GMM's 2012 Year In Review (Tons of Finished Armies!) @ 2013/01/08 04:37:25

Post by: GMMStudios

Hey all,

It's that time of year again. I have been painting full time officially for five years last April, so this will be my 5th one of these reviews in some form or another. Although I am the one painting all these models, even I am surprised when the main army images are all laid out, both in the quantity and varying styles that have rolled through my hands.

So sit back and enjoy. Nothing to read or think too hard about here, just a lot of pictures! As usual for even more images, check the website or blog.

Until next year!

Well thanks!

And its just me. A lot of people assume I am a couple or more people, but I am too particular with how I do things, I'd end up wringing someone's neck.

Jaw dropping excellence at the sheer number of things painted!

Really like those White/Purple Inquisition. Know where I can find more pics of those? i especially love those non gw models I spot (one of which I can remember being a warmachine mage hunter assassin)

Well, that's about 10000% more than I've ever done, and it's painted about 500% better to boot

You have some great painting skills!

I'm floored by this. Are these all the armies you have done over the last 5 years? I'd be lucky to have done one of the smaller forces pictured in a year or so. Let alone all these in only 5 times that.

Utterly stunning work. Bravo, exalted.

ALL IN ONE YEAR?

Wow.

Actually you know what, its makes sense now. I remember commenting on the purple and silver Grey Knights. And i followed the 5 Titan blog with great interest. I also remeber seeing the Chaotic Blood Angels. Seriously though all these armies in one year is an impressive feat. Especially to such a high standard.

I think I have been stalking the photos of that blood angel army at least once a month since you first posted it, and I'm still finding new stuff in it that impresses me, and then you go and post this lot! How the hell am I supposed to find the to slobber over all of those!

Any chance you could share some wisdom on how you got the colour on chitin on the green and grey Nids?

The amount of quality work you manage to pull out is obscene... It would take most people a year just to put out of the boxes the models you managed to paint beautifully. Wish you health and more great results for 2013

The sheer volume of productivity and completion that comes from your studio in a single year is more than 20-30....maybe even 50 other players will accomplish in a lifetime! Just incredible, I dont know where you find the time to do this, but im assuming you have painted so many armies by now it must be like clockwork for you. the colors, the effects you use....all of it is spot on. Your thousand sons army still remains the best, most creative/personalized army ive seen this yr. That army in just phoenomenal! I look foward to your productions in the 2013 year; your work is a big influence and inspiration for people on this site to continue painting and persevere through their own miniature projects.

This.

I have done it so much now there is none of that frustration, mulling about, anxiety, just 100% enjoyment,

I suppose it's like working on a car, or anything like that. It is pretty knuckle-destroying sort of frustrating for a new person, but for someone who does it all the time as a professional there are no surprises, can just enjoy it.

Just incredible body of work. I particularly liked the nurgle guard you posted recently, but with that first 15000pt blood angel army which i first seen around september, you probably single handedly inspired me to build an army again and get back playing 40k for the first time since 2nd edition. I've pinched a few of your ideas, I hope you don't mind too much. A real inspiration, so thanks. Looking forward to a productive 2013... for both of us.

Your stuff is consistently brilliant, it's quite depressing how someone like yourself is painting dozens of basic troop models that are far better painted than my painstakingly painted character models, lol!

I've seen most of these on here before but must have missed the Thousand Sons. I absolutely love the sand effect on the vehicles, consider it copied! (Probably badly.)

Absolutely stunning. I'm just wondering, if you painted all these within 365 days ( a year ) doesn't that make like an average of atleast 2-3 miniatures per day the whole year even if you painted every day? Depending how many miniatures there are ofcourse with all those armies, but there's like tanks and everything. Routine must be pretty solid.

That's just insane! I spend 4-10 hours per fig, while with that many figs you probably spend like 4-10 working days per army! I've about 15k points worth o' stuff to assemble and paint, and I'll be lucky if I'm finished by the year 40 000. But it's good to see someone can do such feats in a short order of time, and to such level of quality as well.

Clean edge highlighing. check.
Good colour composition. check.
Subtle touches that make each army unique while still sticking to appropriate "fluff". check.
Awesome website which holds even more pictures. check.

I think my most loved pic has got to the your Thousand Sons army. The dusty sand covered concept gives the army a great depth and character. I also love the Valk Copter conversion. So simple, and yet it works so well. Congratulations on a great year - here's to this year being even better!

Thanks!

