Webstore is now open, any outstanding pledges should get in contact with Patrick about fulfillment (apparently some slipped through the cracks).

Bombshell Babes is a kickstarter project intended to help launch Sculptdude Patrick Keith's Bombshell Miniatures line of boutique female miniatures.

I wondered what this was when Andy linked this on his FB page. Interesting concept. I wonder how much wailing and gnashing of teeth it will cause?

Hehe! I really do hope it comes out well, I'm a sucker for a classy dame. It'll be interesting to see if the eclectic mix of genres is a help or hindrance. It's really for the fans of female minis in general, rather then particular game systems.

The Sally concept art looks fantastic. Retro-sci-fi but with a modern feel. Excellent stuff and not total cheese.

Looks promising so far, but not a fan of the mixed genres that they've chosen for the Kickstarter. I realize that is what they're going for with this range, but out of all the models they've shown so far only 2 actually interest me. If they add a few more Sci-fi models in the future i probably will back this campaign.

I really like the Maelee concept art, but i think the pinup girl with the over-sized wrench model has been done way too many times already.

Also does anyone know what scale these models are going to be? couldn't find that info on the actual KS page.

There is quite a bit of info buried in that block of text labeled "the babes", including this bit;

the figures so they will be compatible with other models from the most popular manufacturers within the 30mm range

I would say this is a rather coy way of stating that the figures will be designed to fit in with the "near 30mm," ranges, like GW's heroic scale 28s. It's only a guess though, I'll relay any info once some actual figures start making the rounds.

I'm going to break down that paragraph into bullets for easier consumption in the OP.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Update #2 posted, and the first of the stretch goal minis revealed, Atomic Punks!

Please note, the minimum pledge level is Bomb Kit ($75) to get these minis.

Great looking concepts, but very expensive for what you actually get. I guess that's where the term "Boutique" comes into play.

Really? At around $10 per metal mini, I hardly think that's expensive. That's pretty standard, or even low, for many of the companies out there.

And, no, I don't think this is Bones/Sedition Wars status where the KS will end with more models than you can carry. But, I do think in the end that the minis will be extraordinary and at a very competitive price.

It starts with $15 for one, and then goes to $25 for two, $30 for one, $55/75 for four. It does get closer to $10 each when you're paying in the $150 range, but that'd be assuming I like all of the figures enough to get them all (or 2-3x of each, possibly). I don't expect this to be like Reaper either (did anyone even suggest that?). Since I don't need to own every nice looking sculpt of a female miniature, I figure I'll just buy the same sculptors' work from Reaper, et al. when I want a specific figure or it's in the FLGS and it's an instant, impulse purchase, rather than pay twice the price (or more!) 6 months before receiving them. If you're keen to pay what's being asked for this kickstarter then fine, no problem, more power to you. I don't intend to have a big argument here, I'm just sharing my opinion in the same way as anyone else.

I'm not sure about it, either.

I especially feel it's kind of misleading that you can buy >3 minis, but the kickstarter only starts with 3 sculpts (in both cases, plus the exclusive) but six shown (as unlockable)... dunno if anyone else feels that way.

nope, I believe he'll actually, genuinely need some money to come rolling in to actually sculpt and tool a larger number of models.
...at least I have no proof to the contrary.

what bothers me though, is stating stuff like rosie the riveter as inspiration. Rosie was tasteful, exuded a sense of strength etc... this is all just the same old cheesecake to me. now that's fine with me (I just won't pay a dime for it, but if others like it, have fun!) but it would be an understatement to say that after reading the pitch, this all rather disappoints. Technical quality of the sculpts appears to be good, I'll give him that.

I'm not sure how that's misleading. We tried to structure the levels so that if a backer wanted additional copes of the models, for friends, clubs or whatnot, they had more choices to get multiple models. If a backer feels they only want to pick one or two from the available selections, we have levels for that too.

That reference was inspirational. Can you give me an example of a character that you would like to see produced? You won't even need to back the "Design Your own Babe" level to suggest it. This is good. I'd buy one of these but feel that it probably wouldn't do well in sales.

I think a lot of hobbyists often look for figures that are both attractive and sensible (within the context of lore). Many times that translates kinda poorly.

There's always room for sexy and I don't think anyone will disagree when I say we're not really lacking in that department where female minis are concerned. Not saying girls can't be sexy and 'serious business' but we tend to overstate one aspect over the other. I want both in equal measure.

Edit: Ultimately, I guess it depends on what the finished mini looks like.

This actually makes a good point, albeit perhaps unintentionally: the most "realistic" female minis of soldiers... would be absolutely indistinguishable at scale from males.

That first image is especially telling: if you didn't tell me that was a woman, and I had to go off of... I don't even know, other then very, very subtle areas of nose and eyes, that picture could be a lot of teenage guys I see waiting at the recruiting center.

The simple fact is, sculpting female minis requires some exaggeration, and it's hard to get right. If you doubt that, take a gander at the reveal of Sedition Wars Jada Lily mini, where more then one poster said "she looks like a tranny".

To say nothing of the fact that unarmored women soldiers... kinda just look like women in fatigues (q.v. the Israeli fighting woman, also, wow, uniform regs in Israel aren't the strictest it would appear...).

If the final product is both awesome and implausible, well, that's what they invented the rule of cool for.

Thanks for the response. It's been a bit of a known issue with the scale of miniatures that, as you pointed out, certain aspects need to be prominent to distinguish them as female.

It just didn't make sense to suggest more of the same. Again, I'm not putting down the miniatures that are produced since many of them appeal to me as well, I was only making an observation. That's why I edited my previous post. I wanted to make a caveat that the final product is what matters most (read:rule of cool).

I'd like to see a relatively* realistic modern female warrior. Special forces type, lots of gear on hand. *Proportioned to be easily recognizable as a woman, but not vulgar.

I'd also love a '60's inspired secret agent. Something very British Avengers-style.

Looking good so far, but I agree that most of these are pretty cheesecake. I'd personally love to see some women in more reasonable medieval armor. Like, without giant boob cups molded into the armor. There's very little of that out there. Bonus points for spiked female spiked armor that doesn't look like bondage gear.

Looking at the Kickstarter again, I noticed that there's mention of creatures and vehicles being cast in resin - are accessory sprues also resin? - but the bombshells are explicitly stated to be metal. Does Bombshell Miniatures have any plans to produce their line of female figures in resin?

And, if I'm understanding it correctly, I can purchase Babes for $10 each at any level. So I'd be able to pledge $1 at the Rack Level and then add $$ to it purchase X number of Babes?

As I read it, yes: that is, you can purchase minis from the "Bombshell Babes" category: to purchase the minis unlocked strictly as stretch goals (right now, that's just the Atomic Punks), you have to have pledged at the Bomb Kit level.

What is interesting, and throws off the figure calculation, is that the KS exclusive Maelee mini is valued at like $25, the implication thus far being that this mini will get some specific addons, or accessories or something.

I am really looking forward to seeing some greens (or whatever color such things are these days); the concept art thus far is quite nice, but as we all know, the rub is the translation from page to play-doh.

Take something like this.

or this:

Increase the bust slightly. Unhelmeted head with pony tail, or baseball cap with ponytail through the cap-hole

Voila! Female modern combatant who looks realistic, reasonable feminine, and not like a stripper's costume. Not everything needs to be tits-out or wearing a crop-top, after all. Not that I dislike that sort of thing, but there's already plenty out there. You might even get more women buying the figures(!)

I agree it would be nice to see more of that type of figure, something less overtly sexualised, but in this case (and especially considering the title and listed aims of the KS) I feel it would be kind of like asking Playboy magazine to feature more photos of smart metrosexual women wearing trousers!

Think some of these look like fun anyway, and the low pledge amount for a mini or two is quite nice, can see them making quite nice gift/display pieces!

Outside the scope? Really?

For several years now I have been wanting to launch a new boutique line of miniatures featuring strong female characters. Although I'm using terms like "Bombshell" and "Babes" to describe the line, these characters are much more than either of those outdated terms.

"Strong female characters" must be dressed in hot pants and tank tops?

I linked the Hasslefree minis because they look much more aboe to be distinguishable as female/women than this while still looking "realistic".

then again - you could be right. There seems a slight disconnect between the phrase "Bombshell Babes" and their stated aims. While Tank Girl and The Girl and Barbarian Babe aren't exactly a stretch towards new ground.

There is one particular mini that I would be delighted to see: an unarmored, unarmed female suitable for use as a monk/martial artist type character. I'm thinking a women ith the proportions of an MMA fighter, (Kyra Gracie, of the Gracie jujitsu dynasty shown below left), or Ronda Rousey (somewhat hyperbolically named by Rolling stone as "best female fighter ever", although extra special bonus points for her views on Kardasians though, below right and center).

In a pose similar to that of the immortal Bruce Lee (q.v. his statue outside Hong Kong);

That sort of outfit; simple shoes, those slightly bloused, loose pants for fighting (a bra or breast band, of course) would be awesome. As the pictures above show, women fighters have a particular look, with a very toned core, but also a bit more heft in the shoulders, upper arms and back then any of the shown examples (indeed, then any female minis I've managed to find).

Now, I realize that "The Girl" is already kinda a martial arts-y figure, but she appears to have very delicate proportions, a sword (obviously) and a kind of specific fantasy garb that makes her look a bit more... exotic? More specific to a particular place and time, and definitely not the proportions or stance that has eluded me.

I'm thinking more a female equivalent to the characters Bruce Lee played in... well, everything, or Kain from Kung-Fu; the itinerant martial artist adventurer.

Just something I've been looking for for a while.

Well, it does make anatomy a tad easier to see, wouldn't you agree?

Also, the argument for "practical clothing" is just one of those interminable arguments that seems to hang around Dakka like smoke in a bar. Personally, I do not see "practical clothing" as in the spirit of this kickstarter, to be honest, given, well, all the examples of art posted in the kickstarter.

Rather then get into an argument, I think we can stipulate that this is not the kickstarter for people looking for ultra-realistic true-scale minis.

I believe the reason all of this came up, Buzzsaw, was because of this:

They want to see what the collective wants - makes sense, give people what they want and they'll buy it - so people are just shooting out ideas. You shouldn't confuse sensible or not overtly-sexualized with ultra-realistic, either, they're different.

Suggestion:

I would like to see a sci-fi female combat medic. Think fem-Apothecary. Essentially, a front-line combatant that doubles as a doctor/medic; so not just a simple triage nurse or field doctor or red cross insignia planted somewhere on her person, but a tough as nails regular soldier with tools of her trades (killing and healing) evident on her.

