug 1s, should be ashamed of yourselves. Come on, shower and use deoderant or anit perspent. Shower before showing up and USE SOAP.

I know I will not be coming to the store to play any games, it was hurendous. Like come on, I thought this was a joke, an internet joke, but the entire back store was B.O!

So how come 40K gamers don't shower? Like wow, I just lost lots of games now because I can't bear it.

So please people shower, with soap and use deoderant/anit perspant before you game. That was shamefull.

So what do you guys and gals do when someone really stinks when about to play a 40K game? What is the polite way of handling a situation where you can't be in the same room because the smell is so bad?

I've experienced a similar problem is some GW/FLGS, but generally, I've found a lot of wargamers to be pretty socially normal human beings. Then again, this may stem from me only dealing with normal, hygienic people, but I admit there are still a visible portion of wargamers who hold steadfastly onto their old, pre-pubescent hygiene routine.

Just start bringing cheap sticks of deodorant to tournies/events. Refuse to play your opponent until he puts some on. Even give it to him for free, the whole stick. You might have to give a demo, so be prepared.

This drove me out of the local gw.
Its small, so it takes one armpit guy to drive me out of the store.

I'm a 40k guy, and I shower EVERY day-sometimes two or three times, depending on what I'm doing that day!! I can't stand the stink. However, in my area it's the Magic kids who smell the worst. I had a friend walk in on a Magic tourney when I worked at the store and he practically fell over from the stink. Yes, it was that bad. He made a comment, and one of the guys bitched to the boss. The guy who bitched does actually shower, but his friends don't. Actually, while the store I go to DOES get humid from body heat, the Warhammer players really don't generate a bad smell. Scent of people, like at an indoor stadium concert, yes. Smell of unwashed hippies? No.

Alot of the people who play in flgs are normal everyday people.
the unwashed gamer image is an exageration.... but in europe anyway flgs are always rather small, so it only takes one "questionable hygiene" guy to make the air unbreathable.

And when you step in and the stink hits, you're not gonna sniff everyones armpits to figure who showers or not,...

But again, we are normal people ! .

Tournaments at my FLGS are held in the back room.

Everyone there is clean and fresh when they arrive (barring occasional stinky outsiders) but 8-9 hours in a windowless, enclosed space WILL generate a certain aura, especially on a hot day, or when a lot of people attend.

I have smelled the Great Unwashed phenomenon elsewhere though, and a little mild overheating is NOTHING on that :(

Agreed. There is a great difference in smell between a couple of people sweating on a hot day ( which is only human lads ), and the smell of a Great Unwashed One, who carries with him the smell of many days and layers of perspiration.

The first can be cure by opening a window, stepping out for fresh air or a quick spray of deodrent. The Great Unwashed One would need a good shower and a pound of soap.

I take a good shower everyday, brush my teeth, the usual clean hygiene stuff. So I expect others to do the same, you know cause were all human beings. But if there is that smell game around call em out. They'll be out of there in no time.

The size of the store and the amount of ventilation matters a lot.

Luckily my flgs has this, and no one really seems to stink.

I honestly think it's ridiculous not to have a decent ventilation system in all GW stores.
The one in frankfurt is pretty big, but it's like an oven right now, its actually cooler outside the bloody store !

My new store in Strasbourg is tiny and also lacks a ventilation system.

As a follower of Nurgle I turned my bathtub into a sess pool. I swim in it daily and double on days I play warhammer 40k. I use dead skunks as my deodorant. I am the Great Unclean One and you will fear me.

Well my FLGS is actually meant to be an apartment/house so ventilation is rather good, albeit space is rather limited. I have to say I would rather play 40k with a GUO than play airsoft with a GUO in my squad (hell a days hard work i can tolerate and completely understand for smell, if its several days BEFORE the event since you last took a shower, needless to say I find myself doing suicide actions just to get away from them) .

I'm rather lazy, but I also refuse to go play wargames without clean clothes / freshly showered.

This basically forces me to chose between doing laundry or painting at home instead of going out to play.

Often, I choose to stay home and paint :(

This is not an exageration in my area. There are some stank people that show up at the store. I carry AXE BODY SPRAY in my army bag and will spray myself, but accidently have the can facing the wrong way to get the smell on the culprit. Also after a long day of gaming at a tournament I will even hit myself up with it just in case...don't wanna be that guy..

