So many moons ago I saw a Bretonnian/Guard kit bash army in White Dwarf. It was fantastic and well beyond my skills so I never tried it. For some reason I remembered that army a while back and started playing with the conversion. I did a google search and found the army was created by Dave Taylor. I also saw several others have made Genswick armies so I am giving it a shot. I decided to use the entire Cadian arm instead of trimming it and attaching to the Bretonnian. I think it will give me more options giving my limited conversion skills. The friends will be a Blood Angel allies detachment. No special reason, I just ended up with a ton of Blood Angel bits. So with a tip of my cap to Dave Taylor, here is the start......

Oooh, an oldie yet a goodie! I really like the conversion style that you're doing, it looks really simple yet effective. I think that the only thing that I could say critique-wise is that you may want to try out a spot colour, as the colour scheme is really dark. Maybe a small amount of bright silver or gold on detials like Eagles and such.

good start, i like the missile type deal. Will be following around here.

Looking good. Not triming the arms looks fine to me One suggestion with the missile launchers, extended the launcher rail sticking out the front/back it doesnt look quite stable to me, thats the only critique, looking froward to seeing more infantry and the tanks if you plan on doing any

Post by: 40kFSU
@Brotheralexos- Thanks, simple conversions are the best I think. As for the spot color, I'll give it a try. I want the infantry to look very common like the Bretonnian men at arms. The officers will be kitted a little better.
@Rotgut- Thanks, glad you like them.
@panda- Glad to have you on this one panda.
@Young_Logan- Yeah, missile launchers are still very WIP. Right now I'm just trying to build a suitable carriage. I see some really cool, kinda archaic, heavy weapon conversions around here. I want a wheeled gun, but one that looks a little more modern.
I have some time today to paint so I may be able to post some pics. Thanks for all the comments gents.

Post by: Lone Cat
1. This genswick troops requires a considerable knifeworks, i've saw that many 'body' sets had integrated upper right arm.
right?
2. And why you choose gun-carriage Rocketlauncher unit instead of bazooka? if you decide to use gun carriage system on Rocketlaunching unit. then it should also have multiple launch rails instead
3. Do you plan to use HB too?
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
@Lone Cat- Yeah, considerable knife work. You have to trim the arms and shoulders off the Bretonnians then dry fit the Cadian arms. No trimming on those luckily. I haven't decided about the missle launcher yet. I was just trying something new. The carriage is pretty close to the way I want the other heavy weapons. I plan to use the heavy bolter with a little modification to make it an autocannon.
And with that, the platoon command squad is finished. I haven't decided exactly how I am going to build this army yet, platoons or vets or what. No flyers though, don't think they fit.

44654
Post by: Lone Cat
Of course! they're too antique to fly. they'd better have Landship heavy supports instead. Do you think that Leman Russ is too small for them? meow.
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
Well, we will see. I plan several Leman Russ tanks. Interestingly, the bodies are WFB which look slightly smaller than IG. This, in turn, makes the BA allies look larger. So they may appear more to scale with GW fluff.

I just ordered a box of man at arms and an imperial battleforce cause I had the exact same idear. I only had one problem about wich wheels to use for the heavy weapon teams, so wich do you use?
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
I use SM bike wheels. But I'm not sure it's all that good. When I finish those weapons I'll post some better pics for you to check out. Also if you google genswick rifles you will get a bunch of pictures and ideas.

You wouldn't be planning on making a guide, would you? I am thinking of adding some sappers to my IG army and I love these guy's designs.
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
@Happygrunt- Well, not enough to it for a guide but I just got a new box of Men at Arms and will post some WIP pictures. Its really nothing more than sawing off a few shoulders. These do have the perfect sapper look.
@Panda- Here you go, and I cant believe you got 2 more squiggoths!
This is the first allied BA assault squad and the rest of the Genswick platoon. Pics are really bad, I was in a hurry. The bald dude is my Harker. I used SM scout arms and plan to do the same for the vets. Im also going to do his eyes when I get a trustworthy brush, maybe Santa will help me out with that......

I sort of agree with this. Head doesn't bother me but the arms look weird. If you cut the heavy bolter off behind the hands, you can put it on catachan arms and gs the gap pretty easily. I think they'll fit closer to his body and make the bolter look heavier.

Post by: howie
Looks good, Harker looks pretty bad ass. I remember doing the same thing with the Bret peasant models, but I didn't manage to pull it off. Well done, by the end of it I'm sure you'll have a very memorable army!