Right! All of our models are intentionally stylized and exaggerated for heroic presence when they are 1.5" tall and viewed from the tabletop.

Having said that, you all have posted GREAT examples of exactly the kinds of figures we want to make. I don't think they will be as "realistic" as a Tom Meier sculpt, but the quality should be comparable to what Dark Sword is putting out, because I sculpt for them.

I love the boxer character idea as well as the reference for it. I feel she is attired appropriately for stepping in the ring, but she's gonna need some shorts. We already have a Modern/Sci-fi Marine-style figure in the works and I'm waiting on art to come in from the designer. I don't know if any of you have seen the current posted art on the project, but I think what is represented is far from glassy-eyed, tits-out, vapid sex objects. Other Armed Forces characters are also in the works but we have to start somewhere.

As far as the "a la cart" pledging - it work exactly as described. You can back for $1 and then add on as many things from the Additional Support list for the amounts listed. Maelee has an assistant we'll throw in for free, if we can get to that point. Weapon/accessory sprues in metal are planned. Giant resin robots and a rocket bike are planned. Also - we have some freebies we're going to add on to the Babes at every level if we reach our funding goal today!

And we're getting really close . . .

Congratulations again Keith!

I must say, the larger art in the concept gallery is just great. If I wasn't already sunk, Sally here would have done me in;

Work well over the weekend, we're chomping at the bit to see these ladies in the proverbial "flesh".

Edit: for those that don't pore over the OP, the feature probably most important to those wavering on pledges;

NEWS
I was contacted by Valiant Enterprises yesterday about our casting needs. The specifics are still being worked out, but we are looking at making a deal with them to have our resin pieces cast by them. Reaper Miniatures will be handing the metal production for all of the main Babe models.

As your first perk for jumping in early and backing the project to completion way before the deadline, we will upgrade EVERY Babe model with a resin scenic base insert! That's right, all of the Babe models will now come with a resin base insert that will have unique terrain features appropriate to the characters. The base insert will be scaled to fit inside of the depression on a 30mm premium round-lipped base common to many tabletop games. I have created numerous base inserts just like these for Wyrd Miniatures and we are happy to be able to include them with each of our Babe models.

Although I have to agree, a strong iconic female character would definitely be a business woman nursing her child, I'm not sure what genre we could drop that into . . .

Actually a decently sculpted business woman with a suitable pose (optional clipboard/mobile phone/handcannon) would be remarkably useful for roleplayer characters or as I might use her, a Liquidations Accountant from the Administratum (counts as Commissar).

There was an FAQ put up yesterday taht I missed, that I think really increases the value of some pledge levels;

If I pledge and select a reward that includes a shirt, can I trade the shirt for a different reward?

Yes. You may choose two additional Babes instead of the shirt for backer levels that include a shirt. At the end of the project we will send a survey to all backers and if you choose a shirt you can indicate the size at that time. If you select not to get the shirt you can indicate which Babes you would rather get instead.

"Urban"?

Considering some of the crazy stuff that makes it into most "Zombie Survivor" or "Post-Apoc" ranges (street pimps, clown samurai, etc.), a figure that represents a significant demographic in modern society should be a piece of cake.

EDIT: Even without the baby, I doubt we'll ever see a successful modern woman who isn't some kind of cheesecake fetish.

Are they taking suggestions?

I'd like to see a character Like Dita Von Teese with some weapons that looks like this.

http://www.dita.net/galleries.php

Maybe give her a "The Shadow" look, or add in a pet Ghost, or something. That Black and White in the Dress looks cool, too. Maybe even give her a Pet Zombie or something. (that Modern Necromancer look.)

As to the "Strong" females... How about doing some like a Replicant, from Aliens. The one that Wynona Ryder played. Then there was every 13 year olds fantasy from back in the day-

Adrien Barbau. Put her in anything. People really got chibi over her in my day.

Maybe do Female versions of Action star heros.

Either the individuals, such as like using the exact opposite of the characters, ( Make Detective Joan McClain- Die hard)( The Hellcat- Chick Nora) ( Robocop- A female version of Alice Murphy)

Or you can do Teams, such as change out The A Team, or The Expendables heros for the ladies.

Other ones, I'd like to see are some of the singers from the Psychobilly Gener.

Hellcat, from The Creepshow, Patrica Day, from The Horror pops, Mad Marge. Imellda May. Just give them some weaponry, but keep them in thier regular gear.

Another bad assed idea would be to do a Cal MacDonald/ Mordac team in Female version.

Yeah.... that might be pretty cool.

A great Update, So I'll take the liberty of lifting most all of it!
Thank you, Backers!

Reaching our funding goal and unlocking our first stretch goal within 5 days is very exciting! You have helped make The Girl available as our first stretch goal reward to be added as an additional Babe reward selection. Now every backer level that has a Babes option as a reward selection will get to include The Girl as one of their choices. But that's not all!

As a bonus for reaching our first stretch goal we have added the HLpR Bot as an assistant to every Maelee model. Every Maelee will now come with this scrappy little sidekick to help her with her many repair tasks. HLpR is like a Swiss Army Knife of hidden appendage tools, access interface ports and retro rocket boosters.

Stretch Goal - $30,000 Betty and Shrapnel

If we reach this funding goal Betty & Shrapnel will be available as a regular Babes choice for backer levels that have Babes choices as an option. There will also be an additional perk for the Babes that will be added at that time.

I second the idea of a business suit-clad model, especially if she is packing heat.

While I am at it: a scientist. Long white coat, test tube in hand, long flowing, curly hair, glasses on tip of nose.

An Enlightenment Era French noblewoman, complete with bouffant hair and elaborate dress.

A sexy nun with a shotgun? Sometimes sisters have to watch out for one another.

By the way, I wanted to let people know about something from the kickstarter comments section; there was a question of getting Sally Starfield (the Sci-Fi figure with the rocket pack) a classic bell-jar style helmet, and it looks like it may happen!

I found a place online that makes little pre-made vacuform tables for hobbyists. They are very affordable and much better for small print runs than a couple of the quotes I got back from some thermoforming shops. The main use is for hobby forming like R/C car and plane parts, canopies and such. If we can work out a way to form up our helmet shapes and replicate a sheet of them, they can be vacuformed from clear plastic. That means we'll have to do it in-house as opposed to contract but at the quantities we would need it shouldn't be a problem.

That makes me very hopeful. Concept art is cool, and renders are much, much better, but seeing this level of fidelity puts a backer at ease.

The KS page says that you have to pledge at the bomb kit level to be eligible for stretch goal rewards... does that go for HLpR as well, or just additional add-ons?

Pretty sure that's just for the additional, buy-in models. For instance, the Atomic Punks are a buy-in at $10, but you can't even buy them until you're at Bomb level. (If you're familiar with the Bones KS, its like how you needed to be at Vampire level before you could buy paint, the case, or other models.)

The model "buddies" are just going to be additional pieces that come with the model. Betty has her gremlin, Mealee has her robot. Its its been heavily suggested to that many of the models will have these extra bits that will come along.

Edit: yep, the update says EVERY Mealee will come with her robot.

Over $30,000, Betty and Shrapnel are in!

While waiting for a proper update, some pictures from the Facebook Page;

EDIT: And the proper Update is arrived!
Thank you, supporters!

In under a week we have reached our initial funding goal and achieved two stretch goals. Bombardier Backers rock!
Target Acquired

We reached the goal to add Betty & Shrapnel as a choice for Babes rewards. As an additional perk, we will include an ammo dump marker in all BOMB KITS. This will be a resin drop-in piece that will fit inside the depression of a 40mm round-lipped premium style base. It will contain an assortment of scenic items like ammo boxes, crates, fuel cans and a tool kit. This piece can be used as a base for larger models or even an objective marker for your tabletop battles.

__________________________________________________________
Stretch Goal - $40,000 Atomic Punks Set

This makes our first Reinforcements set available that you may select as an add-on to BOMB KIT pledge levels and above for an additional pledge amount of $10. The set is Atomic Punks based on officially licensed art by Matt Dixon.

As an added perk, we will include an ancient Bombshell relic from the distant past.

If we reach the Atomic Punks goal, we will add a copy of Terri the Steampunk Cowgirl to every BOMB KIT for FREE! Yep, no extra pledge requested. Digging through our archives in the Bomb Lab we uncovered several molds from the ancient days of my first sculpting attempts. This figure was sculpted and released in a short run during 2005. It is extremely rare and no longer in production. We will cast just enough of these relics to include one in every BOMB KIT and the mold will be retired again.

_______________________________________________________
NEWS

I have been working with several of our fantastic artists to get more designs to you. Many of you expressed interest in seeing more choices available to the higher backer levels. We are whipping up a frenzy of designs to show you what is coming down the line. Each update we will be revealing new Babes that will be available as choices at the various levels. The place holder silhouettes you see currently on the Main Page only indicate there are more Babe designs pending that have not been revealed yet.

The current addition is Vivian Gale our fantastic Steampunk nautical Babe designed by Tim Collier.

We also added art for Professor Karrick & Thule by Patrick McEvoy as an upcoming Reinforcements set.

As we post more Official Updates™, we will be adding more and more art as it comes in. Our aim is to make the most Babes available to you at every level. We will have several more pieces to show you in the next installment.

For sculpting I am heavily bogged down in getting some high profile pieces done this week for my top clients. As soon as that wraps up, I will get you some new pics of all the Babes on the workbench. If any of you are in the area and want to see the Babes in person, I will be having a workshop at the Reaper Game Store and Factory next Saturday.

Reaper was kind enough to post my biggest contribution to their Kickstarter campaign for the Bones, their new Cloud Giantess.

Though I do like the classic cowgirl mini we'll be getting.

 BrookM wrote:

Yeah, this was something I was afraid of when I saw there was a $10k jump. I'm not really sure why Patrick structured it that way: the pledges still seem to be coming, but it's been heck on momentum. I think he made some adjustments to the FAQ, I'll make sure it's reflected in the OP.

EDIT: Hmm, some interesting bits there...
I want to pledge $100 or more, what do I REALLY get for all that?

At the $100 level the value of items can be considered like this: Postcards set $5, Shirt $20, Maelee & HLpR Bot $25, Shipping $11 to US backer only = $61. That leaves $39 for six Babes making them $6.50 each. $12 will still need to be added to all this to cover international shipping outside the US, even Canada.

