UPDATE: Painting tutorial in my B&C thread hereabouts and candle-sculpting tutorial halfway down this post.
Hellllooooo Dakka. I've lurked here for several years now. I've been working on a Word Bearers army for well over 4 years, and I've had a painting thread devoted to them over at Bolter and Chainsword for quite some time. However, I've been looking at getting into painting things from other miniature lines, so I've decided to branch out and open up a thread here (also because every time I see Darth Bob at the FLGS he tells me to post here). For now, though, I don't have much to show that isn't spiky, dark red and evil, so this thread will mostly be full of the sons of Lorgar for a little while.
To give a quick introduction to this army, I fell in love with the Word Bearers the moment I opened the 3.5 codex and saw the image on their page (now in glorious full color on pg.13 of the 6e CSM dex). However, at the time I was doing a Blood Ravens army. I started off with the simple goal of using Doghouse's Gothic-Pattern tutorial to create a few Chaos Marines as a "do-something-slightly-different" project between Blood Ravens squads. At some point I just abandoned the Blood Ravens altogether and "a few Chaos Marines" blew up into a whole company, or "Cohort" in Word Bearer terms. I'm not quite there yet but I'm well on my way to having the infantry finished by the end of the year. All of my squads are 12-man going by Index Astartes fluff. Fairly early on in the project I started doing little "dioramas" of Chaos Marines butchering Imperial Guardsmen in various ways and it sort of grew into a theme throughout the army.
Naturally over the course of five years techniques change, and some of my older work I'm not necessarily proud of. However, I've recently done a complete revamp where I retouched every single model, adding candles and various other details throughout. In the near future I plan to go back through and paint all the eyes, as well as ensure more consistency between older and newer models.
More images, angles and closeups of most of these models either are or will be available in my gallery. I'm basically trying to cram several years of army into the image limit, plus uploading everything to Dakka's gallery is going to take a while, so bear with me. I also apologize for some of the pics being less than spectacular, particularly some of the squad shots, my photography skills are not the best. Some of these pics are from long before I even discovered the glory of the lightbox, so those may be particularly terrible. However, most of these images are uploaded in glorious 2848x2134, so click on them for MASSIVE HIGH-RESOLUTION ZOOMAGE.
C&C is very welcome, of course. Without further ado, here's some Word Bearers.
Dark Apostle, Razakel the Unhallowed
He's sort of an experiment in truescaling, there's a size comparison in my gallery.
I Captain and Coryphaeus, Kol Marchosias
First Acolyte Naberus
II Captain, Kor Abalam
Sorcerer Orobas
Forgepriest, Kor Halphas
Champions, Icon Bearers and Musicians
XII Coterie, Phael Berith
XIII Coterie, Phael Raum
XIV Coterie, Phael Isskar
XVII Coterie, Quor Stolas
XIX Coterie, Phael Apollyon
XX Coterie, Phael Havres
II Coterie, Quor Allocer
Cultist Mob
Cultist Overseer
Discords
I appear to be very close to the image limit and I'm nowhere near done. I also have tanks and a Warhound Titan, and I wanted to post a few current WIPs. For now, I'm going to take a break, as all this copypasting is making my fingers bleed, will post all that stuff later. Again, C&C very welcome.

^Thanks for the kind words. Continuing from the OP with tanks. The Predators are quite samey but I'm planning on making "command tanks" so I can use them as Assassin Squadrons.
Autocannon Predators, Avnas and Valefor
Lascannon Predators, Eligos and Agares
Vindicator, Bifrons
Vindicator, Andras
Vindicator, Oriax (the crew took the whole "Bearing the Word" thing quite literally)
Hellblade Fighters "Shiela", "Sharon" and "Shirley" (I cannot remember which is which, but that's half the fun. I have bases for these made from Battle for Macragge terrain but I'm planning on moving them to the now-standard Valk bases)
Defiler
Warhound Titan, "Vanessa"
Even more fearsome than a Warhound Titan, it's... The Word Bear! Base model is a Reaper Werebear with some GS and Daemon Prince bitz on top of it.
Ultraforge Greater Plague Demon - Not a Word Bearer, obviously, but it was probably the most fun I've ever had painting anything. Just went nuts with it. Obviously I'll be using it as a Great Unclean One.
And here's what I've been working on more recently. I've almost finished a DV Lord and Helbrute, they mostly just need to be based at this point.
Due to lack of bitz for said bases, the two of them have taken a backseat to the remainder of my Word Bearer Cohort, which is 3 squads of CSMs and one squad of Raptors. 2 of the CSM squads and the Raptors have been basecoated, washed and highlighted. Not pictured are the CSM squads' plasmagunners, champions, and one Icon Bearer - those have been painted already, I'll include shots of them when I complete these squads.
The third CSM squad consists entirely of dioramas - plenty of dead Cadians to go around. I'll be posting pics of those as I start to work on them. My current plan is to get the diorama squad up to the same point as the Raptors and the bolter mooks, then base everything. After that I'm going to start assembly-lining detail work 6 or so models at a time. I'm painting these for Bolter and Chainsword's Call of Chaos - the deadline is technically January 18th but I'm aiming for December 31st, I'd just like to have them done by the end of the year.
Sorry to cram so many pics into so few posts. Shouldn't be necessary again, will mostly be posting in small updates from now on, which will most likely be few and far between. I usually only feel like painting a few times a week, if at all. After I get those squads done I plan on painting some non- GW stuff - I have shelves full of Anima Tactics, Dark Sword and Red Box minis I've just never touched. Would be nice to paint one model at a time, too - I've basically been assembly-lining Word Bearers for the last few years. Hell, I've been assembly-lining tanks. Anyway, thanks for looking, should have an update on the diorama squad in a few days.

Hands down, the best Word Bearers army I've ever seen. Very creative use of bits and green stuff and I especially like the point blank shooting effects of the Melta/Flamer models, especially with the source lighting on those.
The Titan is plain eerie looking. I love the interiors and the remains of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Great stuff, all around.