@Hmelrose, howie, pretre- Thanks for the comments guys I really appreciate them and am glad you like what you see.
However,
@Brotheralexos and Almarine- You guys have fair points. I was hoping he would look bigger than he does. The arms, while a little out of scale, does give me the muscle thing I want. The head does look chubby. I had hoped the big arms and bald head would give him a meat head vibe. Seems he looks chubby. Ill look at swithcing heads. A helmet may also add size, at least the appearance of it. Thanks gents.
Merry Christmas Dakka!

Quick update. An example of sawing off the shoulders. All that remains is sticking on the arms. Speaking of arms, here is the first veteran with the SM scout shotgun. Arms are a little off but not so much it doesnt work, at least thats what I think. Any Dakka opinions would be welcome.

@panda and Brotheralexos- Thanks guys I'm glad you like what is going on. I have made some decent progress this week though nothing posted yet. Harker got a new head and his squad is built except for one guy. I could have sworn I had enough shotguns. Oh well. Also got the red on 5 Blood Angels.
More importantly, I'm sure everyone is just as excited and happy as I over the Orange Bowl win! Go Noles!!

34514
Post by: 40kFSU
@panda- Well, thats why he is called a Catachan Devil!
@rustbucket- Thank you and glad you dropped in to take a look.
Now, Harkers squad is mostly done. I have a different idea now for the shotgun guys so I will probably make up some lasgunners to fill it out. I chose a missile launcher and grenade launcher reasoning they are essentially the same weapon and compliment one another. Given these guys can kind of ambush the enemy I figure you can hit anything with these weapons.
The CCS Vox guy is finally done.
This is the first Lascannon. I am kinda excited about it, think I did a pretty good job. Still have some wire to sort out, but I need a base for that. All the heavy weapons will look different.

I like your Harker a lot, but I'm not a fan of the scout shotgun arms on your bodies - they do look far too big for what is actually a light weapon. Have you considered modifying a lasgun into a shotgun - I've seen some bolter - lasgun conversions which look really good and use cadian arms.

@cosmic pixie- yeah I think you are right about the shotguns. The more I look at them the less I like them. Besides, looking at the rules, they may suck. Thanks for stopping by!
@Lone Cat- Exactly. Bazooka too cool not to use.
@panda- Thanks, by the way I am very sad you opted for more giant squibs rather than conversion packs. I'll probably get over it at some point though.
@Brotheralexos- Thanks man, I may use Bretonnian or Empire characters to round out the squad. We shall see.

@swampyturtle- Thanks, glad you like them.
@rustbucket- Thanks to you too, sir. I think I need to do a better job on the weathering. Probably should have tried the colors on something else besides a Forgeworld tank first. Oh well.
As for some progress, I finished up Harkers squad and 2 gunners for the 2 Lascannons. One more of those guns to build then Ill finish the crews and get them mounted. I also finished up the CC squad. Went with a standard, just think it fits the army. That dude holding the paper is my master of ordinance, big guy will join the CC squad as the RTO. This is a very bits intensive project, really slow going. Anyway my modest progress shots....

So the Company Command Squad is all finished. The standard has slate weathering powder on it to simulate the burns on the flag. Its hard to tell with my sorry pics. One would think that after all the PM blogs I have done I would have figured out a better way to take pictures. Oh well. Also have the Basilisk put together. I am especially pleased on this since it was a bits construct. That muzzle looking thing on the barrel is the Hell Hammer cannon from the Baneblade kit. I think it looks pretty cool.

You decided to skip the mantlet cover when magnetizing your russ? I figured out a pretty simple way to magnetize it to all 3 of the gun mantlets. Just added a small magnet to the top of each barrel where the cover will sit, then glued a small peice of a couple of staples (2 of them still stuck together, cut into a small square section) to the underside of the arch of the cover.
Pic for reference (to show where the small magnets were placed):

As a former Bret player, I very much enjoyed seeing the Men-At-Arms turned around into Imperial Guard. And if you're going to have an army that uses its infantry as 'human bullets', what better fit than those guys yeah?
I never saw the White Dwarf in question that inspired you to create them, but I'll add a sub in the hopes of seeing them fully arrayed for battle some day

@panda- Thanks, I'm really happy with it. I think the muzzle makes it look mean.
@Nowlan- yeah, you are way better using magnets than I. Be honest with you, I forgot to use the mantlet. I have these big, oversized magnets I got a couple years ago. I should get the smaller ones like you use. I'll give it a shot on the next Russ.
@xeno99- glad you like them. Definitely check out Dave Taylor's stuff. He has great conversions and painting. He did an Adeptus Custodes army that is really cool. If you google image search Genswick Rifles you can find examples of other people's workin them.
@swampyturtle- thanks for posting the link, I checked it out myself.
@eldartau- Thanks man. I figured there needed to be some more color on the tanks. Besides I think the dozer blades matches up with the look of the army.