Higher levels bring the price-per-choice of Babes down even more. Keep in mind ALL pledge levels include $11 shipping to US backers so that must be factored in as well. International backers will still need to include an ADDITIONAL $12 to the amount of their pledge in order to cover shipping outside the US, even Canada.

Every level at $75 and above includes what we've dubbed as the BOMB KIT. The BOMB KIT Level will expand with additional perks like the FREE 40mm resin Ammo Dump or FREE Bombshell Relics as more stretch goals are achieved! You may still trade the shirt during the survey after the close of the project for two additional Babes selections.

Do I have to add $12 international shipping if I only select a reward with one Babe or just a postcard set?

No. According to what we've been able to calculate, if you select pledge rewards containing up to 3 Babes and a Postcard set, international shipping is included with your pledge. If you select rewards that total more than 3 Babes and a set of Postcards, we will have to ship the items in a larger package. This applies to backers in Canada as well.

What studio is painting all of the models for the backer rewards and does that include their sidekicks?

They will be painted by one of our award winning painters to match our "Studio" copy that will be used for display and promotion of the Babes line. See the link under Contributors above for a complete list of tier-one talent involved in the project. Selecting an option with a painted Babe also includes any sidekicks or accessories that are offered along with her.

Update #6 up!
$35,000 Unlocks Dusty Paige as a Babes Choice!

We're with you, Backers!

For all our Bombardiers, after reviewing the Bombshell Kickstarter project, we have decided to restructure the Stretch Goals in order to prioritize unlocking single Babe choices. We feel this is in the best interest of all our backers within the active time of the project, so all levels will have an adequate selection to choose from as soon as possible. So as of $35,000, Dusty Paige has been unlocked!

Target Acquired

As a bonus, all Bomb Kits will included Bombshell Relic #1, Terri the Steampunk Cowgirl at this time as well!

Vivian Gale is now our target for $40,000. We will also add a FREE Squidman sidekick to the BOMB KIT at that time. Mat Dixon's 'Bug Spray' will be the $45,000 target. We will be posting more Babe targets soon.

We still plan on adding the Reinforcements after the Babe choices have been provided. We also plan to submit a list of the Reinforcements for you, our backers, to vote upon to determine the order of their release.

We want you to know we appreciate all your support! Hopefully we can do the best we can to get you the Babes that you want.

Update #7, $40,000 Unlocks Vivian Gale as a Babes Choice!
Nearing Target Lock!
We are almost to the point where we can fund putting Vivian Gale into production. After a little bit of restructuring our stretch goals, the new lineup looks fantastic! As soon as we reach the $40,000 mark we will add Vivan to the Target Acquired status and add a Squidman to every BOMB KIT!

We have revealed more Concept art for upcoming goals that are posted on the main page. Jump in and spread the word!

The support from backers so far has been fantastic! Let's keep the momentum going!

I'm really liking the concept art for pretty much all of them. Especially since many of them can actually fit into a number of genres and current games. I've got at least 3 for Infinity, 3 for Warmahordes, a couple for Relic Knights...

Granted, this is of course dependent on seeing some more WIP and the translation from art-to-model (although the cloud giantess gives a great deal of reassurance), but I'm begining to think I may need to go to Napalm ($150) level.

15 Babes, 2 more for a shirt, plus the Mechanic. We're looking at 12 right now if pledges reach $65,000, the only ones I am at all tempted to skip are the Maiden and Girl (ironically, the 2 with the least clothes...).

Tetsu Ko the Samurai at $50,000 has the potential to be amazing...

Don't forget that he has thrown in a bonus with every stretch goal. Custom resin bases, an ammo dump marker, extra minis like the squid.

I think by the end, the model count is going to be more like 25 for the top level.

As part of the PC crowd, I must say that I'm not offended, but disappointed. Disappointed that they went with such an obvious and straight-forward "single entendre" instead of putting in a little effort. We all knew there would be some sort of pun, but did it really have to be one they scribbled out during period 6 Social Studies?

I would have much preferred something like:
"Mounting Tension
After a hard day full of slamming action without release, Tension Plateau often relaxes by stroking her ...kitty, Rosebud."
Only wittier.

Seriously, I was hoping they would have a much higher caliber of crass. At this rate we'll end up with a smuggler babe named Hannah Lonely who comes with a fuzzy copilot, Chewboxxa. Or maybe we'll get an archaeologist named Virginia Maidenhead, who happens to be a cunning linguist.

What a missed opportunity.

That's a good point to keep in mind: the Matt Dixon art is under license from his "Vixens" project. I seriously doubt Patrick has the right to change the name. The Bug Spray is similar; really more artwork names then figure names.

Aaaaaaand, update #8 is live!

$45,000 Lays down some Bug Spray!

New Babe Target Bug Spray!

You guys really jumped in there and made Vivian happen bringing us a good chunk over $40K (which is a significant number to tabletop gamers). That puts us well on our way to laying down some suppressing fire to quell the hive.

$45,000+ Puts Matt Dixon's Vixen into the mixin' with Bug Spray! We will also add our second Bombshell Relic from days gone by Trixi the Recovery Agent to every BOMB KIT for absolutely FREE! This rare and out-of-production model was made early in my sculpting career and it will only be offered here during this Kickstater drive.

$50,000+ Will bring Tetsu Ko in from the deepest corners of the Far East.

And here are some additional Sneak Peeks at what's in store . . .

These are actually very small thumbnails that Tim did on the quick. There will be more refined art and even color versions coming down the line. But at least you can see a tangible representation of the character we have in mind this way. Very little will wind up changing in the final art, maybe a bit of gear or the pose but essentially this is what we will be making.

$55,000+ Adds Nowada, Warrior Queen from the darkest jungles of the past.

$60,000+ Allows Raven Sky to take command of your airship fleet.

$65,000+ Takes us along with Matt Dixon's Vixen Pussy Patrol. Complete with cat sidekick.

FAQ

We are still looking at how best to integrate the Reinforcements in with the Babe stretch goals at this time. We can tell you there will be at least 15 Babe choices before we introduce Reinforcements. We will be posting the rest of the art for the Reinforcements as it comes in, however. At the time we are ready to introduce them into the mix, we will take a poll that will allow you to select the priority that the Reinforcements are offered. We will keep you posted about this in future Official Updates™.

As for the t-shirt trades, you can only trade in a t-shirt for two more Babe choices, not the Reinforcement add-on sets.

Thanks everyone for all of your great input, support, spirited communication and participation. It is way beyond anything I could have hoped for already! Spread the word and let's keep these Babes rolling!

Honestly guys, I would have agreed with you 100% there if not for their disclaimer

Although I'm using terms like "Bombshell" and "Babes" to describe the line, these characters are much more than either of those outdated terms.

and the discussion of "these are not just more cheesecake minis" on the first page.

I don't have anything against breasts or cheesecake, but there's plenty of both around already. I've already got at least one female figure in hot pants with a big gun, What I like about (much of) this line is that it is a bit different and avoids chainmail bikini/Stripperella syndrome. Where else can you find something like Betty, or Dusty (no cleavage!) or Tetsu Ko?

Come on now, you're not that naive!

Clearly these miniatures are Bombshell Babes, in every sense of the word!

That's what they're selling, and that's why they're as successful as they are at this point in their campaign!

They are 'as advertised', and anyone 'shocked' or 'upset' at what they see when they walked into the store called "Bombshell Babes" is being more than a little silly/tempest in teacup!

Oh, I'm not shocked or upset. But I'm not above giving some snark to some of the figures if they are just a pair of breasts and legs holding a big gun or sword.

Having said that, I'm more than happy to give kudos when deserved, and most of the other figures are in fact something more interesting than more of the same chainmail bikini stuff we see so often. That's also why I put my money where my mouth is the other day.

If I get a bit more work under my belt, I will definitely up my pledge to the bomb kit level. Those sidekicks are a hoot, and imo take away from the over-sexualization of some of the models.

Same as someone has said before, I have little interest in the barbarians, I prefer the steampunk, working women in full outfit. Dusty would look great for firefly themed games.

Bug Spray is now in the mix now after passing $45, 000 so we're on to $50K next to bring Tetsu Ko all the way from the Far East! This fantastic design is created by Tim Collier.

If we reach the goal to unlock Tetsu Ko you will also get one Rafaeru-san sidekick in every BOMB KIT for absolutely FREE!

$55,000+ Adds Nowada, Warrior Queen from the darkest jungles of the past.

If we reach the goal to unlock Nowada she can join your tribe as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward. We will also include one Tazjh Hatchling

Sidekick in every BOMB KIT for absolutely FREE!
We have now added a whole set of Sidekicks!

If we reach the appropriate pledge goals you may be receiving some of the Sidekicks as part of the BOMB KIT pledge level for $75 at no additional cost. Now you can add an additional amount to your existing pledge to cover the cost of an extra set of awesome Sidekicks for your Babes! You may add them on at ANY pledge level in unlimited quantities. They are only available as an add-on as a complete set of five Sidekicks.

Thanks everyone for keeping it going this far! Let's keep rolling now towards bringing Tetsu Ko and Raferu-san on board!

Update #12 is Up!

The steady pace of added pledges and new backers has me completely amazed. You guys are doing a great job supporting the project and keeping it moving forward!

Here are a couple of things I've been working on, too.

Maelee and Betty are coming along nicely. Maelee has a few more details to add, but her gear and tools will likely be 3D printed and so won't be finished for a while. The wrench is just a placeholder for reference. Betty still needs the rest of her flight jacket, hair & cap as well as a few other details. This should give you a rough idea of how they are progressing.

New art is starting to come in and that will be posted as soon as it arrives. We have another awesome Reinforcements set designed by Patrick McEvoy that will be added next. You can see the fantastic design that Tim turned in for Nowada posted above. Our newest contributor Craig Elliott is hard at work on a forest dwelling Dryad Spirit and we will get that posted when it arrives as well.

I have been able to finish the two Dark Sword pieces I was working on for September and there are still a couple of client pieces needing attention. I will try to get more pics of Maelee and Betty along with hopefully a couple of others next.

More to come . . .

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the goggles are going to be added. There is a strap across her hair that likely is the starting point for the goggles.

But, I agree. She's just a touch off.

Still, the model is a great sign that the other models are going to be very well done. I've been on board since the 1st day and I'm excited every day by what is coming out of this KS and new company.

Just to let you know, at any level where you would get a tee-shirt, you can trade that in for a pair of Babes. So, for example, at Casing ($20 pledge) you get a tee... but you can trade that in for 2 Babes (excluding the Maelee the mechanic).

