March 9th 2012, Army at the 2k point (now past the 3k):

---
[Original post]

Then I`m finally back and with a new army and project log no less.

This is an all-terminator project I`ve been wanting to do for ages but I`ve spent a lot of time getting hold of all of the minis and parts I needed. The base terminator is chaos but with space wolf plastic termie parts but also some other stuff I had.

The list will consist primarily of:
Logan Grimnar
Njal Stormcaller
2*4 termie wolf guards
1*5 termie wolf guard incl Arjac Rockfist
1*Dread i drop-pod

Totaling in at 1500 points. Not a lot of minis, probably not a game-winning list but I don`t care about that really. I will add some more Chaos stuff as allies. That`s why I went with 13th company as they kinda/or at least could borderline against being more evil than good. Anyways, that`s my logic.

Now unto pre-grey-/greenstuffing pics:

HQs, from left Njal, Logan and Arjac:

Stormshields:

Twin wolfclaws:

Combi-flamers and assault cannon:

Last but not least, the dreadnought:

Haven`t decided on configuration of the squads but I`ll sort that out at another time. Did not include a pic of the drop-pod as it`s stock and not very exciting at that stage.

That was the start of it. Doesn`t look like much yet but I hope I can remedy that as I go along but do leave some comments!

Started greystuffing the wolf-claws first:

The fourth only got gapfilling. That`s the one with the rebreather. I think I`ll add some braids to these three though. Gives it a bit more viking/berserker fell I think.

Logan Grimnar opens up for Wolf Guards as troop or tac choice as you put it, so they`re scoring units

Update time! Things doesn`t look all that nice to be honest, but I still hold hope that it will all come together when I slap some paint on

Njal:

I used the staff from that WHFB Wolf priest character from the Empire army, and an old plastic Empire mage as the base for Njal. The cute little raven is from a bannertop I had lying around. Not all that sold on this mini so far but I will stick to my guns and complete him before I decide on keeping him or making a new one. Didn`t take a pic of the back but I`ve made a cloak for him which looks quite nice.

Wolfclaw#1

Wolfclaw#2

Wolfclaw#3

The wolfclaw armed fellas are more or less done I think. I`ve added as much hair, beards and braids as I thought I could get away with. I think the feral look will be maintained at least.

C&C as always welcomed

The legendary 13th Company of the Space Wolves Legion disappeared 10.000 years ago, and the circumstances of that disappearance are the subject of numerous myths and legends.

From those very myths and legends the elite Wolfwing warband have now returned to the Imperium of Man, still intent as ever upon fulfilling the task they were set ten millenia past by, legend states, the Primarch Leman Russ himself

+ Skald & Eirik +

+++
Skald and Eirik feature several of the trademarks from the 13th Company. First and foremost the geneseed of the 13th Company show a dominance of red hair and iceblue eyes. Even through centuries of warfare those trademarks still hold strong.
Furthermore we see the use of looted enemy armour. As the 13th Company has been away from Fenriz and the rest of the Chapter they have to make do with what they salvage in the aftermath. In a grim tradition they always paint these parts in the Pre-Heresy colours of the Thousand Sons. Why is not known, but one can speculate...
+++

Very happy to show off my vision of the 13th Company members even if daylight is getting shorter by the day so the pics are not the best. Do ask or just leave some comments if you please

Update time again

Got some more wolf guards done:

Storm bolter & chainfist.

Storm bolter, powerfist & cyclone missile launcher.

Frost axe & storm shield.

Thunderhammer & storm shield.