Yes I take a month or so and do my Adepticon army every year, and I do piddle around on my own stuff during the rest of year. But really my itch to create is scratched by commissions so I just don't often feel the need unless there is an army I really want to play. I currently have at least a dozen armies as well, so I have plenty to play with.

And no I never get sick of it, in fact if I go more than a couple days without painting I get mild withdrawals!

Yep. I can scarcely comprehend producing that quality or that quantity, let alone both. Even the presentation is mind-blowing, both in terms of photography and the background terrain (even discounting the dedicated display boards). It must take ages to set up for a photo session.

Your work is disgustingly pretty. I don't even know where to start. The Alligator people look amazing, the subtle grey carapaces on the Tyranids looks oddly appealing, and the dust-covered Thousand Sons vehicles look fantastic. I didn't managed to take everything in all on one go, but overall you are a massive inspiration, and I'm intending to crank out my Ork army pretty quickly, You've proved it can be done without sacrificing quality.

If so you must never actually work because that is too badass to be "work" lol. BTW I love the sandy Thousand sons and that display board with the hatchet and the wood. Absolutely brilliant, not sure anything in my stack of 25 years of White Dwarf matches, well, any of your armies. Beyond superb somewhere.

Not as many as you think. When you have painted as much as I have, most of the time saved is just not having to think about it. As I posted before it is like being a mechanic. A shade tree mechanic is going to spend 2 hours on 1 rusted bolt and be cursing and swearing, whereas a full time mechanic that enjoys it has done so many cars he can do the whole job in the same amount of time and half asleep.

Any idea how many points you painted up in 2012?

I would be surprised if it were under 100,000 points. I never really thought about it, so I ran down the images and did a rough count. Smaller armies I estimated conservatively at 2000, anything Privateer as 1000, and with the Titans and recent two armies it should easily top 100,000+ if you put it all in army builder.

Great question, it made me think, as I never really thought to take a guess at it. Thanks

The accolades for all of your work have already been richly and justly provided by others. I would just like to say that out of all of this amazing work, the guy with the coconut halves from the "Munchy Gutsmen" really is delightful

So is this just a side job for you? How much time per day to you think you spend painting?

You've got some amazing paintjobs here, and nothing subpar to speak of. Every army is unique and beautiful, and that's a staggering amount of output for one year. I do have to say though, one particular army caught my eye:

The army is too small for me to really see, and I'm not really into the world of square bases and ranked formations, but the presentation on this army is excellent. I don't know if you were responsible for it, but that display board is fantastic.

I guess this is your job, but still dude, that is some prolific high grade painting right there.

My army has had 3 codexes and I STILL have more unpainted than painted models.

Top stuff, and here's looking to 2013!

Words can't describe the quality of all these armies. If i could paint one model to the quality of all of yours i'd be a happy man! Well done, hope to see some more examples of your work.

I cannot express in words how inspirational and incredible this is. You achieve more in a year than most hobbyists do in their lives. Fantastic.

I'd definitely commission you (if I had money XD)

Holy crap! I never manage to paint a hundredth of the first pic in a year! To produce that much at that quality is truly amazing work.

Out of it all, I have to say this piece is my favorite purely because of the mood it portrays because of the display. Wonderful.

I am in awe to your painting prowess and dedication. Simply, I find it hard to paint up a single squad in a year. I could never imagine painting that much in a year.

Please, take some exhaled 1+ internet credibility, to boost your internet ego and hopefully the number of armies you are able to churn out this year.

Good Afternoon,

I have to know, the armies listed are they ones that you painted for other people as commisions or are they your personal armies?

Thanks

I'm absolutely blown away by this thread, the scale and quality is unlike almost anything else I've ever seen let alone the amazing variety of styles and models...

That said, what really makes it stand out is the photography, so nice to see stunning painting married to some top notch photos, no blurry phone pics anywhere to be seen, bliss! ;D

That really is incredible what you've done. Both the quality AND quantity! I think you deserve some kind of medal.

How do you stay motivated? Is it just a case of *really* liking painting, or is there some secret you can share?

You are inspiring, dedicated, gifted, hardworking simply amazing, i must say the layout with the axe was very nice, the black metal hangars and buckles was a brilliant touch, and you used the blood drips very particular and it showed, very nice touch, you have a wonderful eye for detail, i particularly like the sand bags you did on top of some of the imperial tanks. I also think the ogryn with the burlap sacs over their heads look with the gas hoses is just amazing, so creative.

Well thanks!

And yes, I just really love to paint. I get withdrawals if I don't do something with modelling and painting every day.