But yes, my understanding is that the only thing so far that is kickstarter exclusive are the geegaws (the ammo dump and other "Bomb Kit Only" extras) and the Mechanic. If you need to wait, you should be able to get everything retail... that's the whole point, after all.

Update #13 is out!

Less than $300 Welcomes Raven Skye!
Update #13 · Sep. 19, 2012 · 2 comments

I know it seemed like a long haul to get to this point but we are now exactly at the halfway mark in the project. I'm not sure how other projects progress but here is a graph from the project dashboard showing how we've done so far. This is very similar to the data generated by Kicktraq.

This show steady growth over the entire course of the project with no lag time. Really amazing progress.
TARGET LOCK PENDING

$60,000 PENDING!!! Aeronautical pilot Raven Skye can take command of your airship fleet. When we reach the goal to unlock Raven she can join your fleet as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward. We will also add a Steampunk Weapon Sprue to every BOMB KIT for absolutely FREE!

Tim is working on the final design for Raven from this initial thumbnail sketch here. We'll be posting that along with some other characters as soon as they roll in!

$65,000+ Takes us along with Matt Dixon's Vixen Pussy Patrol, complete with cat sidekick. When we reach this goal, this hard hitting, heavy armored Babe and her feline scout will be added to the available Babes choices for every level that can select Babes choices as a reward.

In addition to that, we will include our third Bombshell Relic Princess Theja in every BOMB KIT for absolutely FREE! The sculpt won First Place in the GenCon 2006 Sculpted Green category of the Painting Competition. This rare and out-of-production model will only be offered here during this Kickstater drive.

$70,000+ Sets Inquisitor Mira on the trail of righteousness. When we reach the goal to unlock Mira so she can join your parish as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward.

NEWS

THERMITE LEVELS added!
Because our painters are so awesome, we have added 4 more THERMITE slots bringing the total to 10! If you want to get one of your Babes painted up by one of our awesome Bomb Squad Painters just edit your pledge amount and select the THERMITE LEVEL as a reward. You can choose which Babe model you want painted when we send out the backer reward survey after the project concludes.

Reinforcement Add-On Sets
There is a lot of interest growing about the Reinforcements Add-On Sets. The plan at this point is to throw the Reinforcements into the mix after we complete the goal for $80,000. We will be posting a poll during the period before reaching that goal that will allow the backers to vote on the order that our Reinforcements are offered.

Just to give you a taste of the next offering we present the Spirit Walker Luta and her guardian wolf spirit Shunkaha designed by Patrick McEvoy. We have several other Reinforcements Sets that are being designed and they will be posted before the poll for voting goes out to the backers.

All of you have done a tremendous job hanging in there as we have worked to get more designs to you. The comments and suggestions have been great and there has been lots of feedback on the sculpts in progress. We will be posting new stuff again soon!

Onward to the Feline Frolic!

More Babes!

We have added the rest of the art to fill out the remaining slots for available Babes choices at the NAPALM LEVEL! If you have been holding out to upgrade to this level there will now be a Babe available for every slot for the 15 choices for this backer level. These Babes will only be available as choices to every level that gets to choose a Babe as a reward if we make the goals indicated in order to put them into production.

Many thanks go to Cris Delara and Tim Collier for getting these in under the gun. We are very excited to bring Steampunk Medic Victoriana and wuxia heroine Wu Ling Shu to wrap up this segment of releases. There is also a mysterious silhouette posted following the $80K goal. She will be revealed once the poll for the Reinforcements has been sorted out.

You can see larger versions of the character art in our Concept Art Gallery here.

___________________________________________________
Reinforcements Add-On Sets

Development has continued regarding the availability of the Add-On Sets. We have set up a Polldaddy account in order to build the poll to prioritize the offered sets. We will post a link once the poll goes live so that you can vote on which sets you would like to have offered first. This link will be made available on the main page as well as in future updates so everyone will have a chance to participate.

There are three additional sets we are considering adding and the art is currently being generated. As soon as they are in and posted, we will send out the link to the poll to start the voting.

Your support, patience and enthusiasm have been remarkable and I am deeply honored to be able to share this work with all of you. Thanks again for making it all possible.

Yes, this KS is to get this new company off the ground. They will be creating these minis for retail sale in the future; I would imagine as soon as January of next year.

Given that all of these are going to be metal and most are going to include resin add-ons (sidekicks, weapon sprues, or the second model in the upcoming Reinforcement options), I am imagining a minimum cost of $12 per mini. And likely more when they are retail.

The KS isn't the same kind of deal as Dreadball, Bones, or Sedition Wars. But, at $75, you can get (by swapping out the t-shirt) 9 models and their accessories; $8.33 per model, including the LE ones. At $150, its 20 models and accessories ($7.50).

Ahh actually I did not know this yet. To date I haven't read the KS as extensively as I did the Reaper Bones or the Relic Knight KS's. Call it KS burn out, if you will. So far I've been skimming and pointing out the ones I wanted. I don't know if I want a BB tshirt just yet. I don't usually rock billboard tshirts, but it's a case by case thing. Either way, it's good to have the option.

Excellent info. Thanks Lando and Drazz

Thank you all for making Mira and Belphegor a reality. Having designed this particular character myself it is very encouraging to know that you all value the addition of her to our Babes line. It is ironic that we are now at 666 backers to get Inquisitor Mira into the mix!

TARGET ACQUIRED

$70,000 ACHIEVED - THANK YOU!!! This sets Inquisitor Mira on the trail of righteousness. We have reached the goal to unlock Mira so she can join your parish as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward.

By reaching the goal for Mira, we have also add the Belphegor Sidekick to every BOMB KIT for absolutley FREE!

$75,000+ Rings up Steampunk Medic Victoriana to make a house call. When this goal is reached Victoriana will be available as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward.

We have also included a new ADDITIONAL SUPPORT option with the Sidekicks Set 2. You can add on this set of helpful (or harmful) little critters to any backer reward level for an additional pledge amount of only $10.

Amazing progress so far. Many thanks again to all of our ongoing supporters who have increased their pledge amounts to include more options. We also welcome and show gratitude to all of our new backers who have just joined in as new Bombardiers! We appreciate all of you.

More art and some new Work-In-Progress sculpts are on the way.

Finally bit the bullet and backed this project, at the $100 mark. All those pretty sci-fi girls are just too hard to resist!!

I'm sure this has been covered before, but some of the upgrade/add on options that there are, will it be possible as a backer to add these options later after the KS project has completed and when more concrete artwork/WIP details become available?? There's bits and bobs that I think I might like, but I'd like to be sure before I part with my cash, is that cool??

There will probably be a KS pledge manager that will allow for you to add on extra bits after the fact. That is the common method for KS.

The KS manager does not allow you to add extra stuff above your pledge level, I think. Only special 3rd party managers (eg. by Coolminiornot, and soon Reaper) have the option that you can add more stuff and pay via Paypal etc.

based on what Patrick & Vicky have posted in the comments

As far as we can tell you'll only be able to buy extra sidekicks in the packs during the KS (no singles, or multiples of one figure)

However once their webshop is up and running they will be on sale separately

or if they derive from Mat Dixon art by buying more of the babe in question (the licence they have does not allow splitting babe from sidekick)

You're talking about purchasing non-babe figures, correct? The minions, accessories, etc?

Because to my understanding you can elect multiples of the same babe and purchase additional babes at any pledge level for $10 each. The Reinforcements (Bomb Kit level+) and Additional Support categories come as shown, but again, I haven't seen it said that they're limited to X number per customer. With the exception of Maelee, that is.

Betty Sculpt

I spent a good part of today catching up on a lot of things that have been waiting in the wings. Here is the sculpt for Betty. I finally got the rest of the details completed for her. Her feet are pegged to fit the scenic base that is in the works.

I have also put armatures together for Sally, Vivian, Nowada and Mira. There will be updates on their progress next.
NEWS

We have another piece of art for the bonus Babes and work continues on the other two Reinforcements sets which will be posted as soon as the finishing touches are done.
Bombardier Recruitment

If you are members of any miniature related forums or can share on Facebook, please repost this and let them know work is under way and there will be many more updates of the other sculpts in progress.

While I am still working on a few other commissions for clients, the work on the Babes is a priority.

Thanks again for all your help and support! We're over the half-way mark and working towards a big finish.

The "Babes" are available for mix and matching. You can pledge the Napalm level and just get copies of the same one if you like. Certain babe s(those livensed from Matt Dixon) come with sidekicks that can only be obtained with their respective babes (Pussy Patrol, Cave Girl).

Other sidekicks, like Betty's Gremlin, are included in the "Sidekick pack (pack 1 or 2)" with is available as a $10 add-on. Buy as many as you like, but they all come in a pack of five.

You can buy as many of any miniature or sidekick set as you want (except for Maelee), but you cannot purchase individuals sidekicks (if you want, for example, the turtle, you have to get the respective set of sidekicks for $10, you can't buy just the turtle for, say, $2).

It strikes me as being very close to the concept art, frankly.

She is a very slight woman in the concept art. She's certainly less muscular then Maelee, say, and in the existing WIPs that's the case in the sculpts. Note also that the proportion mentioned (head-to-upper body ratio) is actually the same: the distance from her chin to the top of the cap is the same as the belt buckle to her chin, in both art and sculpt.

It may be that one doesn't like her particular aesthetic, of course. She is wearing very high waisted trousers which gives the appearance of an abbreviated torso, she has big hair making the head look large, etc.

Personally I find the sculpt very nice, but if one is inclined to disagree, I doubt my opinion butters many parsnips.

the head looks a tad big and there's lacking definition in the jaw/cheek, however I think it's because the face is shot from a 3/4 profile on an unpainted sculpt. Optical illusion. I think it looks pretty charming all in all.

Take more pics please - show her off a little more.

Yeah, the head is a little big, and the cheeks too long, which completely changes the shape of her face.

The slender is fine, but her right hip looks to be jutting out too far, and the angle of the flare on the hips of her pants is off, which makes it look like her hips are even wider rather than being just a part of her pants.

Detail-wise other than that, she's superb, but the head and the hips make her look awkward.

CLICK HERE TO VOTE IN THE POLL

We have now turned the choices over to you, our loyal backers, to see what would be the most viable goal to reach next. Select the option you would most like to see offered as the next stretch goal. The poll will close at Midnight CDT Friday September 28th, 2012.

After that time, we will look at the poll results and list the goals and rewards offered in the order they are most popular. With so many great concepts available and only a short time remaining until the Babes Kickstarter Project closes, we felt this was the best way to get you the Reinforcements you really wanted.