I agree, luckly my FLGS is the size of two or maybe three gaming stores, (its the largest one in Arkansas supposedly.) So since there is plenty of room to spread out it doesnt smell that bad. Except for the bathroom on saturdays. Its like some people can't aim to save their lives. And thats with an employee cleaning it 2-3 times a day.

At my FLGS, It's normally the Back Room you avoid at all costs.

The people up front(unless there's a Big Magic/yu-gi-oh/"other game where you play with your new toy right after you buy it instead of running home and studying the new rulebook like your in college again and tomorrow's the big test" release. Then the wargamers are out on the streets) generally smell like they didn't nap during that part in health in 5th grade when the teacher told everyone about deodorant.

O yes, and it is worth noting that yesterday I really did have to bring it up to the manager because they were having a Yu-Gi-Oh tourney and it really friggin smelled like someone in there was worshiping Nurgle. I wasn't going to say anything about it until I actually overheard some kids in that tourney complain about it.

I have no sense of smell so I'm not driven away by it let alone notice it.

I am, however, self conscious about my own hygiene and always wonder if I smell bad. The first things I do when I get up are take my meds, brush my teeth, shower, and change into a clean set of clothing.

I'm too nervous about my possible stench to not try to bathe and use deodorant.

Its like that here, i only see one unclean one who always wears a shirt one size to small that is white at 40k night.
But it gets worse on friday night magic where you can fit alot more in a confined space.

As a personal note, I've been to Black Night games in Hamilton before, not for 40k but for Magic the Gathering, and I found that it probably had the most unpleasant player base in the area. I know that the players in the area also tend to be somewhat aggressive and don't have the best conduct (people caught cheating multiple times have not been banned). If you have a car I know that Conspiracy Comics in Burlington has generally respectable individuals, or at least it did whenever I went there, although I think they have fewer weekly games with a greater focus on tournaments. Alternatively, there is Bayshore Hobbies on King West (its near McMaster where Westdale starts to merge into downtown). I haven't played there but the staff were quite friendly and when I was looking at models they mentioned that they had regular games there, so it might be worth your time to check it out.

And also for the record, I've generally found that the most respectable people at any games store for any hobby tend to be the late-teens/early twenties university students who aren't completely committed to gaming (ie, the ones who tend to have a life outside of the game, so to speak), followed closely by the older, educated hobbyists who generally show up the shirt and tie they were wearing that day. They also tend to be a touch more competitive (not necessarily extremely competitive, WAAC guys, but they generally enjoy the most when both they and their opponents are playing at their best, and if something is giving them repeated trouble, instead of whining about it being OP or trying to get it banned, they adapt to counter it). What type of game they actually play is irrelevant, and I've noticed a roughly equal distribution of well-kept individuals in both tabletop games and CCGs.

Also, as a note to people badmouthing card game players as being poorly kept, to to a MtG PTQ or other competitive event, then look at the players who make it into the top 16. I'm willing to bet that at least 12 of them are well dressed, and that at least 7 of the top 8 will look respectable. I can't speak for other games, and I definitely can't speak for lower levels of competition (while my local FNM is fairly competitive, people treat it as PTQ practice, but FNM's I've gone to at other stores have covered the entire spectrum of player attitudes and types), but my personal experience is that card players, particularly the ones that are actually good, and not just a shark in the kiddie pool, act and keep themselves in a presentable manner.

Between 2001 and 2006, I was one of those guys whose odor would make you sick.

I would shower about once every 3-4 months at that time. To be honest, the shower scared me. I kept thinking that pink goop would start coming out of the showerhead or faucet, and would try to kill me.

To be perfectly fair, that was also the time when the schizophrenia had started, worsened, and then after the diagnosis in mid-to-late 2004, the meds took a while to kick in at full effect, and then my meds were switched because the Zyprexa wasn't working well enough. Apparently one of the symptoms of schizophrenia is a decline in personal hygiene.

I frequently go to Black Knight, Bayshore Hobbies, and Conspiracy(the location in Hamilton, and the one in Burlington), and I find that neither really have a case of BO. The GW in Mapleview mall used to, but the staff were usually quick to take the culprit aside and mention it to them quietly so not to humiliate said customer. Also, Bayshore Hobbies does not do any gaming in the store. the store is to small, and there is no space for tables. Although the owner does organize a game night once a month at a bar downtown Hamilton where people can bring in board games and play.