Nice work! You've pulled off some great conversions with these guys. I like the bright blue banner, too; I imagine it really pops against the metal and earth tones of the uniforms. Can we see a shot of the army so far?

Post by: 40kFSU
@AzraelHunt- Thank you sir. I will post an army shot as soon as I finish this batch of guys.
Ive started the Basilisk, which I am liking more and more. I may try to build another for 2 Basilisks and 2 Russ', instead of 1 and 3 respectively. The guys will be the Basilisk crew, 2 guys for the Lascannon teams, and a sniper. He will "count as" a Ratling. I really like the unit, but the models give me the creeps. Blah. That should round out everything. Next up will be a squad of melta-vets and Rough Riders.

Post by: 40kFSU
Ok, got 3 of the kit bash Stormtroopers finished up. They are pretty simple, Cadians with a head swap, trimmed Vox casters, trimmed lasguns, and some guitar wire. Also the last Lascannon. Im going to leave them be for a while and complete another veteran squad. Cant have a Genswick army without more Genswick guys.

Thanks Panda. I am hoping these guys look elite and not just like jazzed up Cadians. I guess time and paint will tell.
So I decided Harkers squad and the grenade launchers just didnt do it for me so I rearmed the special weapon vets with plasma guns. Much better. Also, finally, finished the last Lascannon. I am pretty happy with this conversion, may use it for the rest of the teams. Also working on another vet squad, this time meltas.

@Cain- Thanks for the compliment sir, but original, I am afraid not. These are a blatant rip off of Dave Taylor's Genswick Rifles. I worked the arms differently, but the idea is still his.
So I have some progress, half of the next melta vet squad is finished. As are 3 stormtroopers. Those guys turned out pretty well, but my phone wont let me get closer pics. Really need to figure that out.

@PDH- Glad you like it and thanks for taking the time to look through everything.
@eldartau- Me too, I love the Sentinel. Its just freakin cool.
So, I finished the 2nd vet squad, meltas for these boys. I plan one more then its chimeras for all.
The flagellants will be my Psyker Battle Squad. I was going to use Catachan bits on these guys but changed my mind when I saw all the pieces in the kit. I decided to only trim the weapons from the arms. I am hoping the poses and overall look of them will produce an appearance of charging towards the enemy filled with warp energy, trying to get it out before their heads blow up.
I did something else which is unusual for me, I read the rules. I think instead of 2 platoons I'll just make a single giant one. Since they can combine squads it sort of serves the same purpose as 2 small. I guess for deployment purposes 2 would be more flexible, but what the hell.

34514
Post by: 40kFSU
Alright, first 5 Psykers finished. The look Im going for is a squad, which was once in uniform, to be charging forward in whats left of those clothes. You know, like the warp energy tears apart the uniform as it flows from the Psykers. Im playing with the idea of using washes to make the eyes and mouth glow. We shall see.

@Rawson- thanks for dropping by and I'm glad you like it. I have enjoyed your Vostroyans on many occasions. Conversions are brilliant. I'm also glad for the lack of painted faces in the army. What a beating to get that right.
@inmygravenimmage- thanks man. You can really use that Cadian command set to all sorts of stuff. I see this guy reading a roster of who is left in the squad and who is the weakest. That way he will know who to shoot first. Only if necessary of course.

Thanks guys. The heads, well, I dont know where they came from. I thought they were from the Valkyrie, but I just bought one and no heads. It must be from something fairly common in IG because I have had a ton of them. Anyway, 5 more nuts for the PBS and a shot with the group together. Also knocked out a shot of the army so far. I am well past the half way point. Im thinking 2 more infantry squads, a heavy weapon squad with autocannons, maybe a couple of special weapon squads. We will see on that. As for armor, 1 more Russ, a Manticore, the Valkyrie, and 3 Chimeras for the vets. I have everything except the Chimeras bought, shouldnt be long.

@grrrfranky- Thanks man. It's funny I can't stand Empire Flagelants, the seem ridiculous. But those guys make sweet 40k psyckers.
@BigJim- Glad you like those guys. I lucked out with Harker, wasn't sure the SM scout Hvy Bolter would work.
@eldartau- your comments are always welcome, thank you sir.
@xeno99- Thanks and you are in luck, half way finished with the 3rd veteran squad and building the autocannon team now.