They`re all basecoated now so next in line for some paint. Also working on some Long Fangs and some Grey Hunters. More on those later

+ Hrolf +

+++
Wild and feral as the others armed with twin wolf claws, Hrolf is a savage fighter proudly bearing his battlescars refusing to replace his lost eye. Luck has it that this has amplified his other senses tenfold and he is now an even more dangerous opponent than ever before.
+++

ooo Olaf Hellige ooo
(count-as Njal Stormcaller)

ooo
Ancient. The second oldest in the 13th Company, but the only one not interred in a Dreadnought Olaf still is one of the staunchest and most able warriors in the company. He commands the elements, and when he enters the fray the very elements follow his command. No wonder then that he is the one that has learned how to navigate the warp as the company has lost their navigators centuries ago.
However he is also cursed. The curse of the Wulfen. His very features are distorted and enlarged and it is his pure will that holds the curse at bay.
ooo

Here`s what I have finished so far, not so bad I think

C&C as always welcomed!

Update time!

Caved in and made som Grey Slayers (count-as Grey Hunters). I`ve played Space Marines enough to appreciate the qualities of a tac squad.

Looking forward to painting these, I think they`ll look great with the Wolf Guards. Those without helmets have only received pony-tails (no not a brony here ).

Then it`s the last of the termie armoured guys:

The Abaddon fig will be my "Harald Blodoks" count-as Logan Grimnar. Blodoks means Bloodaxe in norwegian, hence the chaos axe. Gone a bit ko-ko you know. I`ve also re-organised the wolf guards packs into one pack for Harald and one for Olaf. The dread+drop-pod is still in the list and I`m also making a Long Fangs unit.

Do leave some C&C please

Some more wolf guards, this completes Olaf`s pack.

The Grey Slayers are basecoated and dried so they`re next in line.

Post by: Red Skullz

I can explain a bit more of the background of the 13th Wolfwing. It is basically a Loganwing armylist with a 13th Company spin on. 13th Company was a proper armylist back in the days of the "Eye of Terror" campaign and it all suited the minis I had at hand and the retro feel I wanted. 13th Company had two visual aspects with them that differs from normal Space Wolves:
1) They have the pre-heresy grey mixed with red and black armoured parts looted from even chaos space marines
2) openly struggle with the wulfen gene

For me this translated in a weathered and beaten look as these lads have been going at it for a long time without resupplies from the Legion/Chapter and feral with the long hair which funnily enough have a solid strain of red in it akin to Russ himself. I also explain the varying headsizes with the wulfen gene, some are affected some are not. This is also the reason I put the plog in the chaos forums. They are still loyal to Russ and the Allfather but they have strayed to far away with the use of heretic equipment and by letting the wulfen gene develop unhindered. At least in the eyes of the Imperium.

With that out of the way, here`s some pics

Long Fangs, or Claw Einherjer as I call them:

Probably not the best loadout but the amount of plasma in the list is increasing and I like the glowy effect

After playing a game with Olaf my count-as Njal I found that runepriests where a lot of fun so I made another one that can accompany the Grey Slayers (Claw Ulfer) or Claw Einherjer depending on the role I want him to take.

Proper kitbash this one, just need some greenstuffing to tidy up some parts. I do dare someone to name the parts though

As always, C&C welcomed

Cheers Gits! You`re to kind

Apologies in advance for shoddy pic. Daylight is the shortest time of the day here now so good pics are hard to come by when main hobbytime is after the kids are asleep..

Anyhoo. Here's Pack Ulfer*:

(*Ulfer means Wolfes)

A lot of fun minis in this pack, they go along well with the rest of the Wolfwing. I`ll take some army shots of what`s done in my next update

They look good mate. Interesting choice to mix in the old chaos backpacks. Very interesting plasma gun conversions too. I know full well about painting when the kids are abed. Most of my time comes then, in the very early AM if I can't sleep, or while the kids are doing homework.

Post by: Red Skullz

Thanks Gits Since they`re 13th Company and basically scavengers I`ve been able to utilise my bitz boxes to the fullest. The plasma guns are also examples of that. Actually quite like them now but I was very sceptical in the beginning.

My kids are 3, 5 and 7 so I primarily only got the evenings available. That is after she-who-must-be-obeyed is pleased with things in the house

Here`s some more pics of my fav parts in the pack:

Man the OSL looks flat in the pics..I give up (with the pics for this evening!