Love the scrawl all over the vehicles and the banners are excellent. The banners really look like how you would imagine a several thousand year old banner in the hands of people who are more likely to get blood on it than wash it and darn the holes would look. I love how grimy they look, can never imagine Chaos marines taking the time to scrub the blood and dirt off their ancient wargear.

Wow, thanks for the reception, Dakkanauts! Got some GS work done on the Raptors and Bolter mooks from the end of my last post, and got the CC squad I mentioned up to the same point. I'll have closeups of the diorama guys up once they're finished. Again, apologies for the photography, I'm painting these for B&C's Call of Chaos, so at the moment I'm mostly just trying to show that there's been progress.
I may wash some of the metals a little, I'm aware of the contrast issue with most of my older models and that is something I'd like to address, but Leadbelcher is just a bit too bright by itself for my taste.
Also thought I'd share the Fellblade I've been working on. I used Machinator's fantastic Blood and Skulls Industry bitz on this, put a Zombie Dragon skull on the barrel, replaced the Heavy Bolters with Reaper Autocannons (because CHAOS), and sculpted on candles and impurity seals. Not sure I'm done with the GS bits, I may add more as I paint it depending on whether or not what's already there is "too much." The treads are actually as sharp as they look, by the way, I've played an Apoc game with it and it took a while trying to pick all the little bits of green felt out of there.

Finished the plasmagun squads today. The plasmagunners, champions and one of the icon bearers were painted quite some time ago, but I've done some slight tweaking to bring them in line with the new paints, mainly bumping up the highlights and script a little to improve the contrast.
XV Coterie, Phael Mathim (including a "Plasma: Totally Worth It" marine)
XVI Coterie, Phael Ayporos
Some closeups -
Champions
XV Coterie Plasmagunners
XVI Coterie Plasmagunners
Musicians (the teeth on the fellow on the left are quite nasty, didn't notice until after pics were uploaded, will have to fix that)
Icon Bearers (Left one was the one I'd painted previously, think I washed the right one a bit too heavily, may try to fix it at some point)
And some of my favorites out of the bolter marines.
Should have the Raptors done in a few days, possibly tomorrow.

Hi Blackadder here, I was doing a search on google for the best looking Chaos Warhound paint schemes and yours stood out as an exemplary effort. I shall be attempting preliminary base colouration on my Warhound models interior and would like to pick your brain on the best way to commence.
I was particularly impressed by the skull coloration you achieved and how you went about layering the paint to accomplish the result?
Thanks,

Thanks for the comments guys. Apologies once again for the long silence.
@Igloo - Credit goes to Doghouse for the idea for the legs, link to his tutorial: www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=90388 B&C is down at the moment, though.
@Blackadder - My one recommendation with the Warhound's interior is, by all the gods, do NOT put it together before painting it. There are a lot of little details that are very, very difficult to reach with the thing put together. I was pretty sloppy with the interior on mine. It's why I went overboard with all the blood, it's quite good at covering up mistakes. For the metallics, I think I mostly just used a basecoat of Boltgun, washed it with Badab Black and Devlan Mud, and drybrushed with Boltgun again. For the fleshy areas I think I just used a layer of Tallarn Flesh and then drenched it in blood - the mix was about 50/50 Tamiya Clear Red and GW Black Ink. I'm running out of Black Ink so I've been replacing it with Tamiya Smoke recently, but it's quite watery, adding a bit of Abaddon Black seems to help with the gory texture and it makes it stick better.
As for the skull, if you're referring to the one on the moderati, I think that was just a layer of Dheneb Stone foundation paint with a wash of Devlan Mud. I might have highlighted that with more Dheneb and then washed it again, but I don't think I did. I really miss Dheneb Stone, it was fantastic for bones and such. Might try a 50/50ish mix of Baneblade Brown and Screaming Skull if you don't have any left over.
So, diorama squad is finished. Armor on the Guardsmen turned out much greener than I wanted it to, I used Waaagh! Flesh for it, think I should've gone with Loren Forest. May retouch that in the future.
XI Coterie, Phael Morax
Champion
Icon/Bolt Pistol Headshot
Flamer (Lighting effect is mostly just several successive layers of light drybrushing, same goes for the headshot and meltagunner)
Meltagunner
Drummer
Facepunch
Bionic dude with chainaxe
Spinerippy dude (could probably use some extra bone highlights on the spine now that I look at the pic)
Chainsword beheading
Mostly Armless
KALI MA! (hard to see in the pic, but that's the guardsman's heart in his hand)
Dual chainaxe trisection
And this completes the II Cohort except for a Chosen squad - I have no idea when I'll get around to them, my plan is to have 12 MkIV guys with chainglaives and capes similar to the ones on all of my Aspiring Champions. Squad will likely include an Apothecary using Fabius Bile's backpack. Will probably include a diorama or two. Don't have bits for the chainglaives yet (planning on using GK Nemesis Halberds with the blades replaced with CSM chainswords), so right now my plan is to paint a Land Raider I've had laying around for years, then some Terminators. Anyway, C&C welcome.

I apologize for my long silence, been working slowly but surely over the last two and a half months. Got a Land Raider and Storm Eagle done. The Eagle's lacking basing at the moment and will be for some time, I need to get some Guard tanks and smash 'em, splitting what's left between this and some new Hell Blade bases, but at the moment I don't have the kind of cash that allows one to buy a $60 model for the sole purpose of wrecking it. Also, apologies for the crap lighting on the Eagle pics, I need to play with the lighting on my desk but there's not much space to do it.
I also finished the Dark Vengeance Lord's base quite some time ago, don't know how I forgot to post him.
Next project is actually a Black Templars Dreadnought from Forge World (painting it as a commission), and a small Khador(!) force (again, commission - I'm not taking them online, I prefer to do it locally with people I know). After that I'll likely get back to my Word Bearers with a pair of Whirlwind Hyperios...es.

