40,000 Points of Necrons @ 2012/08/10 19:10:36

Post by: [So]Rice

Hello everyone,

Lazuli Miniatures Studios here with the most insane project we have ever received, 40k points of Necrons. Previously we had painted a 3,000 point Apocalypse army for the customer and he was so happy he had us to do another 40,000 points.

The Team

Head Artist: [So]Rice | -=Lazuli=-
Artists: elotsip, Kobayashi, tpistole
Trainee Artists: sivooo, Lynn, phanda, artie, Kameron, m3ndo, Mandrake

The models:

We started with the 6 Flying Saucers (sorry forgot what they are called!):

Since he wanted us to continue the black and silver theme, we cleverly did two color spray painting:

The assembled ships, 3AM

More to come later, thanks for looking!

That flyer looks....bland.

No cool glowing from its hull?

Do Necron vehicles ever actually show battle damage (living metal fixes that, doesn't it?)

It looks good and all that but why on earth does someone need 40K points worth of an army? When are they ever going to practically use all of that in a battle, let alone finish the battle in any given time frame!

Yes, but wear and tear always looks awesome. It could be damage happening at the moment, flying through flak or whatever. The only thing that could be missing is edge highlights but I guess that's expecting a bit much if you are intending to finish them quick (that appears to be the purpose)

Forty thousand points of 'Crons is awesome. But I'm afraid that colour scheme, unless it gets some Gauss glow added in, is way to basic. I'll be keeping an eye on this and hope that the colour scheme may become more exciting in time.

Yes, there will be decal and gauss effects on the weapons, but not the hull.

I am not sure, I don't play Wahammer There will be a little bit of glowing, not too much.

Apparently is has an opponent with a 40,000 Eldar Army ready to go. How or where they are going to play I don't know ^_^

Thanks for all the replies, the flyers are a bit boring with no weapons, but the other units will pop a bit more. And what is there all to paint... There are 6 Battleforces, a Necron Phalanx, 6 of the Flyers, 4 Walkers, 10 Spyders, 15 boxes of Tombguard (?), about 300 or 400 Necron Warriors, a ton of Finecast/Metal Characters and a lot more.

I don't know how someone could complete a 40000 point battle in under 24 hours. Good luck with all that painting.

Also, those Tombguard you mentioned, they are either Tomb Blades (small flying things) or Lychguard (Guys with Scythes/Sword & Shield)

Will be interested to see this come together.

Though I would have to echo the bland comments - was expecting at least a little bit of green or something in the runes.

I can't say I'd like to have 40,000 points worth of an army, but I'd like to have the cash it took to buy 40,000 points worth of an army.

Anyway, I echo others in saying that it looks a tad "basic", but considering it's a commission for a huge amount of models I imagine quality is less important than speed at this point. Details can always be added later anyway.

So they can have a room dedicated to a painted Diorama of Necron versus Spess Mehrenes. Its fun collecting.

The paintjob is lacklustre and leaves alot to be desired. I don't quite understand why the client cheaped out on the paint job after paying for 40000 points of crons.

I agree with the comments regarding paint scheme. More use of colors is a must, what good is an epic 40,000 pt army without an epic paint scheme?

On the other hand, if I were asked to paint 40k points of anything, I would need 2 lifetimes to finish them. I respect anyone who dares to attempt this colossal feat.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I was on vacation last week, but I'm back now!

That is 300+ Necrons Warriors in unassembled form. We are waiting on another 100-200 to arrive and we had already painted around 100 for the client last round.

@progreen10: I have a team of seven working on this project, 5 of them are "trainee" painters and this will be their first project. I can always call in more people if needed I'll get a picture of us all tomorrow.

@Tunach: I would like to do that but I don't think the client would like it ^_^

@BeLozey: The finished models will have a lot more color, I have not done any of the green gauss but we will probably have it glowing OSL like.