LOL! That's my wife's nickname too!

That's a really interesting effect you get on the armor. Is that just a wash or do you do something else? (P.S. You should consider my PM.)

Post by: Red Skullz

Haha, well some things are basically universal we can say then

Step-wise it`s:
Black basecoat
- Grey parts:
Codex grey, lightly diluted
Space wolves grey, lightly drybrushed
- Red parts:
Scab red, same as with codex grey
Blood red, same as space wolves grey
- weathering
diluted chaos black applied where I want it
boltgun metal in the black spots
mithril silver in some of the boltgun metal spots
mid-brown wash
dull-coat spray

Should be about it. I find that the dullcoat gives it all a very matt and nice finish that I like a lot at least.

Not taken that way at all Actually that was my intention. Just imagine being alone out in the great grimdark, no supplies, no support, need to scavenge parts to get you by, wulfen curse kicking in. All in all not a very good situation to say the least, lol!

Lovely to see so many old rouge trader marines getting a new lease of life in this project!

I love how scrappy it all looks till it gets a lick of paint and then gets transformed into coherent and cool looking wolves, and they really do look like they've been slogging their way across the eye of terror for a few hundred years, they all look older and gnarlier than most space wolves.

Thank you I`ve got more on the way so no worries there

Someone in my gaming group said the same thing, or rather that it all looked like gak until I painted up the first minis. Happy that you can see what I try to convey with these. It`s not my technical best paintjobs but expression-wise it`s among my best that I`ve managed to pull off with an entire army. If that makes any sense

Evening!

The temperature finally rised above -15 celcius so I was able to varnish and basecoat some units that have been waiting more or less a week for that. When it`s to cold things go to gak if I spray in those temperatures..

I was supposed to have finished both the Long Fangs and the Rune Priest but luck of course would not let me get that far as I dropped the RP...twice! So he will have to wait as I need to put him together again. Luckily parts and paintjob survived..

Anyhoo, here`s my long fangs:

I went for the literal approach that they are among the oldest among the wolves so grey hair for all of them. Looking forward on putting these to use

Next up will be the dread and drop-pod that I`ve finally managed to basecoat.

He`s armed with frost blade and storm shield and one wolf. The wolf is slightly mutated as with the rest of the 13th Company in my fluff. Next up will be greenstuffing, and when I`m done with that I hope that the mark of wulfen will show on him.

Got some more stuff done today. Not more painting however which I should`ve done but progress is still progress I guess

Here is courtesy of Gitsplitta, my Long Fang pack#2:

Yes, those are all original B) The lascannon is from my RT/2nd ed Space Orks but the era is still correct. The pack leader is a jetbike chaplain. Since I have two of him and I like the mini a lot this one made it into this pack. They don`t look like much now, but with some top-knots and small SW details here and there they will do just fine! So yes, this pack will be one of few with all helmets.

Here`s an early WiP stage of the marines I`m swapping with them four named in the pic:

Greenstuffing will ensue so worry not if it does not look like much at the mo`!

Here`s the Lone Wolf & fenrisian wolf pre-basecoat:

Threw in some more horns on the fenrisian wolf just to keep the mutated look all the way through. As for the Lone Wolf I opted to not beard him up. Quite like the sculpt as is so decided to not mess it all up with throwing in a beard. He`s unique as is

Then it`s some marines I`m swapping:

Think they`re about done so I can basecoat them as well and get painting.

The Long Fangs pack is also ready for basecoat. Forgot to take a pic of them but the main difference is that they have top-knots now so nothing much really

Evening!

Got a lot of stuff to show today, so on with the pics

First up the marines I`m swapping:

1-i`s marine was a really crappy pic...but I think they look quite decent. Wouldn`t mind keeping them myself, lol!

Long Fangs pack#2:

Really like this squad, like a lot!