Thank for the feedback, guys. Was feeling a bit burnt out so I haven't done much in the last few months. However, I have just finished a... Black Templars Dreadnought? What?
Took this as a commission for a buddy... like three months ago, I have no excuse for taking this bloody long but there it is. The severed Word Bearer head was a request, the blood was improvised - I may have gotten slightly carried away with it, I do tend to do that when it comes to blood. I'll get back to work on the Word Bearers... soonish. Probably. I've had two Hyperioses staring at me for months but I obviously couldn't work on them due to the Templar dread. They're next, then I've got a bunch of Terminators, cultists and a lesser Acolyte (the DV chosen champ). After that it's on to a Baneblade. I've got plans (and bitz) for a squad of Chosen. I've also got plans (but no bitz - or money for that matter) for a really decked-out Shadowsword and a pair of Decimators, but those are grim-darkness-far-future type projects.

Got the pair of Hyperioses about halfway done. The brass on the missiles isn't finished and the washes didn't go well on the front of the one on the left, I'll be covering up the worst of it with fleshybits so that won't be a problem. Candles, fleshybits, script, battle damage and lenses/headlights still to do, should be done in a few days.
Also working on finishing up the Helbrute's base. I'll have a pic when it's done (probably with the finished Whirlwinds).
Idols, I had no idea my B&C thread was anywhere near the front page of results. I'm seeing at number 7 but still, I'm honored. Glad to have inspired you. Praise Lorgar!
Regarding the cultists/chosen, they won't be DV (sold the cultists, been meaning to paint the Chosen), I've already got 50 cultists (plus 20 unpainted) converted from Empire Flagellants and I'm gonna keep going with that. The Chosen will be a 12-man squad similar to my normal rank-and-file but I'll be using mkIV heads/torsos mixed with Raptor bits. I have most of the bits for them but I want them to be one of my final projects for this army (assuming I don't start another Cohort) so they're still down the road a ways.

I've seen photos of these scattered across the internet for a while now, but it's cool to see it all in one place.
If you don't mind, I have a quick question. The red armour looks like it has a texture in the paint (you can really see it on the front of the whirlwinds and on the titan) where it is a slightly splotchy 9in a good way) mix of red and brownish red. Did you just do that by adding a wash, or did you do something else to it?
Thanks and keep up the great work!

Post by: Malika2
Will you be using the latest Chaos Warrior warrior models as well?
13228
Post by: RazakelXIII
@cpyke - Thanks! My red is done with a basecoat of Khorne Red (on infantry I then highlight with Mephiston), and then hit it with one thick coat of Army Painter Dark Tone (basically the same as Badab Black), then TWO thick coats of Army Painter Strong Tone (Devlan Mud - on vehicles I do a light drybrush of Khorne between these two not-Devlan layers rather than taking the time to highlight). The washes are mainly responsible for the blotchiness - I do try to prevent them from pooling too much but on the left Whirlwind in particular it did get quite ugly on the front - but I also typically don't take the time to make sure the initial Khorne basecoat is even. What this all basically means is everything looks heavily worn and textured and I get to be lazy! Obviously I would not recommend doing this on models intended to have a particularly light or clean-looking color scheme.
Malika2 - Other than the plastic Lord (who I think might make a good Sorcerer with a little work), I wasn't planning on it. I might be able to mine the Warshrine and/or the Chariot for bitz, but I haven't seen the kits in person and nothing jumps out at me from GW's pics (except maybe the two Chaos star icons on the back of the Chariot, those are quite nice).
Alright, finished the Hyperioseseses.
Whirlwind Hyperios Kabaiel
Whirlwind Hyperios Murmux
And I FINALLY finished the Helbrute's base. Poor guy.
I sculpted that immediately after having watched a certain Wedding on a certain tv show. I knew what was going to happen but it still left me a bit shaken up. I needed an outlet. Anyway, next up is probably Terminators. I have 13 of them (2 squads of 6 plus 1 to round out the pre-existing 5-man squad). Not sure if/how I'm going to split those up, we shall see. Not planning any dioramas for these, but who knows.

I absolutely love these guys, and my favourites are the first squads you put up, so dirty and yet magnificently painted! A basic tutorial as mentioned above, just for the armour and basic guys, would be amazing! You are very talented, a fantastic looking army.
13228
Post by: RazakelXIII
@Sledgio and Tyranidcrusher - So it's only been two months since you asked, but I've actually done a tutorial in my B&C thread. Dunno why I never linked it in my OP here, I'll edit it in now. Linkifications!
Just a quick update to confirm that I'm still alive. Been slowly painting those terminators for the past two months, forgot how tedious all the trim on Chaos Terminators can be. Anyway, they're at about 50% now, here's a pic.
The guy on the left with the combi-melta isn't a member of this squad, he's there to bring my pre-existing squad up to 6 dudesmen. Also no icons or banners yet, been having trouble deciding what to do for that. Tried a couple different options and I'm not happy with any of them, might have to roll my own. Also ripped the banner off the guy in my Melta/ PF termy squad since I thought holding a bannerpole with a power fist looked a bit derpy. Going to either go for smallish back-mounted banners or just stick with little chaos star icons.
Also this happened.
Sexy Forge World-ness because the GW Shadowsword looks like gak. I was GOING to wait until AFTER I'd painted the Baneblade, but... Anyway, I've got evil plans for this tank. At the rate I'm going though, it'll be a while. Decimators won't be converted at all aside from some fleshybits and candles, as I already fething love the models as they are. I put them on flyer bases since they didn't fit on the 60mms with the poses I wanted, plus it should give me plenty of room for dead guardsmen. One on the right doesn't have the guns pointing in the same place, not sure if I'm going to leave it that way. Kind of looks like he's just blown something up and now he's considering a new target, I... think I like it?
Considering stripping all my Cultists and painting them brighter, I'm not happy with how dark they are. The whole blood-drenched thing seemed like a good idea at the time but now it just seems like a lazy excuse for not actually making them look nice. I might just try to layer over what's already there, I really don't want to repaint 50 cultists from scratch in addition to the 30 or so I've already got on my to-do shelf. I'm actually kind of feeling like I'm putting myself through No-Fun-Allowed mode while I work through this backlog of models, got to finish up these Terminators (and then another 6 with combi-plasmas - the conversion I've done is a bit pants but it serves its purpose), 2 Defilers and then do whatever I want to do with these Cultists before I allow myself to tackle the superheavies, otherwise I'll never get around to it. I do have a pair of Dreadnoughts sitting around that I could have some fun with should the need arise to break up the tedium, though, so there's that.
...I'm dreaming of a Stormblade Christmas...

