Welcome to Dakka mate!

I've been following your thread on the Infinity forum and it's been a great inspiration in getting my own scenery up together!

I was going to ask where that sweet hex tiled board came from, clicked on your link and read:

Made from corkscrew boards bought at the dolllar store. Once hardened with wood glue and painted the board be at par with the MAS Buildings - I think ?

Now that is some dedication!

Nice board indeed!

How did you do those planters? I've been meaning to do some of my own, and those look simple enough that I might be able to get myself to do them

Wow some great terrain going on here. One thing I noticed is when you play Infinity your love and appreciation for terrain goes up as well.

I found that with Infinity my appreciation for the movement phase has gone through the roof, when I played 40K it was all about the shooting phase, but with all the terrain movement is king now all in all it's much more interesting than just shuffling a gunline of space marines around and doing very little.

True that and then some. As our local Infinity club gains momentum this autumn, it seems like making good terrain is gaining priority fast. Playing on regular old gamestore terrain just won't cut it, because so many of the game's most interesting rules really shine on intricately-modeled boards.

Back on the original topic: Marc, batreps are a lot easier when you have a third person hanging around watching and taking notes (and pictures!). It's pretty engaging actually, and almost as fun as playing. Plus, the observer inevitably gets to make the call on sticky rules issues

I love the planters. The cork actually looks like a marble pattern.

The plastic plants inside though looks like they could be hit with some paint or matt sealer or something. I guess you could say the "look" plastic is the only thing I can come up with.

So finally made my choice for the buildings.
Army Painter desert brown as base coat, Troll Slayer Orange Gw, Elysian Green GW.
Fits in nicely with my Yu Jing army.

Comm tower made with a Brita Filter, fire alarm bit and Pegasus games bits. Crates are from MAS and Antenocities.

The base boards are made with masonite, steel ruler and an Xacto knife to make the grooves. (Never cut towards yourself, always cut away from your hand and fingers!)

Comm tower:

I love the MAS District product line. Use your imagination and presto you have a unique building !

Tx.. District-5 appartements, guard tower and catwalks are a great system that allows for a lot of permutations with the right scratch built add-ons.

Next project : The radar station with Crow Nest walkways on the roof.

Tx guys !

So the breakdown goes like this :
- The «energy fence» is made from bits of the Pegasus Games power plant.
- Crates are from Antenocities Workshop.
- The containers are from an old out of print game called AT-43.
- Sidewalk made with regular masonite.

I have a 4 day weekend coming up. I'm hoping to finish another building.
Stay tuned.

A Sunday at Marc C's

I had the pleasure of having Greg & Amanda travel to the Far East of the island of the Montreal to try out my WIP table :

GAME #1 : The Japanese mutineers had the «insolence» of attacking the Imperial Service base. The rebel movement has gained a new champion in the name of O-Yoroi Kidobutai (TAG et lieutenant). Having faced TAGs before the IS preferred to decimate his support base instead of attack him directly. On the right flank a Celestial Guard with Spitfire was able to move and kill 3 Keisotsu Butai.

Wu Ming HMG moved laid out suppressive fire to bottle neck the TAG. The Japanese assault was stalled. O-Yoroi hesitated too long and never did come out of his deployment zone...

At the end of the conflict Hsien sent his Tactbot HMG on the left flank to attack head on the TAG. Having cover and mimetism the odds were reasonable. The gamble paid off. The TAG took 3 wounds and was disabled.

5-3 Win for the Imperial service. The Japanese star of the day was Oniwaban. Who crawled on a sky ramp, jumped down to a balcon, opened a door, charged a unsuspecting CG Hacker, survived the combi rifle shot and then cut the head off the poor women...

GAME #2 : (Against Amanda) Scavengers arrived at the IS base only minutes after the defeat of the Japanese. Nomads wanted to scavenge the pieces of both sides.

Unfortunately for them Hsien was still in battle mode when they arrived. The IS troops regrouped rapidly and prepared for the worst.

The IS stars of the game were the Kunag Shi link team who crossed the board on the left flank opening the force fields around the power generator of the station. On the other side a Reverend Moiras was waiting for them. Two chain rifle template auto-hits did the job. The Nomads had lost the lieutenant and retreated.

The Nomads lost honourably 3 to 5. Its wasn’t until turn 3 that the battle was decided. Before that Amanda had the advantage 3-2.

I will certainly try to but my memory is not so good when it comes to retell the play by play actions.

[Terrain] Military Base - Yu Jing @ 2013/08/27 18:07:24

Post by: Pacific

I've heard a good way is to take very quick snaps and notes throughout the game for the notable actions, then go back later and set up in roughly the same positions with some proper lighting and a good macro-capable lense.

Think your terrain definitely deserves to be shown off as much as possible!

Prep work for the power core of the base:

I don't know if anyone has thought of this: 10 MAS Interior Walls kits glued into 6x6 rooms and then based on a 8x8 masonite sidewalks will result in a lot of table coverage for only 100$. Add to that paper containers, crates and model cars and you have a really cheap modular table.

Tx again, I wanted the power core to stand out from the other buildings. I think the color shame gives it an air of «quiet power». Something you don't want to mess with...

Those are the caps of an injector pen to control a chronic disease my wife suffers from.
She gave them to me before I asked. She knows her man...

But I guess you can achieve a similar effect with lips balms.