Also a quick plug for you Zombicide and Sedition Wars fans, just because we have a Tomb World's worth of Necrons doesn't mean we aren't taking other commissions (in fact we have about 2 dozen in house), we are running specials on Exhibition Standard painted sets. There are 5 slots left for Zombicide and 4 left for Sedition Wars. Zombicide will run at $450 and Sedition Wars at $350.

Thanks for looking as always!

The title for this blog immediately caught my eye, and I found myself wondering aloud to no one in particular, "Where would you store 40,000 points worth of Necrons??" I love the new Necrons and all, and Necrons in general, but 40K worth is too mind-boggling. Still, I look forward to seeing if you and your team can pull it off. Best of luck, Necron painter!

Tomb Spyders finished 12AM-5AM. 4 hours assembly and 1 hour painting.

Sleep from 5:30 to 6:30, other trainee artists came over at 7. Here is what the studio currently looks like:

Left Row: Lynn, sivooo, Kameron
Right Row: m3ndo, Artie, phanda

Lynn gluing Necrons legs.

sivooo and Artie cleaning mold lines.

Thanks again for looking, will update once more at the end of the day.

Another update, ended our 12 hour shift. Finished assembling 196 Necron Warriors and 48 Scarab Swarms. Pretty impressive considering that this is the first time most of the trainees have even seen miniatures. And yes, all the mold lines are gone! Here are some more pictures.

Assembled Figures.

Not pictured are 50 or so Warriors that Kobayashi is working on and many more that we have not received from the client yet.

Korean Pop music, and lots of coffee keeps us awake. OPPA GANGNAM STYLE!

For those who asked: The Hello Kitty Alarm clock is there to time our breaks ^_^

Lynn doesn't know how to assemble Necron heads.

Also these came in the mail today:

Official Lazuli Miniatures Studio T-Shirts courtesy of Derek Anderson of Freelance Art Studios.

Thanks again for reading, encouraging words are welcome, we are going to need a lot more encouragement to finish everything!

And one last thing, we are not able to disclose the amount paid for on this commission, it is between the Studio and the client, so please don't ask! We have pricing guides on the website if you would like to do a rough estimate.

I dare someone to commission us 40k worth of Orks I couldn't be THAT bad! Although I do envy those people who ONLY have to paint a Space Marine Company...

Thanks! The painting is on the low end of what we offer and the commission is large, but not something I can't handle ^_^ I might be young, but the rest of the main artists (not trainees) have all been painting longer than I have been alive!

Wrapping up another successful day. Almost all the assembly has been completed. I need to put together 5 Transport ships, 3 Pyramids (Monoliths?), 45ish Tomb Blades, and 30ish-50ish Special Characters and metal figures Kobayashi still has another 50 Necron Warriors, Monolith, 6 Destroyers, 12 Beetle Swarms, and a Commander Figure. I am still waiting on another 50-100 Warriors, Transport Ship, Monolith, and some other things from the client.

Apologies, but I cannot make a points estimate for you. I have not played Warhammer 40,000 since 4th Edition (and only a few games) and this is one of the first 40k armies I have worked on since (we mainly specialize in boardgame). I would say the picture is about half of the models. Here is a list of a rough estimate of what is in the entire army (going by box titles, not sure the names of the configurations):

Illuminator Szeras
Trazyn the Infinite
4 Lords
1 Destroyer Lord
17 Immortal (Metal)
2 Crypteks
4 Overlords
3 Annihilation/Catacomb Barges
6 Ghost Arks
6 Monoliths
384 Warriors
50 Scarab Swarms
18 Tomb Blades
40 Immortals
40 Tomb Guard
4 Triarch Stalker
C'tan Shard of The Nightbringer
15 Flayed Ones (metal)
6 Doom Scythes
15 Wraiths
15 Wraiths (metal)
50 Destroyers

I won't have an exact number until everything is in once place but I think that's it!

Day 5 wrapped up, Kobayashi (William T.) showed up today to help us out a bit, here is the army shot so far. Still missing 6 Ghost Arcs, 30ish Destroyers, 150ish Warriors, 35ish Immortals, 15ish Wraiths, 2 Monoliths, 20ish Flayed Ones, and a ton of heroes.