Thanks for the comments. Terminator squad is done. I decided to make them the command squad for my Anointed/1st Cohort, they deploy with the Coryphaeus (aka Word Beard). So I gave 'em all cloaks. There'll be a Terminator apothecary to go with this squad, he's half-built at the moment, I'll show him off when the sculpting's done. Anyway, pic:
Anointed Command Coterie, Quor Purson
I've started painting the eyes (going back and doing this with my whole army is something I've wanted to do for a while, along with clearer, possibly fire-y Legion symbols) and I've also changed the way I paint candle flames - doing way less layers and only going up to yellow, I think it looks much better both up close and at a distance. The pic makes them look kind of yellowy but they're actually mostly orange IRL - I've just done layers of Wild Rider Red, then Fire Dragon Bright, then Averland Sunset.
Next project is touching up my old Terminator squad (the seventh Termy I painted with the squad above is also finished, he'll be included in the updated group shot for the old squad), and then I'll move on to a combi-plasma squad. After that I've decided to assembly-line my two remaining Defilers - it'll be painful but if I just paint one at a time I'll never finish them. I've also re-primed all my Cultists. They'll likely come after the Defilers. Paint 30 cultists, do a Dreadnought and a Decimator, paint 30 cultists, do a Dreadnought and a Decimator, paint 30 cultists, and then finally get to my Chosen, Possessed and the superheavies. Each group of 30 cultists will likely be done in 3 assembly-lined batches of 10. It's going to take a while but it'll just make me feel better, really wasn't happy with them as they were.

I thought you went a different route for a bit, from WB to IW. Then I clicked the picture to zoom in and realised that those were candles and not hazard stripes. I really love your WB. The amount of detail in each model is just excellent.
Where'd you get those capes for the terminators? They make them look so menacing!

@Know No Pear: Sorry for taking so long to answer, but I hand-sculpt all the cloaks in my army - I just flatten out a big square of GS and hack at the edges with sprue clippers. The idea was to emulate the WHFB Chaos Warrior cloaks but they're not very big, nor are they dynamic enough to get the sort of wrap-around effect I try to go for.
Yet another month-long silence and I'm back with more (very PIP) Termies. The washing and highlighting all took place in the last few days, it just takes me a while to work up the will to basecoat. It's mostly the trim's fault, Chaos Termies have SO MUCH OF IT oh muh god.
Metal highlights need a bit of de-blob-ification in places, the brush I used was dying. I may replace the combi-plasmas with Sternguard bits... I dunno. I initially wasn't happy with them but they're kind of growing on me. Thoughts?
Anyway, new army shot soon, fellow Traitors! Will try to find a big enough table once this squad gets done.

@Know No Pear: Really shoulda posted one in the first place. Here ya go:
I don't really put much effort into them. I find GS frustrating to work with at the best of times (so naturally I did a Gothic-pattern army - derp), but I feel like the effect on the silhouette is worth it. It really helps squad champs, or in this case the whole squad, stand out. I should note that they tend to require adjustment as the GS cures, since, because Sir Isaac Newton can't just let things be, they tend to droop a bit. The furs are just another big blob of GS that I stab over and over with a GW sculpting tool until it looks sort of nice-ish, btw. It's actually very cathartic.
Speaking of stabbing big blobs of GS a lot, here's a preview of coming attractions. It represents another step on my eternal quest to achieve maximum Guardsman overkill.
It's becoming extremely forward-heavy, to the point where I'm getting worried about it tipping over, so I'm probably not adding any more to it. As always, very open to C&C.
EDIT: Oh, and I got the fleshybits on the combi-plasma squad done today. Will try to make the final push to finish them tomorrow.

Indeed, the capes really do help the silhouette. If only I were playing a true chaos army!
Where do you get your GS? That huge lump must've been a pain to part with! i must say it looks extremely chaosy, and looking at how your models have turned out thus far, the defiler's gonna look amazing. Are you going with a normal coloured flame? I think it'd be cool if the flame wasn't fire, instead being some warp magic thingy.
Looking forward to more updates!

Thanks gents. Know No Pear, I get my GS from Warstore. It's actually called Kneadatite and it comes in a tube, but it's exactly the same thing, and you get about 3 or 4 times as much as you would from GW for about the same price. Linky (appears to be out of stock at the moment). As for the fire, yeah, I'm thinking about painting it purple or green (I don't want too much blue in this army), but I've also got orange fire elsewhere in my army (Stonehorn-Vindicator, flamers, alllll the candles) so I'm not sure if I want to deviate that much.
Plasmanator squad is done!
Anointed VII Coterie, Quor Zefar
I also revamped my old Combi-Melta/Fist squad a while ago and added a sixth dudesman.
Anointed III Coterie, Quor Allocer
I wanted to put up an army shot with this update but I really don't have time to set one up today. Will try to get something up this week. Defilers are up next for painting, my soul already hurts from all those metallic highlights.

Army shot!
You may notice that Vanessa now has a base. This is because she managed to survive a whole Apocalypse game for once. The universe likes to correct itself when such cosmically wrong events occur, so as soon as I got her home, all her toes fell off and she would no longer stand up. The base is to ensure that this cannot happen again. There Will Be Guardsmen. Anyway, unpainted stuff:
The psyker in front is technically done, but I have plans to give him a much nicer base. Not pictured are 3 Hell Blade Fighters, because I forgot them. They are actually "finished," but I have no bases for them and I kind of want to repaint them anyway, I find them very... dull.
And some very WIP HQs. All are in dire need of GS and in some cases, MOAR BITZ.
So, on to the Defilers.