I have found the most unpleasent store can be Hobby Kingdom, but it can also be the best store depending on who is in.

At our local GW we tend to handle things the same way, (one friend is quite adamant about pointing out people who seem to have an anathema to water). A little stink, especially in summer on a hot and humid day... okay we can live with that. But, as my friend puts it, if you smell like unwashed butt, then we're going to let you know.

Thankfully, the manager of said GW also has no tolerance for "gamer funk." I honestly cannot fathom leaving the house without a shower, so this behavior literally is completely bewildering to me. Do these people not realize how they smell, or do they think this is socially acceptable?

I've got a partially blocked sinus cavity that leaves me with a very greatly reduced sense of smell. It's something that can be corrected with outpatient surgery, but I have this morbid fear of being cut on. So I've never had it fixed. You have to be pretty bad for me to notice you. But sadly, on occasion I do run into folks who have "issues" bad enough for me to do just that.
Not being able to smell most things was an advantage during the 20 years I worked in prisons as you might imagine.....as well as at the big gaming conventions I've attended.

The gaming community as a whole is partially to blame for this phenomenon in that we accept it. The GUO ones need to be confronted by their peers. It's amazing how much a little public shaming will modfy someone's behavior...that or they get so embarrased that they never return, which works too!

Hygene and neckbeards wearing wizard hats keep me out of the local well-equipped gaming store. That and their complete lack of customer service skills. The store I do frequent is quite clean and professional, but only has two tables. My gf wont even go in the other one anymore.

I shower before work and after when I go out. If I go in after work just to pick something up then Im in a tie, because I work at a high end dealership and I dress up. If I go in later or a day off I am always clean and dressed nicely. Now Im not saying you have to dress up to play with plastic men, but showering two days ago, not shaving for three months with no effort to trim, and wearing a wolf t-shirt and sweatpants is crossing the line. More and more this becomes an at-home hobby rather than a go out and compete hobby for me.

I am generally tolerant of body Oder to a degree mainly because you never know if said individual has an actuall medical problem. I also have a friend who sweats easily and he is aware of it but their are limits to what he can do to contain it. I have no desire to out somebody who can't help it and make them feel like an outcast.

However if I can smell your crotch 3 feet across the table then we have a problem. Also please be aware of your breath, I like chilli dogs and onions and garlic too but I don't want to be smelling what you ate all game. The only weapons I want wielded at me or my army are the imagenary kind.

My last game my op kept burping and decreatly blowinging it across the table at me. To make matters worse the guy actually cut the loudest fart I've ever herd mid game. Straight faced and didn't even register that it had happened. REALLY, we're in public dude you really going to just ripe one out loud in front of a stranger!

Wish I could disagree, but there it is. It doesn't help that there are more card gamers, and they tend to come from a wider variety of social interactivity. Of course, the stotr I work at has poor ventilation, and last FNM was on a hot, muggy day. The whole store was pretty pungent.

I've only been to a few stores and they tend to be quiet warm, so naturally most people will sweat a bit and that's ok, it's only natural, but it's that smell of sweat thast came out four days ago and is still sitting there that is disgusting.

I know of a LFGS that has three or four girls that work there...which I guess does wonders for the older boys who try to play it cool and stay clean. Some of them act up thinking it will get them the girl I guess. But the same store used ot have LARPS stop by, for Vampire and that brought in a lot of girls too.
It was the real ld creepy guys that sort of started scarying the girls off, more than the smell and people dressing in wolf shirts and stained sweat pants and burping and farting.

I probably used too much deodorant back in the day, just so I could turn it into a grav-attack tank. If GW brought back the vehicle construction rules, they would clean up the hobby!

I like to keep clean as well. If I have been working out, running around or just all-round sweating before I plan to go to my FLGS, I'll always make sure to shower. However, every so often there is that one player who doesn't have the courtesy to shower that comes along. I know. Because they're usually bad enough to make me start to gag. I should really call them out on it becuase it takes me everything I have to tolerate it.

I was at Salute! this year in London, at the ExCel centre, which is a pretty big gathering of tabletop gamers - most people understood the point of showers, soap etc, except at one point. I went over to a stall to check what they had and it was thronged with people (they had reduced/cheap stuff in some of the boxes). When I got to the stall the rank, multiplied stench of dirt, sweat & general lack of personal hygiene hit me rather hard - stomach churning stuff. Nasty.