Larger images of the designs can be found in our Concept Art Gallery.

Agreed. It's gone from great in the concept art, to merely okay. Might be an issue with the "sculpt them with speed" nature of this KS? I'd be happier to see that figure rescultped, as it was my favorite of the concept art.

Betty's face does seem a big large, but the pants are doing exactly what jodhpurs ought to. The high waist was how pants were worn then, fifties pedal-pushers have been all the rage this summer around here and you get used to it. Especially with the lovely sights it allows...

The Stretch Goals are Set!
Update #19 · Sep. 26, 2012 · comment
Thanks for Voting!

After comparing the number of voters with the number of backers we at the Bomb Factory have determined there is enough representation to give a fair assessment for the layout of our next set of stretch goals. This poll, like the Pirate Code, in no way attempted to be scientifically accurate but was merely a guideline to assess our future offerings.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE POLL RESULTS

Thanks again for your support and participation! We are looking forward to bringing you the coolest models we can make!

~Patrick

So the order will be Wu Ling Shu at $80,000, then Geirahod at $85,000, then the next stretch will be the Reinforcement pack of Professor Karrick and Thulle at $95,000, then Delzira at $100,000 and Shunkaha and Luta Reinforcement pack at $110,000 (and so on from there).

While I have to say that I'm pretty interested in the next 4 stretches, I do wish when the voting had been announced it had been made known that Reinforcements would be $10k stretches rather then $5k like the babes. I can see why, but I can't help but think some people might have voted differently had that been announced.

True, but look at the DreamForge KS, it changed its format a few times... and in the end exceeded all expectations. Mine at least.

I'm happy with how this is turning out. I already have all I want from my pledge.

Yeah, he could perhaps have said it again with the voting update; however, this has been pointed out various times during the kickstarter (also for being one reason to first add all the babe choices before reinforcements so goals are not too far apart).

Yep, sorry I overlooked restating that the goals for the Reinforcements would have to be larger. The budget to produce these larger pieces is more considering some of the things we will be implementing to make them - 3D printing, silicon molds and resin casting, etc.

Thanks for hanging in there with us. I'm working on some of the sculpts now and will be getting you some more shots soon. Betty may be getting a facelift as well, but that's down the list.

Wu Ling Shu and Additional Support
Update #20 · Sep. 27, 2012 · 2 comments

It has been an up & down day for sure! But after all the pledge finagling we are still over half way to offering Wu Ling Shu!
TARGET SCANNING

$80,000+ Summons wuxia heroine Wu Ling Shu to fight for family honor. When this goal is reached Wu Ling Shu will be available as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward. Wu Ling Shu needs someone to watch her back, so when she is unlocked, Sidekick Ping will be added to every BOMB KIT absolutely FREE!

______________
NEWS

Additional Support has Arrived!

We've beefed up the Additional Support section with more goodies you can select for the additional pledge amounts. You asked for it, we listened! There are Sidekicks, Relics, Base Inserts and Sprues to choose from that you can add to any backer level.

Again, we want to offer a heartfelt thanks to all the stalwart supporters who have held the line and acquired the targets. We also want to welcome our new backers and thank you for jumping in to help us along. If you have not pledged yet, now is the time! We only have seven more days to reach the next goals and make it possible to add even more Babes selections into the mix as well as some fantastic Reinforcements Sets.

My my my my Mitchel... Some very nice bits and bobs added here. The $5 for 5 resin base inserts seems almost criminally good, and the various accessory sprues a delight as well!

I'm going to steal this image from a post on Frothers Unite![sic] (no doubt from Insaniak's evil twin... or good twin, as the case may be...);

Seeing this, I do have to admit that while Betty is nice now, with a few tweaks she can be amazing.

Wu Ling Shu funds to make way for the Valkyrie

We made Wu Ling Shu a reality! You have all made this possible by spreading the word, digging deep and holding fast! Now that we have filled the slots for the NAPALM LEVEL there is nothing holding us back!
TARGET ACQUIRED

$80,000 ACHIEVED - THANK YOU!!! Wuxia heroine Wu Ling Shu comes to fight for family honor. This goal makes Wu Ling Shu available as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward. Wu Ling Shu also gets someone to watch her back, so Sidekick Ping will join the fight with her and is added to every BOMB KIT absolutely FREE!
TARGET SCANNING

$85,000+ Chooser of the Slain Geirahöd the Valkyrie will swoop to the battlefield as an additional Babes choice at any level that has a Babes choice as a reward. Along with that, when the goal is reached, we will add a Fantasy Weapon Sprue to every BOMB KIT for FREE!

NEWS

The name Geirahöð is connected to the Old Norse words geirr ("spear") and höð ("battle"). It appears in some manuscripts of Grímnismál in place of the valkyrie name Geirölul. I purchased the original drawing for Geirahöð from Wayne Reynolds while at Reaper Con in 2011. After contacting him and requesting to purchase the rights to the art for miniature production he was very agreeable. So we now include her here as the next goal to achieve to make her available as an additional Babe selection.

New Contributor - Wayne Reynolds - Artist

Wayne is a highly popular artist with card art, cover art and interior art for some of the largest publishers in the gaming industry. He is known for dynamic action scenes, detailed character designs and pointy sideburns. Wayne paints exclusively with a traditional process of paint on board rendering some of the most iconic images for games like Magic the Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder.

Hey guys, I updated the first post in order to make it a bit less... ridiculously long. Please let me know if there is anything else that you think should be posted in the first post. I'll still post the most recent updates here in the thread, but putting all of them in the OP seems a little redundant.

Just to remind, right now we're about $1500 from Wayne Renolds' Valkyrie, and the addition of the fantasy weapon sprue to Bomb Kit and the add-on section ($3 to add as many as you like);

He's a freelance sculptor. He only has income when he has sculpts to do. And, he had a few for the Bones kickstarter.

He's definitely a talented sculptor, as we have seen in a number of places. I understand the idea of wanting to see a few, but he's about to go without a paying job for months. And pay for the molds. And lay out the money for the material, and shipping, and everything else.

To me, this is exactly the kind of entrepreneur that needs a Kickstarter. This is going to create a new business, and I'm happy to put my money in that start.

You raise a very legitimate point: more-so then many kickstarters, this is a real start-up, without a finished product to show. I spoke to Patrick about this, and my impression is that he is doing all he can to get some WIPs out, and listen to what people are saying about them (he mentioned a potential change to Betty, for example).

The problem is, of course, he doesn't have the money yet, so he has to work on his commissions at the same time (several times he's pointed out that he's had to do rush jobs for Reaper and Dark Sword, including, no doubt, things like the well received Cloud Giantess and female paladin shown elsewhere).

It's a catch-22: to really attract backers he needs product to show them, but he needs backing to have the support to do the sculpts. Showing very early WIPs similarly can be both good (if they are great), but also bad, because they are in-progress. Showing something too early can be deadly (recall from just this weekend the chorus of "that's what?!" when the picture of the WIP of Wildcard from Dreadball was shown).

For myself, I can understand that and I hold out cautious optimism. This is a project I'm supporting both because I really hope that the end results will be to my liking (and his current works seem to support the aforementioned optimism), but also because it's a project I really want to succeed.

One of the problems with kickstarters seem to be the raised expectations that come from several companies with existing product lines basically coming to the Kickstarter and gathering funds to make a transition, or to make a product that was already going to be made better. That's fine, but it's raising the bar in a way that makes it even harder for the really little guy to get in on the action.

All that said, none of this is going to make someone like a miniature that they simply don't like.

First off - I'm not a "few of these companies" I'm one guy trying to start up a boutique line of my own like Red Box, Hasslefree and Freebooter.

Second - As mentioned before, I have started revisions on the Betty sculpt and will have more pics of her posted when she's done. If I weren't in the middle of finishing some big things for Privateer Press, Dark Sword and Reaper's own Kickstarter in September, I would be further along with the Babes sculpts and would have posted more work sooner.

Third - I can understand reluctance to backing anything sight unseen. I prefer to have as much info about the project I'm backing as possible. However, I gladly backed the Red Box project with only a handful of finished things to show and post after post of concept art because I know Tre and I know his work. I'm certain he will deliver quality minis just like the other ones he put out. I have also backed Tom's Effigy Havoc project for the same reasons. I know him, and I know his work. I expect he will put out something cool.

But I fully expect not everyone will know my work nor anything about me. They don't know that I work through ELEVEN iterations of a model for some of my high profile clients to make it as close to the art as I can get. As a boutique line, and being my own art director there is a lot of leeway I can have as far as making the models as cool as they can be. It's asking a lot for someone to put up money, sight unseen, for products that are not made yet. But that's what crowdfunding is all about. I'm just grateful for the 800+ backers we do have in order to get this started up.

But since it came up again, there are some more progress pics that will be posted in the next update. Bear in mind, they are not finished but it should at least give an idea of where they're going.

Progress pics would be great. Just thought it was worth giving honest feedback. The cloud giantess is what had me interested, but as it's larger I felt it wouldn't be directly comparable.

I prefer the "little guy" kickstarters, as shown by my backing history. But, I like to see a prototype, or 3D render, or a green- not just concept art.

I think it's a legitimate suggestion to finish one sculpt, on your own time or over a long period, etc, before launching a campaign... I made it as a general comment because I wasn't wanting to single you out (you're far from the only one!). Sorry if it came off rude. I really didn't mean it that way, but tone in text is tricky.

But I am very reluctant to back concept art without at least a finished model from the range or two. Useful for future reference, perhaps! And again seeing a few greens would be great.

Also thanks to Buzzsaw for the thorough reply.

The much anticipated WIP update arrives!

Three Days and Some Hours Left!
Update #22

Despite popular opinion I am actually sculpting on the Babes! I removed the larger head for Betty and will work up a replacement. I will also be beefing up her legs a bit for molding.

Nowada has been blocked out with the basic understructure and anatomy. Next she will be getting an initial layer of drapery and armor. I will also begin the weapon next.

Vivian has a glass bead in place of the helmet until that is built in ZBrush and printed. As work progresses on her I will post renders of the helmet. She has a rudimentary layer for the diving suit. More layers will be built up to fill out the bulk of the armored plating. I thickened her waist a bit to facilitate casting. Were it the proportions in the art it would be prone to snapping when pulled from the mold.