I have been watching for years here and other sites, this army is amazing . If you need some weight on the back of the defiler you could always make smoke for the exhaust, a big barrel of guardsmen flamed juice, or a nice little shrine of BBQ'd guardsmen.

Someone over on B&C asked for a closeup on the Terminator sorcerer in the back of the last pic. The model was really rough when I posted that, so I used the request as motivation to get him a bit closer to paint-worthy. Still needs some work, and my GS work is always a bit messy in places, but he's coming along. I'll be ditching the rock/big GS lump he's standing on for... well, you'll see.
Beard and/or hair, y/n?
Also, something else I whipped up:
He'll be getting paint (and probably a cloak) whenever I get around to my Chosen squad. Pardon the flecks of GS all over his torso, I tried to give him a hood and it didn't work out. 'Course, if at first you don't succeed...
Regarding paint, I'm taking a sanity-break from assembly-lining things and I've decided to paint the Acolyte/ DV Chosen Champ next instead of the Defilers (I need time on them for more GS work). It feels like it's been ages since I've painted one model by itself.
As if I don't already have enough stuff to paint, I was one of pledgers for the Red Box Games Helsvakt Kickstarter. There have been numerous difficulties in production and I wasn't really expecting my shipment to arrive any time soon, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the box on my doorstep a few days ago. Pretty much pledged for at least one of everything so I've got my work cut out for me. Word Bearers are always my main priority, no matter how hard I try to tell myself they're not - one of these days I should post a pic of the shelves I've got full of unpainted non- CSM stuff - but I may just have to paint some of these RBG minis soon, I'm very impressed with the quality of the minis I've examined so far.

Working on the Acolyte, got basecoats and highlights done.
I've also been going maybe juuuust a little crazy on that Terminator Sorcerer.
33919
Post by: Moltar
No. That sorcerer isn't crazy at all. Well, maybe crazy awesome! Red on the acolyte looks good. That sorc, though! The star of flames is a good idea. The shooting skulls are a must and that killer facial hair! Does his mustache count as lightning claws? It should.
13228
Post by: RazakelXIII
Ha, thanks Moltar. But who needs lightning claws when you know the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique?
I was going to call the Acolyte done, but then I took pics of it and they revealed all sorts of horrible problems. The scar on his forehead just looks like a big red blotch in the pics, it looks fine IRL. I dunno, I may go back and touch some things up.
No further progress on the Sorcerer. I have basecoated my two Defilers in Leadbelcher (usually I do red first but with all the metallics on Defilers this is going to be much easier). I also got another Land Raider, so I've put that together. Probably not going to get painted for a long time.

Defilers aren't quite done yet, but it's been far too long since I've updated. Decided to go back and do some extra sculpting on the flames for both of them. Anyway, mostly done, feel like I could actually add some more script though.
Please excuse the out-of-focus claw on this one.

Awesome!
Will there be Obliterators and Mutilators as well?
13228
Post by: RazakelXIII
And another long silence. Sorry 'bout that. Malika2, eh... possibly? I've never been a fan of Oblits' models or fluff ("technovirus"?) and the Mutilators didn't help any, but I've always had it in the back of my head that eventually I'd do up a squad converted from Terminators. I keep putting it off though. So maybe, but probably not any time soon unless I get horrendously bored, which isn't likely due to all this new FW stuff coming out (probably going to be placing a big order in January).
Anyway, sculpting the daemonflame from the Defilers' flamers, thought I'd post pics before I get started painting it. I'm thinking purple, including all the daemon bits - I think painting them all in different colors would be "too much" visually.
The big one first, there's still a guardsman in there, the Bloodletter face is about to chomp his head off.
And just a little on the other one, just stuck a Nurgling and a Daemonette face in there.
This is more or less a prototype for what I'm planning to do with the Terminator Sorcerer, as well as my eventual re-basing of the Forge World renegade psyker.

I know what you mean, I'm not that fond of the existing Obliterator models either (don't get me started on the Mutilators). However, now that the Space Marine Centurions are out, you might want to play with those. Since they're plastic, you can easily cut them up and fix them. Candleshoes over at B&C managed to tweak those models quite niceliy. You could try to make some morphing weapons and such, either go for a very techy route, or perhaps some fellow aflame with all sorts of weapons appearing out of the flames?

I return once again! Baneblade is finished:
In other news, I put in a Forge World order around Christmas. So this happened:
And I've cobbled together a custom Land Raider using a Prometheus as a base. Lopped the heavy bolter barrels off and replaced them with FW autocannons, and stuck a Hellhound gun on the front. The idea comes from an ancient thread on B&C discussing Land Raider variants for Apocalypse, someone suggested this and dubbed it the Land Raider Avarice. Wanted to build one for ages, kept trying to get Defiler-pattern Reaper barrels from people at my FLGS, and then lo and behold, FW comes along and releases their autocannon set.
Obviously still under construction, I'm out of Havoc launchers at the moment. And spikes. Honestly never thought I'd use all of those up.
Anyway, no progress on the Sorcerer. My next project is going to be fixing up a friend's Ork army. It got run over by a car years ago and it's been in a state of complete disarray since. Surprisingly not a lot of broken parts, mostly just Boyz with arms and heads popped off, but I haven't gotten to the vehicles yet....

Thanks guys. Work on the Termy Sorc continues. I found a Guardsman arm to stick in the hellmouth ("OMNOMNOMNOMNOM") and I keep adding more flames. There was a point where this needed to stop and we've clearly passed it, but let's keep going and see what happens.
Seriously, it's getting out of hand. I still feel like it needs something but I think at this point I should probably stop sculpting and start painting. Thoughts?
Also, Lorgar, Angron, the Land Raider Avarice and another standard Land Raider have been primed. On the one hand, I wanted to get started on the revamp. On the other hand, I have two fething Primarchs on my shelf. Angron's probably getting painted first.