Story one of my bosses likes to tell is of when he was at Warhammer World, in the store, and three children were in front of him (think he said they were in their teens) and one of them had an enormous piece of snot dangling from his nose. Apparently he pulled it out of his nose and, with it connected to a long stream of gooey snot, he put it in his mouth and chewed on it whilst the other two kids kept talking. Bad parenting I suppose.

It does seem to be just a small handful who lack basic knowledge of hygiene or are just so lazy & so bad at looking after their basic bodily needs that the rest of us suffer from the stench & the bad name these people give to the rest of us wargamers.

Rambling post-Long Day At Work post over.

Sometimes it is not people that smell, but their clothes. When clothes are not dried and aired properly they can really smell - when someone lives with that they tend not to be able to tell that their freshly washed clothes don't smell of washing powder, but of damp horribleness.

Have to say that the GM's of two of the gaming groups I have been in had houses/clothes that just stank of damp.

You can be clean in every way but still stink - it is not always because of bad hygiene.

I've been thinking about jury rigging some kind of personal anti stench device but I doubt it will work. They have those personal mosquito repeler things with fans on them. Thought about taken the bug repellent piece off and attaching a glad plug in refill to the fan and clip it to my bag or pants pocket. The only thing wrong with the idea that I can think of is finding a smell that everyone would like. Which is extremely hard. Plus you'd have to think about wether it would nutrilize the Oder or mix with it. Other wise you would just be adding to the stench.

I played a guy with some overwhelming BO at a recent, small tournament. Every time he came around, I'd catch a whiff and was horrified to see him sit down across from me. Ugh.

It was so bad that it was in my clothes. I kept having to check myself to make sure my deodorant had not somehow failed.

I have a Woot! shirt that addresses this issue that I'm going to start wearing to tourneys.

Well, I played competitive ice hockey for years and years, so I can put up with most anything in terms of foul odours! For example, one of the goalies who I unfortunately had to endure for 3 seasons, never even so much as aired-out her equipment in over three years! (let alone wash it...) Seriously, she didn't save shots due to any kind of skill, but rather the thick foulness in the air around her would slow the puck down if it cam near her... She was so bad it got to the point we'd put her in her own change room!

As for gamer-funk. When I worked at the local GW store, we had a rule. If I found your smell to be even slightly offensive, you had to leave and not come back until you'd learned what water+soap+deoderant was.

Davor: If you don't mind coming into Burlington, I'm not far from The Hobby Kingdom if you're ever looking for a game!

Lol. The first thing I thought when I read the OP's message was "just carry a bottle of Febreeze around and spray the smelly people".

In any case, as was mentioned, it's mostly an issue of ventilation. Packing a bunch of people in a small room and then getting their adrenaline going is going to make for some stink. The only way to fix this is to have a proper place to play in.

Of course...

RegalPhantom wrote:As a personal note, I've been to Black Night games in Hamilton before, not for 40k but for Magic the Gathering, and I found that it probably had the most unpleasant player base in the area. I know that the players in the area also tend to be somewhat aggressive and don't have the best conduct (people caught cheating multiple times have not been banned).

... there is a tiny exception of people who don't practice hygiene in the first place. It's likely that one type of sociopathy is in a larger pool with others. It makes perfect sense that the same person who isn't aware of rules regarding social behavior (like proper washing), are also the same people who consider other rules as optional (and so cheat in the games themselves).

In any case, this is a moment for pity, not scorn. If a person is really that broken that they behave in such a fashion, it's likely because there's something actually wrong with them. I may be able to achieve a semblance of normalcy despite my own thankless autism problems swimming around in my genes, but that's only because I've had a lot of time to work hard to act normal, and I very likely didn't have as bad of a starting position as others certainly have.

So take pity on the lonely, stinky people who have to cheat to win at a game. It might be the closest thing they have to personal contact or general success in their entire week...

I disagree with this. If people bathe and deodorize, or at the very least deodorize well enough, you're going to get some "boy" smell, as my wife describes it, but you won't get the stink. At the last tournament, my friends and I were definitely not the dryest of individuals, but we didn't stink. This guy, and the people referred to by the OP's title, stink.

Sweat doesn't necessarily = odor. It can definitely add to it, but it's not going to be overwhelming on its own.

