Sup nerds... we are rapidly entering the domain of the second best of all Holidays - Halloween. It's no Bear Day, but no one is pretending that it is. What plans for parties and/or costumes y'all got going on? I've sunk about $300- 400 into my Night's Watch costume - for which I will eventually include pics. A large part of my strategery is to steal a blade or two from my renaissance fair going parents, and thus defray the costs considerably. Since this year Halloween is on Woden's Tag, I figure I will get at least 3 parties out of the deal. Should be "super dope" as the kids are saying these days.
I've got a party on the saturday before halloween,
As for costume, I've been told I'm not allowed to go as my own evil twin...
again...
I was thinking of going as slenderman, but then I realised:
I am in no way slender enough to pull it off If I wore a slenderman outfit, I'd just be a fat guy in a suit with a stocking over his head.
I would dress up, but I'm poor, and I had to toss all my bat-gak-crazy clothes for personal reasons. I was hoping to find a surgeon's gown and pour fake blood ALL over it, and maybe carry around a handsaw.
Even better. Do that, but put on clown makeup and be the character from Children's Hospital
See, we have the Zombie Pub Crawl
http://zombiepubcrawl.com/2012/ to take care of my blood n' guts type Halloween fever, leaving actual Halloween set aside for cool dress up...ing.
I want to get a few of my friends together and go to parties as the Court of Owls from the recent Batman comics. We'll dress in Edwardian era suits, put some dust on them and otherwise fatigue them and wear the owl masks. I anticipate it being quite creepy.
Damn I haven't done Halloween in forever. My family stopped celebrating as my sister and I got older and stopped trick or treating. Should at least go down to the Giant and buy a candy grab bag
Last year my fiance(however you spell it) was visiting her friend, so I spent the night alone playing minecraft and watching monsters vs aliens.
I had 2 sets of trick or treaters all night. Due to the fact that the local council has banned the practice, due to the tendency of cretinous urchins of nefarious backgrounds to resort to rather 'extreme' tricks, such as turning off people's electricity at the meter box if they don't answer the door (this happened to work colleauge, who was not at home and came back that night to find his freezer had completely defrosted), or put fireworks through letterboxes or other such dastardly deeds that no longer class as harmless japes and are bordering on criminal damage.
Needless to say the net result benefitted me, as I had various sweeties in my packed lunch for at least a fortnight afterwards ^_^.
Anyway, I've decided on a costume, I'm going to go as no-face from Spirited Away, partly because it's well recognised, partly because it is actually quite creepy, and partly because it's one of the only costumes that doesn't lose it's effectiveness when you have a beer gut (although, truth be told, it's more of a cake-and-coffee gut, but the principle is essentially the same).