Playing League of Legends on breaktime, anyone who plays, message me for Gamer Tags!

Not part of this commission, but some other Necrons Keerplunk painted for another client, shows how much work we can put on these models:

That's quite the sweat shop you've got going there.
Whoever was stuck on mold-line duty is going to have carpal tunnel by the time you get 25k finished.

Also, you should tell the guy in the plaid shirt to stop trying to eat the sprue, its counter-productive.

Whoever this client is, they're either one wealthy businessman, or one incredibly spoiled child. I think they bought Matt Ward a new car with their purchases.

See this project makes me feel so bad. I bought a single set of lyche guard a month ago and have only just assembled two...

Anyway, great work everyone!

He's probably eating the sprue so he doesn't have to clean the mold lines! ^_^

Thanks! Your Necrons are higher quality and plus you don't have sweatshop workers! I I mean trainees.

We have assembled everything (I think!). There will be no updates for awhile as school starts tomorrow and unfortunately this commission doesn't pay for all of our college!

Oh dear god... but somehow not as frightful (thus far) looking as a 10k Apoc list I saw that consisted of:

Imotekh
Orikan the Diviner
C'tan with Writhing Worldscape and that dust one that gives him cover and assault and defensive grenades
4 squads of 5 immortals
and then a gak ton of Pylons and Doomscythes and Nightscythes

(Yes, if the owner of these necron models happens to be a dakka member, I'm encouraging him to get Pylons. Too much Cron? NEVER ENOUGH!!!!!)

He'd be walking into his local gamestore an go:

Anyways, great work, I don't envy you having to paint a gazzilion more of them though!

Hello Dakka,

Been awhile, but we just had another work day. I estimate only 2 or 3 or sessions until everything is completed!

For more pictures check out and like our Facebook Page here:
https://www.facebook.com/lazulipainting

No the best picture since a ton of models that wouldn't fit are missing, but here is what the army looks like so far. Everything at least has some paint on it except the Tomb Blades:

Here is the only way for the entire army to fit on one table:

2AM and I have 6 Arks all cut out:

Note to people building Necrons: Do not cut out all your Ghost Arks and put them in a pile. Each Ark is about 170 pieces, I mean who designs a model with a separate pieces for the neck?!?

Completed... Oh wait...

Remember to take your paint fumes seriously, until next time!

If you like your work and would like to see some of our other work, check out our Facebook Page, here is a look at some WiP German models for DUST:

DUST Warfare is a great game, you should try it sometimes. The figures are really cheap and that's a plus too.

Very true, now I can file tax breaks because I'm opening jobs due to this trick-down economics thing right?

Here is what the table looked like after our last session, I haven't had time to take close ups yet, but everything is almost done:

Stunning. What an incredible task to undertake. Hats off.
I can't even imagine how much the primer would cost for these models.
I sure hope you are being paid hansomely for this. Assembly alone would destroy my tender finger tips. Considering pain and suffering from that, I would estimate this job would cost somewhere around $96,403.
Wait, I need to adjust for inflation (considering it would take years for me to complete). 6 figures, easy.

That was the Studio at the end of the day, still missing a few hundred scarab swarms from the pictures. Thank you Lynn, White Phanda, sivooo, m3ndo, Kameron, and Mandrake for the work they put into this project. I would like to also thank our guest painters Kobayashi, Caroline, Yadira, and Kevin for showing up to help and give morale support. Together we put in over 500 man hours into this and we're finally glad it's all done. Pictures will have to wait until later, we pulled a 12 hours shift to finish today and went to party afterwards, happy painting all!

Maybe just get a big cardboard box and try to fit all of them in there. Maybe X amount of boxes will do.

thats just biblical to do, have, hell even present that

i mean the largest army iv'e seen would be 10k of guard but this ups the ante on a whole new level.