But adrenaline causes you to stink, regardless of how you deodorize. Bathing and deodorant stops regular odors, not pheromone excretions.

The absolute worst experience I've ever had with 'smellyhammer' commically enough wasn't caused by other gamers themselves...

The 2001 Toronto GT was taking place in the same venue as a hockey camp for roughly 80'ish boys between the ages of 8-12.
All their equipment was being stored in the dorms we were also using. None of it aired out, just open bags of wet, smelly hockey gear that was being worn by boys who were mostly just hitting puberty.
And none of the kids smelled like they'd showered in days, despite all their on & off-ice activities.

And we had to walk through their hallway to get to our section of the dorms!
Even those of us who played high-level competitive hockey were dizzy from the odour. The poor sods who'd never smelled hockey-stink before nearly chocked to death!

You think gamer-funk can be awful, that year even the smelly nerds were tame by comparison!

When I used to do the tournament scene I carry my 8 Ball Cane and a can of Lysol. The Lysol was used when my opponent across from me had the funk. Could care less if I pissed off the TO, Judges, or my opponent. You are going to offend? I am going to offend and kill the Nurgle with my can of disinfectant. There is no effing reason why people should not shower. None!

The 8 Ball cane is another story. Anyhow with cane and can in hand I beat back the funk where ever it was for many, many, years.

Hello Space Marines.
Look at your tank, now look at mine, now back to yours, now back to mine.
Sadly, yours is not a Baneblade.
but if you stopped using xeno scented body washes and switch to Emperor Spice, you could drive a tank like this *chorus*
Look Down, Back up, Where are you?
Your on a Battleship with a Soldier your Space Marine could smell like.
Whats in your hand, back to me. I have it, The Bolter with two tickets to the killing heretics you love.
Look again. The Bolter is a now a Battle Cannon.
Anthing is possible when your soldier smells like a Emperor Spice man and not like a Xeno.

Im on a Chimera.

I can't say that I have ever noticed a bad smell in there. I avoid going on the weekends though, I imagine that it is much worse then. Of course, I remember back when it didn't have any sort of air conditioning. That was bad.

People nee to read their Primer some more. Chapter 3, section 18, subsection (ii), clause c clearly states:

Bath as often as possible: at least once a week. Pay particular attention to the armpits, genitals and feet. If bathing facilities are unavailable scrub your body with a damp cloth.

However, I must say that I absolutely hate it when people use a product like Lynx (I believe it is called Axe in the US). That stuff smells vile and makes me wretch. On its own it is bad enough, when people use it as a washing substitute it is much worse.

It's not only that Axe smells bad, it's that the people that use it generally use 5x more than they need.

Also, there are people that use Axe and similar products INSTEAD of showering instead of AFTER showering.

Remember kids, prepositions are important!

The company has a primer? As to the axe thing, I used to use it for that on the occasions that were unavoidable, airsoft for a weekend then the group decides to snag a sunday dinner before we all go our seperate ways. So inevitably we all smell like GUOs, but we do try to mitigate the smell as much as possible.

Well there is a very large difference between smelling like you were out running around and smelling like you haven't bathed in several days, I personally can't stand the thought of going out anywhere before I have showered for the day. Though at the college I attend it is clear that there are people who do not bathe everyday and I always feel sorry for their roommates, the one GUO I mentioned in a previous post in this thread got a single room every year because after the first day their roommate would go to the housing staff and complain and the roomate got a new room.

Heh, combine running with not showering for a few days, you can clear out a room pretty damn quickly. And the last part sounds almost intentional XD.

I wish it was intentional but it was not, he just refused to bathe he also had severe dandruff to the point when he turned in his laptop at the end of one school year he got fined heavily because they had to just throw the keyboard out. His GUO aura would hang around in a room for hours after he had left and it was clear that he had been in there at some point from the smell alone.

Have to say that the GM's of two of the gaming groups I have been in had houses/clothes that just stank of damp.

You can be clean in every way but still stink - it is not always because of bad hygiene.