Genghis Connie is going as Psycho Killer Raggedy Ann. The Boy is going as Shirtless Teenage Boy.
TBone has decided to grace us with his rendition of Cuban dictator replete with tiny hat and cigar. Rodney is not in costume as he will be busy biting boys. Rusty will attempt to lick everyone.
I've already bought six bags of candy - the good stuff baby.
Ah, my favorite of all holidays.
As my OTJ time has reached ridiculous levels, I'm not entirely sure just how I'll be celebrating this year, but of course here at casa del Fitzz we take Halloween very seriously...so it's bound to be good times.
Pirate, since I didn't get to dress up properly for ITLAPD due to illness.
I might do another costume for a party or something if someone announces a theme. But I'll be wandering around in a poet's blouse, breaches, knee high boots and a giant hat for most of the normal day.
Edit:
and of course now that I'm an adult I don't get to trick or treat any more... so I just buy the good stuff on sale the day after.
Ive sunk a ton of cash on my Jack Sparrow costume (pics when I finally get my package containing the last of my wig dangles)
Im also planning on wearing different costumes to all the parties around here, so I also have Rorschach from the watchmen, and Rooster Cogburn from True Grit (new version).
All my costumes are homemade, or contain homemade parts (I made my own leather eye patch for RC, and leather palm glove for JS, as well as sewing the wrist wraps, and making the wig, etc)
So my costume is about 75% done. I tried taking pictures, but snag #1 - black on black on black is tricky to shoot at night, with the crappy lights in my apartment. I got a shot or two I liked, then hit snag #2 - where the hell did my camera cord go? I'll look for it tomorrow after work. And by the way, the chainmail shirt is tough to get on, but getting it off is a stone biatch. Finally figured out that if I bend over far enough it's own weight will pull it off.
Remaining tasks
Get sword
Get belt for sword
Explore the feasibility/ necessity of attaching (faux)fur to the cloak
Get thinner leather gloves.
Make the rest of this whiskey disappear
I was origionaly planning on wearing only some (tight) leather trunks and covering myself in a substance my friend has developed that allows you to set yourself on fire without getting burned and will stay lit for hours. However he is going away so i wont be able to. My new plan is to go as a kind of fantasy infantry man-complete with glaive/guiarme/war bill.
I'm going as Tom Cruise from the last samurai. In other words, I'm going to wear a Yukata with a Hakama. I'll probably have to wear my kendogi under the yukata, because it's cold.
This movie is seriously great, especially if you're interested in how Japanese people dressed up until the 20th century. They wore some fantastically decorative and exotic things. Look at what tom cruise is wearing. A purple blouse (which is a very expensive color to dye) and a finely dyed hakama, with an intricate pattern. These sort of things would cost thousands of dollars today.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Still on the fence about putting some fur around the shoulders... It's already going to be pretty hot though. And it might get warm, too.

I just look for costume contests and then arbitrarily pull out a costume from the closet. Selections include:
Destro (from GI Joe)
Henchman 24 (from Venture Bros)
Taskmaster (from Marvel comics)
Vlad (from Hack/Slash)

You could wear the tux and go as Tom Cruise from the Last Samurai wrap party.
I think I'll save the tuxedo for some other occasion. Quite frankly, I don't think it'll fit me when I get out of boot camp, so I might just wear it around town.. go shopping in it, loiter, things like that.

Here's what I'd do: I'd use some PVC pipe and ahiking backback to create a makeshift jet pack and go as James Bond.
That's actually a real thing! I saw a show on the Military channel about it! They had one later on that they could strap rockets onto . The army wanted them, but decided against it because of the Huey, I think. Great idea! Sean Connery is the best, forever and ever.
Last time I did anything for Hallowe'en, I went as a quest giving NPC from an MMORPG. Basic peasant get up with a big yellow exclamation point over my head. Sadly, only two people at the party "got it" and I had to explain it to everyone else.
What I'd like to do is a two face costume, but I think it's pretty likely I'll be too busy to do anything cool.
I went as Twoface for a party on Friday. Looked pretty good, better than when I did Twoface a few years ago. But I won't be doing it anymore, the makeup is just a pain in the ass, especially since if my shoulder so much as brushes against my face, I get a bunch of makeup on my suit, which really sucks to get off.
I'll start celebrating it when you chaps start celebrating Guy Fawkes' Night.
We do? Or at least where I am we have usually have something, it's not as big as the ones in England obcviously but we do set off fireworks and have bonfires. Then again, I live near London ON.

I actually had to look it up, I thought everyone was lighting bonfires in SUPPORT of the treason and saying they were rather upset the House of Lords didn't become a smoking hole in the deck.
Instead I find something about commemorating the English state and how evil Catholics are.

Maybe I shoudl make a Plog about it?
Is this that rare Star Wars model that no one has any info about? I swear I've seen this before.
Jeez, I've still got one of those from Kenner in the 70s - in one of my boxes of old toys awaiting cannibalising into useful stuff - it was referred to as "power droid" on its card.
Yes, it's out of it's blister. Yes, it's missing a foot (dog chewed), no, I don't care.