Where are you getting the wheels to do this? It is very interesting.

While we're on the subject of heavy weapons, how did you make the gun carriages for the lascannon hwt earlier in the thread? I prefer those to the autocannon ones above.
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
The wheels are from the space marine bikes. Only one I could find that really worked. The carriages themselves are built from pieces of sprue. I just make a "T" attach the wheels, green stuff helps, then slap on a few bits. The AC does look like it needs something. Maybe I'll grab a few of the shields that are supposed to be on the gun

Sweet looking army. If wasn't already building an Orkarized IG army would have to really think about following your lead and build an Bret IG army. Great job.

Post by: cormadepanda
i think if you put blast sheilds on the cannon the effect would be sold. I do love the look they have well done. On a further note, you only need to read about the first 60~ pages to know the rules of warhammer. The rest is fluff, play styles, models, and other stuff...
BUCKET....
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
@thesilverback- Thanks. An Orkarized IG army you say? Wouldnt mind checking that out.\
@panda-I have decided against the shields. The guns look light, like they could be easily moved or traversed to engage new targets. Since AC's go after infantry and light vehicles, I think it is appropriate. The shield would reduce how far the weapon could track left to right. Besides I like the way they look painted.

So, took some time to rest my brain and knocked out the Manticore. STill need to knock out the missles and dozer blade, that is for the next break. I also bit the bullet and based the whole army with green grass. I experimented with dead grass and some other odd, grayish color. Both looked cool and suitably grimdark but the green breaks up all the drab colors and helps the model stand out more. Im please. For now at least.

@grrrfranky and Panda- Thanks gents, that was kinda the look I was going for. I mean, somewhere in the galaxy there has to be green grass, right?
@AussieRinzler- Thanks man, the oldies are always the best. The cork is just a thin sheet I got at Target. It was in the office supply section. I just kinda break up the edges until it looks right.

The giant birds from the Gaunts Ghosts novel feel like they'd fit in with this army perfectly.

Thanks monkeytroll, I am kinda suprised at how many people like the bases.
And BigJim, I am considering a squad of rough riders. They really fit with the army.
And I finished up the commander. I gave him 2 pistols so he can be a reasonable stand in for Creed. Even added a little doggie named Kell.........
I decided to bronze the helmets and shoulder pads of the command squad, just to make them stand out. Turned out really well I think.....

When I do stuff like that I usually regret it and the models end up in a tub of simple green. Speaking of which, I have a FW Hydra soaking right now. god damn do genwick guardsmen look good, tip my hat off to the guy who started making them
ur painting also really suits the theme, all shiny armour and chivalry and whatnot, i like it
them karksins ... sorry but i dont like them, maybe try to make them more genswick like. but men at arms in half and glue knights on them and give-em hellguns?
those flagellants, what are you gonna use them for cuz i suggest pysker squad cuz i love it when people do that, crazed psyker is a cool psyker
penal legions? because if so cuz i think peasant bowmen look goodas penals, cheap too
also that sentinel, doesnt follow the theme either, maybe give line it up with shields and parchment here and there
having some knight rough riders look be lol
oh and friendly advice, read my signature
keep up the good work, subbed

@Novelist47- Lots to say here. Ok, the flagellants are psykers, the rough riders may happen, I haven't decided. The storm troopers were a whim, I kinda like them, but I do see where you are coming from. Thanks for all your comments, Im glad you like the overall army.

@panda- That Russ is even worse than I thought. It may be a total loss. Still plan to enter your competition. Just trying to figure something out worth doing.
On to the Rifles. The 2nd Russ is coming along nicely, should be done in a day or two. A little more than half way done with the 3rd veteran squad. Nothing too special there, just melta vets. The gunners for the AC squad will be up next. Im really looking forward to finishing that squad. Those guys on the right are the stormtroopers. I decided the cadians were out of place so I broke it all down and rebuilt them as Genswick guys.

simply fascinated by the bucket helmet storm troopers. Well done. Baneblade could get bigger side skirts and front armor to
genswick-ise it.

I like the idea of just the tank commander to denote Genswickism, it makes sense.
I recommend something more on the side of the Russ though, maybe some panels or trim the same color as the infantry's shoulder pads?

very nice again! and the lascannon sponsons are a nice touch. Most players also pay for the heavy bolter upgrades, are you going to add them or leave as is? Both are fine. Excited to see some paint.