Yep not to mention the people who shower too much smell as well, it's something about destroying your natural bacterial flora and acid sweating to kill new germs attacking you afair (so stay proud, GUOs, you have science behind you). Mouth smell also rarely comes from lack of hygiene but mostly from stomach problems or teeth in the state unfixable by brushing. Calling out on the smell, there's a big chance you will call out on somebody who is physicaly or psychicaly sick. Not saying that there are no real smelly swines who like to think they're venomthropes but most of the time it's something hard to combat for those people either because of overperspiring or sth. Being fat doesn't help too, I'm rarely delicate with fat people especialy seeing them with a big pack of chips or some gakky sweats but truth is some of them have real trouble keeping fresh in the warm environment and have bad natural smell from the start.

Wow this is unprofessional as hell. It's one thing to defend your store, but you're being petulant and using the "no u" defense. Maybe next time think your response out?

But out of curiousity, what would employees do if someone said "hey, your store reeks?" I can't imagine they'd throw the offenders out because the fact is, I've been involved in the industry a long time, and most stores see it as a cost of doing business.

BUT it doesn't stop homeless people coming into the store because in England homeless can also afford warhammer.

So yeah the only person who ever smells is him but even he showers every 3-4 days and even he knows he smells and tells us when he showers.

There is also my friend who showers less becaus of an on going joke that he doesn't shower but now the joke is gone and he is normal again lol.

I'm new here, so I may as well post in a thread where new people are posting...

This "gamer stink" thing, I never believed in it. My own local game shop is a shining beacon, a veritable cathedral with twenty foot high ceilings and a cavernous back room. I never thought of it as anything special, if anything the odor there is just a hint musty.

Then I moved to a small town with a gaming store the size of your average living room, which regardless tried to host tournaments of various things. One fine Friday night I walked in to find a tournament of "collectible card game I don't know anything about" going on, and at last discovered gamer funk in person.

Some observations: the participants were invariably of a certain awkward age and look. The sort of men who clearly are boys, but seem to have sprouted to six and half feet tall and 30% overweight overnight. All had splotchy, uneven mustaches, sarcastic sneers as they addressed one another, and clothes that seemed always to be two sizes too small. The tight clothes were especially unsettling, as it allowed pudgy bellies and pale back side to expose itself constantly in that hellish place between shirt and waistband. Massive, grungy backpacks and fanny packs were in profusion. Bicycles were piled up outside, hinting that every boy present had exercised strenuously to get here, each carrying a heavy, now sweat-soaked, backpack.

My final impression: these were boys who just hit full puberty, unaware that hormonal changes in their bodies require newer, more stringent hygiene. They had peddled across town on a summer afternoon, then packed their bodies into a room barely twenty by twenty feet with no windows. I fully understand their mistake, and how this could happen. I could imagine I must have done the same when I was their age.

That said, that smell hit like a solid wall as you entered the store. It was the kind of smell that gets into the products sold there, and clings to your clothes after you've left.

I feel lucky, at our store..no one stinks. Which is good due to the fact i am the loud point blank type that would inform them to return home..wash..then come back. That said.. i will stray slightly..and say there is one who when eats..always..ALWAYS is right in someones ear..literally within a foot of them..and eats like a cow chewing cud. time and time again i have said..gtfa from me but..his reply is. "i chew loudly" haha.

I was at a FLGS near one of the old GW stores, and one of the people who showed up smelled so bad that I started losing just to get out.

If the smell is really bad, you should come out and say that they smell too bad to play against. You are not doing anything wrong by doing that.

If you leave because of the smell, tell the manager, and tell them who it is if possible; they will take action if you leave.

There is one person considered the "stinky guy" at our store. I've never really noticed an issue with him, but others swear on it. I can think of a couple occasions where folks have come in and the whole store started smelling like swamp butt... and this is a big open store. But largely, we've got a good crowd here.

#3 Neither the MTG or 40k communities smell bad, and i play them all the time

Did I really say they did? Maybe I did. Didn't ment to make it that All people smell. Not all people but some people do. But that one day, someone sure did.

#4 If you have something bad to say about a store, SAY IT TO THE EMPLOYEES!!!! Not to a forum.

Oh but I did. Right away I said something to the cahsier. The person was appologetic but embarressed as well. Nothing he could really do. What could he have said? I told him when I walked in the back, I couldn't stay, it was really bad B.O. He said it wasn't an all the time thing, and I understood that. Also, did I say something bad about the store? I am sure I said it was the people or the person, not the store.

Because forums can't fix your problems. So, I believe you owe Jay, Rob and the rest of the employees a sincere apology.