Sounds like a real party?
Ha, same. I was about to light up a bonfire myself, but then I was like, "A holiday commemorating the suppression of a rebellion, not the success of one? That's no fun." I think that they're just trying to compensate for losing the big one.
And here I thought we were celebrating fire and toffee apples.
To put it more in context, it was originally more of a celebration of the fact that England rebelled from the Pope and stayed rebelled from him, stopping those that would have put England back under Catholic rule, given the chance.
Also, it's about stopping terrorism. I thought you Yanks were all about stopping terrorism!

Sadly, the dive bar that I went to last year had their halloween costume night this past Saturday and I already had plans with my GF.
Last year the theme was super heros (I was recently single at the time). LOTS of chicks in slutty Wonderwoman and Super Girl type outfits. Poison Ivy made my pants tight, but she brought her girlfriend...
I wore my Captain Kirk outfit and met Nurse Julie. That was a fun month...

When it's directed at the British Crown we can't exactly talk too much trash now can we? Be a wee dram hypocritical.
Edit: Further I will fully endorse toffee apples and fire, that's a fantastic combo with lots of booze

Surely you could call him out for doing it all sneaky like? When you guys commit dastardly treason you do it all open in the sunshine, with brightly coloured flags and so on. The gentleman's way.

Actually I seem to recall British generals being rather upset at us upstart colonists for NOT fighting that way, mostly cause we'd lose. Snipers targeting officers, guerrilla warfare..., in fact my Infinity unit is named for one of the fathers of modern guerrilla warfare, an American Brigadier General by the name of Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox". The Revolution was really the start of a major shift in warfare because a bunch of lads figured out that wearing bright colors and standing in bawkes was a really good way to shorten one's life expectancy...
Of course the massive use of lightsabers by both sides I think rules out any historical accusation of not behaving by the honorable standards of warfare.

Sure, that's what won it for you, but you started off with the box-of-brightly-coloured-men tactic. No-one could begrudge you a little improvisation (except aforementioned British generals). Fawkes went straight in for sneaking. Roguish behaviour if ever I saw it.

The first major engagement of the war consisted of militia men running and gunning against advancing British flesh boxes (no where NEAR as effective as metal bawkes) IIRC, and we ended up doing a mix of tactics through out the war because some people thought we had to challenge the British army on it's own terms. but yes there's a clear difference between putting a musket round between a british officer's eyes and burying what was to be a rather large bomb underneath the House of Lords, you usually end up with dead nobility either way, but the former's much more "fair" (not to the dead officer of course) especially given a smooth bore musket had a range that wasn't much more then half a football field in the hands of a competent marksman, which explains why said bawkes were so popular, it takes one's shooting and killing of the enemy from the "individual skill" category and hands it over to the law of averages.
Alright, it's that time of year again. Despite the government shutdown torpedoing my partying budget I had already lined up my costume. I'm still going ahead with the festivities, but will now be moving to a more flask-centric plan of action. Here's a teaser of my costume for the year.
Halloween isn't widely "celebrated" in Australia, at least not in my part of town anway. A few of the neighbourhood kids come round looking for lollies but they always leave disapointed.
But me and my friends tend to use it as an excuse to watch horror movie marathons and get drunk. So yeah. It's got that going for it.
We had trick or treaters last year - they were about 17, knocked on my door on the 14th with one mask between them. No other attempt at a costume was made...
If you want sweets, I want to see some effort in the costume

Yeah, trick or treating has definitely fallen off around here. It's much more of a grown up holiday these days. And as much as I do enjoy the "sexy ______" style of costuming for women, I really do appreciate someone who puts some effort in.
I planned on going as The Todd from Scrubs...but that means I'll have to shave off my mutton chops...so, I'm quite hesistant. Still looking around for ideas.
My girlfriend is going as Yo-landi Visser from Die Antwoord.
As for parties, there are two me and the lady have been invited to, but nothing too crazy. Don't want to get into trouble by the fuzz!