This is it! The final week! I know you are as ready to wrap this thing up as we are here at the Bomb Factory! There are still lots of cool things to unlock and add to your rewards. Over the next couple of days we will be adding a couple of new pledge levels and revealing some more Additional Support items. I'm really excited to see the revisions for Betty, and really hopeful that we'll get through to Shalunka at least (damn I want to see that top-hatted werewolf...). One of the best things I've found for fortifying my resolve is checking out the Reaper Catalog (5 pages of sculpts!): Patrick has so many wonderful sculpts in there (but dangerous, as the inclination to start buying kicks up...).
Spoiler:

For example, a Pathfinder mini that caught my eye;

An earlier pirate/swashbuckler;

Past performance no guarantee of future results, etc., etc...

The question the prospect of a revised Betty brings up, of course, is... how do you paint transparent glass?

68 Hours to Go!
Update #23 · Oct. 02, 2012 · comment

Today has been the highest pledge day since September 16th! I have to hand it to the Bombardiers, you guys really got out there and beat the bushes to drum up the pledges. I also want to welcome and offer a sincere thanks to all of our new backers who are starting to jump on board as we count down the final hours of the Kickstarter project.

TARGET SCANNING

Our Next Goal - Less than $4000 to go!
$95,000+ Professor Karrick & Thulle will be available as a Reinforcements Add-On Set for your additional pledge of only $10. Along with that, when the goal is reached, we will add a Sidekick iSlug to every BOMB KIT for FREE!

___________________________________________
PROJECT UPDATE

We have restacked the graphics on the main project page. Hopefully the new Rewards Levels image will make pledging a little easier to understand.

Two new backer levels are added:
$170 PLASMA which includes the BOMB KIT + 15 additional Babes choices (18 Babes total)
$200 NEUTRON which includes the BOMB KIT + 15 additional Babes choices (18 Babes total) + Your choice of any 3 unlocked Reinforcements Sets.

If you pledge $230 and select NEUTRON you will be able to get one of everything offered, if we unlock all the Babes and Reinforcements shown. That would be 18 total Babes and six Reinforcements Sets. This actually saves $10 from the total of the previous NAPALM Level + 6 Reinforcements which totaled $240.

NEW HYDROGEN LEVELS

We increased the number of HYDROGEN Levels to include three new sculpts. If you pledge at the HYDROGEN Level you can get one of the offered sculpts for Meagan, Sally, Sword Maiden, Nowada, Vivian or Tetsu Ko.

If you want to upgrade your HYDROGEN Level with PLASMA to get a sculpt plus 18 Babes plus 3 Reinforcements Sets of your choice, pledge at the $725 amount and select the HYDROGEN sculpt of your choice. After the project closes you can indicate the PLASMA upgrade during the survey.

How about that for an awesome Bombshell Blast?!?

RELIC 4

We have added the fourth Relic - Tallah the Swordmistress to the Additional Support section. You can get as many items as you like from this section for the additional pledge amounts indicated.

NEWS

Most of today has consisted of sculpting and updating the Main Page Graphics™. The itinerary for the next two weeks will be thus.

Tomorrow will be more sculpting with hopefully more pics of the Babes in progress. I still have several outstanding pieces to finish for Neomics, Laughing Monk, Reaper, DGS Games and Antimatter as well as a couple of others. Fortunately the Privateer piece goes out in the mail in the morning.

Thursday is our weekly visit to the Reaper Factory where I will be meeting with some of the other Bomb Squad participants and dropping off at least a sculpt or two. Friday will be spent monitoring the final hours of the Kick project followed by a celebratory gathering at a local pub for some well deserved suds and darts! Saturday the Sculptdude turns 45! So, I'm taking that day off.

Wednesday will be the beginning of Reaper Artist Conference, a week-long conclave of painters and sculptors sharing all the latest tips and tricks we've put together from the previous year. I will be taking all the Babes along with me and while working on some additional Reaper things, will also be posting the first of the Regular Friday Updates™ from the con.

So, I know many of you are probably thinking, "Whew! All this will be finished up Friday." And for many it will be. But it is actually the start of Bombshell Miniatures, because all the work to bring you the best Babes we can really begins!

Anyone know for sure what's happening with the familiars? I had thought they were included with the higher level pledges, but the Bomb Kit only seems to include about half of them?

So if you want them all you have to pledge an additional $10 for five, so you end up with extras of a few?

I'd just hope that Patrick (and the other sculptors) will continue to be open and communicative to feedback from backers when figures are, well, not up to scratch (like Betty). Tre' from RBG clearly is, and has in the past couple of days changed the face of one of his wolves based on feedback.

Some of the familiars were added to Bomb Kit (free) when their respective babe was unlocked,

but others can only be obtained by selecting the respective babe (and you'll get multiples of them if you get multiples of that babe)

The reason for this is that these familiars were included in the concept art for the figure so pledgers would assume that they came with them.

(also note that the ONLY way to get the familiars with the Matt Dixon babes is to buy the babe, Bombshell is unable to sell these as part of the familiars pack due to the licening arrangement for the art)

Patrick has said that individual familiars will be for sale when the Bombshell website is up and running, so if you are after multiples of a single one (flying monkey army?) it may be worth waiting for that

REWARDS

Rewards levels are broken down to include several choice options.

You can include as many Additional Support items as you want at ANY pledge level. Maelee is limited to three per backer.

You need to back at BOMB KIT level to add Reinforcements. BOMB KIT gives you 3 Babes + Maelee + Relics + extras including shirt. You may opt to trade only the shirt for two additional Babes choices indicated in the survey.

When you up your pledge you need to put in the total amount you want to pledge now. A survey will be sent after the project for you to select your rewards options.

International Backers choosing rewards with MORE than 3 Babes and a Postcard Set MUST include $12 additional shipping with their pledge, including Canada.

NEW FAQ

We have had several questions about the availability of pledge rewards in light of achieving the remaining stretch goals. I decided to post that concise info to give all our new backers the info about the final hours of the project.

"What if someone pledges NEUTRON and only 1 or 2 Reinforcements goals are achieved but they don't want to select duplicate rewards?"

It's all about choices. Choose to pledge a certain amount. Choose which rewards you feel are best for the amount you decide to donate.

If you don't want to be stuck with "empty slots" that you would need duplicates to fill, adjust your pledge or backer level by clicking the "Manage Your Pledge" button. You have up until 5pm CDT on Friday to determine if we reach all the goals to get what you want for your rewards. As many have already mentioned in the Comments Section, if you pledge higher now, we may in fact reach all those goals by then . . .

The NEUTRON Level is aimed at newer backers and those who want to be able to select a pledge level without having to calculate how many Babes and Reinforcements to add on. Basically it is likely to be simpler than the PLASMA Level if you want Reinforcements options is likely to be as close to a 'complete collection' option as we can make.

NEWS

Many of you have asked if we will be offering rewards packages for additional support pledges even after the funding of our current Kickstarter project ends.

The short answer is YES!

On Saturday, after the Kickstarter funding period closes Friday night at 5pm CDT, we will set up a specific page to begin accepting additional pledge support through PayPal Donations.

THIS WILL NOT BE A KICKSTARTER PLEDGE MANAGER.

Unfortunately we do not have the resources to hire a dedicated code monkey to custom build a pledge management site like the big companies that funded millions for their projects.

However! We will make the various rewards items available for your continued pledge support throughout our fulfillment period using PayPal Donations. There will be a link at the top of the Bombshell page that will take you to the Continued Progress page where you will be able to add pledge funds and select additional rewards for your support. Look for this little graphic to appear at the top of the main Bombshell Minis site once that is all set up.

Again! Thanks for all your support. We appreciate your continued interest and dedication to making the Bombshell project a success beyond anything we expected or imagined.

Are all of the figures going to be shipped in January 2013 or are they going to be staggered based upon when they were unlocked?

Rocket bike is almost assured. I'm looking at the end goals already announced and the three new silhouettes that popped up after $160.

Is that a possibility?

Since they're only silhouettes at this stage and not concept art, I highly doubt it. I have to scratch my head at the "+$10 add-on" ones being $10k stretch goals while the "regular" babes are $5k goals. - given that we're not in a Reaper or Mantic (or even Mongoose) situaton where tons of extras are being added to a "sweet spot" pledge level, (we're paying at least wholesale for each item, after all).

As in, it's not going to cost $10k to get each of those pairs sculpted, and as they're sold seperately, I don't see why the stretch level is so high. I think it'll hit the werewolf, but getting to the bike is iffy at best, and Cave Girl is also in danger of not coming in.

Also this bit doesn't exactly fill me with a burning desire to "pledge higher now" anyway, and it's obviously having the same effect on others...

The reinforcement babes are two models and the second is on a 50mm base. And you're getting them at $10. That seems like an incredible deal.

Remember, this guy is an stablished sculptor, working for companies like Reaper, but he's trying to start his own line. He's going to pay out of pocket for molds, materials, website and everything. This company is not established and looking to expand, like Reaper or Mantic or SodaPop.

So, yeah, if it costs 5,000 to create molds and buy materials to make 2,000 minis, it makes sense that it will cost MORE than 10,000 to make a pair of them when one of the pair is of a significantly larger size.

I know I'm being defensive, but this is the kind of enterprise that needs to be encouraged on Kickstarter. Mantic and SodaPop and others are just creating pre-sales.

As the deal stands right now, $150 gets you 16 (or 18 with shirt trade-in) babes, 3 (maybe 4 if we get to 125k) more 25 mm girls, art cards for everything, 3 weapons sprues, 7 small sidekicks (more if you select the appropriate Babes), scenic bases for each, and 40mm marker. That's $8.33 per 25mm mini (with the shirt trade in) before you factor in the extras ($1 per base is common).

And $10 add ons? Where are you going to find a $10 50mm werewolf with a tophat?

Wish this ended on Saturday instead of Friday. Feel as though that would generate more pledges from the last minute folk.

Delzira was the last babe on my list. May have to up my pledge for the fancy werewolf, though.

Hopefully, we see the large influx of pledges as we've seen in other KSers. Would be thrilled to have more babes to choose from.

It's the Final Countdooooooooooown!

The Final Day!
Update #25 · Oct. 04, 2012 · 7 comments

This is it. Less than twenty hours to go. It has been a long haul. We started in early August planning the project, designing the concepts and crunching the numbers. Now we only have a few hours to unlock the remaining pieces. I am confident we can get there.

For good measure, Tim sharpened up his drawing pencil and whipped out three massively cool Babes I would be thrilled to share with you. They will be revealed only if we get to the pending Mystery Goals shown in the Babes Choices section!