Sincerely,
Red, Hero to the people of Black Knight Games

I know the forum can't fix my problems. It wasn't the point. The point was to show, some people do smell and everyone should check themselves to make sure it's not them. Maybe what I should have done was go into the back room, and say "Excuse me Please! There is really bad B.O. and some people need to shower." Is that what I should have done?

Do I owe an apology? No I don't think so? Why? What did I do was so wrong? I will say Sorry, if I made it out that BKG store smells. I thought I didn't, but I know I am not good with my words, so if I said that and made the store look bad, then yes I am sorry. So if that is the case, then yes, I am sorry, you guys have an excellent store. But to say that one day, I came in and one or more people stunk really badly and made me sick where I had to leave? No I can't say sorry for that. I don't think I did anything wrong.

*edit* I just reread my post, and yes, I have nothing to be sorry for. I didn't say anything bad about the store. I said something about the people who were at that store that day. That has nothing to do with the store, but the person who attended.

A great deal of Great Unwashed Ones at my LGS with the magic crowd....All of the 40k players there, including warmachine, KoW, FoW, ext. Are all decent bathing folks.

Why must so many magic players smell like a gym bag I shall never know.

Some serious GUOs at the Con I just went to in Denver this weekend. I'm bringing cans of axe and air freshener next time and cosplaying as the hygiene fairy.

This is why our FLGS and Convention staff team all carry febreeze cans and are not afraid to use them. Almost 30 years on the gaming scene and the GUO has been there every step of the way.

Whether or not it's legally assault or not it's certainly being a . You have the right to leave because you don't like how someone smells and take your money with you, but you do NOT have the right to spray someone with your chosen scent (especially when many people find those sprays repulsive). You will absolutely deserve it when someone punches you in the face for doing it.

I go to a college where it's nearly all girls, so having decent personal hygiene is like as second nature to me now lol

The only local game shop in Tucson is absolutely horrible with this issue. The problem is two-fold however, gamers with extremely poor hygiene and owners who are just outright slobs. The smelly gamers never have to really worry about getting called out by the owners as they keep the place just shy of looking and smelling like a pig sty. The shop keeps their trash cans inside. I am not talking about a wastebasket, I am talking about the big 55 gallon, waste disposal sized, trash bins. So if they all eat pizza the day after trash pick-up, that leftover pizza and whatever else was shoved into their mouths stays there for the whole week. The smelly ass gamers just take their cue from the owners and the whole place smells like rotten swamp ass all the time.

I remember one of their smellier gamers traveled to Phoenix for a big 2 day tournament and he literally slept in his car from one day to the next. The first day he already reeked, the second day he was pretty much unbearable.

Whoa now tiger, take a deep breath. Let your jimmies de-rustle. Everyone was having fun mocking people who fear soap till you got your panties in a twist, are you perhaps a GUO yourself?

It makes sense though, asthma or allergy can make spraying random people a bad idea. That doesn't mean they suddenly have an excuse to ignore the idea of hygiene entirely however.

This is true.

It's a funny idea, but some people have serious allergies, and you DO NOT want to be that guy stuck with his hospital bill.

Just call them out on it as respectfully as you can.

The unwashed gamers give the hobby a bad name. I have no objections if people decide to grow long hair, or a beard, or grow their nails long. That doesn't bother me in the slightest. What makes me almost retch is their disregard for basic hygiene. They might care passionately about the hobby, or computer gaming, and want to spend every minute of their waking day on painting/gaming/whatever but surely they can spend 10 minutes under a shower with a bar of soap. And then put on some clean clothes.

If you can't tell then wash every day just to be sure!

And these people wonder why they don't have girlfriends...

I once started stuffing my figures manically into my carry case once to avoid a post game handshake. I'm all for good manners, but they go out of the window when I am likely to contract something.

It does irk me though when people don't take personal hygene seriously, I mean it's not that hard to shower once or twice a day, wash your hair a couple of days a week, brush your teeth twice a day and not wear the same clothes days on end.

I bet any money that the GUO is the reason you don't see many female gamers.

Thankfully my local store has a air deodorizer. It's a hardcore air freshener that has a little fan in it and there's changeable scent things that go in it to cut down on the reek. We have them at Lowe's as well, but the recreated scent of fresh cut grass smells more like fresh ripe ass.

I agree with the MTG and card players represent the majority of the GUO's around my area and regardless of when you go into the store there's at least 6-10 people playing.