Clever use of what's available! The dark colours are indeed very ominous, I'd be wary of wandering around inside. The vehicles are a nice addition to the table by the way, what scale are they?

An helipad.
I designed several variations in the last months but none where satisfactory.
Finally managed to find the right set up today:

Nothing is glued and the painting is only half done... AND it needs railing cover otherwise no one will venture there !

Very nice, you should try and get a helicopter or something more sci-fi to put up there. It could even replace the barrier terrain if that's bothering you.

Yes I NEEEED a sci-fi something up there.

This is what I will do for cover on the railing.

So this morning will moving my buildings around I realized I only need 9 buildings not 10. The landing pad is so large it covers a lot of ground. This means I'm only 3 building away from finishing the table instead of 4 ! And it leaves my with 2 extra buildings - to be made at a later date - for variation.

Here is one of the possible set ups with description :

THE BASE
(from left to right - starting from the top)

First row
Communication tower (2nd floor) and guard barracks (1st floor)
Radar center (2nd floor) and engineering (1st floor)
Container depot (with monofilament fence)

Second row
Hospital with gardens (WIP)
Landing pad and cargo storage area underneath (WIP)
Guard barracks (2nd floor) and munitions depot (first floor) (WIP)

Third Row
Power Core
HQ (1st floor) and officiers quartera (2nd floor) (WIP)
Mess hall (1st floor) and barracks.

Tx !
Can't wait to play a game on it. Maybe next sunday.

I hesitated for the longest time about assembling the MAS buildings I had bought. Something was missing but I wasn't sure exactly what it was. Its not that the kits are bad on the contrary they are beautiful BUT they are not cinematic. And Infinity is a cinematic game. You want to crawl, run up stairs, jump down on balconies, etc. When I finally understood that, it gave me a solid «design intention». Its what counts the most when you do a project like this. So the end result is that I transformed each kit I had to make them as cinematic as possible.

This is only the first step of the process.
When I'm done with all the basic colouring I will revisit each building with an airbrush (hoping to get it a christmas) and add oriental (Yu Jing) touches.

[Terrain] Military Base - Yu Jing @ 2013/09/08 14:07:47

Post by: Casey's Law

That's a really, really good point! I never thought of it before but you could come up with some awesome terrain if you put yourself in their shoes and think cinematic. If you have any more insight on that you should post it in the Terrain thread, I think folk would be interested to hear your views on the subject.

Railing cover :

The landing pad will be enclosed by a laser fence:

Sometimes gak happens...

I wanted to add a laser fence around the landing pad. Seems I miscalculated the size of the masonite board by an inch. Everything is glued and I didn't want to risk damaging the mdf parts by removing them. NO idea what to do.

This morning I was priming bases when it HIT me! Here is the solution to fix my mistake :

Nice. I think stuff like this is just as important as the buildings on a table to still provide some LOS blocking cover in those 'open spaces' that always seem to appear once you've placed the buildings. Can turn what would be a death trap into a usable part of the board.

That raises a good point, might need to poke Antenociti to see when their sci-fi vehicle Kickstarter is going to get underway..

Those crated areas are a great idea by the way! Stacking them like that I think can work (and looks) better than just having them randomly scattered I think..

I use Army Painter Color Primers. In this case the colour is called desert yellow. It takes 2 coats. MDF drinks a lot. Specifically the edges.
(Don't use white/black primer unless this is part of your color scheme.)

@Grimdork : Tx ! I did try to make each piece of terrain as cinematic as possible. Very soon I will get to try the finished table.

Will do.

Today we have our monthly Infinity meet up.
I'll try to recruit a player with a full paint army for the first game on my table.

Added the railing covers. Almost done. Only need to do the laser fence around the landing pad.

The table is looking great man ; looks like you'll get a lot of mileage out of it.

The outer edges look to be a bloody no mans land. Few crate/barrel stacks would solve that, or fighters can just wisely avoid such open fire lanes.

Definitely a kills board.

You are correct.
I have a series of vehicles (trucks, bulldozers, vans) to block long lines LOF and edges.
I don't put them in the pictures because they are cheap looking and not at the same level as the buildings !
Looks like Antenocities will receive a huge order from me in the coming months...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I dropped the laser fence idea... Instead I used MAS balcony floors that I won't use to create the fence.

That's the end of PHASE 1 my friends !!!

Phase 2 consisted of buying an airbrush, learning how to paint with it and then create highlights and shadows on the buildings.

That's all folks ! (for now)

Fence looks good. I understand about the vehicles, good to know you were thinking about it The AW vehicles are pretty amazing too, whether you go with the military or civilian packs. I've seen some pretty awesome stuff recently but I dunno if it was already out or just a 'coming soon' kind of thing.

A large batch of AW stuff and this will be one of the best tables (in general) that I've seen Not that it isn't pretty damn awesome at present.

Looking good! I do enjoy watching your board come together! It is very inspiring and I really like the Hex-board. I like it so much I'm going to be using it as side-walks/concrete slabs when I make my own Infinity board.

I'm waiting for my Yu Jing JSA starter pack to get in so i can start working on some models.

Ahh yeah vehicles really fill it out. Good luck in your game, I suspect much fun will be had regardless of victory.

It should. We are playing the Lifeblood ITS mission. I love the random dispersion crate rule.

I still have yet to play any Infinity, although I do have enough models waiting to be built that I could. That one sounds fun though, and reminds me just a little bit of all of the weapon crates and care packages being sky-dropped in to the battlefield