If we reach the goals these pieces will be available as regular Babes choices, otherwise the pieces will not be in production until late next year. There are some pretty cool things lurking in there.

$120,000+ HS38 Rocket Bike will be available as a Reinforcements Add-On Set for your additional pledge of only $10. Along with that, when the goal is reached, we will add one Sidekick Flakk to every BOMB KIT for FREE!

Spent most of the day at Reaper finishing the Hyrekia sculpt. I also finished up a couple of other things to clear my workbench and make room for all the Babes needing attention.

Tim was kind enough to provide me with the additional details regarding Vivian's diving suit. He worked out some pretty specific things to create the art and the extra views of the equipment are invaluable to help with the sculpting. She will be an awesome figure when finished. I'm really looking forward to working on her some more.

As we are gearing up here at the Bomb Factory to go into Babe production, I wanted to specifically thank all of you making this possible. It is a pretty amazing thing when close to a thousand backers can latch onto an idea and a concept to work together to make something really happen.

Everything is in place to make some truly fantastic models. You should all be very proud, because you are the ones who made it possible!

I'm not sure what you feel comfortable pledging, but I would suggest getting at least the "Bomb Kit" ($75 pledge) level: that's the basic level where you get the freebees like the OOP miniatures and the small size companion animals (the little raptor, the iSlug and so on).

At just that level you get a choice of 3 "Babes" (not the "Reinforcement pairs") and the Kickstarter exclusive mechanic (with sidekick), along with the Pin-up cards and a tee. You can trade in the Tee for 2 more babe selections, for a total of 5 babes + KS exclusive at Bomb Kit.

The lowest level to get All the babes is Napalm ($150), which has a base of 15 Babes, and you can trade in the shirt for a total of 17 Babes. However, it's very likely that funding will bring another Babe to the table, bringing the total selections to 18. Note also that there are no reinforcements included at this level.

To get everything, you can pledge Neutron ($200); 18 babes, shirt, cards, kickstarter exclusives and a choice of 3 Reinforcements (which should cover the likely choices of Luta, Prof and Rocket-Girl).

Who knows, with luck we may need to be adding on even with that level! Hope that helps, but if you have a more specific question Patrick is very good about answering questions both here and in the comments section of the KS.

EDIT; The content of the Bomb Kit pledge level,

See, this is why I'm so confused. The distinction between what's a "Reinforcement" and what's a "Babe" and what's a "Relic". And I don't know if I can buy any of those things separately once the thing goes live or if pledging now is the only way. I signed up for the $150 level, but let's say I wanted to get Rocket Girl too. How do I do that? Do I need to do it today, or can I just buy her once the project goes live? It's not very easy or intuitive to figure out how to get the specific models I want.

The babes are these ones, you get them with 'pick' from your pledge (and can add them singley for $10)

The relics are 4 old figures Patrick sculpted for his Morgan Keith line (and are now out of production). The first three have been added free to Bomb Kit ($75) level and above, and the fourth will be added free if we hit $125K (you can add them singley for $5)

The reinforcements are these, you CANNOT use your pledge level 'picks' for them, you have to add $10 for each pair of figures

Babes are the ones listed in the first graphic. There are 18 of them, almost all available at this point. They are almost always single models, though some have a small sidekick with them. They are the ones you can choose at Bomb and above, or you can buy individual ones for $10.

Relics are the add-ons that are older creations by Patrick Keith. They have no concept art. You get one of each at Bomb level and higher, or can buy additional ones at $5 each.

Reinforcements are the second set of graphics. There are six sets, though only 2 (almost 3) are uncovered and available right now. They come in pairs--a 25mm girl and a 50mm "monster." Each set is an additional $10, no matter your pledge level.

Yes, there will be an after Kickstarter to work out your pledge. But, if you're interested at all, pledge now.

Ah, I see, let me try and explain (probably get something wrong myself!);

-Babes: will all be available after the Kickstarter, albeit I do not know what the price point will be. When you look at the chart, all of the silhouettes are references to the Babes. Babes are the stand alone models on this chart;

As of right now we have 17 models in the Babe category.

-Reinforcements: will all be available after the kickstarter. Again, price point unknown. Reinforcements are either pairs of models, or larger compound models off this chart. Pledge levels do not include Reinforcements, other the the $200 Neutron level. Reinforcements are added to pledges by increasing your pledge by $10 each over your base pledge;

We are rapidly coming up on 3 available selections from this category.

-Relics: the relics are miniatures from Patrick Keith's old, now defunct, studio line. These will not be purchasable later. They are availble 2 ways during the kickstarter:
--First: as a free addition to pledge levels that contain a "Bomb kit",
--Second, as an add-on to any pledge level for $5 each.
Again, it is currently the situation that "Relics" will not be available after the kickstarter.

-Sidekicks (you didn't ask, but doesn't hurt); Sidekicks are small sized models, some are attached to specific models (such as the gremlin and Betty), but most are simply added to Bomb Kit. They can also be purchased as a pack of 5 for $10. They will be available after the kickstarter, but the pricing and method of purchase are not currently known.

So, for example, you wanted 5 Babes, 1 Reinforcement, 2 extra Relics; you would pledge "Bomb Kit" ($75), trade in the shirt and that gets you 5 Babes, you would then add $20 to your pledge, $10 for the Reinforcement and $10 for the 2 Relics, for a total of $95.

You say you've pledged $150 (Napalm level).... same as me,

this will get you 15 Babes in total or 17 if you give up your T-shirt (if you select a babe with a sidekick in the picture for example pussy patrol you get that too)
the KS exclusive Maelee the Mechanic & HLpR
the 3 relic babes
all the sidekicks etc in the Bombkit picture

To get the Rocket Bike too increase your pledge by $10 to $160, leave the level at Napalm

(or if you don't want to spend more cash reduce your level to incendiary ($140) but keep the pledge total at $150..... this would mean only having 12 babe choices or 14 if you give up the t-shirt)

I think it is unfortunate the particular timing of the end of this one. Closing out before the West Coast gets done with work will likely cause a good half of the final adjustments to be missed, another 3 or 4 hours would have probably finished out the revealed stretch goals.

Hopefully the remaining 40 minutes are enough time for the Fire Brigade.

That is a bit odd, considering the company (which is to say, Patrick) is based out of Texas. I have no idea how Kickstarters are scheduled at this degree though, I imagine there is some reason for it.

I was (and am) already down for the $150 deal. That gets me a bunch of figures for slightly more than I'd pay for the same figure if it were produced by Reaper and sold at full RRP. The production costs you quoted sound quite high as well, and the production numbers for each unit seem unrealistically high as well, particuarlly for add-on figures/brand new product. Starting with 2k units of each of these (add-on) figures would be a really, really optimistic move, especially as you state, the retail on them will be more than $10 a unit, I'm not sure where you got those numbers from. It's a moot point now, and the KS did well in the last 24 hours, but I believe they would have made more money if he'd actually kept to the single babes at more-achievable $5k steps. I probably would have upped my pledge if it had more of the regular babes as a possibility, and putting up the specific silhouettes instead of the generic ones was also done a little too late. (concept art would have been even better). Dentry also makes a very good point about ending it on a Saturday rather than Friday as Sean does about end times.

Ah well, it works out successfully, and even better, I won't have to add much afterwards. Congratulations to Patrick. Hope to see him remain posting here on Dakka from time to time despite the KS finishing up.

I agree with Scipio.au, $5,000 just to produce a single 28mm metal model is very high.

I'd recommend checking out the below link, its a post from Kev White's (From Hasslefree miniatures.) Facebook page where he breaks down the actual production costs of producing metal miniatures.
http://www.facebook.com/notes/hasslefree-minis/the-cost-to-production-metal-minis/451699728195643

Anyway congratulations to Patrick on the very successful campaign, im really glad i caved in last night and finally pledged.

The other thing I forgot to mention regarding the $10k stretch goals for add-on figures - the KS doesn't actually supply any of those figures unless people also pay the $10 on top for them. So, it doesn't cost $10k to get 2 figures sculpted and moulds made. These aren't injection-plastic moulds we're talking about, after all. And the $10/per paid by those who want them more than pays for the metal in them.

And thanks, Gusty - I was looking for that post on the FoD earlier to get more specific numbers for my post. Didn't realise it was on FB instead..

Update #28 · Oct. 06, 2012 · comment

We the Bomb Squad want to offer all of you the sincerest appreciation for your support throughout the entire fundraising campaign on Kickstarter.
BOMBS AWAY

The first two segments of our one-year plan have already been accomplished. Thanks to our fantastic Bombardier supporters, we have been able to bring all the ideas to launch a full line of miniatures at once. While the remaining stretch goal was not enough to reach putting a full Reinforcements set into production right away, we were completely blown away at the sheer volume of backers and pledges we received during the final hour of the project.

In light of that final total, as a special thanks to all our Kickstarter supporters, EVERY KICKSTARTER BACKER will receive a special Doctor Helen Salinger Babe for absolutely FREE! That's right, no additional pledging, no add-on, right down to the $1 RACK Level!

Doctor Salinger is named after a strong female character from Pulp Sci-Fi during a period when such characters were rare and far between. Big thanks go to artist Tim Collier who sat and rendered this while I was trying to finish my Pathfinder assignment during last week's trip to the Reaper Factory.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

The PayPal thingy is live.

You can send more money to us and select more Babes. If you pledged on the Kickstarter project, you can add to your pledge total there and indicate additional rewards we can send to you.

Remember, this is NOT a Pledge Manager, an online store, shopping cart, or point of sale.

Your contribution will go towards production costs, setup expenses, overhead, and administration costs for the start up of Bombshell Miniatures. We will be sending you reward items to thank you for your generosity when the production period completes in early 2013.

KICKSTARTER BACKERS will not need to include additional shipping charges if we can verify your Kickstarter pledge and ship it all to the same address with your previous Kickstarter Rewards selections.
THE PLAN

Just like the Cylons, we have a plan. We have already reached the first two segments and are now in the Production Phase. This is where the bulk of the work for the launch project will take place. In the first segment we initiated a soft launch in August by setting up a blog and Facebook page to announce the upcoming fundraising campaign. The second phase was the Kickstarter fundraising itself. In the third phase production will begin where the models are actually made and manufactured. All throughout this phase, I will be posting regular updates and photos as to the progress of the project from sculpting, 3D renders, molding and casting news and anything else I can add to include you all in the process.

The Fulfillment Phase will begin when we start shipping out the rewards packages from both the Kickstarter fundraising and the ongoing PayPal support until we reach the Retail Phase. There will be no "stretch goals" or additions to the existing line during this phase.