Post by: Darth Bob
The hellmouth/fiery daemon slug is awesome. I wouldn't do any more because, I agree, it would be waaaay passed the point of over-done. I think it will look more complete once paint has been applied and the multiple shades of purple help to break up the giant blob of green.
13228
Post by: RazakelXIII
Still torn on the Termy Sorc, starting on Angron instead! This is very early PIP, just a basecoat, a wash and a layer. Aware of the lack of contrast on the shoulderpads at the moment, first priority at the moment is going to be fixing that. Probably going to go nuts on washes and highlights on this one, just experimenting with the metal texture.

Thanks, Migsula, that means a lot coming from you. I seem to recall you starting your AL thread here around the same time I started posting my WBs over on B&C, and YOUR commitment has been a huge inspiration to me. Your truescale/artscale work is really the best there is, and Veron Haag is still one of the best Inquisitor conversions out there, IMO.
So, still going on Angron. Gold/bronze is a bit further along. I did a lot of washing in the crevices with watered-down Leviathan Purple (which is an idea I totally stole from... someone on Dakka, I have no idea who it was but if you're reading this, thanks). Going to have to switch to the Army Painter stuff soon since I'm running low. It REALLY brought out a lot of extra color in the gold, I think this is going to be my go-to method for gold now. I'm not sure how much further I should go on the highlights, I'm thinking I should do a little edge-highlighting in Ironbreaker, maybe, and probably deepen some of the scratches on his armor. I've also basecoated the reds, as well as the purple on what I've decided will be the Emperor's Children marine on his base, but that's hardly very exciting. If the purple seems too bright, don't worry - there will be Devlan Mud.

Yeesh, it's been almost a month. Not a whole lot of progress, the only things I'm considering finished here are the gold on his armor, the white-ish areas on the World Eater's armor (although I'll be doing quite a bit of mud-n'-bloodification on that), and the scar-grid pattern on the forehead. I really wanted to emphasize his scars, but this pattern kind of emerged on its own with successive washes and highlights and I ran with it. Other than that, the face is very WIP. - I need to pick out the teeth and the cheeks need to be lighter. Also need to give the red tattoos more definition. Kinda torn on whether the eyes are too bugged out, or just the right amount of crazed - thoughts?
The grey-ish marine on the left will be a World Eater eventually, I was toying with making him a Son of Horus but I don't want to go too crazy with colors here. Speaking of which, the blue on the WE's shoulderpads and backpack will be toned down significantly to match how dingy the rest of the armor looks. Oh, and the red on his stump is just a placeholder for the usual Tamiya Clear Red mix.
I'm almost done with my classes for this semester so progress should pick up again soon. Then again I tell myself that every summer.

@Johnnyhorse - Pardon my lateness, Darth Bob is correct, they're the Oppressor pattern treads from Blood and Skulls Industry. Size 0 for Land Raiders.
Still chugging along with Angron. With the face out of the way, there's not a whole lot left to do on Angron himself. Basically I need to finish all the silver bits on him, finish his cape (it's just a basecoat and a wash right now), highlight and bloody up the axes, then it's back to work on the three dead marines and the base.

Post by: Darth Bob
Don't know if it's too late to try to do this, but it would be awesome to have viscera and ceremite exploding from the chest of the dead EC where Angron stamped his food down. He looks great though. The face has a lot of definition and is really the focal point of the model. Are you going to have blood splatter on his armor or are you going to limit it to just the axes themselves?

@Darth Bob: Really didn't want to do any additional sculpting on this one. As far as FW models go, especially Primarchs, I generally want them to speak for themselves - any sculpting I could do, goresplosions included, would just get in the way of whatever details are already there.
And we're done here.
I don't think I've ever painted a model loaded with this many miniscule details. I must've gotten a bad batch of Auric Armor Gold, because it was WAY too watery, which made highlighting the gold a nightmare - it just wouldn't stay where I put it half the time no matter how much I shook the bottle. Plus, my Kolinsky sable brushes are all frayed and it's currently impossible to get new ones in the US due to some importing flub, so I was fighting them every step of the way, trying to wrangle them into nice points. Given the fact that I was painting a fething Primarch, the whole experience was kind of nervewracking, but I think I'll remember the experience fondly. I'm definitely looking forward to doing more.
Speaking of which, Lorgar's up next. Should be an easier job in general than Angron, I think the color palette will wind up being much more limited. Most of the model, base included, is going to be grey, with just a bit of metallic detailing here and there. I've got some interesting plans for the face that I don't want to spoil just yet. I do plan on doing a red version of the model at some point in the future, but I just want to have one in Great Crusade colors first.
After Lorgar I think I'll be doing Erebus and Kor Phaeron, then I'll get back to my actual 40k army with a pair of Land Raiders, after which point I'll get started on the armywide revamp I keep yapping about. Planning ahead here.

Hey Raz! Your army looks truely amazing, I made an account just to ask you this haha. How do you sculpt those candles out of greenstuff? I'm wanting to use the same technique for my word bearers! I'm sorry if you may have already answered the question!
Very nicely done.

Post by: RazakelXIII
@Ihadrabies: Sorry I took so bloody long, I posted a candle-sculpting tutorial halfway down this post in my B&C thread. Will link this in the OP here, thought it was already there.
Over two months without any updates. Painting stalled on Lorgar pretty much immediately and I wound up watching lots of anime instead of working on him. Just couldn't decide how I wanted to tackle the "golden tattoos," which would look weird when painted over normal skin, and whether or not I wanted to go with the old fluff where his skin was actually golden. Wound up popping the head off and stripping it a few times before getting to where it is now. Finally went with painting the skin a dark bronze - could indicate that his skin is actually golden or that he just has really dense tattoos - and then scribbling on it with Auric Armor Gold. Anyway, model's still in heavy WIP, face is the only thing I'm calling "done" and even then I think the eyes still need work, and some of the script could use a bit of extra cleaning up. The pics lose quite a lot of the metallic effect on his face, being able to rotate it in your hands and watch light glint off of it is nice. I still hate working with Auric Armor (though the newer pots seem better than the early ones), but I have to admit it usually does what I want it to. Should also say zooming in too far will almost definitely make it look worse than it is, the head is TINY.
I'm pretty happy with how the cape is turning out considering how badly some of my previous cloth-painting adventures have gone. I think it could still use another highlight or two, not sure if I'm going to do any freehand on it. Thoughts?
In other news, I ordered a Knight the other day. I was going to paint Erebus and Kor Phaeron after Lorgar but I don't know how long I can wait to start working on this thing. I have ideas. Muhahaha, etc.