Dreadnought:

I tried to make the marine look crippled, hence kinda leaning towards one side. He`s also one of very few with any bionics in this army. The name is from norse mythology. You know the Jotun from the marvel movies?

Lone Wolf w/Fenrisian companion:

These two really turned out great, by far among my favs in this army! So happy I went for the mutated wolf versus two "normal" ones.

Runepriest:

Yes, this is the one I dropped twice and broke in multiple parts....but here he is!

And then, obligatory 2k army pic:

Hope you like what I`ve done so far, cause there will be more

Evening!

Got a package today with a lot of 2nd hand miniatures I bought for a cheap buck. One of the main things I bought was a lot of bikers. I love bikers but I`ve never afforded myself it even if I`ve dreamt of a White Scars army for ages (or rather since I saw Fat Blokes WS army in WD). Now I won`t go there yet so I used 5 of the 11 bikers for this army.

Here`s the WiP pre-greenstuffing:

From left to right; normal biker, powerfist, wolf priest, plasma pistol and normal biker.

Hello all!

Got a little update before the holidays take over Found an assault bike (yay!) that I`d forgot about. It`s an older version with the sidecarriage in metal. It came with a heavy bolter but I wanted a multi-melta, which I don`t have so I made one from some parts that I found. Put it all on a 60mm corked base to keep it in line with the rest. I also changed the biker with plasma pistol with a flamer. That update is so small I didn`t bother taking a pic of it. Think this unit will be quite hard hitting with the Wolf Priest and all so excited to test it out

The biker is primarily a berzerker body but the head is a RT barehead. Think it`s a sergeant? The gunner is mainly a RT era body with a termie wolf guard head and gunner arms from the chaos vehicle kit. Threw in some more battery packs and cables to make everything a bit more interesting. Considering adding some stowage to all bikes as well, just gotta figure out what I have first.

With all that said, Merry Christmas everyone

I would like to suggest you paint the names in the bases red, then go over them in orange and yellow. The white is too Blah!!!

Last installment for this army. Got two other projects I will focus on which is an IG Armoured Company army and a Daemons army. Still, I`m at approx 2300-2400 points for the Wolfwing so I think that will do for the time being

Wolf Priest:

Regular bikers for the WPs retinue:

Powerfist and flamer for the WPs retinue:

Attack bike with multi-melta for the WPs retinue:

Land Speeder that will either assist or go sniping:

And the entire Wolfwing as it stands now:

PS: I`m behind replying to some GMS stuff and sending the stuff I`ve finished. Apologies in advance! The holidays have been crazy mad

Well that took long

Here`s my objective markers and a second wolfpriest:

After a lot of thought and even more frantic searching through my bitz boxes I ended up with looted armour and kit objectives. After all, my lads take what they can get! I will paint them up in the predominately red scheme that I use for the chaos bitz on my wolfwing.
The Wolf Priest. I guess you can see the base model for him. I just got so inspired by the GMS trades I`m getting so I made a dedicated HQ for that pack. Hope that more want to contribute to them As far as the Kharn mini go, I just like it a lot but wanted a slightly different take on him but retaining the cool parts of the mini. Pretty much how I approached my Abaddon conversion.

The objectives and the wolfpriest will be basecoated and painted this coming week.

Been a few days since the last update but I`ve got a few things done.

Wolf priest on foot and objective markers:

Then I set out to get this baby back in use again:

Yes, for the attentive this means that there will be no more Night Lords from me. They have been traded for daemons

This one I`m really happy with. Got a great trade (from my perspective) and landed a Land Raider. HUGE bonus:

It`s banged up, crappy painted, poorly assembled, lacks parts that I will need to rebuild with plasticard but I don`t care. I got myself a Land Raider and I will manage to bring this one back in a good way

Very cool minis! Couple of thoughts/suggestions, hope you don't mind:
1)Drill out barrels on predator! By all means still go all osl insides though!
2)I like where you're going with weathering but I suggest you do some muddying/dusting up -

Get an old, thick brush (or-gw tank brush).
Load with codex grey or similar.
Wipe near-clean (not quite as thoroughly as for a conventional drybrushing).
Give the tank the once-over on all edges and raised surfaces.