Shaving the ol' facial hair is quite the barrier, I've had a fairly good Goblin King (Labyrinth) costume that I've been unwilling to commit to because of the shaving factor. Plus I owe it to all of my female friends to go in drag one of these years just to show 'em. Instead I go as beardly things to save the trouble.
Oh man I got to say this is my favorite holiday, I'm making three costumes for me and my friends.
I'm going to be a werewolf based on the concept from MtG's Innistrad:
my first friend is going to be going as a naga based on this fan art of the Aladdin TV series:
and my other friend wants to try out a bodysuit for her osciilot costume for LARPing and I figured that the Halloween party we're all going to would be a good chance to try it out without having to worry about having to fight. her costume is based on this art:
I'll see if I can take some more time out of working on them to actually take pictures of some WIP to show you.
wow there's actually a person who is the exact combination of shameless, lazy and stupid to do that? and I thought my dorm was rowdy.
anyways I said I'd show some work on the costumes I'm making and here they are:
here's the stilts I'm wearing for my werewolf costume, because a 5' 5" werewolf is not that scary.
and here's the bodysuit in the process of being covered with fur. the green stuff is upholstery foam that I use for a lot of my fabrication.
and here you can see the gloves where I glued part of my thumb to the palm to give the appearance of a dewclaw.
and here's my WIP mask that I made out of isolation foam and latex. to me the face looks too cute right now, so I'm going to really gnarly it up to add to the scare factor when it's done. I'll also be adding a fur cowl to the sides and back to blend the mask into the bodysuit.
and here's the beginnings of my friend's ocelot costume. basically until she gets some time to come over so I can get measurements on her head that's pretty much all I can do for her costume right now. the urithane foam I'm using for it sucks up latex like a sponge until you build up a skin on it, so I used what was left over after coating the mask to build up that skin so I would have enough that was the golden yellow color her main costume is going to be to coat her entire bodysuit. also I am very much aware that my dorm room is an absolute mess right now, but I never understood why some people insist on cleaning up before a project is finished. unless it's getting in the way there's no reason to waste time cleaning the same area that's just going to get dirty again as soon as you start up on the project again.
no progress on the Naga costume, I'm still waiting on that friend's measurements so I can make the cobra hood and tail.
Hey sorry to double post, but this thread is a small pinprick of light in this dark forum that seems to be preoccupied with the government shutdown and yelling at each other, and for that I think it deserves a bump.
anyways I've gotten some work done on my friend's naga costume now that I've got her measurements:
here's her cobra hood and part of her tail. basically it's Urethane foam with the hood being glued to the back of her bodysuit. to hide the zipper the insides of the hood will be beveled to create a cavity around the zipper that someone can reach their hand into and zip her in and out.
and here's the rest of the tail as it stands. you can see there's a part where the tail splits to let her feet out while she walks, and then when she sits down there will be a pair of stirrups in the bottom of the tail that she can slip her feet into and pull the tail closed, sealing it with industrial strength Velcro to give the appearance that she was actually slithering on a tail.
that's all I've got for now, but I'm going to be working on this latter today so expect more updates soon.
Couldn't find the thread from this year, so in the spirit of the season, a little bit of threadomancy.
I have all week off, going to parties Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Haunted house type deal on Sunday.
Having fallen out of love with A Song of Ice and Fire my Night's Watch costume has been rebuilt into a Knight Hospitaller.
I may need to think of a costume that isn't black on black on black at some point. Doesn't photograph great.
Anyways, anyone else have anything cool they are working on?

Probably wouldn't be "too" expensive to switch that black cloth for white, and go as a Knight Templar instead
Me?? I'm going as me... I may throw on some of my rugby stuff to escort my Minion and "Frozen" Princess kids trick or treating, just so I can claim I'm wearing something costumey

Probably a smart move... wouldn't want to be mistaken for a Klansman, even if it is costume day