In the Retail Phase we will close the fundraising for donations and rewards options and launch our full-featured online web store. All of the non-exclusive models that were funded for production will be available along with a selection of new models we will premier for the web store launch.

During the Retail Phase we will continue to offer new releases on a regular schedule as we wrap up our year-long plan with our premier at GenCon 2013. By that time we should have a large selection of models as well as a special Convention Exclusive figure we will reveal later with other exciting announcements for the following year.

We do not plan to launch a future Kickstarter funding campaign for Bombshell Miniatures at this time.
NEWS

Again, thanks for all your hard work, hard earned dollars, promotion and overwhelming support. I am still amazed at the number of backers and the amount we raised just on my reputation as a sculptor and with Tim & the other artist's designs. I appreciate your confidence in us more than anything else.

The massive work put in over the last two months to get this up and running and the constant monitoring it has required has been taxing. I did not get any actual work done on Friday due to the heavy maintenance the Kickstarter project page required for constant updating.

Special thanks go to Vicky who built all the rewards levels, crunched the numbers and added great incentives to the project. Thanks to Martin, Kevin and Brett for their continued moral and immoral support throughout the pledging period. Of course none of it would have been possible without the fantastic art from all of our great artists especially Tim.

I'm going away for a couple of days but I'll be back reporting to you live from the Reaper Factory during their annual Artist Conference where I will be sculpting on the Babes.

Looking forward to showing you some really cool stuff!
Patrick

It's the figure I wanted most right from the start of the campign,

we saw the silhouette at the end of the KS and I thought I'd have to wait till they funded some new figures for the line,

but no they give her away for free

Pure Genius (I wonder if I need to order a few more...)

Edit: Answer, yes I do assuming she get's added to the list on the Bombshell website!

Edit: Bombshell has said yes, you can add extra Dr Helens for $10 each via paypal donation (Happy, Happy, joy, joy)

Free healthcare!

Very happy with the gratis Doctor Salinger. Has definitely earned them a lot of good will in my book. Thanks, Patrick.

Do we have an idea when the survey will be out? Right now it seems as though that's gonna be the same time as the paypal donations come to a close.

I'm back from my retreat to recover from all this Kickstarter hoohah.

Glad you all like the free Doc. Enough of the goal was made to fund one more model so who am I to quibble?

Our expenses are a bit different from Hasslefree because I'm paying for designs up front and some back-end brushwork. It's a bit of a different model as a start-up with all kinds of overhead factored in to each release. When we hit our stride in a few years, I imagine the Hasslefree model will be very similar to what we'll be operating under.

Survey will go out when as many of the sculpts are ready to go to mold as possible. We will need to send it early enough though to determine the print runs on some things. I'm projecting Nov/Dec for that.

In the meantime, regular updates will go out on Fridays.

Now I need to go pack for the Reaper Artist Conference.

Whoa, whoa... you're delaying the survey so that we can see what the models will look like before we lock in? You're... going to update us regularly?

What sorcery is this?!

Seriously though, bang up job so far, I'm practically salivating to see the new look Betty.

Production Update 1
Update #29 · Oct. 13, 2012 · 2 comments

Fellow Bombardiers, I have been working diligently for the past couple of days to get some work done on the sculpts. This batch is getting close to completion. But first a couple of items to address.
KICKBACK

We will be sending the Kickstarter Survey™ either late in November or early December for you to choose your Kickstarter Rewards. This will be the primary way we will package your items so it will be important to include everything you want the Kickstarter pledge to cover. If you have added items on via PayPal Donate, those will be added to your Kickstarter rewards package.

If you add to your pledge amount via the PayPal Donate page you should be able to indicate what the extra amount is for in the text box on the payment page. Also include your Kickstarter screen name so we can match up what you will be getting.
WORKBENCH

As promised here are the shots of the stuff in progress. Betty has an all new face. I also increased the thickness of the legs from front-to-back in order to compensate a bit for mold compression. I don't have access to my regular lighting rig and will get better pics of these once I get back to the studio.

Tim has been sitting next to me at the conference and has expressed that he's very pleased with how she looks in person.

Maelee has a new hairstyle.

Vivian gets a bit of diving suit gear, hat and hair.

Nowada gets a bit of costuming and an axe.

Bomb Squad contributors Martin Jones (L) and Kevin Williams (R) are working on leveling up at the Reaper Artist Conference!

Top sculptors (L - R) Jason Wiebe, Gene Van Horne, Bobby Jackson, Julie Guthrie, and Bob Ridolfi are also in attendance lending their expertise.

More work is on its way including Sally and a few critters. Will post more soon!

~Patrick

Quote a behind the scenes here, some famous faces, and a glimpse of Julie Guthrie's hands! Things are coming along swimmingly it seems, excellent, excellent...

Love the smirk on Maelee. Also, surprised that I like Nowada more as a model than I did a sketch.

So what you're saying is, in your book: No hair, rail thin arms and hips large enough to start a dynasty are a good thing.

Just kidding. She looks very realistically proportioned. Which is refreshing. A real woman with curves, and a huge ax to boot.

Production Update 2
Update #30 · Oct. 19, 2012 · 6 comments

Let's get right to it. I have made some progress on Nowada and finished the main sculpting on Sally.

I generally sculpt directly over a wire armature and build up the material in layers. Bombshell Miniatures officially endorses Kraftmark's Procreate as the preferred sculpting material of choice. Sally has just about everything finished except the hands and rocket pack. Her gear will be created and printed from ZBrush. These items will also be available as part of the Sci-Fi equipment sprue.

The ring on Sally's collar may need to be extended a bit. Once the vaccuform table comes in and I can get some test casts of her helmet this will give me a better idea of how the parts will fit together.
NEWS

For those asking, if you would like to get art directly from Matt Dixon, you can head on over to his web shop and get it directly from him. He has a set of Dixon's Vixens cards available with many of the Babes we licensed for miniatures.

Things are starting to roll forward at a good clip. All of the bussiness nonsense is now completed, registering the name and setting up our new bank account along with tax allocations. I have upgraded a little bit of hardware and software here and ZBrush is up and running. I still have a good selection of print vendors to test the files once I get some printable pieces to send.

Over the next week, in addition to sculpting more Babes, I will also begin on the base inserts so we can start on the initial molds for those. There are a few sidekicks waiting for attention too.

See you next Friday!

~Patrick

Production Update 3
Update #31 · Oct. 26, 2012 · comment

There are lots of "behind-the-scenes" activities going on here at the Bombshell Factory. Most of this has involved setting up some stuff in QuickBooks in order to track things like income and outgoings. In order for me to be productive, this kind of organization is key so that things are lined up and not subject to be a distraction while sculpting.

We finalized the payment for some of the artist this week and did a little contract signing for the Dixon license. I got some color comps in from Keri for Meagan & Dusty and they look great. I'll post the final paintings once they are approved. Painting has started on some of the other characters as well and I'll update you on the progress as soon as I hear back on them.

In addition to finishing up some other over-due client work to ship out, I was able to put together a few more armatures and start filling out the anatomy for the Sword Maiden.

I've also created the blanks for our resin base inserts. The 50mm insert is still a bit rough around the edges, but the 40mm and 30mm are fitting in just fine. These pieces will be molded and cast in resin. These resin blanks will be used to model the actual scenic base inserts which in turn will get their own molds for production casting. I have it on good authority that we may have found a local supplier for plastic gaming bases in these sizes and will be able to offer them with the Babes. I'll post more on that as it develops around the end of the year.

Bombshell Digital is almost operational. The delay has been getting the correct HDMI cables for the monitors and an AirPort card in order to move the existing system to a more accessible area. In the interim I have some great resources to reduce the learning curve as much as possible. As an existing sculptor with experience in other 3D software along with being a Photoshop "power-user" I expect the curve not to be as steep as it could be otherwise. Really looking forward to posting some renders for you all.

Checking in with Kevin this week, he has armatures put together for the iSlug Sidekick and the Thulle piece that goes along with Professor Karrick. As soon as there is some anatomy blocked out on them I'll try to post an update pic.

That's all for this installment. Next week I hope to have a larger selection of pics of the sculpts for you. Hang in there.

New Update time

Sculpting is coming along. Nowada is almost finished and the anatomy on the Sword Maiden is blocked out.

Several new armatures are posed and ready to go on the next batch of Babes.

Kevin also completed the iSlug Sidekick.

I have been noodling with ZBrush and go the basic structure of Maelee's wrench blocked out.

NEWS

The next round of sculpts will need to be completed as soon as possible to get our first batch off to the master mold maker. As you can see from the mold layout there is space for several more Babes and quite a few Sidekicks. The plan is to get this mold pressed before the end of the month.

More stuff next Friday. Lots of new things on the schedule for this week.

Patrick

And, the Friday update!

Production Update 5
Update #33 · Nov. 09, 2012 · 4 comments

We got some preliminary color roughs in from Keri and the final painting on Professor Karrick and Thulle from Patrick McEvoy.

Other progress is coming along for making things.

The girls are all lined up and ready for me to give them some putty lovin' this month. I also need to finish out a whole batch of accessories that will need to mastered as well.

The first batch of digital files are just about ready to go for a test print. The base inserts should be ready to go to mold this coming week. I added some client tabs on there too just to cut down on the repetitive work a bit.

The Experiment

Sally's helmet has been in my head for couple of years now. I know Naismith did some big helmets for the Cobalt-1 figures several years ago and I think the idea is sound. I have wanted a space girl figure with a bubble helmet since the first Chronoscope pieces I sculpted for Reaper.

I laid out some of the basic shape profiles in order to create a mold for the vacuform. The various proposed shapes will lend themselves not only to helmets but also other pulp sci-fi designs like robots and brain tanks!

So, the vacuformer arrived along with some clear plastic stock and over the next few weeks I'll be making a few test forms for the helmet shapes. I don't even know if it will work yet, but the theory is sound.

Thanks for hanging in there. More next week!
Patrick

I'm probably missing something super obvious, but where are the costs for extras (bases, sidekicks, relics, sprues) listed? I know I set aside some money for those, but can't seem to find the costs now. Someone point it out, so I can get to feeling embarrassed.

What an amazing job. All of those look great. And such quick turnaround, too. I feel like you've outdone yourself, Patrick.

I'll have to finish out my collection when these get up on your webstore.

I have to feel like the feedback from the Kickstarter community helped a few of these models along, too. It's sort of like how an editor can make a story that much better.