Post by: 40kFSU
@panda- Nah, not heavy bolters. I already glued the doors shut. Oh well, there is always the next army.
Just for kicks I decided to take a group shot of the infantry platoon. I've mentioned several times I have never played, but I read all the battle report and tactics threads. I read a lot about blob infantry platoons being "blobbed" and sitting on an objective. I have armed these guys up quite a bit. I think they can handle all comers. Your army is very nice and very well executed.
Just as a suggestion if you later choose to add some Chimeras, I did a conversion that would probably suit your army's aesthetic quite well.
It's the Chimera tank tracks combined with the central part of Ironclad's Steam Tank 5 ( http://www.ironcladminiatures.co.uk/shop/article_steam05/Steam-5.html?sessid=v7PYnWu4GOqcCBpSDJofwcA7t7t0sXxmG16TKYpCZg59ymNldKwxgvIFYkcsIRRt&shop_param=cid%3D10%26aid%3Dsteam05%26).

@panda- Thanks man, Ill post a shot of the whole thing pretty soon. Does look pretty cool!
@Maxim C. Gatling- Yeah, I probably bought enough Cadian bits to build a Cadian army. I was lucky how everything seemed to match up to the Brets and fit.
@Ketara- Thank you, I appreciate that. I was considering Chimeras but, honestly, have about reached the end of this project. I checked out that store, pretty cool stuff. Maybe for the future. My next IG army will feature Victoria Miniatures, maybe these too. And I noticed the Preatorians in your pic. They are my all time favorite, well done.
@Dinamarth- Glad to see you are still here!
As for the rest, Lord Commissar is done. Stupid lighting stinks. And the last of the vets, flamer squad. I built a Astropath/Fleet guy and a Master of Ordinance. Also finished the sniper squad.

Thanks panda, I may turn one of the psykers from the battle squad into an astropath. Seems I didnt read my codex very carefully, I have one too many.
As for more WIP, the Baneblade is coming along and the last Vet squad is started. I gave these guys a heavy flamer and 2 flamers. Im thinking the army has 9 plasma guns, 3 plasma pistols, and 6 meltaguns. Thats just the infantry, not including vehicle weapons and the HWS's. So what good would 3 more plasma or melta guns do? I figure this squad would be good to repel at least part of a hordes army, especially when supported by the Hellhound.

Haven't cracked the code yet for washing vehicles. I keep getting pools of wash and it looks wrong. Have t bought anything just yet. Have to sell these guys first. Wife's orders.

40kFSU wrote:@Lone Cat- Yeah, considerable knife work.
Did you mix paint at all on these, or is that just an effect from a wash?
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
@inmygravenimage- Agreed. I was hoping to keep thing consistent by putting black on all the weapons, this was a little much. Cant really see any details.
@lord marcus- No, I dont mix my paints. Have tried in the past and the results are too horrible to think about. I give generous washes to the clothing and weapons.
So, on to some completed models. The Master of Ordinance. Your plain, run of the mill Cadian. The Vendetta turned out fairly nice. This is the first time I didnt paint the cockpit interior. Ive seen a lot of people paint the glass with great effect. I used a light blue, kinda washed out in the pics though. The lascannons are a pair of Predator side sponsons. I used ash weathering powder on the wings and fins to give the effect of the aircraft flying low, through smoke.

Have you tried painting a glossy/shine effect on the canopy? I enjoy its basing a lot, and do enjoy the master of ordinance. I do feel like the vendetta is slightly bland, which is bold! and good, but a stripe or something might help it along the way.
34514
Post by: 40kFSU
Good call on the stripe there panda. It did need something to break up the cream. Also darkened the canopy, it looks better this way. And here are the last units all finished up. I screwed up the Baneblade crew member so I just planted a flag identical to the one in the CCS on the turret. The dude with the guns is Marbo. I figured why not. Dude in red is an Astropath. Obviously a former member of the PBS. Since I had one extra I just repainted. For the scheme I reached into my paint case and whatever color I pulled out is what I used. And the 4th Veteran squad. These boys have 2 flamers and a heavy flamer. Ill post a picture of the full army here in a bit.

I almost gave up on this guy. Had to tear off all the tracks, the backwards and upside down demolisher cannon, and the armor plates on the turret sides. They were also upside down. Fortunately I have a very deep bits box and I came up with enough parts to rebuild him. He has options for a regular LRBT or the extension to make him a Vanquisher.