Post by: RazakelXIII
Gah, sorry for taking so long to respond again, ihadrabies. The color on my "parchment" (it's more intended to be human flesh) is layers of the standard Citadel fleshtones (Bugman's Glow, Cadian Fleshtone, Kislev Flesh), with a wash of Baal Red, Leviathan Purple, and Army Painter Strong Tone (or Devlan Mud if you still have some - if you don't have any Baal Red or Leviathan, Army Painter makes red and purple washes now. I haven't tried them yet but I imagine you'll get similar results). I apply them in that order, one at a time, applying each layer while the last one is still wet, which gets it that blotchy effect. Lorgar's parchment is different, that's a basecoat of Rhinox Hide, layer of Baneblade Brown, layer Ushabti Bone, wash Strong Tone/Devlan Mud, highlight Screaming Skull. For script I just scribble with Abaddon Black (except on Lorgar where it's sculpted detail) - my hands are really shaky so sometimes I just kind of let 'em go wild, other times I'll try to paint in a "chipping" motion to get the look of individual characters. Blood is always Tamiya Clear Red mixed with old GW Black Ink. Hope that all helps (and doesn't come too late to do so...)
Lorgar is more or less finished. I highlighted the grey on his armor WAY up and then busted out some Reaper gold to give the trim more contrast. Painted the base and did OSL on the flames, specifically to give me an excuse to throw a little color onto Illuminarum, which was pretty boring to look at before. Pretty happy with the result, could maybe tone down the orange on the base just a little but I'm happy with it right now. I've tweaked the face just a little bit from last time, but still wouldn't advise zooming too close in on it because it WILL look terrible. Quite happy with it from a distance though, moreso IRL than in the pics.
And here he is with his ill-tempered and out-of-focus brother. I'll have to get a better shot of this soon, it'd take me five minutes right now but I can't be arsed.
Either the Knight's up next or a pair of Land Raiders I've had basecoated since forever ago. Probably the latter, I'd really like to get those done since they're the last non-Superheavy tanks I'm planning to do for a while. And I will TRY to update more frequently but I make no promises.

Nice OSL on Lorgar!

I just discovered this thread and I would just like to offer you my silent applause for what has to be the coolest army I have ever seen. Stunning dark paintjobs and conversions, very in line with the artwork and fluff. I am very happy I discovered this.
Keep it up! Can't wait to see those Decimators and HQs (the Sorceror!) painted.

Sorry I'm so late to the party on Lorgar, but wow. I absolutely love what you've done with the colors on that model. In the initial pictures with the golden skin, I was a bit hesitant. I thought that the skin blended in too much with the trim of the armor and was leading to a strange, washed-out look. I know there's fluff precedence for it, but I just wasn't convinced you could do it effectively without well-done NMMs.
But somehow, even though the color of the head hasn't really changed all that much, the skin just looks brilliant with that golden coloration, even given the fact that it is so in-line with the armor trim still. I think the detailing in the armor that you've done, as well as the OSL and other colors you've introduced to the piece have enhanced the positive qualities of the gold on his head, and have brought it out. His head seemingly blended in with his armor before, but now it is distinct and very, very striking. Honestly, Raz, this might be your best painted model to-date.
Brilliant job; best rendition of this model I've seen to this date. Which is very fitting considering how much passion you have for Word Bearers.

It's been FIVE MONTHS since I posted? Ugh. That simply will not do. Have some extremely PIP Land Raiders, Dakka.
Hadn't painted or sculpted much of anything since Lorgar up until a few days ago. I did work on Kor Phaeron but I burnt out on him pretty quickly - trying to get all the little astrological diagrams to show up with my dark red wasn't working out.
Unfortunately I've done no more work on the Sorcerer. I realize some reddish-brownish-blackish Land Raiders aren't exactly the pinnacle of excitement these days, so I think I'll show off some WIPs that I really should've posted like a year ago when I started on them. Wanted to hold onto these until the whole squad was ready for paint, but Darth Bob saw them in person recently and urged me (read: threatened me with secret Alpha Legion torture methods) to post them.
So I've needed a Possessed squad for a while, but I hate the Possessed kit (when used by itself - it's great for bitz). I started on these well before the Gal Vorbak hit, but the idea for them grew out of a conversation I was having at the FLGS. Was talking about how Possessed should look like the daemons they've been possessed by, and suddenly I wondered what it would look like if a Chaos marine was possessed by a Nurgling swarm. Overwhelmed with the desire to see a spess mehren bursting into Nurglings, I hit the bitz box, and this happened:
And then I kept going, this time with a Flamer.
And some Plaguebearers.
And then I started on some Horrors but was too lazy to do any sculpting. They're gonna need a lot, I want lots of mouths and arms and fire everywhere.
I kind of half-heartedly started on a Bloodletter but I'm not tremendously happy with the results. Again, still needs GS work, which could possibly save it.
And I've got a Screamer that's gonna need even more GS work than the Horrors.
That's 7 out of 12 planned Possessed. I want to do another two Bloodletters (and possibly start this one over from scratch), a pair of Daemonettes, and either another Flamer or Screamer, or a Plague Drone (no idea how I'd go about doing that).
I WILL get some Gal Vorbak eventually - the models are too incredible for me not too, but they are a bit expensive for five dudes. Somewhat dismayed at the current lack of Argel Tal, but I'm waiting patiently. It's not like I don't have enough stuff to paint in the meantime.
Anyway, going to try to get these Land Raiders done in a reasonable-ish amount of time, then I'll finally get cracking on the armywide revamp I've been going on about for well over a year now. No, really, I mean it.