Then run a quick metal drybrush along the tank tracks - there tends to be more wear here, ww2 modellers often use a pencil for this but personally I don't like to mix media.

Then the mud. Tamiya mud sticks are cool, if you have one adds some blobs - really splotchy - randomly over tracks, and underside of sponsons, and where tracks disappear into farings (mud always collects there). Alternatively, you can add some sand with pva or just skip this step altogether.

Then, drybrush with a good earth brown (vj earth, gw bestial, etc). Crucially, however, remember to brush vertically from bottom to top; this ensures beliveable splatter.

Hope that's useful!

Cheers mate

That style of weathering (dusting etc) will be for my renegade armoured company force that will soon be started. I just had to keep the style that I started on the termies throughout I think I`ve done quite a lot of what you`ve listed but these big models are a total pain to take proper pics of

Great update Red. Love the old predator. Is that OSL I see on the las cannons?? Agree with graven, drill the barrels on the guns. His weathering advice is very solid too.

13th Wolfwing (OOP but with a select few newer kits) - not done yet! @ 2013/02/20 11:36:49

Post by: Red Skullz

Cheers Gits

Yeah that is OSL indeed. Good or bad? As for drilling the barrels. I`m not shy of modifying stuff but I didn`t do it on these in fear of messing up the aligmnent of the barrel hole. If that makes sense?

In other news I got myself a second land raider which also will require a lot of work and changing of weapons because I want the flamer variant as it`s 10 points cheaper hence making it possible for me to field two LR in a 1500 pts game I also got two Land Speeders. My original plan was to only use one of these alongside the one I`ve already made but when both of the newest additions are Typhoons I have to include both!

Good times

If you aren't going to drill a barrel hole, you should paint a black dot in the middle. Having nothing to represent the hole in the gun barrel takes quite a bit out of the visual appeal (at least for me).

Sounds like you've got some great projects lined up Red... can't wait!

Thanks graven I fell I kinda got lucky that the theme and everything just fell in place as I went along really. I'm very pleased with the strong image and identity of the army. As far as ressurection. This land raider was a nightmare to get to this stage. I had to tear the front ramp off for example and then rebuild it. Ah well, flipside of getting it for a quarter of the prize of a new one I guess

I like the appearance of your 13th wing - it breathes that de-humanized brutality of RT era space marine illustrations: not (yet) chaos, but definitely warped minds. Stylewise though, it is perfectly the Viking vibe of the Space Wolfes before they were made werewolfes. Your painting style accentuates that very strongly. Immediately I have in mind some thunderhawks coming out of nowhere, stylised dragon head jaws framing the assault ramps that spew out a nearly amorph mass of weapons, legs, roaring bearded heads, the unaware moisture farmers and scrapmetal traders freezing in shock while the raging warriors lay a trail of purposely and intentionally inflicted collateral damages as they spearhead into the cultist's temple...

I like them quite a lot. They're fragile, as is any LS... and I wouldn't recommend running them singly. Run them in sets of 2 or 3. The other thing I did that I think is working is to not give them any short range weapons... only the TMLs and heavy bolters. Things that can reach out a long way so I don't have to bring them in close where my opponents bolt guns can shoot the daylights out of them. They represent a lot of fire power... 4 ML shots and 6 HBs... that's nothing to sneeze at. And the HBs at S5 mean they have a (slight) chance of glancing AV 12... so you can fire at things like dreads or heavy flyers without feeling like you're wasting shots. They've really saved my bacon in a couple of games now.

I like them. If you don't mind a suggestion... you might consider coming up with a different color/treatment for the treads on the LRs... it would make them stand out a lot more I think.

I like the faded red stripes on the left sides though. Nice effect. Nice work on the LST bases too.