A very clever take on the possessed generally. I really like the screamer, actually.

Thanks, inmygravenimage. Quick update on the Land Raiders, iron metallics are about done, except I still need to do chipping and battle damage. Need to sculpt the fleshybits and candles now (gonna be LOTS of the latter on both). Gonna try to do most of that tonight and tomorrow.

Interesting concept on the possessed, should look dramatic when painted all up.

I don't think I've posted in this thread before, but since it popped up again I'll take the chance to say that for quite some time I've thought this army is one of the best out there. Heaps of skill, originality and talent here.
The new Possessed look great, consider me a subscriber from now on!

Awesome! Glad to see you finally posted this brilliant stuff! I shall inform the Legion torturers that we will not need their services.

Thanks, guys. So, fleshybits and candles sculptified. Shoulda done these before I primed them, don't really know why I didn't. I do sculpting late on infantry, but on tanks they don't get in the way as much. Anyway, done now. Still got quite a bit of painting to do before these are finished, will try to post updates every other day or so.
Hopefully getting an Honoured Imperium and an Imperial Sector in the mail tomorrow. I know all the cool kids roll their own terrain, but hey, I really like GW's buildings. Probably going to build them ASAP, planning fairly minimalist paintjobs. Not sure I want to do a lot of converting on those, but I'll see if I can't manage something subtly Chaotic. Or I'll just go overboard. I dunno.

And thus a 6 week terrain project was born? But seriously cool tanks. Really like the additions to the tanks there!

Your Word Bearers are such an inspiration for me when I paint mine, your storm eagle makes me want to paint mine badly, but tthe freehand on yours is so incredible I worry I'd make it look awful. How did you manage it? Specifically the daemon face.

An inspiring thread, one of my favorites.
These word bearers are simply amazing!
It must be a sight to see them in action on a battlefield against an army constructed of similar caliber.

I return once again! Sorry for the long absence, and thanks for the comments.
Sheokronath - I did a painting tutorial over in my B&C thread and linked it at the top of this thread's OP. I laid out how I do my daemon faces here as Step 12 - when I want to do them in gray, I lay it out in Mechanicus Standard Grey first and then do a second layer in Administratum Grey. Hope I'm not too late to be of assistance, I should really lurk my own thread more.
Edreynaline - PFFFFT, more like six months.
Anyway, figure I should throw out an update on the Land Raiders. Still need to do all the script, blood, the spike racks on the Phobos and a bunch of little details on the Avarice (braziers flames/coals, wood, parchment, and I'm not sure if I want the skellington on the Acolyte's book to be gold, silver or bone). Not a huge amount of work left, really, but I can't say when they'll be done.

Well damn. That's just about the best Word Bearers army I ever saw. Most attempts at gore end up looking lame, but this is pretty much perfect. The choice of WoC bodies/legs is also great. They look like they're just marching along slaying whatever crosses their path, an economy of motion that suggests they've done this far too many times.

Your Word Bearers are truly an inspiration for mine! I love them, specially the conversions. I suppose I should work harder with the green stuff.

Simply stunning army you have here, the theme, painting and conversions are all excellent. Am eager to see how the 'Thirster turns out.

Post by: RazakelXIII
Thanks guys. bossfearless, that's exactly what I'm going for. LeCacty, I'm always thinking about ways to expand my cultists, and I'd like to incorporate some mutants, especially using some heavily converted Beastmen models, Crypt Ghouls and Crypt Horrors, but I never seem to get around to it. My priority right now for my cultist mob is actually to just get more Empire Flagellants. And repaint my old ones, because I have 90 not-Flagellants lying around unpainted now.
So, after another long absence, I have more progress on Thirsty.
I need to highlight the metallics, the leather and the black bits (horns, wings, claws, fur). Also need to paint the teeth, fingernails and the tongue. Lot of work but we're gettin' there.
I've also pledged for Bolter and Chainsword's Call of Chaos. I've pledged a Dreadnought, a trio of Nurgle plaguetoads, the Knight I've previously posted in this thread, and these guys:
A Terminator Acolyte for my Anointed Cohort...
And a Sorcerer. Because I don't have a Sorcerer. What have I been DOING with my life?!

So much to comment on!
First off, the Land Raiders look awesome. The little details you've add hive it a lot of character and enhance the army.
Good progress on the Bloodthirster, I remember thinking the concept of the Bloodthirster was totally epic when I was young, and GW have hit the ball out of the park with the new giant beast of a model. Yours is going to look wicked when it's all done.
Excellent conversions, I especially like the Sorcerer, especially as you've used the DA Chappy as the base.

Thanks guys. Little more progress on the Bloodthirster, I've highlighted the bronze. I've also layered up the leather, was admittedly pretty sloppy with it so it's gonna need a little selective washing to put it back in its place. Also probably gonna need another highlight, it's pretty dull at the moment, but at the same time I also don't want it to be too visually interesting - I definitely want the focus on the skin and the bronze.

Wow, your army has come a long way sense I last saw it, looks really good. Keep it up.

Post by: RazakelXIII
Hey, Doonan! Been a while. I couldn't stop working on this army if I wanted to.
So I've got the Bloodthirster more or less where I want him to be before I base him, took a closeup pic that I think shows him off pretty nicely. I'm setting him aside while I work on my Call for B&C, but I think I've got a fairly solid idea of what I want to do with the base.
In addition, I've got that Dread all ready for candles, fleshybits and scribblies. Gonna try and get the sculpting done tomorrow, and if all goes well he should be done by the end of the week.

Great Blood Thirster, you gonna do anything special for the base?
Dread is looking good, sone flames in the 'windows' might work well for the WB theme.
